Deafheaven Unveil Infinite Granite Australian & New Zealand Tour
Posted on April 11, 2023 by Paul 'Browny' Brown
We were already stoked that Deafheaven were making it down under for Dark Mofo – where they’ll exclusively be playing Sunbather in full for us all – but they’ve also announced a tour alongside their appearance and by golly we’re keen!
Deafheaven will venture across the country, playing several shows in Melbourne and Perth – along with their biggest headline shows to date in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. The tour is on the back of their latest release Infinite Granite – which they dropped in 2021 and have been rearing to play for us since.
As for supports, Closure in Moscow have announced their forthcoming album SOFT HELL and debuted ‘ Better Way ‘ the lead single from it – so chances are they’ll be playing a bunch of new tunes too and RUN will be tearing up the stage – following their two new releases that cemented them as ones to watch in Aussie heavy music this year!

DEAFHEAVEN – Australian Tour
Cover shot – DEAFHEAVEN
American shoegaze-meets-black-metal trailblazers DEAFHEAVEN have announced their most extensive Australian & New Zealand headline tour to date, scheduled for May & June 2023.
Their first visit in over 4 years will see them play in Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney & Melbourne, as well as Wellington, Auckland and finally wrapping up the tour at Hobart’s Dark Mofo. The band will play multiple shows in Melbourne & Perth, as well as their biggest ever headline shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide.
The band are touring in support of their acclaimed new album ‘Infinite Granite.’ The record features some of their finest melodic songwriting to date, whilst exploring less intense sonic territory than their previous records.
From the uplift of ‘Great Mass of Color’ to the brooding ‘In Blur’, the record is awash with lush soundscapes conjured by the band and anchored by singer George Clarke’s startlingly impressive melodic tenor and multi part harmonies.
Their live show continues to be a juxtaposition of epic proportions and this tour will be no exception, with five diverse studio albums to draw from. The band will also celebrate 10 years of their seminal ‘blackgaze’ record ‘Sunbather’ by performing it in full exclusively at Dark Mofo Festival.
Joining the tour for all east coast shows will be Australian alternative rock quintet Closure in Moscow. With their recent single ‘Better Way’ the cult Melbourne band have signalled a return to their melodic, hook-laden roots and will release their new album ‘Soft Hell’ in late 2023.
Also in support will be Melbourne band RUN, featuring frontman Lochlan Watt (triple j’s The Racket, Nuclear Summer, Colossvs, Thy Art Is Murder). Their new single ‘Iris’ (a cover of the Goo Goo Dolls classic) is an intense collision of black metal, 90s alt rock, post-metal and metalcore – a perfect fit for this bill.
Opening in Melbourne will be Suldusk, whose gothic-acoustic sound has earned them a worldwide following purely by word of mouth.
Support in Perth comes from doom-jazz quartet Tangled Thoughts of Leaving. Known for their fiery and intense live performances, they will be releasing their first new material in 5 years in the coming weeks.

Deafheaven Announce 2023 Australian Tour
By Alex Gallagher
After being announced as part of this year’s Dark Mofo lineup last month, Californian black metal/shoegaze quintet Deafheaven have now announced a full Australian tour leading up to their festival appearance in Hobart.
The tour will kick off Wednesday, 31st May with the first of two consecutive evenings at Max Watts in Melbourne, with shows also booked for Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The tour will conclude with a performance as part of Dark Mofo on Thursday, 15th June, where Deafheaven will perform their seminal 2013 album Sunbather in full, exclusively as part of the festival.
Deafheaven – ‘In Blur’
The band will be joined in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane by Closure in Moscow , with Melbourne metalcore band RUN also performing on selected dates. See dates and venues below – tickets are on sale now.
Deafheaven’s return to Australia is a long time coming. The band last toured the country in 2019, with a string of headline shows in addition to an appearance at that year’s Farmer & the Owl festival. They were set to come back as part of last year’s edition of Dark Mofo, but were forced to cancel their appearance after a member of their team tested positive for COVID-19.
Since they last visited, Deafheaven have released their fifth studio album, Infinite Granite , which arrived in 2021. The album saw the band take a dramatic departure from the black metal influences that had been a core part of their sound from their inception, shifting to a more melodic, shoegaze-oriented style.
