Deichkind are a rap band hailing from Hamburg, Germany who formed in 1997. Since debuting in 2000 they have become one of the most ridiculous, yet unmissable live acts in European hip-hop, and have released six studio albums in total.

Philipp Grütering and Malte Pittner grew up in the Hamburg borough of Bergedorf and met while going to school together. Fuelled by a passion for hip-hop, a desire to shake up the conservative German rap scene and an absolute aversion to taking themselves too seriously, the duo formed Deichkind with producer Sebastian Hackert and DJ Phono shortly after leaving high school. As a band dedicated to being fun in an incredibly po-faced scene, it’s safe to say that they weren’t exactly embraced by the rap community when they debuted. A lot of their early shows were aborted mere minutes after taking the stage due to the crowd not taking too kindly to the band’s outlandish antics, usually expressing their umbrage via the medium of thrown glass bottles, tin cans and the occasional tomato. Not to be deterred, the band recruited a third MC in the form of Buddy Inflagranti, and by late 1999, enough people convinced, so the band signed to Warner’s Showdown record label.

Their debut album “Bitte ziehen Sie durch” was released in early 2000 and its lead single “Bon Voyage” was a sleeper hit, getting the band slots in practically every major music festival in Germany. This exposed a lot of people to their utterly ridiculous live show, making the band cult sensations and setting them up to be the biggest rap act in Germany. In true Deichkind style, that’s exactly what didn’t happen. Instead the band took a three year hiatus after the release of their second effort “Noch 5 Minuten Mutti” in 2002 and returned as a straight electro-pop act. Ever since then the band have gone from strength to strength, releasing a further four albums and continuing to take their thrillingly bonkers live show everywhere that’ll have them. There is truly no-one else in the world like them, and for that, they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

In the world of live music, there’s undeniably room for extremely serious concerts. The kind where a solemn young thing sits at a piano, deftly strokes its keys and emotes about “the issues” while lit by a lone spotlight and is watched by a hushed theatre full of people who read Q magazine and have informed opinions about what the perfect Radiohead set list would be. I personally have been to a whole bunch of those shows and they can be utterly brilliant. But that’s not to say that I don’t sometimes want to see a guy dressed head to foot in neon coloured bin bags rap blisteringly fast in German to a backing track of sample laden hip-hop while hopping around like a maniac inside an onstage bouncy castle inscribed with the words “YIPPI YIPPI YEAH!”. When I do want to see that (and that’s quite often) I simply wait patiently for some UK dates from Hamburg based Hip Hop collective Deichkind. The band describes their live show as “a children’s birthday party for adults”, and that just about sums it up. It’s a riot of noise, colour and joy that’s an abundance of fun for the people invited, and probably an absolute nightmare to clean up afterwards. There’re few other bands in the world quite like them and truly a bucket list band for anyone passionate about live music. Anyone with a passion for comedy sunglasses and masks that light up should also sign up, cos there’re loads of them as well!

Most people who have little knowledge about the genres of rap and hip hop presume it all comes exclusively from the East or West Coast of the States. Yet following from the golden age of hip hop in the 80s, many other countries experienced an influx of new performers inspired by the movement. Germany in particularly had a strong underground scene and it was within this that Deichkind formed and made themselves known.

The group has been operating since the mid-90s blending hip hop and electro yet it was not until 2012 that one of their albums was considered to be a commercial hit in their homeland. Now entertaining thousands at a time, there is still some evidence of the basement intimacy of the early shows through intense renditions of 'Limit' and 'Komm schon'. There is further emphasis on production now though which intensifies the electro side of the music with impressive visuals and fast paced lighting displays. The whole crowd is incredibly excited before they close on a double hit of 'Bon Voyage' and 'Remmidemmi'. After twenty top quality songs the crowds cheer in mass approval of this awesome outfit.

Great concert. Band was very energetic and the show included a lot of interaction with the audience. In the second half of the concert the songs became faster and so became the movement of the crowd. I don't like the location that much as the acoustic is not so great and they seemed to have some logistic challenges as their were long queues everywhere. Still a great party and a super concert.

Biography - Deichkind

Wenn Deichkind die Bühne betreten, gibt es kein Halten mehr: Der musikalische Ursprung der Hamburger Formation mag im deutschsprachigen Hip-Hop liegen, doch ihr Stil entwickelt sich im Laufe der Bandgeschichte zu einem ebenso experimentellen wie unverkennbaren Mix aus Rap und Elektropunk-Einflüssen. Ein Konzertbesuch verspricht pure Ekstase.

Berauschender Eskapismus: Deichkind-Shows sind buchstäblich der Wahnsinn

Schrill, laut, bunt und ungehemmt: Deichkind stehen für künstlerische Eskalation in Reinkultur und Entertainment ohne Anschnallgurt. Die stark vom Hip-Hop geprägten 1990er-Jahre legen den musikalischen Grundstein für ein Bandprojekt, das die deutsche Musikszene seither immer wieder aufs Neue ordentlich durchrüttelt: 1997 wird Deichkind aus der Taufe gehoben.

Die Verwandtschaft zum deutschsprachigen Rap legt die Band im Laufe ihrer Entwicklung niemals ganz ab. Während die Fangemeinde stetig anwächst, experimentieren Deichkind jedoch ordentlich mit allem, was Spaß macht .

Laut, unberechenbar, unaufhaltsam: Für eine Show von Deichkind die passenden Worte zu finden, ist nicht ganz einfach. Vor riesenhaften, beweglichen Bühnenkulissen und in schriller Kostümierung ist die Band voll in ihrem Element und liebt es, Grenzen auszutesten und Dingen einfach ihren Lauf zu lassen.

Bei ihren „Kindergeburtstagen für Erwachsene“, wie sie selbst ihre Konzerte bezeichnen, ist alles erlaubt und nichts unmöglich. Hauptsache, die Hütte brennt und „Krawall und Remmidemmi“ regieren. Der mitreißenden Eigendynamik einer Deichkind-Show kann sich niemand entziehen.

Deichkind: eine kreative Explosion

Welcher Zeitpunkt, wenn nicht ein neues Jahrtausend, ist der ideale, die Musikwelt aufzumischen? Mit ihrem Debütalbum „Bitte ziehen Sie durch“ im Jahr 2000 werden Deichkind buchstäblich über Nacht zum „neuen heißen Scheiß“ der deutschen Musiklandschaft und beleben den deutschen Hip-Hop mit ihrer Unvorhersehbarkeit.

Nahezu jede ihrer Singles pumpt sich mit treibendem Beat und gewandtem Wortwitz in die Köpfe der Nation – und haben sich die absurden Zeilen der Kombo dort erst einmal festgesetzt, ist es schwer, sie wieder los zu werden.

Großen Erfolg haben Deichkind mit ihrem 2012 erschienenen Album „Befehl von ganz unten“, das in Deutschland bis auf Rang 2 der Charts steigt. Mehrere Singleauskopplungen schaffen es in die Top 100, darunter „Bück dich hoch“ und „Leider geil“. Eine der erfolgreichsten Single-Auskopplungen von Deichkind ist der Song „Remmidemmi (Yippie Yippie Yeah)“ vom 2006 erschienenen Album „Aufstand im Schlaraffenland“.

Im Laufe ihrer Bandgeschichte erhalten Deichkind viele Auszeichnungen, darunter zum Beispiel den Preis für Popkultur, unter anderem in den Kategorien „Beeindruckendste Live-Show“, „Lieblingsvideo“ und „Lieblingslied“.

Irre, tanzbar und alles andere als Mainstream: Deichkind drehen auf

Mit einer großzügigen Dosis elektronischer Einflüsse vollziehen Deichkind im Laufe der 2000er-Jahre den endgültigen Wandel von der Rap-Formation zur Electropunk-Kombo . Mit dem plötzlichen Tod von Produzent Sebastian Hackert im Jahr 2009 erlebt die Crew einen Schicksalsschlag, doch obwohl der Verlust des Freundes schwer wiegt, machen Deichkind weiter und behalten ihre lebensbejahende Einstellung bei.

Neben Kryptik Joe und Sebastian „Porky“ Dürre in der Rolle der MCs drehen inzwischen Henning Besser alias DJ Phono alias La Perla als künstlerischer Kopf der Deichkind-Touren und Roland „ROY“ Knauf als Produzent an den Reglern des Erfolgs.

Eine einzigartige, ungenierte Mischung aus ekstatischen Live-Performances, skurrilen Texten und Musikvideos, die derart schräg sind, dass sie auch als Kunstprojekt durchgehen könnten, zementiert den Kultstatus von Deichkind. Deutschlands coolste Partycrew Deichkind geht mit ihrem neuen Album „Neues vom Dauerzustand“ auf Tour 2023 – erfahre hier alles zu den Konzerten.

Kein anderer deutscher Act bringt Konzeptkunst, Popkultur und Sauf-Eskapismus so gut zusammen wie Deichkind . Ihre doppelbödigen Songs zwischen Elektro, Rap und Pop arbeiten sich subtil an der Gegenwart ab, während ihre Liveshows ausgefallene Partys sind. Look und Sound gehen bei ihnen Hand in Hand, und Saufparolen existieren gleichberechtigt neben klugen Gedanken zum Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Natur wie auf einer ihrer neuesten Singles „In der Natur“ . Nun zieht der Deichkind -Zirkus wieder durch Deutschland und sorgt für ordentlich Krawall und Remmidemmi.

Mit „Neues vom Dauerzustand“ hat das Hamburg er Kollektiv um Philipp Grütering alias Kryptik Joe, Henning Besser alias La Perla und Sebastian Dürre alias Porky auch wieder ein neues Album parat, das am 17. Februar erscheint. „Neues vom Dauerzustand“ ist nur bedingt ein klassisches – was das auch immer sein mag – Deichkind -Album. Der fette Sound knüpft an die Vorgänger an, doch inhaltlich entfernt sich die Band zunehmend von der dauerhaften Ironisierung unserer Wohlstandsgesellschaft. Scheint so, als ob Klimakrise, Ukrainekrieg und Pandemie nicht spurlos an Deichkind vorbeigegangen sind. „Wir hatten das Gefühl, dass wir nicht eins zu eins so weitermachen können wie bisher“, sagt La Perla. „Unsere Gespräche drehten sich dann ziemlich schnell um die Frage, welche Inhalte wir mit diesem Album in die Gesellschaft tragen wollten.“

Auch wenn es der Albumtitel vermuten lässt, Deichkind ist einfach keine Band des Stillstandes – das beweisen sie mit ihrem neuen Album erneut. Und auch ihre Liveshows genießen einen außergewöhnlichen Ruf aufgrund ihrer absoluten Unberechenbarkeit. For more than two decades, they have been one of the most successful acts on the German music scene. With their mixture of hip-hop, techno and electropunk, they have shaped their very own, unmistakable style. After the release of their eighth studio album "Neues vom Dauerzustand", Deichkind is now going on tour again - on 22 June 2023, the cult combo will come to the Olympic Hall.

At the end of 2022, Deichkind pre-released "Geradeaus", the second single from their new album "Neues vom Dauerzustand". As with the previous hit "In der Natur", a lonely yodeller on a stand-up board in an endless ocean introduces the song in the official clip - and already sets the visual tone of a weirdly bizarre video along with lyrics that are once again critical of society. Whether it's Mathias Rust's legendary flight to Red Square in Moscow in 1987, the container freighter "Ever Given" stuck in the Suez Canal, or a transverse mobile home in a narrow side street: you don't have to interpret much into it to realise that a blind "straight ahead" can often lead astray and into a dead end.

"Neues vom Dauerzustand" is now the eighth studio album by Philipp Grütering aka Kryptik Joe, Sebastian "Porky" Dürre and creative mastermind Henning Besser, also known as La Perla or DJ Phono, after a four-year break since "Wer sagt denn das" (2019). The tour for their new release will also take Deichkind to Munich on 22 June 2023. For all fans, it's then: straight ahead to the Olympic Hall. In this case, it's definitely the right direction.

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
