On breezy trips to far-flung cities and hard-hitting hiking trails alike, it’s crucial to load up with the proper dog travel accessories to keep man’s best friend happy. Whether your idea of a good time is lounging in the sun at a hip Airbnb or taking your pupper camping , dogs get cold, need water, and have first aid emergencies just like the rest of us.

We asked a handful of travel pros what they never leave home without when satisfying their wanderlust alongside a furry pal. Here’s what they recommend keeping in a backpack or carry-on to make traveling with a dog easier and safer.

A multi-purpose leash

A harness that offers ultimate control on walks, a car safety harness, a pack for pups, a doggy backpack for human hikers, a travel food carrier, a collapsible travel bowl, a doggie first aid kit, a balm for sore paws, a low-profile travel bed, a packable winter coat, a cozy fleece pullover.

Sometimes, you don’t even know that you have a problem until a brilliant piece of gear comes along and solves it in one fell swoop. The Magic Link is that piece of gear. “It’s my favorite leash for travel, since it can be worn in various ways and allows for hands-free walking,” says Nöel Russell, co-founder and CXO at Whimstay . This no-hands approach—pet owners can wear it around their wrist or waist—is ideal when carrying luggage or trying to use a smartphone while out and about, explains Russell.

“The Easy Walk harness has been a godsend for hiking,” says Jake Case, editor at Territory Supply . “The front-anchor point gives me more leverage when my dog pulls, making it less obnoxious and easier to control.” Subtle features like this are key when romping around a new city with your furry companion–distractions are high, smells are captivating, plus there are loads of new people. Keeping your dog in check with a sturdy harness will help make both urban and trail adventures more fun and less of a headache.

Traveling at highway speeds on weekend getaways to Joshua Tree and Jackson Hole might feel like a breeze for humans in ergonomic seat belts, but Fido’s often left to fend for himself in the backseat without much recourse in case an accident happens. Kurgo’s Tru-Fit dog car harness slips on and fastens easily, clipping into any ordinary car seat belt. Plus, it’s crash-tested for dogs up to 75 pounds so that even your favorite chonk can stay safe on the road.

Whether it be in the rust-tinted sandstone of Zion or the rolling green hills of the Great Smoky Mountains, if you’re planning to tackle some trails with your pup, it’s a good idea to get them a doggy backpack so they can help schlep any necessary pet gear, like treats and travel bowls. The Baxter dog backpack by Kurgo is a machine-washable rucksack with two saddlebags and eight adjustment points to give a near-custom fit when your pup’s out in the wilderness. Pet owners can choose between “Baxter” and “Big Baxter” sizes to accommodate dogs from 30 to 110 pounds. Heading on a multi-night adventure? Check out the larger Ruffwear Palisades dog backpack , which Kelly Sosa, founder of The Service Dog Connection , says is “ideal for packing in extra dog food, water, and supplies.”

Travel journalist and Traveler contributor Stephanie Vermillion loves toting around her nine-year-old Bichon mix in a K9 Sport Sack when she wants to put in the big miles. “As he gets older, he's not able to go as long as he used to,” she says. “The Sport Sack makes sure he can still be part of the fun, no matter his age.” The brand makes a variety of colorful backpacks for on-the-go humans to bring their dog along in, with features like side ventilation, internal frames, and hip belts for extra support.

Image may contain: Bag, and Cup

On both long-haul road trips to fanciful getaways and quick drives to visit family for the holidays, it’s key to carry and store your dog’s kibble in a safe container. Wilderdog makes it simple to skip the wasteful (and easy-to-rip) plastic bags with their waterproof doggie bag. These whimsical, boho roll-top sacks store up to five pounds of food and come with an adorable, 1.25-cup steel mug to measure out meals.

Image may contain: Accessories, Handbag, Bag, and Headband

The Ruffwear trail runner bowl is an ideal companion for sunshine-spattered hikes and warm, poolside vacations alike. Since dogs stay cool by panting, which can dehydrate them over time, it’s imperative to have a portable way to give them water on the go, and this durable nylon bowl packs up small enough to fit in your pocket. “Keeping water bowls on hand and easily accessible is key to keeping my dogs comfy while we’re out adventuring,” Russell says.

None of us want to think about worst-case scenarios when we’re trying to escape our city woes, but savvy dog owners know how important it is to travel with a pet-centric first aid kit and the name of the nearest vet on hand. The Trail Dog medical kit is designed to be a lightweight, easy-to-stow wellspring of dressings and bandages to soothe injured paws. It even comes with a sterile pair of tweezers to help remove ticks and splinters.

Image may contain: Bottle, Face, Head, Person, and Tape

Let’s face it—dogs’ paws are wont to get rough and cracked, especially if you traipse around on rough pavement, salted roads, or snowy areas. Musher’s Secret is a time-tested remedy of Canadian sled dog drivers, made to act like an invisible boot and protect pups’ feet. This fast-drying, hypoallergenic concoction is composed of food-grade ingredients like beeswax and vegetable oils so that even if your furry mate tries to lick it off, it’s safe.

Image may contain: Cushion, Home Decor, Pillow, Accessories, Handbag, and Bag

At outdoor restaurants and backcountry camps alike, it’s nice to give your pup a dedicated space to lay down that’s insulated from the cold, hard ground. The Highlands dog pad by Ruffwear is a lightweight solution that helps you do just that. City kids can use the pad to help their dog settle quickly, no matter the noise level, while campers will appreciate the extra protection between their dog’s nails and the delicate fabric of their tent. Rachel Popp, co-founder of Big Fish Collective , recommends pet owners pair it with a Kelty Bestie blanket for a complete sleep system that’s “cuddle-worthy for you and your pup, too.”

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, and Underwear

If you’re the type of traveler that likes to breeze through the airport with only a carry-on or an outdoor adventurer with a few winter hikes on the brain, Ruffwear’s Quinzee jacket is an ultra-packable, uber-warm solution that’ll keep your furry friend toasty without hogging all your luggage space. Made with high-loft polyester insulation that’s designed to mimic the packability of down, this weather-resistant coat features easy-release side buckles to ensure the perfect fit.

Image may contain: Clothing, and Apparel

Sometimes it’s cold but not too cold, and you might find yourself looking for a stylish pullover to keep your doggo comfy when the sun starts to set. Wilderdog’s funky, southwest-inspired fleece jacket comes in fun colors like olive and berry, is made of quick-drying midweight fabric, and features a neoprene neck gaiter for extra warmth. Add in the brand’s lifetime guarantee, and it’s a no-brainer when winter rolls around.

The Spruce Pets / Kristin Kempa

Traveling with your dog or cat can get overwhelming for both of you. On top of many pets having travel anxiety or getting motion sickness, they also get bored, have to use the bathroom, and get hungry and thirsty on the road. Whether you're traveling by car, plane, boat, or train (or even just going for a hike), you'll want to stock up on the top pet travel accessories to make you and your furry friend's experience a heck of a lot more enjoyable.

To get expert recommendations and tips for traveling with a pet, we spoke with Dr. Gina Rendon, medical director at Williamsburg Vet Clinic in Brooklyn, New York, and Dr. Catriona Love, medical director at Mercer Street Veterinary Hospital in Seattle, Washington. They shared important safety and logistical tips for traveling with your pet.

We also took recommendations from Travel + Leisure editors, did extensive research, and reviewed 131 products across seven different tests including ones for dog car seats, cat carriers, GPS collars, and more. Before you take your next trip with your pet, check out these travel accessories that will make vacations with the whole family run smoothly.

Best Airline-approved Dog Backpack Carrier

Mr. peanut's aspen series airline approved backpack pet carrier.

  • Performance 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5
  • Comfort 4.5 /5

Your pet will get great ventilation and views with mesh windows on all four sides.

The narrow width/height may not provide enough space for some dogs.

If you need an airline-approved pet carrier , this petite backpack-style dog carrier makes traveling hands-free with your dog a breeze. The thoughtful details stood out during testing, including several built-in pockets for storing treats, your phone, or waste bags. We also found the side water bottle pocket and laptop sleeve convenient. The interior is fleece-lined for your dog’s comfort, and there is a leash tether for security. Mesh on all four sides gives your pup a breathable space with all-sides peekability — two factors that can help comfort anxious travelers. This backpack is slim enough to fit under even the narrowest of under-seat space on a plane, but with only seven inches of interior floor width (as stated by the manufacturer, it’s made for smaller dogs). The padded backpack straps are easily adjustable, and you can also belt in the backpack with the handy seat belt attachment.

Best Dog Car Seat

Away the pet carrier.

The Spruce Pets / Sarah Naftzger

  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5

It looks as good as it performs — and it has pet safety certification.

Minimal mesh paneling may be claustrophobic for some pets.

The Away Pet Carrier is a generous glow-up from the traditional pet carrier. Clean lines give this carrier a modern profile and silhouette, while the all-black color gives it an edge against the competition. We love this carrier not just for its looks, but also how it performs. Details like a water-resistant lining, removable plush bedding with a reinforced bottom, a retractable privacy screen, and loads of pockets and storage areas keep pets and pet parents happy. This carrier is also one of four pet carriers certified by the Center for Pet Safety for use in the backseat of your car. We tested this on a 12-hour car ride with a 6-pound dog who does not typically like car rides, and the dog seemed comfortable and secure, sleeping for almost the entire ride. It’s worth noting that there is limited mesh paneling (only on the top and one side), which may cause some pets to get claustrophobic and/or limit breathability in some situations.

Best Car Seat Cover for Dogs

Urpower dog car seat cover.

  • Ease of Setup 5 /5
  • Functionality 5 /5
  • Ease of Cleaning 5 /5

It is easy to install and has high sides for full protection of your car and pet.

It’s got fixed measurements, so be sure it’ll line up correctly with your car’s backseat space.

Road tripping with your pet? Polyester and 600D PVC material keep this hammock-style cover sturdy, durable, and waterproof — and your backseat spotless. We thought installation was painless, but take note if the fixed measurements and anchor strap placement fits with your car before buying. We love the high all-sides protection this cover provides so you don’t have to worry about cleaning up any shedding or mess from the floor, doors, or seatbacks — or your pet crawling up into the front seat. Cleaning the cover is as easy as wiping it down with a damp cloth. A purposeful design includes slots for accessing seat belt bases so you can clip in your pet for the ride, a nonslip rubber backing for stability when on the move, and a storage pocket with a Velcro closure for pet essentials. It comes in seven neutral color options, including a multi-colored paw print pattern and two black variations with orange accents.

Best Portable Pet Bowl

Maxbone go portable bowls.

Maxbone

It’s a stylish silicone pet bowl that you can roll up and toss into your bag.

The bowl size may be more of a snack size for larger pets.

This roll-up, two-in-one silicone pet bowl set is our favorite way to feed our pets on the road and gives us one less thing to keep track of while in transit. Each set comes with two bowls approximately five by two inches that are connected to a larger flat mat measuring 15.4 by 9.3 inches. The bowls are more like walled wells, and each holds around two-and-a-half cups. We tried this out with a dog who loves to splash, but the built-in placement and the way the bowls are attached mat them virtually spill proof (anytime the dog did scoop out food or spill water, the silicone mat would catch it). We also found the soft silicone veasy to clean with soap and water, and we love how quickly it dries — two big pluses when you’re on the move. The fact that you can easily roll up the mat and stick these bowls into your pet’s carrier or a tote also scores big in our books. Plus, the geometric design of the bowls adds an element of style to a product that is usually bland. These Maxbone Go! Portable Bowls are also available in contemporary colors like mint, pale yellow, peach, and sand.

Best Dog Food Storage

Iris airtight food storage container.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Performance 2 /5
  • Durability 5 /5
  • Easy to Clean 5 /5

Both containers have easy-to-load, flip-top lids that snap shut.

The larger sizes may not be suitable for all types of trips.

This double-decker food storage container is an ideal way to keep your dog’s kibble fresh while on the road. We were big fans of the top-loading, flip-top lids and how well they stayed sealed shut when put to the test. Cleaning just takes a little bit of soap and water, though you’ll want to make sure the inside is completely dry before closing the lid to avoid mildew from moisture. The 35-pound capacity is great for longer trips or multiple dogs, and the wheely bottoms mean no heavy lifting. We also like that there’s an included scoop. While it may not be small enough to take on the plane, the top container can easily fit into the backseat or trunk of a car.

Best Cat Carrier

Maskeyon airline approved pet carrier.

  • Portability 4 /5

All sides can expand, but it still folds flat for easy storage.

The 19.5-inch length won’t be able to fly on several airlines.

Whether you’re heading to Vermont or the vet’s office, this expandable cat carrier is a smart way to give your cat a little extra space to lounge while you wait. We love that each side has an accordion-style, scratch-proof mesh expansion window, giving maximum configuration customization options. We transported a cat to the vet with all of the flaps folded in and then laid her out on a bench with some flaps unzipped when we got to the waiting room for extra space. Three exterior pockets keep travel essentials handy, and you have three zippered access and loading points, including from the top. This carrier can hold up to 20 pounds of cat, and you can carry it via built-in handles or a detachable shoulder strap. A soft-lined interior panel keeps kitty comfy, and it’s removable and machine-washable. The exterior is waterproof and wipes clean. The Maskeyon Airline Approved Pet Carrier is somewhat of a misnomer, though — its length exceeds several soft pet carrier requirements on a handful of airlines, including Delta, American Airlines, and United.

Best Dog Crate

Petmate pet kennel.

  • Performance 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

The metal grate is secure but super simple to open and close.

The small plastic handle makes it challenging to balance weight, especially if your dog is moving around inside.

This old-school dog crate carrier is a hardside option for transporting your pup. Assembly is quick and requires no tools, and there’s a small plastic carry handle. We like this carrier because it’s lightweight but sturdy and kept our pet secure during transport. It’s a bare-bones crate, but there’s enough room to put down a cushion or add your pup’s favorite toy. You can load dogs through the front gate or the top gate, both of which have a simple and easy pinch-and-lock feature. This crate is designed to hold up to 15 pounds of pup, but be warned that it can be difficult to balance weight sometimes since the plastic handle is small and placed at the center of the top.

Best Grooming Wipes

Floof renewing wipes.

They are biodegradable and don’t have a strong scent.

Don’t use these around your dog’s eyes or inside their ears — everywhere else is fair game.

These biodegradable, hypoallergenic cleansing wipes are a go-to grab that can function as a quick way to get rid of dirt and bacteria between baths or simply after a walk. Made from bamboo and other natural ingredients like soothing aloe and chamomile, these wipes are as good for the environment as they are for your pet. They are gentle enough to use from nose to tail (just avoid eyes and inside the ears), and we love that we don’t have to worry about dogs getting sick if they happen to lick an area that’s just been wiped. One of our editors keeps a pack stashed in their dog’s carrier to clean his paws after walks or to give a light, impromptu, all-over bath anytime on the go. Wipes come in 30-sheet packs with a plastic snap closure to seal in moisture, and they’re small enough to tuck into the pocket of your pet carrier for easy access.

Best GPS Collar

Link link smart pet wearable.

  • Accuracy 5 /5
  • Design 4 /5

It also works as a behavioral training device.

It requires a subscription to use.

Think of the Link Smart Pet Wearable Tracker as the Fitbit for dogs. This wearable takes GPS to the next level by also adding health and activity monitoring and behavioral training capabilities via sounds and vibrations. Plus, it works by transmitting location through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and mobile signals for the most accurate location information. You need to download an app, and we found it easy to set up and navigate. We were impressed by how accurate the tracking was through Google Maps, pinpointing not only the dog’s exact address, but also the specific area of the house she was moving through. This will be incredibly useful for travel or hiking with dogs. Owners will get alerts when their dog has moved beyond boundaries, and they can also set up temperature alerts, turn on the built-in flashlight through the app, and do real-time checks on health symptoms. There’s even a step counter. The catch? You’ll need a subscription for this wearable to work. Subscriptions have three options; monthly, yearly, and two-year. This wearable comes with two attachment options and a wall charger.

Best Dog Seat Belt

Kurgo direct to seat belt tether for dogs.

It puts the bulk of the pull against your dog's body, not their neck.

It is not compatible with certain models of trucks.

Unlike many dog seat belts, the Kurgo Direct to Seat Belt Swivel Tether for Dogs clips directly into your car's seat belt fastener versus looping around the headrest. This tether is designed to attach to a dog harness instead of a collar, centering the pull of the tether on your dog's torso rather than their neck. The swivel-head carabiner harness attachment also allows your pet to move around without getting tangled. While this car seat tether works with most cars, it is incompatible with the seat belt fasteners in Ford F-series trucks.

Best Cooling Jacket

Ruffwear swamp cooler dog harness.

It also fits medium or large cats.

You can’t put this in the dryer.

A top pet travel tip from Dr. Rendon is to "be mindful and plan for the temperatures of the places to which you are traveling" and prepare accordingly. Bring coats and booties if it's cold and cooling mats or vests if it's hot. The Ruffwear Swamp Cooler Dog Cooling Harness functions as an evaporative cooling vest and lightweight harness that stays wet to keep your pet up to six times cooler in high temps. Triple-layer cooling panels — wicking outer layer, absorbing middle layer, and an inner dry layer — are located along the chest, stomach, and back. A padded, quick-grab handle allows you to assist your pet easily when needed. Plus, the simple and intuitive side-buckle design makes it a snap to get on and off. The harness's aluminum V-ring clips and reinforced loops can hold up to the demands of rugged outdoor adventures. Bonus? The XXS size was a perfect fit for my medium-size, heat-intolerant (and harness-trained) cat. When it's time to clean, it calls for the gentle cycle and air dry only.

Best Heating Mat

K&h pet products heated thermo-kitty bed.

The heat level adjusts to your pet's body temperature.

It's too small for medium-to-large dogs.

To continue on the theme of preparing for the weather, you can keep your cat or small dog toasty with the K&H Thermo-Kitty Mat. The insertable dual thermostat heater is designed to warm up only when your pet lays on top. From there, it adjusts the heat level to your pet's internal temperature so it's always just right. This is a great travel pet accessory to take camping, on car rides in cold temperatures, or for accommodations without central heating. This bed is big enough for any size cat and small dogs.

Best Dog Boots

Ruffwear grip trex dog boots.

They provide great grip and heat protection.

The low-ankle design may cause paws to get wet in snow.

Ruffwear Grip Trex Dog Boots are high-quality, rubber-soled dog boots that protect your pet's paws on rugged terrain, hot rocks and sidewalks, and frosty or salted paths. Some owners even use these boots indoors on slippery hardwood floors thanks to the heavily textured Vibram outsoles. The actual shoes are made from mesh, giving your dog's paws a bit of breathing room in hot climates. The gusset design makes it easy to take these shoes off and on. While these shoes work well on salted pavement and in freezing temperatures (with socks), the short-rise design isn't ideal for walks in more than an inch or so of snow.

Best Water Bottle

Kalimdor dog water bottle.

The handy design and size also works for cats.

Some pets may not be comfortable drinking out of this unfamiliar shape.

Heat, stress, and anxiety may cause your pet to become thirstier and more dehydrated than usual. For trips with her small chihuahua, Dr. Love prefers the Kalimdor Portable Dog Water Bottle because of its small size and leak-proof design. This one-handed, two-in-one design has a plastic bottle base that can store up to 19 ounces of water (most bottles only hold up to 16 ounces). The scooped-out top functions as a water bowl that holds up to 2.8 ounces of water. Liquid is released directly into the drinking area by unlocking a switch and pushing a button. You can recollect any unused water in the storage bottle instead of tossing it out. The compact design makes it easy to carry in a travel bag or backpack, or you can loop it around your wrist. Our one note is that we wish this had a built-in filter.

Best Portable Litter Box

Travel cat porta pawty.

You don't have to toss out the litter at every stop.

The collapsible design translates to weak sides.

Finding a decent travel litter box is one of the biggest challenges of traveling with a cat. The Travel Cat Porta-Pawty Travel Litter Box solves multiple problems, including wasting litter. The zippered top and built-in side handle enables you to scoop and go, reusing the same lot of litter along multiple stops. Its construction also helps to block odors, which makes stays at pet-friendly hotels more comfortable for everyone involved. The top-flap design and standard litter box dimensions (19 by 14 by 5 inches) give your cat sufficient room to do their business. The seamless, leak-proof interior is a cinch to clean, and when you're not using the bag, it collapses, folds, and snaps into a rectangle that measures 9.75 by 8.5 by 4 inches. Litter helps the collapsible walls of this box stay up and sturdy, so don't hold back when filling it up.

Best Calming Supplement

Vetoquinol zylkene behavior.

It has a natural, non-sedative calming effect.

It may not be enough to calm some pets.

According to Dr. Rendon, "Zylkene calming supplements are derived from milk protein and recommended by behaviorists." They can be used for cats or dogs and are a good option for owners who want to try over-the-counter remedies before getting a sedating prescription like Gabapentin or Trazodone from their vet. This supplement's active ingredient, alpha-casozepine, has natural calming properties. Although it's derived from cow's milk, it is lactose-free. The dosage is administered according to weight and can be given in its original capsule form or as a powder mixed into food by opening the capsules. Dr. Rendon recommends starting the supplements a few days before travel. Every pet is different, and Zylkene may not be effective on some animals.

Best First-aid Kit

Adventure medical kits me & my dog.

It's a first-aid kit for both you and your dog.

It only covers four days of basic medical needs.

Love hiking with your dog or running on the beach together? Or do you just want to be prepared for everyday outing accidents? This first-aid kit is a two-in-one medical kit you can keep in your car or toss in your backpack before an outdoor adventure. It comes with two separate pouches of medical supplies — one for you and one for your dog — that can cover basic first-aid needs like splinter and tick removal, wound irrigation, cuts and scrapes, and more. There are enough supplies in each kit to last one person and one dog up to four days. Even though it comes with how-to medical guides, it's not meant for severe injuries.

We combed through results from seven different pet product tests to find some of the recommendations in this roundup, specifically looking for the most travel-friendly options. We tested over 130 pet products, including dog food storage containers, dog backpack carriers, dog car seats, car seat covers, cat carriers, dog crates, and GPS collars. Some staple attributes we tested for in each category included design, performance, value, and ease of use. For carriers, crates, and backpacks, we introduced the products to our pets, carried them around in the carrier, crate, or backpack for 10-15 minutes, and noted how comfortable the item was for both ourselves and our pets. We also did a test run through all the features and cleaning. For dog car seats, we drove around with our dogs in the car seat for a week and then cleaned the car seat, again noting how comfortable we both seemed and the ease of cleaning. All tested products were put through real-world testing scenarios in order to accurately assess their overall performance and value for readers and their pets. We also included T+L editor recommendations that they personally use for their own pets for portable pet bowls and grooming wipes.

Check airline and FAA requirements ahead of travel

Nearly every airline has its own rules for flying with a pet. Check with your airline well ahead of your flight to confirm if your animal will be able to fly on the plane. Many airlines accept service animals but limit the qualifications to certain breeds and type of service. Additionally, short-nosed breeds of cats and dogs such as pugs and Persians are often not allowed to fly in cargo due to breathing concerns . Most flights only allow for a maximum number of in-cabin pets per flight or will only fly with pets in the cargo during certain months. It's wise to make a reservation for your pet well in advance to secure them a spot on board.

Consider microchipping your pet

If your pet isn't already microchipped, your upcoming trip may be just the right excuse to get it done. This is to help others identify your pet and locate the owner in case your pet escapes or runs away during travel. Collars also provide this information but can easily slip off in different circumstances. Microchipping your pet is added protection that you'll be reunited if they get lost and may be required for international trips.

Map out walk and bathroom breaks ahead of time

When planning your trips and travel time, be sure to pencil-in some time for your pet to use the bathroom — and find out where they can relieve themselves. In some (but not all) airports, there are dedicated pet relief areas with fake grass where dog owners can take their pets to use the bathroom. Options for cat owners are far fewer, which is why having a portable litter box on hand is so, well, handy.

According to Dr. Rendon, one of the most important things you can do when traveling with your pet is to check each state or country's travel requirements well in advance of your trip. "You should contact your veterinarian or check the APHIS Pet Travel website for specific requirements," she says. "You may need a health certificate issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and approved by an APHIS veterinary officer in order to travel internationally. Your airline may also have specific requirements. Don't wait until the day before you travel to obtain the necessary paperwork!"

You must book a reservation for your pet in advance — some airlines allow you to do it online or through their app, while others will require a phone call.

"If you need to travel with your pet and they are too big to fly in the cabin with you (typically larger than 20 pounds), then cargo is a totally acceptable way to bring them," Dr. Love says. "It is always better to have them in the cabin with you because you can be with them, but that isn't always an option."

Both vets agree that the biggest downside to flying your pet in the cargo is that you're unable to monitor them or give them any anti-nausea or calming medicine as needed. Keep in mind that the cargo area is not temperature controlled and you should avoid flying your pets in very hot or very cold months.

One of the easiest ways to keep your pets safe while traveling is to keep them calm. "Don't wait until the day of travel to introduce your animal to a carrier or crate," suggests Dr. Rendon. "Place a familiar blanket or one of your worn T-shirts in the carrier with your animal so it smells like home. Carriers should be lined with a towel and covered with a disposable wee-wee pad that can be changed if an animal soils the pad mid-trip." She also recommends limiting the size of the meal you feed your pet before traveling in case of nausea.

Dr. Love recommends exercising your pet before travel so they are more relaxed or having someone sit in the backseat with them.

The cost of flying with a pet depends on the airline, where you are flying to, and whether you're flying your pet cargo or traveling with them inside the cabin. For example, Delta charges $95 for domestic flights with a carry-on pet, $75 for flights from the U.S. to Brazil, and $200 for other international flights, and you must contact the airline directly to determine cargo fees. United Airlines charges $125 each way for a carry-on pet for domestic flights. American Airlines charges $125 for a carry-on pet within and between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean (based on each country's entry policy).

Different airlines have restrictions on the age and breed of pets they allow to travel in the cabin. If your trip includes a voluntary stopover or connection of more than four hours, additional fees may apply for each connection segment. Check with your desired airline for specific pricing and restrictions.

Deciding how long your pet should ride in the car with you will be up to your individual pet. Some dogs may get antsy and need to go on their regularly scheduled walks, burn off energy, and use the bathroom. Monitor your pet during the car ride and check for signs of anxiety.

dog car seat

This car seat will help give your small dog a super comfortable spot to look out the window. And since he’ll be contained in one place, he won’t be distracting you by stumbling around the car or trying to get into your lap, so it’s great for keeping you both safe. This booster seat has a curved design that fits perfectly in your car seat for a more secure ride. It’s also super spacey and can even fit up to two small dogs at once. And since it’s machine washable, it’s perfect for trips to the dog park or other fun outdoor activities where he might get a bit messy (or for dogs who tend to get carsick).

dog travel bed

This dog bed will keep your pup nice and snuggly during long car rides, camping outdoors or pretty much any trip away from home. It can be rolled up and stored in the travel bag it comes with for easy transportation, and it’s machine washable in case it gets dirty. It even comes with a loop to hang it up to dry. Your pup will definitely appreciate that he has a comfy bed to cuddle up with in the car or at the hotel. It’s even great to have in the yard when you’re not traveling.

dog backpack carrier

If you’ll be doing a ton of walking on your trip, you should definitely consider a dog backpack carrier. It’s a convenient way to carry your pup hands-free, which is great if he’s tired. And since you’ll be carrying him on your back, you’ll save your arms from that heavy weight and be able to carry him for a lot longer, too. This bag from Kurgo is the perfect option since it has a ton of room and feels super sturdy. We even tested it with our own dogs, and we liked it so much we gave the Kurgo dog backpack our Paw of Approval.

dog car barrier

Back seat barriers are another great way to keep you and your pup safe in the car, since they prevent him from hopping up front and distracting you. This product is made from a mesh material that lets you see each other and allows air flow to the back of the car, but keeps your dog securely in the back. You might think the mesh makes the barrier flimsy, but the aluminum support bar that goes through the middle makes it basically impossible to break through — no matter how badly he wants to get to the front!

dog carrier

The pet carrier from Sherpa is super high-quality and a favorite for traveling dog parents. It has soft sides that can be pushed down so it fits perfectly in tight spaces (aka under the seat during your flight). You also have the option of putting your pet in the carrier through the top, which is actually a lot easier than trying to get your pet in through the sides (though you should slowly introduce your dog to the carrier days or weeks before your trip so he’s comfortable when it’s finally time to use it). This bag meets the standards of most major airlines, so you should have no problem bringing this with you in the cabin (but always check the details of your specific flight just to be safe).

collapsible dog bowl

This travel dog bowl is super convenient since it can fold down to half an inch, and it comes with a carabiner clip so you can attach it to your leash or luggage (and it weighs less than half a pound!). You can even fit it in your pocket if you need to. It’s pretty sturdy, too, so it won’t tip over easily. And for a quick clean, you can just put this dog bowl in the dishwasher. This model can only hold 1.5 cups of food, so if you have a bigger dog, try the large size , which holds 5 cups.

dog travel bag

Once you take one trip with this travel bag, you won’t want to bring your dog anywhere without it. The Modoker travel bag has everything you need when it comes to luggage for your dog. It has tons of compartments of all different sizes, two dog food storage containers, two collapsible food bowls and a waterproof place mat. It’s also airline approved, so it’s perfect for flights.

dog seat cover

This dog hammock is made with a super soft material that your dog will love to snuggle up with. The Grip-Tight technology makes this cover hard to move, so you can count on your dog staying put, even if the ride gets kinda bumpy. If you have a large pup, this is a great solution for keeping your pup safe in the car. It’s water resistant and super easy to wash, so you’ll be prepared for any mess your dog wants to bring in the car while you’re out and about. We reviewed the Orvis hammock , and our dogs loved it.

dog car crate

A dog crate is another safe way to travel with a small- to medium-sized dog in your car (if he’s comfortable with being in a crate). This crate from A4Pet is the perfect crate for the car, since it has a slanted structure that slides in perfectly to car seats, and even has straps to slip your seat belt through. It’s also totally collapsible, so you can hide it under your seats when it’s not in use. It’s definitely built with your dog’s comfort in mind; there’s mesh on all four sides for a 360 degree view, and it’s super roomy on the inside.

dog water bottle

This PupFlask is definitely a top choice. It’s made of high-quality stainless steel that will keep your pup’s drink nice and cold. The bowl is at the top and can be folded down so it’s not as bulky to carry around. The size of the bowl is pretty large too, which makes it perfect for larger, or multiple, dogs.

dog travel harness

The Kurgo harness was built for adventures. This no-pull harness is super comfortable for pups and lightweight, so he’ll barely know it’s there. It also comes with a safety strap so you can secure your pup to the seat belt in your car during car trips. This harness is actually super safe for driving, and was even crash-tested for dogs up to 75 pounds at the same facility where car seat performance tests for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are performed. It’s the perfect harness to go from hiking back to the car, all while keeping your dog protected. We tried the Kurgo harness on our own pups and gave it our Paw of Approval!

One of the greatest joys of traveling in an RV or car camping is being able to bring the dogs along. We loved every moment of our time on the road with our pups and this is a list of our essential dog travel accessories and camping gear along with recommendations from fellow dog owners.

11 Essential Dog Travel Accessories and Dog Camping Gear for 2024 2

Essential Dog Travel Accessories

The video below of our must have dog gadgets was filmed when we had a Class A RV towing a Jeep Wrangler . Even when we downsized to a ProMaster Class B RV most of these dog travel accessories made the cut. To learn more about traveling in an RV with your pups, check out our Guide to RVing with Dogs .

It’s worth mentioning the dog camping gear and dog travel accessories were tested and approved by our traveling dogs: Duke, the Belgian Malinois mix and Leo, the white Siberian Husky. Big or small, these camping essentials for dog are great for all sizes and breeds.

Table of Contents

1. Ruffwear Web Master Harness

One of our favorite dog camping gear items is this harness. We first used it with our dog Duke who, as he was getting older, was having some problems going up stairs or getting into the car. We’d use the harness to give him some extra support and help lift him when he would go to jump in the back of the Jeep. We also used it with Leo when we would go on a hike with Leo to help lift him up and over obstacles that he didn’t want to try and jump over. Neither dog had any problem walking with the harness on.

There are different sizes so it’s important to get the size for your dog. When Leo got older, the handle on the top of the dog harness allowed us to give him a lift when he needed it. Check out our Web Master Harness Review .

2. Air Tight Pet Food Storage Container

An air tight pet food storage container is essential when camping and traveling with your dog. This pet food container is pest-proof and good for keeping dry dog food fresh with an airtight seal. We used this to store the 40 pound bags of organic grain-free dog food that we would buy from Costco . This is especially helpful for RVers to help keep mice and other rodents out of your RV since they can’t get to the food.

Since our dogs have passed away, we gave our Vittles Vault to Joe’s mom and she uses it for Charley and Ruger, her yellow Labrador Retrievers. These dog food containers come in all sizes so make sure to get the right one that fits in your RV.

3. Dog Toys

Having a good dog toy to keep the pup entertained is especially helpful on travel days and makes it a great dog travel accessory. As first time Siberian Husky owners, we had no idea how strong and destructive Leo could be. He destroyed countless dog toys that claimed to be sturdy enough for a Husky, until we found the Kong Extreme . Not only is this toy sturdy, but it was a good mental workout for our dogs when we filled them with treats.

When we took Joe’s mom and her dog Charley cross-country for a whole summer, we brought along Charley’s Chuckit. The Chuckit with its heavy duty rubber ball was great for helping Charley work out all of her energy on long travel days. Joe has a bad shoulder so he’s not able to throw a ball but has no problem “chucking” the ball. It’s also nice since you can pick the ball up using the ball launcher and don’t have to bend over.

4. Dog Water Bowls

A good collapsible dog bowl will make your camping and RVing trips much more enjoyable. Whether staying put in the camper or going out for a hike, we always carried Leo’s collapsible water bowl with us. It’s lightweight, easy to carry and dries quickly making it one of the best dog traveling accessories.

For when you’re in the RV, a spill proof water bowl is essential. It allows you to keep water in the bowl while you’re driving and not worry about it spilling on a bumpy road. Even big RVs can have tight quarters and it’s easy to knock into stuff so this is very handy to help prevent spills if you accidentally step on it or bump it with your foot.

5. Dog Pack for Camping and Hiking

Leo’s dog pack served as a storage bag and adventure pack. When we would go on a long hike that required Leo to carry some gear, we would put the dog pack on him. When it wasn’t in use, it was a great storage pack for his toys and other essential dog camping gear. Since the Adventure Dog Pack we had is no longer available, the Ruffwear Approach Pack is a good alternative.

One interesting this we’ve found is that whenever we put this pack on a dog, they seem to go into “work mode”. There’s something about having a pack on with a little weight in it to make the dog feel like their doing something and it seems to settle them down if they happen to be over excited.

6. Heavy Duty Nylon Dog Leash

It goes without saying that a quality leash is an essential dog travel accessory. We used this heavy duty nylon dog leash for Duke and Leo. What we loved was the neoprene lined handle that made it very comfortable to hold.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this section of essential dog travel accessories and dog camping gear.

7. Hammock Seat Cover with Harness

Protect the inside of your vehicle with a good seat cover for dogs. Plus, your dog will appreciate it too! In the hammock configuration, Leo was more than comfortable in the back seat of our Jeep Wrangler. We often found him passed out in the back seat once we installed the seat cover. The version we used is no longer available, but this back seat cover is recommended by fellow RVers below.

Shane and Deanna, also known as DnSAdventures on YouTube and social media were full-time RVers for a couple years and traveled with their dog Blaze, a greyhound who retired from racing after about 3 years on the track.

One of Blaze’s favorite hobbies is sleeping, so keeping him comfortable while they traveled was very important. Shane and Deanna’s favorite dog gadget for the truck is his hammock that keeps him safe and secure on the backseat of their F350. It is easily cleaned and most importantly keeps him from slipping down in front of the backseat when he needs to move around or during any quick stops.

8. Pet Temperature Safety Monitor

Sarah Kuiken is a freelance writer traveling in a Grand Design Imagine travel trailer with her Siberian Husky, Orion. For the two of them, the absolute must-have gadget when RVing is a pet temperature safety monitor . Sarah mounted a sensor inside her travel trailer, and the unit will alert her via a mobile app if the temperature inside the trailer gets too high. We’ve all heard of horror stories of power outages or failed air conditioners, and never want to put our dogs at risk, so this monitor gives her peace of mind.

The dog safety temperature monitor relies on a cellular signal from AT&T to communicate with my phone, though, so if Sarah is outside of reliable cell range, she keeps a close eye on the weather and never leaves Orion in the trailer unattended if it will be a hot day. Of course, Sarah says that, “the best part about RVing with him is taking him with me on adventures!”

You can contact or follow Sarah and Orion at flourishwriting.com .

9. One-Piece Roto-Molded Dog Kennel

Jason and Emma Walsmith are a married couple who share a spirit of adventure and enjoy incorporating travel into their entrepreneurial lifestyles. They spend 1/2 the time on the road traveling in a Storyteller Overland MODE 4×4 Sprinter van , with their two dogs, Pepper who is a 10 year old Gordon Setter and Potter who is a 3 year old English Setter. As you might guess, Jason and Emma are “Setter people.” You can find them on Instagram @Falkorvan .

They upgraded standard plastic dog crates to two Ruffland “backseat” Kennels. The Ruffland Kennels are made in the USA ( South Dakota ) and while they are much more expensive than your standard dog crate they are also a big upgrade in safety and build quality.

The features they appreciate are the kennels one piece, roto molded construction that adds rigidity and strength as well as efficiency of space. They chose the backseat model that are designed to sit back to back in the backseat of a vehicle but fit perfectly and free up space in their van’s garage. The kennels feature a rattle free/reversible door that works well for packing strategies. The kennels are sturdy so they feel comfortable stacking bags and gear on top of them.

10. K9 Cube Doggie Go-Bag

Matt and Lara are both healthcare professionals with a passion experiencing the outdoors. Anytime they can include their pup Cima, a three year old female Samoyed, on adventures, they bring her. Currently, they’re traveling in a 06’ Honda Element AWD with Westfalia style Pop-Top made by Ursa Minor. You can follow Cima’s adventures on Instagram @cima_the_samoyed .

Think of this as a doggie go-bag . Any trip they have all of Cima’s things ready to go on a moments notice in there. Makes for a simple solution to declutter a small vehicle and bring 1 thing for her. Has a food grade storage container, collapsible bowls attached, room for toys, first aid kit, poop bags, etc. This is also what they grab if she’s having a doggy sleepover at a friends house. Additionally it’s great that Mountainsmith is a local Colorado company, with rad people based in Golden where they live.

11. Wireless Temperature & Humidity Sensor

Kenny & Sabrina traveled full-time for over four years in their Winnebago Vista LX 27N Class A RV with their Mt Feist dog Belle and you can find them on Instagram @movingforwardadventures .

Temp Stick is a small wireless device that measures the temperature and humidity in the RV and can send them alerts to their phone wherever they are. They like that it allows them to connect to any of their hotspots, because they use two Verizon and AT&T hotspots depending on the area they are in and the Temp Stick has no service fees. Sabrina is a pulmonary/critical care physician doing locum work which means they travel based on her work, this puts them in hot climates in the summer and having the Temp Stick in the RV gives them the peace of mind needed that Belle is safe in the RV and that their cooling system is working properly.

Hope you found this list of essential dog travel accessories helpful!

Do you leave AC run when you leave in van?

Hello, I have been following you for awhile and have been fascinated with the anchor device used for Leo’s leash when relaxing outside. I have looked and cannot find anything like it. But, I also wonder how it keeps him from running off since it does not look heavy at all. I have a large dog (80 lbs.) that when focused on something has selective hearing. He can be difficult to control and I need a very heavyweight, portable restraint system for him. Would love to know more about what you use. Thanks!

Hey Lynn – we use a 10lb kettle bell that you can find at any store that sells exercise equipment. If Leo really wants to he can take off with it, but it slows him down more than enough for us to grab him.

The dog you had with you on the hc1 video is a gorgeous dog. What’s the breed? Thanks, Linda 9725229626. I love your work.

Hi Linda. Not sure what breed the pup is. You can always contact Happier Camper and ask them. The pup belongs to the owner of the company.

14 travel essentials to keep your dog safe and comfortable on road trips, recommended by experts

  • If you're taking a road trip with your dog, you'll need to ensure their safety and comfort.
  • We rounded up the best gear for driving in the car with a dog, including a dog crate and harness .
  • You can protect your dog from overheating on the road with window shades and plenty of water.

Insider Today

Americans across the country are hitting the road with dogs as their copilots this summer. Whether your plan is to hike and camp , explore back roads and under-the-radar towns, or visit family and friends, the promise of an adventure on the open road is intoxicating not just for you but for your dog, too.

To ensure the success of a road trip with your pup, you'll need a handful of dog car travel accessories to keep them safe and comfortable during long drives. As a professional dog trainer by day and travel writer by night, I have years of experience hitting the road with dogs. I've combed through my own gear to come up with this list of essentials for a canine-friendly road trip.

For expertise on traveling safely with a dog in the hot summer months, I've consulted with veterinarian Tanya Fraser , medical director of VCA Allendale Animal Hospital in Allendale, Michigan, and Lindsey Wolko, founder of the Center for Pet Safety in Reston, Virginia. Below we've rounded up our favorite travel gear as well as tips for traveling safely with your dog .

Here are 14 of the best dog car travel accessories for a canine-friendly road trip:

A crash-tested kennel to protect your dog in a collision.

big dog travel accessories

Gunner G1 Kennel, available at Gunner, from $499

According to Wolko, you should never travel with your dog in a plastic crate that has been buckled in with a car seat belt because it can easily fracture in a crash. Instead, use a crash-test-certified crate to give your pet the best possible chance of survival in a crash. The Center for Pet Safety has tested several crates for their Center for Pet Safety certified list , including the Gunner G1 Kennel, which received a five-star crash-test rating. It's also a top pick in our guide the best airline cat carriers . Crating may also help alleviate motion sickness in some dogs, according to Fraser.

A foldable car ramp for pets with mobility issues

big dog travel accessories

Petsafe Happy Ride Bi-Fold Pet Ramp, available at Chewy , Amazon , and Wayfair , from $74.95

Just because a dog's mobility is limited doesn't mean they aren't an ideal road trip companion. Bring along a lightweight car ramp to make your travels with an older or disabled dog go more smoothly and save you from having to lift them in and out of the vehicle 20 times a day. In between stops, just fold up the ramp and slide it behind the seat for easy storage.

A crash-tested harness to travel safely with your dog outside of a crate

big dog travel accessories

Sleepypod Clickit Sport Dog Safety Harness, available at Sleepypod, $94.99

Sleepypod Clickit Terrain Dog Safety Harness, available at Sleepypod, $94.99

Testing done by the Center for Pet Safety indicates that a crash-test-certified travel harness is an effective way to keep a dog safe on a road trip, especially a dog that has never been crate trained or that suffers from confinement distress. Sleepypod's Clickit Sport Harness and Terrain Harness each earned a five-star rating. They attach to the seat belts in the back seat of a car through built-in loops.

Read our full review of the Sleepypod Clickit Sport harness .

Shades to block the sun and keep car temperatures down

big dog travel accessories

Munchkin Brica Window Shade, available at Buy Buy Baby , Target , and Amazon , from $14.99

Even with the air conditioning on full blast, the interior of the car can heat up to uncomfortable levels when temperatures get extreme outside. Sunshades can help to minimize the greenhouse effect inside the car by blocking the heat out. Don't expect them to help when you've parked the car, though. Temperatures can skyrocket inside a parked car in just minutes. "Never leave your dog in the car, even with the windows down, and even for just a few minutes," said Fraser.

A hammock-style seat cover to keep paw prints and dirt at bay

big dog travel accessories

Orvis Grip-Tight Windowed Hammock Seat Protector, available at Orvis, from $189

If any portion of your road trip involves hiking, camping, or other explorations of the great outdoors, do yourself a favor and get a water-resistant seat cover to protect your car from moisture and dirt. This version from Orvis blankets the back seat and the backs of the front seats. A see-through mesh panel between the two front seats prevents your dog from feeling too isolated.

A soft, washable blanket that doubles as a dog bed

big dog travel accessories

Carhartt Dog Blanket, available at Amazon  and Carhartt , from $84.99

If you're exhausted by the end of a day of driving, so is your dog. Whether you're staying in a hotel or camping overnight, pack something soft and cozy for your pup to cuddle up in. I always bring a soft, washable blanket along for the ride. Not only is a blanket easy to fit into an overstuffed trunk, it's ultra-portable and can double as a dog bed whenever needed.

A pet first-aid kit just in case

big dog travel accessories

Adventure Dog Series Medical Kit, available at Chewy, $27.49

From foxtails to ticks, there are dozens of nasty surprises that await your dog on a road trip. Be prepared for the dangers in your path with a high-quality pet first-aid kit. Fraser also recommends downloading the American Red Cross's Pet First-Aid app to help you navigate minor injuries. If you're headed for a specific destination, she suggests looking up a local emergency clinic before you arrive.

An insulated water bottle with a dog bowl built right in

big dog travel accessories

Kong H20 Stainless Steel Dog Water Bottle, available at Amazon and Chewy , from $11.21

Whether you're on a nature walk or in a socially distanced beer garden, keep your dog hydrated with a combination water bottle and dog bowl. This version from Kong is made of insulated stainless steel that will keep liquids cool and refreshing all day long.

A spill-minimizing bowl so your dog can quench their thirst anytime they want

big dog travel accessories

Heininger Waterboy Portable Pet Bowl, available at Chewy, $24.95

Heininger's portable water bowl, which has a reservoir that fills with water when laid flat, has lived in my car on and off for years. Leave it out while you drive — the well has been designed to minimize spillage — or stand it up to drain the well water back into the jug. The BPA-free device holds up to 3 quarts of liquid.

A long line to let your dog safely explore new environments

big dog travel accessories

Signature K9 Biothane Long Line, available at Amazon, from $34.99

Even if your dog has an excellent recall, the allure of the new environments they'll be exploring on your road trip may prove more powerful than your cue. Bring along a 15- to 20-foot long line to give your dog some freedom while ensuring they remain out of trouble.

Interlocking treat-dispensing puzzle toys to help alleviate boredom

big dog travel accessories

West Paw Toppl, available at Chewy , Walmart , and West Paw , from $18.95

Keep your dog from getting restless on the road by occupying them with treat-dispensing puzzle toys. West Paw's Toppl can be stuffed with treats, spread with peanut butter, or sprayed with cheesy goodness. For smarty pants dogs, try combining a large Toppl with a small one to create a toy that's a bit more challenging.

Grooming wipes or waterless shampoo to quickly remove grime and nasty smells

big dog travel accessories

Earthbath Green Tea & Awapuhi Grooming Wipes, available at Petco, $15.99

Bodhi Dog Waterless Lavender Dog Dry Shampoo, available at Chewy  and  Amazon , $13.99

On the road, there may be hundreds of miles between you and the closest dog-washing station, but if your dog is living their best road trip life, chances are they'll need at least a little cleanup before your trip is over. Grooming wipes are an easy way to freshen up your dog's coat or remove debris from their paws or muzzle. If you've got a dog that loves to roll in stinky things, I can tell you from experience that you'll need something stronger to remove the stench. A waterless dog shampoo works a bit better and it never hurts to bring a bottle along for the ride.

A dog-size backpack for outdoor adventures

big dog travel accessories

Ruffwear Approach Dog Pack, available at  Ruffwear , Backcountry , and REI , from $53.93

If you plan on doing a lot of hiking or backpacking on your road trip, it's only fair that your dog should carry their share of the gear. Always limit your dog's load to no more than 25% of their body weight and make sure the pack fits properly before your adventure.

A folding travel crate for use inside a hotel room

big dog travel accessories

Orvis Hose-Off Folding Travel Crate, available at Orvis, $159

To keep everyone safe when you leave your hotel room, you'll need a portable crate to set up inside your room. While most hotels don't require this, I've heard one too many horror stories about a hotel staff member who has been bitten after walking into a room with a canine guest. Choose something that collapses flat and has a handle for easy carrying. I like Orvis's version, which also has two doors and plenty of ventilation and comes with a padded fleece mat.

Additional safety tips for road trips with dogs

To ensure the success of a road trip with your pup, you'll need a handful of items to keep them safe and comfortable during long drives. Dogs also need regular breaks from the road, just like we do. "Stopping every few hours to get out, move around, and use the bathroom is ideal," said Fraser.

All that driving also increases the possibility that your dog may, at some point, experience some car sickness. Most dogs outgrow motion sickness in puppyhood, according to Fraser, but if your dog is prone to nausea in the car, things like withholding food for a few hours before traveling or letting your dog see out the window can help. Roll down the window for additional airflow but not so low that your dog can thrust their head into the wind. That's very dangerous. "You know the sound your windshield makes when a rock hits it? Imagine your dog being hit by that rock. Ouch!" Wolko said.

Before you embark on your trip, Fraser recommends making sure your pet is up-to-date on their vaccines and parasite control. Consult your vet if you have questions. They can also provide you with anti-nausea medication if your dog frequently experiences motion sickness.

Travel Preparation Tips

Get your pup cleared for travel. Ensuring that your dog is healthy and good to travel is a must when thinking of going long distances, whether it is by plane, train, or car. A quick check-up at the vet is easy and will put your mind at ease. Make sure you tell your vet which way you plan to travel so they can give you the best recommendation.

Long Car Trips

Short car rides typically aren’t a problem with dogs, but long trips, however, and trips that last hours at a time, require a bit of planning. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Take a longer trip in the car (with your pet travel accessories on hand) as a test drive to see how your pup behaves before the longer trip.
  • Use the above pet travel gear keep your pup from roaming around in the car. This will make the drive safer for your pup and remove any distractions for yourself while you’re on the road.
  • Stop occasionally for a break or two to let your pup stretch his legs and drink small amounts of water. Let them get exercise when the trip is over, too. Everyone wants to move around after a long trip!
  • Go easy on the amount of water they drink a few hours before the car ride to help prevent any in-car potty breaks. Luckily a dog car seat cover can help with clean up if an accident happens.

First timer? No problem. Dogs travel on airplanes all the time, but it’s important to know the rules of the airline you’re traveling with as some airlines have tighter restrictions than others and sizing can affect the travel for your pet. Make sure to research the restrictions and recommendations of the airline you’re traveling on to have the most accurate information.

Hotel Stays

So, you’ve done the research and found a hotel that accepts your furry friends! Often, these hotels also have good parks, hikes , and areas they can recommend for you to take them. In order to make their stay more comfortable, be sure to pack familiar items for your pets, like blankets, dog bed, and toys, that will help them feel safe and remind them of home.

Don’t forget!

crest stone explore dog hiking pack

Keep a copy of your pet’s vaccine records with your travel bags in case you need to access records after your vet’s office is closed, make sure they are up to date before you leave!

Also find the contact info for the closest emergency vet as soon as you reach your destination (if not before). Having this information before an emergency occurs can save precious time if the worst were to happen.

Make it home safe

Microchipping is a popular means of identification for your pet if they were ever lost. Keep your information up to date with the microchip company to ensure if your pet was lost they have the most current information to reach you.

Practice basic obedience. When your pet listens to basic commands: sit, stay, down, off, leave it, they can readily avoid trouble if it arises. Additionally, ensuring your pet has good car “manners” can help avoid “darting” out of car doors or windows.

Have fun and happy travels!

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

big dog travel accessories

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

big dog travel accessories

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

big dog travel accessories

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

big dog travel accessories

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

big dog travel accessories

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

big dog travel accessories

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

big dog travel accessories

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

big dog travel accessories

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

big dog travel accessories

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

big dog travel accessories

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

big dog travel accessories

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

big dog travel accessories

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

big dog travel accessories

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

big dog travel accessories

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

big dog travel accessories

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

big dog travel accessories

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

big dog travel accessories

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

big dog travel accessories

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.

The Best Shopping Malls in Moscow

Aviapark

Nestled within one of the globe’s most opulent metropolises, Moscow’s shopping scene paints a diverse canvas that caters to every shopper’s desire. From extravagant luxury labels to trendy high-street fashion, this Russian capital is a treasure trove where shopping transcends budgets. Amid the city’s labyrinthine streets, shopping centers emerge as attractions in their own right, offering an experience that goes beyond retail therapy. Join us as we explore seven illustrious shopping malls that satiate your appetite for both indulgence and retail delights in the heart of Moscow.

Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? Pick from authentic, immersive Epic Trips , compact and action-packed Mini Trips and sparkling, expansive Sailing Trips .

Russia’s main department store, the Moscow GUM is an ultimate architectural stunner, housing a variety of high-end boutiques. Built between 1890 and 1893 and known as the Upper Trading Rows until 1920, the legendary store is now home to over 200 boutiques selling a variety of brands: from luxury Dior to affordable Zara. Even if luxury shopping is not on your to-do list, the Moscow GUM is still worth a visit – the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square, offers a variety of tasty Soviet-style eateries and makes a fantastic view in the dark.

Beautifully located in the historic centre of Moscow, the TSUM Department Store is mere steps from the city’s important tourist attractions, including Red Square. Built in 1908, the Gothic style store sells over 1000 famous brands, including Alexander McQueen, Lanvin and Carolina Herrera. Much like its cousin GUM, the TSUM Department Store is known for its luxury boutiques, stunning architecture and great eateries.

Okhotny Ryad

Okhotny Ryad Shopping centre is yet another shopping mall in the proximity of Red Square, which unlike GUM and TSUM offers a more down-to-earth price tag. One of the largest shopping centres in Moscow, this underground arcade is home to over 160 brands of apparel, footwear, jewelry, makeup and perfumes. Okhotny Ryad is also known for its great food court, where most tourists come to stop by, once they’ve done a tour of the Kremlin .

Tsvetnoy Central Market

A pure hipster heaven, the Tsvetnoy Central Market, or simply Tsvetnoy is seven floors of shopping, eating and fun. From the high street ground floor to the deluxe boutiques on the fifth, Tsvetnoy sells brands for every taste and budget, including Walk of Shame, American Apparel, All Saints, and Vivienne Westwood. Awarded by multiple design accolades, the beautiful shopping mall is also home to many great pop-up shops, Moscow’s biggest Rive Gauche store and the best indoor farmer’s market in the city.

AFIMALL City

Somewhat farther from the city centre, AFIMALL City is a dramatically less crowded and very impressive shopping mall right in the heart of Moscow City Business District. Praised for its innovative design, the store comprises five levels of retail space with over 400 shops, 50 restaurants and cafĂŠs and an IMAX cinema. Built for adults and children alike, AFIMALL City is a must if you plan on visiting Moscow City Business District.

Metropolis Shopping Centre

Metropolis

Metropolis is where you should go for high-street retail if you don’t feel like traveling too far from the city centre. Home to boutiques like Zara, Marks & Spencer, H&M, New Yorker, GAP and River Island, Metropolis also houses a huge supermarket, bowling alley, swimming pool and a cinema.

Aviapark Shopping Centre

Aviapark

Of all the malls on the list, Aviapark takes the most time to get to, but Europe’s biggest mall is definitely worth the free shuttle bus ride. With over 500 stores, 80 eateries and a 17-screen cinema, all spread across the equivalent of 36 football pitches, Aviapark is officially the most popular shopping mall in Moscow. However, the major draw of the glass-roofed shopping centre is the 24-meter-tall pillar aquarium, filled with tropical fish.

KEEN TO EXPLORE THE WORLD?

Connect with like-minded people on our premium trips curated by local insiders and with care for the world

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
