Multi-platinum-selling pop-rock band,  5 Seconds of Summer , will release their live album  The Feeling of Falling Upwards – Live from The Royal Albert Hall  digitally on  April 14 . Physical formats of the album are up for pre-order  NOW  and will be available on  July 14 .

The band is also excited to announce their  2023 World Tour –  The 5 Seconds of Summer Show –   which includes dates in South America, UK, Europe and North America with an appearance at the  When We Were Young  festival in Las Vegas. The tracks are taken from the band’s 2022 one-of-a-kind performance  “The Feeling of Falling Upwards”  at the world-famous Royal Albert Hall in London, a venue the band busked outside of when they moved to the UK to write for their very first album 10 years ago. The performance included reimagined versions of songs from their 11-year catalog including brand-new songs from their critically acclaimed fifth studio album  5SOS5 , accompanied by a 12-piece string orchestra and a 12-member gospel choir.

“’The Feeling of Falling Upwards’ is simply supposed to describe to you the feeling that we have experienced together, the feeling of taking a leap of faith on such a fickle thing like music,”  expressed vocalist and drummer Ashton Irwin on stage at Royal Albert Hall,  “And sharing this experience together year after year, season after season of our lives.”

5 Seconds of Summer are looking to take over the world once more with the announcement that they’ll be taking The 5 Seconds of Summer Show worldwide in the form of a 42-date world tour.

Kicking things off on the North American side in Uncasville, CT, at the Mohegan Sun Arena on August 10, the pop-rock group will wrap up their tour with appearances at the When We Were Young Festival while in between making stops throughout Europe and the UK.

Tickets for The 5 Seconds of Summer Show will go onsale through a presale on Tuesday, April 11, with the general onsale for the North America and Europe dates starting Friday, April 14 at 10 AM local time. For South American fans, stay tuned for more information.

The US tour kicks off August 10 in Uncasville, Connecticut before hitting East Coast cities such as Boston, Toronto, Detroit, Bristow, Philadelphia, New York, and more. The run concludes with what will surely be an epic performance at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on September 14. From there, the band will travel to Europe and the UK. That leg of the global tour kicks off on September 23 in Lisbon, Portugal, and wraps up on October 12 in Prague, Czech Republic.

Before they were a multi-platinum selling band with an international fanbase of millions, 5 Seconds of Summer was the angst-driven passion project of four teenage boys in Sydney, Australia.

Guitarists Luke Hemmings and Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood, and drummer Ashton Irwin had all been students of the pop punk genre prior to coming together in 2011 – they’d learned about ditching their hometown and the uncertainty of love from Mayday Parade; discovered the art of striking a balance between humor and depth from  Blink-182 , and Green Day gave them a crash course in rebellion. These influences – merged with each member’s own individual creativity – created the distinctive 5SOS sound.

5 Seconds of Summer’s propensity for staying in sync as the project of four musicians with distinct influences and skills is what has allowed them to consistently reconstruct their sound across their four albums. Learning from their work, rather than being anchored by it, Clifford, Hood, Hemmings, and Irwin are on pace for continued evolution.

Multi-platinum-selling pop-rock band, 5 Seconds of Summer, will release their live album The Feeling of Falling Upwards - Live from The Royal Albert Hall digitally on April 14. Physical formats of the album are up for pre-order NOW and will be available on July 14.

The tracks are taken from the band's 2022 one-of-a-kind performance "The Feeling of Falling Upwards" at the world-famous Royal Albert Hall in London, a venue the band busked outside of when they moved to the UK to write for their very first album 10 years ago.

The performance included reimagined versions of songs from their 11-year catalog including brand-new songs from their critically acclaimed fifth studio album 5SOS5, accompanied by a 12-piece string orchestra and a 12-member gospel choir.

From The 60s To Today, Here Are Some Of Our Favorite Boy Bands

Sure, the idea of men playing music together has been around forever, but the 1960s saw a shift from boys playing together in a band, to bonafide boy bands. These new boy bands were characterized as being young, good looking, and their music was usually marketed towards women.

From The Jackson 5 to the Backstreet Boys, there's a boy band for every generation. There's a good chance you've been a die-hard fan of at least one of them. Keep reading and take a musical trip back in time to when your room was covered in posters and you were begging your parents to take you to see these iconic boy bands.

The Beatles

Not only are they one of the most influential bands of all time but The Beatles are credited as being the first real boy band, and that's before anyone had even coined the term!

It's hard to think of a band before them that made teenagers scream at the top of their lungs and buy every Beatle-related magazine out there. Even the way they were marketed to the public is reminiscent of the later boy bands to come. They didn't call it "Beatlemania" for nothing.

The Monkees

It was the massive success of The Beatles that actually inspired a TV producer to think up a TV show about the misadventures of a band. The four actors on The Monkees were hired for their acting skills and their singing, and it didn't take long for them to learn how to perform live and transform into the band they played on TV.

In two seasons the show—and technically the band—had six number one hits. It marked the first time we saw a boy band orchestrated.

The Jackson 5

Family boy bands are a dime a dozen today, but The Jackson 5 were the first to do it. Tito, Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon, and of course, Michael made up the iconic R&B group. The five of them had been performing together for years before actually being signed.

The Jackson 5 were the first to do some seriously iconic things like perform with close harmonies, insert catchy pop music hooks, and use choreographed dance moves.

The Osmonds

Yet another brotherly boy band, The Osmonds, rose to fame in the 1960s. The four oldest brothers started as a barbershop quartet until a music producer convinced them if they changed styles, they could be as successful as The Jackson 5.

The youngest sibling, Donny Osmond, fronted the band and provided a squeaky-clean option for teenage girls to obsess over all along the midwest. The Osmonds were also the first boy band to be promoted by Disney, and we know how much Disney loves boy bands now.

Bay City Rollers

Most boy bands fizzled out by the 1970s until the Bay City Rollers debuted in 1974. The boys from Scotland managed to combine the '70s new love of rock with pop music. At the time, they were the biggest British boy band since The Beatles.

Thanks to the U.K. success with songs like "Saturday Night and "Money Honey" their music label decided to take a chance and send them on tour in America. It paid off when "Saturday Night" topped out at No. 1 on the U.S. charts.

The success of boy bands in America and Britain spread around the world and even to Puerto Rico, where Menudo was formed. The group began in the 1970s with the concept that the lineup would continuously change when the members got older. That way, Menudo was also packed with young, handsome Puerto Rican boys to appeal to teens.

The new idea works and Menudo has had a steady fan base in Puerto Rico and America since 1983. The group also notably launched the career of Ricky Martin.

New Edition

You can thank childhood friends Bobby Brown (yes, that Bobby Brown), Michael Bivins, and Rickey Bell for forming the first version of New Edition. The three added some more friends and became stars after their single "Candy Girl" became a No. 1 R&B hit.

New Edition followed up their success with eight other top-40 hits. Many didn't know it at the time but New Edition had just kicked off the era of 1980s boy bands.

New Kids On The Block

It was the success of New Edition that inspired music producer Maurice Starr to put together a hand-picked boy band. New Kids On The Block's (NKOTB) first album was filled with bubblegum pop and a huge flop. It wasn't until the second album when the incorporated other styles of the time like synth and rap that the boy band took off.

NKOTB was also the first boy band to become commercially successful thanks to merchandise like lunch boxes, comic books, and even a cartoon.

The success of NKOTB led to British music producers trying to see if they could make boy bands work again. What they ended up with was Take That, a five-person British pop group that soon dominated the British pop charts. Even U.S. teens at the time would remember hearing songs like "It Only Takes A Minute" on their radio.

The group was highly successful until one of the members, Robbie Williams, left the group due to drug abuse and their image went downhill.

Boyzone was basically the Irish version of Take That and essentially kicked off the U.K. battle of the boy bands. The creation of Boyzone would become commonplace in the '90s: a music producer held auditions with hundreds of singers, finally settled on a lineup, and gave each member a specific "character."

Most of Boyzone's top singles at first were actually covers of other boy band songs like The Osmonds' "Love Me For A Reason."

Boys II Men

Inspired by New Edition, Boyz II Men formed in the late 1980s and combined soulful R&B music with pop hits. Many of their singles were love ballads that made teenage and adult women swoon.

Boyz II Men are notable for being one of the boy bands who had "crossover appeal." Their music was played on Top 40 and original R&B stations. Even parents liked listening to singles like "One Sweet Day" and "I'll Make Love To You."

Backstreet Boys

Finally, we enter the golden age of boy bands with the Backstreet Boys. Arguably one of the most popular groups of all time, the Backstreet Boys followed the new template of auditioning tons of individual singers to craft the perfect boy band.

They were formed in 1993 but it wasn't until their first single "Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)" became a top 10 that America got Backstreet Boys fever. Their 1999 album "Millennium" holds the record for most albums sold in one week.

The arch nemesis of the Backstreet Boys was created in the same way by the same entrepreneur music producer, Lou Pearlman. *NSYNC member Chris Kirkpatrick was cut last minute from the Backstreet Boys, so Pearlman decided to create another group with Kirkpatrick.

*NSYNC essentially followed the exact same path as the Backstreet Boys and in 1998, their debut single "I Want You Back" reached the top of the charts. The band was on track to out-perform the Backstreet Boys until one ramen-noodle-haired member AKA Justin Timberlake left the group for a solo career.

98 Degrees was a little different from other boy bands of the late '90s in that they formed the group themselves and actually wrote a lot of their own material. They earned a record contract for Motown Record and first landed a hit in 1997 with "Invisible Man."

They went on "hiatus" in 2003 so Nick Lachey could try a solo career and marry Jessica Simpson. 98 Degrees reunited in 2012 and their album peaked at a disappointing No. 65 of the charts.

The '90s were all about handcrafted boy bands but Hanson decided to try their hand at the brotherly band template. The three Hanson brothers—Zac, Taylor, and Isaac—built a cult-like following in Oklahoma with their independent albums but mad it big in 1995 with "MMMBop."

"MMMBop" was a throwback to the bubblegum pop sounds and adolescent vocals pioneered by groups like The Jackson 5 and The Osmonds. Unfortunately, Hanson was basically just a one-hit-wonder and even though they've steadily released independent albums over the years, it has never been the same.

Yet another boyband creation by music entrepreneur Lou Pearlman, LFO tried to blend bubblegum pop with hip hop. LFO (which stands for Lyte Funkie Ones) featured Rich Cronin, Brad Fischetti, and Brian Gillis. The three were initially successful with covers, like their redux of NKOTB's "Step By Step."

The boy band underwent a few different lineups over the years and had relative success with other singles like "Summer Girls" but they seemed to appeal more to young kids than teenage girls.

This English boy band may have had the choreographed dance moves and young fan base, but their R&B and pop inspirations made them a surprise critical hit. The group formed in 2000 and all three of their studio albums went to No. 1. Their fans weren't just teenage girls though. Blue recorded songs with legendary artists like Stevie Wonder and Elton John.

The boy band broke up in 2005 but reunited in 2011 to represent the U.K. in Eurovision.

The insane success of boy bands in the '90s led to the MTV reality show Making the Band , which set out just to make a boy band. O-Town was the result of the first season and was even managed by yep, you guessed it, Lou Pearlman. The group was named after Orlando, Florida despite none of the four members being from the area.

O-Town had some success with their first albums thanks to the popularity of the show but their second album failed miserably and they disbanded by 2003.

While Lou Pearlman was busy making a million boy bands in America, a British music producer Simon Cowell (you might recognize the name) had the same idea across the pond. His first boyband, Westlife, was formed in 1999 and became huge stars after being the opening act for the Backstreet Boys.

With singles like "Swear It Again" and twelve other No. 1 tracks, Westlife went on to be one of the most successful groups in the U.K. They even managed to survive the 2000s and stay together until 2012.

Another notable British boy band for the early 2000s was Busted. They had actually formed themselves and tried to get signed by none other than Simon Cowell but he famously passed on the group. Instead, they set out to release their own debut record and had top singles with "What I Go To School For" and "Year 3000."

The three members of Busted claimed to be inspired by pop-punk rock bands like Green Day and Blink-182 which led to the different boy band sound of the 2000s.

The Jonas Brothers

The rise of the Jonas Brothers in the mid-2000s was Disney's first real attempt to dominate the market. The three siblings—Kevin, Joe, and Nick—had formed themselves but only became boy band superstars thanks to their promotion on Disney. The group had to maintain a cleaner image to appeal to teens, unlike the '90s boy bands who touched on more adult themes.

The Jonas Brothers turned their boy band into a Disney franchise with multiple movies, a television show, and by being connected with other Disney stars like Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato.

Big Time Rush

This pop boy band followed almost the exact same template that the Jonas Brothers set out but with Nickelodeon, not Disney. They formed in 2009 and landed their own television series Big Time Rush the same year. Just like with Disney, Nickelodeon forced the band to be more "child-friendly."

Big Time Rush was one of the few boy bands to be praised by music critics though and was even voted the "Best Boy Band In The World" in 2012.

This four-person British boyband was originally named UFO when they auditioned for the British talent show The X Factor in 2006. They were forced to change their name due to copyright issues but it worked in their favor because after placing second on the show, they were immediately signed to a record contract.

JLS incorporated more R&B to their pop singles and found quick success. Five of their first seven singles included "She Makes Me Wanna" went to No. 1 on the British charts.

This British-Irish boy band was another hand-picked group formed in 2009. This British band was set up by producer Scooter Braun, who was also known at the time for his work with Justin Bieber. The Wanted released their first No.1 single "All Time Low" in 2010 and became British sensations.

Their fame translated to America in 2011 with the single "Glad You Came." With their U.S. success, The Wanted even went on to land their own reality series but their world tour was canceled after they broke up in 2014.

In the summer of 2010, members of the Backstreet Boys joined New Kids On The Block on stage at Radio City Music hall, and people went wild. It sparked rumors of both bands reuniting but instead, the two '90s-era boy bands formed a supergroup. The name came by combining the initials of each band.

Even though the supergroup only released on album and one single, they proved that reunited boy bands could find serious success now that their nostalgic fans are all grown up with cash flow.

One Direction

Simon Cowell wasn't looking to create a new boy band in 2010 when Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry, and Louis all separately auditioned on The X Factor . Cowell simply believed they would be a stronger act together and after the group placed third, they were immediately signed to a contract.

One Direction was arguably been one of the biggest boy bands of the 2010s, seeing levels of success like the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC.

5 Seconds Of Summer

This Australian boy band used social media as a way to get their big break. Similar to solo singer Justin Bieber, 5 Seconds of Summer began posting their videos to YouTube in 2011 and building a fan base online.

In 2013, they were chosen to open for One Direction on their world tour and were signed to their own record contract in 2014.

K-pop was growing stronger than ever after the success of H.O.T. and today, one of the biggest K-pop boy bands in Exo. This nine-member group was unlike anything America had seen before. The performers for K-pop are trained from a young age in dancing, singing, and their public image.

Exo's music combines everything from pop, hip-hop, and electronica.

Today, the biggest boy band in the world is another K-pop creation—BTS. Also known as the Bangtan Boys, their seven-member group is the only K-pop group to have an album reach No. 1 on the U.S. charts.

Much of their success in America is thanks to their social media presence. Some of the members speak English which allows young fans to communicate directly with the group. There have even been viral videos of American fans crying with joy while watching BTS music videos.

Luke Hemmings Has 'Finally Found a Sound' with 'Melancholy' Second Solo Project, boy (Exclusive)

"I have a tendency to write pretty emotionally dark things, and I didn't want it to feel like a sad body of work," he tells PEOPLE of the 7-song EP

Luke Hemmings wasn’t sure if he could be a standalone artist.

After close to 15 years of touring and making music with 5 Seconds of Summer , the band’s lead singer released his first album of solo music following the pandemic, after finding himself at rest for the first time in essentially a decade. When Facing The Things We Turn Away From was an amalgamation of musings and feelings Hemmings, 27, had amassed during his years on the road with his bandmates, Calum Hood , Ashton Irwin and Michael Clifford . The 12-song album was the result of an “anomaly of a time,” he tells PEOPLE, his first chance to "reflect" after being "pretty much nonstop" since he was 15.

"A lot of those songs were written out of necessity of trying to understand my own psyche and how I got there and all those existential questions that you can face in a time like that," he says of the album.

Now, with his second solo endeavor, the 7-song EP boy , Hemmings is asserting himself as a standalone name that exists outside the bounds of his boyband — but he admits he wasn’t sure he was going to be able to do it a second time around.

“Coming into making these songs, I wasn't sure whether I could make something like the first album again on my own, or something I liked as much,” he says. “So I tentatively was writing stuff. I'm always writing stuff, but I was like, ‘All right, I'm going to try and see what comes out, see if I can find what this sound is I'm looking for,’ and taking things from the first album that I really loved.”

The EP started out of a desire to “expand” on When Facing The Things We Turn Away From , and capitalize on it, in a sense. Hemmings says he wanted to “see what else I could do, and see if it wasn't just a fluke of the times” the first time around. 

It’s a more sonically consistent project, and the Sydney, Australia native is breathing a sigh of relief. “Getting to the end of this process and having these songs done and loving them more than the first album, I feel really accomplished and fulfilled because of that.”

“I feel like I've found a sound, more of a sound of what it is,” he continues of boy . “That's always destined to grow and change, but I do feel like it has more of a straight to the point, 'this is what it is,’ sort of feeling to it. And that's really exciting because as you grow as an artist, that's kind of what you're trying to get to.”

“The songs are better, I think they sound better, and I think it feels more refined, but it's also scary because it's not just, ‘We were in COVID and I made these songs.’ It's more of an intentional like, ‘OK, I'm having a bit of a swing at it.’ ”

Hemmings was consciously taking a “swing” at the solo thing this time around, but the songs on boy still came about from a similar place.

"I was moving around a lot at the time, traveling, and I sort of felt a bit emotionally exhausted and a bit disorientated," he says of the period from late 2022 through 2023 when he began writing.

He was on tour with 5SOS, “there was lots going on," and ideas were floating around in his head that he just couldn’t shake.

“It was sort of always in the back of my mind of, ‘I really want to want to get this thing that I can see and hear in my head and I wanted to get it out,’ so I'd come back to it every, whatever it was, every couple months or so, and have these stints of writing periods and more intense periods, and then I would have a bit of space from it, which I actually found really, really lovely."

Compared to his first solo album, which came together in more of a vacuum, “there’s lots of life living in between the songs” on boy .

The space made for a slightly more “frustrating” process, but it helped Hemmings craft a body of work that actually captured the sentiment he was going for.

“I have a tendency to write pretty emotionally dark things, and I didn't want it to feel like a sad body of work,” he admits. “I wanted it to feel in the middle of those two things and feel a bit more how life feels, trying to sum up… I don't know, being human is so — from my experience, it's so up and down and my emotions are intense in both ways from day to day. So I wanted it to feel more melancholy and ride that line.”

Between his March 6 announcement of the EP and promoting it between then and release day, April 26, Hemmings has not shied away from how laden with emotions the tracks on boy are.

“I wrote these songs at a moment in my life when I found myself questioning everything I thought I knew about the world & myself. All the emotions, fears and grief that came with it,” he wrote on Instagram as he released the first single, “Shakes,” and announced boy .

Writing the songs was “emotionally draining,” he tells PEOPLE. “You don't really know exactly what you're writing about sometimes until it's done, which is interesting. So I think at the time, it's confusing. You have all these sort of existential thoughts bouncing around your head, but being able to make sense of them and put them into something that is artistically beautiful and makes sense to my brain definitely does take a bit of the weight off.”

Part of what weighed on Hemmings the most throughout the creation process was a deeper question: “Can I write songs on my own?”

He admits it’s a question that guided the origin of “the whole solo thing.”

“I think it honestly allows me to be Luke from 5SOS better, being able to do this. Because I think if not, I would be pulling too many of just my influences into the band, whereas it should be this shared...this thing we all contribute to and it comes out as this collective thing.”

The catalyst, he says, was “to try and get myself better as a songwriter and get things I want out and be able to tell my story.”

“I think I didn't really have time to figure out who I was outside of the band, personally, so this is just the way I work through things,” Hemmings continues. “It allows me to stand on my own two feet and understand myself so I can be in the band and go, ‘OK, I have an understanding of myself better.’ "
