Looking for the best dorm room inspiration? This post is all about the trendiest dorm room 2022 ideas.

dorm room 2021 ideas

Let's be honest, I was more excited about decorating my dorm room than doing anything else in college. Decorating dorm rooms is so much fun, but the trends are constantly changing so you never know what to buy. Lucky for you, I have found some of the trendiest dorm rooms that you need to copy in 2022. These rooms are the cutest and there are ideas for every style and aesthetic!

These dorm room 2022 ideas are definitely Pinterest worthy and will make you SO excited to go off to college and decorate (because that's the best part, right?!). Having a dorm room that you love will make your college life so much better because the space that you do everything in will be cute, homey, and happy.

This post is all about dorm room 2022 ideas.

BEST DORM ROOM 2022 IDEAS:

1. create canvas collages for wall decor .

dormify

Recreate this bright, girly dorm room:

Comfort Spaces Cotton Comforter Set Jacquard Pom-Pom Tufts Design, Down Alternative, All Season Modern Bedding, Matching Shams, Full/Queen, Phillips, Ivory

Have you ever seen better decor for a dorm room? Everyone is obsessed with the photo collages, but this takes it to the next level.

You could DIY these canvas collages so easily and they would look amazing. You could make them any aesthetic you want (but I am loving this hot pink and white moment).

2. Use these pastel crates to stay organized & trendy

Recreate this neat, trendy little space:

Hay Colour Crate S Transport Box, 26,5cm, Light Yellow

Probably the most trendy organization item of all time: the HAY crates. All the influencers in their danish style apartments know that these pastel crates are a must.

They would be SO perfect in a dorm room for keeping all of you toiletry items together, or storing stuff in a shelf like this pic.

3. Use floating shelves for display & organization

Amazon

I used to wish there were floating shelves that would work in a dorm room, and I always assumed there was nothing out there that could actually hold stuff up.

THEN I found these photo ledges made by the command hook brand (so you know they're good) and I'm obsessed. You could put little photos and decor up there, or even school supplies as pictured.

4. Use vines & functional items as wall decor

dorm room ideas girl 2021

Recreate this cozy, boho dorm room:

JPSOR 24pcs Fake Leaves Artificial Ivy Garland Greenery Vines for Bedroom Decor Aesthetic Silk Ivy Vines for Room Wall Home Decoration

Guys - this dorm room is everything . I absolutely love the way she used functional items like her ukulele and hat as wall decor, and I am obsessed with the desk chair.

Don't forget that you will be spending a LOT of time at that desk, so you want a comfy chair that you can work at, get ready at, eat at, etc.

5. Create a fancy desk space

Recreate this incredibly put-together dorm room:

Tempaper Pepper Scout Removable Peel and Stick Wallpaper, 20.5 in X 16.5 ft, Made in the USA

The fancy mirror and lamp make this dorm room seem like a nice hotel, not some random building on a college campus.

6. Use plants to add some life into the space

dorm room tour 2022

You know me, I am usually the ultimate fake plant advocate, but something about having a real plant in a dorm room is so nice.

This snake plant thrives on neglect and can go without being watered for a long time. I think live plants are so good for dorm rooms because they give you something to take care of and have responsibility.

7. Use peel & stick wallpaper

dorm room accessories 2021

Recreate this dreamy dorm room:

Okydoky Brick Wallpaper, Peel and Stick Wallpaper with Antique Printed, 17.7" x 394", Self-Adhesive Wallpaper, Easy to Install for Room Kitchen Wall Cabinet Shelf Drawer, NO.103-1

You know we're all big fans of the classic dalmatian peel and stick wallpaper, but this brick look is SO good.

If you want a less busy look and something with a little more character, this brick wallpaper is so good.

8. Frame your posters for a more finished look

Recreate this cozy, black and white dorm room:

Egofine 18x24 Frames Set of 2 Matted for 16x20 White Poster Frame Made of Solid Wood - Acrylic Plexiglass Front for Wall Mounting Hanging Picture Frame Vertically or Horizontally

Posters are a given for dorm rooms, but framing them can take them from a flimsy poster taped to the wall to looking like actual art.

I love these black and white prints that you could frame with the amazon frames and tape up with some 3M tape.

9. Get a step stool that's cute AND functional

LUE BONA Velvet Vanity Stool Chair for Makeup Room, Beige Vanity Stool with Gold Legs,18” Height, Small Storage Ottoman Foot Ottoman Rest for Living Room, Bathroom

I have never seen such a cute storage ottoman. They're always those super basic boxy ones that aren't that cute, but THIS ONE is sooo cute.

10. Go with all white and pops of color

dorm must haves

sourced from: @samashley32

Recreate this bright, minimalistic dorm room:

dorm room tour 2022

This is one of our all time favorite dorm rooms at BSL. The all white aesthetic is SO good and the wall decor is just right.

11. Use string lights to fill up empty wall space

Recreate this lovely, leopard dorm room:

dorm room tour 2022

For some reason I can't get over this dorm room. It is so simple but it looks so cozy and put together.

You can't go wrong with white and leopard and the string lights are the perfect way to fill up empty wall space while also adding some nice ambiance!

12. Get a pretty tray for your beauty products

CHICHIC Gold Mirror Tray Jewelry Organizer Vanity Tray Jewelry Tray Perfume Tray Dresser Decorative Tray, Glass Metal Makeup Tray for Bathroom Bedroom Cosmetics Storage, 11.8 x 7.9 Inch

Having a little tray to display your perfume, jewelry, and cute skincare products is functional AND pleasing to the eye!!

These mirrored trays are soo trendy right now and I love this Amazon find. It looks way more expensive than it actually is!

13. Use a macrame wall hanging to display photos

dorm-decor-ideas-wall

Recreate this cute photo display:

dorm room tour 2022

These macrame wall hangings are everywhere, but I love the idea of using it to hang pictures. Just grab some clothespins and you're good.

This is a great option for a macrame hanging, but always keep an eye out at HomeGoods for some really unique ones!!

14. Create a girl power photo collage

Recreate this bright, fun photo collage:

AceList Led Neon Sign for Wall Decor, Lightning & Cloud Neon Lights Signs, USB or Battery Powered Led Signs for Bedroom Wall, Kids Room, Living Room, Bar, Party, Christmas, Wedding Decor

This photo collage is SO cute, especially for a dorm room. I love the girl power message (that's what we're all about) and the neon sign could not be more trendy!

dorm room tour 2022

15. Get a necklace holder to keep your jewelry organized

Umbra Trigem Hanging Jewelry Organizer Tiered Tabletop Countertop Free Standing Necklace Holder Display, 3, Brass/White

Keeping your jewelry organized in college can be such a pain, but this super cute and simple necklace holder can keep everything from getting tangled.

You know I love gold and white, so this is a good one 😉

16. Add a fun, printed comforter

dorm-room-design-before-and-after

Recreate this cute, preppy dorm room:

Lips Wall Art Dorm Posters - by Haus and Hues, Lip Art, Red Dorm Decor, Cute Pink Aesthetic Poster, Red Lips Wall Decor, Trendy Lips Dorm Room Posters for Girls, College Wall Art UNFRAMED 12x16

If you can get your hands on a custom neon sign with your name, DO IT. I loveee the neon sign look for dorm rooms, and having a custom one is even more special.

The mixed patterns make a super cute overall look and I love the way this room is put together!

17. Keep it sweet and simple

Recreate this classic, cute dorm room:

Bouqlife Macrame Plant Hangers with Pots and Saucers, 3 Pack Hanging Planters for Indoor Plants Hanging Plant Holders with Hooks 34" / 26" / 20"

With a couple fun things on the walls and mixing a bunch of textures n your bed, you can make a perfectly cozy little space.

18. Get a cute bedside lamp

dorm room tour 2022

I got a super small lamp like this and it was perfect.

19. Stick with black and white for a chic look

room inspo

Recreate this cozy, chic dorm room:

Kevin Textile Set of 2 Faux Fur Pillow Cover Decorative New Luxury Series Merino Style Christmas Off-White Fluffy Throw Pillow Case Fuzzy Cushion Cover Pillow Covers for Bed (18" x 18" 45cm ...

This room looks like the BEST place to crash after a long day. It looks so warm and cozy.

20. Use warm, fun colors and patterns

Recreate this beautiful, boho bed space:

CY2SIDE 50PCS Peach Beach Aesthetic Picture for Wall Collage, 50 Set 4x6 inch, Boho Style Collage Print Kit, Teal Color Room Decor for Girls, Wall Art Print for Room, Dorm Photo Display, VSCO posters

I love how coordinated this dorm room is. The bedding, pillows, and photo collage all match and I am here for it!

Photo collages are so nice because they're super easy, can be personalized, and fill up all that empty wall space!!

21. Get a wall calendar to remember big due dates

U Brands Magnetic Monthly Calendar Dry Erase Board, 16 x 20 Inches, Gold Aluminum Frame - 364U00-01

I seriously can't live without a wall calendar. It's so nice to constantly be able to look up and see your whole month planned out.

In college, having a wall calendar kept me on top of everything and I never forgot big due dates or test dates (well.. maybeee not never).

22. Use a blush and white theme

best dorm rooms

Recreate this classy, girly dorm room:

dorm room tour 2022

Having a theme with specific colors chosen makes decorating a dorm room SO much easier. I am a neutral girl at heart but adding a light pink is such a fun way to add some color into a dorm room.

23. Hang up posters of your favorite artist

Recreate this trendy, cozy nook:

Pantaknot Dalmatian Spots Decorative Throw Pillow Covers Set of 2 Cheetah Pillowcase Cushion Home Décor, 18 x 18 Inch

If you're an A$AP Rocky fan, this is the dorm room for you. Honestly though, you could achieve this look with any black and white poster and it would be SO cute.

The dalmation pillows are so cute and a nice change from the dalmation peel & stick wallpaper that we always see!

24. Get a pretty desk mirror

dorm room tour 2022

A desk mirror is so nice to have whether you have your own private bathroom or not.

There are some mirrors that are probably better for getting ready (the ones with the lights and zoomed in mirror) but this one is just so cute and dainty for decor.

25. Fill up wall space with a photo collage

cute dorm room ideas

Recreate this bright, fun dorm room:

dorm room tour 2022

Photo collages are the perfect way to fill up those big, empty walls! I love how the photos are square and perfectly distributed across this wall. It looks like they are mostly personal photos, which is so fun because you get to constantly look at all of your fun memories.

Once again, the neon signs are a hit! They are so cute and really add something to a room that you can't achieve with a poster or cork board.

26. Always hang up your personal photos

Recreate this perfect, patterned dorm room:

dorm room tour 2022

Personal photos are the best way to decorate because you always have your friends and family with you, no matter how far away you are.

This dorm room is so cute. Mixing patterns can be hard, but this was definitely a successful design!

27. You NEED a letter board

dorm room tour 2022

What's a college dorm room without a letter board? It's pretty much a dorm room staple at this point. You can leave notes for your roomies or put an inspirational quote up to keep you going!

Dorm Room Essentials: Your Complete Guide to a Designer College Space on a Budget

Heading off to college? Pack these dorm room essentials with our easy-to-follow checklist for bedding, decor, storage, kitchen and more.

dorm room tour 2022

Related To:

Ah, to go back to college. Of course, we'd love to go back to spending afternoons reading on the college green (once a nerd, always a nerd), but if we knew what we knew now, we would have the most adorable dorm room EVER. The good news? You can have that, even on a budget. Here's what you need to stock your dorm room, designer-style, and some nice-to-haves, from the bedding to the floors to the "kitchen." (Yes, that microwave/fridge counts as your first kitchen.)

DORM BEDDING ESSENTIALS

You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a personalized bed setup that's chic and comfy. What you do need to do: Find out what size bed your dorm room will have. Most have either twin or twin XL, but double-check before you buy.

Dorm Bed and Bulletin Board Wall

Dorm Room Takeover Bed With Cat Comforter, Hexagonal Patchwork Bulletin Board and Patterned Throw Pillows

Hexagon pieces create a colorful and fun personalized bulletin board to display photos and jewelry over this dorm room bed. The coral tones compliment the coral in the turquoise cat patterned comforter. Colorful, patterned throw pillows finish the fun, multicolor design.

The Must-Haves

Comforter : For bargain shoppers, check the sale section of your favorite department store for discounted comforters; even if the design isn't your style, you can dress it up with a stylish duvet. Splurge on a down or down-alternative version for an ultra-plush bed.

Sheet Set : Jersey sheets are a great choice for dorm room bedding: They don't wrinkle when they come out of the dryer, and they're as soft as your favorite T-shirt.

Pillows : Add two basic pillows for sleeping by night and lounging by day.

Throw Blanket : Perfect for chilly nights and curling up for marathon study sessions. Bonus points if you find one that complements your dorm bedding.

The Nice-to-Haves

Duvet Cover : Using a duvet cover versus a traditional bed-in-a-bag allows you to easily and affordably change up your bed when the mood strikes. Your bed will be front and center, so why not cover it with a design you love?

Throw Pillows : They'll add style to your bed and double as on-the-floor seating. Mix and match big and small patterns and textures for a designer look.

Extra Sheets & Pillowcases : When laundry day is postponed indefinitely, clean sheets are still within your reach. Opt for one solid set and one set with a subtle pattern.

DORM KITCHEN ESSENTIALS

You may find comfort in your college dining halls, but there are times when in-room meal prep is a must. Luckily, most dorm rooms come stocked with a mini-refrigerator/freezer/microwave unit. Many college dorms restrict or prohibit the use of small kitchen appliances with hot plates or heating elements, so be sure to check your school's rules and see what's included before you stock up.

Dorm Room Mini Refrigerator and Food Storage

Dorm Room Takeover

Mini refrigerators are useful, but they aren't all that attractive. Personalize your dorm room refrigerator using strips of washi tape. We created an abstract stripe design with metallic gold tape. Chalkboard adhesive over the freezer allows you to further personalize the appliance. A light turquoise stacked shelf creates a cute and useful pantry for food and kitchen accessory storage.

Plates : Make sure to choose microwave-safe versions — your late-night reheated pizza will thank you!

Bowls : Choose an assortment of patterns and sizes for snacks to soups to cereals.

Drinking Glasses : Choose glassware made from melamine for a stylish, non-breakable option.

Coffee Mugs : College and coffee are the perfect pair, but mugs can be used for so much more, like heating up soup, whipping up mug cakes or housing tea.

Coffeemaker : Choose a version without a hot plate, like a French press or pod-based system, for coffee on demand.

Cutting Board & Paring Knife : Feed your fruit and veggie habit with this basic cutting setup.

Utensils : Hit the dollar store for an inexpensive set of forks, knives and spoons. Buy four settings to accommodate a small group and account for inevitable lost utensils throughout the year.

Can Opener : Break open college convenience store foods with ease with a sturdy, dollar-store can opener.

Cleaning Supplies : Yes, you have to do the dishes (eventually). Stock your room with dish soap, sponges and kitchen towels packed in a small basket to make washing dishes in the communal sink that much simpler.

On-the-Go Beverage Containers: To stay hydrated on the go, stock the room with these three essential travel cups: one for hot drinks, one for cold drinks, and one for water.

Large Bowl: Game night won't be the same without a big, communal bowl of chips, pretzels or popcorn. Choose one in durable metal or melamine to minimize breakage risk.

Storage Jars: Clear glass or plastic storage containers help keep cereal and other essentials fresh. Another bonus? They take up less space than boxes do, and add dorm room style to boot. Dress them up with stick-on paper or chalkboard labels.

Spill-Proof Containers: Save leftover ramen noodles or takeout in easy-to-transport, spill-proof containers that are small enough to leave room for other essentials in your mini fridge.

Bag Clips: No one likes stale cookies and crackers! Keep snacks fresh with bag clips in a variety of sizes.

Stock Your Dorm Kitchen With These 20 Essentials 21 Photos

You may find comfort in your college dining halls, but we've got 20 kitchen essentials for times when in-room meal prep is a must.

DORM DESK ESSENTIALS

Your desk can be an inviting spot where you do some of your best work ... or a blank, boring space you never use. It's all in how you outfit your space. These are the basics (and the extras) you'll need.

Contemporary Colorful Dorm Desk

Dorm Room Takeover Desk Decoration With Salmon Throw Blanket, Wall Paper Desk Top and Colorful School Supplies

Gold and white floral removable wallpaper breathes instant life into this standard dorm room desk. The chair is dressed up with a plush throw blanket and multicolored accent pillow. Cute notebooks and school supplies add color and pattern making them useful and decorative.

Task Lighting: An inexpensive lamp will literally brighten up your desk for late-night study sessions. Choose one that's not too bright to keep your roommate happy.

Power Strip + Extension Cord : Outlets can be at a premium in a dorm space, so this is crucial for computer chargers, speakers and lighting. Get one with a built-in surge protector to protect those term papers. Stretch it behind your bed once and have a spot to plug in phones and tablets on top of your desk.

Pencil Cup : You'll need a place to hold pencils, pens and highlighters. While you're at it, add all those things to the list. Or, use a mug from your kitchen cart.

Calendar: Yeah, you have your phone, but a wall calendar is essential. Bonus points if it's a dry-erase version where you can easily update your commitments and due dates.

Basic Office Supplies : You'll need scissors, a stapler, a hole punch and paper clips.

Desk Cup Holder With Hanging Storage Bag

Custom Patterned Decal: Cover the (likely worn) desk surface with a custom pattern, like removable wallpaper or contact paper. Make sure to choose one that won't leave a residue when you move out.

Sticky Notes: Perfect for roommate notes, marking your place in textbooks and laptop reminders.

Custom Chair: If your school's policy allows, swap out the basic chair with a rolling variety.

Cute Notebooks : Apart from being useful, they double as desk decor.

Letter Tray: Keep folders and papers organized with a desktop letter tray.

Bulletin Board: Hang photos and reminders of home. If yours has one already (score!) dress it up with cute thumbtacks. Or, create your own cork wall with cork tiles and removable adhesive strips like we did here.

Dorm decor essentials.

This is where your style really starts to shine. All it takes is a few essential pieces.

Wallpapered Dorm Room Dresser

Light Turquoise Wallpaper Strips Over Dresser Drawers in Dorm Room Takeover With Colorful Patterned Artwork

Don't limit wallpaper to horizontal surfaces. We took it vertical by cutting wallpaper pieces to size and adding it to each dorm dresser drawer. Light turquoise elements in the art pieces compliment the drawer wallpaper to tie it into the room. The dots on the paper design give an illuminating effect perfect for the happy, airy feel of the design.

Rug: A bare concrete floor is cold underfoot, especially late at night. Add a carpet remnant or inexpensive sisal rug to keep your toes toasty. You can even use your yoga mat as a rug when you're not stretching out in downward dog! Choose a floor covering that's a dark color to camouflage those (inevitably) infrequent cleanings.

Wall art: From large posters to brightly-colored bulletin boards, you'll need to fill those blank walls. Tape up posters with washi tape for a personal touch.

Or, create your own gallery wall — this one costs less than $50 to create!

Curtains: The standard-issue blinds provide privacy; adding your own window treatments adds personality and softness. Even a simple scarf can add a personal touch.

Plants: Even if you think you have a black thumb, at least one plant will brighten up your space and reintroduce oxygen into the room. Try a cactus or succulent for easy care.

Washi Tape : Use this colorful, removable tape to brighten everything from your dorm fridge to your room's door.

DORM STORAGE ESSENTIALS

Dorm rooms are notoriously tiny, which means you'll need some smart and creative storage solutions to keep clutter at bay.

Layered Rugs Under Dorm Coffee Table

Layered Textured Rugs Under Dorm Room Table With White Tabletop and Gold and Turquoise Breakfast Tray

Dress cold, bare dorm room floors with indoor-outdoor rugs that are inexpensive and hold up to a lot of traffic and spills. Here, we layered a black polypropylene rug on top of a larger sisal rug to add style and texture to the space. The black rug allows the white table top to pop, while the additional rugs compliment the light gold and turquoise tones of the breakfast tray.

Hamper: You'll need somewhere to store your (huge pile of) dirty laundry until you can go to the laundromat. And by laundromat, we mean your parents' laundry room.

Storage Baskets: Baskets keep things categorized and out of sight. Store them on top of your wardrobe to save precious floor and tabletop space.

Under-Bed Storage: Whether you have a lofted bed with a ton of space for larger storage bins or a bunk bed with just a little space, make it count! Airtight bins keep those items you aren't using every day, like extra blankets, sweaters and more, out of sight.

Inside-the-Door Organizer: Expand your wardrobe's footprint with a door organizer for shoes, scarves and accessories. Easily make more inspired choices and save space? That's a win-win.

Rolling Cart: Your under-bed storage can double as a coffee table — see how to make your own with this simple, budget-friendly DIY .

DORM DRESSER + VANITY ESSENTIALS

Creating a pretty spot to prep for the day will improve your mood, even if you were up half the night studying. Trust me on this.

Contemporary Dorm Room Nightstand

Dorm Room Takeover Colorful Nightstand Decor With Patterned Adhesive Top and Stainless Steel Lamp Under Hexagon Cork Board

Save money on dorm room decorating by bringing items from home and restyling them in a fresh, new way. Vivid colors create a bright and bold display perfect for showcasing personal style. The hexagonal corkboard wall doubles as wall-mounted storage for favorite necklaces and bracelets.

Lamp: A pretty lamp is both practical and decorative atop your dresser — it will light your way if you (bummer!) have early-morning classes and brighten up your room at night.

Jewelry Storage: No one likes tangled necklaces! Hang yours using thumbtacks and a bulletin board or another hanging jewelry option.

Bins & Boxes: Dollar-bin bowls (or vintage tins) will keep hair accessories, bracelets, rings and more organized and out of sight.

Mirror: You'll need a spot to check your hair before you head out (even if you haven't had time to brush it).

Decorative Tray : A tray to house those vanity essentials makes everything look a little bit nicer.

Encouraging Mantra Art: Hey, you're amazing! Help yourself remember by placing a positive saying where you'll see it before heading out to conquer the day. College? You totally got this.

Housing & residential programs offers new virtual tours.

Millersville University’s Department of Housing & Residential Programs (HARP) is proud to offer a new virtual tour option of all of our campus residence halls.  HARP partnered with Vivid Media in order to develop an immersive, virtual tour experience for current and prospective students to view what the residence hall room options look like on our campus.

dorm room tour 2022

Through this new platform, Millersville students and their families can explore the residence hall rooms in more detail to see the various amenities and conveniences that are offered to them prior to arriving on campus. Chris Jachimowicz, Director of New Student Programs notes, “Unfortunately the current health crisis means that we are unable to share MU’s fantastic residence halls with visitors in person. The new virtual tours, combined with our “walk through” display in the Lombardo Welcome Center, will ensure that prospective students and their families will get a good feel for what living in our halls will be like.”

The virtual tours feature each building with the option to explore each room type as well as the common areas, including study lounges, recreation rooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. In each specific building tour, visitors can click into a menu in the upper left-hand corner of the viewer to choose what type of area they would like to explore. Each room type and area is specifically listed. Additionally, there are four different viewing options to use, including the following: Explore 3D Space, Dollhouse View, Floorplan View, and Measurements. These options can be toggled by clicking on the corresponding icons on the bottom left-hand corner of the viewer. Hovering over each icon with the mouse arrow will indicate what each icon represents. The menu options will change dependent upon the current view that is showing.

Explore 3D Space

dorm room tour 2022

In this view, you can literally explore the area by clicking and progressing throughout the room as if you are actually there. Also, if you left-click and hold on the mouse, you can spin the view in all directions. The faint circles on the floor indicate the vantage point from that particular spot.

Dollhouse View

The Dollhouse View permits you to view the areas as if it were an dollhouse model. Again, if you left-click and hold on the mouse, you can spin the view in all directions. This is beneficial because it gives you a sense of the spaciousness of the room.

dorm room tour 2022

Floorplan View

The floorplan view gives you a simplistic overhead shot of the room that is being explored. This view can be used in conjunction with the Measurements option to manually click on any two areas to take a measurement. While we have various important measurements already listed for each residence hall, this is another option that can be used. Those measurements are listed under each residence hall ‘s corresponding “Room, Bed, and Window Dimensions” section.
