These are the top ten companies to sail with if you’re interested in boozin’ and cruisin’ affordably.

1. Norwegian Cruise Lines

The “Ultimate Beverage Package” costs $79 per person, per day, and includes everything in the “Corks and Caps Package” plus liquor and cocktails (all drinks $15 or less). what-cruise-lines-have-all-inclusive-alcohol

Introduction

Embarking on a cruise vacation is a dream come true for many travelers. With the opportunity to explore incredible destinations, indulge in luxurious amenities, and enjoy top-notch entertainment, cruises offer a one-of-a-kind experience. A crucial aspect that many vacationers consider when choosing a cruise line is the availability of all-inclusive alcohol packages.

When we talk about all-inclusive alcohol on a cruise ship, it refers to the inclusion of alcoholic beverages in your cruise fare, allowing you to enjoy a wide range of drinks without worrying about additional charges. This convenience not only adds value to your cruise experience but also helps you budget and plan your vacation more effectively.

Having an all-inclusive alcohol package on a cruise has numerous benefits. Firstly, it eliminates the need to constantly track your drink expenses, making it easier for you to relax and enjoy your time on board. This also means that you can try a variety of cocktails, spirits, wines, and beers without hesitation, enhancing your overall cruise experience.

Moreover, all-inclusive alcohol packages often come with additional perks such as access to specialty bars and lounges, exclusive cocktail menus, and discounted prices on premium beverages. These packages also make it more convenient for groups or couples who can share the cost and enjoy the benefits together. It’s a great way to socialize, meet new people, and create lasting memories.

Now that we understand the significance of all-inclusive alcohol on a cruise, let’s explore which cruise lines offer this exceptional feature. From popular cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean to luxury options such as Celebrity and Princess Cruises, there are plenty of choices available to suit every type of traveler’s preferences and budget.

What Does “All-Inclusive Alcohol” Mean?

When we talk about “all-inclusive alcohol” on a cruise, it refers to the inclusion of alcoholic beverages in your cruise fare. Essentially, it means that you can enjoy a wide variety of drinks without incurring additional charges.

Typically, all-inclusive alcohol packages cover a range of beverages, including cocktails, spirits, wines, and beers. The specific offerings may vary depending on the cruise line and package you choose, but they often include popular brands and house pours. Some packages may also offer premium or top-shelf options at an additional cost.

All-inclusive alcohol packages are designed to provide convenience and value to cruisers. Instead of worrying about the cost of each drink, you can indulge in a wide selection of libations without any extra charges. This not only makes your vacation more relaxing but also allows you to try different drinks and flavors without hesitation.

It’s important to note that while all-inclusive alcohol packages cover most beverages, there may be a few exceptions. Some specialty or rare liquors, wines, or champagnes may not be included and may require an additional charge. The package also usually applies only to drinks consumed on board the ship and not during shore excursions or at private islands.

Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that all-inclusive alcohol packages are typically available to guests of legal drinking age. Policies may vary, but most cruise lines require passengers to be 21 years or older to purchase and consume alcohol on board.

Overall, all-inclusive alcohol packages provide a hassle-free and enjoyable experience for cruisers who wish to indulge in their favorite drinks throughout their vacation. Whether you’re sipping a refreshing cocktail by the pool, enjoying a glass of wine with dinner, or toasting to a memorable evening, all-inclusive alcohol adds an extra layer of relaxation and convenience to your cruise experience.

Benefits of All-Inclusive Alcohol Packages

Choosing a cruise with an all-inclusive alcohol package can offer numerous benefits that enhance your overall vacation experience. Here are some of the advantages:

  • Cost savings and budgeting: With an all-inclusive alcohol package, you can enjoy a wide range of drinks without worrying about the cost adding up. This helps you budget your vacation more effectively, as you can pre-pay for your beverages and have a clear understanding of your overall expenses.
  • Hassle-free enjoyment: Instead of constantly keeping track of your drink expenses, an all-inclusive alcohol package allows you to relax and fully enjoy your cruise. You can order drinks without hesitation, try new cocktails, and savor your favorite beverages without any additional charges.

Which Cruise Lines Include Alcohol? (Budget & Luxury Guide) – Drinks Lists

Cruises are often advertised as ‘all-inclusive’ but this all-inclusive fare rarely includes alcohol.

There are a number of cruise lines, however, that do. In this post, we will be looking at the cruise lines that include alcohol as standard in the cruise fare.

Many cruise lines do offer drinks packages that, when purchased in advance, can make the cruise fare closer to being all-inclusive.

The following all-inclusive cruise lines include alcohol:

Mainstream cruise lines.

There are VERY few cruise lines that I would consider budget/mainstream that include alcohol in the cruise fare.

Marella and Celestyal both do and I have cruised with both.

I have been on a few cruises with Marella and I have always been extremely impressed by the value for money they offer.

I would also recommend Celestyal Cruises for anybody wanting to explore the Greek Islands and try a line that offers a real Greek experience.

Marella Cruises Include Alcohol

Marella is a British cruise line, formerly known as Thomson. Their cruise fare is all-inclusive by standard and includes hundreds of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks.

Marella Discovery Cruise Families

What Alcohol is Included on Marella Cruises?

Marella Cruises include a variety of alcoholic drinks as standard on all of their cruises. Including but not limited to:

  • Draught Beers
  • Classic Cocktails
  • Frozen Cocktails
  • Aperitifs, Liqueurs, Ports and Sherries
  • Gins, Vodkas, Rums and Tequilas
  • Whiskies and Brandies

Soda, juices, and Mocktails are also included.

To see the full list of the drinks available on Marella cruises check out the post here:

Marella Cruises All Inclusive Drinks List

What Alcohol isn’t included?

When cruising with Marella it is possible to upgrade to a ‘premium’ beverage package. This costs in the region of £10 per day, and means you can have premium spirits, soda by the can (instead of fountain soda) and premium teas and coffees.

Drink packages on other cruise lines can cost over £90 per day – so £10 a day is an absolute bargain.

Celestyal Include Alcohol

Celestyal is a Greek cruise line that owns two ships, Celestyal Journey and Celestyal Discovery.

Celestyal cruises the Greek islands and often have more than one port stop per day.

I cruised with Celestyal on a 4-day cruise. We managed to visit 7 ports! I’ve never known a cruise line to do this before and it was amazing.

The ship I sailed on Celestyal Olympia, has now been scrapped but newer ships have been purchased.

Both their ships have previously sailed with other cruiselines before being refurbished and going into service with Celestyal.

What Alcohol is Included on Celestyal Cruises?

Celestyal Cruises includes a variety of drinks including the following:

To see the full list of the drinks available on Celestyal Cruises check out the post here:

Celestyal Cruises All Inclusive Drinks List.

It is worth noting that soft drinks and coffees/teas are included in the cruise fare.

On most cruise lines (including Marella mentioned above) you have to pay extra if you want to have a variety of teas or coffees. They are free on Celestyal Cruises.

On Celestyal cruises, you will find that most bars have two menus.

One includes included drinks and the other you have to pay extra for. During my cruise, I didn’t order anything from the premium menu and instead always chose the drinks that were included.

The paid-for extra menu features premium spirits and a greater variety of beers, wines, and cocktails.

Luxury Cruise Lines

If you have a little more budget to play with it is worth looking into the luxury cruise lines below.

Viking Cruises Include Alcohol

Viking ocean cruises.

Viking ocean cruises include beer, wine, and soft drinks with dinner but don’t include drinks at any other time of the day.

I took a 4-night cruise with Viking into the Arctic Circle in pursuit of the midnight sun.

It was one of the best experiences of my life, if you can afford to cruise with Viking I can’t recommend it enough.

Viking does also have a premium drinks package available for purchase.

Viking Sea Cruise Ship Geiranger

Azamara Cruises Include Alcohol

Cruises with Azamara include some beers, wines, and selected spirits. The drinks are available all day but are not available to order through room service.

There are two packages that you can upgrade to – a premium package and an unlimited package.

These packages allow you to have a much wider choice of drinks. I sailed with Azamara and didn’t spend a penny on drinks.

Azamara is a little more affordable than some of the other luxury lines mentioned in this article.

Find out all about my cruise with Azamara here:

Seabourn Cruises Include Alcohol

All alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks are included in Seabourn cruises.

There may be a charge for things like a particularly expensive/rare bottle of wine but generally speaking, you’ll probably come away from your Seabourn cruise without any charges for drinks.

Silversea Cruises Include Alcohol

Silversea cruises include LOADS of drinks. Wine, beer, even champagne. Some premium spirits, champagnes, and spirits do have an extra charge – but these are few and far between.

Regent Seven Seas Include Alcohol

Regent Seven Seas offers unlimited complimentary drinks. Wines, spirits, beers, and champagnes.

The mini bar is even restocked daily!

“All-Inclusive” Cruise Lines That Don’t Include Alcohol:

Virgin voyages.

Virgin Voyages frequently advertise their cruises as being ‘all-inclusive’ but there is no alcohol included in the cruise fare.

The cruise fares do include a lot – Wi-Fi, Gratuities, and some basic drinks.

Virgin Voyages do not offer drinks packages. Cruisers must “Pay as you go” when it comes to drinks – as you would in bars and pubs on land.

I took a short cruise with Virgin onboard Scarlet Lady, check out the video below to see what I thought:

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian cruise line often describes their cruises as ‘all-inclusive’ but the basic cruise fare doesn’t include any drinks.

Norwegian often has promotions that include things such as drinks and speciality dining which can bring the cruise product more in line with that of an ‘all-inclusive cruise line.

Norwegian Cruise Line does offer a variety of drink packages similar to most other mainstream lines.

I rarely buy the drinks package, for me it’s just not worth it. Find out why here:

Drinks Packages Aren’t Worth it For Me – Here’s How I Decide (Price Lists & More)

Find out about the cruise I took on one of Norwegian’s newest ships, Norwegian Prima here:

River Cruises

Generally speaking, river cruises will include, at a minimum, wine and beer with meals.

Some river cruise lines include wine and beer at all times of the day and some river cruise lines will have all alcohol included.

Generally speaking, river cruises are usually more expensive than ocean cruises but this is because of the size of the ship and the amount included in the cruise fare.

Find out about the great-value river cruise I took with Tui here. Drinks were included at meal times.

Royal Caribbean All You Can Drink Packages

CruiseMapper logo

This CruiseMapper article provides information and tips on Royal Caribbean International's/RCI's DELUXE BEVERAGE PACKAGE (all-you-can-drink package), ROYAL REFRESHMENT PACKAGE, SODA PACKAGE, WATER PACKAGE, and the COFFEE CARD - how much they cost, what is included, as well as FAQs and tips.

Note: Packages' pricing was last updated in 2023.

RCI has rolled fleetwide unlimited drink packages with alcohol included in these most special RCL all-inclusive cruise deals. For your convenience, next links jump down directly to unlimited drink packages ( NEW and OLD / for comparison), drink cards and packages review (are they worth it).

  • Unlimited alcohol packages are true without limits - no daily caps (how many drinks you can get). The only "limitation" is the soda fountain cups (that each package receives). Because refills are done at automated (self-serve) machines, the limit is once every 10-15 minutes. (to prevent abuse of the machines).
  • In all beverage packages gratuity (18%) is included. The receipt shows base package price plus "service charge" (covering the gratuities). Adding extra gratuity is always optional.
  • (NEW) Not everyone in the stateroom must purchase the drink package. Initially, there was a rule requiring every adult in the cabin to purchase the unlimited alcohol package.
  • Sharing drink packages is not allowed. If you get caught sharing, the package will most probably be canceled without a refund. Still, if you buy a bottle of wine, you are allowed to share it.
  • Buying drink packages on the first (embarkation) day are not mandatory. However, there must be at least 4 days left in the RCI cruise for the option to purchase drink packages later. This means on a 7-night itinerary you can buy a drink package on day 2 or 3 and pay only for the remaining days.
  • Currently, RCI's all-inclusive beverage packages are available only on itineraries 4-nights or longer. Their prices are inclusive of gratuities - don't pay more, unless you want to.
  • Currently, it is required packages to be purchased on 1st day (embarkation) and also by all adult guests in the same stateroom (21 years of age or older). This rule is presumably enacted to prevent the sharing of drinks.
  • The list of free drinks on Royal Caribbean cruises includes t ap water, milk, tea (and iced tea), coffee, lemonade, flavored waters, juices (bottled, at breakfast only), hot chocolate.

Since June 2018, RCI ship bars serve cocktails with optional plastic straws (not by default) - a new policy aiming to reduce sea pollution. "Why no straws?" signs at onboard bars fleetwide now indicate that drink orders will not automatically receive a straw, but only upon request.

Royal Caribbean All You Can Drink Packages

RCI's "all-you-can-drink" package concept

RCI's unlimited alcohol packages can be pre-purchased online (prior departure) via royalcaribbean.com (login, go to "My Cruises", find the link "Alcoholic Beverage Packages").

The testing of the new Royal Caribbean alcohol packages started with fleet's (world's) biggest ships Allure and Oasis, promoting the idea of paying one price for unlimited Bar drinks per day. Sometimes, RCI offers a complimentary Premium beverage package as a bonus for booking higher category staterooms (balcony and above) on Transatlantic repositioning cruises ( repositioncruises.com ). Know that these special offers don't apply to group bookings.

(NEW) Unlimited drink packages

In early September 2016, RCI rolled out new drink packages available fleetwide.

Deluxe Beverage Package

Due to varying prices fleetwide, the cost of the "Deluxe Beverage Package" varies between US$55-95 (in 2023 increased from $48-79) per person per day, gratuities are not included. If purchased on the ship, Deluxe Beverage Package costs more.

With the Deluxe package are offered unlimited alcohol (cocktails, liqueurs, beers, wines by the glass), also non-alcoholic drinks, premium coffees, and teas, bottled water (still and sparkling), fresh-squeezed juices, milkshakes at Johnny Rockets ( menu , only while dining there), Coca-Cola souvenir cup.

By purchasing the Deluxe Package, passengers are entitled to the following additional discounts: 40% off on wine bottles priced under US$100 per bottle, and 20% off on wine bottles priced above US$100. All package-included beverages can be priced up to US$12 per drink (US$13 on Oasis-class ships). For beverages priced over US$12 (13), a credit is applied towards the beverage for paying the balance.

  • Note 1: RCI's unlimited alcohol package covers individual drinks priced up to USD 12-13 (depending on the cruise ship). However, drinks priced above that threshold can also be ordered. The difference will be charged to your SeaPass account.
  • Note 2: By the RCI's unlimited alcohol package you can get drinks at any of the onboard specialty restaurants, as well as at any of the ship's bars. You can also order unlimited wine (served by the glass) at dinner in MDRs (main dining rooms) and in all specialty restaurants.
  • Note 3: As of 2018, Royal Caribbean UK doesn't offer Deluxe Beverage Package (with unlimited alcohol) on 2-night or 3-night itineraries. Unlimited drink packages are offered only on 4-nights or longer itineraries.

In 2018, the Deluxe Package price was fixed at US$57 pp pd.

Royal Refreshment Package

"Royal Refreshment Package" ("soda card") costs US$29 per person per day (gratuities not included).

RCI's "unlimited soda package" includes fountain sodas (including Coca-Cola drinks), non-alcoholic beverages-cocktails, bottled water (500 ml), sparkling water (375 ml), fresh-squeezed juices, premium coffee-tea, milkshakes at Johnny Rockets (only while dining there), Coca-Cola souvenir cup. The souvenir cup can be used (on select ships) at Coca-Cola Freestyle machines (touch-screen soda fountain).

Royal Caribbean defines as "premium" coffees cappuccino, espresso and latte. Espresso-based beverages are included in "Royal Refreshment" and available at any shipboard venue (restaurant, bar, cafe) serving espresso.

"Royal Refreshment" on non-Oasis class ships includes Illy or Starbucks drinks (available at Cafe Promenade and Cafe Latte-Tudes).

"Royal Refreshment" on Oasis-class ships doesn't include drinks from Starbucks kiosk, so premium coffees-teas are available only at Cafe Promenade and Park Cafe.

Unlike the Deluxe Package, "Royal Refreshment" doesn't require the other passengers in the cabin to buy it too.

In 2018, the Refreshment Package cost US$26.

Classic Soda Package

"Classic Soda Package" costs US$13 per person per day (gratuities not included). It is inclusive of unlimited fountain sodas and free Coca-Cola souvenir cup.

In 2018, the Soda Package was priced US$8,50.

Evian Bottled Water Package

"Evian Bottled Water Package" has 2 available options (prices PP, gratuity not included): US$39 (12x 1L bottles of "Evian Natural Spring Water") and US$69 (24x 1L "Evian Natural Spring Water").

Royal Caribbean unlimited beverage packages tips

Since September 6, 2016, all these new packages are available for booking via "Cruise Planner" (at https://www.royalcaribbean.com/cruiseplanner).

Pre-purchased (already booked) older packages were honored as follows: "Select Package" (until depleted), "Premium Package" (upgraded to "Deluxe" for free), "Ultimate Package" (converted to "Deluxe") and "Replenish Package" (converted to "Refreshment").

In September 2016, RCI announced explicitly that Starbucks beverages are not part of the line's drink packages that include specialty coffee. Starbucks drinks are available (for purchasing) at the licensed Starbucks kiosks on board.

Keep in mind, that these packages are priced daily. This means on 7-night itineraries, you get charged 7 times (package's daily rate plus tips). This also means passengers can use the package on both embarkation and disembarkation days.

Drink package discounts are offered if they are purchased before the voyage (via Cruise Planner). Purchasing it online saves money.

Currently, RCI requires all passengers booked in the same stateroom to buy the Deluxe (unlimited alcohol) package. This change was announced in October 2017 and implemented for all cruise bookings for 2018 and beyond. The company's official statement says, quote, "each adult of legal drinking age assigned to the same stateroom must purchase this package". The only exclusions to this rule are pregnant women, recovering alcoholics, and adults who don't consume alcohol due to personal preference, medical or religious reasons. IMPORTANT: This rule is for the "Deluxe Beverage Package" only and doesn't apply to other packages.

Sharing drinks on any unlimited drink package is prohibited.

"Deluxe" (unlimited alcohol) package tips

Buy it online. It will save you time as the onboard purchase (on embarkation day only) means long lines some paperwork. It will save you money as discounts are offered for purchasing the package prior to the voyage. The price will be guaranteed as it is possible to increase. If the price drops before the voyage, you can always cancel the purchase and rebook the package - without penalty.

Remember that the Deluxe package also includes unlimited bottled water. You can stockpile the bottles in your cabin and using the water on shore tours. With any alcoholic drink order, you can ask for bottled water as part of the same order.

Remember, that when you order an alcoholic drink, you are allowed to specify the liquor - among several (higher quality) liquor brands.

Most RCI specialty restaurants have their own wines and cocktails menus created specifically for that restaurant - and often not available elsewhere onboard. Since the Deluxe (unlimited drink) package works at all restaurants, you can order drinks from their cocktail and wine menus too. Among those restaurants are Sabor Mexican, Jamie's Italian, 150 Central Park, Wonderland.

Don't share the package with other passengers. You risk your drink package benefits to be revoked (without refund).

RCI adds 18% gratuity ("service fee") listed in the drink order's breakdown. With the Deluxe package, all these gratuities are already paid, so you have no obligation to provide additional tips.

Remember that you can use the unlimited alcohol packages at both Royal Caribbean private island destinations - Coco Cay Bahamas and Labadee Haiti . To order drinks there, all you need is to show your SeaPass card to the staff.

Souvenir cups are not included with any of the RCI's drink packages.

The Deluxe Package also includes premium teas and coffees (espresso, cappuccino, latte, etc).

You have also the option to buy the Deluxe package onboard at any point in the voyage - as long as there are 4 or more days left in it.

The only place on the cruise ship where the unlimited drink package can't be used is your stateroom. It doesn't include room service or any of the minibar beverages. Still, it is allowed to bring bar-ordered drinks back to your cabin.

(NEW) Bottled alcohol packages

Since March 2017, RCI offers two new bottled alcohol packages as cabin delivery options. Both are available for online prepurchasing (prior to the cruise). The online Royal Gifts shop added the new packages offering 1 bottle of liquor combined with canned Coca-Cola drinks.

The "Absolut Vodka & Sprite Package" costs USD 38 and includes one bottle of Absolut Vodka (375 ml) combined with four Sprite cans.

The "Johnnie Walker & Coca-Cola Package" costs USD 45 and includes one bottle Johnnie Walker Red Label Whiskey (375 ml) combined with four Coca-Cola cans.

The "Bacardi Gold & Coca-Cola Package" costs USD 40 and includes one bottle of Bacardi Gold Rum (375 ml) combined with four Coca-Cola cans.

The "Bombay Sapphire & Tonic Package" costs USD 43 and includes one bottle Bombay Sapphire Gin (375 ml) combined with four Tonic water cans.

Note: Either of these alcohol packages can be purchased online (prior to the cruise) and are delivered to your stateroom upon embarkation.

Note: As of March 2017, the above, bottled alcohol packages are not available on the following RCI ships - Explorer, Mariner, Ovation, Quantum, Radiance, Splendour, Vision, and Voyager.

(NEW) Combined VOOM Internet and drinks packages

At the end of May 2017, RCI added a new Internet and soda combo package available for purchasing online. The combo package's both inclusions are unlimited - soft drinks and the internet.

  • The package is named "Classic Soda And VOOM One Device".
  • The unlimited soda+Internet package costs USD 19 per person per day.
  • The soda+Internet package can be pre-purchased online (prior to the voyage) via RCI's "Cruise Planner".
  • The combo is cheaper when compared to the separately priced unlimited drinks (USD 8,50) plus unlimited VOOM (USD 14,39), or combined price USD 22,89 pp per day.

The other RCI combo package is named "Deluxe Beverage Package and VOOM One Device". It combines unlimited alcohol package with unlimited Internet package. This unlimited alcohol+Internet package costs USD 54 per person per day.

Note: These packages are more like promotions than regularly offered cruise package deals. It is advisable to book them once spotted as they may disappear quickly. Don't forget that all RCI online purchases (via Cruise Planner) can be canceled prior to the voyage's start.

(NEW) Combined drinks and dining package

In August 2017, RCI introduced a new package that combines "Deluxe Beverage Package" with " Ultimate Dining Package ". The combo offer includes:

  • unlimited drinks (coffee, bottled water, sodas, juices, spirits, beer and wine by the glass)
  • 40% discount on bottles of wine (priced under USD 100) with specialty restaurants dining
  • 20% discount on bottles of wine (priced above USD 100) with specialty restaurants dining
  • specialty restaurants dinners (every night)
  • specialty restaurants lunches (on sea days)
  • USD 50 bonus (added as onboard credit) for a la carte priced restaurants dining
  • The "Deluxe Beverage and Ultimate Dining" package cost is USD 71 pp (adult) per day.
  • Note: For now, the food+drinks package is offered only on Oasis-class ships.

(OLD) Royal Caribbean drink packages (unlimited beverages)

RCI offers new drink package deals on all cruises. Compared to the old one, by the "beverage package policy," if only one of all roommates wants to purchase an unlimited package, he/she can and without forcing the other adults in the cabin to buy it too.

The four new beverage packages prices range from USD 20 to USD 65 pp per day. These are daily drink plans designed to better budget onboard spending and save money. All these plans provide unlimited drinks that can be ordered at any ship bar or restaurant on any RCI ship, plus at the company's private island resorts. The only exceptions where beverage packages can't be used are cabin's mini-bars and room service.

Packages are available via SeaPass cards or WOWbands, through which any of the serving staff (waiters and bartenders) can verify the package. Drink plans can be purchased either prior departure (via Cruise Planner) or on the ship. Once purchased, passengers pay for the full duration of the cruise. If purchased on board, passengers pay for the remaining days of the cruise.

Royal Replenish Package

The cheapest one is "Royal Replenish Package" (cost USD 22,42 pp, pricing inclusive of gratuity) - all non-alcoholic beverages, coffee is included. As items, this package includes Coca-Cola Souvenir Cup, fountain soda, non-alcoholic drinks, bottled water (volume 500 ml), sparkling water (volume 375 ml), fresh-squeezed juices, Premium coffees/teas.

Select Package

"Select Package" (cost USD 42 pp, pricing inclusive of gratuity) - included are unlimited beer, wine by the glass, non-alcoholic cocktails, Fountain Soda, Coca-Cola Souvenir Cup, juices, plus 20% discount pricing on bottled wines.

Premium Package

"Premium Package" (cost USD 57 pp, pricing inclusive of gratuity) - included are unlimited wines by the glass, beer, premium cocktails (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), Fountain Soda, Coca-Cola Souvenir Cup, juices, bottled water (volume 500 ml), plus 20% discount pricing on bottled wines.

Ultimate Package

"Ultimate Package" (cost USD 67 pp, pricing inclusive of gratuity) - included are unlimited alcohol and beverages - fine wines by the glass, beer, premium cocktails (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), Fountain Soda, Coca-Cola Souvenir Cup, juices, bottled water (volume 500 ml), sparkling water (volume 375 ml), plus 20% discount pricing on (bottled wines under $100) and 40% discount (on bottled wines above $100).

RCI beverage packages tips and tricks

  • Souvenir cups (alcoholic beverages, not Coca-Cola cups) are not included in any of the packages. They cost extra ($10) with an alcoholic drink.
  • Don't forget - these are prices PP, for each day of your RCI vacation, must be purchased for the whole cruise duration. Know, that occasionally (on select sailings), RCI offers drink package discounted pricing. Almost all such discount deals are offered prior to sailing and via Cruise Planner.
  • Occasionally, Royal Caribbean offers pre-cruise discount pricing on some beverage packages purchased online (pre-cruise) via "Cruise Planner". These are promo sales which tend to occur once every few weeks, so be sure to check the website (https://www.royalcaribbean.com/cruiseplanner) for updates.
  • If you've already pre-purchased beverage packages, you are also entitled to take advantage of price drops (better discount) later. Just cancel the online purchase and then re-purchase the package under the promotion.

Royal Caribbean drink cards

Drink cards on RCI ships were introduced in 2015, as an alternative to the company's beverage packages. Beverage cards are available for purchasing only on the ship. The purchase can be made at almost any lounge or bar. Each card (named "10 Drinks Savings Card") must be paid in full and can be immediately used it at any onboard bar, lounge or restaurant. For each ordered drink, to indicate it was used, the waiter (bartender) marks off one of the listed on the card bottom numbers.

  • RCI's drink cards cover much of the regular beverage package inclusions - most beers, wine (by the glass), cocktails (including with alcohol), fountain sodas, specialty coffees/teas, fresh-squeezed juices.
  • Gratuities are included. Not included are cabin minibar items, also canned and bottled beverages (soda, juices), souvenir glasses, premium beers, and other high-priced beverages.
  • Drink card's price varies by ship and itineraries, ranging between USD 70 and 90 per card. Its cost is charged to the passenger's SeaPass account (WOWband). Drink cards are non-refundable.
  • Strangely, there is no certain way to know when these cards will be available on the current cruise. They tend to become available on different days, including on the last (debarkation) day only. Each liner has the option to offer different drink package or card deals, so it's not sure if drink cards will be available on a particular voyage, or when and at what cost per card.
  • The main difference between Royal Caribbean's drink card and any beverage package is that unlike the packages, cards are shareable.
  • Are the RCI's drink cards worth it? If you take the USD 90 (highest priced) drink card, it will cost you USD 9 per drink (tips included). Currently, most cocktails on RCI ships cost between USD 10-12 (prices not inclusive of gratuity).

Coffee cards (coffee package)

The "Cafe Select Coffee Card" (punch card is for 15x specialty coffees (premium brand espresso-based beverages) and is shareable. The barista punches one hole in the card per drink ordered. With the "coffee package" you buy 15x coffees at half price (50% discount). Its value is for the current voyage only.

The Cafe Select Coffee Card doesn't include the Starbucks kiosks. Starbucks coffee cards are available for purchase on select ships, and for use at "Starbucks at Sea" locations only.

The coffee card for 15x Starbucks beverages is also shareable. Both cards cost US$ 31 (US$ 36.58 with gratuity) or US$ 6.20 per drink. For comparison, individually purchased premium coffees cost between US$ 2.50-5 per drink.

On RCI ships without dedicated Starbucks kiosks (all excepting Oasis-class), the unlimited drink packages "Royal Replenish" and "Ultimate" (all-inclusive) can be used for paying Starbucks beverages. These ships serve Starbucks beverages at "Cafe Promenade" (bar lounge/fka Latte-tudes). Quantum-class ships serve Starbucks drinks at the "La Patisserie" bar.

Notes: Since September 2016, Starbucks beverages are not included in drink packages inclusive of specialty coffees but are available only at the licensed onboard Starbucks kiosks. Through RCI's loyalty program, high-status members (Diamond, Diamond Plus, Pinnacle Club) receive complimentary daily drink vouchers that can be also used for premium brand coffees.

RCI Water Package

Royal Caribbean passengers can purchase bottled water sets in 8, 12, 16 and 24 bottles. Evian brand water comes with Sports Cap - each bottle is one liter. Evian Water Package will cost you from $28.45 per day per person. Right after you purchase a water package, water will be delivered on the requested date to your stateroom. Water packages include set bottles' numbers, unlike other drink packages. These are not available for unlimited bottles packages. If you purchase a water package you'll be offered a discount compared to onboard buying water individually. Royal Caribbean promised savings up to 35%, depending on the purchased water bottle quantity.

RCI Soda Package

Royal Caribbean soda packages provide guests with unlimited refills - take advantage of any of the lounges and bars on board as well as the private islands and Main Dining Rooms. Guests also receive a Coca-Cola cup souvenir with the package. The fountain soda package's cost is determined by your cruise length. The average daily cost is $4.50 for kids, $6.50 for adults, plus gratuity. Soda packages allow passengers to use Coca-Cola Freestyle Machines onboard select ships. After you purchase a soda package, you'll have an icon placed on the SeaPass card, indicating to the ship staff that you've purchased the package.

RCI Juice Packages

Royal Caribbean offers Minute Maid brand unlimited juice packages in varieties of quantities and flavors for those who want healthy drinks. You may buy at a time 6, 8 or 12 bottles, 15 ounces each. Royal Caribbean juice package costs from $20.15 per day per person. Available are the following flavors: Ruby red grapefruit juice, Apple juice, orange juice, variety Pack (divided equally among the three above choices). When ordered online, Juice Packages are placed in guest's stateroom on the requested date, and when purchased onboard - delivered within 24 hours. RCCL promised savings up to 25%, depending on the purchased water bottle quantity.

Royal Caribbean alcohol packages reviews

(our top-best RCCL unlimited drinks program reviews choices)

  • "I can't drink enough to make such a package financially viable"
  • "We bought a package and definitely didn't break even. Plus it is really expensive, I think paying by the drink is better".
  • "it's the wine that is very expensive on RC - prices by the glass start from 8 euros plus tips for a Californian chardonnay" ( RCI wine list prices )
  • "I like the idea of all-inclusiveness, and I'm lucky to be able to afford it"
  • "LOL My name is X and I am an alcoholic"
  • "on a classic 7-day itinerary, that's an extra $315/$385 PP - yes, it's a decent price for my specially themed Royal Caribbean "booze package cruise" :)".
  • "Personally, I think offering all-inclusive alcohol packages encourage lots of drinking (more drunks), which is good for profit and bad for health. Anyone spending this much on booze feels obligated to drink more than what they would normally consume.
  • "The package benefits only those who drink a lot, but it's also good to keep a lid on your drinking expenses. You set your drinking budget ahead in time - I mean when you're sober, which is very practical".
  • "It's an affordable way to stay pretty inebriated for the cruise".

Review - are Royal Caribbean cruise drink packages worth It?

These packages do save money (compared to buying a la carte priced drinks), but the amount of savings depends on how much you intend to drink daily. However, there is this drink package phenomenon where you start drinking more than you normally would.

  • Short cruises present a better option to really enjoy the package's benefits. Also, shorter itineraries (3-4-5- days) tend to offer a more party-like atmosphere compared to longer ones.
  • Spending more onboard time by the swimming pool is another reason to consider purchasing a beverage plan.
  • RCI's drink package drinks provide the convenience to enjoy unlimited drinks with budgeting (paying) in advance, without worrying about their cost (no receipts, additional tipping), the opportunity to try new cocktails without the fear of "wrong choices".
  • On all RCI ships are offered daily drink specials (promotions called "drink of the day") with discounted pricing about 20% off.
  • Crown and Anchor Society members (loyalty program) are eligible to discount-priced and complimentary beverages during the voyage. Diamond and above members get free lounge drinks in the evenings (5 - 8:30 pm) during the so-called " Diamond Happy Hour ". Drinks include vodka, rum, tequila, gin, whiskey, port wine, vermouth, liqueurs, beers, soda, bottled water (500 ml).
  • Also, according to RCI's beverage policy, passengers are allowed to bring on the ship up to 2 wine bottles per cabin.
  • Royal Caribbean's discounts on drink packages (while onboard) are for loyalty program members only. Discounted prices (as a percentage) are 20% off (Diamond status), 30% off (Diamond Plus status), 40% off (Pinnacle status). However, these percentages may vary.
  • Remember, that you can buy a beverage package even after the cruise starts - with a minimum of 4 days until the end of it.

Note: All table prices are in USD, and suggestive (rounded to a dollar). The above comparison is based on the RCI's "Premium" beverage package (cost US$55 PP per day).

ALCOHOL INCLUDED CRUISE LINES

14 cruise lines where alcohol is included.

Alcohol included cruise lines

ALCOHOL INCLUDED ON YOUR CRUISE

Do you also enjoy sitting on the deck with a glass of wine or a summer cocktail? Or to drink a nice wine with the super dinner on board your cruise?

Then it is so handy when you know that the final invoice is not such a shock and that your drinks are already included in the rate.

With most cruise lines, you pay a fairly high price for those alcoholic beverages, often with a hefty tip as well.

But luckily for us ‘connoisseurs’ there are also cruise lines where alcohol is included in the fare. Here’s an overview:

BEVERAGE PACKAGES

If you order a beverage package in advance, this can be to €55 per day per passenger with individual drinks at restaurant prices where $9 are no exception.

If you don’t want to be bothered every time to pull your ticket and be shocked by the final bill, a cruise where alcohol is included in the price is very convenient.

I have made a list with the cruise lines (in alphabetical order) that offer alcohol included with your cruise and where you do not have to order an extra package. These cruises can of course seem more expensive, but a quick calculation makes it clear that it can be quite expensive.

1 - AmaWaterways

The river cruise company AmaWaterways offers you a selection of complimentary local wines and beers during lunch and dinner on itineraries across the rivers of Europe, Africa and Vietnam and Cambodia. For true hedonists, European routes also offer sparkling wine for breakfast. How about a delicious mimosa? Outside meals you pay à la carte, and for special wine and premium alcoholic drinks a surcharge may be charged.

2 - Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara offers the all-inclusive rate where international beers, plus a selection of wines and standard spirits are included in your Azamara cruise. Is is a wide menu of beers and wines and cocktails for you to choose from. In addition, there are premium packages for sale with even more beautiful premium spirits and wines. Cruise drink packages: your options by cruise line.

Discover what's included and excluded, to decide what pick is right for you.

Cruise Drink Packages

Explore cruise offerings for cocktails, wine, beer, soda and more.

Cruise drink packages can provide incredible value for people who plan to regularly imbibe on their voyage and want the convenience of an unlimited open bar package – whereas they may not be a good deal for light drinkers. Other options include alcohol-free drink packages, which let cruisers indulge in soft drinks, hot chocolate, specialty coffees and a range of other nonalcoholic beverages.

Whether or not to get the drink package is a question all cruisers face, and there's no perfect answer for everyone. Read on to learn about the drink packages offered by the major cruise lines and what each beverage package includes.

Expert tip: The price of each beverage package will vary from sailing to sailing and may change at any time. Also note that cruise drink packages are almost always nontransferable and nonrefundable, and that everyone in your cabin needs to buy a package. If kids are cruising with adults who purchase an alcoholic drink package, a nonalcoholic package must be purchased for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drink packages can be worth it on a cruise if you consume enough beverages to justify the cost of a package. If a drink package you're considering costs $85 per day, for example, you can try to estimate whether you would drink enough alcoholic drinks, specialty coffees and sodas to add up to or exceed this cost.

If you're a light drinker, these packages may not be a good deal for you at all.

Because drink packages are frequently discounted before a cruise, it makes sense to buy one pre-departure if you can. Also note that some cruise lines only offer drink packages on the day of embarkation and stop offering them for the rest of the cruise.

Cruise drink packages can never be shared. With all the major cruise lines, each guest in your cabin must purchase a package.

posted by Charmaine Cortes on December 26, 2022 // last updated on June 12, 2023

All-Inclusive cruises are an excellent option for families looking to relax and enjoy their time together without worrying about extra costs or planning activities. With everything included in one price, all-inclusive cruises take the stress out of vacation planning and allow you to focus on making memories with your loved ones.

There are plenty of all-inclusive cruise lines, from beachfront resorts to luxury cruises. Many packages include meals (if specialty dining is your flavor, then specialty restaurants are also available on some liners), drinks, activities, and entertainment, so you can enjoy your holiday without worrying about additional expenses.

With a wide range of destinations to choose from, you’re sure to find an offer that fits your family’s needs and interests.

Do You Need a Passport When Going on a Cruise?

Yes, It’s a good practice to bring your passport when traveling by cruise ship. However, they are itineraries that let you take part in the cruise without it.

What makes a cruise all-inclusive?

The all-inclusive fare covers non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, specialty dining, onboard activities, use of water sports equipment, select shore excursions, and gratuities.

Some packages also include round-trip airfare from major cities and pre-cruise hotel accommodations.

What is a guaranteed cabin?

If you choose a guaranteed cabin when booking a cruise, you will be assigned a room in your selected category. However, you will have little say in which specific room you get within that category.

While there is a chance that you may be upgraded to a higher-quality cabin if there are any available, there is also a risk that you may end up with a less desirable room. Some people have reported being “upgraded” to a cabin worse than the one they originally booked.

Will I get seasick?

You won’t notice much rocking when the weather is excellent and the waves are calm, especially on big, modern ships.

If you frequently get motion sickness, research seasickness prevention before going on your next holiday at sea.

Will I feel claustrophobic?

Only the tiniest oceangoing vessels cause us to feel cramped. Ships, fortunately, come in a variety of sizes. You could forget you’re out on the sea because some are as big as shopping malls and can easily hold thousands of people.

Booking a stateroom with a porthole or balcony is advised if you anticipate feeling anxious.

NCL drink packages: Should you take Norwegian Cruise Line’s free drinks offer?

Norwegian Cruise Line_Facebook_People enjoying drinks_2

For many cruisers, stepping aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship means it's time to let loose and have at least a few drinks each day of vacation. But those beers and cocktails can add up quickly if you're not paying attention.

Like many cruise lines, NCL takes the cost anxiety away by allowing passengers to pre-purchase beverage packages ahead of their cruise. This means that the per-day price has already been set, and passengers can order as many drinks as they want without worrying about their bills adding up.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Here, we go over what's included in the various NCL drink packages, how much they cost and whether they're worth the price depending on your drinking habits.

What's included in Norwegian Cruise Line's drink packages?

cruise all inclusive alcohol

Before we go over which drinks are included in Norwegian Cruise Line's beverage packages, you should first know which options are included in the cruise fare. Lemonade, iced tea, a limited selection of juices, chocolate and regular milk, tap water and standard coffee and tea are free of charge. You can get these complimentary beverages in onboard restaurants (including the buffet) and in some bars and lounges.

Alcohol, soda, specialty coffees and drinks and other premium beverages cost extra. Norwegian Cruise Line offers four drink packages that let passengers pay a flat daily fee and get an unlimited amount of the included beverages.

Related: The ultimate guide to cruise ship food and dining

Here is what each NCL drink package includes:

Unlimited Soda Package

This package includes unlimited fountain soda throughout the cruise. Norwegian Cruise Line serves Coca-Cola products, so expect to find Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Fanta. Ginger ale, tonic water and soda water are also included in this package. Soda packages are available to guests 3 years old and up.

Unlimited Starbucks Package

Norwegian's Starbucks package includes coffee and tea from Starbucks, as well as specialty beverages, Frappuccinos and Refreshers by the cup sold at the branded outlets on board select ships. Canned and bottled drinks, food and Starbucks merchandise are not included. To purchase the package, guests must be at least 18 years old. If one person purchases the package, all qualifying guests under the same method of payment for the cruise must also purchase it.

Unlimited Open Bar Package

The Unlimited Open Bar Package is the standard Norwegian drink package that includes alcohol. It covers cocktails and spirits priced under $15, beer and wine by the glass up to $15, a selection of premium juices and unlimited soda. It also gives guests 20% off all bottles of wine and Champagne. Passengers must be at least 21 years old to purchase this package. If one person purchases it, all other 21+ guests on the same reservation must buy it as well. Guests under 21 must purchase the soda package.

Premium Plus Beverage Package

cruise all inclusive alcohol

If the Unlimited Open Bar does not cover your favorite drinks, Norwegian Cruise Line offers the Premium Plus beverage package. The line's most inclusive alcohol package covers everything the Unlimited Open Bar package includes, plus top-shelf cocktails and spirits; all beer, red wine, white wine and NCL's exclusive rose by the glass; unlimited still and sparkling bottled water; all Starbucks coffee and specialty drinks; energy drinks; and select premium bottles of wine and NCL's rose with dinner. The package also includes 40% off all other bottles of wine and Champagne.

The same rules apply for this package as they do for the Unlimited Open Bar package; all guests must be 21+ to purchase, and if one guest purchases the package, all other passengers on the same reservation must purchase it as well — with those under 21 required to buy the soda package.

Note: All of Norwegian Cruise Line's beverage packages extend to its private island in the Bahamas, Great Stirrup Cay. They do not include room service or the in-stateroom minibar.

How much do Norwegian's drink packages cost?

Norwegian Cruise Line's beverage packages are priced by the day but must be purchased for the duration of the sailing, either online before your sailing or on embarkation day. Unfortunately, you can't pick and choose the days you want the package; it's all or nothing. Here's the breakdown:

  • Unlimited Soda Package: $9.95 per person, per day
  • Unlimited Starbucks Package: $12.95 per person, per day
  • Unlimited Open Bar Package: $109 per person, per day
  • Premium Plus Beverage Package: $138 per person, per day

A 20% gratuity and beverage service charge is added to all packages at checkout.

What about NCL's Free at Sea program?

cruise all inclusive alcohol

Unless you're booking a guarantee cabin (where you pay less to let NCL pick your specific cabin in your selected category), chances are your cruise booking comes with included Free at Sea perks . One of the inclusions is the Unlimited Open Bar package.

If you choose to keep the package as a perk (you can decline any perks you don't want), you will get a free beverage package — sort of. You won't have to pay the drink package's daily fee, but you will have to pay the package's automatic 20% gratuity charge ($21.80 per person, per day, at current prices).

This means that almost no one pays the $109 per day for the Unlimited Open Bar package. Even those who might have considered booking a guarantee cabin will likely choose to pay a bit for their room if they would have purchased any extras included in Free at Sea.

The bottom line is this: Most people who sail on NCL and plan to drink alcohol or other specialty beverages are going to end up with the Unlimited Open Bar package through Free at Sea.

Related: 8 best drinks to order with a cruise ship beverage package (and 3 to avoid)

But what if you want top-shelf liquor and wines, Starbucks beverages or bottled water? Those are all included in the Premium Plus Beverage package, but not the Unlimited Open Bar package.

It turns out most people don't pay the full price for the Premium Plus package either. Instead, they take advantage of the Free at Sea Plus upgrade option. For $49 per person, per day, the standard Free at Sea package can be upgraded to include the Premium Plus Beverage Package. The extra money gets you additional upgrades as well, including more specialty dining meals, more shore excursion credit and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Is there a limit on how many drinks you can have per day on Norwegian Cruise Line?

Unlike some other cruise brands, Norwegian Cruise Line does not put a daily limit on the number of alcoholic drinks you can order when you have a drink package. Bartenders, however, are trained not to serve passengers who appear visibly intoxicated and have the right to cut anyone off who has over-indulged.

Still, don't try to order five drinks at once. To prevent people from sneaking drinks to friends who don't have the package or ordering more than they can drink, Norwegian puts a limit of two beverages per person, per transaction, for anyone signed up for its drink package. Guests with the Starbucks package are entitled to just one beverage per person, per transaction.

Are Norwegian Cruise Line's drink packages worth it?

cruise all inclusive alcohol

To help determine if Norwegian Cruise Line's alcoholic beverage packages are worth the cost, we must first get an idea of what drinks cost. For beer, you can expect to pay around $7 a glass, while most glasses of wine range from $8 to $20. You'll find that most cocktails using non-premium spirits cost $11 to $13, and soda costs $3 to $3.50. Most specialty coffees at Starbucks are at least $5, and a large carton of water (NCL doesn't sell plastic bottled water) is $6.50.

With this being said, if $10 to $12 is the average cost you'll pay for a cocktail or glass of wine on board, you'd need to drink at least 10-11 drinks per day to break even on the Unlimited Open Bar package at face value ($109).

However, as mentioned above, most guests aren't going to be paying face value for Unlimited Open Bar. Keeping this perk as part of Free at Sea means you're only paying $22 in gratuities each day — to break even you'd need just two cocktails or one cocktail and three or four sodas.

If you plan to drink any alcohol beyond just one or two per day, keeping the Unlimited Open Bar as one of your Free at Sea perks is well worth it. However, remember that all guests in the same cabin must choose the same perks. If you and your partner are sailing but only one of you will be drinking beverages that aren't included in the cruise fare, your daily drink spend would have to top $44 per day (four or so cocktails) on average to be worth keeping the drinks package as one of your Free at Sea perks.

Related: Are cruise line drinks packages worth the price? What to know before you buy

You'll have similar considerations when assessing the value of the Premium Plus Beverage Package. Unless you plan on drinking lots of Starbucks or want all of your libations to include top-shelf liquor, the Premium Plus package isn't worth it at face value. However, the $49 extra per day for Free at Sea Plus — especially with its other upgrades — could easily be worth it depending on your preferences.

Our recommendation for the vast majority of guests is to keep Unlimited Open Bar as one of the Free at Sea perks and only upgrade to Free at Sea Plus if you see the value for you and your travel mates in all of the extras that come with it.

Now let's talk about the soda and Starbucks packages. If you're under 21 but sailing with someone who's 21+ that's getting the Unlimited Open Bar or Premium Plus beverage package as part of Free at Sea, you're going to automatically receive the soda package as part of your cruise fare, so there's not much to decide.

Otherwise, do the math. If you love soda, don't drink alcohol and aren't interested in zero-proof cocktails, you might want to decline the Free at Sea drinks package offer and get the soda package instead; at $12, including the mandatory gratuities, it's about half the cost. To break even with the soda package, you'd need to drink four sodas (at $3 to $3.50 each) per day.

With the Starbucks package, you'll come out even if you drink two to three specialty coffees per day. If you only plan on having one, the package won't be worth it at $15 per day including gratuities.

Bottom line

For most guests, Norwegian Cruise Line's standard alcohol package is well worth it through the Free at Sea program. The Premium Plus upgrade and the Starbucks and soda packages can also bring value, depending on the preferences and budget of you and your travel party. Do the math on how much you're likely to drink throughout the cruise, then determine from there if paying the daily amount for a Norwegian drink package makes sense for you.

All-inclusive resort or cruise – which is best?

“Club Tropicana, drinks are free… Fun and sunshine, there’s enough for everyone,” so sang George Michael in Wham!’s famous 1980s paean to the nascent all-inclusive. In the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, ‘free’ booze and no bill sounded and looked – if you were anywhere near a pool in Ibiza with George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley – like holiday utopia.

Drinks weren’t really free, but the idea that you could pay up-front to eat and imbibe, and be assured that you wouldn’t be presented with a terrifying bill at the end, was a novel concept, particularly for budget-conscious families and sun-seeking partygoers.

It still offers considerable appeal in our cash-strapped times, which may explain why all-inclusives have had something of a renaissance. Cruising offers similar peace of mind and plenty to do with kids clubs, waterslides and Disney princesses on board – though alcohol isn’t always free. During both types of holiday, the entertainment comes to you and you’ll never have to flinch at the prices on the menu.

But which type of holiday is best? Our writer put them both to the test.

All-inclusive

Club Med founders Gilbert Trigano and Gérard Blitz, who dreamt up the all-inclusive concept in the 1950s, had beaches and sunshine in mind. But skiers also favoured the all-in pricing model. Europe’s slopes were a win-win for the brand, which opened its first Alpine village at Leysin in Switzerland in 1956 ( clubmed.co.uk ).

Traditional sunshine strongholds Mexico and the Caribbean – where Butch Stewart picked up the mantel with his Sandals brand – still account for a big slice of the all-inclusive pie, but the net has spread further to include Cuba, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Montenegro, Cape Verde and the Azores. Further afield there are all-inclusive resorts in Kenya, Thailand (mostly Phuket) and the Maldives and Mauritius. Turkish-owned Rixos ( rixos.com ) has recently opened resorts in Qatar and Doha, while Tui ( tui.co.uk ) and First Choice ( firstchoice.co.uk ) offer several resorts in Costa Rica.

Cruise

An average week or 10-day ocean cruise can tick-off several different destinations in one country, or across several countries in one trip. If you have a bit longer, it can take you round the world. Three-month world cruise itineraries cross continents, sail several seas and oceans, visit scores of capital cities and offer hundreds of excursion opportunities.

And let’s not forget off-grid but accessible by water destinations such as the Galapagos, the Pitcairn Islands and Antarctica. River cruises follow the course of most navigable rivers, from the Amazon to the Zambezi. The Mekong, the Mississippi and the Ganges are among their more adventurous destinations.

Whether beach or mountain-based, most all-inclusive resorts feature an activities element. Sandals comes up trumps, with free scuba at its Caribbean dive resorts and multiple rounds of golf and green fees at top courses in Jamaica, St Lucia and the Bahamas.

Meanwhile, guests at Rixos resorts in Turkey have free daily access to The Land of the Legends Theme Park in Antalya – which means big savings in peak periods. This Easter, there are also egg hunts as well as giant egg-painting: a week at Premium Tekirova costs from £2,390 for four adults and two children, departing on March 30.

Watersports not your bag? Ikos Oceania in Halkidiki can provide a Tesla Model 3 at no extra cost for one day’s exploration as well as a culture pass to local museums. At Ikos resorts ( ikosresorts.com ), spa access is free between 8am to 8pm.

If you’re after more than a typical beach holiday, check the activities part of a hotel website to find out what’s included. The adults-only Sanctuary Cap Cana ( sanctuarycapcana.com ) in the Dominican Republic offers Spanish classes and, at the House of Aia on Mexico’s Riviera Maya ( thehouseofaia.com ), a ‘personal growth’ programme includes 20 classes, ceremonies and rituals from visiting guides.

If you have adventurous teens in tow, the US offers some interesting options. At the historic Castle Hot Springs in Arizona ( castlehotsprings.com ) there’s axe-throwing, cruiser bikes, geothermal hot springs and creekside hammocks for lazing in, while, further north in scenic Wyoming, Scott Dunn has stays at Brush Creek Ranch, set in 30,000 acres of sage-bush prairie where you can ride, fish or take to the landscape by ATV ( scottdunn.com ).

With distractions ranging from rock-climbing walls and ropes courses to simulated surfing, via encounters with Star Wars, Marvel and Disney Pixar characters, cruising sets a high bar for activities. And on land, there are excursions – sometimes included – for every type of passenger.

It’s not just families who benefit. Swan Hellenic ( swanhellenic.com ) has teamed up with Deepak Chopra to offer wellbeing voyages, while adult-only ships offer films under the stars or in theatres, lectures from wildlife experts and historians, opportunities for citizen science, celebrity speakers, casinos and activities ranging from dance lessons to art and photography classes. Virgin ( virginvoyages.com ) also puts on DJ sets and pool and dance parties. And let’s not forget the main event – a new place to explore every day.

Newer resorts have really lifted the bar. At its properties along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast, Rixos rolls out the red carpet for families with a Rixy Kids Club that has cooking and pottery lessons as well as football and dance academies. At Rixos Sungate, where the kids’ club is set around a splash park in a forest, children can learn to code using Lego robotics.

At Ikos Resorts’ collection of luxury properties in Spain and Greece, kids’ clubs are run in line with UK Ofsted standards. Meanwhile, Tui’s family-friendly resorts come with kids’ clubs and a seven-day line-up of activities including creative sessions. Mini Club Med offers trapeze lessons, introductory water-skiing, horse-riding, cooking classes, games and nature discovery activities. For older kids (11-17), there’s film design, DJ sessions and dedicated areas in which to hang out.

If you’re travelling with very small children or have ambitious activities in mind, check the small print: like lots of childcare for babies and toddlers, Petit Club Med and Baby Club Med both cost extra. Motorised water sports often incur a fee at all-inclusives while some resorts impose limits on the number of windsurfing or other tutored lessons.

Cruise ships do a stellar job when it comes to children’s clubs, with all ages well catered for. Most resort ships divide clubs into four age groups and some, including P&O Cruises ( pocruises.com ), offer free babysitting. Royal Caribbean ( royalcaribbean.com ) has an adventure science lab for budding junior scientists as well as baby and tots programmes for those aged six to 36 months. Celebrity Cruises has a STEM at Sea partnership with The Frost Science Museum (Equinox and Edge-class ships; celebritycruises.com ).

P&O Cruises is particularly well set up for those with kids in tow, with round-the-clock children’s clubs on its family-friendly ships and family-oriented shore excursions. MSC Cruises ( msccruises.co.uk ) has baby, mini, junior, young and teen clubs. The latter offers Xbox and PS4 tournaments, a Drone Academy, flash mobs and dance offs. Disney Dream ( disneycruise.disney.go.com ) has some imaginative offerings too, including the Jedi Training Academy and the opportunity to hang out with characters from the Toy Story trilogy.

You get what you pay for. If that’s sun and sea and a good four-star family resort, expect two or three bars and a standard buffet: a week at the Iberostar Bellevue in Montenegro costs £1,562 in mid-May ( iberostar.com ). Pay a bit more and you’ll be rewarded with more imaginative menus. At Ikos Porto Petro in Majorca, five à la carte restaurants serve meals inspired by Michelin-starred chefs (from £2,470pp with Sovereign; sovereign.com ).

Ikos also has curated “dine out” programmes that encourage guests to eat at local restaurants – including a rustic tapas joint in Estepona, an agriturismo in Ibiza and a buzzy beachfront spot in Marbella. Sandals ( sandals.co.uk ) has similar in Curaçao and Nassau. Caribbean all-inclusives generally offer three or four restaurants – and maybe a pop-up beach venue or barbecue night.

Think cruise, think buffet, right? Wrong. Standards are high, with new ships offering a plethora of cuisines, dining styles and venues along with healthy options and dietary alternatives. You’re as likely to find vegan muffins and bee-pollen at the breakfast buffet as a Full English.

Silversea and Virgin have ditched the buffet altogether. Partnerships with chefs including Marco Pierre White and Eric Lanlard (P&O Cruises), Relais & Chateau (Silversea; silversea.com ), Jacques Pepin (Holland America Line; hollandamerica.com ) and Thomas Keller (Seabourn; seabourn.com ) have also made a difference. Crystal ( crystalcruises.com ) has a Japanese restaurant masterminded by Nobu while wine presenter Olly Smith helms the Glasshouse on some P&O ships.

Silversea, Holland America Line and Oceania ( oceaniacruises.com ) are highly regarded among foodies and Regent Seven Seas ( rssc.com ) offers some stylish settings while Celebrity’s newer ships have roof-top gardens and over-the-sea dining. Fine dining can cost extra, depending on the ship, but expect to pay around £15 on top for three courses, which might just include one of the finest steaks you’ll ever eat.

All-inclusive

It’s a broad-brush summation but for something established, refined and ‘old-school’ romantic – think castaway beaches, palm fronds gently buffeted by warm trade winds, knock-out views and honeymoon havens – the Caribbean is a safe bet. The likes of Jumby Bay ( oetkercollection.com ), Spice Island Resort ( spiceislandbeachresort.com ), Necker ( virginlimitededition.com ) and Curtain Bluff ( curtainbluff.com ) are famous for a reason.

The Maldives attracts a discerning international clientele while, in Europe, there are affordable package resorts where screaming kids are well tolerated. At the stylish new kids on the block (think Ikos and Grecotel Luxme; grecotel.com ), Poppy and Miles only scream in the privacy of the rooms however.

Skiers are too busy skiing, too knackered or too busy partying to care about trifles like the vibe. If in doubt opt for Club Med, where most people speak French.

It varies enormously across ships. River ships are tranquil, geared to sightseeing and generally follow an up-early and early-to-bed routine. Large resort ships can feel like theme parks, with entertainment into the wee hours; smaller ships go out of their way to leave passengers alone and provide impressive libraries and spaces for quiet contemplation. Viking ( vikingcruises.co.uk ), Silversea and Seabourn excel at this. Then there are the tall ships such as Sea Cloud ( seacloud.com ) and those in the Star Clipper fleet ( starclippercruises.co.uk ), where you’ll spend most of your time on deck watching the wind make the sails dance.

Some liners take a ship-within-a-ship approach, with exclusive areas, pools and services – at a cost. MSC has the Yacht Club while Norwegian Cruise Line ( ncl.com ), Royal Caribbean and P&O have premium areas with pools and separate menus. Cunard ( cunard.com ) has the Grills Suites.

If you’re after a more intimate, house-party atmosphere (complete with Surrey types, ex-boat owners and ‘non-cruisers’), opt for a yacht-style cruise ship from Ponant ( uk.ponant.com ), SeaDream ( seadream.com ), Scenic Eclipse ( scenic.co.uk ) or one of a handful of Windstar ships ( windstarcruises.com ).

Hidden costs All-inclusive

Do question the headline price, especially if booking via a third party. In January 2024, a Which? survey of 2,000 holidaymakers revealed key omissions from some operators, including soft drinks. Those who booked with the cheapest provider, lastminute.com , were forking out an extra £367 per week on average for extras.

Operators take different approaches to inclusions. BA Holidays says: “Expect your holiday to include flights and accommodation, all three meals and snacks in between. Drinks are included too but expect house wine and local spirits unless otherwise stated.” EasyJet’s small print states: “What’s included in the all-inclusive package varies vastly between hotels. When booking your holiday be sure to look at the board description.”

Premium restaurants often cost more, but at the Oaks IBN Battuta in Dubai for example (where a week costs from £989pp through loveholidays.com ) the price includes à la carte restaurants and in-room breakfast. In all cases the two-clicks-away small print was clear. Read it. If in doubt, use the chat function, talk to a travel agent or pick up the phone.

All cruises include accommodation, dining, entertainment and access to pools and the other fun facilities, but Wi-Fi, drinks – alcohol and soda – and tips and room service might not be included. Tips are automatically added to cruise bills on a per passenger, per day basis. Expect to pay for service on spa and beauty treatments and bar drinks.

If you plan on drinking every day, pay for a drinks package (there are alcohol-free packages, too). Celebrity Cruises alcoholic drinks packages start at around £55 per day and Cunard’s soft drinks package starts from around £8.50 per day. Princess Cruises’ Wi-Fi, tips and drinks bundle costs £50pp per day ( princess.com ).

Though you’ll still pay extra to tip for beauty services, some truly all-inclusive lines also include Wi-Fi, limitless premium drinks, a free mini-bar, most service fees and some excursions. Some also include airfares and a pre- or post-cruise hotel night. Take a look at Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Viking, Crystal and Seabourn.

Which wins?

The all-inclusive concept has evolved – there’s no room for holiday snobbery in 2024. If all you want is a hassle-free place to relax by a pool or on the beach and forget about daily expenses, this is as good as it gets. But if you intend to stay longer than a week or haven’t been to the destination before, do some research. You may tire of the same sand, sun loungers and restaurants while venturing out to drink and dine makes little financial sense.

If you’ve a thirst for new places, a cruise offers all of the above plus the bonus of a new port of call most days – without the need to unpack. You’ll never get bored of the changing views and, as for feeling claustrophobic, you can disembark every day (though you don’t have to). Plenty of ships overnight in port, so you can dine ashore too.

Cruises score bonus points for once-in-a-lifetime experiences too. Unless you own a boat, how else do you experience the romance of a dawn arrival in Manhattan, a sunset sail out of Sydney or your first glimpse of porpoising penguins in the Galapagos?
