Best Experience : Exodus Travels
Courtesy of Exodus Travels
Traveling solo on an Exodus Travels group trip means access to self-guided and guided excursions around the world for every type of traveler. Choose a walking wine holiday in Portugal or explore Egypt via cruise boat and sleeper train, for example. Additionally, its Exodus Edits collection offers shorter itineraries of up to five days and is geared towards travelers in their 30s and 40s—though they’re ideal for anyone looking for more vigorous activity such as ziplining and surfing in Costa Rica or sampling street eats and beach hopping in Sicily.
There is no single supplement fee when you room with a fellow traveler, and chances are you may end up with your own room anyway. Booking a travel itinerary with UK-based Exodus Travels includes a full refund should the company need to cancel your trip and a complimentary trip transfer to another tour or different person up to 21 days before the scheduled trip. Plus, travelers who book their third or more trips with Exodus receive a 5 percent discount on their next booking.
What’s more, the company works to curate trips that align with a number of United Nations sustainable development goals including goals for responsible consumption and production, empowering local communities, and climate action considerations. Exodus Travels (founded in 1974) was awarded Best Operator in National Geographic Traveller’s sixth annual Reader Awards in 2021.
Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel
Courtesy of Encounter Travel
According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.
All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.
Best Sustainable : G Adventures
Courtesy of Intrepid Travel
G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.
Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.
A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.
G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.
Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato
Courtesy of G Adventures
Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.
Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.
In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.
Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel
Courtesy of Contiki
With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.
According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”
In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.
FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.
Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates
Courtesy Flash Pack
Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.
Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.
The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.
Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.
Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions
Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel
It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).
The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.
Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.
Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel
Courtesy of Wild Women Expeditions
Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.
For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.
Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

FAQs and benefits of traveling solo with a group
Solo travel can offer you a unique opportunity to challenge yourself, gain independence, and have an adventure. Plus, going on a guided tour as a solo traveler comes with great perks—including, private rooms in handpicked hotels, local experts and a Tour Director to handle all the details, and the company of equally curious travelers to share your journey. Here are a few other compelling reasons to go solo:
- Take the guesswork out of exploring someplace new. Need tickets to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna? Want to dine like a true Italian at a local’s home in Rome? Wondering how to hire a boat to float down the Nile River? Our experts will help you securely and easily navigate a destination you’ve only dreamed about exploring.
- No need to find a travel partner. Perhaps the biggest reason people travel solo is not having someone with matching travel interests. Traveling solo with single travel groups opens up a whole new world of possibilities. You get to go where you want, when you want, chasing your dreams without waiting for someone to come along for the ride.
- Enjoy adventures beyond your comfort zone. Traveling solo isn’t just exhilarating, but easy on one of our small-group adventure trips . You’ll find yourself learning and trying new things, from what you do (hands-on activities) to where you’ll go (roads less traveled) to how you'll get around (think outside the bus). All you need to get started is an open mind, a good pair of walking shoes, and a passion for taking the side streets.

Thanks to its mix of culture, history, natural landscapes, and centuries-old culinary traditions, Europe is an ideal destination for travelers who book solo vacation packages. Individual countries and regions of Europe also make great choices when you go solo. For the best solo travel experiences, we recommend the following:

25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You’ll Love
By: Author Amanda OBrien
Posted on Last updated: 04/04/2024
A few years ago there were hardly any single travel groups that offered options for holidays for one – let alone companies who entirely focused on solo departures and looked at things like no single supplements etc and solo travel groups.
Thank goodness for the growth in singles travelling as now there is a good economic reason for companies to look at developing great offers for those looking for holidays for one.
There are now singles travel groups over 30s, single travel for over 50, singles travel getaways, luxury solo travel tours and singles travel getaways galore.
I will let you know which of these tour companies I have traveled with and which I haven’t – if you then go and do a tour on one of the ones I haven’t been on please do let me know what they are like – and I would love you to write a guest post if you’re up for it.
There are so many options for solo traveling today – here are some great trips for single travelers.

Encounters Travel ✔️ Private & Small Group Focus ✔️ 20 Years Experience ✔️ Range of Tours
1. Group Tours for Solo Travellers
Explore is perhaps one of the best singles travel groups. It is also the company I have been a traveling single with the most so the best place to start! Explore has been running since 1981 so they have loads of experience with running tours.
Explore covers over 100 countries and has a maximum group size of 11 and there is no single supplement if you take a shared room. There is an option to have your own room but that does cost extra. They prioritize working with locals and do a great job finding expert guides.
Around 60% of people who go on Explore trips are traveling on their own and they break down solo vacations into age groups on their website which is really helpful.
My second recommendation for solo travel vacations is G Adventures . They have a wide range of small-group trips designed for the solo traveler. There is no single supplement as long as you are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex. G Adventures also offers single rooms at reasonable prices if that is your preference.
The itineraries for G Adventures trips tend to have more free time than some of the other tour companies in this article. This is great if you are someone that likes to have some time to yourself to relax or explore further but want the support and structure of an organised group trip.
One of the most difficult parts of solo travel can be dinner. Eating on your own can feel lonely and isolating. The tour leader organizes group meals most nights, so if you want company you will almost be able to find it.
If you are traveling alone one of the best ways not to feel like it is to join a group doing some challenge – when I summited Kilimanjaro on an organized solo tour. we were a team from almost the word go. More than half of the trip was traveling solo – some were single, some had partners who didn’t want to go, some like me had someone pull out last minute etc.
It didn’t matter who you had arrived with – what mattered was everyone wanted someone to talk to about whether or not to take Diamox, tips on altitude, share lollies, etc etc.

I have done two travel solo tours with friends – North India and cycling Southern Iceland . Again an activity-based trip can be a great travel for singles option – particularly as you tend to be exhausted every night and eat and sleep.

Want to join me on a small group female trip to Africa? I am heading to Kenya in October on an 8 night safari with Walking Wild Africa and would love you to join me. It’s a unique mix of game drives, walking safari and some chill time. Make sure you tell Kim that you want to go on the tour with The Boutique Adventurer so she gets the right one!

2. Solo Female Travelers Club
Solo Female Travelers Club is a community of more than 90,000, run by the fantastic travel bloggers Meg and Mar. The heart of the community is their Facebook group, which has some great information and is the perfect way to meet other females interested in traveling solo.
Meg and Mar also run female-only small group tours that range from luxury retreats to adventurous expeditions in some awesome locations.
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 8 solo female trips](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/1.jpg?resize=1200%2C457&ssl=1)
3. Luxury Single Traveller Vacations
One company I have been particularly keen to try but it just hasn’t worked out on timings and destinations is Flash Pack . I love the tone and feel of their website – it is very much about boutique adventures.
They focus on people in their 30s and 40s and seem to have some great travel groups for solo travelers.
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 9 woman poses in front of a temple in bhaktapur nepal](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/solo-holidays-2.jpg?resize=465%2C700&ssl=1)
Australian based Travelling Divas also promises boutique hotels and customized trips. I have also been very keen to try Cox and Kings solo holidays .
Cox and Kings have a great reputation as a high-end travel specialist so I am highly confident that the thread count on their sheets will be up to my standards based on how fantastic their hotels look.
These trips though will, of course, be at a premium to some of the other options I have mentioned. But their group travel singles options look terrific.

⇒ Spas and skiing are terrific options for solo travelers. Check out my posts on the best Singles Ski Holiday options and on 30 Fabulous Solo Spa Breaks.
4. Solo Travel Companies that are specifically for traveling alone
I would highly recommend that you think beyond the country you live in when it comes to solo travel groups. For example, quite a few travel companies based in Australia now run specific holidays for solo travel groups.
Encounter Travels is all about solo travel but not traveling alone as they say.
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 10 red sands with a path and shadow of person taking photo in namibia](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/solo-holidays.jpg?resize=465%2C700&ssl=1)
They also age match so if you are a 35-year-old solo traveler you won’t be in a group of people in their 70s. They do have quite a few trips to various parts of Australia but also a few trips to other places around the world.
Another solo travel company based in Australia is Twos a Crowd . Some UK based companies that specialize in solo travel groups are:
5. Companies that specialise in Adventure
For a more adventurous bent check out 8th-day adventures . They are a London based club that has lots of sporting events and other fun things that are a mix of social and activity.
They also run some group holidays which could be good for the more adventurous solo traveler eg Everest base camp
An interesting-sounding organization is Archaeo Adventures. This female-focused travel company looks at adventures in countries like Morocco and Jordan in small groups. They are about boutique hotels, working with locals, and off-the-beaten-track experiences.
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 11 woman in jacket with hands up in front of prayer flags pile mount everest base camp](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/singles-travel-groups.jpg?resize=1050%2C698&ssl=1)
Female-focused hosted adventure trips are also the focus of Living Big which is US-based. Another company specializing in solo travel groups USA is Overseas Adventure Travel , which offers some fantastic-sounding trips for adventurous solo travelers.
Heading to Australia there are Adventurous Women and Another World Adventures. Another World Adventures curates adventures from different providers. It is a very comprehensive site with loads of options that sound great.
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 12 people setting up camp with the top of mount kilimanjaro in the background](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/singles-group-travel.jpg?resize=933%2C700&ssl=1)
6. Cruises for Solo Travelers
Even cruise ships have gotten on board with the growth in solo travel. Norwegian Cruise Line is the brand most commonly mentioned for having actually built single cabins and apparently there is a dedicated area for solo travelers.
They have several cruise brands – Norwegian Epic, Breakaway, Getaway, and Escape. But ensure you look closely as these can be more family-focused at certain times of the year – check out my top tip 2 below.
Encounter Travel also has loads of information on solo cruise options. They even have a “cabin mates wanted” section where you can potentially find another same-sex solo traveler with whom you can share a cabin.
7. Charity Based Solo Travel Companies
There are a few organisations that run group tours that have some activity/challenge that supports a charity. These can be a great way to find others to travel with and the shared sense of purpose can surely add to the group bond.
Have a look at Global Adventure Challenges and Charity Challenge.
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 13 4 people in the distance walk down a country path](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/guided-travel-tours-for-singles.jpg?resize=933%2C700&ssl=1)
8. Passion-based Solo Travel Tours
An organized trip around an activity you love that is also about solo travel is a fantastic formula to follow. Even if you don’t really bond with anyone on the trip if you have learned more about Italian cooking or photographing sea life it is a well-spent holiday.
Quite a few organizations I have listed above offer planned trips around passions and hobbies. Here are a few others I’ve found:
Frui has some fantastic looking passion-based trips – from photography (a great one for solo travel) to painting to food in some lovely locations. I did a day class with them once in London in photography and they were great.
The Red Sea in Egypt appears to be a very popular solo travel spot – most likely driven by the amount of activity that can be done in the water. There are also numerous diving and/or underwater photography courses in the area.
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 14 woman and small hut with tree in namibia](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/group-travel-tours-for-singles.jpg?resize=933%2C700&ssl=1)
Skyros is a very famous spot in Greece for activity/passion-based trips. They used to have a bit of a self-help bent but now they are very focused on passions like painting, singing, yoga, and learning.
They have two locations in Greece and one on the Isle of Wight for taster weekends. According to their site, 70% of their travelers are between 40 and 60, and most travel solo. This is a great option if you’re looking for singles travel groups over 40.
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 15 inside a yurt with floorboards and yoga mats](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/group-tours-for-singles.jpg?resize=1050%2C698&ssl=1)
9. Something Different for Single Travel Groups
In August 2017, I spent a month living life Unsettled in Medellin Colombia, and loved it. Unsettled is a fantastic concept. Essentially it aims to give people the experience of living in a city for a month rather than being a tourist.
It does this because it has about 25-30 people sign up, organizes apartments and coworking space and sets up activities that you can participate in as much or as little as you like.
The other people on the trip are your community, the hosts act as your connection to local life and having an apartment and workspace means it feels more like living.
They choose brilliant locations from Buenos Aires to Cape Town to Barcelona . I highly recommend checking them out.
If you decide to live life Unsettled then use the code “FRIENDSOFUNSETTLED” and tell them that the Boutique Adventurer sent you for a discount of USD$150 .
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 16 Flash Pack group adventures - flashpack.com - 4 women sitting having a drink](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Flash-Pack-group-adventures-flashpck.com_.jpg?resize=970%2C700&ssl=1)
Solo Travel Tips
1. mix up your plans.
A great way to travel solo is to mix things up. If you were heading to say Australia you could go and stay in a spa for a few days (a great way to meet people), head to say Sydney on your own and stay at a boutique hotel and use Tinder or join a meetup group.
You could then join an organized tour with someone like Explore, travel with them for a while, and then have some time solo again. Committing to a lengthy organized tour can be a bit much – plus it is hard to find one that covers everything that you want.
I find a mix is optimal – if you feel lonely it is only a few days till you have company, if you’re dying to be on your own again it’s only a few days till that happens. And you may very well meet others traveling alone on your organized section who are keen to have further adventures after the tour.
I have many friends I have met when traveling solo who become travel buddies and loads of other friends of mine are the same.
2. Avoid School Holidays
September is a great time to travel solo. Be careful of all organized tours/cruises etc during any school holiday time, particularly over the summer, as you may end up surrounded by families.
However, school has returned in September, and there are often many deals for solo travelers.
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 17 woman stands with arm on bare tree in dead vlei namibia](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/adventure-holidays-for-singles.jpg?resize=465%2C700&ssl=1)
3. Fill Up your Kindle
There is nothing like a good book to keep you company when traveling solo! I keep adding to my list – please email me with more suggestions! [email protected] .
I keep them all in my Amazon shop. And I have just launched a range of e-books aimed at solo travelers! I have an ebook on Solo Travel, my trip to Colombia with Unsettled and Everest Base Camp .
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 18 woman in hat from behind overlooking kerio in Iceland](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/solo-travel-groups.jpg?resize=934%2C700&ssl=1)
Frequently Asked Questions about Solo Travel
Are there travel companies just for single people.
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 19 Flash Pack group adventures - flashpack.com](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Flash-Pack-group-adventures-flashpck.com_.jpg?resize=150%2C150&ssl=1)
Yes! There are several travel companies just for single people as well as companies like G Adventures that offer trips designed for single travelers.
What is the best holiday destination for singles?
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 20 korea_daegu_yellow-bicycle](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/korea_daegu_yellow-bicycle.jpg?resize=150%2C150&ssl=1)
In my opinion, rather than focusing on a particular destination singles should look at holidays with a focus or goal like a cycling trip or a trek. This is most likely to bring together like-minded people and provide a common purpose.
Is solo travel lonely?
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 21 woman on train platform with suitcase](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Untitled-design-2021-01-31T135707.483.png?resize=280%2C280&ssl=1)
It can be. The best way to avoid feeling lonely when traveling solo is to join an organised tour. Or if you are on your own look at staying in high-end hostels for some comfort and the chance to meet others. And a good book can transport you from any difficult situation! And don’t forget to check out things like the safest cities in the US to make sure you can relax during your trip.
How do I meet other female solo travelers?
![25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You'll Love 22 COMO Shambhala Estate bali - woman in yoga post with support](https://i0.wp.com/theboutiqueadventurer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/COMO-Shambhala-Estate-bali-woman-in-yoga-post-with-support.jpg?resize=280%2C280&ssl=1)
There are several facebook groups for female solo travelers such as Solo Female Travelers (who also organise group trips for solo female travelers). I have also found that going to a spa/yoga retreat can be a good way to meet other female solo travelers.

Great ideas. I have done a lot of solo tour travel as I like the security of a tour when I am on my own. Some other companies:
Contiki is great for the 18-35s, especially when you haven't travelled much before.
My favourite company is G Adventures, no single supplement, but you can pay for your own room and a huge range of tours world wide. They are Canadian based. All ages, very budget and affordable.
Another one very similar to G Adventures but Australian based is Intrepid tours. World wide, budget, no single supplement but also has own room option if you don't want to share.
I have made life long friends on these tours when I was travelling solo. Now we meet up all over the world and do tours together!

Solo travel
Travel with g, myself and i.
Got an inner urge to get out and explore, but none of your travel buddies can make it happen? Sure, you could hit the road all on your own. But going with a small group gives your solo trip more structure, guidance and safety, letting you get head-to-toe immersed in our world.
Our most popular solo trips
Why travel solo with g adventures, you’re in good hands.
All our trips are led by a Chief Experience Officer, aka CEO. These locally based expert guides are your adventure’s captain, keeping things moving, organized, and as safe as can be.
Easy on the wallet
Why should traveling solo be more expensive? We treat single travelers the same as the rest of the group, which is why we don’t charge single supplements.
Freedom to do you
Your trip is just that – yours. Want to linger at the market or grab a table at that cozy café? Go right ahead. We give your trip structure, but also plenty of free time.
Connection comes standard
With group sizes typically ranging from 12 to 16 people, you’ll have built-in community and connection with equally adventurous travelers from all over the world.
Always female friendly
Traveling solo as a woman can feel risky, but we’re committed to keeping everyone on our trips as safe as possible at all times. From our CEOs to our same-sex roommates, all women can adventure with confidence.
Some privacy, please
Want a room all to yourself? We offer single travelers a "My Own Room" option, meaning you could have a private room (and personal washroom) for your entire trip.
Know before you go
Never traveled solo or gone as part of a group before? We can get you sorted. Check out some of our most frequently asked questions or get in touch with us any time.
We offer the “My Own Room” option on most of our tours, which guarantees you a room of your own for a modest additional fee. Cost and details of “My Own Room” vary according to the specific trip, so be sure to consult our trip summary pages for full details. On some tours, a single room may not be available at certain overnight stops, depending on the style of accommodation.
Wherever your heart takes you! Just about any place worth exploring is a good spot to venture out on your own.
Our groups often experience a good mix of ages, everything from travellers in their early-20s to those aged 60 and over. We sort all of our trips into Travel Styles, which guarantee that you’ll be travelling with people who share the same interests you do. Over the years, we’ve found that a good range of ages within a group often adds to the experience
On most evenings, your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) will organize a group meal. It’s pretty flexible; you can choose to dine with the group or head off and do your own thing. Other nights, your CEO may recommend a few nearby restaurants you can try. Again, you determine whether you want to stick with the group or go it alone.
Most of our trips split pretty evenly down gender lines. We average roughly 60:40 female-to-male, so you’ll never feel outnumbered.
On most G Adventures tours, the ratio of solo travellers to others (couples, friends travelling together, etc) is roughly 40:60. For privacy reasons, we can’t share information about your soon-to-be travelling companions ahead of time. Our tours appeal to a wide cross-section of adventurous people from all over the world united by a desire to experience our planet from a grassroots level. Our tours are conducted in English and tend to attract travellers from North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe.

Travel groups bring together individuals with similar interests from all around the world! Many single travelers decide to join a group tour as it’s an ideal setting to share the experience amongst like-minded travelers.
There are many solo travel groups available, as well as plenty of reasons why single travelers might opt to join one. Perhaps there’s a destination you’ve always wanted to visit, but would feel more comfortable traveling with an organized group.

There’s a multitude of options that cater to a wide variety of demographics, such as travel groups for singles over 40, tours for seniors traveling alone, and travel tours for singles in their 20s.
What are Group Tours?

Discovering Group Tours for Solo Travelers
![solo tour groups European tours for singles](https://www.singletravel.com/wp-content/uploads/singlestours.jpg)
If you plan to travel alone, there are factors to consider when searching for a group tour. There’s an abundance of tours and travel groups for singles. Ask yourself the below questions to help narrow down your options and determine a tour that’s best suited for you.
When do you intend to travel?
When looking at a specific group tour, you might come across a list of intended departure dates and an itinerary of the destinations you will visit. Tour companies generally have pre-set departure dates for when a tour will take place. These can be far ahead, or closer to the current date. As the tour dates and itinerary are typically pre-arranged, this is something to be mindful of when planning your vacation, so that you can choose a date that works best for your schedule.
How long would you like to travel for?
Many tours range from 8 to 14 days long, as they account for travel time between cities, and allow you to experience the highlights of the cities visited. While it depends on the tour, many itineraries will typically visit 3 to 5 different destinations within that time frame. For certain experiences, you can also find tours as short as 5 days, tours as long as 24 days, and everything else in-between.
What type of activities interest you?
Tour companies typically offer various types of tours. Perhaps you would like to spend your days hiking in the forest, explore the food and culture of a country, or uncover historic landmarks in a city. A common theme offered is sightseeing-based tours. These tours transport you to a brand-new city or country and allow you to visit the notable attractions and top highlights. They are broad and generally appeal to most people.
There are also more specific tour themes for certain interests. For example, there are adventure tours that take you outdoors, culinary trips, and sailing or cruise expeditions. While you’ll often find single travelers in most groups, there’s also tours that specifically offer group trips for solo travelers.
Where do you want to go?
Is there a specific destination that you already have in mind? If not, flip through a travel magazine for ideas, or see our Solo Trip Guide for inspiration. Tour companies will generally plan an itinerary that gives you the opportunity to visit various top cities within the same country or region. For those interested in group travel for singles, there’s a wide array of destinations to contemplate.
Try browsing through tour listings to see what piques your interest. Often, you’ll be able to see a group tour’s itinerary on the tour listing page, which displays the scheduled cities and the activities planned for each day.
See More for Solo Travelers:
There’s a multitude of cities, adventures, and group tours for singles to consider. The best group trips for singles showcase the highlights of a destination and give you the opportunity to experience a new city alongside others.
However, if you’re looking for other travel styles where a creative itinerary is planned for you, or an engaging atmosphere where you have the opportunity to meet new people, you might be interested in a voyage on a cruise! Read the Best Cruises for Solo Travelers for more options!

FAQs for solo travelers
First time traveling alone on a group holiday? We've answered the top questions about traveling alone on an Explore tour:
No, there is no extra cost for traveling by yourself on our tours if you’re happy to share with another traveler. If you prefer a room of your own, there’ll be a single room supplement to pay. How much this is depends on the trip.
Yes, we build free time into our itineraries on the majority of our trips. Check the itinerary on the trip page where we detail the plan for each day, including available free time.
Our typical small group is 11 people, plus an Explore leader. Big enough to meet likeminded people, but small enough to get close to the destination you’re visiting. The exact size varies according to the type of trip, the transport and accommodation used and activities included. We rarely have groups that are smaller than five or six people or larger than 16. Usually around half of the travelers in each group are traveling solo.
Included in our trip price is a bed in a twin room, which you would share with another person in your group of the same sex. If you prefer a room of your own, you can choose to pay for our single room option (single supplement). This is available on most of our trips but may not apply to all nights - check the trip itinerary, where we state which nights have single room options. The single supplement cost varies according to the trip – see the trip pages for pricing.
Typically, we leave the evenings free on our tours, so you can enjoy free time to do whatever you choose. Your tour leader will be on hand to recommend local restaurants and things to do, and can organise bookings for you. It's up to you whether you eat with your whole group, in smaller groups or on your own. Some trips have evening activities, for example a meal with locals in a home stay or a sunset boat ride, but often these are optional. Check the trip page for a day-to-day breakdown of included meals and activities.
Of course! People travel alone with us for all sorts of reasons, not just because they're single. So if you're partner isn't able to join you on your trip, or isn't up for traveling, you'll still be in great company.
Yes, our customers' safety is our number one priority, so you'll be safe traveling with us. Being with a group is a sure way to stay safe, and our tour leader will also be with you to watch out for the whole group. As a local, your tour leader will be able to advise you on local customs and etiquette, common phrases and what to look out for. And in the unlikely event that something unexpected should happen before or during your trip, we pride ourselves on our swift and efficient response, so you can be assured that you’ll be well looked-after. Solo Vacations
At Classic Journeys, we appreciate the spirit and independence of guests who are striking out on their own by welcoming solo travel on all of our tours. On average, about a third of our guests are single or solo travelers. If your goal is to experience the life and culture of the places you visit, you’re already one of us—and you’ll find yourself in the congenial company of others who look at the world like you do.
Single travelers should never feel like the fifth wheel
For starters, you already have a friend on tour. Our friendly and well-connected local guides are with you full time to watch out for everyone’s needs and interests, whether you are a single traveler or traveling with someone. At the fine restaurants we select, you won’t find yourself at a table for one. Instead, you’ll be enjoying delicious food and great conversation with locals and fellow travelers.

The lowest single supplements you’ll find, anywhere.
Admit it. Once you find the perfect trip, you’ve learned that if you are a single traveler you can’t get emotionally involved until you check out the single supplement. Then here’s the best news! To encourage solo and single travel, tours from Classic Journeys have the lowest single supplements you’re likely to find anywhere. We only pass along the extra cost hotels charge us, instead of marking it up to make extra profit from you.

The solo travel experience
“I want to tell you what a wonderful trip this was. Davy was amazing, and as a group of travelers, we got along splendidly (probably the best group of people I’ve had on any tour, Classic Journeys or otherwise). I’ve never laughed so hard nor had such considerate, interesting people on a tour. In fact, some of the guests are thinking about your Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos trip for next year, as am I, so we plan to stay in touch.” Susan L., four-time single traveler guest (Scotland, Italian Lakes, Prague to Budapest, and the Cotswolds, Stonehenge, and London)

If you're planning a solo vacation (but don't see yourself on a "singles vacation"), give us a call.
Frequently Asked Questions
Single travelers, are “singles vacations” the same as “solo vacations”.
Single vacations tend to be more focused on people who are single by relationship status. In the best “singles vacations”, only single persons vacation together, so they can have the chance to meet and mingle with other unmarried or unattached people.
A solo traveler may fit into this category, but could also be somebody who’s married or attached. In this case, the solo traveler is booking the tour on their own, and what is bonding them to their fellow travelers in the group is that they are likeminded people who want the same experience out of their vacation and immersion into their chosen destination. For them, the shared way of travel and destination are more important than their relationship status as a defining characteristic.
I'm a single woman traveler over 50, and not interested in a "single persons vacation”, but I don’t want to travel alone. Will Classic Journeys tours suit me?
Yes! Regardless of whether you’re single by relationship status, a solo traveler, or neither, if you like to immerse yourself into bucket list places in the company of amazing people, you’re one of us. On our escorted group tours, you’ll be joining interesting, likeminded people, who are just as engaged as you in the places you’re visiting.
What are the best solo vacations?
On the best vacations for solo travelers, you may be booking a vacation for one, but you won’t spend the trip alone. You’ll travel in a group with interesting, likeminded people who share your love of travel. With local guides and expertly curated itineraries, you’ll see the very best of the destination you’re visiting.
Does solo travel mean traveling alone?
No, unless you want it to! If you are a solo traveler who does not want to travel alone, you can join one of our published group tours and enjoy the company of fellow travelers as excited about your chosen destination as you are.
Is solo travel expensive?
Traveling solo in a group can actually provide you very good value. For example, consider that you are splitting the cost of the guide, vehicle, and driver with other travelers. So that makes the expense for those important elements of vacation so much less than they would be if you were traveling on your own.
What is a single supplement?
A single supplement is a surcharge that hotels charge when a solo person has a room to themselves (most initial prices are based on double occupancy). Some tour companies mark this further to profit from it, but Classic Journeys does not. Thanks to our close relationship with hoteliers, we manage to secure the best prices for every guest. And, you get a true double room for single use, rather than the dreaded “single” room.
Is solo travel lonely?
No! Just because you are setting off ‘solo’, doesn’t mean you’re on your own. With Classic Journeys, you have the company of your amazing and well-connected local guides, as well as other guests on our award-winning small group tours.
Is solo travel fun?
Yes! Our solo guests have a tremendous time traveling with us, and our itineraries are crafted to ensure everyone has a great time, whether traveling on their own or not.
Is solo travel safe?
Yes! When you have an expert local guide with you throughout your trip, you’re not alone. They speak the local language and English fluently, and have all of the contacts they can call upon if necessary. You can relax, knowing that your guide has the plan for the day, and plans B, C, and D if they’re ever needed.
Read how our local guide, Clive, used his personal connections to get our guests the last flight out of Cape Town or how another guide, Jalil helped a guest get to a dentist in the middle of the night, before the tour even started!
Is solo travel worth it?
Yes! It’s a wonderful way to see new places, experience different cultures, and make new friends. And you do not need to wait for a friend or traveling companion to have the same vacation schedule or choice of a travel destination as you.
What is solo traveling?
Solo traveling is when you book a vacation or tour for yourself, without adding anybody else to your traveling party.
What is the best destination for solo travelers?
Alaska and the national parks of Bryce, Grand Canyon & Zion are favorites for solo travelers, offering so much to experience without leaving the country. If you want to travel further afield, the Galapagos and Costa Rica are always very popular with our solo guests.
Top tips for first-time solo travelers?
- If it’s your first solo vacation, join a group tour so that you can enjoy sociable travel, even when setting off solo
- Travel with a local guide and trusted vendors, so that you always have an expert on hand
- Embrace stepping out of your comfort zone, and trust the thousands of travelers who go solo too – solo travel is worth it!

For Your Expert Local Guide
For over four decades, our guides have been carefully selected for their remarkable local knowledge and expertise, making our adventures truly unique. Our experts are intimately familiar with their destination and will take you to the most amazing local markets, authentic family-run restaurants, secluded trails, and spectacular viewpoints that only a local would know.
This valuable knowledge will not only enrich your experience but also immerse you in the local culture, which is something you may miss out on if you travel solo, on your own.

For Meeting Like-Minded Travelers
As the saying goes, “happiness is the only thing that’s doubled when it’s shared” – and we couldn’t agree more, as some of the most memorable travel moments come from sharing the experience with others.
Our guided groups are typically composed of a mix of solo travelers, couples, and friends who all share a profound desire for travel and exploring different cultures. We often find that our travelers make lifelong friends on our adventures, with many returning to us to plan more trips together – sometimes even with the same local guide.

For Reassurance
When you travel with Exodus, you can be confident that your safety is our highest priority. Our expert guides have an in-depth understanding of the local area, so they know exactly which areas to explore and which to avoid.
They also ensure that you know where’s best to exchange your money and all transportation for the trip has passed our rigorous safety checks. Every itinerary is carefully crafted with safety in mind, so you can relax and savor the adventure without worry!

For Convenience and Ease
The benefits of travelling solo with our guided groups are that your walking routes, cycling paths, and cultural pit-stops have been carefully planned to showcase the best of your destination and its hidden gems, taking all the hassle out of planning your solo travel tour.
We recommend that you review our detailed trip notes before you go, which provide helpful tips on what to pack and how to prepare for your upcoming trip. Your luggage transfers, accommodation, and connections are also taken care of, ensuring a smooth journey from start to finish!

What our travellers say
Here’s what some of our past solo travellers had to say:
“Exceptional! After decades of solo travel, doing it all myself, this was a game changer being in a small group…I like my space a lot yet everyone was so authentic, like-minded.” – Arlette Lee, Exodus Traveller
“The trips are so well organised. I like to travel alone which is well catered for on their holidays, as there are often several other singles on their trips.” – Gary Brooks, Exodus Traveller

SOLO TRAVEL FAQs
On our trips, we offer twin-shared rooms with a fellow traveler of the same gender, but if you’d like the flexibility to book your own private room, you can add a single supplement to your booking for a small additional fee.
Our small guided-group tours are led by experienced local experts and typically have 8-16 people in one group. Our itineraries are designed to showcase the best highlights and hidden gems of your destination, while also providing an inclusive atmosphere. During the day, you’ll take part in daily activities with your group, and your guide will accompany you to dinner and help you choose regional specialties. We also include some downtime and free days on our trips, where you can explore on your own and take advantage of your guide’s local knowledge to find the best restaurants, museums, art galleries, and more.
We are fortunate to have travelers joining us from all corners of the globe, with many coming from the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and spanning a wide range of ages. Even better, over 50% of our customers choose to travel solo with us, so we rarely have a group that only has one solo traveler – most are a great mix of solos, couples, and friends traveling together. Before your trip begins, you will also be invited to join our “Departure Lounge” by email, where you can post a message, start a discussion with other travelers, ask questions, and share travel tips. This is a great way to get to know your group before you embark on your adventure.
Surprisingly, traveling on a guided-group tour can be more cost-effective than traveling solo on your own, as you can split the cost of some optional activities with the group as you go. Most transfers, meals, and organized activities are also included in your booking costs, which can add up quickly if you’re traveling alone, especially if you’re looking to explore remote locations.

What people love about North America Solo Tours
Most Amazing Family Vacation Ever! The 7-day private tour of the Southwest National Parks (hotel version) Hard to put into words but this was the perfect way for our family to experience the dramatic sites and cultural experiences of the southwest National Parks! We had the most amazing tour guide (Thanks Marie!) and the agenda was the right balance of keeping us engaged while covering so much ground. Each National Park had its own unique and wonderful qualities and this 7-day tour gave us just enough time to soak up the natural beauty. Also, there are hikes and tours for all ages (we let the boys take on the more difficult hikes while Mom and Dad took the more accessible routes. The pick up and drop off in Las Vegas was very convenient and allowed us just enough time to enjoy a few nights in Las Vegas. Would HIGHLY recommend!
I only wished it lasted longer
Everything was great organized, our CEO Megan was so kind and well prepared.

There’s no need to wait for a friend to say ‘yes’ to an adventure - not when you travel with us
Whether you've got more time to spare now that the kids have flown the nest, you’re free from the 9-5 grind, or you want to explore the world with eyes that see things a little differently than your younger self, the best travels of your life may be just around the corner. Our trips are for people of all ages and backgrounds - united by a love for travel, a thirst for adventure and an insatiable curiosity about the world. With a range of trip styles , a passionate local leader to handle the logistics and a small group of travelers just as excited to discover the soul of a destination as you are, the only thing you need to do is decide where to go.
Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.
Our Premium trips feature our best accommodation, most comfortable transport and exclusive experiences led by our most experienced leaders.
Designed for those who want more inclusions, our Comfort trips offer a higher standard of accommodation, larger vehicles and more included activities.
The classic Intrepid style. Our Original trips include some activities and stay at more hotels than Basix trips—an ideal choice for those who want a taste of everything.
For travelers on a budget, our Basix trips keep inclusions to a minimum. They’re about value and lots of free time to choose the activities and extras that you want to do.
Stuffy coaches, flag-touting tour guides and ‘seeing the sights’ isn’t our vibe. We prefer culturally rich experiences – led by a local – that take you behind the scenes of a destination. Our itineraries are packed with unique insights into local life. We're talking hands-on pastry-making classes with local Macedonian women, watching a traditional dance performance on the sand dunes in Pushkar or sleeping in a lush eco-resort in the Amazon.
We’ve found that it’s not always about the places you go but the people you meet along the way. Our trips are designed for people of all ages and with all sorts of life stories. With an average group size of 10, you'll get to know each other beyond the pleasantries over long dinner conversations and shared experiences. With a little luck, the friendships you make on your trip may last long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase at home.
As exciting as traveling is, it often involves a fair bit of planning. While we're sure you're well-equipped to handle any situation, the beauty of traveling with us means we'll do the heavy lifting and take care of the nitty-gritty details so you can focus on what you're here to do: travel! From navigating border crossings to booking bus tickets, bridging language barriers to cultural dos and don'ts, sit back and enjoy yourself while your leader takes care of everything.
We understand that people travel for different reasons. That’s why we’ve created a range of travel themes and styles to suit every Intrepid traveler. From our Basix style with simple accommodation and plenty of free time to our Premium trips featuring our best stays, experiences and leaders (with our Original and Comfort styles in between), choose what suits you and get ready for an unforgettable experience.

Do I need a COVID-19 vaccine to join an Intrepid trip?
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
Who are Intrepid travelers?
Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical rating and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures, no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.
Are there age restrictions on your trips?
For the majority of our trips, the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures , but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all travelers 70 years and over.
How many people will be on my trip?
Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.
I’m traveling alone – is that OK?
This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.
I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.
Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical, we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.
Do I need to buy travel insurance?
Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation, but minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.
For travelers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and travelers from these regions who decline travel insurance when traveling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognizing personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise.
Will I have my own room?
It’s completely up to you. On our trips, rooming is organized on a twin-share basis, and we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. But if you'd like your own room, an individual room is available on the majority of our trips (it’s just a small extra charge). Just mention this to our customer service team when booking your trip and they'll arrange it for you.
As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.
On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances it will clearly be stated in our Essential Trip Information prior to booking and traveling.
How does group time work?
Whether you’re traveling solo or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). The amount of free time depends on the travel style - you can ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.
What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?
The main difference between a small group trip and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average), while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Good advice for us all, but particularly for people traveling solo. Make copies of your itinerary, contact details, passport and travel insurance, then email them to yourself and to one or two friends/family at home. Check-in on social media when you can so people can keep track of where you are.
Remember the little things
If you’re arriving late in a city by yourself, book a hotel with a front desk or concierge service (many hotels also offer private transfers that don’t cost the earth from the airport or train station).
If you're traveling with us, we can help you organize an arrival transfer. Read your maps before you head out for a walk (you can use a map app on your smartphone – or take screenshots of where you’re going if you don’t want to use up your precious data). If you need to check your map when you’re out and about, duck into a shop or café to do it.
Leave the blingy jewelry, wedding rings and designer clothes at home, and aim to dress like the locals do – hit up the local markets if you haven’t packed the right outfits. Aim to keep track of travel times, so you’re not caught out after dark.
Roam if you want to
Most mobile/cell providers now offer travel passes to help manage your international roaming costs (which, let’s face it, are expensive!).
For a few dollars a day, you’ll have access to data, which means you can log into your apps (like Skype, email and WhatsApp) when you’re out of WiFi zones and quickly get in touch with someone – a friend at home, someone in your group, or the police – if you need to.
It might also be worth checking out the local cell/mobile providers as these can be quite cost effective.
Fare's fair
Solo travelers are way more likely to be ‘taken for a ride’ at the airport by unscrupulous taxi drivers, so do your research before you arrive. Make sure you get a cab from the airport/station taxi rank – if you’re not sure where to go, just head to the information desk for help.
Touts tend to hang out in the arrivals area and promise cheaper rates, but can often be dodgy. When you get to the cab rank, ask the driver to use the meter or request a cost estimate before you hop in the car – if it’s way higher than it should be, pick another vehicle.
A lot of airports have train stations attached as well, so consider public transport if you want to save a dollar or two.
Stick together
It’s one of the advantages of travelling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small Intrepid group of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way – including areas to avoid and getting around safely – won’t draw much attention.
Plus, it’s a great way to see parts of the world you may feel uncomfortable exploring on your own. If you want to do things on your own, consider a day tour to familiarise yourself with a city and get to know the local way of life.
Trust your instincts
Solo travel is all about confidence. If you’re relaxed and self-assured on the street, you’re more likely to blend in. When you meet new people, don’t assume they’re all out to get you, but be sensible too and trust your gut. If it feels wrong, it probably is.
Remember: the popular tourist areas are often the most well-lit and secure, but they’re often a juicier target for pickpockets and scammers. Just use your common sense; half of travel safety is simply being aware of your surroundings.

Matador Original Series
Finding myself on an adventurous (and solo) wyoming road trip.
W hen facing tough life decisions, sometimes, having time alone for introspection can be just what you need. And what better way to do that than to hit the road in an inspiring location, with a good playlist, a tank full of gas, and a blank journal? (And limited cell service, in my case.)
When I set out on my solo Wyoming road trip through the picturesque Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming, I was apprehensive, as it was my first road trip alone. However, I was eager for some time away from my usually busy schedule to focus on discovering what’s most important to me at this point in my life. Many of us – myself included – spend much of our time just going through life, getting wrapped up in our day-to-day activities without making time to reflect and plot intentional paths forward toward our goals.

When I found myself with few free days to travel, I decided to make space for daydreaming, reminiscing, and setting future goals. And a Wyoming road trip seemed like it would provide plenty of wide-open spaces to support my wandering and wondering.
The Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming have an ever-changing landscape, dotted with roaming wildlife, charming small towns, and friendly residents. It turned out to be an ideal location, away from the crowds of Yellowstone and Jackson Hole, and with just enough activities to challenge me, but not enough to create a schedule of endless distractions.
My Wyoming road trip route
- Total driving distance: +/- 501 miles
- Total driving time: +/- 9 hours
Day one: Cody to Buffalo
- Driving distance: 220 miles
- Total drive time: 4 hours
I started by flying into the Yellowstone Regional Airport in Cody, Wyoming (not to be confused with Yellowstone Airport in West Yellowstone, Montana). In Cody, I picked up a rental car and headed east to beautiful Shell Falls for my first stop in the Bighorn Mountains.
It sits along the Bighorn Scenic Byway and the drive there passes through the 1.1 million-acre Bighorn National Forest. It’s a sprawling landscape of vast open plains, steep canyon walls, dense forests, streams and creeks, green meadows, and stunning red cliffs. To stretch my legs and appreciate the beauty, I stopped at the Shell Falls National Recreational Trail, an easy trail with several lookout points. After breathing the fresh mountain air, listening to the rush of the falls, and taking in the splendor of the scenery, I found a bench facing the 120-foot-tall falls and pulled out my journal to start plotting my dream life. Off to a good start.
Next, I started driving to Tensleep Canyon, where I’d booked my first official activity of the trip: guided rock climbing. On the way, I stopped in the sleepy town of Greybull (population 1,700) for lunch at Lisa’s Western Cuisine & Spirits . Like many of the small towns in the region, the main street is lined with historic brick buildings housing restaurants, motels, and shops. With timber walls, rodeo artwork, and a menu featuring Southwestern and Tex-Mex cuisine, I filled up on pasta primavera and a spinach salad. Reaching Tensleep was a lot of driving, but it gave me the time to alternate between listening to a motivational audio book, and having quiet time to contemplate and appreciate the scenery.

At Tensleep Canyon, I met up with Wyoming Mountain Guides owner Zach Lentsch, who belayed me on a challenging (well, challenging for me, at least) 50-foot-tall climbing route across a limestone face. Lentsch grew up climbing in Wyoming and is eager to make climbing accessible to everyone, while educating the next generation on the importance of sustainability. Witnessing him living a life of such passion made me grateful for taking time to ensure the utmost contentment in my own life.
After a successful climb, we ducked behind some overgrown trees and scrambled around towering boulders to a point overlooking a 100-foot-tall face – and the dramatic terrain below. From there, I could see the rugged gray-and-painted-red rocks against the lush green valley, divided by rushing Tensleep Creek. Despite some trepidation, I managed to make it to the top of the much taller route, and came away from the afternoon feeling confident and proud. From the front seat of my car, with the door open, I listened to the soothing sounds of the creek while jotting down some poignant thoughts in my journal.
![solo tour groups Buffalo, wyoming road trip](https://cdn1.matadornetwork.com/blogs/1/2024/06/buffalo-wyoming.jpg)
Photo: Cheri Alguire /Shutterstock
My last drive for the day took me to Buffalo, Wyoming, along the Cloud Peak Skyway Scenic Byway. Feeling good after climbing, I sang out loud to my favorite ’80s tunes playing on the local radio station as I passed ponderosa pines, Douglas fir, cottonwoods, and aspen trees.
By the time I reached Buffalo, I was hungry and tired, and happy to check into The Historic Occidental Hotel . The Victorian hotel dates to 1808 and is a museum as well as a hotel, housing artifacts and antiques from the Old West era, when it hosted guests like “Buffalo” Bill Cody and Butch Cassidy.
While sinking my teeth into a tasty black bean burger (no bison burgers for this vegetarian) at on-site Saloon restaurant, I was treated to vocals by a talented local duo singing “You are My Sunshine,” loud and proud. I called it a night, climbing listlessly into my bed with a brass headboard, cozy quilt, and framed artwork of the Wyoming landscape hanging above.
Day two: Buffalo to Sheridan
- Driving distance: 87 miles
- Total drive time: 1.5 hours
With a belly full of cinnamon roll French toast from Buffalo’s Busy Bee Cafe, I started day two of my Wyoming road trip bound for the town of Sheridan. But on the way, I planned to stop for a long hike in the stunning Tongue River Canyon, about an hour from Buffalo.
Driving down the dirt road to the trailhead, I was in awe of the jagged cliffs towering above me. The sky was a brilliant blue shining above the dark green forest. Donning my hydration backpack and bear bell — though I wished I’d brought bear spray — I grabbed my hiking poles and set off on my first solo hike in the remote wilderness.
The trail paralleled the Tongue River, providing a calming soundtrack for my hike. My mind flip-flopped between focusing on the sense of grandeur the landscape provoked, and a tinge of fear. “What the hell would I do if I encountered a bear? Or some weirdo hiding in the woods?” I wondered. “There’s no one out here to save me.” I reminded myself to breathe, and even with my “fight-or-flight” reflexes in a constant battle, the beauty of nature inspired me to trot on, finishing the four-mile hike with a sense of accomplishment – and only a tinge of disappointment that I had no one to share it with.
Before I left, I sat at a picnic table overlooking the river and scribbled in my journal some ideas about how to live more mindfully.

After hiking, I drove on to Sheridan, where I’d booked a fly-fishing class. Wyoming is the least populated state in the US, but Sheridan is used to seeing its fair share of tourists as it’s the midpoint between Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park. After a quick lunch, I headed to the Fly Shop of the Bighorns to meet my fishing guide from Rock Creek Anglers, who outfitted me with waders, a pole and some synthetic flies.
We headed to nearby Piney Creek, where I learned how to find the perfect fly-fishing spot: not too deep or too shallow, with water that isn’t running too fast or slow. As a first-time fly fisher, the intricacies of the flies impressed me. My guide’s tackle box overflowed with colorful creatures mimicking bugs the fish would normally eat.
After learning the basics and watching my guide (and sixth-grade teacher) Scott Schroder whip the line, I waded in and tried the same thing. No luck. Schroder kept urging me, suggesting “Use your elbow, not your wrist.” Though I didn’t catch “the big one” (or even a little one, for that matter), I did enjoy the beauty of the area, getting to chat with Schroder, and learning the subtleties of fly fishing. We even saw a mink in the wild.
My bed for that night was at the Historic Sheridan Inn , a registered National Historic Landmark with the National Park Service, founded in 1893 to service those traveling west by train. My room was named after Queen Victoria, a known fan of Buffalo Bill’s “Wild West Show.”
Day three: Sheridan to Lovell
- Driving distance: 148 miles
- Total drive time: 3 hours
On day three, I headed to what ended up being my favorite part of my Wyoming road trip: the Medicine Wheel Passage Scenic Byway . This steep, two-lane road is one of the steepest in the country , passing through the Bighorn National Forest in the Bighorn Mountains, and moose and pronghorns moseyed across the road in front of me several times. The highest point (9,430 feet in elevation) was still covered in snow in early June, and overlooked the stunning Big Horn Basin below, like a painting with muted hues of green, red, yellow, blue and gray.
My next stop was Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center in Lovell to search for wild mustangs in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. I went out with the center’s Executive Director Nancy Cerroni, putting her Jeep to the test on the red, rugged, and rocky road through the Martianesque landscape of the wild horse range. Thanks to Ceronni’s knowledge, we encountered more than a dozen of the nearly 200 majestic mustangs who live in the area. Along the way, I learned about the history, markings, coloring, behaviors, plight, and politics around the horses.

With a population of about 2,405, Lovell does not have many options for dining or accommodations. But there are plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities in the area, including lots of hiking trails in Bighorn Canyon. I spent the afternoon searching for trailheads off Highway 37 – the Sykes Mountain Trail is one of the more popular — but I struggled on my own to find the trailheads. Instead, I drove to Devil Canyon Overlook in Montana, which blew me away.
From the top of the 1,000-foot-tall cliffs, I peered down into the horseshoe bend of the canyon where the Bighorn River flowed silently below. I took my time meandering quietly on the short loop trail, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the landscape, which I had all to myself. It was the perfect place to pull up a seat on a bench and jot some thoughts in my journal.

After hiking, I returned to Lovell and checked into my last stay of my Wyoming road trip, at the boutique Horseshoe Bend Motel . Owner Bobbi McJunkin took over the hotel from her father and gave it a modern facelift.
As a solo female traveler, I was a bit unnerved to notice the group of men staying in the room next to me hanging out and drinking beers in the parking lot. In my room, I hurriedly pulled the blinds closed and locked the door. But around 9 PM, I was startled by a knock on my door from McJunkin. It turns out I had left my key on the outside of my door, and the guys next door had kindly asked McJunkin to let me know.
Day four: Lovell to Cody
- Driving distance: 46 miles
- Total drive time: 50 minutes
After a few days of solitude, surrounded by the beauty of nature and wildlife, I started the journey back to Cody to head home and stopped at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. I was out of time, but if I’d been able to squeeze in another hike, I would have hired a hiking guide to show me some of the local trails around Cody. They’re a good option for solo travelers who don’t want to hike alone.
On the drive back, I reminisced about the stunning scenery and interesting people I met along the way. The trip gave me insight into a cowboy-focused, outdoor culture I hadn’t experienced, and let me peek into what small town life is like – quite different from my home in LA. The experience made me realize that many people pass through these small towns on the way to do or see something else, but don’t realize that the towns, and the history and experiences in them, are worth stopping in their own right.
While initially hesitant to take the Wyoming road trip alone, it gave me the time and bandwidth not only for self-reflection, but for seeing the state on my own terms. I stopped when and where I wanted, and got to have one-on-one conversations with guides and small-business owners. It gave me a few days to focus just on myself – and the courage to hit the open road solo again next time.
What to pack for a solo road trip
If you’re planning on setting off on a solo, contemplative journey in an off-the-beaten-path location, you’ll want to do some pre-planning. Here’s what I found came in handy while spending long hours on the road in remote locations.
- An inspirational audio book
- A sing-along playlist (downloaded)
- A journal and pen; maybe even colored pencils for sketching
- Lots of water and snacks
- Map and printed directions
- First-aid kit
- Charged portable power bank
- Health insurance card
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat

Dear listeners,
This is not exactly a boom time for American girl groups*. The last high-profile one to have any chart success was Fifth Harmony , who formed on the 2012 season of “The X Factor” and went on an indefinite hiatus in 2018. I bring this up because, strikingly, two former members of Fifth Harmony have released solo albums in the past two weeks: The R&B chanteuse Normani put out her long-gestating “Dopamine” on June 14, and today the Cuban-born pop star Camila Cabello is unleashing her bold, outré fourth solo album, “C, XOXO.”
In honor of this rare phenomenon in the pop cosmos, I thought it would be fun to put together a playlist of songs by former members of all-female vocal groups — past and present — who flew the coop and went solo. Yes, this mix features Beyoncé . And Kelly Rowland too! It also includes tracks from the Supreme Ms. Diana Ross , the multitalented Dawn Richard and the eternally cool Ronnie Spector , among others.
Also, a programming note: I will be on vacation for the next two weeks, but as always I’ll be leaving you in good hands. Expect a fresh Amplifier written by a very special guest to arrive in your inbox each Tuesday while I’m gone, and get ready for an especially eclectic record haul playlist when I return from my travels. Til then!
Respectfully I say to thee,
*The girl group is, of course, still alive and well in the K-pop world. If I had to guess, I’d predict that the next major, global, post-girl-group superstar will come from South Korea.
Listen along while you read.
1. diana ross: “upside down”.
One of the original girl group members to strike out on her own, Diana Ross released her first solo album in 1970. A decade later, she hit her commercial peak with the sleek, disco-inflected album “Diana,” written entirely by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of Chic. This slinky hit topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in the summer of 1980. ▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube
2. Beyoncé: “Me, Myself and I”
A veteran of both Destiny’s Child and [Ed McMahon voice] the hip-hop rappin’ Girls Tyme , Beyoncé stepped into the spotlight in 2003 with her six-times platinum smash “Dangerously in Love.” Though the album contained plenty of upbeat bangers like “Crazy in Love,” “Naughty Girl” and “Baby Boy,” this memorable ballad is an assertion of strength in the face of a breakup that could also double as a solo artist’s manifesto: “I realized I’ve got me, myself and I/That’s all I got in the end, that’s what I found out.”

3. Normani: “Take My Time”
As I mentioned on a recent playlist , fans had been waiting a long, long time for the former Fifth Harmony member Normani to release her debut solo album, “Dopamine,” which finally dropped two weeks ago. This fun “Dopamine” highlight certainly sounds like a playful wink at the album’s endless delays: “I want you to take my time,” she sings on the chorus. “Just don’t take forever.”
4. Camila Cabello featuring Young Thug: “Havana”
I’ll be honest with you: I personally am not feeling the faux-subversive, macro-budget hyperpop left turn Camila Cabello is attempting to pull off on “C, XOXO.” So let’s instead return to a simpler time, specifically 2018 , when this sweat-kissed and relentlessly catchy earworm ruled the airwaves. It still sounds like summer.
5. Geri Halliwell: “Look at Me”
If you were not, say, an impressionable 11-year-old girl when it happened, it might be difficult to fully understand the cataclysmic shock waves that rippled through the Earth’s atmosphere on May 31, 1998, when Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) announced that she was leaving the Spice Girls. And though Melanie C’s “Sandstorm”-esque hit “I Turn to You” is certainly the better song, I would argue that this hammy Shirley Bassey rip-off is the definitive Spice Girls solo single, for all its bonkers, you-had-to-be-there inanity. Look at her indeed!
6. Dawn Richard: “Bussifame”
Sometimes the confines of a prefabricated girl group start to inhibit its more sonically adventurous members. Such is the case of Dawn Richard , who began her career as a member of Danity Kane, a girl group assembled on the third season of MTV’s “Making the Band.” Richard has spread her wings throughout an impressive but still underrated solo run; she first came to my attention with her acclaimed 2013 album “Goldenheart.” Her most recent solo album, “Second Line,” an inventive, retro-futuristic tribute to the music of New Orleans, featured this fluid and funky highlight.
7. Jennie: “Solo”
Though the K-pop juggernaut Blackpink is still together, all four of its current members have released solo material. The cheeky title of this 2018 single from Jennie — who last year made her acting debut on the HBO series “The Idol” — makes it an obvious choice for this playlist.
8. Kelly Rowland: “Dirty Laundry”
The former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland exposes the darker side of the girl-group-to-solo-star trajectory on this remarkably candid 2013 ballad. “Bittersweet, she was up, I was down,” Rowland sings, clearly referencing her former bandmate and longtime friend Beyoncé. “No lie, I feel good for her, but what do I do now?”
9. Ronnie Spector featuring Joey Ramone: “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory”
And finally, the iconic and resilient Ronette Ronnie Spector reclaimed her autonomy with a solo career, which includes the spirited 2006 album “The Last of the Rock Stars.” That LP featured some impressive guests, like Patti Smith and Keith Richards, but its high point is probably this collaboration with Joey Ramone. Spector’s wistful, weathered wail reanimates this soulful Johnny Thunders tune.

Bonus Tracks
Camila Cabello appears on this week’s Friday Playlist , which also features new music from Wilco , Towa Bird and Pom Pom Squad . Listen here .
Though it’s not a solo release, my favorite thing Dawn Richard has ever done is probably “Pigments,” a beautiful album-length collaboration with the composer Spencer Zahn . Highly recommended!

Also, I will send you off into this weekend and beyond with some very good vibes. Mets infielder José Iglesias just released his latest single , “OMG,” under the name Candelita . Once in the gutter, the 2024 Mets have won 11 of their last 13 games (as of this writing), putting them right back in contention for a wild-card spot. Several factors have likely played a part in the Mets’ recent improbable turnaround: the return of catcher Francisco Alvarez, the emergence of Francisco Lindor as a consistent leadoff hitter and of course the potent magic of Grimace . But the team has also reportedly been playing this bouncy and jubilant tune in the clubhouse after every win, and I have to believe it has made all the difference. Honestly? It’s a bop, destined to become the Song of the Summer — at least in Flushing, Queens.

It's one of the advantages of traveling solo on a group tour: safety in numbers. The big, 50-person bus groups stand out on the road, but a small Intrepid group of eight or nine people, with a local leader showing the way - including areas to avoid and getting around safely - won't draw much attention.
