Allan’s Tip

While Killarney has many, many great pubs, The Speakeasy is a gem, tiny and full of locals you are as likely to get a good tip for a horse as a pint in there and with a bookies across the street you can (legally) act on this, if you are brave enough!

South West Ireland Reviews

Exceeded my expectations.

I was with Mark Osborne, so had much of the same experiences. The 7 courses we played would be hard to beat: Old Head, Waterville, Tralee, Ballybunion (Cashen)/(Old), Lahinch, and Doonbeg. We ended up eating at all of the recommended restaurants and we pleased with all. We had 8 golfers, so making reservations as early as possible is highly recommended. We often had chowder for lunch after our rounds. The chowder at Lahinch is not to be missed.

Mike Taylor was our driver and was perfect. Helpful, prompt, informative, funny, and professional are some of the adjectives to describe him. The coach was large and accommodating with everyone having more than enough room. Most importantly, Mike got us to our destinations on time and safely.

We experienced every type of weather imaginable. One day was a shorts day with plenty of sunshine and only moderate wind (2 extra clubs). The other days had winds which required shots with 4+ extra clubs. We did get the remnants of two hurricanes which added to the rain and wind.

Five of the caddies we had were off the charts good (clubbing, finding balls. humorous and reading putts). The other younger caddies were better than average but compared to the older caddies, were not as proficient. One day we rode in carts and our fore caddy was awesome. Caddies made a huge difference and I do not see how we could have played decent golf without them.

They’re those who will bypass Doonbeg because of the Trump name. They will have deprived themselves from a great experience. The course conditions were the best of the 7 courses we played. The clubhouse was easily the best.

We had researched a number of companies, before choosing Premier. We obviously made the right choice.

The seven day test.

The golf on Old Head was scary good. Waterville was a tough beauty even without the wind gusting over 40. I want another shot at Tralee without the rain and 35 mph winds (we wimped out after nine holes). Ballybunion Cashen was extremely demanding and unique. Ballybunion Old exceeded expectations and had a couple of crazy holes that were even more fun. Lahinch was spectacular. No matter what you think of Trump, he runs a hell of a course at Doonbeg.

If you’re game isn’t sharp or you’re advancing in years, don’t be afraid to move to more forward tees. The caddies will love you for it. BTW, if given the choice, always take a caddie….worth ever penny as entertainment and as a stroke saver.

Our coach driver, Mike was THE BEST. You need not worry about anything with him in charge.

Our hotels were top notch. No cookie cutter facilities were they. It was sometimes difficult to get a full breakfast if we had an early tee time.

All in all Premier puts together a spectacular package to Ireland.

A wonderful trip

Thank you for such a wonderful trip! I had an absolute blast and a vacation of a lifetime. Although the trip was no rest for the weary I wouldn’t have it any other way. Got absolutely drenched at Tralee as goretex can only hold on for so long but that course just might be my favorite along with Ballybunnion. Battled 30-40 mph winds at Waterville and ended the golf trip with back to back birdies! Really enjoyed my time at Lahinch and Doonbeg as well.

Can’t believe I never got in a wreck with the car considering the hairpin turns and the locals racing like F1 drivers and it is true…the Guinness is definitely much better!

South West Ireland Golf Regional Picks

The Old Head of Kinsale in Cork, Ballybunion Golf Club in Kerry and Adare Manor in Limerick. All world-famous golf destinations in their own right and all located within a relatively small distance of one another. In terms of testing your own raw-powered drive and the yardstick in general, it's hard to find better courses anywhere in the world. Add to this some of the most spectacular vistas you'll find on any golf course and it's safe to say that golfing in Ireland's Southwest is as good as it gets.

Par 72 • 7,130 yards

Calling on designers and collaborators from a diverse range of golfing fields and relying on the stunning setting presented by mother nature, the Old Head Of Kinsale has grown to become one of the planet's most sought after golfing days out. Built on a 220-acre near chunk of land that reaches out over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean, with a lighthouse at its peak and the ocean surrounding you at all sides, it really is a golfing experience like no other. The par 72, 18 holes are broken down by five Par 5s, five Par 3s and eight Par 4s, nine of which play along the cliff tops. Enjoy oak lined locker rooms, a warm up range, a putting green and an area to practice your short game. There's also an executive helicopter service, should the mood take you.

Cork Golf Club

Par 72 • 6,813 yards.

Situated on the banks of the Lee in the Little Island area, Cork Golf Club intermixes its parkland character with many of the most enjoyable aspects of linksl and terrain. Throughout the year, the turf is firm and dry like a links course which makes shot making an interesting challenge. Designed by Alister MacKenzie in the early 1900s, this course makes good use of a landscape which was previously used as a quarry, with lots of interesting changes in elevation. Cork Golf Club, also known as Little Island Golf CLub, is full of character and brings local and visiting golfers back again and again.

Ballybunion Golf Club

Par 71 • 6,738 yards.

Until the 1980s, when Tom Watson declared it one of the world's finest golf courses, Ballybunion was largely unknown to the outside world. Since that time, however, its carpark has been full of coaches and limousines as golf fans from all backgrounds pay tribute to a links course that truly sets the standard. Summer visitors should expect to book as much as a full year in advance.

Dooks Golf Club

Par 71 • 6,511 yards.

In 2006, the completion of a four-year course redesign by architect Martin Hawtree saw Dooks emerge as one of the truly great courses in links golf. And yet it remains relatively unknown internationally. The good news is that the best-kept secret of Irish golf has very affordable green fees and comparatively quiet tees as a result. Against the charming backdrop of Dingle Bay, take on a links course that presents challenges for all golfers while remaining accessible for all abilities.

Dooks Golf Club

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club

Mahoney's point: par 72 • 6,564 yards, killeen: par 72 • 6,470 yards.

With so much challenging links golf to be had throughout County Kerry, the Killeen and Mahoney's Point courses in Killarney can be a welcome change, and both stand out for their distinctly Irish interpretation of parkland play. Originally built out of one Old Course, today's two courses show little evidence of dilution and both can be counted among the Emerald Isle's very best parkland offerings. The Killeen Course is noted for the outstanding quality of its greens. Mahoney's Point stands out because of its stunning views across the lake to the mountains beyond.

Ring of Kerry Golf and Country Club

Par 73 • 6,663 yards.

A uniquely Irish parkland, the Ring of Kerry course is woven into a landscape that could have been created for golf. From this high-up vantage point, players behold a scene of quintessentially Irish beauty, with Kenmare Bay below - bejewelled by tiny islets - and the Caha Mountains beyond. The playing surface is quite firm for a parkland, giving the play a slightly links-like feel. And the frequent threat of long grass and patches of gorse add to the sense that this perhaps more a hybrid than a pure parkland. However you categorise it, few will dispute that this is a fantastic course which makes great use of a challenging mountain landscape.

Tralee Golf Club

Par 72 • 6,870 yards.

Visiting Tralee's rugged coastline before he began work on what would be his first and perhaps his finest European course, architect Arnold Palmer observed that he had never seen a more perfect place to build a golf course. A windswept links course with a fairly flat front nine, Tralee always holds the threat of challenging weather which can disappear as quickly as it emerges from the brooding Atlantic. According to Tom Clarke, The back nine is the more dramatic overall, although the 2nd and 3rd ensure it doesn't have it all its own way – first an awe-inspiring 600-yarder doglegging round the cliffs, then a daunting par 3 on the very edge of the rocky shoreline.

Tralee Golf Club

  • hiddenlinksgolf.com

Par 72 • 7,347 yards

Designed by John Mulcahy and opened in 1972, Waterville is famous for its gruelling, unforgiving length. But those who travel here to experience the punishment for themselves may be disappointed. The competition tees (7,378 yards) are more than 500 yards longer than the white tees and are usually off-limits to non-competitive players. This makes Waterville actually shorter than several of Ireland's top-name courses. Still, the disappointment will not last long and this traditional Irish links offers a great afternoon's golf to all who make the trip.

southern ireland golf trip

Eamonn/Sarah,   Thanks for organizing our group of 8 for a golfing memory of a lifetime!  Each one of the 7 courses we played in SW Ireland were stunning and surpassed our expectations.  Thank you Sarah for the excellent hotels in the perfect location and for knowing the hotel staff would put out a fantastic Irish breakfast at 5:00am for those early morning tee times. Your attention to detail was second to none!  A special bonus of getting us Pat as a driver who shared his extensive knowledge of Ireland as we traveled through your beautiful country along with his quick Irish wit!   It's a trip we will all never forget!   Slainte,   Jim Holihan NY (USA) September 2023
Good morning Eamonn,   Greg and I can't thank you enough for organizing and overseeing our fantastic trip to your wonderful country.   It was truly great from start to finish. Our driver Tommy took good care of us.  We all had quite a few laughs together. We thoroughly enjoyed the golf courses, even though we could have done with one Irish weather experience - I may be the only guy ever to say that ! Thanks again for everything.  I will surely recommend you and hope that I can make a return trip in the near future.  Stay well and Slainte, Eamonn. Jim and Greg  NJ, USA September 2023
Hi Elaine, Thank you so much for the wonderful vacation that you arranged for our family.  The accommodations at the three hotels were fantastic.  Adare Manor is truly magical.  The guys thoroughly enjoyed their golf adventures.  The sunshine for their last round at Adare was the perfect ending. Nigel was terrific!  Not only did he drive us everywhere we needed to go, but he was an expert at by-passing the entrance lines and getting us right in to any attraction.  We could not have had a better host.  Please pass along our thanks again.  The other drivers were all great as well. It was not an easy task to accommodate three generations, golfers and non-golfers, but you succeeded well.  We look forward to our Scotland adventure next summer! Best regards,   Bill, Sandi and family,   July 2023
Elaine - Our group had an outstanding time in Ireland and much of that has to do with your fantastic planning and organization.  We all had high expectations for this trip and those lofty expectations were exceeded. Ireland is a beautiful country and the people are so welcoming.  The hotel accommodations were excellent and the overall itinerary was perfect.  All of us were very impressed with how smooth everything went .. from hotel check in, golf reservations, driver pickups etc.  Absolutely no glitches anywhere on the trip.  The golf was an unforgettable experience.  All the courses were top notch and exactly what we were hoping to experience in Ireland.  Finally, our driver Con.  He made the trip.  Con is such a warm, friendly gentlemen with a wonderful personality.  We loved hearing him talk about his beloved country and share his knowledge on social and political climate in Ireland.   S Barker USA June 2023
Elaine, Thank you for putting together an amazing 8 day trip for our gang of golfing misfits. You did an incredible job of coordinating the arrival/departure and other random requests from the guys in compiling a world class itinerary. The accommodations, courses and meal suggestions were all terrific. We were blessed by amazing weather which turned our great trip into an epic one. Special shout out to our driver Con who did an incredible job of cat herding, all the while entertaining, the boys with history lessons and amusing anecdotes. We would not hesitate to recommend you both to anyone seeking the golf trip of a lifetime. Cheers Greg. Greg Swart, California, May 23
Michael:   Thanks so much. The trip was perfect. Seriously, I can hardly imagine it being better. Thank you so much again for your assistance. I had a great time.    All the best, Michael R. USA May 2023
Elaine…..Almost home for a week now but still glowing over the experience.  Everyone had a great time and gave me all the credit.  I did inform them that though I spent much more time working on this adventure than I ever thought I would, it was you who made it work so well.  Tim was also just terrific.  He was extremely easy to work with and kept us informed of the schedule of pick-ups and drop offs so that all went very smoothly.  We had a smattering of rain one day at Dooks and played in a windstorm at Waterville but all else was good.   Thanks again, Steve Angel USA - May 2023

Phil & Robyn Gleadhill. (Australia)

Hi Elaine, We truly couldn't have asked for better. Everything went so well. We were so blessed with the weather. We only needed our wet weather gear for about 3 holes at Enniscrone, and for most of our final round at Ardglass. All the rest of the golf was dry and mostly sunny, and not overly windy either. Our sightseeing days were similarly blessed, and we packed a lot of things in, including some significant walks and hikes as well as some of the attractions you suggested. The accommodation was all very good and varied so every stay was a little different.  The included breakfasts were a real winner.  We covered about 3,500 KM all up. Quite a drive. Highly recommended and a first-class job done - thank you! Regards,

Phil & Robyn Gleadhill. (Australia)

Susan and Brian (USA)

Dear Elaine, We wanted to thank all those involved at Golf Vacations Ireland for organizing our recent trip. It was a 2.5 year wait and well worth it. The accommodations, restaurants , driver and most importantly the golf were all wonderful! We were glad to have 2.5 years more of practice so we were not totally embarrassed on those amazing golf courses. Surely we gave the caddies lots of stories to tell to their peers. Thank you for sticking with us over the pandemic and for all your assistance and accommodations made during that time. We hope we will be back and will definitely be referring you to our friends and family! Thanks again and take care,

Susan and Brian (USA)

Gregory Comfort (USA)

Eamonn- We had a fantastic time on our trip. One very interesting day of weather at Waterville, but overall it was just an absolutely awesome trip. Finishing on royal county down was a great way to end the trip. Thank you for helping to arrange everything. Otherwise, I just wanted to say thank you, and we will plan on using you again if we are lucky enough to make a trip back in the future.

Gregory Comfort (USA)

Dean Robertson (GA, USA)

Eamonn/Elaine, I just wanted to drop a note to tell you what a great time we had. After 2 years or so we were finally able to get to Ireland to play some great golf courses. The people were friendly, the courses were magnificent, the pubs were warm, the Guinness was cold and plentiful, and even the weather was perfect. Even with all of this it still does not compare to how great Donal was. He was knowledgeable, kind, and very accommodating. He took great care of us and we in turn took great care of him. I would highly recommend him for any type of group you may host in the future. I will be sure to leave a five-star recommendation for golf vacations Ireland as well. Thank you for your patience.

Dean Robertson (GA, USA)

David and Susan (USA)

Hi Eamonn and Elaine, We just returned to the States tonight from our magnificent trip to Ireland. We had a fantastic time. All the arrangements went smoothly and worked perfectly. The hotels were great, the golf courses were incredible. Sean did a great job driving and being the tour guide. And we were particularly impressed with how you both arranged such perfect weather for us. Seriously, the trip was just fantastic and the planning that you both did for us was great. We particularly enjoyed the Merrion Hotel in Dublin and the Killarney Park Hotels. And the trip to the Cliffs of Moher on the 1st day worked out very well. The Kilmainham Gaol tour was very enlightening and very well worth it. We also really liked the Jameson tour. Thank you again for planning such a great tour!

Eamonn/Elaine, Thanks again for all your help on planning our trip, and for sticking with us the past three years. It took some time, but I can say categorically that this was my best trip ever to Ireland/Scotland - and I’ve done it 9 times. It was a great itinerary, great courses and great hotels. Thanks again for everything John

Golf Courses: Old Head, Lahinch, Ballybunion, Waterville, Tralee, Dooks

Southwest Ireland perhaps can’t be beaten. Each course finds its way onto World Top 100 lists and they all showcase the beauty of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way seamlessly. Most memorable is probably the links at Old Head, where the coastal topography creates as dramatic a setting for golf as you will find anywhere in the world.

Northern Ireland*

*sold out for 2024, book now for 2025

southern ireland golf trip

Golf Courses: Royal Portrush, Royal County Down, Portmarnock, Portstewart, Ardglass, Castlerock

Home to just 2 million people, Northern Ireland punches above its weight in the world of golf. With major champions and championship links venues alike, golf has become an integral part of the country’s identity. Juggernauts Royal County Down and Royal Portrush share the limelight, but next to each are a few other coastal gems that shouldn’t be missed.

Northwest Ireland*

*still available for 2024

southern ireland golf trip

Golf Courses Rosapenna (St. Patrick’s and Sandy Hills), Enniscrone, Ballyliffin, Carne, Narin and Portnoo

Northwest Ireland is perhaps the most underrated golf destination on the planet and certainly the most surprising for our clients. Despite critical acclaim, the area gets overlooked by its more famous neighbors to the south and northeast. However, don’t be fooled: with dunes as high as anywhere in Ireland and the Wild Atlantic Way’s rugged coastline offering a stunning backdrop, Northwest Ireland is on par with Ireland’s best. Read more about the region HERE .

*options still available for 2024

southern ireland golf trip

Golf Courses: Portmarnock, European Club, Druids Glen, Island, County Louth, Royal Dublin

Ireland’s capital city has no shortage of things to do and see and the real difficulty is deciding what to leave off of your itinerary. A great line-up of golf courses sit within 90 minutes of the city-center, including a Ryder Cup host and several World Top 100 layouts. It’s the non-golfing activities, though, that sets the Dublin area apart. Historically significant and culturally relevant sites abound and some time in the Temple Bar area is a must.

Old Head

Dangling off of Ireland's southern coast atop a promontory that towers hundreds of feet above the Atlantic, the Links of Old Head occupies perhaps the most spectacular setting for golf on the planet. Enough said.

2020-06-17 13:56:05

Lahinch

The 2019 Irish Open host shares the same stretch of County Clare's coastline with the Cliffs of Moher so designer Alistair MacKenzie had a great canvas on which to work. So good in fact, that after completion MacKenzie, who worked on the likes of Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne, called Lahinch the finest course that he or anyone else ever constructed.

2020-06-17 14:10:04

Ballybunion - Old

Ballybunion - Old

Tom Watson’s favorite golf course is regularly ranked as Ireland’s best course and it's not hard to see why. The design's great variety of holes are carved between massive sand dunes and the result is a visually challenging but stunning test.

2020-06-17 14:10:19

Waterville

Located at the end of the Ring of Kerry, Waterville effortlessly encapsulates the beauty and serenity of County Kerry's Macgillycuddy's Reeks Mountains and Atlantic shoreline. Don't be fooled though, as the course is as challenging as they come. In fact, member Tiger Woods has been known to fine-tune his game there in advance of the Open Championship.

2020-06-17 14:10:32

Tralee

Tralee's layout plays across two distinctly different nines. The front is more subdued, although it has a fun mix of holes with the standout par 3 third playing towards castle ruins. The back, though, is pure magic and may be Ireland's best nine holes. With elevated views across miles of Atlantic coastline, the setting inspired designer Arnold Palmer to proclaim: “I designed the front 9 and god designed the back."

2020-06-17 14:11:19

Doonbeg

The seaside village of Doonbeg is home to Greg Norman's only course in the British Isles and upon seeing the property's mountainous dunes and location alongside Doughmore Bay, Norman proclaimed he was the luckiest designer in the world. Situated between the likes of Lahinch and Ballybunion, and voted among Golf Digest’s World Top 100, the Shark's work should not be missed.

2020-08-05 19:19:51

Adare Manor

Adare Manor

Simply put, Adare Manor is Ireland's most luxurious golfing experience. Billionaire JP McManus poured €100 million into an overhaul of the former Irish Open host, and the investment paid off with news that the course will host the 2027 Ryder Cup. The parkland layout is a great compliment to Southwest Ireland's classic seaside links.

2020-07-30 23:12:43

Dooks

Founded in 1889, Dooks is one of Ireland's oldest clubs and also one of it's most beautiful. The course sits along the Ring of Kerry between the McGillycuddy Reeks mountains and Dingle Bay and its distinct, quirky layout is an absolute joy to play.

2020-07-30 23:13:12

Ballybunion - Cashen

Ballybunion - Cashen

Although overshadowed by the neighboring Old Course, the Cashen Course stands on its own among Ireland's best courses. The topography of the Cashen is dramatic, with tight fairways cut between the tallest dunes at Ballybunion (even bigger than the Old Course!). In fact, designer Robert Trent Jones called the Cashen the finest piece of links land he had ever seen. To overlook it would be a mistake.

2020-07-30 23:13:34

Dingle

Dingle Golf Links, known locally as Ceann Sibeal, is actually the westernmost course in all of Europe, and its secluded location at the tip of the breathtakingly beautiful Dingle Peninsula feels like the edge of the world. You may hear the native Irish language between locals but a warm welcome awaits visitors to this awe-inspiring, rugged coastal links.

2020-06-17 14:04:55

Royal Portrush - Dunluce

Royal Portrush - Dunluce

History, beauty, strategy, challenge, ambiance: the 2019 Open Championship host has it all. With views up the cliffs to Dunluce Castle, the signature 5th probably stands out. However, after a successful redesign project in advance of the 148th Open, there are no weak holes on this Harry Colt masterpiece.

2020-06-17 14:04:40

Royal County Down - Championship

Royal County Down - Championship

Golf Digest's top course in the world for several years running, RCD is nestled at the base of the Mourne Mountains and is truly a sight to behold. Don't get lost in the scenery though; focus and strategy are paramount if you want to successfully navigate across and around the hollows and burrows that challenge golfer's on just about every hole.

2020-06-17 14:04:02

Portstewart - Strand

Portstewart - Strand

From the very first tee shot, it is abundantly clear that Portstewart is something special. Throughout the first nine it feels as though you may be swallowed by gigantic dunes before the back opens up with views across the River Bann and beyond. Don't be fooled by John Rahm's record score of 24 under in the 2017 Irish Open, the Strand is anything but easy.

2020-06-17 14:03:45

Ardglass

Ardglass is one of the most picturesque courses in Ireland and tons of fun. Golfers set out from the shadows of a 15th-century castle clubhouse, the oldest in golf, across a great mix of clifftop holes and risk-reward inland holes and inevitably leave wanting more.

2020-06-17 14:03:25

Castlerock

Castlerock shares the Causeway Coast with the likes of Portrush and Portstewart but feels more genuine and authentic. The first tee sets off from the dunes near town-center and the course follows the railway out towards the River Bann before turning back into the heart of the course at the 6th and ending back among the dunes that beautifully frame the eighteenth. Make sure to add a quick nine on the dramatic neighboring Bann Course which showcases the biggest dunes on the property.

2022-11-18 21:51:53

Rosapenna - St. Patrick's

Rosapenna - St. Patrick's

Golf at Rosapenna dates to the 1800s but the addition of the St Patrick’s Links course in 2021 has elevated the resort to soaring new heights. Designer Tom Doak actually reconfigured the remnants of two separate, dormant, 18-hole layouts into one spectacular modern links, his first in Ireland. The sprawling layout, which rises and falls amongst massive dunes along Sheephaven Bay, is simply a modern masterpiece.

2022-11-18 21:52:00

Narin and Portnoo

Narin and Portnoo

Narin and Portnoo is tucked away in the far northwest corner of Ireland and for most of its 90+ years of existence it has been out of mind and out of site of golf travelers, to say the least. That all changed recently when world-renowned architect Gil Hanse was brought in to enhance the simple elegance of the rugged coastal gem. Our advice is to get there soon before the masses get word of what he has done.

2020-06-17 14:00:15

Enniscrone

The great Eddie Hackett had a hand in the course's design, which is challenging but absolutely breathtaking! When you aren't amidst the course's towering namesake Dunes, through which many of the holes wind, the views of the River Moy Estuary and across Killala Bay are on full display.

2020-06-17 14:00:53

Ballyliffin - Glashedy

Ballyliffin - Glashedy

Host of the 2018 Irish Open, the Glashedy Course is the newer of two fantastic courses at Ireland's northern-most golf club. The club is located along a stretch of stunning coastline overlooking the Glashedy Rock, Ireland's version of Turnberry's Ailsa Craig. The signature par three 7th is a standout, with views that can only be described as vast across what feels like the entirety of County Donegal.

2020-06-17 14:00:28

County Sligo

County Sligo

Often referred to as Rosses Point, County Sligo Golf Club is consistently rated among Ireland's best courses thanks to its strategic layout and stunning location. The course is nestled between the Atlantic and the Dartry Mountains with the flat-topped Benbulben framing many of the holes. Less was more for designer Harry Colt, who left the dune-covered contours of the land as they were and the result is both natural and masterful.

2020-06-17 13:59:58

Rosapenna - Sandy Hills

Rosapenna - Sandy Hills

Golf at Rosapenna's Old Course dates to the 1800s but Pat Ruddy's masterpiece, the Sandy Hills Links, truly put the club among Ireland's finest. Ruddy's design cuts straight through the largest of the dunes alongside the picturesque Sheephaven Bay, and the result is a little intimidating and a lot captivating.

2020-06-17 13:59:44

Carne

The secluded links in Belmullet is about as far off the beaten path as you can get for a championship-quality course but that just adds to the allure. Famed architect Eddie Hackett called Carne his best work. To be honest though, the layout is somewhat inconsequential as the wild, natural dunescape is the star of the show.

2020-06-17 13:59:18

Cruit Island

Cruit Island

Often regarded among the World's greatest 9-hole courses, Cruit Island is Ireland's most remote course and probably its most dramatic as well. The course is characterized by massive elevation changes and expansive views across to Owey Island but the highlight is probably the short 6th, which is perched precariously on the clifftops seemingly on the edge of the world.

2020-06-17 13:58:57

Portmarnock

Portmarnock

Dublin's crown jewel, Portmarnock Golf Club, is highly respected and universally praised as one of the world's best links designs thanks to its brilliant layout that is natural, playable and fair. The experience is less vivid and more nuanced, as history abounds amidst striking simplicity.

2020-06-17 13:58:43

European Club

European Club

The European Club is Irish-renowned architect Pat Ruddy's pride and joy and he is on a never-ending quest to perfect this modern links. Some of Ruddy's design decisions incite passionate debates about what constitutes pure links golf but there is no debating that the setting is spectacular. The experience is unique: no caddies, a secluded quiet club considering its stature, and 20 total holes - including 2 bonus par threes!

2020-06-17 13:57:40

Island

The Island Golf Club was established in 1890 and, considering a long history, its a head-scratcher as to why it is not better known. Its authentic and alluring, with an instinctual layout covering a peninsula between the Irish Sea and Broadmeadow Estuary. You have now been warned: don't miss it!

2020-06-17 13:58:00

County Louth

County Louth

In terms of aesthetics, design, and quality, you would have to put County Louth, or Baltray as it is better known, among Ireland's best courses. As you wind your way to the club's isolated location north of Dublin alongside the Boyne estuary, anticipation builds and a feeling of solitude enhances the experience across 18 strong and enjoyable holes.

2022-11-18 21:53:22

Druids Glen

Druids Glen

The 4-time Irish Open host is located in the stunning mountainous region of County Wicklow south of Dublin. Set to reopen in 2023 following an extensive refurbishment, the parkland layout is tranquil and gorgeous, with manicured tree-lined fairways, historical landmarks, spectacular water features and vibrant floral displays that draw comparisons to none other than Augusta National!

2020-06-17 13:57:03

Portmarnock Links

Portmarnock Links

The Portmarnock Hotel is built on the former Jameson family estate and its Links Course is an up-and-coming gem north of Dublin, especially considering the substantial investment the entire property has received in recent years. Don't confuse the Links with its famous neighbor, Portmarnock Golf Club, which is just down the road and separately owned. Don't overlook the Links either. Its a lot of fun, especially once you get near the turn from where designer Bernhard Langer did his best work.

2020-07-30 23:24:05

Royal Dublin

Royal Dublin

Dublin's oldest golf club was formed in 1885 and sits on Bull Island, a UNESCO nature reserve just northeast of Ireland's capital city. Both Ballesteros and Langer have claimed Irish Opens at Royal Dublin, which plays as a true out-and-back links across the humps and hallows of the island's sandy terrain.

2020-06-17 13:58:29

K Club - Palmer North

K Club - Palmer North

If you feel like adding a parkland layout to your likely links-heavy Irish itinerary, the 2006 Ryder Cup host course at the K Club is a darn good option! The luxury resort sits on 550 acres of beautiful Kildare countryside just west of Dublin, and the Palmer North Course is its crown jewel. Bring your best game though, or Arnie's layout, which weaves through stately trees and around and across an abundance of water hazards, will chew you up and spit you out.

Your next golf trip to Ireland: Why you should consider these 15 hidden gems

southern ireland golf trip

We’re hearing you better act quick if you plan to travel overseas. Many of the most popular destinations for international travelers are booking up for 2022—and some even for 2023. Golf in Ireland is back after restrictions limited travel for much of the past two years.

Though you likely have courses like Ballybunion Old (No. 17 on Golf Digest’s most recent World 100 ranking) and Royal County Down in Northern Ireland (No. 1 on ours and most World 100 lists) in your sights, we’re here to point you to some hidden gems worth trying to get to. Perhaps these courses will have more availability in the next year or two … even more reason to head there.

With help from our friends at Golfbreaks by PGA TOUR , they helped us identify these hidden gems in Ireland.

Dublin/East :

Mixing some sightseeing and golf in and around Dublin is a trip we don’t need to sell you on. It’s a trip any golfer needs to do once in their life. And if you’re planning to do it in the next year or two, we’re here to help.

County Louth, Baltray, Co. Louth

Couty Louth GC #14

Laurence C Lambrecht

Other Irish gems get more fanfare, but it’s possible County Louth (above) is the best course in Ireland you don’t know about. Ranked in the top 100 of Golf Digest’s “Best Courses Outside the United States” in years past, County Louth ranked sixth in our most recent Best in Ireland list . Tom Simpson worked on an existing layout back in 1938 to create the fabulous links you can play today. Shane Lowry won the Irish Open as an amateur here back in 2009.

Royal Dublin Golf Club

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/royal-dublin-10th-hole.jpg

Harry S. Colt repaired and revamped Dublin’s oldest course after the grounds served as a musket training site during World War I. Martin Hawtree did some work to the gentle, mostly flat but rolling land in the early 2000s.

Portmarnock Hotel & G. Links

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/Portmarnock_11A.jpg

Located on the original Jameson estate, the Portmarnock Hotel & G. Links is a relatively new, Bernard Langer-designed resort layout that sits on the Irish Sea. It ranked 13th on Golf Digest’s most recent Best in Ireland rankings.

For trip planning purposes, these courses are all proper to pair with the above:

Portmarnock (Old)

The European Club

South West Ireland

One of Ireland’s most naturally beautiful regions is the South West, with its rugged outcroppings and rolling topography. That makes the golf in the area so, so good—and though many of the courses are on your radar already, we’re here to tell you about a few others.

Dooks Golf Club

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/Dooks 5.jpg

"STEVE CARR GOLF"

A stunning, rolling piece of natural dunesland can be found at Dooks Golf Club, 35 minutes from Killarney. The club was founded in 1889, making it one of the country’s oldest—but Martin Hawtree came in and renovated the course in 2006, securing it as being a must-add to your trip to the area.

Dingle Golf Links

Locals refer to it as Ceann Sibeal as the links sits right on the end of the Dingle Peninsula with incredible views of Dingle Bay and the mountainous Blasket Islands. You’ll have to drive a little out of your way to get to Dingle Golf Links, but you’ll find an open, links layout that feels like it’s been around for hundreds of years—though it was only built in the 1970s.

Like we said, the golf in this region needs no introduction. Trips to Killarney, Shannon and Cork should all include:

Ballybunion

Adare Manor

North West Ireland

Perhaps Ireland’s most underrated region for golf, the Emerald Isle’s dramatic northwest coast is home to numerous hidden gems that stand up with the country’s best.

Enniscrone Golf Club

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/Enniscrone Sunset 1-8.jpg

Enniscrone boasts 27 links holes perched on a peninsula on the Wild Atlantic Way. Towering dunes line many holes and create a stunning setting on the aptly named Dunes course, which features dramatic undulations and scenic vistas.

Carne Golf Links

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/CarneMay2018-101.jpg

Hardly any land was moved in creating Carne, resulting in tees and greens nestled among the dramatic sand-covered dunes that resemble the lunar landscape. A third nine was built in 2013 on the most dramatic part of the property and is incorporated into the original design on every second day.

Donegal Golf Club

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/DonegalSept2017-9.jpg

Situated on the tip of Murvagh peninsula, Donegal draws comparisons to Muirfield for its distinctive layout that runs in two large loops. Unlike many courses along Ireland’s rugged northwest coast, Donegal is relatively flat and presents subtle undulations and strategic bunkering.

County Sligo Golf Club

The 27 holes at County Sligo offer intriguing variety with dramatic elevation changes, forced carries and meandering burns. Several elevated tees provide scenic panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding mountains.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Links

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/New 14th Green, 15th Hole & 16th Tee.JPG

Gil Hanse and his design partner Jim Wagner recently renovated this rustic layout, bringing to life the natural features that make this seaside links compelling. The revitalized Narin & Portnoo offers a blend of tight doglegs and generous fairways, with soaring dunes, raised greens and natural bunkering present throughout.

Rosapenna Golf Resort

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/St Patrick's Links - Hole 2 - 1 - August 11, 2020.jpg

Three hidden gems await at Rosapenna , located in the very north of Ireland, including the Old Tom Morris Links (designed by its namesake in 1893) and the Tom Doak-designed St. Patrick’s Links, which opened in 2021.

Ballyliffin Golf Club

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/additions/Balliliffin May 2019 HR-61.jpg

Ballyliffin is Ireland’s northernmost golf club and, with two championship links courses, is widely regarded as the country’s finest 36-hole facility. The Glashedy Links , the younger (and longer) of the two courses, hosted the 2018 Irish Open, won by Scotland’s Russell Knox.

Strandhill Golf Club

Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Knocknarea Mountain with views of both, Strandhill plays just 6,350 yards from the tips but challenges golfers with imposing dunes and intriguing green complexes.

Northern Ireland

Anytime Golf Digest does a survey of bucket-list destinations, Northern Ireland is near the top of the list. And for good reason: The stunning visuals and topography (in addition to other sights to see, ala touring the Game of Thrones sites) create dramatic golf that competes with the best in the world.

In fact, the actual best course in the world, Royal County Down , can be found here. Though it’s private, travelers can inquire about getting on— click here for more information.

Of course, you must also attempt to play Royal Portrush ’s Dunluce course , which was eighth in our latest World 100 Greatest rankings, and hosted the 2019 Open Championship after the game’s oldest championship returned to Northern Ireland for the first time in 68 years. Don’t forget the Valley course as well.

Here are the other courses we’d build around:

Castlerock Golf Club (below), ranked fourth on Golf Digest’s most recent Best in Northern Ireland rankings , was altered by Harry Colt in the 1920s, cementing its places among the best links courses in the land.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/5/golfbreaks-ireland/Castlerock 2019 LR-7.jpg

Ardglass Golf Club is just down the road from Royal County Down, making it the perfect complementary loop. The back nine is splendid, all along the water with some dramatic topography. Take a breeze through the clubhouse, believed to be the oldest in the world, with part of the building dating back to 1405.

Portstewart would not make any ‘hidden gems’ list among avid architecture fans, but it can get lost in the shuffle with the amazing golf in Ireland. Ranked on Golf Digest’s most recent World 100 rankings, the Strand course .

We’ll let Golf Digest equipment editor Mike Stachura, as avid of a travel/design buff as you’ll find, describe the setting: “The first tee at the Strand is set on high dunes, like you’re surveying the kingdom, with beach and waves down to your right and all of County Antrim in front. It’s no wonder the television series 'Game of Thrones' has used the nearby land as scene-stealers.”

Thus why Northern Ireland sits at the top of nearly every traveling golfer’s bucket list.
