For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

With trips on every continent, Exodus Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Top Trip: Explore under-the-radar Europe by foot on Exodus Travels’ Lakes & Mountains of Slovenia walking tour .

Best Adventure Group Travel: World Expeditions

Groups of hikers walking and camping around the mountains of Kilimanjaro with World Expeditions

World Expeditions has been taking adventurous travelers to remote locations all over the world ever since its first group trek through Nepal in 1975. Today, World Expeditions offers active itineraries on every continent. Intrepid travelers can opt for trips themed around mountaineering, rafting, cycling, hiking, and more.

World Expeditions aims to leave communities and places where they operate tours better than they found them. Trips are created using the company’s Thoughtful Travel Charter as a guideline, which emphasizes respect for the environment, sustainability, having a positive impact on local communities, protecting wildlife, and more.

World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

Top Trip: Summit Africa’s tallest mountain on a fully-supported trek up Kilimanjaro on World Expeditions’ eight day trip up the beautiful Lemosho Route .

Best Budget Group Travel: G Adventures

People visiting famous sites around China with the G Adventures' China Express group travel tour

For travelers on a budget, G Adventures offers cheap group tours that make dream destinations accessible to nearly anyone. (Think: sailing the Galapagos for just $1,124 , criss-crossing India’s Golden Triangle for $559 , or spending 8 days in Bali for less than $800.)

G Adventures is one of the best tour companies for solo travelers as well, as most trips don’t have a single-supplement. You can choose to share a room with another G Adventures solo traveler, or pay extra to have your own space.

G Adventures keeps costs down by opting for cheaper hotels and local meals, and making certain activities optional (for an additional cost). Pick your travel style—options range from “basic” to more luxe tours run in partnership with National Geographic. Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.

Top Trip: G Adventures’ China Express trip is a great way to see the highlights of China if you’re short on both time and budget.

9 Group Travel Companies For Millennials That You Should Have On Your Radar

party travel companies

It's not a secret that millennials love to travel . Whether it's for the Instagram fame, a chance to party, or just the genuine life experience of being in a new place and culture, it's true. In fact, according to research done by Contiki in 2018, the majority of millennials would give up sex for awhile in order to travel the world . Yeah, told you we love to travel! Most millennials in the study were also legitimately willing to temporarily give up Netflix, booze, and coffee in exchange for travel, too, and that's saying a lot. I mean... coffee?

But another interesting quirk in the millennial travel game is our apparent penchant for more adventure-based trips. Many young travelers reportedly opt for hostels or vacation rentals over hotels, making for a more authentic experience, and they are also more likely to seek off-the-beaten-path experiences.

Another thing millennial travelers are into? Group trips. "One of the latest trends in travel is the guided small-group excursion, tailored to give a pack of like-minded young people an immersive experience in a destination," explained Newsday . Group travel packages have a reputation for catering toward an older crowd, featuring trips that check off the boxes of every predictable touristy destination in town. But due to their interest in travel and the difficulty involved in aligning schedules and budgets with a group of friends, millennials have embraced and revitalized the group-of-solo-travelers trend, resulting in a surge of travel companies catering to this generation and organizing international trips specifically for young people.

Check out some of the travel companies for millennials that are curating epic, unique, and adventurous trips for groups of young solo travelers — and start saving up that PTO for a trip of your own.

Contiki (the company behind the sex/Netflix/booze/coffee stats above) curates worldwide trips exclusively for 18-35 year olds. Their motto is "travel with no regrets," which we can get behind — and they offer hundreds of different trips to destinations on nearly every continent. They also have a student discount available, for all you millennial scholars out there.

For The Love Of Travel

For The Love Of Travel is a boutique travel company that offers unique curated group trips for people ages 25-39. "[W]e embrace the idea of 'slow travel,'" the company explained on its site. "That is, having an authentic cultural experience that connects us with the soul of the destination and people we can relate to." Check out their incredible selection of experiences .

Under 30 Experiences

Under 30 Experiences is an adventure travel company aimed toward solo travelers who are — you guessed it — under the age of 30 (with a minimum travel age of 21). But they're not too strict about it: Most guests are apparently between 21-35, and the company says they usually serve "professionals, creative types, ambitious students, entrepreneurs, and motivated young people just figuring it out."

Aimed exclusively at young professionals, Travendly is a group travel company that thoughtfully puts together tribes of like-minded young people (usually in their mid-twenties to late thirties) for ultimate travel enjoyment. With more than a dozen curated trips to countries around the globe , there's something for everyone.

G Adventures' 18-To-Thirtysomethings

The collection of 18-To-Thirtysomethings tours offered by travel company G Adventures are described as"fast-paced and affordable adventures designed for young travellers." Their goal is to create exciting, adventure-based trips that young solo travelers can actually afford, so check out their offerings of trips to destinations around the world .

Travel company Topdeck organizes trips for 18 to 30-something year olds, and the company's passion is to "inspire young people through life-changing travel experiences." The group trips are made specifically for solo travelers who are looking for fun and adventures, and they offer trips all around Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Australia.

Group travel company Flash Pack curates unique and stylish trips for anyone in the millennial age bracket. Their trips are designed for solo travelers in their late 20s through 40s who are looking for an actually authentic and adventurous experience, and they specialize in high-quality, flexible, boutique accommodations.

Intrepid's 18 To 29s Adventures

This is for those of us on the younger side of the Millennial canon. Formerly known as Gecko, the 18 To 29s Adventures offered by group tour & travel company Intrepid . While they are strict with the age range, these tours are specially designed to be suited to young travelers and focus on local adventures, making their trips sustainability-minded.

EF Ultimate Break

Travel company EF Ultimate Break offers more than 65 different trips made for every travel style, and cater to solo travelers who are ages 18 to 29 for group trips. Unlike many other companies, flight costs are built into its trips, so once you pay (or get on a payment plan) you'll be all set to go, making it super easy for busy millennials.

These Group Travel Companies Are PERFECT If You Want To Make Friends While Traveling Solo

How do you make friends while traveling solo? What are the best group travel companies for young travelers? Why should you use group travel companies?

Does anyone else suffer from solo travel stage fright?

I know so many women who have started planning their dream vacation for a solo adventure but got cold feet and missed out. And I get it; being completely alone in a new destination can be super scary.

But luckily, there's an easy solution if you want to travel solo without traveling alone: group travel companies!

Why should you use a group travel company?

There's this idea that being a solo traveler of any type means you need to be able to do everything by yourself…

And that is totally wrong.

Being a solo traveler simply means you are willing to go visit a new destination alone. Sometimes you'll explore that place solo, and sometimes you'll meet new people to hang out with!

Group travel companies are a phenomenal way to dip your toes into the solo travel waters. They plan most of the logistics for you, offer you big deals on bucket-list trips, and 9 times out of 10 you'll make a bunch of new friends on the way. It's a stress-free strategy if you want to see the world, but don't have anyone to go with.

The best group travel companies for solo travelers

I asked the Young Travelers Network to tell me about their experiences with group travel companies, and they 👏🏽delivered👏🏽.

Not only did they pick their favorite out of the most popular companies, but they also provided some detailed stories about what to expect from different organizations. Some are perfect for a week-long yacht party in the Mediterranean, while others are better if you need a budget-friendly summer trip.

All of the advice came from young, solo female travelers who use these companies as a way to travel to different places alone, but then meet up with a big group when they arrive.

No more letting your travel nerves ruin your vacation plans. Whether you're starting solo travel for the first time, or just want to try something new, these companies have tons of cool options for young nomads.

I'm ranking them based on their affordability ( One 💸 = not affordable, luxury trips; five 💸 = super affordable options), how many destinations they travel to, and what vibes you can expect with their group trips.

Now, let's get into it.

🪂 Intrepid Travel: For the purpose-driven solo traveler

AFFORDABILITY:

💸💸💸💸💸

DESTINATION OPTIONS:

✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️

BEST VIBES FOR:

Life-changing immersive trips 🏯

As someone who openly raves about studying abroad, immersive cultural experiences, and travel being a life-changing opportunity, I can't recommend Intrepid Travel enough.

Intrepid is for all my fellow solo female travelers who want to go on purpose-driven trips. You're not just looking to chill on a beach and drink margaritas all day. You're looking to see the world, learn about other cultures, meet new people, and have a trip that will forever impact you.

I recently did a trip with them to Costa Rica that absolutely blew my mind. It was intimate, well-organized, safe, and had an interesting itinerary mix from learning about Caribbean gospel history, explore their culture of masquerade/celebrations, to ziplining and photo shoots on black sand beaches!

party travel companies

Not only does Intrepid have tons of travel themes (like trips specifically for anyone 18-29), but they also have four different styles so you can easily find the group travel option that works for you. From Premium luxury excursions to the “Basix” budget-travel option, they have a huge price range to choose from.

They also cover over 1,000 unique locations in 100 countries, so you're kinda spoiled for choice here. For me, Intrepid is the go-to group travel company.

🎉 Contiki: The best option for the ultimate party vibe

💸💸💸

A party you'll never forget 💃🏽

If you're looking for a good time, like popping bottles and living it up a good time, then  Contiki is a great option. The company operates in all corners of the world, from New Zealand to Latin America to the Middle East.

Tours with Contiki are open for ages 18-35, but groups are typically made up of 20-somethings who like to explore nightlife options, party with locals, and enjoy each destination as thoroughly as possible. If you're feeling like a social butterfly, this may be the group for you! Here's what Matthew had to say about his trip:

I’ve only done a Contiki but I had a great time and actually booked another tour with them for December…Met some great friends that I still talk to on a regular basis! Matthew Walther, Young Travelers Network member

Plus, over 60% of people who book with Contiki are solo travelers. So don't worry about showing up and being the only one who doesn't know anybody.

I do think Contiki can be a little less affordable than other group travel companies, but most of their tours are also in extremely sought-after cities where you'd be spending more if you did the trip independently. Plus, they have flash travel deals if you're looking to get a discounted experience!

Abu Dhabi Press Trip

💸 Topdeck: best for budget travelers

AFFORDABILITY :

💸💸💸💸

NUMBER OF DESTINATIONS:

✈️✈️✈️

Getting a bucket list trip that's worth every penny 🙏🏽

Now if you're looking to get the most for your money,  Topdeck Travel might just be it. In fact, the value of their trips is one of the first things their website promises.

Will you be investing in a vacation? Yes! But will that vacation be worth it? YES.

One traveler said she explored Europe for 28 days for only $2,800 😳 Here's everywhere she went during that trip:

[We] started in London, then to Paris, Mont Saint Michel, Bordeaux, San Sebastian, a few other Spanish towns I can’t remember the name of, Madrid, Barcelona, Sardinia (WHICH WAS AMAZING), Corsica, Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Venice, Liechtenstein, Lauterbrunnen (favorite destination of the trip), Kirchdorf, the Rhun’s Valley, Amsterdam (with a stop at a small town on the way to see a family owned cheese factory and see how clogs are made!) and then back to London! Zoe Kate, Young Travelers Network member

Now I know that number might look big, but she visited at least 18 cities, and multiple countries, with a full itinerary planned out, including accommodations and transportation.

All for $2800?

…I've seen one plane ticket to Australia cost more than that. I will say, they have a more limited selection when it comes to destinations, but there are still a good amount of options around the world to explore. Definitely worth taking a look!

🌿 G Adventures: sustainable AF

BEST VIBES FOR :

The sustainable solo traveler 🌿

G Adventures prides itself on small, sustainable group adventures around the world. Their business model is built around supporting local communities, a mantra they've had for 30+ years of operation!

You'll be led through destinations by their Chief Experience Officers, a locally based guide who knows the region better than anyone else. Every trip at G Adventures directly benefits the local economy and communities, while also giving you memories that will last a lifetime!

They also distinguish their tours by destination as well as travel style, so you have a few ways to find your dream trip. From wellness travel to living like locals to railway trips and even a category dedicated to young travelers exclusively, G Adventures offers a good variety for solo travelers.

Bonus: If you can pull together your own friend group for a private trip, you could earn 50% off your spot, or even a completely free vacation for yourself! Time to text the group chat… 📱😗

🗺 EF Ultimate Break: voted most popular group travel company for Gen Z

A main character vacation 😏

Now I'm not personally picking favorites; there's no “winner” in this list. Every single one of these group tour companies is amazing, and has a solid reputation according to solo travelers!

In the poll,  EF Ultimate Break received the most consistent, positive feedback from members who'd done their trips in the past. The company is highly organized, especially pre-departure, so you'll get frequent updates about your itinerary.

They have specialized trips for backpackers and solo travelers, opportunities to become brand ambassadors, trips for bougie babes, and more lowkey options if your easy going.

I’ve done a few trips with them and I think there’s a great mix of people and things to do. I don’t typically drink that much and I always find people who are along the same lines, but we still have tons of fun!  Kari Rogers, Young Travelers Network member

When it comes to their prices, not one person said their trip was not worth the cost. If you can splurge a little extra for a trip, you'll definitely be treated to a trip that's as valuable as what you paid for.

In general, EF has a lot to offer and has earned an impressively high rating from people all over the world.

To travel independently? Or to travel as part of the group? That is the (cheesy) question!

Okay, if you know this website/blog, you’ll know that it focuses on tips for independent world travel (without an excursion or tour) that let you travel long-term even if you are on a tight budget. It’s just that you need the time and planning to be able to prepare an entire trip yourself.

But I know that some people either don’t like or don’t have the time to prepare all that they need for a trip by themselves ( flights , accommodation , itinerary , transportation , travel insurance , etc….).

In this case, my suggestion is to travel as part of a group tour. Then, basically all the most important parts of your trip will already be taken care of and organized and all you’ll have to do is relax and enjoy.

And there’s nothing wrong with traveling as part of a tour group (even if that’s not something we usually focus on here). You still can have a travel experience that is incredible, all-encompassing, and authentic whether you go on your own or with a tour.

The problem is knowing which company and type of tour to do.

I say this because there are “TOUR GROUPS,” and there are “ tour groups .” In other words, not all tour companies around the world are created equally. And that’s why below we selected some of the best-known and highest-rated tour companies on the market. In other words, they are great travel alternatives if backpacking during your holidays isn’t really your thing.

(But if you want to save money or travel on a tight budget, just keep in mind that it will almost always be a lot cheaper to travel independently. If that’s more your aim, then just follow the sequence on this page to begin planning your next trip yourself.)

The 5 Best Tour Companies for International Travel Around the World

  1. g adventures.

G Adventures type of tours: Fun, relaxed or adventure trips

G Adventures is one of the biggest tour companies for small group travel in the world. They focus on adventure travel at a relatively low cost compared to other companies. They have more than 650 different excursions/adventure tours on all 7 continents! Yes, even to Antarctica (just in case anyone forgot this was a continent ?) and the Arctic (though this doesn’t get to be a continent because it’s basically just a block of ice ☹). And they have guided tours of all kinds: Active, YOLO (for young people aged 18-39), Family, Classic, etc…in other words, you’ll definitely find a tour that’s right for you!

And I, personally, really like the way they give the search results – with maps and tour itineraries – that show you exactly what you’re going to do. This makes it easy to compare different tours.

  2. Intrepid

Intrepid type of tours: Fun, relaxed or adventure trips

Along with G Adventures, Intrepid is another one of the biggest international tour operators for adventure travel on the market, offering more than 800 itineraries around the planet. With them, you’ll travel in small groups of lots of adventure and minimal frills. In some cases, depending on the type of excursion (such as a camping excursion), it’s expected that you’ll help prepare dinner together with the other travelers. Don’t worry, all will be explained and led by your guide!

I did a tour similar to this in the middle of the desert in Australia and it was awesome! It helps you build a connection with your group which makes the tour that much better. And like G Adventures, Intrepid also has tours of all kinds such as Family, Biking, Wildlife, etc…it’s hard not to find something you like.

Viagens de aventura

  3. Contiki

Contiki type of tours: trips with a focus on partying, having fun and relaxing

Contiki is famous for organizing guided trips for young people aged 18-35 (they are actually one of the tour companies that don’t allow people outside this range). And they are well-known by one thing: the parties!

With Contiki, a day of visiting tourist attractions in Europe or Australia will usually end in partying, booze and uh…..well, there’s a reason some people call it Sextiki. I’m not saying this based on my opinion, but just google around and you’ll find the same thoughts.

So, Contiki may not be for everyone…but if you’re are traveling alone and beyond tourism also want to meet people from around the world and party, Contiki is the tour company for you! There’s a reason why their catchphrase is #NOREGRETS.

But this doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy Contiki if traveling as a couple or if you aren’t a big partier, but you should know upfront kind of what to expect.

They have tour groups going to the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and Latin America, etc…but they are especially awesome for European tours.

  4. Young Pioneer Tours

(mention code DPRKOUT )

YPT type of tours: low-key trips to exotic and hard to reach places

If you’ve read our article about How to Visit North Korea on a Budget , you’ll see that we visited one of the world’s most closed-off countries with Young Pioneer Tours. This is because YPT is a tour company that specializes in, according to them, “budget tours to destinations your mother would rather you not go to.” Places like Turkmenistan, Eritrea, Iran, Transnistria (actually, I visited this last one by myself in one of my Europe trips and wrote about it here ), and other infamous places that are difficult for tourists to get to.

So if you are on the lookout for adventure and uncommon destinations, I’d recommend taking a look at their website.

When booking with Young Pioneer Tours, mention the code DPRKOUT while making your booking to get a free t-shirt and an exclusive North Korea travel guide. Also valid for trips to destinations beyond North Korea.

  5. Tourradar

Tourradar type of tours: tour search engine with all kinds of excursions and travel packages

Unlike the options above, Tourradar doesn’t actually offer their own tours. Instead, they are a big aggregator (or online marketplace) that lists guided tours from companies around the world.

On the website, you can search for and book group tours/packages from more than 500 different operators.

So, if you want to make things easy, just put in the destination you’d like to visit, the month, and the year and Tourradar will give you a gigantic list of guided tour options of all kinds.

During your search, you can also filter by price, duration, age range, style, etc…which makes finding affordable tours pretty easy.

Something that I think is really cool about Tourradar is that they have a section with the best festival tours around the world – like the Tomatina in Spain, Exit in Serbia, Oktoberfest in Germany, and even tours to Carnival in Rio de Janeiro!!

Another great thing about them is that they are always giving away free trips. To enter in one of the contests, just click this link here  or the picture below, put in your name and email….and that’s it! Good luck!!

  6. Encounters Travel

7 Best Small Group Tour Companies for International Travel around the World

Encounters Travel Type of Tours: Innovative tours to open-minded people

Encounters Travel is an English company with more than 50 years of experience. The company’s focus is saving money combined with the enjoyment of its customers, considering the cultural aspects of each country.

So to not exclude anyone, the groups have a maximum of 20 travelers, in addition to offering a private tour service, where prices can be a little more expensive, but ideal for those who prefer to travel alone.

With Encounters Travel, it is also possible to customize excursions, in case you are in a group of friends who want to deviate a little from the itinerary planned by the company. They are great for college, school, clubs or association outings.

The company’s website is super intuitive, divided into several categories that make it easier to decide the perfect trip for you. There’s also a section of the site dedicated to booking last-minute trips, in case you’re one of those people who doesn’t like to plan too far in advance!

7 Best Small Group Tour Companies for International Travel around the World

  7. Trafalgar Tours

Trafalgar type of tours: exclusive travel focused on luxury, convenience, and comfort for selective travelers

Well, as you probably already know, this website/blog isn’t exactly focused on guided trips of luxury and comfort. But, although the tour companies listed above will already be a lot more comfortable than an independent trip weighed down with your own backpack, they tend to attract travelers that are a bit more adventurous and low-key.

But if your travel style is more about relaxing, luxury, and comfort, I recommend you check out Trafalgar. Trafalgar is one of the oldest, most renowned, and exclusive tour operators in the world. They offer more than 230 different itineraries around the world that can also be tailor-made for even the most selective of travelers.

If this sounds like you, take a look at their site and get a tour quote to see if the options are to your taste and style.

BONUS: Solo Female Travelers Tours

SFT Tours type of tours: excursions around the world in small groups for women only

Solo Female Travelers Tours is a women’s company that caters exclusively to the female audience. The intent of this is to create comfortable, safe, and reliable adventures for their clients in places that would not normally be very accessible to solo travelers.

SFT Tours has small group tours to Iceland, Tuscany, Tanzania, Sudan, Mongolia, and Antarctica. Their trips are quite varied, ranging from luxury tours in the Italian countryside to extreme adventures like climbing Kilimanjaro and motorcycle expeditions through Mongolia (see here 25 Interesting Things I Learned While Traveling in Mongolia ).

By booking an expedition with them you will be connected with other women traveling solo, which is a great opportunity to create new friendships. All Solo Female Travelers Tours prioritize companies created and led by women with a mission to help empower women around the world.

So, should I travel with a tour group or by myself?

Pros of traveling with a group tour.

  • As mentioned above, almost everything will be organized for you . So, just relax and enjoy!
  • If you don’t want to travel alone but don’t have a friend or family member to go with you, going with a pre-arranged group will take care of that.
  • You can feel safer because you’ll always be with a guide. In other words, you won’t find yourself lost in the middle of the city or getting cheated by that taxi driver in Santiago del Chile while in an escorted tour.
  • You can access places that are almost “closed” to independent tourists. As an example, we had to visit North Korea with a tour – we explain it here if you want to do the same. The same thing is true of Iran for American and British citizens.
  • It’s easier to get a visa for certain countries. In other words, it’ll often be easier to apply for a visa and have it approved if you already have a tour booked and paid for.
  • Group tours are a great way to meet people and make friends from around the world! Since the tour companies are international, you won’t just be traveling with people from your own country (you can do that at home) . You can find 11 tips to make friends while traveling in our article here .
  • Most of the recommended tour companies here give you some “me time” that’ll let you have some time to explore on your own during the tour. But in some places, like North Korea , this won’t be true as you must always be with a guide. Remember that there’s also the possibility of doing extra travel tours during those “me time” periods if you prefer.
  • It’s guaranteed that you’ll stay in quality and pre-reserved accommodations (so you don’t have to worry about sleeping on a bench in that park in Banff, Canada because it was Easter and everything was full….which I totally don’t know from experience or anything).
  • You’ll have help and support in the case of sickness, theft, loss, accident or any other unexpected problem that can happen during your trip.

Pacotes América Latina

Cons of Traveling with a Group Tour

  • Traveling in a group can be frustrating . Not everyone always gets along and sometimes they’ll be disagreements or little cliques. But in general, the type of people who decide to travel with a lot of the tour companies below are open-minded and easy to deal with.
  • If you like having your space, being in a tour group isn’t ideal. Even if the tours suggested below do give you some time to relax and explore by yourself, the “me time” isn’t unlimited.
  • Going with a group tour is almost guaranteed to be more expensive than traveling, planning, and reserving everything yourself.
  • If you end up in a group with an average age different from your own , it can be a bit irritating. Heterogeneous groups with different ages are common on many tours and it’s interesting to hear about different life experiences. But if you’re 21 and the average age of your group is 60, it’s not so interesting.
  • You have to be patient with that couple that is always late to breakfast in the morning or nearly misses the bus after each stop. But this is all part of traveling in a group tour….so, don’t be “THAT couple!!”
  • On that note, remember that you have responsibilities of being a part of the group and you can’t just “do what you want” like you could if you were traveling alone.
  • You are stuck with your group’s schedule . Outside of the “me time” allotted, if you want to catch the bus and stick with the group, you have to follow the schedule. Think the current museum is boring? You have to stay there until the set time is finished. Want to spend more time at the beach? You’ll be cut short when your group starts leaving you behind.

How Do I Choose the Best Tour and Group Travel Company for Myself?

There’s a bunch of factors you need to consider:

  • Type of tour: Since you’ll find tours of all types offered by the companies below, choose the one you’re most interested in: city, train, adventure, cycling, festivals , camping, beach, historical, etc…
  • The age range of tours: If you are 24, you probably don’t want to be part of a tour with the average age of 62! Same idea the other way. Being the oldest person in a tour with a bunch of 23-year-olds that are out late partying every night isn’t that great.
  • Cost of additional activities: In general, the tour packages mentioned below will cover all accommodation and transportation and some of the food and attractions. However, there are almost always additional costs that could be added on during the trip. Things like riding a camel, diving , learning to surf, etc… and if everyone else on the tour is doing it, you probably don’t want to be the only one watching from the sidelines. So, see what the possible extra costs could be (beyond the price of the tour) to make sure they fit into your trip’s budget.
  • Amount of free time: Some people like to do activities with the group all day long (to make the most of what they paid for). But others like some time to head out a bit on their own to explore the city or just relax without their guide at their side. You can usually see how much “me time” or free days you’ll have by looking at a tour’s itinerary.
  • Atmosphere: This is similar to the idea of age above. Some tours are completely focused on young people and partying (I’m talking about you, Contiki !), and others revolve more around history, museums, and cities like a European tour. Then, there are others still with more adventure and less fuss. Research well before deciding!
  • Reviews: As with everything online, you can also find reviews for tours and tour companies. Some reviews are on the company website itself, others you’ll have to search online for. It’s always good to hear what other travelers who’ve actually been on the tours thought of the company, the destination, and the itinerary.
  • Level of physical activity: In almost all of the tours you might check out, there’ll be a level of physical activity number from 1 to 5 (with 1 being the lowest level, and 5 being the highest level). In other words, if you aren’t super active, I wouldn’t try to travel during your vacations with a tour that’s going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (likely a level 5 on that scale). On the other hand, if you are someone who’s in good shape and likes to exercise, a level 5 tour might be ideal for you. Personally, I love combining travel with exercise !
  • Group size: On average, the companies below work with groups sizes that average 10 people. But there are sometimes bigger groups…though usually not bigger than the number needed to fill up a bus. Check the info about each tour if group size is important to you.
  • Length & dates: This should seem obvious, but worth mentioning! If you can only have very specific days off work, you’ll have to make sure that the tour you want fits into this timeframe. Otherwise, if you have a big enough group, you may be able to arrange your own group tour with the dates of your choice.

How Should I Prepare for my Group Tour (and Save Some Extra Money While I’m at it)?

  • Research and compare the cost of plane tickets yourself . Sometimes, you can buy your plane ticket with the company that you’re doing your tour with (like a tour package), but it’s also worth checking to see if you can find something better yourself. Research and compare what you find with the price the tour company is quoting you to see the best option. If you search yourself online, our article with 16 tips to save on flights can help.
  • Explore different options for travel insurance before purchasing. Just like with flights, usually, you can either buy travel insurance directly with the same company you are buying the tour with, or buy it yourself. To do some research yourself, be sure to check out our article with the 3 best and cheapest travel insurance companies on the market ! And just remember: it’s obligatory to have travel insurance to participate in a tour and you’ll be asked to show proof of the insurance before your trip begins.
  • Try to arrive a few days early in the place where your tour will start. Maybe consider staying around few extra days afterward to relax, as well. This makes sure you aren’t late, can have some time to prepare….and see a new place!
  • If you arrive early or stay late after your tour, book accommodation in advance ! The majority of tour companies will offer some options for hostels/hotels to stay in before or after your trip. Obviously, they’ll earn some extra commission by making a reservation in your name. So, if you want to save in this aspect, consider booking something yourself . Then, you’ll be able to see all of the possible options (and not just the ones the company will push on you). Check out our article with the 6 best websites to find and reserve your hotel or hostel to help.
  • Decide between a shared room or a private room. In most cases, if you are traveling alone, you’ll be put in a room with another solo traveler of the same gender. But if you want to stay in a room alone, you’ll have to pay a bit extra for a “single room supplement.”
  • Be careful with the size of your bag or backpack. Just as with aircrafts, buses, boats, or trains, you’ll probably have a weight limit (about 20 kg) for the bag you bring on the tour.
  • Plan ahead for your passport or visas. The entire process of getting a passport or visa is normally done by the travelers themselves and not by the company that organizes the tour. But as I mentioned, one benefit of going with a tour is that it’s easier to get a visa than if you were going alone.

The 11 Best Cities for Partying

A turntable at a rave with neon lights

Some people travel to explore ancient historical sites , others to sample the culture or food or language of new and exciting destinations.

And, sometimes, people travel to party.

When it comes to budget backpacking , one of the most common ways travelers break the ice is over a drink. Or two. Or three.

Whether it’s at bars, clubs, lounges, beach parties, or just in small groups sitting around talking while sipping a bottle of wine, alcohol — for better or worse — is often a staple of life on the road.

If you’re looking to embrace your wild side and party hard with other travelers, here’s my thoroughly researched list. I’ve been to over one hundred countries and have drunk heavily around the world, so I know a good party when I see one!

If you are looking to party when you travel, visit one of these places:

Table of Contents

1. Bangkok, Thailand

2. barcelona, spain, 3. rome, italy, 4. prague, czechia, 5. miami, florida, 6. sydney, australia, 7. ios, greece, 8. bali (kuta), indonesia, 9. florianópolis, brazil, 10. ko phangan, thailand, honorable mentions.

Blurred photography of a busy street at night in Bangkok

Visiting Bangkok won’t do anything good for your liver, but the city is a must for backpackers and partiers. Besides Khao San Road, there’s Patpong, Thong Lor, Silom (Smalls, a speakeasy cocktail bar, is my favorite in this area), and the new cocktail scene in Chinatown. Bangkok truly has a party for everyone.

Just remember to stick to beer if you’re on a budget. Cocktails and wine are mostly imported with high taxes and therefore cost a lot more than the local beer.

Where to Stay : Mad Monkey Hostel – A backpacker institution near Khao San Road, this hostel has a restaurant, pool, and tour desk with some of best prices in town.

For more hostel suggestions be sure to check out my list of best hostels in Bangkok. And, to find out exactly where in the city you should stay, here’s a post that breaks down the best neighborhoods in Bangkok.

People chilling on the beach in Barcelona, Spain

Where to Stay : Kabul Party Hostel – This is one of my favorite hostels in Europe . It’s a full-on party place, where they organize nightly events and pub crawls. It’s super social and really easy to meet people here.

For more hostel suggestions, check out my complete list of the best hostels in Barcelona , and to figure out what area of the city you should stay in, check out this guide to the best neighborhoods in the city.

People sitting on stairs near the sidewalk bars in Rome

Where to Stay : Alessandro Palace Hostel and Bar – A party hostel that’s also one of the cheapest places to stay in the city, there’s not one but two bars here with cheap drinks (including one on the roof). It’s just 5 minutes from the Termini station too.

For more hostel suggestions, check out my list of the best hostels in Rome , and to learn more about the different areas of the city (such as the best ones for nightlife), here’s a post that breaks down the best neighborhoods in Rome.

Tourists crowding a bridge in Prague, Czechia

Where to Stay : MadHouse – This place really lives up to its name — it truly is a madhouse! The décor includes very cool murals, giving the hostel a very unique feel and the knowledgeable staff organizes events every night.

For more hostel suggestions, check out my complete list of the best hostels in Prague!

People dancing at a beach party in Miami, USA

Check out E11even (where the party is 24/7), LIV Miami (the city’s most famous), or Basement (complete with an ice-skating rink and bowling lanes). There is usually a $30-60 USD cover to get in and most drinks are at least $15-20 USD so be prepared to splash out, though even on a backpacker budget, you’ll be able to find some fun. Maybe you’ll even run into a celebrity or two.

Where to Stay : Viajero Miami – Located in South Beach, this hostel offers a host of amenities, including three swimming pools. The poolside bar is a great place to hang out and meet people and it’s also located just a block from the beach.

People partying in a pool in Bali

Where to Stay : Clandestino – This hostel has a second-floor restaurant/bar that always seems to be bustling, as well as a pool complete with a swim-up bar. All the dorm beds come with lockers, lamps, electrical outlets to charge your phone, and curtains for privacy.

If you’re here during February for Carnival, the streets fill with revelers dancing, having parades, and enjoying street food and copious drinks. (Just book your accommodation well in advance if you plan to come here during this time.)

Where to Stay : The Search House Beachfront Hostel – Offers private beach access, a pool, surfboard rentals and connections for lessons, and an outdoor bar with a daily happy hour. The staff are very welcoming and there’s a hostel WhatsApp group to meet other travelers.

A fire dancer on Haat Rin beach in thailand

(But if I had to say more, I would also say that there are jungle parties, half-moon parties, people getting wild on the beach, going down slides, and playing tons of drinking games. It’s one of the biggest party places in the entire region. )

Where to Stay : Bodega Hostel – A lively party hostel with tons of social activities going on. This is the quintessential backpacker party place, with pub crawls, beach volleyball, a swimming pool, a huge bar/lounge area, and events almost every night.

The beaches of Cancun, Mexico

Where to Stay : Mayan Monkey Hostel – Located in the heart of the Hotel Zone, this is a bumping party hostel with themed nights, live music, and other social activities (like beer pong and jenga), a bar on-site, plunge pool, and great views over the ocean.

These are just some of my favorite places in the world to have fun and party. Other destinations that I’d recommend are:

  • Las Vegas, USA (duh)
  • Montreal, Canada
  • Budapest, Hungary
  • Krakow, Poland
  • San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua
  • Queenstown, New Zealand

Not only are these great party destinations, but they are some of my favorite cities in the world . If you are looking to cut loose and flex your party muscles, be sure to check out these cities. They are some of the best places to party in the world!

Note : I know Ibiza is a great place to party so before everyone asks why I didn’t include it on the list here’s why: It’s pretty much club central so if you aren’t a clubber, then Ibiza isn’t a good place. Plus, I didn’t want a list loaded with just Europe and Asian destinations.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a private tour.

The definition for a private tour is an itinerary run exclusively for you and your family or friends. On a private trip, everybody you travel with will be somebody you know. Private tours are more flexible when it comes to your group size, travel dates and what your trip includes.

What is the difference between public and private tours?

Public tours run on scheduled dates, whereas a private tour can depart on any date that suits you. Anyone can join a private tour, whereas a private tour is exclusively just you and your friends or family. Public tours have a limited group size, whereas private tours can have as many or few guests as you like.

What does a private tour include?

Private tours with Classic Journeys include:

  • Local tour guide, English speaking
  • Luxury hotels with invisible check in
  • Meals with wine
  • Private access events
  • Your wish list

How do I book a private tour?

1.    Complete our private trip planning form 2.    One of our Travel Experience Specialists will phone you to make sure we have everything on your wish list. 3.    We send you a bullet pointed itinerary and pricing for your review. 4.    You approve the itinerary and pricing, or make any edits that you want. 5.    Reserve your trip of a lifetime with a deposit.

How much does a private tour cost?

Every private tour is priced differently because it’s completely unique. For an idea of how much your trip will cost, complete our private trip planning form and we’ll get back to you with the details.

Are private tours expensive?

Guests are often pleasantly surprised that Classic Journeys can offer a private departure for less than you would pay for another company’s standard tours. In some cases, we can even offer a private departure for less than you would pay for other companies’ standard tours. The starting point—the published price of a Classic Journeys public tour—is lower than what many companies charge for their comparable tours.

How long is a private tour?

A long weekend tour can be three or four days, while a round-the-world trip might take several months! The best thing about private tours is that they can be completely planned around how long you want to travel. Let us know the duration that works best for you, and we’ll create an amazing itinerary to fill it.

How are custom tours created?

Classic Journeys is relatively unique in that we work with local guides and hoteliers in the region that you’re planning to visit. Once you’ve told us your wish list, our Tour Operations team get to work, brainstorming with our own team of local guides to handcraft your itinerary for you.

Can I choose the destination for my private tour?

Yes! We can create an itinerary entirely tailored to the destination, or destinations you want to visit. Whether it’s a country you’ve seen on our website, or somewhere no one seems to run scheduled trips.

Can I choose the activities for my private tour?

Yes! Let us know if there are any specific activities you want to enjoy on your tour, we can also suggest our favorite things to do and see in your destination, based on decades of experience.

Can I choose the accommodation?

Yes! If you have a specific hotel or lodge in mind that you would like to stay in, we can incorporate it into your tour. We have great relationships with the best hotels all over the world, so there is a good chance your chosen hotel is one with whom we already have a relationship.

Is my private tour guided?

Yes, all private tours are led by our local guides, who live in the destination you’re visiting and have better insider knowledge than anyone. If you want to explore independently on some days, we can incorporate this into your itinerary

How do I find a private tour guide?

Our trips include a private tour guide, who’s there throughout your trip. Tours by locals is one of the things that set our trips apart from other companies, who fly in tour leaders who don’t understand the region like a local does, or have local guides who are only around for parts of your trip.

Can my private trip include a destination wedding?

Yes. We can arrange one of our amazing travel itineraries around your dream wedding ceremony, or create a custom destination wedding trip completely from scratch. With over a quarter century of travel experience, and insider expertise from local guides who live in our destinations year-round, Classic Journeys can put together a personalized wedding trip for just the two of you, or a wedding party of any size.

Can I book a private trip for a honeymoon?

Yes! Turn any of our itineraries into the trip of a lifetime for two, or talk to us about your ideal honeymoon destinations, hotels and activities and we’ll customize the perfect honeymoon to celebrate your marriage. Maybe it’s a tour of Europe’s most romantic cities, an adventure though Southeast Asia, or something else entirely—tell us your travel bucket list and we’ll make sure your married life gets off to a spectacular start.

  • Best Sustainable: G Adventures
  • Best for True Solo Travel: Black Tomato
  • Best for Ages 25-39: For The Love of Travel

Best Experience : Exodus Travels

Courtesy of Exodus Travels

Traveling solo on an Exodus Travels group trip means access to self-guided and guided excursions around the world for every type of traveler. Choose a walking wine holiday in Portugal or explore Egypt via cruise boat and sleeper train, for example. Additionally, its Exodus Edits collection offers shorter itineraries of up to five days and is geared towards travelers in their 30s and 40s—though they’re ideal for anyone looking for more vigorous activity such as ziplining and surfing in Costa Rica or sampling street eats and beach hopping in Sicily.

There is no single supplement fee when you room with a fellow traveler, and chances are you may end up with your own room anyway. Booking a travel itinerary with UK-based Exodus Travels includes a full refund should the company need to cancel your trip and a complimentary trip transfer to another tour or different person up to 21 days before the scheduled trip. Plus, travelers who book their third or more trips with Exodus receive a 5 percent discount on their next booking.

What’s more, the company works to curate trips that align with a number of United Nations sustainable development goals including goals for responsible consumption and production, empowering local communities, and climate action considerations. Exodus Travels (founded in 1974) was awarded Best Operator in National Geographic Traveller’s sixth annual Reader Awards in 2021.

Best for Ages 35-50 : El Camino Travel

Courtesy of Encounter Travel

According to El Camino Travel ’s founder, Katalina Mayorga, elder millennials are their strongest customer base. That means if you were born between 1980 and 1985 approximately, you’ll find yourself among curious, like-minded solo travelers looking to immerse themselves in destinations like Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Eastern European nation of Georgia. Some trips even add a professional photographer to capture shareable shots so you can remain in the moment.

All of El Camino’s guided, small group trips max out at 12 participants. They’re also curated with an ethos of preserving and protecting local culture, the environment, and communities. For example, some of their partners include the Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville in Tobago and La Sierra Artist Residency in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Best Sustainable : G Adventures

Courtesy of Intrepid Travel

G Adventures is particularly known for its sustainable, responsible ethos. The company works with small, locally-owned hotels and operators to ensure your travel dollars benefit the community you’re visiting; outlines policies around child and animal welfare practices; aims to reduce single-use plastics, and works to ensure experiences taking place in Indigenous communities align with community goals.

Founded in 1990, G Adventures specializes in small group adventure tours to a host of destinations from Asia to South America and Africa to the Arctic. Nearly half of the travelers on every trip are flying solo, and there’s no single supplement if you choose to bunk with a same-sex roommate. Or, select your own room for a fee.

A Chief Experience Officer leads each group tour and itineraries are searchable by travel style. For example, find wellness-centric trips like nine days of daily yoga, visits to Hindu temples, and partake in traditional healing ceremonies in Bali. Or travel with their partner, National Geographic, for an exclusive guided tour of South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and a visit to Soweto township in Johannesburg, the home of Nelson Mandela.

G Adventures partnered with hostel booking service Hostelworld in 2021 to launch its Roamies itineraries. Its combination of backpacking and organized travel itineraries includes countries like Albania, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Vietnam. The trips are marketed to 18- to 35-year-olds, though like-minded individuals keen on budget travel and communal environments may enjoy these trips, too.

Best for True Solo Travel : Black Tomato

Courtesy of G Adventures

Black Tomato specializes in bespoke luxury travel experiences. For those interested in traversing around the world solo and willing to pay a premium for tailored itineraries, its adventurous or culturally immersive experiences may just be your ticket.

Your travels might look like hiking and biking in Patagonia, embarking on a spiritual pilgrimage through Bhutan and India, chasing glaciers and geysers in Iceland, or learning to cook Georgia and Armenia’s local dishes or Japan’s regional cuisine.

In 2017, Black Tomato launched its Get Lost adventure travel experience. With the support of a dedicated team, and without prior knowledge of where they're headed, Get Lost participants will find their way home from an undisclosed location. The location is selected based on a pre-travel questionnaire about which environment clients would like to immerse themselves in. Then, they show up at the airport and the adventure begins.

Best for Ages 25-39 : For The Love of Travel

Courtesy of Contiki

With 80 percent of individuals traveling with For The Love of Travel jet -setting solo, each trip is packed with opportunities to meet fellow Millennial and Gen Z travel enthusiasts. For example, within your small “crew” of up to 14 people, make new friends doing snow sports and unwinding in saunas in Lapland or devouring tacos and sipping mezcal in Mexico City. Trips range from four to nine days, including weekends in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain wilderness or an extended weekend in Costa Rica where you’ll hike through rainforests, relax in hammocks, and hike, bike, or surf.

According to company feedback, the average FTLOT traveler is 30 years old and interested in meeting new people while traveling . The company bills itself as a mid-range travel company, where “we might stay in a more basic hotel for a couple of nights so we can include a Michelin-worthy meal and a private catamaran ride.”

In 2022, FTLOT plans to offer at least 10 new itineraries including to Belize, Turkey, and Spain’s Basque Country. And for those with the flexibility, the company launched Sojrn in 2021 featuring month-long, themed stays in destinations like Cape Town—focused on biodiversity—and a fashion-oriented stay in Paris.

FTLOT requires an initial deposit and allows installment payments if not paid in full.

Best for 50+ : Overseas Adventure Travel Rates

Courtesy Flash Pack

Overseas Adventure Travel is primarily aimed at American travelers aged 50 and over. It offers guided itineraries to worldwide destinations, including Africa, Antarctica, Asia, and the South Pacific, with trips ranked by activity level and accompanied by a list of physical requirements to help select an itinerary that is best suited for you. For example, their Japan and South Korea itinerary advise that participants be able to carry their own luggage as the selected hotels do not have porter service.

Some of Overseas Adventure Travel’s most popular trips include 17 days of wending the Adriatic from Croatia to Bosnia and Herzegovina (think a walking tour in Dubrovnik, sampling traditional Bosnian food in Sarajevo, and exploring the countryside near Zagreb). On another popular trip, you spend 15 days traveling through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, ending in Helsinki, Finland. All trips offer pre-and post-itinerary extensions, and either waive the single supplement entirely or offer a discount on a private room.

The company offers a free Roommate Matching Program which helps you find a like-minded, same-sex roommate. If they can’t find a match, your single supplement is deducted. Small group sizes typically average 13 travelers.

Overseas Adventure Travel won the Solo Travel Award for Best Tour in 2017 and 2018, thanks in large part to its policy of offering a limited number of single spaces for each itinerary.

Best Female : Wild Women Expeditions

Courtesy of Overseas Adventure Travel

It began as an all-women, Canada-based canoe tripping company in 1991, and Wild Women Expeditions is perfect for boundary-pushing women who want to travel independently and enjoy the safety and support of an organized tour. The company also prioritizes hiring female tour leaders and on-the-ground guides. It offers outdoor adventures for women of all ages and identities and with a range of physical abilities (“whether your greatest skill is tracking a storm or talking up a storm, summiting mountains or summoning courage, keeping your kayak in line or coloring outside the lines,” as the company describes).

The company travels to 31 destinations around the world like Egypt, Tanzania, and the Azores islands. Itineraries are typically adventure-based and are filtered on their website by activity, with options ranging from sailing to cycling and horse riding. Imagine yourself sea kayaking and snorkeling in the Galapagos or scaling glaciers in Alaska.

Most guests are solo travelers and there’s no single supplement to worry about as accommodation is typically in a shared room or cabin. Though if privacy is a priority, you can usually snag your own room for a nominal extra fee. Group sizes are kept small and social with between six and 14 women, depending on the itinerary you choose. The average group size is eight.

Wild Women Expeditions also takes care to curate trips that avoid or minimize the disturbance of wildlife; supports environmental education and advocacy projects; and partners with social justice and women’s rights organizations.

Want to take a look at some other options? See our guide to the best women-only adventure travel companies .

Best for Solo Parent Travel : Intrepid Travel

Courtesy of Wild Women Expeditions

Intrepid ’s family-themed holidays welcome adults traveling with children, including solo parents looking to travel with their kids without the stress of planning and coordinating a trip. Since each family’s travel needs and preferences are different, every itinerary includes an “essential trip information” section where Intrepid outlines whether the trip would be a good fit for you and your kids, as well as a physical rating from least to more strenuous activities.

For example, an itinerary through part of the Amazon Jungle in Peru advises the jungle can be very hot and humid, and that the weather can be unpredictable in the Andes. On the other hand, an 11-day trip to Borneo island in Southeast Asia lists a minimum age of 5 and outlines a range of accommodations from hotels to guesthouses and jungle camps; on a few occasions, travel times between destinations range between four to five hours. Trips to Costa Rica, Tanzania, China, and Morocco are also listed.

Individuals under 17 years typically receive a 10 percent discount, and the company requires that adults have at least one child under 18 years traveling with them. As part of Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, itineraries support initiatives surrounding sustainability and conservation, climate education, and preservation of Indigenous culture.

How To Choose a Tour Company

How do you find just the right travel company — and itinerary — for that trip of a lifetime?

Tips To Find the Best Tour Company

The team at Clark Deals loves to search for the best travel deals and share them with you.

Here are some of our top tips to find the best tour company:

We like to start by searching   TourRadar.com and TravelStride.com . As soon as you enter the region you are interested in touring, you can get started. But you can customize further including by travel dates, budget and even your travel style. Then you can compare features and prices side-by-side. The results will suggest tour operator company names — including local companies and small mom-and-pop touring groups that might offer the greatest expertise.

Companies like Intrepid (a leader in sustainable and responsible travel) and G-Adventures tend to have a broader age range and an international clientele, while Contiki focuses on the 30 and under crowd.

Other top tour groups are:

  • Tripmasters
  • Road Scholar
  • Adventures by Disney
  • Thomson Family Adventures

Before you book, always verify that the tour company is an established and credible provider. To do that, start with a little sleuthing. We love the online review community Trustpilot ( Review ) as well as the Better Business Bureau ( Review ).

Also, ask your travel-loving friends about which travel companies they love — and which ones to avoid.

Tips To Find the Best Tour for Your Trip

Now that you have found a travel company that meets your needs, it is time to select your tour.

Interested in taking an African safari or nature trip? When it comes to wildlife and your safety, pay extra attention to reviews and don’t skimp on safety. Also consider the most inclusive tours that bundle the per-person price for all accommodations, meals, drinks, tours, transfers, etc.

But maybe an organized guided group tour isn’t your bag? There are ways to meet up with the best on-the-ground guides on an independent or self-guided trip at TourRadar.com and TravelStride.com.

Also, look at Viator.com and GetYourGuide.com . Both are online marketplaces that list all kinds of local tours from one-hour to full-day and multi-day excursions offered by various providers (private tours, too). And both are good places to check out for trip ideas and what not to miss during your visit.

Do your homework. Grab your travel mate and make a list of what your needs and wants are for your dream trip.

Travel Tour Discussion Checklist

  • What is the per-person budget?
  • Do you want to add a specific focus to the trip such as biking, walking, food, culture, history, sailing, or skiing?
  • What’s your activity level? Go nonstop all day or easy-to-short walking distances?
  • Consider an age group focus. Under 35? Older than 60?
  • What size group? 12-24 on a mini-coach or 40-60 on a mega-motorcoach? (Check my note on this below.)
  • What does the tour offer?
  • Is airfare included?
  • Are all transfers included? Airport to hotel and reverse?  And what about the transportation to a day tour meeting point?
  • Are any meals included?
  • Are there additional costs for optional activities such as theme dinners, side trips to a village, night tours?
  • Are your accommodations city center for easy independent sightseeing? Is the hotel quality 3-star? Or 5-star?
  • What is the balance of driving or traveling each day vs sightseeing and activities?
  • Do you get/want any free time for shopping, strolling or museum visits?
  • Is there a single supplement fee to travel solo?
  • Is my deposit nonrefundable if I must cancel or my travel mate can’t travel?
  • What are the general cancellation policies?

Special Note on Group Size : I’d like to make an important note about the size of your group. The larger groups increase the odds of traveling with a perpetually late traveler or a complainer. A big group may also limit where you might share a meal or spend the night. Mega-coaches often can’t fit into small villages — which could mean tourist restaurants and hotel chains. If you want a more local experience, it often helps to go with a smaller group.

Final Thought

A final word: To protect yourself, always pay with a credit card! And, strongly consider buying third-party travel insurance . Then, research coverage plans at InsureMyTrip.com . We have a step-by-step guide on InsureMyTrip here .

RUMOR: Disney Switching to Controversial Third-Party Disability Access Service

Rumors suggest that Disney will switch to a third-party company for their Disability Access Service (DAS) sometime soon.

Disney’s Disability Access Service

WDWNT’s source indicated the switch could be as soon as two weeks from now, but nothing has been announced or confirmed, and plans are always subject to change.

The service may be similar or even the same as the IBCCES (International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards) Attractions Assistance Pass that Universal switched to last year .

With IBCCES, guests must sign up before their visit and upload documentation such as a doctor’s note. Their information and documents will be reviewed. If IBCCES then pre-qualifies a guest for an accessibility card, Universal then contacts them about accommodations they may need.

Pre-qualifying does not guarantee an Attractions Assistance Pass. Universal has final approval and gives the guest a case number to take to guest services on their visit. Guests must show their digital accessibility card in the app (screenshots and printouts are not accepted) and Universal gives them their Attractions Assistance Pass. The pass is good for a year, but guests must pick up a new card every two weeks.

Disney’s current Disability Access Service at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort is good for 60 days. Guests can pre-register as soon as 30 days in advance of their visit but no less than 2 days before arrival with a live virtual chat. Or they can register in person during their trip at a guest relations location.

A Cast Member will ask about what accommodations the guest needs and determine if DAS is right for them. DAS allows guests to request a return time to an attraction and then enter the attraction through the Lightning Lane queue. Guests can get unlimited DAS return times in a day but may only hold one at a time.

‘I can’t tell you how I feel’: Retirees duped out of hundreds of dollars by 3rd-party travel company

PHOENIX ( KPHO /Gray News) - An Arizona couple says a travel company they didn’t know they were using has cost them hundreds of dollars.

Judy Overmeyer and her husband Michael are enjoying their retirement life in San Tan Valley.

However, the one activity they long for is spending time with their numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom live out of state.

So, they contacted Southwest Airlines and booked a trip to Salt Lake City to see family in June. The cost of the airfare was $719.

But something unexpected came up, and they had to reschedule their June flight to July.

The Overmeyers then went online, and after searching for Southwest Airlines’ phone number, they called to change their flight.

However, Judy Overmeyer said she was charged $851 on top of the $719 original fare for the change.

“I can’t tell you how I feel because I’m not allowed to say those words on air,” she said.

The $851 purchase wasn’t from Southwest Airlines but from a company called PCM Travels.

As it turns out, when Judy Overmeyer and her husband typed Southwest Airlines into a search engine looking for the reservation number, they mistakenly landed on PCM Travels.

An online consumer advocate called PCM Travels to show how easily people can get fooled. During the conversation, the advocate asked if he was calling Southwest Airlines. The representative replied that he called Southwest Airlines’ consolidated desk.

Judy Overmeyer said she didn’t realize she was dealing with PCM Travels until this report from Arizona’s Family.

Arizona’s Family also contacted PCM Travels. The company shared that it is a legitimate third-party travel company that offers convenience for travelers who don’t want to wait on hold for airline carriers.

After explaining the situation, PCM Travels refunded $500 to the Overmeyers but not the entire $851.

Representatives with the company said they didn’t see anything incorrect with the booking and were under no legal obligation to make a refund but did so because of Michael Overmeyer’s military service.

The Overmeyers said they’ll be more careful when searching for phone numbers online and are grateful to get some of their money returned from the ordeal.
