A Day Trip to Amedee Island, New Caledonia

Amedee is a small island to the south of New Caledonia’s capital, Noumea. It is definitely picturesque – the white sand of the island is surrounded by shallow, pristine waters.

As I was in Noumea, and looking for things to do, it quickly floated up on my list of things to do. Well, it is just 24 kilometres from Noumea, so just a short boat ride.

Amedee Island

Amedee Island is a white-sand island surrounded by pristine waters. The seas around Amedee offer plenty of snorkeling opportunities off the beach. In addition, the day tours to Amedee offer tours on a glass-bottom boat. The island is only 24 kilometers from Noumea, which is why it tends to top the list of must-do activities for anyone visiting the capital.

The island has a long, sandy beach. Other than that, the island is pretty much covered in scrubby vegetation. In terms of wildlife on the island, there’s basically some birdlife (and their nesting areas), and a couple of types of snakes.

Historically, the island’s lighthouse played a key role in navigating the Boulari Passage. Using the lighthouse provided a way of sailing through one of the few gaps in the 930-mile-long barrier reef that surrounds New Caledonia’s main island.

The lighthouse itself stands at 184 feet. Originally constructed in France, it was dismantled and shipped to New Caledonia. One could argue that the lighthouse wasn’t entirely a success story. The eagle-eyed can spot a few shipwrecks dotted around the area. Nevertheless, these days it acts as a bit of a tourist attraction itself.

The tour operators have set out a number of deck chairs along the beach. There are a few activities on the island, some of which are included in the ticket price of the tour.

Getting There

While it appears you can take a water taxi over, I opted for a day tour with Mary D Tours. This came in at a cost of about $179 (Australia) and included hotel pickups, the boat trip across, lunch, and various activities.

Pickup from the hotel was bright and early, at 7:15am. This gave a little time for a quick breakfast, before heading off to catch the Mary D Seven across to Amedee Island. On boarding we were each given a coloured wristband to wear. The colour of the band signified the time you had been allocated for the glass bottom boat.

As it is an early start, you can buy breakfast onboard. In addition, you were given the program for the day. The ride over was comfortable enough. As with much of Noumea, the staff communicated in both French and English.

On the Island

After 45 minutes on the boat, we arrived at Amedee Island. Shortly after that, it was time to get off the boat and get oriented with the island.

There are basically two types of snakes on the island, and you can easily tell them apart, as they are different colours. The first snake I saw was of the blue and black kind. Later I saw the yellow and black snake. It is worth noting that they are all around.

The snakes are semi-aquatic. They find their food in the water, and come onto land to mate and digest food. While they are apparently venomous, they are not aggressive. In fact, they seem pretty chilled out. Basically, the best plan seems to be to just leave them alone, and they will leave you alone.

An Amedee Snake

The Lighthouse

An obvious attraction of the island is the lighthouse (or Phare as it is in French).. You can buy a ticket to climb to the top of the lighthouse, as this is not included in the day trip. Fortunately, it is not expensive.

Towering 56 metres above the island, you can climb the 247 steps of its cast iron staircase. While you can’t get right to the top, it is close enough. From the top, you can see panoramic views of the area.

amedee island tour price

The tour includes an all-you-can-eat buffet. We were called to the lunch pretty much dead on 11:45 am. First up, you collect a pre-lunch drink. There are two choices, but as I was to find out, the plastic cup was important. If you wanted a wine or beer from the bar, you needed to take the plastic cup with you.

Linch Welcome Drink

Linch Welcome Drink

Lunch consisted of a wide variety of dishes, While a buffet, the staff served portions of each dish into individual serving dishes. Of course, you could take as many as you want, but who wants to look greedy!

Lunch is Served

Lunch is Served

Following lunch, there was a demonstration of local dancing.

amedee island tour price

Post Lunch Activities

After lunch, there were two demostrations. Firstly, there was a demonstration of how to grate a coconut. Along the way was a discussion on selecting a coconut, and opening it to prepare for grating. The result was both coconut water, and grated coconut.

Secondly, there was a demonstration of pareo tying. A pareo is a type of wraparound skirt worn in the Pacific Islands. It was a bit of an eye-opener to see the number of ways it could be tied.

amedee island tour price

At the end if the day, it was time to leave the island behind and headback to Noumea.

Heading Back

Final Words

My initial thoughts on taking this trip were that it sounded a bit expensive for what it was. However, having done the trip, it was a good, well organised day, with plent of activities.

  • Luckybeckyblue 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles It was OK, won't do it again A little disappointing. We always look for small group tours. This one is described as having a max of 15 passengers. In fact, there were approximately 80 of us. We spent a lot of time standing around waiting for the tour to start. Then we were led to another spot near some boats where we were instructed to sit along a concrete wall. We waited some more while our leader took a lot of time to organize us into smaller groups for the ride to Signal Island. As luck would have it, we were in the very last group called. It was a lot of waiting before our group ever got called. The ride to the island was long and VERY rough. Fortunately we aren't bothered by sea sickness. If this is a problem for you, or if you have back problems, I strongly advise against taking this ride. The island was lovely but had very little shade. The few shady spots that were available had been claimed long before we ever arrived. And you'll want shade -- the sun is very intense. The snorkeling was OK. We saw one turtle. The water was kind of murky. On the other side of the island the water was much clearer, but there was no coral and therefore no sea life to observe. Amenities were very limited. We brought our own water, none was provided. There were just a few noodles for many people to share and they were pretty well worn. Read more Written 24 April 2024
  • rodcatz 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointed 7 years ago I booked a private tour after arriving on a cruise with Dal Ocean Charter and it was amazing (see previous review). Had such a great time and when we were coming back I contacted Frederic to go on the tour again. This time I was told the private tour with food and guide was unavailable but he did have a private water taxi tour for 1-11 people to signal island. In reality it was 60 people across 5 boats all dropped on Signal Island with another tour company dropping off about the same and the exact opposite of what experience we were looking for. If you use words “private water taxi” it should mean “private” Read more Written 24 March 2024
  • Andrea S 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic natural setting and snorkeling Well organized and easy to find when coming off the cruise ship. Transfer was quick to the island, which is a beautiful natural spot. Swam with turtles and walked around the island looking at the history and birds. Hints provided on what to see where and extra equipment available. Was well run and reasonably priced. Glad we got out of town for the visit. Read more Written 24 March 2024
  • rickbiederstadt 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing Snorkeling Day at Signal Island with Noumea Turtle Tours Today, March 19, 2024 we toured Signal Island with Noumea Turtle Tours from Noumea. This was a Great Day! Although it was raining in Noumea, the tour company carried on. Noumea Turtle Tours as an operator was professional, timely, effectively communicated, and was cost effective at $70AUS. The boat was approximately 20-25 minutes to Signal Island, provided us instructions on where to snorkel, dropped us off on the beach, continued to follow-up with us while on the Island, and notified us when it was time for the taxi to return to Noumea. Saw so many varied colored fish, great coral reef, and multiple turtles. The only check box not covered was reef sharks. We even saw a sea snake. Overall, I would HIGH recommend this snorkeling tour/operator. We originally booked a tour with Manu at regenttours.nc /Noumea Turtle Tours and city tour who did a bate and switch on the tour we booked. Then we moved to Noumea Turtle Tours who SAVED OUR DAY in Noumea. If you hear from Manu at regenttours.nc /Noumea Turtle Tours and city tour RUN AWAY! and GO WITH NOUMEA TURTLE TOURS as the Operator! • DoreenH2016 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A must do! A beautiful day on Signal island swimming with the turtles. It actually surpassed what I was expecting. The taxi boat was actually quite comfortable with seating available as opposed to how some of the reviews made the excursion sound. It is true that one of the taxi boats did have seating on a column that you would have to straddle, but the family of boys who were on my taxi really liked that as they enjoyed the waves. I sat in a standard bench seat and the waves did not bother me at all. Once boarded, it took about 25 minutes to get to the island. We had a bit of an overcast day which was fine. We saw many turtles. So, if it isn’t a sunshiny day in Noumea, please don’t let that stop you from enjoying this journey. The island itself was pristine and you can walk around it in about 20 minutes. Definitely worth the stroll as once you get away from the area where most everyone is snorkeling, it is like you are on a deserted island. Very beautiful. And there are toilets available. The staff w Dal Ocean was very professional and they handled the water taxis extremely well. Never felt “afraid” being on the water with them even though we had some chop on the ride back. Highly recommend this tour. Read more Written 10 March 2024
  • sstayner 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great snorkeling trip to a pristine island. No services, except latrine, so take your lunch Amazing Snorkeling at Signal Island. I took my wife and twin boys, now 5 years old, for the second time. We did this as a private side l shore excursion for a second time. First was in 2023. My boys were 4 years old the first time. Now they are better at snorkeling. They like the boat ride over (like a roller coaster). We saw a sea turtle from the boat and another two while snorkeling close to the shore. When we go again, I will start snorkeling from the pier. The coral there was very colorful and many fish. Read more Written 1 March 2024

The boat ride is a bit bumpy but never felt unsafe. Don’t worry about not taking food, but maybe take a bottle of water or two. You’re just not there long enough to worry. Snorkeling was amazing. We were very pleased we’d pre booked it. There were 4 boats taking small groups of people to the island. They were organised and gave clear instructions on the process. We enjoyed the speedy boat trip to the island and appreciated Dal Ocean lending us a noodle and snorkel set while on the island. We were dropped by our ship at the city cruise terminal and the tour group we had pre booked with was very easy to find. The trip out and back with April on the speedboat is a lot of fun. The water is beautiful and our kids were able to follow 6 0r 7 turtles feeding for hours. There was plenty of shade. We bought food from the Boulangerie a 5 min walk away (around corner from supermarket opposite the terminal). You don’t need flippers since water very calm. We took our own masks but these were also provided. English is very good. An absolute must do - don’t pay double to go to Amedee Is with the cruise groups! Read more Written 6 January 2024
