Everything you need to know about 'Jagged Little Pill' on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre

Here's all you need to know about the Alanis Morissette musical on Broadway.

Tom Millward

Released in June 1995, "Jagged Little Pill" made a household name of Alanis Morissette, earning her the title of the best-selling international debut artist in history. Now, over two decades later, that same album is the inspiration for a new Broadway musical and we've fallen "Head Over Feet" for it. Following a record-breaking, out-of-town try-out at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the summer of 2018, Jagged Little Pill began previews at the Broadhurst Theatre on Broadway on November 3, 2019, ahead of an official opening on December 5.

Jagged Little Pill is a raw, edgy, topical, and by no means difficult to swallow. Find out more about  Jagged Little Pill  on Broadway.

What's the story of Jagged Little Pill?

Jagged Little Pill is not a bio-musical about Alanis Morissette. It tells the original story of The Healys; a family in crisis. Set in Connecticut, we meet Mary Jane (aka MJ), her husband Steve, her star pupil son Nick (who has just been accepted to Harvard), and her adopted black daughter Frankie. The picture-perfect family, however, might not be as squeaky-clean as it seems and soon the cracks begin to show.

As MJ's addiction to pain killer medication spins out of control and her estranged relationship to 'workaholic' Steve deteriorates even further, Frankie has to deal with her own racial identity crisis (as well as a tricky love triangle between her best friend/lesbian lover Jo and new boy at the school, Phoenix) and Nick witnesses the rape of his schoolmate Bella, failing to intervene and sending him cascading into a world of guilt. As The Healys begin to accept that life doesn't always have to be perfect, they must look to each other to heal the wounds that threaten to tear them all apart.

Who was in the original cast of Jagged Little Pill on Broadway?

Almost the entire principal cast of Jagged Little Pill has been together since the 2017 workshop of the musical; they all originated their respective roles at the American Repertory Theater in 2018. Elizabeth Stanley originated the role of Mary Jane Healy, with Derek Klena as Nick and Celia Rose Gooding as Frankie. Sean Allan Krill played Steve, with Kathryn Gallagher as Bella, Lauren Patten as Jo and Antonio Cipriano as Phoenix.

Why should I see Jagged Little Pill on Broadway?

In a five-star review of  Jagged Little Pill  for New York Theatre Guide , "this story is not that of one generational thread. It is a visceral woven tapestry of the kids we made... the artistry of Morissette is magnified."

Jagged Little Pill triumphs as a true ensemble piece, showcasing its entire company of gifted performers. There is also a hint of nostalgia in the Broadhurst Theatre. Many of us were deeply impacted by the "Jagged Little Pill" album back in the 1990s and one gets the sense that many audience members bring their own memories and associations with Morissette's work into the theatre with them. The emotional reaction to certain musical numbers is palpable.

It's not just the "Jagged Little Pill" album tracks that have made the cut - other Alanis songs such as "Hands Clean," "That I Would Be Good," "Uninvited," and "Thank U" also play major roles in the musical.

Director Diane Paulus and choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui have staged Jagged Little Pill  ingeniously, transforming the production into a living, breathing organism. The interpretive dance sequences during the gut-wrenching addiction or rape scenes are particularly poignant. There's also excellent moments from the female company members, presenting tough topics in an engaging manner.

Who would we recommend Jagged Little Pill to?

Jagged Little Pill has multi-generational appeal thanks to the multitude of topical issues it explores. Each audience member is likely to relate to at least one of the characters on stage, whether a parent figure or teenager. Due to the production's adult content, we'd give an age recommendation of 16+. It also goes without saying that Morissette aficionados themselves are likely to be crying "Thank U" for years to come.

Alanis Morissette Musical Jagged Little Pill Played Final Broadway Performance

Jagged Little Pill , the Broadway musical featuring the songs of Grammy winner Alanis Morissette, played its final performance at the Broadhurst Theatre on December 17. Diane Paulus directed the production, which began previews on November 3, 2019 and officially opened on December 5. After the Broadway shutdown, the musical reopened on October 21.

"We are so proud of this extraordinary show, and this extraordinary company, who every night in difficult circumstances, have told the Jagged Little Pill story. This show about healing, human connection, and catharsis, has been a salve to audiences, and to all of us, throughout these trying times," said Jagged Little Pill producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price in a statement. "Yet, the drastic turn of events this week with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant has, once again, changed everything. We are dismayed by what appears to be another substantial public health crisis, and – due to the detection of multiple positive Covid-19 cases within the company—need to prioritize the health and safety of the cast, crew, and entire team working on Jagged Little Pill . In light of the extreme uncertainty ahead of us this winter, and forced to choose between continuing performances and protecting our company, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our doors. We know that the Jagged Little Pill story will continue to be told—and in the new year, will be announcing plans for subsequent productions, building on the show’s triumphant launch in Australia earlier this month. We also hope and intend to find a way to bring this vibrant and vitalizing musical back to the Broadway stage, once the current crisis is past, but at this time we are in the unfortunate position to determine Friday, December 17, 2021 as the final Broadway performance of Jagged Little Pill . There is nothing in the world like live theater. There is no community in the world like this great Broadway family of artists and audiences. We will make it through this, together."

Featuring a Tony-winning book by Diablo Cody with additional music by Glen Ballard, Mike Farrell and Guy Sigsworth, Jagged Little Pill tells an original story about a family grappling with uncomfortable truths about many of the urgent issues deeply affecting our communities and our world today. It is inspired by the themes and emotions laid bare in Morissette's Grammy-winning album, which featured the songs "Ironic," "You Oughta Know," "Hand in My Pocket" and more.

The closing company included  Elizabeth Stanley  and Heidi Blickenstaff as Mary Jane Healy,  Sean Allan Krill as Steve Healy,  Derek Klena as Nick Healy, Lauren Patten as Jo, Kathryn Gallagher as Bella and Morgan Dudley  as Frankie Healy.

The musical won two Tony Awards: for Patten's performance and Cody's book.

Jagged Little Pill featured choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, with musical supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt, scenic design by Riccardo Hernandez, costume design by Emily Rebholz, lighting design by Justin Townsend, sound design by Jonathan Deans and video/projection design by Lucy Mackinnon.

The national tour of “Jagged Little Pill”  might resonate even more strongly when it plays The Bushnell May 9-14 because it’s set in Connecticut.

The musical, with a book by famed indie screenwriter Diablo Cody (“Juno,” “Jennifer’s Body”), puts the album’s songs in the context of a modern family dealing with communication problems, expectations, relationships, addictions and personal trauma. The director is Diane Paulus, whose other Broadway credits include “Waitress” and “Finding Neverland,” as well as noteworthy revivals of “1776,” “Pippin” and “Hair.”

“The show is about this family which may look like a normal family, but when you look through the cracks there are these deep-rooted struggles they have to overcome,” said Dillon Klena. He plays Nick Healy, a Harvard-bound high school student who’s spent his life living up to his parents’ expectations while not considering his own feelings and dreams.

The whole Healy family has personal issues and secrets they are not sharing with each other. The deceptions, and self-deceptions, come to a head through difficult confrontations but also through counseling sessions, confessions and soul-searching.

“Jagged Little Pill,” Klena said, is concerned with recovery and self-awareness. “We want people to feel welcomed. It’s about being comfortable with your own truth.”

He also points out how funny the show can get. “We really play into that ‘90s feel. It’s very grungy, very Alanis Morissette. Diablo Cody is an amazing writer in the dark comedy of it all. There are some very dark issues, but somehow you’ll laugh.”

From left: Heidi Blickenstaff, Allison Sheppard and Jena VanElslander in

Morissette was directly involved with the musical’s creation and remains “a huge advocate for the show,” Klena said. “When the tour started, we worked with her personally and got to ask her questions. We just saw her again in Washington, D.C. a few weeks ago.”

Morissette was in D.C. at the same time, speaking at the Psychotherapy Networking Symposium, and stopped by to see the cast. Her longtime advocacy for mental health issues helped shape the “Jagged Little Pill” musical.

“Jukebox musicals have this stigma of songs just being thrown in there,” Klena said. He said “Jagged Little Pill” stands out in the way it “makes an original story that actually makes sense” out of the album’s songs, but also insists that there is no attempt to fix one certain meaning on the material. He agrees that every listener has their own take on the songs. “Each song can be portrayed differently. When these characters sing them, that’s their interpretation.”

Some songs lead to heightened drama while others are humorously analyzed. “Ironic” is presented in a classroom setting, with students pointing out that the lyrics’ supposed examples of irony don’t in fact fit the dictionary definition of that word.

Besides the songs from “Jagged Little Pill” — one of the bestselling pop albums of all time — the musical also contains songs from other Morissette albums, including “So Unsexy” from “Under Rug Swept” and “That I Would Be Good” from “Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie,” as well as two new songs written expressly for the show.

“Jagged Little Pill” was developed at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Paulus is the artistic director, and opened on Broadway at the end of 2019. Its run was heavily compromised by the COVID-19 pandemic, first by the shutdown of all Broadway theaters just a few months after it opened, then by some COVID outbreaks in the cast once it reopened in 2021.

“This show lived a short time on Broadway. I wish it got the respect it deserves,” Klena said. The tour hopes to remedy that, and also positions “Jagged Little Pill” for a healthy afterlife when the performance rights are eventually made available to college theaters, regional theaters and community theaters.

There have been a few minor revisions to the script, as often happens when a Broadway show heads out on tour and the creators can revisit it. The biggest difference between the New York production and the tour, Klena said, is the technical design, which is understandably not as elaborate.

When the tour began, Paulus sat the actors down and explained each character in the show, what they are trying to portray and how they are trying to move forward,” Klena said.

Klena has been on the “Jagged Little Pill” tour since it began in July and hopes to stay with it as long as it lasts. He said many in the cast are “kind of really young, experiencing the journey of a tour for the first time together. Growing up, I never thought I’d do a tour. There’s a lot of self-care involved, but the pros outweigh the cons. I’ve never made it to this point in my career before. I’m going to hold onto this.”

Klena was born and raised in Los Angeles. If his last name sounds familiar, it’s because his brother Derek Klena was in Hartford in a very different musical about impetuous youthful flings into the unknown, the pre-Broadway try-out of “Anastasia” at Hartford Stage in 2016. It was Derek who originated the role of Nick in “Jagged Little Pill,” which is now played by Dillon.

“I enjoy this show and this character a lot,” Dillon Klena said. “He’s this perfect child who’s never questioned anything and is starting to say ‘I don’t know if this is what I want.’ He’s suffering through these feelings about his identity. People resonate with Nick a lot. They come find me at the stage door after a show and tell me ‘I was just like Nick. Thank you for telling that story.’”

“Jagged Little Pill” runs May 9-14 at The Bushnell, 166 Capitol Ave., Hartford. Performances are Tuesday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. $51.50-$139.50. bushnell.org .

Alanis Morissette musical 'Jagged Little Pill' opens at Kimmel campus this week

The broadway show, which features the hits 'ironic,' and 'you outta know,' will play at the academy of music through jan. 15.

Kristin Hunt PhillyVoice

The cast of 'Jagged Little Pill' performs at the Kimmel Cultural Campus. The Alanis Morissette jukebox musical runs Jan. 3-15.

Alt rocker Alanis Morissette's '90s hits have been transformed into a Tony-winning family drama — and you can see it all at the Kimmel Cultural Campus during early January.

"Jagged Little Pill," a jukebox musical that draws upon Morissette's 1995 album of the same name, will move from Broadway to Philadelphia for a two-week stop on its national tour. The show opens at the Academy of Music on Tuesday, Jan. 3, and runs through Sunday, Jan. 15. Tickets are available every day of the week except Mondays.

"Jagged Little Pill" focuses on the Healey family, consisting of a mom (Mary Jane), a dad (Steve) and two kids (Nick and Frankie). Though they look picture-perfect on the outside, each member is dealing with significant issues, ranging from opioid addiction to sexual assault. Their struggles and healing are scored by Morissette classics like "Ironic," "Thank U" and "You Oughta Know," as well as two new songs written for the show.

While Morissette provides the music (along with producer Glen Ballard), the book was written by Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind "Juno," "Jennifer's Body" and "Tully."

"Jagged Little Pill" opened on Broadway in December 2019, but went on hiatus mere months later due to the outbreak of COVID-19. It reopened in October 2021, but COVID-related cancellations continued, and the show closed permanently on Dec. 17, 2021. During its brief run, the show was praised as " sincere without syrup, rousing and real. "

The Kimmel Cultural Campus will offer a special "Ironic Tonic" for the show run, a $9 cocktail of cinnamon whiskey, maple syrup, cinnamon syrup, club soda and lemon juice.

Tickets are on sale now , ranging from $20 to $119. Before you buy, check out the Broadway cast's Tiny Desk Concert for a sneak preview of the songs.

How ‘The Fall Guy' Landed Taylor Swift and Kiss for its Soundtrack - and the Alanis Morissette Karaoke Moment That Didn't Make the Final Cut

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses plot elements from "The Fall Guy," now playing in theaters.

Long before Taylor Swift embarked on the Eras Tour, director David Leitch and producer Kelly McCormick had the idea to use "All Too Well" as a key moment in "The Fall Guy."

McCormick, a self-professed Swiftie, and Leitch were trying to find a fresh and contemporary song to fit into a particular scene.

In the film, Ryan Gosling plays Colt Seavers, one of Hollywood's top stuntmen. After experiencing an on-set accident, he falls off the grid for 18 months, ghosting aspiring director Jody (Emily Blunt), someone he also happens to be dating. The two awkwardly reunite on the set of her directorial debut, and when they wrap their first day, Colt retreats to his pickup truck reflecting on happier times with Jody.

McCormick thought a Swift song would be perfect for that scene, and even Gosling agreed. The challenge was deciding which one made the best fit. "Taylor's hard to put in a movie because she's a storyteller," McCormick says. "So then putting images on top of the story she's telling when you're listening to every single word is really hard to do."

The lyrics to Swift's 2012 song "All Too Well" evoked exactly what Colt was feeling in that moment – extreme heartbreak. He's someone who has lost it all. As the song plays, Jody catches him singing along. She asks, "Have you been crying to Taylor Swift?" You bet he was.

Though the film is hitting theaters as Swift Mania reaches a fever pitch, it should be noted that scene was written and the rights to the song were secured before the Eras Tour became the hottest concert (and movie) ticket on the planet.

"It happened before the tour frenzy," confirms music supervisor Rachel Levy. With the song being an integral part of the narrative, there wasn't a backup plan in place were Swift to say no. Levy adds, "Taylor is a friend of sync. We haven't had much that's been denied by her. She likes to place her songs in movies, and there was no reason to think that it would be denied."

Elsewhere, the film is filled with banging '80s classics and contemporary hits. The prominent use of the 1979 Kiss song "I Was Made For Lovin' You" came from Leitch, who conceived the idea while driving in the car with McCormick long before they began writing the script.

She wasn't entirely convinced, but Leitch was insistent. "What I liked about Kiss was it was crystallizing the tone of the movie for me, which was equal parts camp and cool," he explains.

The conversation continued through filming and Leitch learned during post-production that Gosling, Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer and (a still-unconvinced) McCormick all rejected the idea of the song.

"I was like, ‘I think you should cut that Kiss out.' Peter Cramer was like, ‘I think you should cut Kiss out,' and Ryan Gosling was like, ‘I don't see Kiss in this thing,'" McCormick says, laughing. So they tried different songs, but nothing seemed to work. "By the end, it was the only thing that tied the whole room together."

"I Was Made For Lovin' You" turned out to be the most challenging for Levy to get clearance for. But in addition to using the track as a needle drop several times throughout the film, composer Dominic Lewis deconstructed the song and integrated it into his theme. Then, singer Yungblud recorded a cover version which plays during an action sequence involving a speedboat.

The result: "I Was Made For Lovin' You" became the beating heart of the film's soundtrack. McCormick laughs, "Everyone is saying, ‘Of course it's Kiss. Of course, it's that song."

Along with other throwbacks like the "Miami Vice" theme (which, along with Colt's treasured "Miami Vice stunt team" jacket is a nod to Leitch getting his start working in stunt shows ), Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" and a karaoke version of Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle," the soundtrack features original songs, including "Unknown Stuntman," Blake Shelton's take on the theme from the 1980s "Fall Guy" TV show.

"Kelly had that connection to Blake, and it was an obvious yes," Levy says. "I can't imagine anyone better to sing and perform a cover of the original theme song, and that was one of the easiest things we did because everyone agreed and was super excited about it."

Levy credits Leitch's love for music in bringing the movie music together. "If you look at his work from ‘Bullet Train' to ‘Hobbs and Shaw,' and ‘Deadpool,' they have big musical moments with character." But when assembling the stunt-tacular soundtrack, a few songs didn't make the final cut.

One song that Levy cleared but wasn't used is Alanis Morissette's scornful anthem "You Oughta Know." It was meant to be another song Jody sings during the film's karaoke scene. She's slowly losing it as, once again, Colt hasn't shown up when he should.

"She's slowly losing it on stage in front of the crew, and she doesn't know what song to sing," McCormick recalls. "[Emily] wrote a letter to Alanis Morrissette begging her for the song, and Alanis who historically never gives it, gave it, and we don't use it."

Indeed, the musical moment landed on the cutting room floor as the filmmakers trimmed the runtime down to 126 action-packed minutes. Maybe it'll appear on "The Fall Guy" (David's Version)(From the Vault)…

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
