Options for Bollywood Tours in Mumbai

Take a Bollywood Tour or Be a Bollywood Exrtra

Mumbai is the center of India's booming "Bollywood" film industry. Over 100 films are produced each year there. It's possible to take a Bollywood tour to the heart of the action in Film City. If you'd rather be a Bollywood extra in a movie than simply see the set of one, that's possible too. Here's how​

Overview of Film City in Mumbai

Film City was built by the Maharashtra state government in 1978 to help the Bollywood film industry and provide facilities for it to flourish. The sprawling complex covers nearly 350 acres and comes fully equipped with almost 20 indoor studios, as well as outdoor settings for filming. Film City is located in the western Mumbai suburb of Goregaon -- in the vicinity of the secluded and lush Aarey Colony on the outskirts of Sanjay Gandhi National Park . It's easily accessible from the Western Expressway. Unfortunately, Mumbai Film City isn't open for public admission unless special prior approval is obtained. However, it is possible to take a guided tour there.

Options for Guided Tours

The official tour of Film City is a two hour guided bus tour, operated by Mumbai Film City Tours in conjunction with the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation. The tour visits various locations in Film City. If you're keen on seeing a live shooting, you could be disappointed though. You may be lucky to get a glimpse from the bus if there's one happening. (You're not allowed to get off the bus, which is a drawback). There are six tours per day, as follows: 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., 12.30 p.m. to 2.30 p.m., 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m., and 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. The cost is 599 rupees per person for Indians and $49 per person for foreigners.

Mumbai Film City Tours also conducts a Live Show Tour that focuses on the live shooting of a TV serial and visits the set. You'll be able to see the actors working on the set and have your picture taken with them. The tour runs daily from 4 p.m. to 5.30.p.m. The cost is 1,600 rupees per person for Indians and $49 for foreigners.

There are a few private tour operators that provide dedicated Bollywood tours. These are comprehensive tours that cater predominately to foreigners.

One of the best is Bollywood Tours , which was established in 2003. Their full-day Film City and Bollywood Tour also includes a drive past Bollywood stars' homes and a visit to a shooting studio (as well as the two-hour Film City bus tour mentioned above). The company also offers full-day Bollywood Tours and half-day Bollywood Tours that visit shooting studios, a dubbing studio, and include a Bollywood dance show and drive past stars' homes. The Bollywood Tours can be combined with Dharavi slum or city sightseeing. 

No Footprints also offers this fun half-day Mumbai Dream Tour that incorporates Bollywood dance workshop, short screening of a Bollywood movie, a visit to a film studio to see a live shoot, and a visit to a sound recording studio.

Film Cities in Other Locations

Film cities can also be found in Noida (not far from Delhi), Hyderabad, and Chennai. Noida Film City has over 25 acres of indoor and is used mostly for making TV serials, news, and current affairs programs. Chennai Film City is home to the Tamil movie industry. The public can enter for a small fee, and there's an amusement park to keep the kids entertained. Hyderabad's Ramoji Film City is a huge tourist destination spread over 2,500 acres. It boasts of being the world's largest production complex and it's possible to take a special tour.

How to Be a Bollywood Extra

If you'd rather be in a Bollywood movie than simply see the set of one, that's possible too. Foreigners are always in demand to be extras in Bollywood movies. The easiest way to make it happen is to hang around Colaba Causeway in Mumbai, particularly in the area around Leopold's Cafe, and you're sure to be approached to be an extra. Sonu Nigam mesmerises Moscow; won over by Russia

Sonu Nigam’s first visit to Russia proved to be a memorable occasion for both the Indian singing sensation and his fans and admirers in the country. 

Performing in Moscow was like a dream come true for the artist. “From my childhood my siblings and I were told by our parents that Russia is our friend, and we have a great love for Russia,” Nigam told RIR in an interview. The country definitely won over the artist. “The bigness, the warmth of the people, the history, and the rich legacy is what I liked about this country.  I have explored a lot of countries. But this is the first time I came to the country where I had to buy extra two bags to fit all the gifts from my Russian fans.”

Sonu Nigam's visit to Moscow was arranged by the Overseas Bihar Association (OBA), a non-commercial socio-cultural organization of Indians established in May, 2012 in Moscow to promote Indian culture through its different activities.

Last year it organised a celebration to mark 100 th anniversary of the foundation of the Indian state of Bihar. Bollywood singer Alka Yagnik, Bhojpuri singer Devi Verma and the winner of K for Kishore, Chetan Rana performed in a concert in Moscow to mark the occasion.

This time a large audience of fans, both Russians and Indians, turned up at the prestigious Crocus City Hall for the concert on a warm summer afternoon.Many Russians in the crowd were dressed in traditional Indian clothes, with some fans making the long trip from St Petersburg just to watch the concert. 

In keeping with Russian concert traditions, fans went up to the stage to hand over bouquets and other gifts. A teary-eyed admirer gave the star a Matryoshka and tried to teach him how to pronounce the Russian word for doll (kukla), which Sonu repeated almost without an accent.

“I was truly overwhelmed,” he says adding that he observed the Indian attire of the Russian fans who knew his songs. “For me music is not just profession, it’s a state of mind. So when you see your art and your work appreciated by people from so far, they don’t understand your language, you don’t understand their language.” Describing the love he received from the Russian fans, Nigam said he felt “indebted” to them. “So I have become more of a fan of Russian people than they can ever be of me.”

It’s not just gifts and warm memories that the singer wants to take back to India.

“My doors are open for any composer and any producer from Russia, he said adding that some of the greatest composers are from Russia. “I want to take Russian music to India and to share this soulful music with Indians.”

At the Moscow concert, he performed a lot of well-known film songs, including “Dil mangta hai dildar soniye” (from Mujhse Shaadi Karoge), “Kal ho na ho” and “Kiska hai yeh tumko.” All this to the delight of the audience! The high point of the concert was Sonu’s singing the song "Abh Mujh mein kahi" from Agneepath. He said this song is like a prayer to him and he only performs it for very special audience.

Cultural ambassador for Russia

Sonu Nigam’s visit and impressions may just be what is needed to boost cultural ties between the two countries and bring Bollywood film crews to Russia. “You know, two days back I was using whatsapp and I told my friend who is a very big director in India (Mani Ratnam) that he must come to Moscow and make a film here,” Nigam said. “This place should be more explored by Indians! I am already making Moscow popular in twitter. Everybody who follows my tweets knows:  he is in Moscow and he’s enjoying it there. (laughs) So hopefully many more Indians will come to Russia after reading that.” 

At one point during the concert, Sonu brought his son Nevaan on the stage and they danced together to Kolavari Di.  At the August 10 concert, the singer, who has strong family values, also paid an emotional tribute to his mother who passed away recently and appealed to the audience to spend as much time as possible with their parents. “10 th is a very special date for me because it is my mother’s birthday and I lost my mother just a couple of months back. I am taking a lot of “Ms” with me now. “M” for mother, “M” for music, “M” for Moscow, “M” for memories. I hope this “M” for Moscow is not the last for me.”

A new snack spot is now open at Muppets Courtyard! Ice Cold Hydraulics offers fun bites like cinnamon rolls, churros, and frozen slushies.

For fans of the Muppets , there’s perhaps no better area of the resort to visit than the Muppets Courtyard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While not the only part of Disney World featuring the group, it does serve as the largest dedicated area to the gang. Here you’ll find the Muppets 3-D attraction and PizzeRizzo, a quick service spot run by none other than Rizzo the Rat. And now, a new snack spot has joined the area!

Ice Cold Hydraulics Open at Muppets Courtyard

Disney Eats Instagram shared the news that the new location has opened at Muppets Courtyard! Ice Cold Hydraulics offers a variety of delicious treats and drinks for guests to enjoy.

Among the menu options, these are available:

• Candy Painted Cinnamon Rolls: Mini cinnamon rolls topped with Coca-Cola-infused glaze and toasted nuts
