The Future X , a group made up of three singers and four dancers discovered on TikTok by producer Simon Fuller (“American Idol,” “So You Think You Can Dance”), is teaming up with the Honda Civic Tour with a new format designed to connect fans through live shows and online content.

The Future X, cast after auditioning first on TikTok through a hashtag challenge that generated more than 300 million views, will embark on a seven-city U.S. tour complemented by “entertaining TikTok content.” The individual members will chronicle their road to their Honda Civic Tour performances on top of each 2022 Civic Tour stop being filmed, exclusively for TikTok.

The Honda Civic Tour is an annual promotional tour sponsored by the carmaker that in the past has featured established artists like last year’s virtual headliner H.E.R., as well as Maroon 5, OneRepublic, the pairing of Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato, Blink-182, Black Eyed Peas, One Direction and Charlie Puth. Tickets are given away free via a website where fans can register their interest.

To expand the tour’s reach this year, the Honda Civic Tour will be heavily featured on TikTok, which will follow the Future X’s journey across America along with appearances by stars who’ve risen through the app and other special guests. In addition to reaching the TikTok community of more than a billion users online, the group will perform live performances at venues including Los Angeles’ Roxy and New York City’s Bowery Ballroom.

Popular on Variety

The group will continue the Honda Civic Tour tradition of custom-designing a Honda vehicle, with a Future X-customized 2023 Civic Type R revealed at the Roxy tour stop.

Said Fuller, “Honda has an important, long-standing relationship connecting music fans and artists across America with the Civic Tour, so they were a natural partner for the first live performances of the Future X in the U.S. What makes this Civic Tour unique is the combination of the live Future X experience with TikTok accessibility for millions more Civic fans and music lovers. This hybrid of in-person and digital experiences is the future of touring and the result is a Honda Civic Tour that everyone can be a part of.”

“Coming off the successful virtual Honda Civic Tour with H.E.R., we knew it was time to innovate the tour again by giving fans the best of both worlds – engaging with music fans online and through live, in-person performances,” said Jessika Laudermilk, senior manager of Honda Marketing. “We want to give pop music fans a new way to experience and connect with artists like the Future X who are changing the landscape, while also exposing young and first-time buyers to the Honda vehicles that best fit their lifestyles.”

Fuller, who created the “Idol” format and served as executive producer of “So You Think You Can Dance,” said that TikTok was the perfect platform from which to discover new talent. Fuller was able to cull an impressive shortlist from which the final group members were chosen. The seven are singers Angie Green, Luke Brown, and Maci Wood with dancers Jayna Hughes, Sasha Marie, Tray Taylor and Drew Venegas.

“The Future X combines everything that is exciting about contemporary young artists: authenticity, confidence, empowerment and a unique balance between extraordinary dancers and iconic singers,” said Fuller, who rose to fame managing the Spice Girls and Annie Lennox in his native U.K.

A teaser video with a preview of the group’s forthcoming debut single can be found   here . The members are described as currently living together in Malibu as they work in the studio on more new music.

Free tickets to attend the tour by the Future X in the U.S. — its first since performing to audiences in South America and Europe earlier this year — will be made available here .

The Handling Is the Star of the 2022 Honda Civic

Eleventh-generation Civic Touring sedan still finds ways to improve industry legend now upstaged by crossovers.

2024 honda civic touring

Once a sprawling segment with plenty of players, the field of compact sedans is now ruled by a similarly compact group. All the poorly skilled and middling players have given up long ago, and don't even bother fielding competitors or spending development money in hopes of a comeback, and it's worth noting that the Big Three automakers don't even offer a sedan in this size category anymore. That's both a testament to how good the remaining competitors have become, and also a reflection of consumer tastes in the direction of smallish crossovers, now the default family car.

Those who haven't paid attention to the Civic for the last decade will be forgiven for mistaking the 2022 model for the similarly-styled Accord —that's how large these will appear to some—helped by a far less visually bulbous cabin, less slabby sides and the profile of a much sleeker sedan. Also, the sedan and the hatchback are now remarkably similar looking in profile, unlike in any decade prior. Combined with the absence of a coupe in the lineup, it's clear that, at least in the US, buyers don't want to be seen in a body style long seen as a budget, commuter choice and aren't all that interested in cargo capacity. Buyers want either a sedan with a hatch or a sedan with a trunklid.

2022 honda civic touring

While the base version gets a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four paired with a CVT, good for 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque, the Touring trim we drove featured the optional turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four, producing 180 hp and 177 lb-ft ot torque. Both engines are carryovers, and it's hard to fault Honda here since the previous generation hasn't aged all that much in terms of capability.

What is decidedly new is the interior, with the dash bisected by horizontal honeycomb-patterned vents stretching from end to end. The uncluttered look is interrupted only by the three HVAC control knobs in a contrasting, metallic color. The infotainment touchscreen on top of the dash keeps a similar knob for the volume, with Honda having struck a nice balance between physical buttons and knobs, and the rest of the menus in the infotainment system.

2022 honda civic touring

The 2022 sedan's handling and ride qualities are easily the stars of the entire vehicle, offering surprisingly flat cornering and a well-weighted steering system, along with a reasonably quiet cabin. The suspension stays largely unbothered by minor road defects while offering a sporty ride quality without dipping into harshness, while the steering feels precise, without letting too many imperfections into the driver's hands.

It's hard to believe that, on paper, this is a front-wheel drive sedan with a CVT, but that's where we are with the Civic.

Speaking of the CVT, in highway driving we found it generally well-muted, helped by excellent insulation from road noise, and it's really only the Sport setting that could prompt it to become a bit noisy. But as far as CVTs go, this is easily one of the good ones on the market at the moment, and we say this having spent plenty of time with the bad ones. In fact, it was easy to forget that this was a CVT instead of a conventional automatic—that's how domesticated it was during our time in the Touring model. The EPA figures of 38 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg in town felt like a nice bonus.

The cabin feel continues this theme of quiet refinement, with supportive seats and well chosen interior materials offered in the Touring trim, and all are seemingly lifted from a German premium compact model that could easily be twice the price. There isn't a cheap piece of plastic in sight, with the Civic offering a clean and uncluttered interior that feels roomy enough to be mistaken for the Accord once again.

The quietly elegant cabin, combined with tidy road manners, makes the Civic a surprise standout even in a segment now full of very worthwhile small sedans, easily offering a premium experience while staying south of the $30,000 mark. That's no small achievement these days, when it can take a long list of checked option boxes to get some of the things you want in a new car, and it does it without being flashy or cutting corners somewhere to offer these things.

2022 honda civic touring

Speaking of options, the range-topping Touring trim offers many of the goodies some buyers will want, like the leather-trimmed seats and steering, 12-speaker Bose premium audio, and a 9-inch touchscreen. And it also sits about $7000 north of the base model, along with its turbocharged 1.5-liter that serves up a few extra horses. As usual, the EX and Touring trims are where all the options reside, and on a $30,000 budget this is perhaps where many buyers will gravitate to, while those fine with a more spartan interior will be able to leave the dealership having spent less than $25,000 on something that will still feel like a much more expensive car. The car we drove was priced at $29,295 out the door, which is at the top end of the Civic spectrum.

The 2022 Civic reflects not only how good most of the players in this segment have become, but also how Honda has clearly taken time to get the driving experience right down to the smallest detail, offering a refined yet agile chassis that feels perfectly tuned. Let's hope that crossover shoppers will notice.

2022 Honda Civic Hatchback Makes Global Debut During Honda Civic Tour “Remix” Virtual Performance

  • All-new Civic Hatchback aimed at young, active buyers with increased versatility, sportier driving character and Euro-inspired exterior design
  • Fun-to-drive performance accentuated with available 6-speed manual transmission
  • Interior builds on Civic's clean and simple design philosophy while improving rear seat packaging and cargo area access
  • Civic Hatchback to be built in U.S. for the first time, at Honda's Indiana auto plant

Honda revealed the 2022 Civic Hatchback tonight, the latest addition to the all-new 11th-generation Civic lineup. Building on the 2022 Civic Sedan that arrived in Honda dealerships earlier this month, the most fun-to-drive Civic Hatchback ever combines striking, Euro-inspired exterior styling and five-door versatility with an even sportier driving experience. Available with a 6-speed manual transmission, Civic Hatchback is designed to meet the needs of young, active buyers. It will be built in the U.S. for the first time, with production to begin later this year atHonda's Greensburg, Indiana auto plant. The Civic Hatchback premiered during the Civic Tour “Remix” performance on the Honda Stage YouTube Channel, and can be viewed here: youtube.com/HondaStage .

Inspired by the coupe-like profile of European sportbacks, the 2022 Civic Hatchback builds upon the Civic Sedan's new clean and simple exterior design direction in a fresh and exhilarating new way. It also promises driving enthusiasts an even more dynamic experience, with ride and handling developed in Europe and an upgraded 6-speed manual transmission available with both the naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter and 1.5-liter turbocharged engines.

Civic Hatchback includes all of the technological updates made to the 2022 Civic Sedan, including a new standard single-camera Honda Sensing® suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies. Key options include a 9” color touchscreen, Bose premium sound system and a 10.2-inch all-digital instrument display.

“Civic Hatchback plays a critical role in the Honda lineup and we expect the all-new 11th-generation model to be even more popular than its predecessor,” said Dave Gardner, executive vice president of National Operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “With its sporty, fun-to-drive driving character, Euro exterior styling and flexible interior packaging, the new Civic Hatchback will appeal to those all-important young and active buyers.”

Reintroduced to the U.S. market with the 10th-generation Civic in 2016, Civic Hatchback has proven itself a breakout hit and has grown to account for more than 20 percent of all Civic sales. With more than 1.7 million units sold in 10th generation form, Civic has been the No. 1 selling vehicle in America – car or light truck – with first-time buyers, Millennials, Gen Z and multicultural customers over the last five years 1 .

What's New:

  • Sporty Euro-inspired exterior styling with a coupe-like profile
  • Simple, clean interior design with improved outward visibility
  • New lightweight composite hatch structure reduces hinge size for a clean roofline
  • Enhanced structure with 19-percent increase in torsional rigidity
  • Cargo opening widened by 1.6-inches
  • Distinct front-end styling adds to sporty character
  • Available short-throw 6-speed manual transmission (Sport and Sport Touring)
  • Available 1.5-liter turbocharged engine makes 180 horsepower and 177 lb.-ft. of torque on regular unleaded

Sporty Exterior Design With a coupe-like profile inspired by European sportbacks, the 2022 Civic Hatchback builds upon the Civic Sedan's new exterior design in a distinctive and sporty way. Its low hood, front fenders and horizontal beltline grounds the body, accentuates the wheels and tires, and enables an expansive, airy greenhouse. Compared to the 10th-generation Civic Hatchback, its windshield pillars also have been moved rearward by nearly 2 inches (1.96 inches), its wheelbase is 1.4-inches longer and its rear track is 0.5-inch wider.

Civic Hatchback incorporates unique styling cues to give it an even sportier attitude, including a distinctive grille mesh with a slight concave shape. For a sportier coupe-like profile, the Hatchback's rear overhang and overall length are 4.9-inches shorter than the Civic Sedan's.

The Hatchback's smoother, sleeker roof line is made possible by a new lightweight composite hatch and by moving the hinge mechanism outward, allowing a roof height reduction of 50 mm in the hinge area. A unique taillight design, and center high-mounted stop lamp (CHMSL) that spans nearly the entire width of its hatch, further emphasize Hatchback's wider rear track.

Eight colors are available on the 2022 Civic Hatchback, including two new hues: Boost Blue Pearl and Smokey Mauve Pearl.

Versatile Human-Centered Interior Design Civic Hatchback's interior features many of the ame design and packaging elements as the new and critically acclaimed cabin of the Civic Sedan. By evoking the human-centered cabin design of early generations of Civic, the Hatchback's new interior is simple, clean and uncluttered with exceptional visibility, intuitive ergonomics, extraordinary passenger volume and driver-focused technology.

Also like the Civic Sedan, outward visibility is enhanced by Civic's pulled-back A-pillars, low hood, flat dashboard, low cowl and repositioned outside mirrors, which are now mounted on the doors. The instrument panel is designed with a minimum of cutlines to reduce windshield reflections and visual distractions, and the attractive new metal honeycomb instrument panel accent isn't just visually striking, it hides the air vents. Class-above materials are also used, especially on touchpoints, and careful attention has been paid to the premium action of all switchgear and controls.

In the rear, Civic Hatchback features larger side windows, a new small corner window in the C-pillar and a single piece rear window to enhance rearward visibility, creating a more spacious and airy feeling for rear seat passengers.

Civic Hatchback rear legroom has been improved by nearly 1.4 inches and rear headroom has been preserved, thanks to the new hinge design for the new composite hatch.

Interior versatility is key to Civic Hatchback's unique character, with generous cargo space more easily accessible thanks to a 1.6-inch wider lower hatch opening and low lift-over height. The standard 60/40 split seatback can be quickly folded for expanded capacity and the side-pull cargo cover makes it easy to quickly open or conceal the rear cargo area.

Standard on all Civic Hatchback grades, Honda's new Body Stabilizing Seat enhances comfort on long drives. In addition, Civic Hatchback is available in EX-L grade, offering the same perforated leather seats with added shoulder support as available in Sport Touring grades. Civic Hatchback LX and Sport feature cloth and combination seat trim, respectively.

New Rigid Body Improves Dynamics and Safety Performance Civic Hatchback's new body structure shows significant gains in rigidity, with a 19 percent improvement in torsional rigidity versus the previous generation. The stiffer structure supports improvements in ride, handling and refinement. Reductions in noise, vibration and harshness are further augmented with the extensive use of structural adhesives, spray-in foam in the pillars, and additional sound deadening in the firewall and under the floor.

To meet present and anticipated future collision standards while minimizing additional weight, Civic Hatchback uses the next generation of Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. This is realized through careful design coupled with the use of lightweight materials, such as aluminum and various grades of high-strength steel, as well as the additional structural adhesives.

Sporty and Fun Powertrains For the 11th-generation, Civic Hatchback offers two engine choices for the first time, and both will be available with a 6-speed manual transmission. LX and Sport grades feature a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, producing 158 horsepower at 6,500 rpm (SAE net) and 138 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm (SAE net).

It's coupled with a revised CVT that enhances fuel efficiency through the use of a more robust electric hydraulic pump that reduces the load on the mechanical pump, and a ball-bearing secondary shaft to reduce friction. The CVT also has been programmed to provide early downshifts during braking and features revised Step-Shift programming that simulates physical gear changes under hard acceleration for a more familiar and enjoyable driving experience. Fuel efficiency and emissions are notably improved due in part to a new standard idle-stop system (CVT only) and a new catalytic converter design.

Powering EX-L and Sport Touring trims is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder producing 180 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (SAE net) and 177 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,700 to 4,500 rpm (SAE net) on 87 octane gasoline. Multiple measures contribute to improved fuel economy ratings, including new more efficient turbo plumbing and the addition of Variable Timing and lift Electronic Control (VTEC®) to the exhaust valves. The CVT for the 1.5-liter turbo features improved torque converter performance, while also adopting revised Step-Shift programming.

A new 6-speed manual transmission is available in Sport and Sport Touring grades. The transmission has been revised for an even sportier feel with improved shift rigidity and shorter shift throws. A new dual-mass flywheel helps reduce noise and vibration transmitted through the drivetrain.

In addition to the standard Normal and Eco driving modes, 2.0L Sport and 1.5L Sport Touring trims of the 2022 Civic Hatchback with the CVT now feature a user-selectable Sport mode. Using a toggle switch on the center console, the new Sport mode alters the drive ratios and mapping for a sportier feel. Eco mode reduces throttle and transmission sensitivity, as well as air conditioning output to help preserve fuel efficiency.

Chassis Tuned for Responsiveness, Fun-to-Drive and Comfort For maximum driver enjoyment, Civic Hatchback's suspension and steering were developed in Europe and fine-tuned for North America. Civic has long been recognized as the benchmark for sporty handling in the compact class, and this is the most fun-to-drive Civic Hatchback ever.

Similar to Sedan, the front MacPherson struts feature new low-friction ball joints and front damper mount bearings to improve steering feel and self-centering. The spring and damper alignment has been optimized to minimize operational friction, and a new larger compliance bushing with an improved bushing axis minimizes harshness.

The rear track's 0.5-inch additional width adds stability and the additional 1.4-inches of wheelbase help smooth out its ride quality. New rear lower control arm bushings promote better straight-line stability and turn in, while reducing noise and vibration inside the cabin. The electronic power steering has been re-tuned to provide better feedback and improved straight-line stability.

These suspension and steering upgrades result in a smoother, more linear and more precise feel in turns, with the reduction in yaw delay leading to a more responsive and synchronized feeling behind the wheel. Additionally, the reduced suspension friction and improved bushings help reduce harsh road shock, such as when going over railroad crossings, by 20 percent.

Additional chassis updates include new low-drag front brake calipers, and low-friction front and rear wheel bearings to reduce rolling resistance, helping improve fuel economy ratings. The all-new aluminum front subframe, with an efficient truss and rib structure, provides rigidity and stability.

Technology that Serves the Driver This is also the most technologically advanced Civic Hatchback ever featuring digital meters for the first time and larger touchscreens for the 2022 model year. Civic LX, Sport and EX-L grades are equipped with a new 7-inch color LCD instrument display which features an all-digital speedometer and tachometer on the left side, and a physical speedometer dial on the right.

Civic's new all-digital LCD instrument display is standard on the Hatchback Sport Touring model. This 10.2-inch display features a configurable high-definition full-color LCD panel with either a traditional layout of round needle-and-dial gauge displays or a bar-graph style design.

Drivers also can display a variety of user-selectable information, such as the current music selection and a trip computer, on the left and right side of the screen. The middle of the display is used to indicate the status of various Honda Sensing® safety and driver-assistive systems, and the Civic icon on the screen features brake lights, headlights and turn signals that turn on and off with those functions.

LX, Sport and EX-L grades come standard with a new 7” color touchscreen, the largest standard screen in Civic history, with physical power/volume knob and a tuning/selection knob. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration are standard and a row of hard buttons at the bottom allows drivers to easily skip music tracks, navigate the audio menu, and select between phone, radio, Bluetooth ® or USB media.

Civic Hatchback Sport Touring features an all-new 9” color touchscreen, which is the largest touchscreen ever offered in Civic, wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration, and standard Qi-compatible wireless charging.

In addition to large, easy-to-recognize icons and a simplified navigation structure with fewer embedded menus, the 9” touchscreen features a physical volume knob and hard buttons for Home and Back functions. A 0.8-inch finger rest immediately below the screen on all Civics provides a stable surface to rest your hand, so using the touchscreen is easier and less distracting while driving.

Bose Premium Sound System A new available Bose audio system takes Civic audio to the next level, thanks to Centerpoint 2 and Bose SurroundStage digital signal processing that is custom-engineered precisely for the Civic's new interior. Regardless of seating position, drivers and passengers are placed in the middle of the music, with a clear and spacious listening experience for all audio content.

Expert audio engineers developed the Bose sound system with advanced components and technologies, working closely with Honda engineers to integrate the system early in the vehicle design process for optimal performance. Clear, impactful sound is delivered through high-performance Bose speakers, strategically placed throughout the Civic's interior for exceptional music reproduction across all frequencies, low to high.

Helping to preserve the quality of the listening experience, Dynamic Speed Compensation technology automatically adjusts volume and tone based on vehicle speed, reducing the need for drivers to manually adjust settings while on the road.

Bose Premium Sound System details:

  • One 3.25-inch (80 mm) Bose Twiddler mid/high-range speaker in the center of the instrument panel
  • Four 1-inch (25 mm) lightweight neodymium tweeters – one in each A-pillar and one in each rear door
  • Two 6.5-inch (165 mm) wide-range speakers – one in each front door
  • Two 5.25-inch (130 mm) wide-range speakers – one in each rear door
  • Two 3.25-inch (80 mm) Bose Twiddler mid/high-range speakers – one in each C-pillar
  • One 8-inch (200 mm) woofer housed inside a custom enclosure mounted in the right rear quarter panel
  • A Bose digital amplifier with 12 channels of custom equalization and advanced digital signal processing

New and Advanced Safety Performance As with the Sedan, Civic Hatchback includes multiple new active and passive safety systems. This includes the world's first application of driver and passenger frontal airbags designed to better reduce the likelihood of injuries from severe brain trauma associated with angled frontal collisions. The new front driver's airbag uses an innovative donut-shaped structure to cradle and hold the head to reduce rotation. The passenger-side front airbag uses a three-chamber design to achieve a similar result, with two outer chambers designed to cradle and control head rotation.

Civic's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is enhanced for improved compatibility with larger vehicles. This includes improved occupant protection in angled frontal collisions, with a new upper A-pillar structure, side frame and lower firewall structure – all designed to route crash energy around the cabin. Side impact protection has been improved, with stiffer structures in the roof, side sill and B-pillar, doors, and the rear wheel arch and C-pillar.

Standard on all Civic Hatchback grades is a new Honda Sensing® suite of active safety and driver-assistive technologies that uses a new single-camera system providing a longer, wider field of view than the previous radar-and-camera based system. Combined with software advances and a new, more powerful processor, the system is capable of more quickly and accurately identifying pedestrians, bicyclists and other vehicles, along with road lines and road signs.

Honda Sensing® also adds Traffic Jam Assist, and the new camera-based system improves on existing functionality, such as more natural brake application and quicker reactions when using Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). It also has more linear and natural steering action when using the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS). Sport Touring grades feature new Low-Speed Braking Control, and front and rear false-start prevention with the addition of eight sonar sensors.

Honda leadership in advancing pedestrian safety continues. The 2022 Civic features a new front bumper beam safety plate designed to decrease leg injuries and a hood with an embossed inner structure designed to improve head protection performance.

After 2,000 kilometres of testing, I found where the new Civic does its best work

Earlier this year, Honda’s Alliston, Ontario assembly plant began production of the 11th Generation Honda Civic, complete with an extensive redesign and overhaul. This Canadian-built favourite hits the road with major upgrades to key systems and components, and delivers the Civic’s best-yet driving experience. I recently spent 2,000 kilometres at the wheel of the latest model, testing and filming for various assignments on TV and web. Below, I’ll share my key impressions, made during a highway-intensive test-drive and extensive use on the secondary highways and backroads of Northern Ontario.

My tester was a top-dog Civic Touring, with an ask of about $30,500 with every option in the roster. The ‘Touring’ designation, of course, refers to this machine’s setup as a compelling long-distance cruiser.

Car Review: 2022 Honda Civic Touring Back to video

The driving experience starts with the Civic’s seats and seating position. Drivers drop down low into the cabin, and the leather seats are immediately slippery for easy entry and exit, and also immediately supportive with bolstering that’s both stabilizing and comfortable. In quick order, drivers are seated and comfy with minimal effort, riding low within the machine’s cabin but still rewarded with good outward sightlines. If you’re a fan of that low-down, in-control, anti-crossover driving feel, you’ll like the setup.

Full Screen is not supported on this browser version.

You may use a different browser or device to view this in full screen.

Between the driver and the tall, upright windscreen is an all-digital instrument cluster that’s easily manipulated and customized via a set of toggle-dials on the steering wheel. The on-screen graphics and process of flicking through various display outputs and menus is a leap ahead of the last-generation car, and the same goes for the central touch-screen nearby.  I’ve been griping about Honda’s display graphics for years, but in the latest Civic, things are looking slick and top-of-the-line. On my test-drive, I appreciated the wireless charging and wireless Android Auto systems continually. An initial one-time hookup takes seconds, and from that point on, drivers need only toss their (compatible) phone atop a charging pad, and within about 10 seconds, key functions are upscaled to the central screen and the phone begins recharging — no cord or clutter required. A punchy Bose stereo system helps complete the multimedia experience.

The rigid new body structure is even stiffer than its predecessor, boasting respective improvements of 8 and 13 per cent to torsional and bending rigidity.

Stronger body structures help make fo r a quieter ride on rough surfaces, a key consideration in my Northern locale. The stronger a vehicle’s structure, the less it flexes when striking a bump in the road. This flexing pumps air through the vehicle cabin, resulting in added noise. A stronger structure means less flexing, and from the driver’s seat, a ride that stays quieter, more of the time, when the going gets rough. Stronger body structures also make a better foundation from which to tune a suspension system more precisely. The end result, from the driver’s seat, is easily as good as I’ve ever seen at this price point when it comes to maintaining a dense, solid and comfortable drive, even on badly crumbling backroads. The highway drive is similarly impressive, specifically since the car feels heavy, sturdy, and quiet here, too. So, when it comes to the new Civic’s feel on the road, my $30,500 tester punches well above its weight.

Other backroads ride-quality champs I’ve recently tested include the Subaru Impreza (with AWD), the Buick Envision and Mitsubishi Outlander (if you’re looking for a crossover), and the Nissan Sentra, which Civic shoppers should also test-drive as both machines share a similarly up-level driving experience relative to their price.

Additional upgrades to the Civic’s chassis saw engineers hunt down and eliminate friction from braking system parts, ball joints, and even the spring and damper alignment of the suspension system. By removing as much friction as possible from these parts, the Civic handles, steers and even brakes with a more precise, eager, and polished feel than I expect for the money. Drivers can expect a vehicle with steering feel, braking feel, handling and ride quality that all feel dialled in and balanced off of one another for a convincingly high-end feel, not unlike what you’d expect from an entry-luxury model costing thousands more.

This all comes together beautifully on a winding highway, where I found the Civic does its best work. The car glides from bend to bend with the sort of smooth, chill, but athletic poise I usually expect from something pricier. The steering is smooth and precise, but not twitchy. This makes it easy for drivers to dial in their selected line more easily, the first time. During cornering, the suspension takes a set early and the car remains flat and tidy, inspiring confident corner carving with less need to slow down or re-adjust your trajectory into a corner. There’s less second-guessing, which reduces driver workload. Even the brake pedal response feels fine-tuned to inspire confidence with a strong initial bite at the top of the pedal, and a precise and easy-to-modulate feel. For the first time,  I think we’ve got a mainstream-version of the Civic that has some serious appeal to driving enthusiasts.

If you’re one of them, take care to use SPORT mode on your test-drive.

The 1.5 litre turbo engine is a revised power unit based on the engine from the last-generation Civic. The new powerplant has revised turbocharger plumbing, and runs VTEC to optimize breathing on the exhaust cams. Output is rated at 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft, though an assault on engine noise means this powerplant operates more quietly, more of the time, in order to help match the high-end feel imparted by the drive. That’s bolstered by improved torque-converter performance from the gear-free CVT transmission, which gives it a feel that’s more direct and less soggy.

In Normal or ECON drive modes, however, enthusiast drivers may find the powertrain too numbed-down. Throttle response is reduced, and the engine and transmission conspire to keep the revs low and steady here — perfect for the light-footed driver. Those with heavier boots will need to toggle into SPORT mode, which tightens and heavies-up the highway steering feel for corner browsing, and (more importantly), puts more of the engine’s torque more easily within striking distance, more of the time.

Conversely, ECON mode knocks responsiveness back and even reduces the air conditioner performance, to make it easier for drivers to achieve maximum fuel efficiency. Be sure to try all three drive modes on your test-drive, because there’s a good chance you’ll find a favourite pretty quickly.

Gripes mostly relate to operating the Civic in reverse gear, strangely.

The transmission often shifts from drive to reverse with a muted but detectable ‘clunk’; backup camera graphics are good, not great; ditto the turning circle. Further, I found throttle response in reverse gear to be frustrating at times. Specifically, quickly reversing into my driveway from a busy street required a hearty smash on the throttle pedal.

Elsewhere, look for adult-friendly rear seating in the Civic Sedan, generous at-hand storage provisions for smaller items, and plenty of access to standard and high-speed USB charging ports.

Ultimately, here’s a four-door machine with, I figure, the most dialled-in driving experience you’ll find for the dollar, and one that delivers an excellent on-the-road feel across a surprisingly wide range of situations.

Shoppers after something sportier can check out the Civic Hatchback, Si, and Type R as well. More on those later.

preview for Honda Civic Buyer's Guide

What's New for 2022?

The Civic is all-new for 2022, with a redesigned body and an updated interior. Like the last generation model, the 2022 Civic will be offered in both sedan and hatchback body styles.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Honda Civic starts at $23,645 and goes up to $31,145 depending on the trim and options.

Our recommendation is the well-equipped EX trim on the sedan model, which comes with a lot of additional features that easily justify the increase in price. Those niceties include blind-spot monitoring, a power sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated exterior mirrors, and heated front seats. It also comes standard with the more powerful 180-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine. If you're buying the hatchback, we'd direct you to the EX-L, which offers similar equipment and adds leather upholstery.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Even though it has redesigned everything else about the new Civic, Honda has decided to carry over the powertrain options from the previous-generation car. Base models come standard with a 158-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder while the upgrade engine continues to be a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that now makes 180 horsepower. The new Civic is offered solely with front-wheel-drive car. Sadly, the manual transmission offered on the previous generation Civic sedan has been cut for 2022, leaving a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) as the sole offering; a six-speed manual is still available on the hatchback model. At our test track, our turbocharged Touring sedan needed 7.5 seconds to reach 60 mph , which is slightly slower than the last generation Civic's result. The manual Sport Touring hatchback we tested did slightly better at 7.3 seconds to 60 mph. Luckily, the spry handling, communicative steering, and well-balanced ride that we appreciated so much in the last generation model are present and accounted for here. Sporty Si and high-performance Type-R variants are also in the works and both will offer a manual transmission; we review those models separately.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

According to the EPA, the most fuel efficient version of the new Civic is the mid-range EX, which earns ratings of 33 mpg city, 42 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route , the 2022 Civic Sport hatchback delivered 36 mpg. For more information about the Civic's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

A more streamlined interior design debuts in the 2022 Civic, with cleaner lines and a dashboard featuring a full-width honeycomb-patterned mesh design element that cleverly hides the air vents. A wider center console appears less cluttered than the outgoing model's and features what looks like a large, deep bin ahead of the shift lever for stashing smartphones, keys, and road-trip snacks. Honda says passenger space is roughly the same is also offered and its cargo bay is more generous.

2022 honda civic touring sedan

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2022 Civic will come standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display, but a larger 9.0-inch unit is optional, as is a 10.2-inch digital gauge display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard and also offer wireless connectivity when paired with the larger of the two screens. Other options include in-dash navigation, a Bose stereo system, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

A host of driver-assistance features will be offered as standard, including automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection and an adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. For more information about the Civic's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Standard adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Honda's standard warranty package is merely average, with rivals such as the Elantra and Kia Forte offering more comprehensive coverage. Buyers of the Civic also won't find any complimentary scheduled maintenance plan, something the Corolla offers as standard.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

honda civic tour 2022

Throughout its 11 generations, the Honda Civic has generally followed a pattern of a revolutionary redesign followed six years later by a more cautious evolutionary approach. As the all-new, 11th generation model, the 2022 Honda Civic falls into the evolution category. The engine choices and interior dimensions are basically identical, the driving experience isn't terribly different, and the overall shape is similar. It's also every bit the class leader its predecessor was upon its introduction six years ago.

So what's new? Though the Civic sedan's general shape, including that fastback roofline, is maintained, the old car's bulbous fenders, exaggerated lines and extraneous vents have been replaced with a cleaner, simplified look bound to age better over time. It also looks more expensive than it is. Most of that goes for the also-new 2022 Civic Hatchback . The interior is similarly more premium in appearance, if not plastics quality, with a striking new design that manages to simultaneously declutter the cabin and improve the infotainment system with extra physical buttons. And how about those cool retro-inspired air vents?

Basically, the Civic looks better inside and out, remains a terrific compact sedan to drive, and its surprisingly spacious cabin and trunk provide impressive practicality. Its value proposition is also maintained with generous feature content, competitive pricing, excellent fuel economy and Honda's longstanding reputation for reliability and resale value. While the Mazda 3, Hyundai Elantra and Nissan Sentra are definitely worthy of consideration, this new Civic sure makes it hard to go in a different direction.

Interior & Technology    |    Passenger & Cargo Space    |    Performance & Fuel Economy

What it's like to drive    |    pricing & features    |    crash ratings & safety features, what's new for 2022.

Besides the changes highlighted above, the completely redesigned Civic will only be available as a sedan and a hatchback similar in concept to the previous generation. The coupe is no more. The high-performance Civic Si will be a late-availability addition to the '22 lineup, while the Civic Type R is on hiatus while Honda readies a version based on the new generation.

2022 Honda Civic Sport Interior

What's the Civic interior and in-car technology like?

In a segment filled with surprisingly impressive interiors, the 2022 Civic interior delivers even in the lower Sport trim level with cloth seats and the base infotainment system (pictured in the large picture above). This is still an economy car, so there's plenty of hard plastic about (center console, door sills), but what you see and touch most come together in a tasteful, modern design that looks (and feels) like it belongs in a much pricier car. There's more than a whiff of Audi right down to the way the buttons and knobs click satisfyingly. We also have to call out the dash-width air vents, with their honeycomb openings, metal-like finish and clever knob controllers (they're outlined in red in the Civic Si ). They're so great Audi probably wishes it had come up with them first.

Perhaps most importantly, however, the Civic is no longer held back by its infotainment system. There's a new 7-inch base touchscreen (below left) and the Touring gets the 9-inch unit found in Accord (below right), but both represent improvements over the last-generation system with quicker responses, a more sensible menu structure and no glitches during our time with it. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard (wireless in the Touring), and with CarPlay at least, we like that Honda doesn't lock out touchscreen controls for the Music app (a common annoyance).

Other changes include a more conventional center console design (the old multi-level bin with its sliding cupholders and tray was perhaps too clever for its own good) and new digital instrument panels. The LX, Sport and EX have a combination of analog speedometer and 7-inch multi-purpose display, but it all appears to blend together into one unit. It's traditional in design, yet modern in functionality. The Touring gets a completely digital, 10.2-inch instrument panel that's similar in basic appearance but provides greater functionality and flashier graphics.

honda civic tour 2022

How big is the Civic?

The new Civic is technically bigger than the last version on the outside, but not enough to really matter. Interior dimensions are identical. Its 37.4 inches of rear legroom is bettered only by the Hyundai Elantra, and is about 2 inches more than most competitors. For a compact car, it's definitely not compact back there. A 6-foot-3 driver with the seat pushed all the way back still found enough space in the back seat to sit comfortably "behind himself." There was also just enough headroom, though that may not be the case in the EX or Sport with their standard sunroof.

There's also nothing compact about the sedan's trunk. On paper, it has 14.8 cubic-feet of volume (14.4 in the Touring). That may be 0.3 less than the old trunk, but it still betters its competitors. In practice, we found it had enough space to fit all six suitcases of our luggage test with some room left over. Basically, don't be so sure you need to step up to Accord for family duty.

As for the Civic Hatchback, it's 4.9 inches shorter in overall length, but that's entirely the result of having less rear overhang. We haven't performed a luggage test on this body style, but we suspect it won't be able to quite so easily swallow all those bags even if it gains additional height and therefore large-item utility thanks to its height. Also, as before, the Hatchback's cargo area is more like a notchback sedan (think an Audi A7) than a traditional VW Golf-like hatchback.

honda civic tour 2022

What are the Civic fuel economy and performance specs?

The 2022 Honda Civic LX and Sport are powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four that produces 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque, which is a typical amount for the segment. Front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) are standard on every Civic sedan, but the Hatchback Sport gets the option of a six-speed manual. Fuel economy is 31 miles per gallon city, 40 mpg highway and 35 mpg combined for the LX. The Sport is lower, likely due to it bigger wheels, but still excellent at 30/37/33. Hatchback fuel economy was not available at the time of this writing.

A 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four good for 180 hp and 177 lb-ft is standard on the Civic Sedan EX and Touring, and the Civic Hatchback EX-L and Sport Touring. A CVT is standard on every trim level, but the Sport Touring offers the six-speed manual as an option. Besides its considerably stronger acceleration, this engine also gets better fuel economy. EPA estimates for the sedan are 33/42/36 for the EX and 31/38/34 for the Touring.

The 2022 Honda Civic Si also has a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four, but features a much different power band. The resulting output is 200 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. As always, the Civic Si is front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission is mandatory.

What's the Civic like to drive?

Through its 11 generations, the Honda Civic has always been at its best and most competitive when it was responsive and even fun to drive. That was certainly the case with the last Civic, which rose to new heights thanks to added refinement and the low-end torque provided by the available turbo engine. The 2022 Civic picks up the torch and builds on that progress. It's indeed fun to drive, with a lightweight and agile feel that encourages you to seek out winding roads. The steering is precise and consistently weighted, imparting a sense of connection to the driver. Throttle response is also as you'd expect from a driver-focused car, though selecting Sport mode in the Sport or Touring trims really wakes things up with old-school, hair-trigger reactions that any driving enthusiast should appreciate.

The turbo engine remains the one to get given its greater torque, strong acceleration and superior fuel economy. That said, the naturally aspirated base engine is certainly acceptable – it has comparable power to its competitors, but it's smoother and sounds better. It is a Honda after all. We wish either engine could be paired to a manual, but at least the mandatory CVT makes up for some slightly blender-like noises by limiting the yo-yoing between high and low revs associated with this increasingly common transmission. It also simulates gear changes like other CVTs, but does so in a more natural way than what you'll find in a Subaru, for example. Now, if you don't like the idea of a CVT at all, the Hatchback alone offers a sweet six-speed manual with either engine. The gearbox is flickable, but weighty. Notchy, but not burdensome. A technical treat, but oh-so-fun to play with. Seriously, the shifter feel in this approximately $30,000 Honda puts to shame those in much more expensive sports cars .

We have yet to drive the 2022 Honda Civic Si.

How much is the 2022 Civic price and what features are available?

Pricing for the 2022 Honda Civic can be found below broken down into the available trim levels of both the Sedan and Hatchback. All include the $995 destination charge.

LX: $22,695 Sport: $24,095 EX: $25,695 Touring: $29,295

LX: $23,915 Sport: $25,115 EX-L: $27,615 Sport Touring: $30,415

Note there is no price difference between the Hatchback's available transmissions.

We would skip the base LX and start your search with the Sport. Although their basic equipment is broadly similar (and generous), the Sport has some key niceties that seem well worth the modest price increase: alloy wheels, leather-wrapped wheel, proximity entry and push-button start, and an eight-speaker sound system. You should also look at the EX in regards to the sedan: though it doesn't look as sporty and doesn't come with different drive modes, it does include the highly desirable turbocharged engine (plus blind-spot warning, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a sunroof) for a still-reasonable premium. The turbo engine shows up on the Hatchback EX-L.

You can find a full breakdown of features, specs and local pricing here on Autoblog .

What are the Civic safety ratings and driver assistance features?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2022 Civic Sedan and Hatchback a Top Safety Pick+ and received the best-possible performance in every single category, which is a rare feat. The government hasn't crash tested it.

Driver assistance features are not only abundant, but their performance have been greatly improved for 2022, especially the adaptive cruise control system and its lane-centering capability. The Civic can also now be equipped with a traditional blind-spot warning system (warning lights in the mirror) instead of the old LaneWatch blind-spot camera that was as much of an annoyance as an aid. Every Civic now comes standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with steering assistance and stop-and-go capability. Blind-spot warning shows up on the EX and Touring.

  • Sharp handling makes the Civic fun to drive
  • Better-than-average fuel economy and cargo space
  • Good amount of easy-to-use tech features
  • Noticeable road noise on the highway
  • Lack of front-seat lumbar support
  • Occasional false alarms from safety features can be distracting

What's new

  • The Honda Civic is redesigned for 2022
  • Revised styling and enhanced technology features
  • Available sedan and hatchback body styles
  • Kicks off the 11th Civic generation

The Honda Civic has a reputation built on 50 years of affordability, efficiency and durability, and the 2022 redesign looks to keep that tradition going strong. This 11th-generation Civic gets a thorough makeover inside and out. Some may say the new Civic's more conventional design is boring compared to the previous model's flamboyance, but we contend it's cleaner and more refined.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2022 Honda Civic LX 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl CVT) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.50 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

There's little new under the hood, where you'll still find a base four-cylinder engine or a turbocharged four-cylinder that provides quicker acceleration. As for technology features, Honda is often slower than other automakers to incorporate exotic features into its more budget-friendly cars. However, this Civic does have a few new additions. On the top-level Touring and Si trims, for instance, there's a wireless charging pad, a digital instrument panel, and a 9-inch touchscreen with additional wireless functionality for CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

We're impressed with the 2022 Honda Civic. While you might want to take a look at the refined Mazda 3, feature-packed Kia Forte or stylish new Hyundai Elantra, the Civic tops the class thanks to its fun-to-drive nature, roominess and high fuel efficiency. Check out our Expert Rating to get our full evaluation of the Civic's performance, roominess and more.

What's It Like to Live With

Fresh off naming the Honda Civic our Edmunds Top Rated Sedan for 2022, we added a Honda Civic Si to our long-term review fleet. That means rowing through the gears of our manual Civic Si for 20,000 miles and 12 months to see what we like and dislike about one of our favorite cars. Check out all of our experiences with the 2022 Honda Civic Si.
