Review: Rick Astley at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena as star says 'I'll never forget it'

'I'm feeling pretty good, Nottingham', Rick Astley told the sell-out at crowd

'Is anyone dancing? Oh, for god's sake, Nottingham, IS ANYONE DANCING?' he quipped, with a broad smile and dry Lancastrian accent...

Every mention of Nottingham, of which there were many, triggered the sold-out crowd at the city's Motorpoint Arena to literally go wild for this 80s icon - who's enjoying the most spectacular revival. Rick Astley was catapulted back to 'uber cool' status after his superb performances at Glastonbury last year a gig which, by his own admission, he wouldn't have got had it not been for the Rickrolling internet prank (more on that later) and rocking New Year's Eve party, on BBC1.

Amiable and witty 'I'm a f****** big deal, I know', he says, struggling to keep a straight face after asking the crowd if they saw either of these events last year.Kicking off the opening night of his 'Are We There Yet?' tour, with a track from his latest album of the same title, he provoked high pitch screams from the outset. 'What, what' he teased, to a group of middle-aged women going crazy at the front, 'I've not done anything yet', he retorted.

It was a mix of old and new, with a few covers mixed in, that made up the setlist. 'I kinda like playing other people's songs', he told us, 'And there isn't a better song than this', as the band burst into As It Was, by Harry Styles, the crowd erupted. He sang it brilliantly.

Cry For help saw the whole arena lit up with phone torches, swaying in time. It was breathtaking to see. 'I sing all the time', he told us, 'But hearing these two showcase their voices in this song shows just what incredible singers they are', standing with his two backing vocalists. Rick left the stage momentarily, for a quick costume change, whilst we were left speechless by their stunning performance.

Rick Astley performs at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena

Dressed in a sumptuous plum suit, and with his freshly cut hair looking great (after posting earlier in the day on social media about how he desperately needed it cutting), it was hard to believe he's actually 58. Not only can he sing though, and impressively well, he is a highly skilled musician.

It was astonishing to see him transfer from guitar to drums with such ease for Highway To Hell. The crowd loving the way ALL the other band swopped instruments too. What a talented bunch.

Rick's self-depreciating humour had us captivated to hear what he was going to say as much as what he was going to sing.

Joking about 'punching above his weight' with his wife, having no female attention at school until he joined a band and how 'fame, money and fantastic suits' changed everything for him, he was very entertaining.

The 90 minutes flew by and it was time for the song we'd all been waiting for. Never Gonna Give You Up, topped the chart in 25 countries, back in 1987. The video to this hit has been viewed on YouTube over 1.4 billion times, to date, thanks to the Rickrolling prank; This saw internet users duped in to clicking on a link, which took them to the video.

Undoubtedly assisting in his huge resurgence, he also now has an Emote skin in the computer game, Fortnite one of the most popular games in the world right now. 'I'm feeling pretty good, Nottingham', he told us as the mass sing a long with every single one of the 10,000 fans up on their feet. 'I've had an amazing night, I'll never forget it!'

He didn't need to ask that initial question again, Nottingham WAS dancing and WE were all feeling pretty good, too.

Rick Astley was born 6 February 1966 in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England, UK. He came to prominence as a pop musician in the mid to late 80s and swept the nation with his indelible hit “Never Gonna Give You Up”.

Astley has been recognized as a key figure within the blue-eyed soul movement, which is a genre in which white artists perform rhythm and blues music. Apart from Astley this style has largely been popularized by contemporaries such as Wham! and Hall & Oates. Astley’s musical influence and style has ranged from early 60s classic pop, electronic dance, and towards the end of his career, soul. Though Astley’s sound was progressive and evolutionary his early 80s material was highly influenced by pop mega stars such as Madonna, Spandau Ballet, and Duran Duran.

Not unlike many pop artists Astley started his music journey singing in the local church choir at the age of 10. When Astley was in his early to mid teens he formed several bands and also played drums in a few local acts. He left school when he was 16 and gigged with bands like the cover group Give Way who primarily played songs by the Beatles and the Shadows. Astley also played in the locally acclaimed act FBI.

FBI focused mainly on soul music and wrote their own songs. The group made a name for themselves around town and ended up winning several local competitions. However the lineup experienced a dramatic shift when lead singer David Morris left. The band then recruited Astley as lead singer, which proved to be a significant turning point in Astley’s career. He was almost immediately recognized for his talent amongst record executives and was picked up as a solo artist for RCA records.

Before emerging completely as a solo artist Astley recorded his first single “When You Gonna” with Lisa Carter. Though this release did not chart his follow up single “Never Gonna Give You Up” took the pop world by storm. It remained on top of the British charts for five weeks and was 1987’s highest selling single. The song was not only an immense success in the UK, it went on to top the charts in 24 other countries. This track has remained relevant and experienced a resurgence of success, thanks due to the internet sensation “Rickrolling”.

Though Astley would never match the success he brought in with “Never Gonna Give You Up” (which is a near impossible standard to live up to) he continued to put out singles and albums to great commercial acceptance. His single “Whenever You Need Someone” was another hit. Though it did not chart in the states (due to the fact it was not released to a North American audience) it was a massive smash in Europe, going on to top the charts in 7 countries. Astley’s second full length album “Whenever You Need Somebody was a large scale success as well selling over 15.2 million copies worldwide and going No. 1 on the charts in both the UK and Australia.

For Astley’s next two albums he decided to abandon his pop star image and sound and strive for a more soul oriented and adult contemporary sound. Even in spite of his stylistic chance Astley still remained popular. His third album “Free” made it to No. 9 on the UK charts and to No. 31 on the US charts. Astley would go on to break the record for being the first male solo artist to have 8 singles chart within the UK top 10. The ballad “Cry For Help” was the song that broke the record. Before Astley announced his hiatus from music he released “Body & Soul” on 28 September 1993. It would be eight years later until Astley put out his fifth album “Keep It Turned On”. Within that time span Astley focused on his family, specifically raising his daughter. One significant contribution Astley made during his break was acting as a back up singer for the movie “The Lion King”.

In 2005 Astley released his 6th album “Portrait”, which consisted entirely of covers of classic standards. Apart from releasing new material Rick Astley jumped back into the music business touring alongside other huge 80s acts like Boy George.

Live reviews

There are few tracks as recognisable from the great era of the 80s as 'Never Gonna Give You Up' by Rick Astley. What many do not realise is that Rick went on to have further hit singles in his homeland of the UK and has now sold over 40 million records worldwide. It is no surprise either that Rick continues to tour globally to his appreciative fanbase who continue to turn out in force.

His setlist comprises almost exclusively of hits, giving the frontman a huge boost of confidence as the crowds scream in approval to the introduction of 'Together Forever'. The live band sound note perfect this evening, regenerating the tracks to an extent and making them sound fresh as ever. Rick has a fantastic way of interacting with the crowd as whole, he appears charming and witty all at once and this simply makes the fans even more engaged with the show. He proves he still understands the progression of pop with a reimagined cover of Daft Punk's own mega-hit 'Get Lucky' which leads him nicely into his own 'Never Gonna Give You Up' which is sang back at deafening levels.

Everyone has been "Rick Rolled" once in their life. It involves sending a person a hyperlink to something interesting but in reality it sends the person to the music video for Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give you Up" as a big joke.

This was a one hit wonder in the 1980s and it remains popular today. I have loved the song and his work since he broke onto the scene 30 years ago.

I won tickets to see him perform at the local venue as part of the radio's concert series. I had to be the fifth caller and I always try to get in and never was successful before. Somehow that day the stars aligned and I got right in and was the right caller! I was pumped and could hardly talk to the DJ.

The day came and I was first in line so that I could get right up front for the show. I ended up back stage at the end of the show with my favorite DJ who invited me to meet Rick and shake his hand. He was so humble and happy to talk with me for almost a half hour.

What can I say about Rick Astley? As someone in the audience shouted out last night at his concert

“Astley, you’re quality”! I couldn’t have put it better myself. The show itself was incredible. He sang some old classics & some of his fabulous new songs off his recent album too along with a mashup of George Ezra and Paul Simon which was amazing. A fabulous evening with some good surprises too (the gong especially!). I also enjoyed the witty banter in between songs immensely also. He seems a genuine, witty guy with an incredibly talented team of band members and singers. Fabulous - will definitely be going again, no doubt. If you get the chance to go, do it!!!

Me and my wife went on his last night and it was fantastic I must admit I was not too bothered to go at first but my wife insisted but I'm glad I did his performance was flawless and he mixed it up with a bit of old school and some of his new soul stuff great show I hope he comes to Birmingham again next year because me and my wife will certainly be getting tickets to see him' to any Rick astley lovers out there it's defiantly worth going to see him.

Rick Astley was absolutely amazing!!!! He still has a wonderful voice and it sounds as if he hasn't aged since his first videos were made. Before I went, I wasn't sure how the concert would play out, and it turned out better than I had expected!!!!! It was a wonderful night and Rick Astley stole the show with his fantabulous singing, wonderful sense of humor, and great hair!

Saw Rick last night at Colston Hall Bristol.

Brilliant concert . He is an amazing entertainer , everyone on stage seemed to be enjoying themselves the interaction with the audience was good. Check out Ricks version of Highway to Hell , not to be missed.

Thank you Rick Astley for a great night.

menopausalmadwoman’s profile image

A slightly disappointing evening with Astley acting like an entertainer instead of the serious wonderful singer he is. The crowd waiting for the 80s hits did not help either.

But when the great songs from 50 were lperformed the band and the great backing vocals made ut worthwhile.

ton_bastein’s profile image

Its hard to tell how much of his crowd pleasing patter is made up on spec and how much is on the spot, but above all else, he entertains.

Many of his classics given a new lease of life, and ably supported by more new material than I expected. highly entertaining evening.

stephen-cooke’s profile image

What a concert. Fully lived up to my expectations "I heard him in Esbjerg, Manchester and last year in Kbh - I am so fond of his lovely way to be on.

And what an end ,, we just couldn’t get enough. We'll be back Rich Astley - maybe a Friday or Saturday next time?

unni-riel’s profile image

Wow!! Great show, he is an amazing entertainer! And all the songs was awesome ! A consistent artist all over almost 30 years. As huge fans, me and my son had a very good time and enjoyed a lot. Good venue also, centrally located and all the equipments works fine.

Rick Astley Brings ‘Are We There Yet?’ Tour to Nottingham!

Rick Astley on Stage

Tickets on sale Friday 23 June at 9:30am: https://www.motorpointarenanottingham.com/Online/article/artist-rick-astley

It’s been 36 years since he first shot to fame, yet Rick Astley is now arguably a more prominent force in popular culture than he ever was. The endearingly boyish 57-year-old is still winning over new fans, whether he’s performing with Foo Fighters , Take That or Blossoms ; becoming an unlikely social media sensation; or simply embracing the unending love that greets his era-defining smash ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ which was boosted by its use in an intensely affecting scene in ‘Ted Lasso’ . Indeed, since returning to #1 in 2016 with ‘50’ , Rick has enjoyed the strongest run of album chart positions of his entire career.

It’s been the journey of a lifetime, yet the road ahead of him remains open for further exploration – the next stop being the release of his long awaited ninth studio album ‘Are We There Yet?’ on October 6th . Rick today launches the album alongside its first single, ‘Dippin My Feet’ , and announces details of a UK headline tour which starts with two prestigious dates at London’s Royal Albert Hall this November followed by massive arena dates in 2024 culminating at Manchester’s AO Arena . On the tour Rick will be joined by very special guests Belinda Carlisle (except London ) and The Feeling ( London only). The news comes as Rick prepares to make his Glastonbury debut this Saturday when he opens the Pyramid Stage

‘Are We There Yet?’ is the sound of Rick reflecting and building upon the experiences he’s gone through since the release of 2018’s ‘Beautiful Life’ . Some of the new songs were started during lockdown in 2020 , but he decided to leave them deliberately unfinished until it was feasible to play them live again. A simple, unadorned piano ballad ‘Blue Sky’ speaks of the natural serenity that came from lockdown, but it’s a set that draws upon an eclectic array of inspirations.

Some are the result of the invigoration that Rick has enjoyed while celebrating the music of The Smiths during life-affirming shows with Blossoms . Others came from his huge sold-out North American arena tour with New Kids On The Block , Salt ‘N’ Pepa and En Vogue . Between shows, Rick would often gaze at the seemingly infinite roads ahead of him and think, ‘Are We There Yet?’.

Rick says, “Now, that phrase has multiple meanings. Are we there yet in my musical ambitions? Am I done with my career? Have we arrived? Or are we still travelling?”

The time that Rick spent in America’s heartland together with his lifelong love of soul stalwarts Bill Withers , Al Green and Marvin Gaye also informed the new album. It’s particularly prominent in ‘Dippin My Feet’ , which puts an invigorating twist on Rick’s signature style. Rich with scorching, mid-summer vibes, the song sees Rick putting his own feelgood spin on both the Memphis soul tradition and Stax Records’ old school R&B. The song has just received its first play from Zoe Ball at Radio 2 .

Rick adds, “It’s not Americana, but the tag-line at the start of the chorus is: ‘Dipping my feet in the Mississippi River…’ It’s definitely not country, but I’ve never twanged a guitar as much as I have in the past couple of months. And there’s a bit more emotion with those guitar parts. I just think spending five months in America has retuned my ear a little bit.”

As with ‘50’ and ‘Beautiful Life’ , the album was entirely written, recorded and produced by Rick at his home studio in south-west London . He performed almost everything you hear throughout the record, the only exceptions being brass, keyboards and some backing vocals. As a result, ‘Are We There Yet?’ shows that Rick is still pushing to reach even greater musical heights, in the process guaranteeing entertainment and joy on record, on stream, on radio and on stage.

‘Are We There Yet?’ is available to pre-order HERE . In addition to its digital release, physical formats include a CD, a CD with a signed postcard, and a coloured vinyl. Rick’s official store offers exclusive products such as a vinyl picture disc, a deluxe CD and a cassette. There is also a CD with an alternative colour sleeve, which will be stocked exclusively by HMV .

In addition to the new tour dates and Glastonbury , Rick is also confirmed to play Standon Calling (July 23rd), Kendal Calling ( July 29th ), Paloznaki Jazzpiknik in Hungary ( August 3rd ), Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen ( August 11th ), Carfest South ( August 25th ), The Big Feastival ( August 27th ) and Radio 2 Live in The Park ( September 17th ).
