13 Absolute Best Food Tours In New Orleans

tourists eating New Orleans background

The city of New Orleans can best be described as a food lover's paradise. Its rich and cultured past has paved the way for an eclectic and diverse food scene to rival all others in the country. In the Big Easy, everything is iconic, from fresh seafood out of the Gulf Coast to delicious drinks that fuel the festivities and sweet treats that many tourists travel far and wide to sample. The city's unique blend of cultures gives rise to exclusive dishes, drawing visitors from across the globe to savor unforgettable cuisine and create lasting memories.

When visiting a new city, it's often wise to let a tour guide tote you around to the most serene, signature spots on your checklist. When New Orleans is the destination, tourists should never leave before booking a food tour to open their eyes to tastes outside the tourist district. We all know to indulge in cajun gumbo and beignets. However, lesser-known New Orleans classics like hearty red beans and rice and yakamein soup are often overlooked by travelers. A food-focused tour ensures a taste of the renowned favorites of the city, while unveiling hidden gems beyond the staples of The French Quarter, where authentic Cajun and Creole flavors come to life. Using personal experience and research methods, this list sums up the best food tours to make your New Orleans vacation unconventional and, therefore, spectacular.

Doctor Gumbo

Ever been on a boring tour? Doctor Gumbo Tours  implore guests to forget their preconceived notions about standard tours, with bored, blasé tour guides reading off lists and going through the motions. Doctor Gumbo boasts "a cure for the common tour" with food-focused walking tours that are designed to be both fun and informative. Meet new friends and explore the ins and outs of the most vibrant city in America. Whether you choose the food history tour or strictly cocktails while you walk along the streets of New Orleans' revered French Quarter, you're in for an experience that will have you swooning over the Big Easy.

Doctor Gumbo's food history tour allows visitors to dine in five iconic New Orleans locations, including some centuries-old establishments that are household names in the city. You'll discover dishes like seafood-rich gumbo, savory boudin balls, and the best muffuletta in Nola . Enjoy your leisurely stroll through the city streets, enjoying jazz performances and exploring various restaurants. There are plenty of opportunities for candy shop stops and hot sauce store tours so that you can pick up some classic New Orleans souvenirs along the way.

Sidewalk Food Tours

Food is the name of the game for Sidewalk Tours . The company specializes in a variety of food-themed tours to accommodate all visitors. Learn about the neighborhoods of The French Quarter and the Lower Garden District while you sample the flavors that put the city on the map as a culinary hotspot. Sidewalk tour guides are friendly and laidback, so instead of feeling like a structured tour with a strict itinerary, this experience is more like a casual stroll through a beautiful city that leaves guests with a full belly and fond memories to last a lifetime.

Choose whether you'd like to explore The French Quarter or the less famous but equally impressive Lower Garden District with Sidewalk tours. For The Quarter tour, choose five locations, including Leah's Pralines — arguably the best place for iconic sweets in New Orleans — and Felix's Oyster Bar, where you can sample freshly shucked oysters fresh from the Mississippi River. Opt for the Garden District tour to explore locations such as the famous sandwich shop Turkey and the Wolf and Juan's Flying Burrito, the world's first Creole taqueria. Sidewalk Tours also offers private and corporate tours.

Let a bona fide local tote you around the Garden District with Bon Moment tours. Whether you'd like a guided bar crawl or a tour that will satiate your appetite, Bon Moment is an ideal choice for a small group looking for an intimate, in-depth New Orleans culinary experience. This tour focuses heavily on small businesses, meaning you might sacrifice stops at some famous chains. Still, in exchange, you'll be supporting the local economy of the city you've been longing to visit.

Bon Moment's tour guide will educate you on the history of the neighborhoods that you're touring before and after you indulge in some iconic NOLA food and beverages. Take the company's Bywater food and drink tour to do New Orleans like a local. Drink in a dive bar and grab po '  boys at the corner deli while you admire street art and listen to live music in this up-and-coming part of town. Bon Moment also offers tours of The Garden District and a nightlife tour on Frenchman Street, where you can party like the locals do.

Guided Underground Donut and Beignet Tour

Those who are unfamiliar with the city may not think of donuts and sweet treats when they think about the culinary scene of New Orleans (usually fishy food and booze are what come to mind). But locals know all too well the addictive nature of New Orleans-style beignets and other soft and sugary NOLA treats. On the  Guided Underground  donut and beignet tour, you'll get to indulge in a different way than everyone else partying in the French Quarter on Fat Tuesday. Guided Underground's tour takes visitors through the neighborhoods of Magazine Street — an area to explore that tourists don't often add to their itinerary. Yet for New Orleans locals, Magazine is the go-to spot for culinary delights, refreshing drinks, lively parties, and an all-encompassing good time.

On the tour, you'll visit four pastry shops, enjoying the best beignets the city has to offer with a cup of chicory-laced café au lait in hand. You'll try the classics as well as seasonal donuts loaded with local ingredients unique to the city. The tour promises to finish with a fun surprise, so book this distinguished food tour on your next New Orleans excursion to enjoy something off the beaten path.

New Orleans Secrets

So you've tried gumbo, beignets, and rum-rich hurricanes — now what? There's a lot more to the New Orleans foodie scene than just the classics that we can all name off the top of our heads. New Orleans Secrets aims to shed some light on the lesser-known delights that the city has to offer and leave the gumbo to the novices. The company's Magazine Street Foodie Tour  includes six stops with seven menu items to enjoy. The experience is anything but a tasting tour and more like a full day of indulgence. You can certainly check this eclectic meal off as one of the best you'll ever have in New Orleans and beyond.

The New Orleans Secrets foodie tour leaves guests in suspense by staying true to its name and keeping the restaurants a surprise until the tour begins. So for an adventurous foodie who loves to throw all caution to the wind and embrace a mouth-watering, savory meal in any and all forms, this tour is a must-experience. Guests will stroll for a half mile down Magazine Street, enjoying the sights, sounds, and — most importantly — flavors of the city.

Destination Kitchen

Considered one of the best in the Crescent City, Destination Kitchen offers tours to suit any group. Whether you're on a cocktail-laden girl's trip or a family-friendly vacation, a culinary tour by Destination Kitchen will please everyone in your group by showcasing the best of the best in New Orleans cuisine. Amble through The French Quarter during Destination Kitchen's walking food tour, perfect for first-time visitors. On this tour, you can sample gumbo and other iconic dishes, as well as "make groceries" (otherwise known as "shop for tasty treats" in New Orleans language). This tour includes a stop at the city's famous French Market, where you can choose any seafood meal you can fathom and grab a cold beverage to ease the sticky Louisiana heat.

For a more intimate and unconventional experience, opt for Destination Kitchen's walking tour and cooking class. At nearly six hours, this tour turns the culinary world of New Orleans into a fun day of gastronomic bliss. Visit the most famous eateries in the city and learn about their impact on New Orleans culture, all while sampling beloved dishes. Then, enjoy an entertaining and informative cooking demonstration at the New Orleans Cooking School, complete with a full lunch.

Taste of Nawlins

Let Taste of Nawlins  take you on an educational epicurean excursion through the French Quarter. Don't let the quirky phonetic spelling in this tour's name fool you — the company promises to take you and your guests on a dignified journey through the famed culinary landscape of New Orleans as it was meant to be experienced. You'll learn the history of iconic dishes like jambalaya and gumbo , as well as the story behind the historical buildings that line the streets of The Quarter. On this tour, you'll meet the locals who keep New Orleans's food scene alive and thriving, providing a hearty dose of sweet Southern culture to accompany the savory meals you'll enjoy.

If you're after a tour that offers a little something beyond the classics, take the Taste of Nawlins breakfast tour. On this excursion, you'll start your day with a full New Orleans-style breakfast in a popular restaurant on Decatur Street before you head out for an early morning educational adventure. You'll learn about food, architecture, and the French history that made this Gulf Coast cuisine among the most revered in the country.

The Premier New Orleans Food Tour

Lead by two New Orleans locals with a fiery passion for The Big Easy's eclectic charm, the Premier New Orleans food tour is sure to impress even the pickiest of palettes. Naif and Sandy — two lifelong Louisiana residents — will be your knowledgeable and quirky guides on the culinary circuit. Both Naif and Sandy are former educators and cooking aficionados, making them the perfect guides for those who want to learn about New Orleans food history with delightful Southern friendliness.

The Premier New Orleans French Quarter tasting tour leads guests along the historical streets to taste the best po' boys in New Orleans — stuffed with meat or seafood and dressed to the nines — all while learning the myriad differences between Cajun and Creole cuisine. Tour five different locations in the French Quarter at a leisurely pace while your guide answers any questions you may have about the food or historical sites that you'll visit. The Premier New Orleans Food Tour offers tours for small and large groups, as well as private tours.

Intrepid Urban Adventures

Intrepid Urban Adventures  employs a network of tour guides all over the world to host food-centric and other themed excursions in cities spanning every continent. In New Orleans, Intrepid Urban Adventures hosts a small tour that brings out the foodie in every Big Easy visitor. Meet your tour guide at Jackson Square, and then stop at four mouth-watering stops in the French Quarter. On this tour, the more famous eateries are cast aside in favor of New Orleans's hidden gem establishments. Enjoy dishes from restaurants that tourists otherwise would overlook if not for a knowledgeable, local guide to show them how to eat like a resident in The Quarter.

Intrepid Urban Adventures tour guides are full of energy and dedication to their city, and their passion is reflected in their tour. You'll learn historical facts about the French Quarter that many locals aren't even aware of. Even if you've lived in NOLA all your life, this tour makes for a worthwhile adventure for anyone who wants to learn about the famous heart of New Orleans while enjoying some unconventional eats.

Tastebud Food Tours

Whether you're on the hunt for a taste of the best seafood in the city, a strong and refreshing cocktail, or the most iconic flavors of Cajun and Creole cuisine, Tastebud Tours has you covered. The company offers seven distinct food tour options, as well as options for private tours and large group tours. Learn to craft three famous New Orleans cocktails and discover the history behind them with Tastebud Tour's cocktail class. Or, tour the famous foods of the French Quarter and enjoy a boozy bourbon brunch followed by a bourbon-focused cocktail class.

We recommend a seafood-centric tour that showcases the best fish dishes in the city. Visit the Court of Two Sisters, famous for its enticing brunch offerings and lively jazz accompaniment. You'll stop at Cornet Restaurant, home of the largest balcony in The Quarter, perfect for celebrating Mardi Gras and treating yourself to some fresh and steamy crawfish étouffée. Next, you'll visit New Orleans Creole Cookery, a NOLA staple offering chargrilled oysters and shrimp remoulade. These restaurants are steeped in history and contribute to the diverse culture that makes New Orleans such an enticing spot for travelers.

Nola Detours

Nola Detours  boasts off-the-beaten-path sightseeing — a tempting option for travelers who want to experience a city in all its glory. The company hosts backstage music tours, sight-seeing drives, haunted tours, and, most importantly, culinary excursions. Embark on a cocktail tour as you take in the view of the centuries-old city from the rooftop bar of the esteemed Royal Orleans Hotel — an experience that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on every newcomer to New Orleans.

Choose Nola Detours' street food tour, where you'll be led to low-key spots that are usually only frequented by locals. Here, you can get the real Nawlins treatment. Experience some of the most authentic cuisine in the city, including a stop where guests can try alligator meat — a Louisiana delicacy . The tour is led by a former New Orleans restaurant owner, so you know you're getting first-hand knowledge and experience on the bayou fare that makes New Orleans a coveted culinary haven. As you scour the streets in anticipation of the next delicious treat, you'll visit the famous St. Louis Cathedral and other historical sites to check off your travel itinerary.

WeVenture Taste of Gumbo

If there's one dish in New Orleans that deserves a tour solely in its honor, it's gumbo. WeVenture  offers tours in top urban destinations around the country, including a New Orleans culinary tour with a heavy focus on the rich, savory, and controversial dish native to the distinctive city. No two gumbos are alike, which is why on this tour, visitors experience several variations of the acclaimed dish. Experience fresh seafood and veggies melded together thanks to an expertly prepared roux accompanied by a hearty scoop of rice, making it filling enough to grant it dinner status. You can then decide for yourself if you're team tomato in gumbo or prefer to pass on the tart flavor, and whether you prefer a light or dark roux .

On The Taste of Gumbo Tour, you'll meet your guide in Jackson Square and stroll through the French Quarter sampling various gumbos, each with a distinct style and made with different meats and seafood. Discover each immigrant culture's contributions to the gumbo recipe that we know and love today, and learn about all of the different styles of the dish throughout history. New Orleans's storied past is reflected in this iconic dish, so let WeVenture be your gourmet gumbo guru on this French Quarter quest.

New Orleans School of Cooking

Our list concludes with an unconventional and compelling tour experience. Learn to cook Louisiana's renowned dishes under the tutelage of skilled chefs. Fueled by a passion for the Cresent City and a love for the bounty of the Gulf Coast, the chefs of the New Orleans School of Cooking  delight in educating and entertaining tourists. You'll be given a brief history of the city as well as a list of fun facts and tidbits about the food before you witness it come to life before your eyes.

New Orleans School of Cooking offers cooking demonstrations where guests can witness first-hand the skill and expertise required for crafting NOLA's favorite dishes. For a more hands-on experience, guests can opt for a cooking demonstration and class. Here, you'll get to prepare from scratch a New Orleans staple meal with a highly skilled chef by your side to guide you through the fun and informative journey. After the class, sit down and enjoy a family-style meal over chatter about the New Orleans experience. This culinary adventure is bound to leave a lasting impression. Now that you've obtained the skill necessary to cook top-tier Louisiana fare, you can prepare the perfect meals for Mardi Gras back home to impress friends at a NOLA-themed party.

Ayesha was a great tour host, she provided a ton of details about the history of LV as well as info about places to check out while we were here. Ayesha gave us recommendations that were catered to what she thought we would like. The food was great and we loved everything, wasn’t too much for us although we felt like we needed a nap halfway through! Thank you for all the info and for Ayesha’s great energy!

This has to be the best food tour I could’ve ever hoped for. This tour was the real deal, seemingly much better than the other ones I’ve seen advertised for 2-3x the price. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, and I will definitely use this company again personally! Thanks for the memories, Taste Buzz!

A Top NYC Food Tour on TripAdvisor

tripadvisor logo

My boyfriend and I decided to take a food tour of Chinatown and Little Italy to try some new foods and learn about the culture/ history of these neighborhoods and Hannah did not disappoint! As a picky eater, this was a great way to open up a bit more while learning + sightseeing the area. Hannah provided great insight into how these neighborhood + cuisine developed, answered tour and non-tour related questions, and made this a great experience for us. You could tell Hannah truly enjoys sharing this experience and I would recommend this to tourist and locals alike!

A wonderful experience with great food, lots of history, and fun! Shout out to our guide Lily who absolutely made the experience. She was knowledgeable and added lots of fun to the tour!! 11/10, would recommend and even more so if Lily is the guide!!

This tour is amazing. Liz, our guide, was very personable and knowledgeable. We had an array of delicious food from various ethnicities (and plenty to fill you up). We enjoyed learning the history of Nolita and walking around to see it. I also love this is a woman owned small business. I highly recommend the tour!

Liz S was amazing and a great tour guide! She gave the history and information about what we were eating and we learned a lot on the trip.

Amazing tour - Maryana was THE BEST. Delicious food and so much history, perfect activity to do with teens.

The tour was amazing! I consider myself a foodie and this met all my needs. Valerie was the BEST tour guide - she is full of energy and made the entire tour so much fun. I asked what other tours she did just so I can come back! Definitely would recommend 10/10!!

We took 4 food tours while on our trip and this one is by far the best! Patrick was FANTASTIC and got us trying foods that we never would have stumbled upon on our own. We sampled tons of wonderful food and learned so much history about the city. We left full and will definitely do it again next visit!

Visiting Nashville

Nashville is the country music capital of the world, but there is more than country music that gave this bustling city its Music City moniker. Nashville is a worldwide music hub for rock, pop, bluegrass, jazz, classical, blues, soul music, and contemporary Christian music. Music artists like Kid Rock, Bon Jovi, the Blackeyed Peas, and Michael Buble have written and recorded their music here. Visitors can experience this rich history with stops at the Ryman Auditorium and the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as the new National Museum of African American Music.

Nashville is sizzling with a well-earned reputation for amazing food! We're famous for some of the best barbecue on earth, buttery biscuits, and our world-famous Nashville Hot Chicken. In addition to these classic Nashville tastes, the world's hottest chefs are now in Nashville, serving up fresh interpretations to thrill and amaze!

Frequently asked questions

Tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling (615) 800-7052. Cash is not accepted for ticket purchases.

Is parking available near the starting location of the tour?

For the Gulch Tour Parking in Nashville is expensive, but the most affordable parking is typically found along 11th Ave South, between Demonbruen and Division Streets. For convenience and expense, you might consider a car service, depending on where you are staying.

For the Farmers' Market/Germantown Tour The most convenient option might be to use a car service.

We do not have parking at the Farmers Market because it is only 2-hour parking. If you need to drive, you can park at the Goodwill Lifsey Building 937 Herman Street . This link will show you where it is in relation to the Farmers Market. From there walk through the parking garage of the 909 Flats between 9th Ave N and Rosa L Parks, cross Rosa L Parks and then you arrive at the Farmers Market!

Tours are held rain or shine. We do ask that you check the weather forecast and dress appropriately if inclement weather is predicted. In the case of an unusual and severe weather incident, a tour may be canceled for safety.

Restrooms will be available at the beginning and at most locations throughout the tour.

How much walking does the tour involve? What's the pace like?

The tour includes 4-5 food tastings at restaurants and specialty shops, enough for a satisfying meal!

DON’T HAVE TIME TO READ THE WHOLE POST? DON’T WORRY – I’VE GOT YOU COVERED! My Top 3 picks for the best Boston food tours are : 1. North End Pizza & History Food Tour (4.5/5⭐️) 2. North End & Public Market Tour (5/5⭐️) 3. Brewery Tour With Lunch or Dinner (5/5⭐️)

What Food Is Boston Most Famous For?

First thing’s first, it’s a good idea to know what food Boston is most famous for before you decide which tour is best for you. And because it’s a city, you could argue that pretty much all cuisine shines here, but there are definitely two types of food that are going to stand out in Boston:

🍝 Italian and 🦞 Seafood !

Between the 1850s and early 1900s, a large population of Italians immigrated to Boston via the Port of Boston, and many of them settled in the North End. Now, the North End is famous for charming and historic streets, and … you guessed it – Italian food! If you love Italian cuisine, this is where you should go (or take your tour!).

And of course, seafood is another star of the Boston food scene simply because of its location on the coast. Menus all across the city will feature fresh seafood from coastal towns like Wellfleet, Chatham, Ipswich, Nantucket and more . In particular, if you see Wellfleet or Chatham oysters, Nantucket scallops or Maine lobster on the menu, you’ll definitely want to consider ordering those!

Are Boston Food Tours Worth It?

Absolutely! In fact, depending on how long you’re in Boston, it may even be worth it to do 2 tours. A North End tour combined with something different like a scenic food cruise tour, or the fun cooking class would be an amazing way to really get a feel for the culinary scene.

Quincy Market is an awesome place for a Boston food tour, but be sure to head back on your own, too, to sample even more awesome dishes.

Tips For Your Boston Food Tour!

  • Wear comfy shoes! Sneakers will be ideal. Boston is a pretty casual city anyway, and most tours on this list head over to the North End, where there are historic (meaning, uneven!) cobblestone and brick sidewalks. Sturdy and comfy shoes are a must.
  • Come hungry! I know it seems this goes without saying, but most food tours will equal an entire meal. Be sure to read the description to find out how much food you’ll be eating, and come hungry enough for it!
  • Bring a reusable water bottle if your tour doesn’t provide drinks or bottled water. Some do, but it’s best to check and come prepared.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask questions on your tour! The guides are local experts, and they love sharing their knowledge on the food scene in Boston. Don’t hesitate to raise your hand and get all your questions answered. I also highly suggest asking where to eat during the rest of your trip because they’ll have awesome off-the-beaten-path recommendations!

Just on the plane ride home, reflecting on the most amazing trip that we have ever taken.  No doubt one of the absolute top highlights on the trip was spending time with you!  You truly made our experience over the top. We tasted some amazing food, of course, but we also learned so much from you about Florence and Italy overall.  I cannot thank you enough for providing us with an experience we will never forget.

whether you're a foodie or a history buff or both, this is the tour for you!!! i happen to be both, and i really had no idea what to expect when my girlfriend told me she had booked a walking food tour for us while on vacation in gettysburg. our guide lori was punctual, professional, friendly, warm, knowledgeable, and truly went above and beyond to make sure our group had a fantastic time! not only do you get to sample some delicious fare from around the culinary spectrum, you'll also get a brief introduction to the city's history before, during, and after the battle. plus they offer very valuable coupons if you wish to return...in the next year!!! no pressure, just a gracious guide, friendly small business owners, and great food!!!

I highly recommend the downtown Gettysburg food tour with Gayle Underwood. It was a dreary rainy day but it didn't stop the fun. The food at each stop was wonderful and as a former history teacher, Gayle was great providing us with history on the buildings, the civil war, and the eating establishments. The tour was 3 hours long, she was very conscious of time and made sure to keep things moving without rushing us. A person in our group had mobility issues and could not walk too far without stopping to rest and as Gayle knew this ahead of time she timed her history talks to coincide with the rests. If you have food allergies or restrictions you can let them know when you make your reservation. What a fun time!

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this food tour. All of the restaurants produced quality tastings & we were very entertained by the history given by the tour guide Gale. she was very enthusiastic and passionate about about Gettysburg. I've been on lots of food tours and this one is definitely a must do in Gettysburg!

We did the food tour with Kari. It was wonderful. First, the food was brilliant. From tacos to ice cream. There are six different stops from food samples (which are more than just samples; somewhat generous) to drink (I recommend this tour for the over 21 but they can accommodate a non-alcoholic version). The tacos, Shepard's pie, pizza slice and crepe were all delicious. The wine and cider bar was good and Mr G's for ice cream was the perfect finish. Second, Kari was great as our tour guide. Wonderful history oratories as we strolled through Gettysburg. Great stories and very good company. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the tour and believe most people will. A great combination of trying good food and hearing more about the history of the town (not just the battle!).

We had a great day sampling 6 different eating places within walking distance of our hotel. We had Thai, Mexican, Irish and a great farm to table pizza, a sampling of olive oils and ended with ice cream! Don't eat more than toast for breakfast! Everything was great tasting. The guide was gracious and knowledgeable about the people living in Gettysburg during the battle telling stories as we walked. It was a very good experience.

Photo of Kacey M.

Visited Gettysburg for the first time and wanted to get a feel for the area. What better way than a food tour as your guide takes you around to different local cuisines and tells you about the history of the area at the same time. I truly recommend doing this!

Photo of Stacy N.

This tour was fantastic, my husband and I had such a great time the food was amazing, we got to visit new restaurants and got a great history of Gettysburg. Our tour guide, Gayle, made the tour fun with her great personality and it was an overall wonderful experience.

Photo of Amy S.

We had an amazing food tour with Gayle. She was very informative and the tour offered a nice variety of food choices while learning about the history of Gettysburg. Would highly recommend this tour, but definitely come hungry!!

Photo of Christine R.

Allie was a great guide! -- Was nice to get a little history of Gettysburg while walking to each destination. The food was awesome, each stop was something different. It was at a nice pace and I never felt like I was being rushed. Just be sure to do this on the first part of your trip instead of at the end like I did because it would have given us a better idea of the food and other places that Gettysburg has to offer. We had a lot of fun --

Photo of Zelda P.

Alicia was a fun, informative guide. Lots of history mixed in with tastings. Did it on our first day here and it was a good way to get an idea of restaurant options and places to visit.

Asheville Food Bites: Family-owned brewery closes, culinary retreat, weekend food fests

tastings food tours

ASHEVILLE - A family-owned brewery permanently closes; a local restaurant reopens after a kitchen fire; a culinary arts school hosts a seven-day celebration and retreat; and two food and beverage tasting events to put on the weekend calendar.

Now closed: Blue Ghost Brewing Co.

In January, co-owners Zachary and Nicole Horn announced the impending closure of Blue Ghost Brewing Company at 125 Underwood Road in Fletcher.

On July 7, the husband-and-wife team hosted one last hurrah before shuttering the craft beer brewery and taproom.

In March 2016, Zachary Horn and Erik Weber founded the business with Weber departing in 2019.

Zachary Horn said the family-owned and operated brewery lived up to what they envisioned ― a place for community.

“We’ve provided a space for so many people and created so many memories from anniversaries to proposals that have happened here to weddings and retirement. … birthday. … and going away parties. You name it, it’s happened here.”

In that time, customers came to love flagship beers like the Blue Ghost IPA, Laga Light American Golden Ale, Mango IPA and Zachary Horn’s favorite, the Mountain to Sea Double IPA.

Zachary Horn said the community became like family, making closing difficult. After an eight-year run, he and his wife ultimately chose to close the brewery to focus on their two children, ages nine and 13.

“This business, as much fun as it is at times, it’s very demanding on nights and weekends, holidays and summers and that’s all the same time our children are not in school,” Zachary Horn said. “It’s often choosing between family activities versus the brewery.”

He and his wife, who have degrees in biology, plan to become substitute teachers.

Zachary Horn, who used to work at Oskar Blues Brewery, said eventually he’ll get back into homebrewing. He said he was inspired to learn the craft after discovering that his great-great-great grandfather immigrated from Germany during the Civil War Era. He listed his occupation as “brewer” on a Census form.

The Horns still own their Blue Ghost brand and recipes, and he said a revival of Blue Ghost Brewing Co. isn’t out of the question once they become empty nesters.

Zachary Horn said the community’s farewell wishes are appreciated.

“We appreciate that they enjoyed it as we envisioned it. We’re grateful for everyone who came through near and far over the years,” he said.

Zachary Horn said the brewing facility was sold to become a crane and hoist company service center.

He said Blue Ghost employed 18 mostly part-time workers, many who chose to stay with the brewery through closing day. He said the staff was offered thank-you packages, job search assistance and referrals.

Read the Horns’ closing announcement at blueghostbrewing.com .

Now reopened: Stone Ridge Tavern

On June 13, Stone Ridge Tavern’s reopening was announced after a kitchen fire was reported at the restaurant at 1003 Brevard Road on May 29.

For lunch and dinner service hours updates, follow the business on Facebook . View the menus at thestoneridgetavern.com .

Culinary school celebrations

The Quintessential Table is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Seasonal School of Culinary Arts, a program that offers "culinary experiences designed to awaken and broaden the palate" to new and experienced home chefs and professionals, with ticketed events from July 14-20.

Many activities will be at Highland Lake Cove in Flat Rock with hands-on and dining segments at Treska’s Café.

The “Cooking with Consciousness” week-long immersion program will begin with a Bastille Day celebration and continue with multi-course luncheons, tastings, music, contra dancing and self-guided explorations of the grounds, Carl Sandburg Home and downtown Flat Rock and Hendersonville.

Jael Skeffington, founder of French Broad Chocolate, will host a chocolate tasting. Beer, cider and whiskey tastings are on the schedule, too.

Hands-on sessions will feature chefs Mark Rosenstein, Laurie Bakke and Susi Gott Séguret ― a French American chef, author and director of Quintessential Table/Seasonal School of Culinary Arts.

The “Cooking with Consciousness” themed program is designed to teach guests where and how their food is grown, harvested and transported, and how posture, thoughts, movements and intention can create Zen in the kitchen and when dining.

An afternoon tasting session costs $100. A morning and luncheon session costs $200. A full-day admission costs $300. Access to the full week of activities costs $1,500.

Guests are welcome to book a stay on-site at Highland Lake to capture the full serenity of the week.

View the full schedule and register at quintessentialtable.com . For more, contact Susi Gott Séguret at [email protected] or (828) 301-2792.

Foodie events in July

The family-friendly garden tours are free. Tickets for the tasting portions are $40 in advance. An after-party will begin at 6 p.m. at The Odd, a West Asheville bar at 1045 Haywood Road. Also, on July 14, Heritage Fire Tour: Asheville, a national touring food festival celebrating live fire cooking, will be at Horse Shoe Farm, 155 Horse Shoe Farm Drive in Hendersonville. Guests may sample food and beverages from regional and national chefs, restaurants and beverage partners. Wellington about 5 hours ago

Between two breads: a tasting tour of wellington’s best sandwiches.

avatar

  • Share Story

Wellington foodie Bryer Oden aka @healthsensation rates and reviews 10 of the top sandwiches in the capital.

I am a firm believer that sandwiches are at the very base level of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. For children and adults alike, miscellaneous fillings between two slices of bread offer a world of versatility and joy.

Combining my own lived sandwich experience, and the recommendations sent to me via my food Instagram @healthsensation, I set out on a mission to investigate some of Wellington’s most popular sandwiches.

What is a sandwich? The most important defining feature is the exterior: two pieces of bread, or a bun. The filling can be any combination of cheese, vegetables, sauces and protein – whether that is meat or a vegan alternative. I endorse both toasted and fresh sandwiches, to account for all sandwich preferences (which are deeply personal and often weather dependent.) A burger is not a sandwich, nor is a kebab, a souvlaki, or burrito. For the purposes of this search, I also excluded bánh mì (that’s a story for another day).

After weeks of research, some tuna-related duds and gluten-free misadventures, I settled on these top ten picks.

tastings food tours

Specifics: Porchetta & Swiss Cheese Baguette.

Price: $14.50.

State: Toasted.

Claire, it’s French . The Prefab baguette is everything you wish you were. It is humble, concise, elegant, delightful. Dare I say, clean girl aesthetic? This sandwich is an award-winning combination of bread, ham, cheese and mustard. Technically it is not ham but porchetta, which is just ham in disguise. It’s grown-up ham that has a skincare routine and a proper 9-5 job. The mustard itself is the true hero of this sandwich. Honestly, I could drink the stuff.

9. Cozy Cake Shop

tastings food tours

Specifics: Chicken Teriyaki.

Price: $4.40.

State: Fresh.

This sandwich is everything a sandwich should be. Cheap, accessible, portable, fresh and tasty. It’s hard to find a humble bakery that is this level of Tradie Approved ™ in the centre city, but Cozy Cake Shop continues to defy logic and economic trends. Every day it pumps out mountains of medium-quality, affordable tucker. I think almost everyone on earth would be happy to find this sandwich in their lunchbox.  Cost of living crisis 0 – Cozy Cake Shop 1.

tastings food tours

Specifics: Veggie Delite with all salads, no cheese, sweet onion dressing and honey mustard (if you’re that kind of vegan).

Price: $15.70 for a foot long sub.

State: Toasted or fresh.

I searched high and low for a vegan sandwich that would give Subway a run for its money, and I genuinely couldn’t find one. Step up your game, Wellington! There’s a hole in the market. Alas, here we are. I have found the overall quality of Subway to wax and wane throughout the years, but the Veggie Delite is now reliably good. The patty tastes like a falafel and a hash brown had a lovely, oniony baby.

(Please don’t let the fact I am wearing black shatter nail polish à la 2012 in these photos take away from the validity of my opinion.)

7. Squirrel

tastings food tours

Specifics: Focaccia with roast chicken, mesclun, coleslaw and  aioli.

Price: $13.

I went into Squirrel intending to buy the Creamy Maude’s Chicken Sammi with capers, sliced almonds, herbs, rocket and chicken salad. Due to a chicken-related mixup, I accidentally bought the focaccia with roast chicken, mesclun, coleslaw and aioli. I was briefly mad at myself, then not that mad, because the chicken focaccia was gorgeous. Well balanced and flavourful, and the bread had a great chewy and airy texture.

6. Best Wholly Bagels (don’t cyberbully me for this)

tastings food tours

Specifics : Jalapeño bagel with cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, spinach, sprouts, and garlic and herb cream cheese.

Price: $8.90.

State: Fresh.

Does this count as a sandwich? Almost certainly not, but I’m going to break my own rules because it’s worth including due to its high rate of deliciousness. It was a sandwich in its past life. If it weren’t for the hole, we wouldn’t even be questioning it. In Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, the bagel represents Joy’s nihilism, hopelessness, and chaos. In this realm, the bagel represents the strength and fulfilment that regular bread may not bring.

This bagel/sandwich is crisp and juicy and fresh, one of my go-to meals when I am craving a sammie. It is easily more sandwichy than a lot of the toasties masquerading as sandwiches in this city.

5. Shelly Bay Baker on Leeds Street

tastings food tours

Specifics: Prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella, sundried tomatoes, bra duro cheese, basil pesto and green leaves.

Price: $17.

This sandwich was well made. Shelly Bay Baker has perfected its craft. The bread straddled that perfect line of crunchy and soft, and the bread-to-filling ratio was ideal. It was greasy in a fancy way and not in a gross way. It was like a beautiful pizza you could take on the go. However, the $17 price tag stung a bit.

4. romeo’s deli and bar .

tastings food tours

Specifics: Halloumi, spinach, pickled onion and green goddess dressing.

Price: $18.

State: I actually can’t tell.

What’s in a name? That which we call a sandwich by any other name would still taste as savoury. Romeo’s tends to blur the line between sandwich and toastie, but at a certain point, it doesn’t matter. The halloumi sandwich was an absolute delight. The green goddess dressing was a divine mixture of sour cream, chives, chervil, anchovy and chives, with a dash of pickled onion. It reminded me of both Big Mac sauce and hollandaise sauce – creamy and delicious.

I was worried the ingredient list was too minimalist and almost panic-added bacon, but then realised the sandwich alone cost $18. I nearly passed out and decided to refrain. This turns out to be a good thing because it was perfect just the way it was. The bread was warm and soft and the halloumi was squeaky, as God intended.

3. Good Boy Sammies

tastings food tours

Specifics: Weekly menu change (one meat option and one vege option that can be made vegan).

More Specific Than That: Charred broc, green hummus, garlic and lemon.

Price: $14-$16ish.

Bonus points: For running the funniest Instagram account of all time.

Good Boy Sammies started as a hole in the wall and recently moved to a slightly bigger hole in the wall. It goes to show how wildly popular it is, because that is the maximum size of a cafe in Wellington. They throw together two new genius creations every fortnight: one vegan/vegetarian option and one with meat. I got both. On the day I visited, the vege sammie came with charred broc, green hummus, garlic and lemon, and the meat sammie was roast beef with provolone and lettuce. They both were fresh, zesty and delicious. The bread had a certain fluffiness to it that tasted like love.

2. Little Grump

tastings food tours

Specifics: Baked focaccia with prosciutto crudo, shaved ham, rocket and basil pesto, roast red peppers and smoked provolone.

Price: $16.

Bonus points: Comes with ready salted chips and a big juicy pickle. Immaculate meal composition.

Pristine. Godly. Divine. I can’t express how good this sandwich is. If you close your eyes when you eat it, you are transported to a better place, like heaven or Europe. The bread is freshly baked, the combination of prosciutto and ham is inspired, the provolone cheese is smoky and creamy and the freshness of the basil and rocket cuts through the richness. It gives you the experience of putting an entire charcuterie board into your mouth at once, without your friends complaining that you ruined wine and cheese night.

It is also crucial that they serve this with a side of chips and a big, vinegary, juicy pickle. I am tearing up just writing this. They just get it.

1. New World Thorndon

tastings food tours

Specifics: “Deli designer sandwiches”.

Price: $5.49-$8.49.

State: Whatever you could possibly dream of, boss.

Whoever said you shouldn’t play God has clearly never been invested in making the greatest sandwich of all time. A sandwich is a deeply personal meal that reflects the inner state of your mind, stomach, and fridge as a holy trinity.

This sandwich is special because it tastes exactly as if you’d made a sandwich at home, without having to do any of the things that involve making a sandwich at home. If you’ve ever been on holiday and eaten out exclusively for three consecutive days, you know the uneasy feeling that creeps up when your body demands a “normal meal”. This sandwich tastes like getting home after a hard day’s work. Most importantly, it gives you a sense of agency in your day-to-day life. You ARE in control! It’s a fully customisable creation, you just have to hold a clipboard. You are a sandwich artist to be feared and celebrated. This kind of feeling is priceless. 10/10, no notes. The best kind of sandwich is the one made Just. For. You.

Travis and Jason Kelce 'Don't Know Where to Start' When Eating British Food and Reveal Which Dish 'Creeps' Them Out

When Jason and Travis Kelce recorded a special epsiode of their 'New Heights' podcast in London, they tried a full English breakfast, afternoon tea and more delicacies

Travis Kelce took a break from attending girlfriend Taylor Swift ’s London shows to try some British cuisine with his brother.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, and his brother Jason, 36, took their  New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce podcast across the pond and filmed at Passyunk Avenue Bar in London . While at the Philly-inspired dive bar, the NFL stars tasted some classic British dishes – much to picky eater Travis’ disdain.

Right off the bat, Travis was unenthused with the options. “We gotta eat food? I thought we were just drinking English beer,” he quipped.

“They got a full English breakfast for us,” the former Philadelphia Eagles player explained. “We got beans, most importantly. What is it with the beans?”

The father of three couldn’t quite figure out what to do with the spread and wasn’t certain how to eat the beans, but once he sorted it out, he was unimpressed.

“I don’t get the big deal about it,” Jason said. “Yeah, it’s what you think it is. It’s beans and toast. Very bland.”

After that less-than-rave review, Travis seemed even less willing to try it and when asked if he would taste anything on the plate he replied, “No, I think you’re doing great.”

But he changed his tune when trying the blood sausage, which he liked enough to go for a second bite.

“That was pretty good,” Travis admitted and Jason emphasized, “I’m not gonna lie, this is great.”

When presented with the next English dish, the pair were left baffled once again. They hilariously examined a three-tier display of bite-sized foods.

“What do we have here? Can somebody help me out? I don’t even know where to start with this,” Jason said, looking skeptically at the food tower.

“Yeah, how do we even approach this?” Travis added.

Despite being directed to start with the sandwiches, the Kelces were still confused even after taking a bite.

“What is that? Frosting?” Travis asked Jason about the sandwich he took a bite from. Jason informed him it was cheese. “Yeah, I’m not a big cheese guy,” Travis dismissed.

“You don’t like cheese?” Jason asked in a shocked tone. “Who doesn’t like cheese?”

Travis then explained that he can't take the "mushy" texture of goat cheese. “Kinda creeps me out," he said of the sandwich. “Cream cheese is tough [too]. Cheesecake, same thing.”

Next up in the taste-test queue, Travis opted for a blue-colored pastry. “It’s like a dusted macaron,” Jason guessed when looking at it; he, on the other hand, chose a vol au vent.

“Sounds French,” he said while cutting into the egg-filled pastry. “You guys are just stealing stuff from the French? That’s all right, we steal stuff in the U.S. all the time.”

“From everyone,” Travis joked.

Both NFL players liked their choices and immediately praised the two treats, describing them in simple terms.

“Egg salad in a pastry? Sign me up,” Jason said of his choice.

“This was all done up and everything and it’s just like sugar in a croissant,” Travis described his ornate dessert, which was later clarified as a choux pastry.

“Gah, I should have known that from Great British Bake Off ,” Jason said. “Die-hard watcher of that. Great show. It’s one of those shows that Kylie and I just can’t wait for a new season to drop.”

Travis then couldn’t contain his enthusiasm for the warm scones, immediately moaning excitedly when he popped one in his mouth. Jason took his time adding jam and cream, which he mistook for butter.

The brothers were handed petite cups of tea to wash down the towering display of sandwiches and pastries.

“Let’s see what we’re rocking with, see what all the hype’s about,” Travis said about the drink, holding a beat before trying a taste. “Okay, that is still blazing hot.”

“I think you’re supposed to drink it hot, right?” Jason said before scolding his younger brother. “Dude, put your pinky out and do it properly!”

They clinked their cups and took a sip, agreeing that it tasted “lovely.”

“I’m not gonna lie, this is the best tea I’ve had in my f---ing life,” Jason said and Travis agreed, adding, “I’m not gonna lie, tea doesn’t taste like this in America.”

The Kelce brothers recorded the podcast episode on June 22 — the day after Jason and his wife Kylie Kelce attended their first Eras Tour show at Wembley Stadium. The following day, on June 23, Travis made his onstage debut at another night of Swift's Eras Tour shows at Wembley Stadium.

Travis attended all three of Swift's London shows last week and the final show of her three-night Dublin stay on Sunday, June 30.
