River Rafting Reviews and Red River Adventure Testimonials!

Mark Popelka

John, an IFMGA Certified Mountain Guide led a backcountry tour for me today. It was a full on mountain adventure with extreme weather. My kind of day in the mountains. John is the epitome of what a guide should be. He is extremely personable, patient, fit, and a master of his profession. A Guide full of experience and knowledge. I learned an incredible amount of information today on mountain travel and avalanche related topics. He took the time to explain and ensure I understood the topics. He also shared tips and techniques that made my experience a 10 out of 10. I plan to hire John in the future. You can’t go wrong asking for John. He’s amazing!

mark gregg

Carl is a consummate professional backcountry ski guide. I always learn a ton and have fun in the process. I'll be back!

Anna Rust

Honestly one of the best classes I’ve take, Jake and Vic are both through educators and great guides. If you’re looking to take a AIARE course these guys are great! I left feeling more prepared to deal with avalanche problems and identifying risks in the backcountry.

Steve Sherwood

I had a great time with John at Red River Adventures doing a ski tour yesterday. We skied around Cardiff Fork in the Wasatch, he’s a tremendous guide, such attention to detail, I’ve gone on nearly a dozen trips with him. He and Carl at Red River make a dynamic team. They do rock climbing, skiing, alpine climbing, river guiding, you name it they do it. Keep it up folks!

Susan Sims

Victoria was fun and was able to adapt for what suited our time for the day. Appreciated the rescue sled tips.

George Diver

Jake and Ben were professional, informative and extremely helpful. Would recommend to anyone who feels apprehensive about taking an avalanche safety course.

Mike Martula

Amazing experience with Sam on my first back country experience

Liam Doyle

Jake and Garth were both excellent instructors, and just a blast to hang out with for a weekend. It is super obvious they both care a ton about providing an impactful educational experience - but they also made the entire weekend very fun. Highly recommend.

Lukasz Sewera

Great experience during our rescue course.

Derek Wang

It was a blast. Brain was really skilled and thoughtful.

Candice Bithell

Spent a day ice climbing with Red River. Excellent instruction, fun guide (ask for Brian!), all in all a great time. Will go again for sure! Thanks Red River!

Lawler Kang

Out of random coincidence, Sam had led me up a trail last year and strongly suggested I take this course, which was AWESOME! The experience and passion she and Jake bring to getting humans back safely and stoked is unparalleled. And the resources they walk you through and make available are profound. Can’t recommend Red River and these two strongly enough. If you’re serious about backcountry, this is an absolute must. I also really liked the small class size. Made a big difference. Looking forward to practicing my beacon finding at the resort.

Jonas Clem

Great day with Jake at Provo Canyon. Very skilled guides that go above and beyond. Highly recommend….

Ryan Kelly

Alex was an awesome instructor. We had a great day going over all of the different avalanche rescue techniques.

Anthony Torma

Amazing guides who are knowledgeable and charismatic. Took an AIARE 1 class through them and it was an amazing time. I learned so much!

Mark Sims

Amazing experience with John and Garth in our Avi 1 class. They were great teachers and I feel confident in the skills I acquired through their instruction.

David Johnson

Sam was a fantastic guide and instructor. Very skilled at building our skills in the backcountry!

Daniel Mills-Thysen

John, Jeremy, and Garth are all awesome and taught a great course in a beautiful area. If you are taking AIRIE 1 and don't have skis/board or beacon/probe/shovel they will help you out and loan you what you need for the course!

Rochelle Erskine

Sam delivered an awesome rescue course!

christy mallak

I went on August 31st, Leaky was our guide. He was awesome and was very pleased with our white water rafting. Thanks so much

Richard Cox

We did the full day with lunch and was extremely pleased! Our guide was outstanding, the trip was great and the food was delicious. Highly recommended.

Kyle Drenckhahn

No need to waste time reading this review when you could already be on their website signing up, but I suppose it's your time to waste, so here's the deal. A couple weeks ago, my friend suggested we go rafting in Moab together. She had previously done a trip with Red River Adventures a while back and loved it, so it seemed like a safe bet for my inaugural float. Simple sign up, fair prices, and knowledgeable guides. Pretty much a no-brainer. It totally held up. We had a blast with our guide, the absolutely incredible Molly. Her witty humor and kindness were only matched by her knowledge of the area and of the river itself. Between the named rapids, of which she had complete and utter control over, she kept the group entertained with fun little facts about the local geography, wildlife, and surrounding community. It was an even better experience than I had hoped for. One and only one complaint: On our way back to our vehicles after the trip, Molly gave our group some recommendations for restaurants in the area, including burgers at Milt's. It sounded like the perfect place for my friend and I to grab a quick bite on our way out of town since we were running short on time, so we stopped by. They were "temporarily closed." Molly, burgers are on you next time I see ya. ;)

Roland Ducomble

We had a great day of rafting. Very well organized. Thanks to our guide Kira, she very professional and entertaining. Lunch was very good thanks to Leaky. Overall a perfect day.

Sam Mckellar

Best rafting trip we've been on, and certainly not our first. Highly recommend

Liu Qian

Definitely a Great day on the River. Leaky kept us entertained the whole journey and there can be some swimming. We did the full day which lasts much longer on the River and had a free lunch.

Elizabeth S

Had an awesome time rock climbing in Moab with Red River Adventures. Our guide, Ryan, was super cool and also professional and had safety as his #1 importance the whole time. Great temperatures and we were in the shade the whole time (did this approx 7:30am-12pm). Would definitely come again!

Michael Myers

I had a blast!

Gummi Bear

We enjoyed the rafting very much. We had a great time, and I especially enjoyed the swimming on the side of the boat portion. I loved the trip and highly recommend it.

James Wojcik

Very relaxing and fun float. Class 1 and 2 rapids were obviously pretty easy but Molly, our guide, was great and the view was spectacular.

Jacob Nizri

Great experience!!!

Austin Adams

We had the best morning on the water with Red River! We did the half day rafting trip on the Colorado through the canyon. The scenery was amazing, our guide Ryan (and all the guides) was great, we had lots of time for swimming, and it was a great intro into whitewater for my younger son. Top notch organization!

Dustin Farris

It was a lot of fun. I was not to sure what to expect but it was the best part of our trip. I would do the full day (I think its called 1/2 day). The information said it would be a bbq lunch but it was better than that. The lunch they provided was my favorite meal of our entire trip. Ryan was our guide and he did great and made it interesting and fun. 19/10 stars

MK

We loved our experience at Red River Adventures! The guides were great - funny and provided lots of interesting facts along the way! Our kids age 12,10, 7 loved their first time white water rafting! Breathtaking views.

Megan Kremser

My two kids (9 and 11 years old) did the full day white water rafting and morning Bow and Arrow canyoneering adventures. We had an awesome time and they are already to visit Moab again!

Mckenna Evans

Very fun! The ride is a tad shorter than anticipated. I would go for the full day trip. Lots of chances to swim and generally goof around.

Kristin Mathew

Dan was an amazing guide! Very down to earth and made us feel safe and comfortable at every step of the way.

Erika Anderson

Had a great time!

Alison Scott

Red River adventures did a great job with our large group of adults and teenagers! We’d definitely go with them again! And if you can, make sure you get Brendan as your guide, he’s the best!

Ava Cox

My husband and I had a great time! Our guide, Kinsley, was amazing! She explained everything and make us feel safe and comfortable. The hike wasn't too strenuous and the views were spectacular! I'll definitely want to do this again next time we're in Moab.

Emily Hatch

Awesome trip. The guides were so friendly and fun and also focused on safety. The lunch was incredible (chickpea curry!) and in addition to the gorgeous canyon red rock scenery we saw river otters and mountain goats. The length of the full trip was perfect and we wish we could do it again tomorrow.

Brooke Casselberry

It was a great day on the river!

Suzette Henschell

Shout out to Ryan who did a fantastic job leading our morning white water adventure. We had a great time. Highly recommend. Thanks again Ryan!

Amy Miller

My husband and I decided to do the full day white water rafting trip at the end of June. The experience was fun and enjoyable. The entire team was kind, friendly and really seemed to care about everyone having a good experience. Things were very well organized but the highlight for us was our guide Olivia. She was awesome. She was very nice, funny and extremely knowledgeable of the area and the environment. Great experience and I would recommend this company and if you are lucky to have her, Olivia, as your guide.

Bruce T

Competent guides, incredible scenery- just an awesome experience all around. The full guided trip seems like a bargain in retrospect. Our guide was Jonas and he did a hell of a job navigating us through some gnarly class 2-3 rapids during highwater (15-20k cfs).

Cyndi Diaz

This was so amazing!! We loved the experience. Perfect for a family and you just can’t beat the scenery 🙌🏻

bert ballet

We had a great trip! Mackenzie was a great guide, she was very pleasant and we felt very safe with her!

Riley Heaton

Canyoneering was great! Ryan was the best. 2nd most handsome guide... I think... I didn't meet the other guides. But fr, he's pretty great

lauren cooper

We had an amazing time on our first climb of the trip. We climbed at the Ice Cream Parlor with Kenzie, who was super cool and amazing. She was able to answer all of our questions about the area and provided a very positive experience for us

Chase Koory

Ryan w/ Red River was a phenomenal guide on the Fishers Tower rafting trip! He led us thru the best rapids and shared some great stories. Red River provided a great lunch! Overall great experience

Alex Winn

We had Adam as our guide for the rock of ages canyoneering trip. We had an excellent time! He really knew his stuff and we all had so much fun! Definitely recommend for anyone who wants to get into canyoneering but hasn’t tried it yet.

What People Say About Us ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

float trips utah

Lars was our guide, great ride down the Weber. The location is easy to find and not far from Park City. They are very organized and spend enough time going over safety precautions though the river was relatively calm the day we went

This was our third year in a row with Destination Sports and our third amazing river trip. The river was high this year and we got some fun rapids too.The whole family loved it and our guide taught us about the rare wildlife and and natural features too. I finally got to see a Bald Eagle!

I went on a 2.5 hour rafting trip with my 13 yo daughter with Destination Sports. Our guide Lars was attentive throughout taking the time to meet everyone on the raft and learn a bit about each of us. She was not only a very experienced and adept guide but also filled us in on some of the local history pointing out landmarks and opportunities to see wildlife as well. This trip was an A+ and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Destination Sports, we met the owner, Dawna, and she was friendly and kind. She introduced us to our guide, Mark. Mark was great - he was patient, knowledgeable and fun! He made my mom’s first rafting experience memorable, safe and fun. It was her first rafting trip and she had a blast. Thank you Mark and Dawna!

My two children joined Destination Sports doe their week long day camp. They had so much fun and D.S. had many activities for them to do, fishing, hiking, kayaking, whitewater rafting and more. My kids are already asking if they can go back next year.

Find a Guide

River adventures require a commitment. Multi-day trips call for sleeping and eating outdoors, a very relaxed dress code and a tolerance for temperatures — ice-cold water and sun-baked heat. Many of the difficulties of planning can be alleviated by taking a guided river tour.

There are many excellent  guides and outfitters  available in Utah for your river experience. They include professional river guides, many of whom are also accomplished chefs prepared to make delightful meals, especially on multi-day trips. A guided river trip ensures that all safety precautions have been taken and all necessary equipment for a safe, enjoyable trip is included. (Read: "The Perks of Going with a Guide" ).

Northern Utah

Henefer to taggart falls | weber river.

From  Salt Lake City , you could be floating on the Weber River near  Ogden  in just an hour drive. Known by locals as the Weeb, it's not like a rafting trip on the mighty Colorado or Green Rivers, but it's definitely fun. The 5-mile float through Weber Canyon starts on a meandering and brief flat water stretch of river before the first riffles appear. Rock Garden, a class II+ rapid and navigation challenge, appears shortly after. This section gets really big during high water, and some big holes form on river right. Following Rock Garden, the entertainment continues with a nice mix of rapids and flat water stretches, which provide time to take in beautiful views of the surrounding Wasatch Mountains. Three noteworthy features along this run include a snug pass beneath the Croydon Bridge, Devil's Slide, an unusual geologic rock formation consisting of two parallel bands of limestone running down a steep mountainside, and Slalom Rapid, which passes a series of concrete pillars supporting the freeway above. The run concludes with its biggest rapid, Taggart Falls, a class III- rapid, which can become a little beast during high water.

There are several guides and outfitters who offer daily trips on the Weber River throughout the summer season.

Dinosaur National Monument | Green River

The Green and Yampa rivers carve out great adventure in the area near  Flaming Gorge  and  Dinosaur National Monument.  This area offers incredible scenery, great basecamp towns (such as  Vernal ) and a wide range of rapid classes for all abilities. Popular stretches include following the Green River through Dinosaur National Monument from the Canyon of Lodore to Split Mountain Gorge. The Green and its largest tributary, the Yampa River, meet at Steamboat Rock in Echo Park. The Yampa River offers great adventure during run-off season in the spring. (Watch: " Guided Rafting Through the Gates of Lodore .")

Central Eastern Utah

The green river daily | green river.

This 9-mile section of the Green River begins at Nefertiti Access Point, flows through Gray Canyon, and concludes at Swaseys Boat Ramp. Fantastic desert, canyon country scenery surrounds the entire float.  Green River State Park  makes a great base camp.  Learn more

The Moab Daily | Colorado River

Utah's most popular river trip, the Moab Daily, is a 13-mile stretch of the Colorado River from Hittle Bottom to Takeout Beach along Highway 128.  Learn more

Fisher Towers | Colorado River

This float is a great family adventure and good for first-time passengers and last-minute schedules. This can be a half-day or full-day trip on the Colorado River. Many trips include rides in small inflatable kayaks. Several major movies have been shot along this section of river.

The Little Grand Canyon | San Rafael River

This 17 mile float through the "Little Grand Canyon" of the  San Rafael Swell  is sublime (Read:  The Undiscovered Swell ). Ideal for canoes, or inflatable or hardshell kayaks, it's primarily a flat-water float through towering canyon walls and cozy cottonwood groves. Being quite narrow, very serpentine, and with surprisingly fast water, it does require paddlers to be on their toes with regard to navigation. A few miles from the put-in at Fuller Bottom, watch out for an old barbed-wire fence that juts several feet over the river from the right bank. It's easy to avoid by staying river left. Ideal flows for this run are 150 cfs and above. The inviting scenery and solitude of this special place make it a great choice for planning a night beneath the dazzling star-filled Utah skies. Along the journey, be aware that there are a number of hiking trails and keep your eyes open for petroglyphs and pictographs found throughout the area. This float is an oft overlooked and/or unknown gem, and could be just what the doctor ordered.

The take-out is at the San Rafael Bridge. Do NOT continue down the river past the San Rafael Bridge as the water becomes increasingly swift, unpredictable and dangerous (class III-V). It's important to remember that on most years, there is a short window of opportunity to run the San Rafael, and on some years, none at all. As a general rule of thumb, the best time to consider a float on the San Rafael River is late May through early June. Check the current  flow conditions

While this section of the San Rafael River presents no major hazards of significance to competent boaters, ALL river boating is inherently dangerous. There are no outfitters or guides and services available for the San Rafael River, so be prepared with your own shuttles and everything you need. Anyone considering this run should absolutely consult guidebooks and outfitters for complete information.

Desolation and Gray Canyons | Green River

This section of the Green River features several Native American ruins and historical sites, including abandoned ranches, one a hangout for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It’s a great family trip with long sections of calm water. But it also holds 60 class I to III rapids (with VI being too high to run.)  Learn more

Westwater Canyon | Colorado River

This is a popular one or two day trip that beings at the ranger station and ends at Cisco Takeout, roughly 17 miles of rapids that includes several Class IV rapids. It's a great ride at any water level. Not recommended for children under 12. Travelers can tailor their trips to their time tables. Great hikes, petroglyphs, caves and history along the way

Southeastern Utah

Cataract canyon | colorado river.

The Colorado and Green rivers have played a significant role in shaping the landscape of Canyonlands, and seeing the park from the bottom up affords a unique perspective. Above their confluence near the heart of Canyonlands, the rivers offer miles and miles of flat water perfect for canoes, sea kayaks and other shallow-water boats. Below the confluence, the combined flow of both rivers spills down Cataract Canyon with remarkable speed and power, creating a fourteen-mile stretch of Class III to V white water.  Learn more

Sand Island to Mexican Hat | San Juan River

Head out on the San Juan River’s 26-mile stretch from  Sand Island near Bluff  to  Mexican Hat  for such watery bliss. You can hire a guide service, like Wild Rivers Expeditions, or get a permit and head out on your own in a canoe or kayak. Either way, make sure you see all of the wonderful sites as you make your way downstream. This complete section of river can be run as a single day or multi-day trip at an easier pace. This river is one of the few places in the world where a long string of large rolling sand waves appear and then disappear. It is considered one of the most exciting rivers but draws few passengers. The river feeds into Lake Powell and has several class II and III rapids.  Learn more

Float the Green River through Labyrinth Canyon

Green River, Utah

Description

Added by Devin K

This is an awesome float trip for any beginner. The views are outstanding and there are multiple hikes to arches and historic sites to explore.

This trip goes 45 miles between Ruby Ranch and Mineral Bottom on the Green River in Utah north of Canyonlands National Park.  Labyrinth Canyon is known for it's massive beautiful walls and oasis landscape surrounding the river. This entire section of water is flat water and can be done with no technical experience.

The two most important details of this trip are shuttles and permits.  First, call the multiple shuttle companies in Moab to arrange a shuttle or arrange to have multiple cars to shuttle yourselves (the latter option would add hours to your trip).  Choose the shuttle that works best for your budget and group.  Some of the shuttles provide boats as well.  We opted to have our car shuttled from the put-in to take-out by a company while we were on the river.  I highly recommend this option because it is economical and saves the most time.  If you are planning to go on a busy weekend, make sure to call Ruby Ranch and let them know wha date you will be putting in.  Ruby Ranch is a private ranch that charges $10 a boat for people to put in on the river there. Second, permits can be obtained from any BLM or river guide service free of charge.  There is no maximum number of permits issued, so no need to stress.

I highly recommend getting the guide book,  Canyonlands River Guide.   The guide book contains detailed descriptions of the river as well as camping spots (which can be hard to find) and highlights along the way.

If you are coming from the east on I-70, take off on Exit 175 and turn left on Old Highway Elgin.  This road turns into Ruby Ranch Road.  Follow the signs through BLM land all the way to the closed gate that says no trespassing.  This is the gate you will go through to get to the river put-in (don't be confused).  The BLM land before this point has tons of dispersed camping.

Try to put-in as early as possible.  Depending on how high the river is, this trip could take 2 days or up to 4 days.  When we went the river was flowing high and we could have floated it in almost 1 day.  Once you're on the river, the trip is up to you.  There are far too many options to describe here. Along the way there are cliff to jump, areas to explore, sites to see and fun to be had.  The take-out at Mineral Bottom will be obvious with a vault toilet and large boat ramp.  Another sign you are at the end of your journey is passing what is called the Bowtie.  Just remember to not go past the take-out because it can be hard to figure out a shuttle to get back and after Mineral Bottom you are in Canyonlands Nation Park, which requires a different permit.

The best part of this trip is enjoying your time floating down a river in a pristine wilderness.  Make sure to take your time and truly take it all in.

Remember to leave no trace and pack out everything.

Great 3 Day Trip!

We just got back from this float trip and it was amazing! We had a group of 11 with 8 boats: 2 canoes, and 6 kayaks. It was perfect. Plenty of amazing views, and we were able to do some side exploring. Don't miss the hike up to the saddle at Bowknot bend, the views are breathtaking! The trip does take some coordination (we did our own shuttle), and when the wind is high paddling can be difficult. Totally worth it!

Another option is our 4-day Green River raft trip that covers 44 miles of Class III-IV rapids through the legendary Gates of Lodore. Both trips begin in Colorado and end in Utah through Split Mountain Canyon. Dinosaur National Monument is a spectacular park without the crowds. The rivers all carry a wilderness designation, which means space is limited. The controlled numbers not only help protect the resource and river corridor but also allow you to really feel like you have escaped. With Fremont, Ute and other native peoples rock art, caves where outlaws like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid hid from the authorities, dinosaur bones in situ at the quarry, a geological tapestry that rivals the Grand Canyon and world class white water on two of the largest tributaries of the Colorado River…this may be one of the raddest places in the continental USA. Join us for an intimate whitewater adventure of a lifetime, that is suitable for beginner and intermediate river enthusiasts alike!

UTAH: Birthplace of River Rafting

Before rubber rafts, when wooden hulls were shaped for straight lines across lakes, not rivers, a man named Powell dared to explore the last unmapped and unknown rivers and canyons of the west. That placed him squarely in Utah, in 1869. They were successful, proving that "running rivers" could be done in the deepest canyons, and wildest water in North America.

It took another 50 years before Bus Hatch and his family near Vernal, Utah began taking boats - and then boat-loads of friends - down the Green River, just for the heck of it. Norm Nevills in Mexican Hat, Utah gave his horse trough a float down the San Juan River on his honeymoon... and started one of the first commercial operations after designing his own wooden boats. By the 1960's surplus army rubber pontoons changed the industry forever, the rest is even more history. Utah truly is the birthplace of the modern river running industry.

Learn more about the history of river running in the John Wesley Powell River History Museum, located in Green River, Utah.

Frequently Asked Questions about Moab River Rafting Tours

Our daily stretch on the Colorado River includes both class I and class II rapids throughout the season. However, during early season while we experience higher water levels due to snow melt, guests may get to experience one or two class III rapids during their tour.

We recommend wearing quick-dry clothing and shoes that can not only get wet but will stay securely on your feet. Hats and/or sunglasses are also highly recommended.

Everything that you take with you must go on the raft and therefore has a chance of getting wet. We recommend leaving dry clothes, towels, and any other items you do not want getting wet behind. You can check valuables such as cell phones, wallets, and keys with our front desk staff while checking in for your tour. If you wish to bring a camera or cell phone with you, we recommend purchasing a waterproof case that will protect your device. Paddle along the edge of Bears Ears National Monument through a dramatic red rock labyrinth, hike up nearby canyons, and discover remnants of ancient civilizations on this laid-back rafting trip.

Rafting the San Juan River in southeastern Utah offers the ultimate outdoor family vacation with easy paddling and hiking. The river is a place of surreal beauty and vibrancy, hundreds of millions of years in the making. A calm, congenial stretch, rafting the San Juan combines a relaxing float trip livened up by fun Class II rapids. Kids and adults love the terrific hiking opportunities and the warm water. A bottomless archeological treasure chest, this area encases numerous remnants of ancient civilizations. Lined with vivid pictographs and petroglyphs, Ancestral Puebloan ruins, and Moki Steps–carved into near-vertical sandstone over 800 years ago–the San Juan is an enormous natural museum locked within a labyrinth of dramatic red rock canyons. Twisting and turning through one of the most convoluted canyons in the Colorado Plateau, the Goosenecks of the San Juan zigzag over seven miles in an airline distance of just two miles. End your day relaxing in warm pools and beach camping under the desert stars.

Trip Highlights

  • Easy floating on calm water & gentle rapids
  • Impressive Native American cliff dwellings & well-preserved rock art
  • Raft the extraordinary zigzagging Goosenecks of the San Juan
  • Warm water that’s perfect for swimming & water fights
  • Pristine camps, beach games & delicious meals

What to Expect

Itinerary & Map

Itinerary at a glance.

We pride ourselves in running a relaxed and flexible schedule. Every San Juan River rafting trip is different depending upon the group, other trips on the water, camp locations, and sometimes the weather. The following is a sample of what your trip might be like:

The Day Before Your Trip

We’ll meet this evening for a pre-trip meeting in Bluff, Utah. This is an opportunity to meet your fellow travelers and guides, and ask any last-minute questions. Your guides will give you a thorough trip orientation and pass out your waterproof river bags so you can pack your belongings that evening.

Our trip begins with a 4-mile drive from Bluff to our put-in at Sand Island, where your boats and your OARS crew await. After a thorough safety talk, we’ll peacefully float downstream for a few hours, getting to know our fellow travelers and soaking in the majesty of our surroundings. Our first stop is Butler Wash, where we’ll be amazed by petroglyphs engraved across a sheer rock wall. The figures depicted here are considered by some to be “Kachinas,” or gods. This is an excellent introduction to rock art we’ll see as we head downstream. We’ll also see “moki steps” that were carved into the cliffs at least 800 years ago.

Not much farther downriver, we stop for a short walk to River House, a well-preserved prehistoric cliff dwelling. We have time to explore this multi-room structure and admire the rock art including human hands, sheep, and snake figures that adorn the overhanging walls and ceiling. We might also explore where the Hole in the Rock expedition first arrived in the area in the late 1800s on the famous Mormon Trail.

Our first day generally sets the pace for our river trip. Typically, we spend a few hours on the water in the morning, sometimes stopping for a great hike, a prehistoric site, or a refreshing swim.

At lunchtime, we pull over to a sandy beach and enjoy a delicious picnic. After feasting and relaxing on the beach (or perhaps swimming, a game of Frisbee, or a nature walk), we get back in our boats and watch the desert panoramas slowly develop and change as we peacefully float down the river.

Mid- to late afternoon, we stop and make camp; you grab your bags and set up your tent while we take care of the kitchen and “living room”—camp chairs and the site for tonight’s campfire (if permitted). This is the perfect time for you to lounge on the beach with that book you’ve wanted to finish forever. Before long, you’ll be savoring pleasing hors d’oeuvres and the beverage of your choice.  Nap, take an exploratory hike, or just sit back and laugh with friends and family as we prepare dinner.

After a satisfying meal, the evening is yours to spend however you wish. Maybe music, stories, or jokes will bring us together tonight; maybe the popping of the fire, the whisper of the river, and the clarity of the big, star-filled sky will encourage silent reflection on the amazing wilderness that is, for now, our home.

Days 2 – 5 (Depending on Trip Length)

Your day begins as the cliff walls reflect the colors of sunrise. Fresh coffee and tea are waiting when you get up; grab a cup, sit back, and take in the glory of the awakening river. Soon breakfast is served—omelets made to order, blueberry pancakes, sizzling bacon, fresh fruit, toast, and juice are among the treats you will indulge in each morning. Once you’ve eaten your fill, you pack up your things as the guides break down camp, then our new day’s adventure begins.

As the San Juan carries us further into this majestic geological corridor, we begin to see evidence of the earth’s activity—slow and steady, or sudden and violent—over the course of the river’s 300-plus-million-year existence. Within the first 10 miles, the river crosses the Comb Ridge monocline, a gigantic upwarp that extends unbroken for over 50 miles. A hike to the Mule Ear diatreme reveals an eruptive ground vent and a rubble mass of rocks from the earth’s mantle. Then it’s back to our boats to begin our descent into the upper San Juan canyon, where we meet our first whitewater, Four-Foot Rapid. Eight-Foot and Ledge Rapids also spice up our tranquil float as we enter the upper “Narrows,” a particularly tight gorge carved out of the brilliant rocky layers by the very river upon which we drift.

If you opt for the 6-day upper canyon trip, we follow the same route as the 3 or 4-day trip but there are more opportunities for hiking and exploration within the canyon.

Day 3, 4 or 6 (Depending on Trip Length)

Our trip draws to a close as we reach the take out at Mexican Hat. Having enjoyed the camaraderie of past days and the magnificence of the river corridor, we say our goodbyes upon returning to Bluff.

Meeting Time & Place

Meeting time

We’ll meet this evening in Bluff, Utah for a pre-trip meeting. This is an opportunity to meet your fellow travelers and guides, and ask any last-minute questions. We’ll float past the town of Mexican Hat and enter the Mendenhall Loop, the beginning of the famous Goosenecks of the San Juan River. This snake-like stretch of river twists and turns so tightly, we cover seven river miles through a section measuring just two miles as the crow flies! Winding back and forth, we’ll pass exquisite works of water and rock like the Tabernacle and the Second Narrows.

We may have time to stop at Mendenhall Loop for a short hike. In 1893 prospector Walter Mendenhall staked a claim at the first gooseneck in search of gold. The remains of his stone cabin rest on the plateau overlooking the river.

Days 4 – 5

After leaving the fascinating Goosenecks, we’re treated to glimpses of rocky wonders like Cedar Mesa, Cowboy Hat, and Eagle Rock. Beneath this stretch of river lie extensive oil fields, and at lower water levels, we may be able to see the very oil seeps where the Ancestral Pueblos may have gathered this precious resource for fuel and medicine. All along, we keep watch for bighorn sheep near the water and Native American ruins hidden atop cliffs.

Our trip is certainly not devoid of whitewater, and this stretch of river delivers plenty of excitement with rapids such as Ross and Government.

A favorite activity on the San Juan is a visit to Slickhorn Gulch for a much-needed swim in its natural plunge pools. This beautiful canyon holds many hidden surprises, including fossils, maidenhair ferns, and waterfalls.

Our trip draws to a close as we reach the Clay Hills boat ramp. Feeling as if we’ve temporarily left our modern age for the past five days, and having grown so close to our guides and fellow travelers, the shuttle ride back to Bluff and “civilization” is bittersweet. However, it doesn’t take long to realize that although we’ve left the river, the river will never leave us.

The number and variety of boats on an OARS trip will vary based on water levels, the number of participants, and other factors we take into account when planning your adventure. Please be aware that in doing so we will ask you to share boat time with your fellow travelers. We don’t assign boats, nor can we guarantee exactly which crafts we bring, but trust us to provide you with the best possible mix for you and others on your trip.

Learn more about the OARS Fleet and the boats that may be a part of your experience: Oar raft , inflatable kayak , or stand-up paddleboard .

During the high-water season use of inflatable kayaks and stand-up paddleboards will be at the guides’ discretion.

After each active day on the river, we pull ashore to camp for the night. Our first task is to unload the boats using a fire-line of crew and guests to expedite the process. Individuals then collect their waterproof bags and locate an area on the beach to camp for the night.

While you put up your tent, the guides will set up the kitchen and central dining/seating area with camp chairs. They will also locate a secluded area away from camp to set up the portable toilet, where privacy is assured.

As guides prepare dinner, hors d’oeuvres are served. This is an opportunity to relax, enjoy a drink if you wish, and reflect on the day with your fellow traveling companions.

In the morning, the first wake-up call lets you know that coffee, hot water for tea or cocoa, juice, fresh fruit, and cold cereal are ready. You can fill your mug and grab a bite, then begin to pack up your personal belongings and sleep gear as the guides prepare breakfast.

After breakfast, the entire camp is broken down and packed up. Once the guides have all of the gear loaded back onto the boats, we’ll head downstream to see what new adventures await us.

More info about Meals & Dietary Restrictions can be found on our Trip Resources page.

Average Air & Water Temperatures

Water Levels & Temperature

A major tributary of the Colorado River, the San Juan forges a watery path through some of the world’s most splendid wilderness. A calm, congenial river, the San Juan offers a relaxing float trip livened up by fun Class II rapids.

The flow of the San Juan River varies according to snowmelt and reservoir releases from the Navajo Dam. Because the whitewater is generally moderate, higher or lower flows do not considerably change the experience. Peak flows usually occur between mid-May and mid-June, but can vary widely from early May and into July. Water temperatures are coldest during the high water period and rain gear and warm synthetic clothing will be required.

Before booking your trip with OARS, there are a few important considerations we’d like you to know about.

  • Physical Requirements: Your outdoor adventure will be an active participatory trip. Please inform us of any physical limitations you may have as soon as possible. If you exceed 260 pounds, please give us a call. Make sure you are exercising frequently in the months leading up to your trip and can meet our Essential Eligibility Criteria .
  • Whitewater Orientation: To increase your safety, we expect everyone to watch our Whitewater Orientation video before joining us.
  • Trip Forms: Each participant will need to complete the required trip forms within two weeks of making a booking. Refer to your confirmation email for the link to the online forms. If you prefer to fill out paper forms, please let us know right away. If you are reserving within 60 days of departure, your forms must be completed immediately to ensure we can properly plan for your trip.

Reservations and Payments

A $400/person deposit is required at the time of booking with final payment due 60 days before departure. Accounts on which final payment has not been received 50 days before the departure date will be canceled.

Payments can be made by check, money order, eCheck, wire transfer, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover. Prices are in US Dollars, and all payments must be made in US Dollars. Payment of the deposit establishes your acceptance of our complete Terms and Conditions. Individual departures and trip capacity are strictly limited by the managing agency. Your payment is fully refundable for 7 days, less a 3% processing fee, after making a reservation when you reserve a trip 7 days or more prior to the final payment due date.

Cancellations and Refunds

Canceling your trip after your deposit is processed will incur cancellation fees because OARS has absorbed costs on your behalf and will turn others away who would like to book the spaces we’re holding for you. If you must cancel your reservation after the rescission period described above, your cancellation fee will be determined according to the schedule below.

We regret that we cannot make exceptions to the cancellation policy for any reason, including foul weather, poor air quality, wildfire activity, acts of terrorism, civil unrest, or personal emergencies. For these reasons, we strongly urge you to consider purchasing a travel protection plan .

Please note that different deposit/cancellation policies may apply for charter groups. Refer to the group organizer’s confirmation email for details.

Canceled Trips

OARS reserves the right to cancel any trip due to insufficient registration or other factors that make the trip impractical to operate. In such instances, we will inform you at least 45 days prior to departure. Do not make non-refundable travel arrangements until you have verified with OARS that your trip is confirmed.

If a trip must be canceled or postponed due to force majeure (factors outside the control of OARS), OARS will provide full credit for payments made toward future travel, or a refund less the initial deposit amount and any non-refundable payments made on your behalf to 3rd-party suppliers. OARS will make good faith efforts to recover deposits made on your behalf to 3rd-party suppliers; however, we cannot guarantee recovery of any or all of the advance payments made. OARS is not responsible for expenses incurred by participants in preparation for a canceled trip.

If you need to move your reservation to a different trip during the same season, or to a credit account for the following year, there is a $25/person fee up until 90 days before departure for a one-time transfer of your payment. Transfer requests made 89 days or less before departure will be treated like a cancellation according to the schedule above.

Sunset Float Trips on Utah's Green River

Cool, quiet, serene, sunset... Sounds pretty nice right?

As fly fishing guides, this is probably our favorite float trip. The crowds are long gone and the night predators start to come out on the prowl. Abundant wildlife, amazing scenery, and great fly fishing.

Sunset Float Trips are the perfect addition for anglers arriving the day prior to their full day Green River float trip. Sunset trips begin anywhere from 3pm to 5pm depending on time of year and current conditions. Trips run till dusk. This float trip consists of about 3 hours on the A Section of the Green River (7 miles long). All flies, snacks and drinks are provided - you may bring adult beverages if you wish.

Let our guides put you on the best late day spots.  The dry fly action is awesome at this time of day, and streamers and mice patterns will bring predatory browns out to play.

Spinner Fall Guide Service is currently the only guide company on the Green River to offer Sunset Float Trips.

Cost is $450
