Gay Vancouver Vancouver City Guide

When the morning mist clears, the sun hits the glass skyscrapers of the Vancouver skyline making the city shine like a kaleidoscope. The glare is softened only by the monstrosity of the North Shore Mountains dwarfing the city and lulling its active residents for morning trail runs through ancient forests. Then, the city begins to buzz as the tankers come into Canada’s biggest port and its diverse communities begin their days preparing the kitchens of Canada’s best food scene and opening the gallery doors of an effervescent art scene. As Canada’s most sought-after city, many dream of making Vancouver home and their international tourism flourishes year round. For your definitive Vancouver gay guide, you’ve come to the right place.

The best hotels in Vancouver

Let’s start this gay Vancouver travel guide with a roundup of the best places to stay in Vancouver. When it comes to hotels, we typically prefer to recommend a variety of brands, but in Vancouver, if you’re not staying at one of the four Fairmont properties, you’re probably doing it wrong. Fairmont has become synonymous with luxury and in Vancouver; visitors have four very different options to choose from, starting at the airport. The Fairmont Vancouver Airport is best experienced on arrival or departure, which can help with adjustment (depending on where one is flying in from) or makes sense for those early morning departures. Conveniently located inside the US departures terminal, the soundproofed luxury hotel and spa was recently voted #1 airport hotel in North America for the fourth year in a row. Rooms come with views of an active airport, so AV geeks will literally rejoice as they watch jets come and go, right from their bed. The Jetside Bar also provides a viewing gallery of sorts in addition to exquisite cocktails and tapas.

Within Vancouver city limits, the  Fairmont Waterfront Hotel is located on the harbour front, which embraces a sustainable philosophy, with a “5Green Key” ranking by Green Key Global due to many of their initiatives including their rooftop pollinator hotel for honey bees, as well as their use of their own herb garden. Rooms here recently were renovated, and the views of Burrard Inlet and the coastal mountains from the property are breath-taking. The Castle in the City, also known as the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is a historic property that reflects the timeless luxury and history of the city. Situated in the heart of downtown, it’s located minutes from some of Vancouver’s biggest attractions. Inside the hotel lobby, high-fashion retail is available, including Gucci and Chanel. The brunch at Notch8 Restaurant & Bar is worth the entry fee but come with an empty stomach, as the tempting options are not limited.

The newest member of the Vancouver Fairmont collection is the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel , which is a very different look and feel from the others. The sophisticated and contemporary features of the design and architecture will impress even the most finicky of hotel design connoisseurs. The suites here are designed for the elite traveller, including their new collection of Owner’s Suites, which incorporates elements of fashion, art and music. The Fairmont Gold lounge at this property is one for the record books and a must if staying here.

We understand that sometimes the smaller boutiques are the way to go; therefore we will include our favourites. The Loden Hotel is a 77-room luxury boutique with a modern feel and popular French bistro. Moda Hotel is in the upper-middle range of boutiques and is more reasonably priced, located near Robson Square. And the St. Regis Hotel (unaffiliated with the luxury brand) is another mid-range boutique in downtown with quaint yet modern rooms that come with free breakfast

LGBTQ Travel Guide: Vancouver

gay tour guide vancouver

Joe Daniel Price / Getty Images

Vancouver is one of North America’s most LGBTQ-friendly (and environmentally progressive) cities. With a population of about 675,000 people, this Pacific Northwest gem draws record numbers of visitors each year for its scenery, extensive bike trails, refreshingly casual style, and a society in which LGBTQ folks are woven into the very fabric.

In fact, Tourism Vancouver launched a “meet the locals” campaign spotlighting members of its colorful, diverse LGBTQ community, including Two-Spirited Squamish First Nations designer Tyler Alan Jacobs and half-Squamish, half African-American DJ, Orene Askew.

Much like Toronto and Montreal, Vancouver also has an active gay village, aka Davie Village, peppered with LGBTQ-friendly bars, nightclubs, and one of the longest-running LGBTQ bookstores on the continent, Little Sisters. The whole area pulses with rainbow-striped energy and excitement during late summer’s Vancouver Pride . Here's your guide to all things LGBTQ in Vancouver, whether you're visiting for Pride, the annual Vancouver Queer Film Festival , or anytime during the year!

Things to Do

First, get familiarized with downtown Vancouver and its Davie Village while taking a deep dive into its LGBTQ history with Forbidden Vancouver’s Really Gay History Tour . Donning an easily spotted pink fedora, guide Glen Tkach leads this weekly three-hour walking tour, during which he shares truly fascinating stories that he personally researched, sourcing many from extensive interviews with witnesses to history and archival material (he complements these anecdotes with photos and documents). You won’t find most of this in history books—for example, “buggery trials” that took place at the former courthouse-turned-Vancouver Art Museum—making the tour a fascinating must for even those who consider themselves very familiar with Vancouver.

One tour stop entails Davie Village’s Little Sister’s Book & Art Emporium , an LGBTQ bookstore that opened in 1983 and has survived despite bomb threats and attempts by Canadian customs to shut it down for importing “obscene” materials. Today, the shop carries a fantastic mix of LGBTQ-interest books for all ages, including clothing, accessories, and gay pride everything.

Vancouver is also one of North America’s most bike-friendly cities with about 279 miles of bicycle routes, including protected lanes and dedicated trails around and within Stanley Park and the glorious seawall. Rent a bicycle from or take a tour with the very LGBTQ-friendly City Cycle Tours ; numerous models are available, including e-bikes, which are perfect if planning on steep, strenuous inclines (e.g. hipster Main Street) or speedier, less sweaty rides. It's a well-oiled machine with seemingly bottomless stock of rental bikes, so even during peak summertime bike days you'll still find available models. Spokes is another option and is located opposite Stanley Park’s seawall entrance on Denman and Georgia Streets. It offers numerous manual bicycles including tandem bikes.

Also take a ride or walk around East Vancouver's residential Commercial Drive , which is known to be especially lesbian-friendly.

While Vancouver is less of a museum and gallery destination than Toronto or Montreal, downtown’s Vancouver Art Gallery is world-class with a diverse line-up and great shop, and a new building, designed by Switzerland-based architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, is in the works. Also a gem, Chinatown's contemporary-focused, private Rennie Museum offers free tours, though reservations typically must be made in advance.

LGBTQ Bars and Clubs

Most of Vancouver’s LGBTQ nightlife is concentrated in Davie Village, and two of its most popular nightclubs are Celebrities and Numbers Cabaret . The former has been around since the 1980s, and received a major facelift in 2013 that includes spectacular light, sound, and two VIP areas. True to its name, you’ll catch some big names performing and DJing here, with Fridays generally dedicated to EDM and Saturdays featuring club hits and dancers. The three-level Numbers Cabaret, meanwhile, offers nightly drink specials, and a nightly guest list you can fill out online to get free or discounted admission before 11 p.m.: be sure to sign up before 4 p.m., lest it fill up!

The Pumpjack expanded to double its size in 2014, and hosts numerous parties and events, including “Encore,” Broadway musical piano bar sing-a-longs on Wednesdays. Bonus: Although last call at most Vancouver bars is 3 a.m., some venues and nights are afforded a 4 a.m. extension, which includes Pumpjack’s Saturdays.

Celebrating its 13th year in 2020, Score on Davie is both an LGBTQ sports bar and decadent pub grub eatery, with a unique hook in its over-the-top menu—the Egg MC is topped by an egg, ham, cheese, and English Muffin sandwich with tater tot skewer—which is pure Instagram bait as well as delicious.

Although RuPaul’s Drag Race has yet to spawn a Canadian edition, there’s some formidable, entertaining local drag talent to be seen at The Junction , including Kendall Gender , Carlotta Gurl , celebrity impersonator Jaylene Tyme (don't miss her Dolly Parton!), and Alma Bitches .

Although Vancouver currently lacks a specifically lesbian-designated bar or club, Flygirl Productions presents incredible lesbian parties and events that are "inclusive of all genders, sexualities, ethnicities, and body types."

Diversity in all its beauteous shapes, colors, and sizes is the lifeblood of Vancouver Art & Leisure , which produces an artist-run, non-commercial "Alternate Pride" and special LGBTQ events and parties throughout the year. In September 2019, they helped launch Central Studios , a brand new, multi-level arts and nightlife club for Vancouver's LGBTQ, kink, and alternative communities.

Where to Eat

Although the Michelin Guide has yet to enter Canada, if and when it launches a Vancouver or B.C. edition, Botanist is almost assured a multi-starred status. Located in the waterfront's Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel, and opened in 2017, Botanist's open kitchen dining room serves Executive Chef Hector Laguna's contemporary, Pacific Northwest produce-driven cuisine, bursting with bright and earthy flavors and regional terroir (from fungi to tart flower buds), plus delectable seafood, addictively toothsome house-made pasta, and Provence-inspired Fougasse bread. Wine director Jill Spoor's bottles are outstanding, and don't miss the Botanist's equally terroir-infused "experiential" cocktails, concocted behind glass in the bar's dedicated cocktail lab.

Located right along the waterfront, Miku  is a must for its sauce-topped, scorched aburi oshi-style pressed, triangular sushi, which you can also try at its Yaletown sister venue, Minami , and a newcomer to the Vancouver food scene, Blossom Dim Sum & Grill . Overlooking bustling Robson Street, this second-floor, multi-space Blossom blends East and West (feng shui experts consulted on the interiors, which include dangling, upside-down umbrellas) in both design and Chef Derek Bothwell's menus, a mix of Cantonese dim sum, sushi, and grill integrating local produce and meat and Ocean Wise sustainable seafood . The B.C. Salt Spring lamb chop is insanely tasty and tender.

Other superb, LGBTQ-friendly, and Pacific Northwest-centric options: Kitsilano's 2018 opening AnnaLena , Chinatown Japanese-Italian fusion gem Kitta Tanto , and, when you just want something quick and simple,Vancouver-born artisan sandwich micro-chain Meat & Bread , which makes one of North America's best (if not the best) porchetta sammys.

Where to Stay

With several hotels in Downtown Vancouver, The Fairmont certainly puts their pink dollar where their mouth is. They support and promote several LGBTQ organizations, resources, and events, including the trailblazing HIV/AIDS health and services center, Dr. Peter Centre , and the Queer Film Festival. In 2018 they engaged local drag talent Kendall Gender as Pride Ambassador and head of Fairmont's jubilant float at the 2019 Vancouver Pride parade.

Their downtown properties include the waterfront's architecturally striking, arts-centric 367-room Fairmont Pacific Rim , the nearby 368-room Fairmont Waterfront , and just a few blocks inland, the historic 557-room Fairmont Hotel Vancouver , the latter of which celebrated its 80th Anniversary in 2019 with the completion of a $56 million renovation. Meanwhile, those making an overnight connection at Vancouver Airport (YVR) in nearby Richmond should absolutely consider the Fairmont Vancouver Airport , which boasts all the amenities of its sister properties and way cool tarmac views through its floor to ceiling, miraculously soundproofed windows.

Getting back to the bicycle-friendly thing, a few Vancouver hotels provide free bicycles for guests. These can be on a first come first serve basis, or require advance reservation. Fairmont Pacific Rim falls into the former category (manual bicycles are complimentary, but a recently added fleet of e-bikes incur hourly rental fees).

You can reserve free bikes at Yaletown's incredibly LGBTQ-friendly, chic boutique property Opus Vancouver and downtown's Loden Hotel . A house car service is also available at the Opus, Loden, and Fairmont Pacific Rim, offering complimentary rides to nearby destinations.

Finally, 2017 saw a pair of sleek new hotels open within the Parq casino complex by False Creek. Autograph Collection's 188-room, boutique-y The Douglas (do try their exclusive, locally distilled Douglas Fir-infused gin) and 281-room, 48-suite JW Marriott .

With glowing recommendations from fellow travelers in Portland and Seattle , I could not have been more excited to explore this vibrant Canadian city. Stepping into a different country meant embracing a temporary disconnect from modern technology (my cell phone reception), immersing myself in the timeless art of navigation by map and memory. Life without a modern cellphone is pretty much the only way to actually time travel. Vancouver beckoned with promises of discovery, inviting me to savor every moment.

Where to Stay

We stayed in the perfect townhome in the West End that was walking distance to Stanley Park and Davie Street. Most of the things I researched for Vancouver were in this area and we didn’t really venture out of the West End/Downtown areas. We mostly kept to areas that were in walking distance. Obviously I need to make a trip back and see the rest of the city.

During my visit, I found Vancouver’s food scene to be exciting, diverse, and might tasty.

Our first night in, we headed to  Forage , a farm-to-table restaurant that serves up modern Canadian cuisine. As you may expect, the menu features shareable plates organized as snacks, land, soil, sea, and sweets. For a party of two, our waiter recommended 2-3 plates. This was definitely my favorite meal in the city.

gay tour guide vancouver

For lunch, you’ll absolutely need to stop into  Meat and Bread , a sandwich spot that takes the most classic meal to another level. Not only are these some of the most delicious sandwiches you’ll ever eat, the beauty of the chain is in their simplicity with each location offering a couple of items and a daily special. Plus, their design aesthetic is on point and perfect for Instagram.

gay tour guide vancouver

For low priced breakfast staples, hit up  The Templeton , an adorable vintage diner complete with jukeboxes. Grab a seat at the bar and chow down.

gay tour guide vancouver

Sushi Itoga  offers great sushi in a casual setting. The diner is cozy with communal seating and features an interesting design with white shipping pallets covering the walls and a few Japanese masks on display.

After a busy day of hiking and shopping, we stopped into Gas Town’s  Six Acres  for a happy hour and were not disappointed. It’s a cozy old building with exposed brick walls and an excellent selection of beer, wine, and cocktails.

gay tour guide vancouver

If you’re looking to grab a drink with the family, head on down to Davie Street. Although, you must be warned that most places will have a line to wait in regardless of how full or empty they may be. Our first stop was  1181 . This bar is essentially a hallway and probably best to hit up early for a drink. It wasn’t busy during our visit but I imagine it can be a tight squeeze with a crowd.  Junction  is allegedly the spot for twinks while  Numbers  has a few areas for pool and dancing (and a cast member from Queer as Folk allegedly tends bar).  Score on Davie  gives gay sports enthusiasts a place to watch the game and nosh on bar food.  XY  seemed a little more alternative, greeting us with a bear doorman in a jockstrap and an interesting drag show inside. During our visit, the leather bar  Pumpjack Pub  had the biggest crowd and gave us quite the shower show.

One of my favorite things about the city was the abundance of boutiques and shops.

gay tour guide vancouver

If only I had more room in my luggage and dollars in my bank account. The menswear shop  Nifty Do  sells plenty of lumbersexual apparel, fine leather goods, and selvedge denim. It’s exactly what I want my closet to look like.

gay tour guide vancouver

If you’re looking to outfit the perfect home for a lumbersexual, you’ll want to browse the wares at the general provisions store  Old Faithful Shop . Their goods will have your place looking like a photo spread in  Cereal  or  Kinfolk  magazine in no time.

If you know me at all, you know I’m always trying to make thrift shopping work for me.  Community Thrift and Vintage  is a well curated shop and I picked up a couple of handkerchiefs that I’m trying to incorporate into my outfits as much as possible. It’s only natural for a Texas cowboy.

gay tour guide vancouver

Meadow  is an adorable gift shop that caters mostly to women, but of course that doesn’t keep the gays away. I picked up a dainty waxed linen bracelet as a souvenir of the trip.

We were lucky to be staying so close to the beach and  Stanley Park . We spent an entire day strolling through the park, checking out the rose garden and totem poles. Running along the sea wall made for an amazing morning work out.

gay tour guide vancouver

There’s also some great art on display throughout the city. Be sure to check out  Digital Orca  and  A-maze-ing Laughter , a collection of 14 bronze statues featuring the artist in different phases of hysterical laughter.

gay tour guide vancouver

As I say goodbye to Vancouver, I can’t get over its diverse culinary delights, lively bar scenes, and captivating sights. From the lush greenery of Stanley Park to the beautiful public art, Vancouver will definitely be holding a special place in my travel memories. Until next time, Van!

An LGBT Guide to Vancouver, Canada's Most Gay-Friendly City

By Lawrence Ferber

This image may contain Furniture Couch Living Room Room Indoors Chair Cushion Home Decor Table and Coffee Table

Vancouver, British Columbia is one of Canada’s hottest destinations, seeing record-breaking numbers of visitors. You can put that down to its breathtaking sights, extensive bicycle paths and nature, and easygoing LGBT-friendly populace: in fact, this summer the country celebrates ten years of marriage equality.

Located just down the street from the city’s “gayborhood” of Davie Village, the chic Opus Hotel Vancouver is a hot pick for LGBT travelers, offering easy proximity to gay bars and clubs (plus free rides in the hotel’s car), ideal accommodations for those celebrating LGBT weddings and honeymoons, and support for Pride and other community events. One of Opus's team members is openly gay concierge Caleb Donszelmann, who juggles everything from check-ins to providing guests with use of complimentary bicycles and driving guests to their downtown destinations.

Originally from Alberta, Donszelman moved to Vancouver in 2006 and quickly immersed himself. “We’re called Hollywood North because that industry is booming here,” he shares, “but we’re also known as Canada’s San Francisco because there are so many gay people! You can walk anywhere downtown and see people holding hands.”

A passionate foodie who savors his city and keeps tabs on its evolution, from arts to cocktail culture to nightlife, Donzelman joined Opus just prior to Vancouver’s 2010 Winter Olympics and has been able to put his extensive knowledge of the city to good use. “Opus has always supported gay pride events,” he says. “As an employer they encourage individualism and personality. A guest said that staying at the Opus is like your cool friend giving you the keys to their apartment in the city.”

Here, Donszelman shares the keys to his Vancouver musts.

Little Sisters

This gay bookstore is an institution and has been open since 1983. They’ve trailblazed not only with their efforts for same sex-marriage rights, but also censorship in Canada. They’ve continually been to Canada's Supreme Court to ensure freedom for different kinds of literature. Today they stock books, local art, and sex toys and DVDs. It’s one of the hearts of Davie Village for sure.

Getting there is a bit of a trek, and you can only access it by climbing down like 200 or 300 stairs. Because of that, it’s very secluded. It’s by far one of the best beaches in Vancouver, and gets all this sun, and not a lot of tourists go. It’s big with locals.

This is a really great home store in Gastown, and similar to a CB2 in the U.S. It’s part gay-owned. There’s a fantastic section at the back with plants and “living art” installations by a firm called Kermodi. They really turn plants into art.

Exile Bistro

In the heart of the gay village, this is a small, beautifully decorated restaurant that's just over a year old. It’s all about what they can find in the woods; they physically go out and gather. They have a game fondue with elk. The woman who owns it, Vanessa Bourget, is a holistic nutritionist and previously was head bartender at Nuba, so her cocktails are incredible. They're the most purely medicinal cocktails, so you can’t feel bad about drinking them at all. That’s what I tell myself.

Elbow Room Café

This longtime, gay-owned favorite is known for its sassy, abusive service, where you can playfully banter with the wait staff. We tell guests in advance, "this is what it’s known for, so don’t be surprised." Great breakfast and lunch diner-style food with some fun names for the dishes, like they have an omelet called the Hilary Swank. Tongue-in-cheek, but good.

Vancouver is home to one of Canada’s largest gay communities, and most gay life can be found in the vibrant Davie Village. Positioned in the city’s West End, Davie Village is also conveniently within close proximity to many of Vancouver’s beaches and picturesque Stanley Park. In the heart of Davie Village, you’ll find the now world-famous rainbow crossroads at the intersection of Bute and Davie Streets. From here, a myriad of gay bars, restaurants, and clubs stretch out, catering to the range of different tastes populating the area.

For a bite to eat in the Village, head to Hamburger Mary’s Diner. Positioned right on Davie Street, this place has been serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner to locals and visitors since 1979. Expect huge portions, along with an outdoor patio - the perfect spot to watch locals pass.

For the best gay bars in Vancouver, we suggest stopping by PumpJack Pub . Expect to see all types here, from bears to those who are fully into the leather scene. It is also known for being a very open, friendly establishment, where you can enter knowing no-one, and leave having made a whole new group of friends. Another not-to-miss gay bar in Vancouver is 1181 . 1181 refers to itself as a boutique lounge space, and the clientele here is often beyond slick! Enjoy fancy cocktails along with a smooth soundtrack.

If a couple of drinks on the town are not enough, and you’re ready to up the ante with a dance session, Davie Village won’t disappoint. Celebrities is arguably the best gay club in Vancouver, and it has been at the helm of the scene since the 1980s. Expect local and international DJs spinning anything from house to techno here. XY is also one of the newer clubs on the block, and is making a name for itself thanks to its live drag shows.

8 Fabulously Gay-Friendly & Gay Hotels In Vancouver To Try On Your Next Gaycation!

Queer travel expert Jack Kenworthy turns 250+ city adventures into your guide for safe, vibrant, and inclusively fabulous global journeys.

Set firm as the most populated city in British Columbia and also as one of the most important and famous cities in the entirety of Canada, Vancouver is a flaming hotspot for the country’s tourism and incorporates strong international flairs that are sure to make it interesting and intoxicating for even the most seasoned travelers.

It’s when it comes to queer matters and the city’s attitude towards gay travelers, however, that Vancouver truly shines. This city is, without a doubt, one of the most liberal and welcoming locations in the entire North American continent, and that fact is very clearly demonstrated by both its public and cultural affinity with queer people and their needs.

Vancouver is a tourist’s dream – melding an amazing culinary scene with a unique and multi-faceted sightseeing experience to make it one of the world’s most powerful city experiences. Aside from its famous galleries, cultural sites, and parks, Vancouver also has many other queer-specific attractions.

These include amazing opportunities such as its very own pride parade every August, a large and healthily expanding number of gay bars and clubs for late-night socialization, and – perhaps most importantly of all – an open and calm atmosphere that enables every one of the city’s guests to explore and enjoy the city without having to worry about their safety for a single minute.

The Most Fabulous And Almost - Gay Hostels in Vancouver, Canada

The city is known for its wide-ranging appeal and general kind-heartedness; as such, it would be a crime to view it purely through the lens of where its best gay hotels in Vancouver are. Although there are some truly wonderful places in the world for queer people to explore, with Vancouver being one of them, things that appeal to gay travelers aren’t always necessarily marketed toward them.

We know that, and therefore we’d like to note that the hotels on this list follow the same logic. Most of these wonderful hotels have been listed as accommodating and unjudgmental towards queer people in general and highly rated by previous guests and critics.

The centrally-located Davie Village in the city’s west end is known as the city’s largest hotspot of queer establishments, but that’s not to say that gay activity is limited to this area in the slightest.

There are queer and queer-leaning locations throughout the city’s downtown, and other clubs and food spots around the city are anything but devoid of their sense of style, forward-thinking creativity, and modern grace. With all that said, it’s about time for us to move on from whetting our appetite for travel and get to the true heart of Vancouver’s queer scene – here is a list of the best top eight gay hotels in Vancouver! No matter what the quirks of your taste are, Terminal City has something for you and is just itching to make your stay there one of the most pleasurable gay travel experiences you’ve ever had!

The Most Fabulous And Almost - Gay Hostels in Vancouver, Canada

In this article we will cover...

Sandman Suites Vancouver

Riviera hotel on robson, pan pacific vancouver, cambie seymour hostel, skwachàys lodge indigenous hotel and gallery, barclay house, the douglas, autograph collection, century plaza hotel, gay hotel map of vancouver.

Middling in price and topping out in performance, the Sandman Suites Vancouver serves as a perfect introduction to this list and an amazing fit for those looking for a good yet affordable gay hotel to make their stay in the city.

This hotel truly delivers upon its promises of luxury and exclusive location with a picturesque, tranquil outlook over the coastal line of Vancouver and the span of the city as a whole, and the benefits don’t end with just aesthetics and views either.

The Sandman suites are located directly in the middle of the Davie Village gay neighborhood we mentioned earlier, allowing them unparalleled ties to the city’s queer community and all of its best nightlife locations. There’s no better location for gay tourists enthusiastic about Vancouver’s LGBTQ+ scene.

Sandman Suites Vancouver - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

Some of the many classy and convenient on-paper benefits that the Sandman Suites have to offer to both new and returning guests include its convenient and coveted parking spaces for those arriving with cars, a fitness center for those enthusiastic about exercise, a reservable event hall, and an outdoor pool for enjoying your time in the sun while things are still warm.

On top of all of that, the Sandman Suites are also home to their very own bar and grill by the name of Moxies Davie Restaurant, and foodies will be happy to learn that this eatery is rated just as highly and consistently as the hotel itself – boasting a sterling reputation and a position of pride amongst the local culinary community.

Individual suites at the Sandman building are well-designed, modern, and convenient to check in and out of, including luxuries and comforts such as king beds, expansive and useful kitchenettes, and hot tubs built into the classy bedrooms of some.

The Riviera Hotel on Robson can be summed up in three words – simple, stylish, and brave. Although it only has two stars to its name, the online ratings left by the hotel’s previous guests and their general satisfaction speak volumes about the strength of its quality and the care it gives towards its accommodation experience.

The hotel is nestled comfortably upon the city’s West End coastline and rubs directly up against the Davie Village and its wide range of queer hotspots and gay bars. There’s also a wide range of public transport opportunities nearby, including not one but two bus stops within no more than a minute’s walk from its front door and a large parking lot for those who look to arrive in Vancouver by car.

Riviera Hotel on Robson - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

The Riviera Hotel is also the only hotel on this list that allows pets to be brought inside its rooms, so if you’re traveling with a four-legged companion, then this is certainly one of the best locations for you to take them along without having to worry about extra provisions or separate lodging.

The most important things that must be said when it comes to the individual rooms of the Riviera Hotel on Robson are that they are certainly better than one might expect when their affordable prices are taken into account and that they take advantage of every single inch of space they have.

The downstairs section of the hotel is home to the Riviera Hotel’s very own breakfast bar and dining room, which is later attended in the evening by its excellent restaurant. The hotel is also quite proud of its proximity to several fresh grocery stores and the fact that it offers full kitchens with included cookware in a wide range of upgraded suites and larger rooms.

Shooting straight up from two to five stars with no question whatsoever, the Pan Pacific Vancouver boasts everything from a next-level accommodation experience to a naturally-earned status as one of the city’s most important hotels.

This aristocratic establishment stretches out over the city’s harbor like a pillar of luxury and refinement – boasting a jaw-dropping service record and an equally impressive register of services. For starters, this hotel’s rooms and suites are undoubtedly the best on this list and have views that top even those of the Sandman Suites at the beginning and the Century Plaza Hotel at its end.

Pan Pacific Vancouver - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

Even though it’s a few blocks away from the heart of Vancouver’s gay triangle and the Davie Village, the Pan Pacific Vancouver is officially marked online as LGBTQ+ friendly, and this is just one aspect of its strong commitment as both a hotel and a community center towards queer rights and comfort.

The general Downtown Vancouver area is well known for its wide range of bars, clubs, and nightlife centers that rise to contend with even the glitz and glamor of the Davie Village’s queer clubs, but there’s also a strong daytime atmosphere in the district’s urban streets. Plenty of practical and thrift stores interest you, including many top-shelf fashion chains and other department stores.

The very least that can be said about this hotel is that its five stars are very well earned, and this fact is nowhere clearer than when it comes to the Pan Pacific’s very own spa facilities, its large, comfortable common areas, and – of course – its impressive pool with absolutely stunning views and a position of pride at the very pinnacle of the famous Canada Place.

Pan Pacific Vancouver - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

Now this is a down-to-earth, grassroots gay hotel to die for. Suppose the last location were a bit too big of a fish for you. In that case, you’d rather come back down to modest proportions with something a little more community-orientated, or if your wallet isn’t deep enough to accommodate five stars, then this might be the perfect alternative.

The Cambie Seymour Hostel embodies practicality and affordability, but that doesn’t mean it loses the touch of industrial turned modern that the West End of Vancouver is so famous for.

There are private rooms and shared dormitories available here, and the latter sections of the building contain their very own kitchens and living areas to make the boarding and accommodation experience just that little bit more customizable, convenient, and special.

Cambie Seymour Hostel - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

There’s also breakfast and dinner served downstairs in the comfortable dining room if you’d like to spend your evening hours at the hostel, and a crew of friendly and accommodating hospitality staff that are well known for making it their mission to make everyone feel as welcome and catered to as they possibly can.

Just as we were discussing while covering the Pan Pacific Vancouver that came directly before it, Cambie Seymour’s location in the Downtown district of Vancouver means that it has a perfect balance of access between queer and general-appeal nightlife locations, and this factor serves as the ideal leeway for those who would like a bit more of a broad spectrum to be presented to them upon visiting the city.

Aside from that, there’s also a great variety of eateries and formal restaurants nearby, so no matter your culinary taste, there is bound to be something close for you to indulge in and have the time of your life.

Cambie Seymour Hostel - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

Although – given that we’re on the search for the best gay hotel in Vancouver – we are rather understandably focusing upon the culture and acceptance of the gay and queer communities throughout this list, it is our absolute pleasure to be able to include this rather different location amongst the hotels here.

The Skwachàys Lodge Indigenous Hotel and Gallery is the perfect hideout for those interested in both culture and contemporary, modern accommodation styles, and you needn’t worry about missing out on queer acceptance and being able to feel comfortable as a queer guest while staying here either.

Skwachàys Lodge Indigenous Hotel and Gallery - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

Although its side-focus is upon serving as the highly-rated and much-appreciated boutique hotel that it undeniably is, what makes this location unique is the Aboriginal cultural spotlight and art pseudo-gallery it houses.

An amazing experience to make your way through, at minimum, and even better as a touch that truly takes this location and makes it something else entirely than just a regular hotel. On the service side, breakfast is free here, the rooms are comfortable, and staff attentiveness is top-notch.

On top of the unique style of the Skwachàys Lodge, there’s more than just the contents of the hotel building to boast about when it comes to this region.

Skwachàys Lodge Indigenous Hotel and Gallery is located much closer to the stem of the West End and its connection to mainland Vancouver than most of the other hotels on this list, and this puts it within the warm and interesting reach of the Chinatown district and its large range of culinary and cultural offerings.

The Asian street food and vendors in the region are nothing short of legendary throughout the entire city and are worth a visit or two during your holiday.

Skwachàys Lodge Indigenous Hotel and Gallery - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

Built up within an early 20th-century mansion in one of the calmer and more tree-shrouded avenues of the West End, the Barclay House may seem fairly unassuming and perhaps even residential on the outside, but the truth is that this location is one of the best-designed, most comfortable, and most modern places of accommodation on this list.

The Barclay’s list of useful amenities and service factors is just as expansive as that of the rest of the hotels on this list, if not more so, and it is this alongside many of the other aspects of this hotel’s dedication to quality accommodation that has driven it through so many years of business with incredible success on to forging an excellent relationship with both the LGBTQ+ community and the tourism of Vancouver in general.

Barclay House - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

Breakfast at the Barclay House is just as free and expensive as it is at the DOUGLAS directly after it, and while it may not have five stars, this particular location has one step up on that hotel in the fact that it has free parking and a much greater array of dining and snack varieties.

The Barclay House is also a lot closer to the Davie Village gay quarter than the more expensive hotels that we’ve listed, second only to the establishments such as the Sandman Suites that are located within its borders.

This location is a unique and powerfully managed treat that redefines accommodation norms and what exactly makes a location luxurious by combining calm, genuine hospitality with exquisite quality and a need to please its guests in just about every way that it can help with the materials it has at hand. The Barclay House is worth trying, even based on the merit of its rating and previous reviews alone!

Autograph Collection hotels are very well known for their positive and welcoming attitude towards queer crowds and their impeccable accommodation quality, so if you’re looking for an upper-shelf experience that isn’t quite as forbiddingly expensive as the Pan Pacific earlier on this list, then this could be the perfect fit for you.

The Douglas is mainly famous and accredited for its proximity to the BC Place stadium, over which it has a direct view, but while this is sure to be an amazing advantage for any sports fans visiting Vancouver, you needn’t worry if you’ve come to the city for other reasons.

The queer scene of the Davie Village is just a few roads’ worths of walking away, and if that’s too much, then there’s always the city’s wonderfully functioning bus system to take you where you need to be with zero fuss involved.

The DOUGLAS, Autograph Collection - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

The DOUGLAS has a full five stars to its name, just like the Pan Pacific Vancouver back a few entries ago on this list, but unlike that hotel, and even though it has all of the bells and whistles of a luxury establishment, the DOUGLAS is neither as expensive nor exclusive.

Its roster of available services includes an entirely complimentary daily breakfast buffet, parking spaces and valet services open for guests with cars, a fitness center and gym combination for those looking to keep their workout schedules in one piece, and  – perhaps most importantly – a quaint spa and pool space for deep relaxation and truly letting the feeling of being on holiday sink in.

Suites and individual rooms are accentuated by their included hot tubs, kitchenettes, and attentive room and laundry services – factors that all work towards making your accommodation experience at the DOUGLAS as comfortable and worry-free as possible.

The DOUGLAS, Autograph Collection - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

Sharing the same wonderful views and surroundings as the Sandman Suites that we started this list off with, the Century Plaza Hotel takes us back to our roots in the Davie Village gay neighborhood with its three-star luxury, excellent common spaces, and attentive service.

This officially queer-friendly place of accommodation boasts just about everything that we like to see in a hotel; things only get better once you look past the individual stylish and comfortable rooms.

The Century Plaza Hotel is cited by its previous guests as being one of the best locations to stay at in the entire city for those looking to hook as deeply as they can into Vancouver’s nightlife and queer scene, and its reviews from the queer community as a whole have been high and strong over the entire duration of its service.

Century Plaza Hotel - Best Gay resorts in Vancouver, Canada - best gay hotels in Vancouver, Canada

There’s no better way to enjoy your time soaking in the unique atmosphere of another city than with a hotel that is both confident in what it is doing and armed to the teeth with both convenient and luxurious amenities, and that is precisely what the Century Plaza Hotel sets out to be.

The hotel’s services include a large pool for aquatic relaxation of the best kind, a daily breakfast spread for your morning hunger, a fitness center for workout fans, and even a casual bar for late-evening hangouts and socialization.

In addition to the hotel’s coffee and snacks bar and well-kept streetside sitting area, there’s also an amazing in-house restaurant by the name of C|PRIME Modern Italian Steak and Wine, so if you’re interested in a little curated culinary bliss, then that is yet another aspect of the Century Plaza Hotel that you absolutely cannot miss while on your holiday in Vancouver.

West End, Vancouver

davie . denman . robson

Vancouver’s West End is a fantastic neighbourhood, home to three great commercial streets, Davie, Denman and Robson, high density residential dwellings, gorgeous sandy beaches, stunning parks, hotels, shopping, bars, pubs, nightlife, and a wide range of restaurants serving cuisine from around the world.

F1210008web

Vancouver’s vibrant West End is also one of the city’s most cosmopolitan neighbourhoods, bordered by long stretches of beaches with palm trees on two sides, Stanley Park on another, the shimmering glass towers of downtown to the northeast, surrounded by a spectacular seawall.

Within easy access of all major downtown hotels, and home to a number of hotels itself, the upper Davie Street area is home turf for Davie Village, the world-renowned 24/7 hub for Vancouver’s LGBTQ2+ community, offering a great selection of pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, shops and services.

Now that all restrictions for the pandemic have been lifted, we are delighted to see that many of the large scale world-class annual events in the West End are back with in-person live celebrations, including the Vancouver Pride Parade and Celebration of Light.
