sea trip - Top 10 Things To Do in Tolo (Peloponnese, Greece)

Tolo is surrounded from the sea by the picturesque islands of Coronissi, Dascalio and Romvi, which give this place an additional charm. One of them has well preserved ruins of an ancient fortress built during the Byzantine times.

The most active and curious can rent a motorboat, kayak or catamaran and take a fascinating sea trip to these islands. During our stay, we visited Dascalio island. Guys, I could stay here all day! So clear and azure waters. By the way, we even had a BBQ lunch on the beach, organized by our hosts! Be sure to visit the small church on top of the island with breathtaking views.

We got to the island by motorboat and team of www.introdive.gr with small stops for swimming. We just couldn’t resist the temptation to have a dip in the sea! On the way back we enjoyed a sailing boat with www.tolosailing.gr and I was even a captain …. though only for a few minutes xoxo. Both experiences were amazing! I even don’t know which one I prefer more.

  • Acrogiali Seafood Restaurant . I have been to this tavern many times, this is one of my favorite food spots in Tolo. The tavern is located right on the edge of the sea, which gives it more charm. What to try : appetizers, salads, and main courses all with seafood.
  • Ormos Tavern . Located next to Acrogiali Restaurant. Attentive and polite staff, homemade dishes. What to try : tomato fried balls, green salad, and braised octopus.
  • Golden Beach Restaurant . The restaurant located in the hotel and has delicious not only seafood but also meat dishes. What to try: eggplant appetizer, green salad, grilled fresh shrimps, and local beer.

Nafplio is a charming little town with a picturesque promenade, old stone houses, squares, and streets full of life. Did you know that Nafplio was the first capital of Greece? Α visit card of Nafplio is a stone castle, which is located on a rocky hill high above the town, as well as a small round fortress Bourtzi, built on an island in the center of the harbor.

The special charm of Nafplio is largely associated with the stay of the Venetians, which left an imprint on the appearance of today’s center. Thanks to their efforts, the city acquired a very special look and harmoniously blended into the surrounding nature.

Be sure to visit the famous Italian ice cream shop Retro Latteria during your visit to Nafplio.

#7 Visit the main archaeological sites of Greece – Mycenae & Epidavros.

Tolo has a great location to visit famous ancient sites such as Mycenae and Epidauros. This summer I was impressed to see these places so empty because usually, you can find crowds of tourists here.

mycenae - Top 10 Things To Do in Tolo (Peloponnese, Greece)

Mycenae is one of the most famous and impressive archaeological sites of the Bronze Age, located in the Peloponnese. The name Mycenae is associated with the most famous Greek myths that have come down to us through the epic of Homer and other great tragedies of antiquity. According to legend, Mycenae was founded by Perseus, the son of Zeus and Danae. Visitors to Mycenae can visit the unique mine and domed tombs discovered by the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in 1876, as well as discover the famous Mycenaean palace and the ruins of the city walls.

The Catholicon of the monastery dates from around the middle of the 12th century and from 1875 was dedicated to Zoodochos Pighi, literally, “the source of life”. It is one of the most important churches of the middle Byzantine period and is in excellent condition.

The church is mainly of architectural interest, as the original paintings and decorations have not survived. The architectural type of the church is a four-column cross in a square with a dome. We visited the monastery on Sunday during the service which I recommend you attend.

This time we stayed in an amazing hotel – the Paradise Lost , only 100m from the beach. It is truly a paradise with rooms overlooking the sea, a large pool surrounded by palm trees and a small pool bar with modern music.

Demetris and I had a Junior Suite on the third floor and we enjoyed it a lot. Our room was tastefully furnished with a well-equipped bathroom. We had slippers, bathrobes, kettle with complimentary tea and coffee, and good internet.

The breakfast at the hotel was quite varied and the hotel staff was friendly and helpful. You will never believe that this hotel is only 2 *, it deserves at least 4 *.

Tolo, Greece – A Complete Travel Guide

Tolo, Greece is at the heart of one of the most storied provinces of Greece. On a recent trip to beautiful Tolo, in the Argolid, we explored some of the most exciting sights in Greece. The landscape and the food of the northern Peloponnese are also spectacular.

Table of Contents

Where is Tolo, Greece

Tolo, Greece – population 2500 in summer – is that idyllic beach town you’ve been dreaming about. With the soul of simple fishing village, Tolo (Tolon) is at the heart of a culturally rich region of Greece – full of archaeological sites and natural treasures.

Tolo is located south of Athens, on the eastern coast of the Peloponnese, in Argolis (Argolida). This is one of the most interesting regions of Greece, culturally and historically. Tolo is also an excellent place for family holidays – in the middle of a wealth of sights and activities. The Tolo beaches are beautiful, and there are little islands to boat out to -perfect for both relaxation and water sports. This spot in the Peloponnese is also a great jumping off point for exploring other gorgeous destinations. Glamorous Porto Heli is a little over an hour away. From there, the islands of the Saronic Gulf, like the elite island of Spetses and ultra-cultured Hydra are a very short ride away.

Tolo is also very close to historic and charming Nafplio – it’s just a 15 minute drive. This is also the perfect place to stay if you want to visit some of the most historic and impressive sights of Ancient Greece. The Asklepion and the ancient theater of Epidaurus are a half an hour to the northwest from Tolon. The archaeological site of Mycenae (Mykines) is also just half an hour from Tolo, to the north.

Our Travel Bloggers Greece visit to Tolo was an ideal introduction to the region. After the initial lockdown of 2020, we were very interested to see what the future of Greece travel would hold. We were delighted with the professionalism and dedicated to responsible, safe tourism that we met with in Tolo.

Tolo is part of the Municipality of Nafplion.

How to Get to Tolo, Argolida

The Argolid begins after crossing the Canal of Corinth, en route to Tolo

Tolo is in the northeastern corner of the Peloponnese, on the Argolic Gulf. It’s an easy distance from Athens. On a drive of less than two hours, you’ll see some lovely sights. The road hugs the shores of the Saronic gulf for the first half of the ride. You then reach the Isthmus of Corinth and the Corinth Canal (captured here by Tzina of Love for Travel ), dividing the Peloponnese from the Attica peninsula.

It’s also very easy to reach Tolon by bus. There are many KTEL public buses every day that connect Athens with Tolo. You can see schedules here.

The Isthmus of Corinth and the Corinth Canal

The isthmus of Corinth is a narrow neck of land dividing the Peloponnese from the Attica peninsula. It was also a landmark in the ancient world. An ancient stele marked the division between Attica and the Peloponnese. The 2nd century AD philosopher and biographer Plutarch attributed the stele to Theseus, son of King Aegeus of Athens. Plutarch said Theseus had placed the stele there on his journey to Athens.

The ancient Greeks had long thought of a canal to avoid the long trip around the Peloponnese, but they were never successful. Near the present day canal is an ancient stone pathway – the Diolkos. This was used for dragging ships overland from the Saronic Gulf to the Gulf of Corinth. The Canal of Corinth was finally dug at the end of the 19th century (1893). The Corinth Canal is a dramatic sight. It’s 6.4 kilometers long, and extremely deep and narrow (just 21 meters wide).

The Corinth Canal makes an interesting stop on the journey to Tolo from Athens. Huge ships cannot pass, but you will usually see pleasure vessels and smaller craft making the crossing far below the narrow bridge that crosses it.

The Bay of Tolo (Tolon)

The Bay of Tolo, Greece, at dawn

The Bay of Tolo, Greece is part of the Argolic Gulf. Tolo bay is enclosed, with calm waters. There are views of the close small island of Romvi and the even closer enchanting Koronisi, with its chapel. It’s lit up at night beautifully.

The Bay of Tolo has shallow calm seas, and a very long and narrow sand beach. Many small boats are anchored just offshore and fill the bay with charm.

The shore is dotted with charming traditional fish tavernas, with their tables right in the sand at the water’s edge.

Things to Do in Tolo, Greece

So close to Athens, but with all the charm of a quiet beach side town far from the cares of the world, Tolo is close to many significant archaeological sites and cultural destinations. Tolo itself also offers plenty of things to do, starting of course with the great sandy beaches of Tolo

Tolo Beaches

The bay of Tolo faces southwest into the larger Saronic gulf. Enclosed and protected, the beaches of Tolo offer some excellent swimming and lounging.

Psili Ammos Beach, Tolo

The northern section for the main beach that runs all along the coast of Tolo bay is the widest. It’s called “Psili Ammos” – fine sand. This silky, sandy beach was awarded a Blue Flag for the excellence of its waters, its condition and cleanliness, and its commitment to the environment. It’s one of five beaches in Argolis awarded with a blue flag – four of which, like Tolo, are in the Municipality of Nafplio.

The rest of the long beach of Tolo is clean and shallow. Because it’s in an enclosed bay, the waters are often calm. Tolo beach is a terrific family swimming beach, a three-minute walk from many hotels. Since it’s a town beach, you’ll be able to find anything you need within easy reach, from sunscreen to fried Calamari. There are a few quiet beach side cafes with sun loungers and umbrellas. But there were no loud beach bars to disturb the lazy tranquility of an ideal beach afternoon.

Kastraki Beach – Paralia Assinis

Just to the east, in its own little cove, is the more secluded Kastraki beach. The beach is half sandy, and half pebbles, with very clear waters. There’s a little taverna on the beach, and a few sun loungers and straw umbrellas. You can reach Kastraki beach on foot easily, but note that the road has no shoulder so you must be careful and also not make the trip on foot after dusk. This is also called Assini Beach, as its right below the ruins of Ancient Assini.

Plaka Beach (Drepano Beach)

A little more to the east – past the cape of Ancient Assini – there is a long stretch of beach. This is called Plaka or Drepano Beach, as it’s right by the small village of Drepano. The beaches are quiet and have more locals and Athenians than tourists. You’ll find some small family tavernas and a few sun loungers. There’s a campground by the beach.

Vivari Beach

Just 7 kilometers east of Tolo is a magical little bay. It’s almost completely enclosed, like a lagoon. With a few trees for natural shade, and a few sunbeds for relaxing, this is a little paradise. If you walk a little, there are one or two little ocves for even more seclusion. Locals enjoy the beachside tavernas here.

Kondyli Beach (Kontili Beach)

Further east – 10 km from Tolo and 3 km from Vivari, is the longer and somewhat more crowded Kondyli beach. Kondyli beach is in the southeastern curve of the bay. The southern edge of the beach is said to be nudism-friendly. The northern edge of the beach has beep waters.

Karathonas Beach

To the west of Tolo, in the direction of Nafplion, is Karathonas beach. It’s very close by boat, but about 20 minutes by bar as the road goes inland. This large beach offers watersports, beach bars with sunbeds and umbrellas, and tavernas – perfect for a sociable day at the beach.

The Islands of Tolo – Daskaleio, Romvi, and Koronisi

There are three little islands in the Bay of Tolo. They make wonderful destinations for day trip excursion by sea.

Koronisi Island, Tolo

Koronisi is the tiny island directly across from the port of Tolo. This charming green island has a small church – Agioi Apostoli – Holy Apostles. It’s a popular place for weddings and baptisms, and a wonderful sight in the sunset.

Romvi Island

The larger island of Romvi is just to the south. This more mountainous island is shaped like a boomerang, concealing the smaller Daskaleio island in its own private bay.

Daskaleio Island

The tiny island of Daskaleio has a secret. Hidden from view from the mainland by the larger Romvi island, this was the site of a “secret school” (“Daskalo” means ‘teacher’ in Greek). During the Ottoman occupation of Greece, there were many secret schools set up in remote locations, where children could have religious instruction and learn Greek language and history, preserving their heritage.

The secret school on Daskaleio was in the beautiful monastery of Zoodochou Pigi – ‘Life Giving Spring’ – built in 1688. You can hike up to the church on a day trip to the island. The views of the gulf are marvelous.

Daskaleio island and Romvu island ofer great secluded Tolo Beach experiences.

Take a Cruise to Daskaleio Island by Romvi

A Sailing Cruise around the Bay of Tolo, Argolida with Tolo Sailing

You know that fantasy of jumping off of a sailboat into deep jade-green sea in a secluded cove? The tiny island of Daskaleio, by Romvi, is the place where you can do that. This is one of the uninhabited islands in the snug Bay of Tolo. We reached it on a cruise with Tolo Sailing , while others of our group came with Intro Dive – like it sounds, they also give great first-time diving experiences. This is a great opportunity to try some water sports in a stunning location.

While on Romvi, we swam, hiked up to a beautiful and silent church, swam some more, and had an excellent barbecue. Our hosts at the John and George Hotel arranged the experience for us. They regularly arrange such excursions for their guests. At a cost of €25 – €30, including a fabulous lunch, it’s definitely one of the best things to do while you’re staying in Tolo.

Visit Ancient Assini

Assini has reached immortality both in history and in literature, in the poem “The King of Assini” by the Nobel Prize winning poet Giorgos Seferis .

Agia Kyriaki

At a perfect spot on the hill beside Ancient Assini, the Church of Agia Kyriaki is pristine blue and white overlooks Tolo Bay and the islands. This is a popular location for weddings and baptisms.

Historic Sights for Day Trips around Tolo, Greece

The Acropolis of Ancient Mycenae

Argolida is rich in history and archaeology. Tolo is near some of the most fascinating sights of both Ancient Greece and – even earlier – Mycenaen Greece. This is the Greece of our collective imagination – the Greece of Homer, of Agamemnon, and of ships bound for Troy . It’s also the home of one of the greatest theaters of Classical Greece, where the works of Aeschylus and Aristophanes still play, and of one of the most famous healing centers of the Ancient World .

The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus

Near Tolo, Greece - The steps of the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, Argolida

The Theater of Epidaurus is one of the world’s most famous theaters as well as one of the most significant archaeological sights in Greece. This vast theater – with a capacity of about 13,000 viewers – is famous for its acoustics. Even from the lofty top rows, the words on center stage resonate.

For the best experience, visit the Archaeological sight by day to wonder at its construction and beauty. Then come again to see a show – an ancient drama or comedy.

The Theater of Epidaurus was part of the healing center – the Asklepion. The performances here were not conceived of as entertainment but as an integral part of the patients’ well-being, spiritual and psychological health.

The Asklepion of Epidaurus

Asklepius, son of Apollo, was the Ancient Greek god of healing. His staff, entwined with a snake, remains to day a universal symbol of healing.

In the world of Ancient Greece, healing centers took his name – Asklepion. There were many, and the one at Epidaurus was the most famous of them all. This was the mythological birthplace of Asklepius. The Asklepion at Epidaurus was one of the most significant cult sites of Ancient Greece. This vast archaeological complex includes the ruins of the great Doric temple to Aesclepius, the Tholon – dedicated to his cult, the Abaton – or Enkymmytron – where patients slept for Asklepius to come to them in their dreams, a stadium for athletic competition, the hestiatorion, library, baths, and many other structures.

The Museum at Ancient Epidaurus

Ancient Medical Instruments Found in the Excavation of the Asklepion, Argolida, near Tolo, Greece

A visit to the on-site museum at Ancient Epidaurus will give added insight into this tremendous ancient healing center. The museum displays fascinating findings from the site. Among these are medical instruments and surgical tools, evidence of the extraordinarily advanced care patient could receive at the Asklepion of Epidaurus.

Ancient Mycenae

The Treasury of Atreus from within - Ancient Mycenae, Argolida

Ancient Mycenae has been capturing the imagination of scholars, travels, and poets for centuries. The amateur archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann was famously convinced that in the Homeric epics there was history and truth, and he found it. At Mycenae, Archaeology and Myth collide, as Schliemann’s findings confirmed a synergy with Homer’s tale. At any rate, standing in the Treasury of Atreus, the famous beehive tomb, it is easy too believe you are in the resting place of Agamemnon. The tomb of Clytemestra is also here, as well as the Lions Gate, the great acropolis, shaft graves, and astonishing Cyclopean walls all aound.

The Museum at Ancient Mycenae

A Replica of the "Mask of Agamemnon" at the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Mycenae, near Tolo, Greece

The Museum of Ancient Mycenae displays wonderful findings from the excavation. The objects are arranged in such a way as to support an understandable narrative, leading to a deeper understanding of Mycenaen culture. Highlights include figurines of religious idols, including Gaia the earth goddess, a magnificent fresco of two Mycenaen women and a Minoan woman, and elaborate jewelry. A highlight, of course, is a replica of what is famously called the “Mask of Agamemnon.” The original is in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

Where to Stay in Tolo

The Bay of Tolo, Argolida

There are many excellent family hotels in Tolo. Our Tolo hotel – the John and George Hotel – the finest among them, with very high guest ratings. We loved the sweeping views of Tolo Bay from our elegant room, and the spacious pool deck below, along with poolside breakfast. The service was exceptional.

Paradise Lost , Tolo is another fine Tolo hotel, with a gorgeous pool and tropical garden, and lovely views.

Our visit was one of the first after the lockdown. We stayed here with great peace of mind – all safety and hygiene standards were strictly maintained. There was sanitizer all over, plexiglass at the check-in, and all servers were wearing masks. We had masks and sanitizing wipes in our rooms. At breakfast, we had service at the buffet from wait staff who were wearing face shields, and everyone always maintained a careful distance.

Where to Dine in Tolo

In Tolo, Argolida, there is excellent seafood - grilled shrimp and crisp fried calamari

Tolo has excellent dining. Here on the shores of the clean Bay of Tolo, there’s a great variety of excellent fish and seafood. We had elegant and creative dishes as we overlooked the gulf: classic crisp fried fish and salads as we sat with our feet in the sand. We also enjoyed delicious grilled meats in the countryside. There are high-quality family-style tavernas on the shore. Our favorites were Ormos and Akrogiali . On the main street of the town overlooking the bay is Maria’s, and by the beach the excellent restaurant at the Golden Beach Hotel. The food everywhere was superb, including classic favorites and beautifully inventive dishes that were nonetheless true to their traditional roots. Here is a guide to the best restaurants in Tolo – we loved them all.

Tolo, Greece Weather

Greece is famous for exceptional weather. But even by those standards, Tolo and the surrounding region stand out, for mild winters of sunshine. Even the rainiest month – December – sees rain on just a dozen days. The heat of summer is tempered by sweet breezes.

Visiting Tolo, Greece

We found Tolo to be an ideal home base for exploring the Argolid, one of the most fascinating and beautiful provinces of Greece.

Tolo is a charming fishing village located in the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece that belongs to the regional unit of Argolis or Argolida. But all you need to know for starters, is that Tolo is an ideal holiday spot, right by the coast, with beautiful sandy beaches, excellent dining and a range of activities, inlcuding historical and cultural sites for visitors. Tolo makes for a laid back and relaxing spot to spend a few days for solo travellers but it’s also an excellent family-friendly destination. Afterwards, it is ideally located for excursions to the Saronic Gulf and the nearby islands of Spetses and Hydra or further mainland explorations to nearby cities in the Peloponnese.

How to Get to Tolo

From Athens, Tolo is only 2 hours away. The drive is pleasant and mostly follows the new highway route. After leaving Athens, you will be awarded with views of Elefsina Bay and Salamina island, and you might also want to have a quick stop at the Isthmus of Corinth for photos. The Canal of Corinth was first proposed in classical times, but after some failed attempts at construction, it was completed in 1983. The narrow 8-meter-long passage that was carved out, allows smaller vessels to pass through but it is also a popular bungee jumping spot.

  • If you want to have a quick photo-op stop here, make sure to exit the highway that goes to Loutraki.

If you are coming to Tolo by bus then you can book a ticket with the Greek KTEL system from Athens to Nafplio and then from Nafplio Tolo. Find more information here .

For the needs of our group we travelled by coach from Athens to Tolo with Zafiris Transfers and then private luxury mini vans provided by Tours & Transfers around Argolida.

Tolo Beaches & Islands

Being a coastal village, there is no surprise that Tolo has some great swimming options. the most famous of which is Tolo Beach, which starts from the area of Psili Ammos and stretches for more than 1 km until the port. You will find organized and unorganized sections with umbrellas and sunbeds available for hire. Tolo Beach is very popular in the summer, with visitors coming from nearby Nafplio to enjoy the cool and protected waters of the bay. Kastraki Beach

Kastraki beach is another excellent option nearby Tolo and very close to the acropolis of Ancient Assini. You will find it on Google Maps as Piccola Spagia di Assini, while it can also be spotted by the “Red Rock” bar one of the most romantic spots in the area for a drink overlooking the bay. Kastraki beach is great if you are looking to avoid the crowds.

Paralia Assinis

On the other side of the ancient ruins is a long stretch of land that is called Assini Beach or Plaka. Due to its size there are sandy, pebbly and rocky parts. This is one of the quietest spots in the area, and most people come from nearby hotels. There are not a lot of facilities but you will find a handful of tavernas.

Koronisi, Romvi and Daskalio Islands

For a truly secluded swimming spot, Tolo offers three stunning islands with picturesque coves and turquoise waters.

In addition to swimming and enjoying a day out on the water, you might also spot remains of medieval buildings. The history of the islands actually goes much further back, to ancient times with findings from at least the 6th and 7th century AD.

Sailing & Diving in Tolo

Here is a tough question, sail boat or speedboat? What about both?

You can start with a day cruise at the safe hands of Tolo Sailing , and make your way towards Romvi and Daskalio island. The latter is where we anchored for the afternoon for a swim and a much-needed BBQ on the beach. If you are after a more full on day, the team at Tolo Sailing has more suggestions for you though, like a journey towards Platia and Psili island where you can meet gulls, cormorants and maybe even dolphins! Alternatively, you can also explore the treasures of the islands from below! Tolo is a great diving spot with plenty of caves to discover and stories of shipwrecks and submerged villages. Intro Dive offer both introductory Open Water Courses and Divemaster courses for more experienced scuba divers.

For some different kind of fun on the water, you might also want to check out Tolo Water Sports , that offer a wide range of activities from water ski lessons to kite surfing.

Explore Historical & Cultural Sites in Tolo

Ancient assini.

Ancient Assini is located high on the rock of Kastraki, very close to two beautiful beaches, and was brought to light during excavations in 1920 first by French archaeologists and later on by a Swedish team led by Axel W. Persson. This is a modern and newly established archaeological site that both the local community and archaeologists worked on together to make as accessible and educational as possible. In the area you will find a botanical garden, an excavation space where children get to practice being archaeologists for the day, as well as a collection of photographs from the Georgios Seferis archive with a poem that was written for the King of Asine. A less well known fact is the role of Tolo during WW II and the presence of the ANZAC (Australian New Zealand Army Corps) in the area. You can visit a small cave at the top to read more about that period and the battle of Assine in Tolo on the 27th of April 1941.

Monastery of Agia Moni (Zoodochos Pigi)

Only 10 km away from Tolo and at a driving distance of 15 minutes you will find the monastery of Agia Moni also known as Zoodochos Pigi which translates to “source of life”. The water spring in the chapel has mythological and religious significance with the first mention of the spring believed to be in the 2nd century AD by Pausanias. On the grounds you will find the beautiful church, and small chapels as well as the living quarters as this is an active monastic community and nunnery. The oldest parts of the church date back to the 12th century.

Church of Agia Kyriaki

The beautiful blue and white church of Saint Kyriaki is bulit on a hill and without a doubt has the best view of the area around and below. From here, you can even spot Romvi and Karonisi islands across the bay.

As one can imagine this is quite the spot to get married in. You get a peaceful and magical setting, Cycladic Island vibes, and it’s only a five-minute drive down to waterfront and the best seafood tavernas.

Tastings & Local Experiences in Tolo

Of course, you can’t leave Tolo without tasting the local produce or learning more about what the area offers. Here are just a few of the things you can look forward to.

Ouzo Karonis

A family run distillery that has been operating almost as long as the modern Greek state has existed. The Karonis Ouzo distillery is only a 20-minute drive from Tolo so there is no excuse to miss it. Here you can learn more about the process and production of ouzo, one of the most important Greek drinks and try the original recipe with its 145 years of history. To get the best results you need to use the traditional method of “apostaxi” that does not alter the flavour or use additives and high quality water from the region. Try not to be the designated sober driver so you can try the local tsipouro as well as the cherry and lemon liqueur (a different kind of limoncello).

Melas Epidaurus Olive Oil

On your way to the archaeological site of Epidavros, you will find the Melas Olive Oil Domain . With more than 1.5 million olive trees in the area, this “liquid gold” as Homer once said is one of the most prized exports of the region. The modern olive oil production process is a complicated and serious affair, that combines the latest technology and expert knowledge of the producers to achieve taste, quality and nutritional benefits.

Beekeeping and Honey Tasting

Bee-keeper or astronaut? To learn more about honey bee farming and taste local honey we visited the bee hives of Mr Dimitris Kontomourtos, a second generation bee-keeper that welcomed us with his father to tell us more about the process. Adults and children alike loved this activity, even if the heat made it hard to walk around our space suits. From getting to see a Queen B to tasting local orange tree honey, this was an experience I will not forget any time soon. * More information by contacting Tolo.gr here .

Nearby Escapes From Tolo

Tolo is a great base if you are looking at exploring the whole region of Argolis or Argolida. There are plenty of notable cities and historical sites in the area.

Nafplio is a vibrant city with strong influences from the Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans creating a kaleidoscope of history and culture. It is also one of the most charming and Instagrammable towns in Greece. In addition to being the first capital of Greece (1827) it boasts the first pharmacy, first hospital for the poor and the setting of the first political assassination and first Greek Parliament. It is impossible not to love the cobbled alleyways and charming waterfront that create an intimate and romantic setting. Inhabited since ancient times, the peninsula that Nafplion is located on was an important strategic harbour. Oh, and don’t forget to have ice-cream at Gelateria di Piazza!

Epidavros & Mycenae

Two massively important archaegolocial sites that are less than an hour away from Tolo are the sanctuary of Asclepius and Ancient Theatre of Epidavros and the archaeological site of Mycenae which is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. While the theatre of Epidavros often steals the spotlight with its summer long festival hosting international performances, operas and ancient tragedies, the area of Epidavros was actually a hugely important healing centre where people would travel to from all over for rest, relaxation and to be cured. The kingdom of Mycenae is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and one of the richest, as it was practically covered in gold. The site dates back to the 7th millennium BC but very little remains of that time, as it was continuously inhabited. The monuments that are still visible today were build sometime during 1350 and 1200 BC during the Late Bronze Age. The Lion Gate and Atreus’ Treasure are both simply breathtaking and must see pieces of archaic power.  I would highly recommend you book an experienced tour guide for both archaeological sites to fully appreciate their history and importance.

Due to recent COVID-19 regulations our tour guide supplied us with microphones that we got to wear and walk around the area while still listening to her, in order to allow for social distancing.

Where to Eat in Tolo

Tolo is a well known spot for fresh fish and seafood. All the establishments I visited were excellent in quality and I would happily recommend to visitors to the area.

Taverna Akrogiali

Established in 1955, Taverna Akrogiali is one of the oldest and most well known in the area. Our late night dinner here on the first night of our stay was a treat for all, with our table located only a few meters away from the water and or toes deep in the sand. Fresh fish and a great selection of local dishes, including sesame coated saganaki cheese, and oven roasted eggplants with tomato.

Golden Beach Restaurant

This restaurant is part of Golden Beach Hotel , that you can spot just as you enter the village, opposite the stunning sandy beach of Tolo. I had excellent fresh calamari (a classic Greek summer dish) and enjoyed fresh salads, an excellent spicy cheese dip and local pasta with shrimp. The spacious veranda under the shade has plenty of space for larger groups and you don’t have to travel far from the beach to enjoy!

Maria’s Restaurant

A classy and modern establishment in the centre of the village, with an unbeatable view of Koronisi island from the veranda. I loved the pasta with clams, prawn spaghetti and anchovy appetizers but it was the inventive and mouthwatering salads bursting with flavour and texture that stole the show.

Pick a table with a view of the water for a romantic setting like no other!

Maria's Restaurant

Ormos is an all day cafe-restaurant right on the beach, with a beautiful view of the bay and a friendly relaxed atmosphere. It was passion and love for food and the area of Tolo that led Anna and Vaggelis to start Ormos, where visitors are treated to classic and freshly made Greek dishes every day. Start with a leisurely brunch and a smoothie and stay for the special of the day to watch the sun dive over the islands.

Where to Stay in Tolo

Paradise lost.

Paradise Lost is a solo traveller friendly tropical paradise at the heart of Tolo. Palm and banana trees provide shade around the massive pool with a great pool bar for relaxing summer nights. My room at the top floor was recently refurbished with modern decor and offered great views over the gulf and islands in the bay.

*I visited Paradise Lost just after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted for travellers in Greece and found it compliant with all regulations. Single use plastic covers were used for remote controls and towels. Antiseptic gel was available throughout and there were screening measures in place for staff and visitors.

Paradise Lost Hotel View

John and George Hotel

The largest hotel in the area where membe rs of our group stayed at. The hotel rooms of John and George were found to be modern and spacious, with great views over the two islands and the pool area below. In total there are 58 rooms and 4 apartments great for larger groups or families, a second kid friendly pool and friendly and welcoming staff.

Souvenirs & Things To Buy

Looking for small gifts for friends and family or just for yourself? Here is what I would choose!

Beer only available in Tolo

Truly unique souvenirs are those you cannot buy anywhere else! This is the case with the local beer Toliani. With water from the mountain peaks of Erymanthos in the Peloponnese this pilsner style beer is only available to buy in restaurants around the area. Don’t miss out!

Citrus products

Did you know that the region of Argolida that Tolo is a part of is responsible for 60-70% of the citrus production around the country?

From oranges, to mandarins, lemons and grapefruits, try to taste at least a few.

I loved the orange marmalade by Mastos , a local company that specializes in spoon sweets, jams and marmalades.

Olive Wood Souvenirs

At Olive Tree Boutique Tolo , you will find a variety of unique and handmade items from olive wood like bottle openers or candleholders. If you have more space in your luggage you might want to have a look at their cutting boards as well!

Olive Oil and Olive soap

With so much olive oil flowing around there is no better place to get some olive oil soap or lotions!

Ouzo or Local Lemon Liquor

The Karonis Ouzo Distillery is a great place to stock up on ouzo, tsipouro or some local lemon liqueur.

A Guide to Tolo, Greece

places to visit near tolo greece

Tolo is a tiny fishing village turned tourist hot spot on the Peloponnese peninsula. It has a history dating back to the Homeric times and has always been a safe harbor for ships, even acting as an auxiliary port to Nafplio and a later port for the Venetians in the war against the Ottomans.

The current, modern town was founded as a refugee settlement for refugees from Crete following the Greek Revolution, who grew the city into a fishing village and tourist town. Tolo has a long, gorgeous beach perfect for water sports, swimming, and fishing, and a lively fun town with tavernas and bars. It makes a perfect holiday spot for families.

A guide to the best things to do in tolo, greece, where is tolo .

Tolo is located on the Peloponnese peninsula, in the Argolida region, southwest of Athens. The Peloponnese is linked to the Greek mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth, a tiny strip of land. Much of the Peloponnese is the same as it was in antiquity — rugged mountains, tiny villages at the coastline, and hospitable locals. Many of the regions in the Peloponnese follow the same boundaries as back then too.

The Argolida is easily accessible from Athens, with a plethora of historical sites and charming villages, and is famous for its citrus groves. The Argolid was the heart of Greece from 1600 to 1110 BC under the Mycenaeans, when it passed to Dorian control with the fall of the Mycenaeans, and later to the Romans. Nearby archaeological sites include Epidaurus, Asine, Tiryns, Mycenae, and Argos.

How to get to Tolo from Athens

Tolo is not far from Athens, only about 2 hours driving time.

The best way to get there is to hire a car, as driving outside of Athens is reasonably easy and the roads between Athens and the Peloponnese are good. There are road signs the entire way. If you are not comfortable driving, but like the freedom and ease of a car, you can arrange a private transfer with your hotel or hire a driver.

For travelers on a budget, you can take the public bus (KTEL) from Athens to Nafplio, then change for the bus to Tolo. Both buses operate on the hour, from early morning to early evening. If you take a taxi from Nafplio to Tolo, instead of the second bus, expect to pay around 15€.

The archaeological evidence from nearby towns also indicates that the citadel had close ties with islands in the Aegean, including Cyprus and Crete.

The site was first excavated in the 1920s by a Swedish archaeological team and in the 70s by a Greek research team. The archaeological site of Asklepios and its famous Theatre of Epidaurus are two of the Peloponnese’s best archaeological sites. The sanctuary of Asklepios is dedicated to Asclepius, the son of Apollo, and the god of medicine. Mycenae is another famous archaeological site just steps from Tolo. It is most well known as the home to the Mycenaean civilization, which dominated much of southern Greece – including Crete and Anatolia – in the 2nd millennium BCE. Its peak was in 1350 BCE when the settlement had a population of 30,000. Mycenae, as a settlement, is known for the Lion’s Gate, which was the main entrance of the Bronze Age citadel and is the sole surviving piece of Mycenaean sculpture.

11. Visit Ancient Olympia

Ancient Olympia is near the modern town of the same name and was known in Antiquity as the center of the Ancient Olympic Games and as an important Panhellenic sanctuary. It was dedicated to Zeus and attracted Greeks from all over.

Unlike other ancient sanctuaries, Olympia extended beyond its boundaries, especially the parts that hosted the games. The ruins that can be seen today include the temples dedicated to Zeus and Hera, and the Pelopian, or a tomb turned altar for animal sacrifices. The site also highlights both the modern and ancient games, in two museums that share stories and history.

Why We Chose Tolo, Greece

places to visit near tolo greece

First, we want to give a brief explanation of why we chose Tolo, Greece, as our base for our 25-day trip to Greece.

Serge started researching places where we could not only stay during the trip but also:

  • work a bit in our Travel Blogs;
  • leave our main luggage while we traveled to other places in Greece;
  • discover unique and less-touristy spots;
  • relax and enjoy beautiful views without spending too much on restaurants and other activities.

That’s when Tolo came up in our research.

Despite talking to Greeks from Athens, Santorini, and other places we visited, few knew about Tolo, which we found fascinating. We were discovering and talking about Tolo for them.

We also met a really friendly local in Athens who told us that Tolo Village is one of the main destinations for locals during summer vacation. This meant we achieved our goal of choosing a local destination to discover.

For all the reasons above, Tolo offered almost everything we were looking for, including an affordable apartment as our base.

This small village boasts beautiful views and a charming beach. So, we decided to make Tolo our home base.

How to Get to Tolo, Greece from Athens

places to visit near tolo greece

To get to Tolo, Greece, we highly recommend renting a car , just as we did from Discovering Destinations. We rented a car in Athens airport and drove to Tolo, which is about a 2-hour drive.

Since our trip was in June, not peak season, traffic was manageable. However, we believe that even during summer, when Tolo is a popular destination for locals, the traffic shouldn’t be too bad. It’s always best to check Google Maps for current conditions.

Where to stay in Tolo, Greece

places to visit near tolo greece

One reason we chose Tolo for our stay in Greece was its proximity to Athens and the affordable apartment prices for a 25-day stay compared to other cities.

Apartments we recommend in Tolo – Greece

  • Anastasia Luxury Suites II Apartment

places to visit near tolo greece

Instead of hotels, we opted for a small apartment with a kitchen to save on some meals like breakfast. We found a perfect spot on Airbnb and highly recommend Anastasia Luxury Suites II apartment. Although we aren’t affiliated with Airbnb , we genuinely loved this cozy studio hosted by Konstantinos. He was very quick to reply to our questions about the place.

Despite the apartments being named ‘luxury,’ which sounds expensive, we got a really good deal for 25 days in June. Just a quick reminder that prices go up during the summer European vacation season.

Here it’s Why We Loved Anastasia Apartment:

  • Location: Just off the main road leading to Tolo village, with a balcony offering stunning views of Tolo, Koronisi Island, and the Argolic Gulf.
  • Spotlessly clean, modern, and tastefully decorated.
  • Fully equipped kitchen.
  • Comfortable bed and a cozy dining area.
  • Airy with large windows, making AC unnecessary.
  • Quiet at night, ensuring restful sleep.
  • Modern, clean bathroom with a fantastic shower.
  • The “Free parking” mentioned in Airbnb description is actually street parking behind the apartment. We always found a spot, but it could be harder during peak tourist season.
  • The apartment is on a steep hill, which can be challenging, especially with luggage or groceries.
  • Located on the second floor with no elevator, making it unsuitable for those with mobility issues.
  • Oasis Apartments

places to visit near tolo greece

Located just down the street from where we were staying, near Tolo’s main street and beach, we noticed the Oasis apartment . It has a great location and looks well-maintained and charming.

This family-friendly aparthotel is within easy reach of Tolo Beach and seems perfect for those with children who want to spend great days in Tolo, near the beach, with an area for them to play.

places to visit near tolo greece

John & George Hotel in Tolo Beach caught our eye as we walked through the village. We loved the pictures of the hotel and seriously considered booking a stay there. However, since we were staying in Tolo for 25 days, we preferred to have an apartment where we could leave our luggage when traveling around and cook a bit to lower our expenses.

John & George Hotel has excellent reviews on Google. Guests praise the stunning sea views, cleanliness, friendly and helpful staff, and the beautiful pool area.

The hotel’s location is ideal, close to Tolo Beach and various restaurants and shops. If you’re staying for a shorter period or prefer a hotel experience, we highly recommend checking out John & George Hotel on hotels.com , where you can see exactly which room you’ll be booking.

places to visit near tolo greece

We arrived in Tolo later afternoon, after a busy morning arriving in Athens, renting our car and driving to Tolo.

The first thing we remember doing as soon as we arrived in Tolo and got our stuff inside of the apartment was to walk to the beach.

This said, spend time at Tolo Beach is a great option anytime, can be just for a morning or later walk, but if you get great sunny days, just relax and enjoy the clear blue and transparent water, maybe getting a drink or something for eating in the many restaurants located just in front of the sand of tolo’s beach.

Tolo beach is known for their clear waters and sandy shores, and you will be amazed with the gorgeous views with the mountains around, including the small Island of Koronisi , which It is the third little island opposite the port of Tolo, Argolida.

According to the local website, on the island of Koronisi, there is a chapel of “Agioi Apostoloi” (Holy Apostles) , where weddings and baptisms are carried out for the romantic ones.

This bring us to our next tip about Koronisi island.

02. Rent a Kayak to Koronisi Island

places to visit near tolo greece

As we mentioned, Koronisi is a small Island that is a perfect ornament from Tolo beach and where you can already easily have a breathtaking view from.

According to the Photohound website , Koronisi is an uninhabited islet, which is the third and smallest island in Tolo (Greece) after Romvi and Daskalio. The islet is situated at a mere distance of about 560 meters from the coast, just opposite the village.

There is a small chapel dedicated to the Holy Apostles was built in 1830 at the top of the islet. The background view consists of the islets of Ypsili and Plateia. The island is not only an archaeological site but also a natural park with rich and rare fauna and flora.

Although we don’t know if you can visit the land and walk around the Island, we saw from our amazing balcony view people just taking a Kayak during morning to go around Koronisi Island. We got tempt to do it but at the end we had other priorities during the day to achieve, but if you are nature passion we are sure you will love it.

We believe you can easily rent a kayak visiting one of the many tours office located at the main street of Tolo or even in the beach, or visiting the website of Unlimited Adrelanine for further information.

You can also try your hand at paddleboarding, or snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters.

One of the best ways to experience Tolo Village is to spend some time walking along its main street, Μπουμπουλίνας . While we don’t know the exact translation, it’s easy to find since it’s the only street leading up to the beach where you’ll discover a variety of restaurants, shops, and cafes.

Take a leisurely stroll up and down Μπουμπουλίνας Street to soak in the local culture. Check out the variety of restaurants and shops, from souvenir stores to boutiques selling local crafts.

Must important , as you walk, take your time to admire the beautiful surroundings. The small streets branching off Μπουμπουλίνας often lead to the beach, providing stunning views of the Argolic Gulf.

Savor traditional Greek dishes at local tavernas. Don’t miss out on fresh seafood.

There are restaurants to fit all kinds of budgets, many offering stunning sea views.

Below, we suggest some of the restaurants we tried and we loved it:

Tolo, Greece – Dinner experience:

Mammann’s Grill:

places to visit near tolo greece

Mammann’s Grill offers simple but delicious options of traditional Greek food. It’s great for sandwiches, almost like Greek street food, as some people call it. We shared Saganaki cheese, a Greek salad, and YOGURTLOU KEBAP, which were generously portioned for the two of us. We ate really well on a small budget.

Maria’s Restaurant:

places to visit near tolo greece

Recommended by the blogger we mentioned earlier, Maria’s Restaurant boasts amazing sea views. We suggest reserving in advance to secure a table with a view. We enjoyed a Greek salad, seafood pasta, and various local cheeses recommended as appetizers. They offered complimentary desserts at the end. Maria’s was our most expensive dinner in Tolo, and while good, we believe you can find equally great food for less.

Fish Tavern Bikaki:

places to visit near tolo greece

Fish Tavern Bikaki is a simple yet excellent restaurant that offers both indoor seating and, weather permitting, sea views. We opted to dine indoors due to the weather. We ordered fish with vegetables and had the unique opportunity to choose our fish directly from the kitchen, where they cleaned and cooked it to our preference—a really cool experience. They also provided delicious complimentary desserts. It was a great meal at an affordable price.

Cafes & Bakery:

  • Klopatra’s Coffee & Pastry:

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Kleopatras-coffee-and-pastry-Tolo-Greece-Greece-Travel-Travel-Guide-Food-Discovering-Destinations-1024x282.jpg

Visit Kleopatra’s Coffee Shop in Tolo, Greece, for a cozy breakfast. This charming bakery offers delicious bread, pastries, and snacks. We loved the Peinirli Cheese Boat-shaped that is a kind of Greek pizza.

We also enjoyed a brewed coffee and some Greek pastries, but there are also options like delicious Greek yogurt with fruits, juices, and more. The friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere make it a must-visit spot.

  • Gelateria Athina:

places to visit near tolo greece

Tolo offers many delicious options for perfect ice cream or sorbet, and one we really liked was Gelateria Athina .

The owner was friendly and explained how he developed the flavors. We tried a couple of them and loved it. There’s also a patio with a partial sea view, making it a perfect spot to enjoy your ice cream.

05. Shopping – Main Street of Tolo, Greece

places to visit near tolo greece

While shopping is one of the things to do in Tolo, we highly recommend visiting the Olive Tree Boutique . This store offers local and high-quality products that make for perfect souvenirs.

They have a large selection of items made from olive wood, including dishes and other souvenirs. Their cosmetics and body care products are wonderful, especially their serums for the face and hair, which are perfect for restoring skin and hair after exposure to the sun and high temperatures.

Of course, you’ll love all the local stores around that sell gorgeous clothes, beautiful jewelry, lots of souvenirs, and more. Just try not to go overboard!

06. Discovering Local Finds in Tolo, Greece

places to visit near tolo greece

After exploring and shopping along the main street of Tolo, make sure to visit the local supermarkets if you’re looking for souvenirs, small gifts, or delicious groceries from Greek cuisine to bring back home. These local markets offer great products at much lower prices than in more touristy areas.

We found some fantastic souvenirs for less than 3 euros. Here are some products we recommend:

  • Ouzo, which is a dry anise-flavored aperitif that is widely consumed in  Greece ;
  • Greek spices;

07. Getting Lost in Tolo Village

places to visit near tolo greece

One of the activities we really enjoyed in Tolo, Greece was walking around the charming houses and buildings in Tolo Village.

Since our apartment was located uphill, we often walked down the street to reach the beach or the main street of Tolo, where most of the restaurants are located.

We frequently changed our route, passing by the local church, admiring beautifully decorated houses with flowers, and exploring the surroundings. We took lots of pictures along the way.

So, our tip is to simply get lost in the middle of Tolo Village and enjoy the walk. It’s a great way to discover hidden gems and experience the local charm of Tolo.

And if you have time, watch the sunset from the hilltop at St. Nicholas Church for stunning panoramic views.

The ancient city of Asine, known for its rich archaeological significance, dates back to the Bronze Age and was inhabited until the medieval period. The site also offers stunning views of the surrounding area, making it a perfect destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

09. Take a Day Cruise to Hydra and Spetses from Tolo

One of the coolest things to do in Tolo is to take a day cruise to the nearby islands of Hydra and Spetses. Unfortunately, we didn’t stay in Tolo long enough to experience it ourselves, as we were traveling around Greece. However, even our Airbnb host mentioned how beautiful these trips are.

As you walk along Tolo’s main street, you’ll find a couple of stores offering these day cruises. You can easily check out the available trips, including the schedules and prices. It’s a perfect way to explore more of Greece’s stunning islands while staying in Tolo. Don’t miss this opportunity for a memorable adventure!

10. Recommended Day Trips from Tolo

places to visit near tolo greece

Tolo is an amazing village perfect for relaxation, but there are also incredible places nearby to explore, relax, and visit. Taking a day tour from Tolo is great, but renting a car, as we did, will make your life easier and more fun.

We highly recommend taking some day trips from Tolo to explore historical sites, stunning beaches, and charming cities.

Day Trip Suggestions from Tolo

Nafplio (about 20 minutes driving distance from tolo).

Our favorite place to visit. We took several trips to this picturesque city with a rich history, stunning architecture, and beautiful beaches. Nafplio offers both a new city and a historic city, and we loved both! Stay tuned for our complete blog and vlog about Nafplio, with lots of tips on places to visit, where to eat, the best shops, and advice from locals who became our friends!

Argos (about 35 minutes driving distance from Tolo)

A delightful surprise for us, Argos was suggested by a local store owner in Nafplio. Known for its archaeological sites and ancient ruins, such as the Castle of Argos, which had free entry and offered gorgeous views with almost nobody there. You can also enjoy a fantastic meal and drinks.

Epidaurus (about 45 minutes driving distance from Tolo)

Famous for its ancient theater and the sanctuary of Asklepios, it’s a beautiful place to visit. You will find a mix of nature, history, and amazing views.

Mycenae (about 45 minutes driving distance from Tolo)

Explore the ancient ruins of this legendary city. When visiting Mycenae, try to visit the Tholos Tomb of Tiryns, a hidden gem amid orange tree plantations, which we found fascinating and is free of charge.

Paralia Karathonas Beach (23 minutes driving distance from Tolo)

We visited this beach after trying to visit Nafplio Castle. It was amazing—calm and almost empty, perfect for relaxing with your beach towels and enjoying the gorgeous views.

Ancient Corinth Archaeological Site and Museum (about 1 hour 20 minutes driving distance from Tolo)

Located on the northern foothills of Acrocorinth Hill, around the Archaic Temple of Apollo. It’s a bit further from Tolo, but totally doable in one day if you have a car. Alternatively, you can check in Tolo Village about trips to visit it and the Corinth Canal.

Methana (about 1 hour 30 minutes driving distance from Tolo)

A small town with volcanic hot springs and beautiful coastal views. Although we didn’t visit it, locals told us it’s a beautiful place, so if you have the chance, go for it.

These day trips offer a variety of experiences, from historical exploration to relaxing beach days, making your stay in Tolo even more memorable. Remember to always check Google Maps for traffic and accurate driving times. If you decide not to rent a car, you can find day trips from Tolo by visiting one of the many tour stores in Tolo Village.

If you’re in Athens, consider using GetYourGuide to explore Tolo and the Nafplio region. This way, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip with plenty of options to discover amazing places nearby.

11. Discover a Complete Olive Oil Tour at Melas Epidaurus Olive Oil Domain

places to visit near tolo greece

On the recommendation of Katerina from the blog Limitless Travelling , we booked a half-day morning tour at Melas Epidaurus Olive Oil Domain and loved it.

The tour was a comprehensive class on olive oil, conducted by Anastasia, who did a fantastic job.

Melas is an extroverted family business dealing with the production and standardization of extra virgin olive oil, based in Lygourio, next to the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus.

We enjoyed a delicious meal served with their best extra virgin olive oil and received a thorough explanation of the olive oil extraction process.

13. Essential Tips for Your Trip to Tolo, Greece: Answering Common Questions

Here are some essential tips to help you make the most of your visit and answer some of the most common questions travelers have.

The currency used in Tolo, as in the rest of Greece, is the Euro (€) .

Make sure to have some cash on hand for small purchases, as a few places don’t accept credit cards, though credit cards are widely accepted.

Packing List

places to visit near tolo greece

The packing list can vary depending on the time of year you visit Tolo, Greece. Based on our experience from early May to early June 2024 , the region was warm in the afternoons but windy and a little cold in the mornings and late evenings in early May, warming up in June.

Always check local weather websites before your trip. Here are some packing tips:

  • Clothing: For summer visits, pack lightweight, breathable clothing for the warm Mediterranean climate. Don’t forget swimwear and a cover-up for the beach. Local weather websites can help you with the best forecast. You can also buy clothes in Tolo or Nafplio, but they might be expensive during peak tourist seasons.
  • Beach Essentials: Items like sunscreen, beach towels, and hats can be bought locally or borrowed from your hotel or apartment, but you may want to bring your preferred sunscreen and a reusable water bottle.
  • Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring, and flip-flops are perfect for the beach. As a Brazilian, my favorite beach flip-flops are the Havaianas Flip Flop Sandals . They are the best for walking on the beach and have beautiful styles suitable for strolling through Tolo’s city center or any beach village worldwide! Since some Greek beaches, like those in Santorini, have stones instead of sand, I also recommend barefoot water shoes to protect your feet.
  • Toiletries: Bring your favorite sunscreen and basic toiletries, although you can buy anything you need at local shops.
  • Medication: Bring prescription medication and some basic emergency pills. Although you can buy these in Tolo or Nafplio, it’s better to have your regular medications with you.
  • Travel Documents: Passport, travel insurance, driver’s license (if you want to rent a car), and any necessary health documents.
  • Bottle of Water: We recommend bringing a recyclable water bottle , such as a stainless steel one for durability and pure taste, to carry fresh water around.

Getting Around

  • Renting a Car: Renting a car is recommended for flexibility in exploring Tolo and nearby attractions. You drive on the right side of the road, just like in Canada.
  • Local Transport: Local buses and taxis are also available for getting around.
  • Tours: You can book tours from Tolo to other areas by checking local tour stores or GetYourGuide.

Tolo enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate. Summers (June to August) are hot and dry, while spring and autumn are mild and pleasant. We experienced some chilly winds in early May 2024, so bringing a sweater or scarf is a good idea.

Don’t forget to always check local weather websites before your trip.

The official language is Greek, which can be difficult to learn if you haven’t spoken it before.

However, English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas, so communication shouldn’t be a problem.

Local Cuisine

Don’t miss out on trying local dishes like:

  • Greek salads;
  • Fresh fish and seafood;
  • Delicious Greek pastries, bakeries and peinirli ;
  • Greece ice cream flavors;
  • Cheese and olives;
  • Greek wine and Ouzo .

Health and Safety

Tolo is a safe destination, but it’s always wise to follow standard travel safety practices. Consider bringing a travel money belt, especially for cities and beaches. Carry a small first aid kit and stay hydrated, especially in the summer heat.

eSIM Internet and Connectivity

Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, cafes, and restaurants.

However, for reliable mobile data throughout Greece, including remote areas, we highly recommend using an eSIM card from Airalo . We’ve been using Airalo for a while now, including trips to Morocco, Ireland, Brazil, and most recently, Greece, and we’ve loved the experience.

During our travels, Airalo provided 100% reliable mobile data, which was crucial for staying connected. For instance, we even made a Facetime call to our family from the Sahara Desert to share the stunning sunset—a memorable experience made possible by Airalo’s service .

Electricity – Power Travel Plug Adapter

Greece uses the European standard 230V/50Hz voltage and Type C and F plugs. It’s essential to bring a suitable adapter if needed, especially for cell phones, cameras, and other electronics.

If you are traveling as a couple or have multiple devices, we recommend bringing more than one adapter. In our experience, we had only one international adapter, but with our numerous devices, it wasn’t enough. We ended up buying an additional adapter in Nafplio since we couldn’t find what we needed in Tolo.

Having multiple adapters ensures you can keep all your devices charged, especially if both of you need to work or use your electronics simultaneously.

According to the official website tolo.gr , this small church is an ideal place to visit for its view, its unique aesthetics, but also to attend or organize religious ceremonies, such as weddings and christenings. The unique color palette of the church, in bright blue and white, radiates romance and the Greek aura with the amazing view of the Argolic gulf.

Acropolis of ancient Asini

The acropolis of ancient Asini is one of the many castles in Greece that were built and inhabited in antiquity (300 BC). It was mentioned by Homer in the Iliad and it was used until World War II by the Italian army. The Kastraki peninsula and the archaeological site of Asini are just 800m away from the beach of Tolo.

Daskaleio – Little church of Zoodochou Pigi

Daskaleio is one of the 3 islands located a short distance from Tolo and is easily accessible by boat. This islet is home to a 17th-century church, Zoodocho Pigi Daskaleiou, where, according to local history, a Greek school was secretly operating during the Turkish occupation. The history and natural beauty of this small island make it one of the most beautiful attractions in Tolo.

Koronisi is the smallest of the three islets of Tolo and has a mini church as well, dedicated to the Holy Apostles, which was built in the first half of the 19th century. You can visit it by boat, canoe, or SUP board and it is incredibly close to the beach. The lighting of the temple creates a wonderful atmosphere in the bay of Tolo at night, that you don’t want to miss.

Romvi Argolidas is the largest of the three islands of Tolo and it is also at a breathing distance from the port of the village. The remains of a Venetian fortress, dating from the 17th century, are still preserved on it. This islet also has sandy beaches on its southern side, ideal for swimming.

Agia Moni (Aria) Nafplio

Aria Nafpliou is a village located 10 kilometers northwest of Tolo. There lies Agia Moni Nafpliou, a 12th-century (1.144 AD) monastery, dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi. It is a women’s sanctuary and a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture with its overall atmosphere suitable for peacefulness and relaxation.

Beach of Tolo, Greece

Beach of Tolo, Greece

This beach is Tolo’s most popular attraction . It is one kilometer long and its waters are shallow and calm. The entire village is built along this beautiful and family-friendly beach. There you will find beach bars, cafes, and taverns with fresh fish and local seafood. The residents are polite and willing to help you in whatever you need.

Archaeological sites & monuments near Tolo, Greece

During the mooring of your boat in Porto Heli , spend a few days in Tolo and its attractions. The following suggestions for the nearby archaeological sites will provide you with a unique experience combining a great journey in Greek history and the beautiful Greek landscape.

Epidaurus, Greece

Just 30 kilometers east of Tolo (half an hour’s drive) is the stunning archaeological site of ancient Epidaurus, and a further 12 kilometers away is Old Epidaurus, a village with beautiful beaches and fish taverns. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Little Theater of Epidaurus and the Sunken City as well. The wider area is also worth visiting, as it is suitable for hiking and snorkeling .

Mycenae, Greece

At a distance of half an hour north of Tolo lies the archaeological site of Mycenae. It dates from the 2nd millennium BC and the period from 1600 BC until 1100 BC is widely known as “Mycenaean”, because of its extraordinary civilization development. Among other things, you will admire the Gate of Lions, the vaulted tomb of Atreus, the Cyclopean Walls, and the Underground Tank of Mycenae.

Nemea, Greece

Less than an hour away from Tolo you can find Nemea , a region famous since ancient times for its wine (this is where the Agiorgitiko PDO variety comes from). If you find yourself in the area of Nemea, don’t let the chance of visiting the archaeological site and the Archaeological Museum slip away. Also, try a hiking trip to Aidonia, a magical area with a waterfall and rich vegetation.

Ancient Tiryns

Ancient Tiryns, Greece

There are many archaeological sites in the wider area of Tolo, and Ancient Tiryns , a Mycenaean fortress just 20 minutes away, is now included in your long list. Tiryns has been inhabited since the Neolithic era, experiencing its greatest growth during 1400-1150 BC. Unfortunately, after 1150 BC it gradually declined completely.

Palamidi Fortress

Palamidi Fortress, Greece

Last but not least, we recommend the two emblematic sights of the city of Nafplio. A 20-minute drive away from Tolo is the 17th-century Palamidi Fortress, built by the Venetians. In Palamidi, Theodoros Kolokotronis was imprisoned for 11 months and according to the legend, his horse broke the 1000th step of the castle and left it with its famous 999 steps (in fact there are only 857).

Bourtzi, neas Tolo Greece

At the same distance, in the harbor of Nafplio, one can also admire Bourtzi, an island fortress built by the Venetians in the 15th century AD. The fortress is a unique attraction, as it follows the shape of the island and is made of the island’s own stones. Over the years it has been used as a castle, as hangmans’ accommodation, and also as a luxury hotel that hosted celebrities until 1970.

Tolo: how a small village in argolida transformed into a top destination.

Lina Papadaki reintroduces Tolo through her social media accounts

BY VOULA AKRIVAKI

Translated by angeliki kouroutzi, published 06 september 2021, a house in tolo/ photo: shutterstock.

Just 145km away from Athens city centre, Tolo is a great destination both for your summer holidays and for mini getaways before the first autumn rains. Departing from the capital, it will take you about two hours to reach it and find yourself on amazing beaches, having avoided cramped ferries and long waits.

The majority of the inhabitants of Tolo are of Cretan origin. Its land was granted to Cretan refugees who fled their island in an attempt to escape the fury of the Turkish conquerors. For several decades Tolo was a poor fishing village with tiny plots and houses. Children would walk to school from Tolo to Nafplio barefoot. However, all this gradually changed in the 1960s, when performances at the ancient theatre of Epidaurus turned into a meeting point for the rich and famous. It was the era of Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis, whose fame brought American, French and Italian yachts to Greece. Looking for a quiet place to moor their yachts, they discovered picturesque Tolo with its crystal clear waters, fresh fish and friendly inhabitants.

Slowly, Tolo gained fame; outdoor toilets were converted into rental rooms, locals would rent half of their house to tourists, while their families lived in one single room and, thus, little by little, the first tourist accommodations appeared. In the following decades, with a peak in the 1980s, Tolo went from zero to hero very quickly. It became a top tourist destination with numerous fish taverns by the sea and five legendary discos that would stay up late until dawn. It may have experienced a slight downturn since the mid-1990s, but it has long since bounced back dynamically, in response to travellers’ need for “slow travel”, relaxing, hassle-free holidays, good food and clean seas. Greek art shops, sophisticated boutiques and restaurants with great gastronomic aspirations are what make Tolo stand out from the neighbouring settlements. It should be noted that the Danish Canoe Kayak Team, which visits Tolo twice a year for training, has its boats here.

Journalist and advisor to the President of Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation – ERT S.A. Lina Papadaki has been bombarding me since spring about Tolo and my curiosity has been piqued. For she always talks with such love and passion about its history and the warm hospitality of the locals that stems from their Cretan origin; about “the most delicious and fresh fish and –if you’re lucky- slipper lobster that you will hardly find elsewhere”; about the beautiful beach with its crystal clear waters and the one-day excursions to the three amazing islets spread out in the picturesque bay; about the fact that “here you will have the most relaxing holiday ever”.

No need to rush or plan anything

Lina, an avid fan and local, constantly posts photos of amazing waters and continues to convert me: “the best time of the day is early in the morning, going down to the beach when everyone is still asleep, the sound of the sea and the colours of the sunrise are simply splendid, the breeze is incredible”, and she continues, “know that Tolo is wonderful all year round, even in winter, but you will enjoy it most in June or September, when Psili Ammos resembles those huge blue lake of the Italian North”, she stresses, “start from the pier and walk to Ancient Assini, but walk barefoot in the sand to feel the energy of the earth, take a dip in Kastraki first and then return”, and also, “take the boat that takes you to Spetses, Hydra, Monemvasia and Nafplio. Between Tolo and Spetses, if you are lucky, you will see pods of dolphins giving an amazing show next to the boat”, she concludes. Unable to resist any longer, I packed a couple of clothes, two swimsuits, a pair of flip-flops and a towel and set off for Tolo.

My day in Tolo started idly. There is no need to rush or make plans. Here everything is close by, cafes, beach, taverns and bars are all ten minutes away. Breakfast is offered by numerous cafés around the village, such as Esperando on Sekeri Street serving sweet and savoury crepes, waffles and nice cappuccino. You might even want to come back in the evening for cocktails and delicious pizza. For a coffee with a sea view, go to Ippocampus, overlooking the entire bay of Tolo and the teeny-tiny island of Koronissi.

Psili Ammos

My next appointment is with the beach of Psili Ammos that stretches in front of the village. Note that many of the accommodations are right on the beach. You put on your swimsuit, grab your towel, walk down the steps and…. into the water. Sea umbrellas, sunbeds and beach bars; Psili Ammos is fully serviced, yet there is also enough space for all of you who wish to simply lie down on your towel and enjoy the sun. If you are seeking for some privacy, go to Kastraki, located just before the archaeological site of Ancient Assini, a beautiful beach of fine shingle with clear blue waters. If you want, you can go even further and discover more beaches, as there are many in the area. Just after the cape of Ancient Assini, unfolds a long beach that stretches out to Drepano. In the same area, the beach of Plaka, where the legendary Triton campsite is located, has in recent years improved considerably, featuring nice beach bars and cafés. After Vivari, about twenty minutes from Tolo, Kondyli beach is one of the most beautiful in the area, large and pebbly, with incredible waters, and fully serviced. Very close by you will find the long and sandy beach of Kandia, where “Baraki” beach bar serves amazing margaritas –an ideal place for a late night by the beach. Iria beach, just after Kandia, also boasts excellent waters. The whole coastal area from Tolo to Iria is wonderful, with many lovely beaches.

And when you’ve had your fill of sun and sea and the smell of fried squid and grilled octopus leaves you drooling, head to “Romvi”, a fish and seafood tavern with tables on the sand. Overlooking Koronissi, “Steki” also features tables on the sand and is famous for its fresh local ingredients. Try their fried anchovies which are fiendishly delicious and as crispy as chips! For Mediterranean cuisine, Maria’s Restaurant in Boumboulinas Street easily competes with all those classy Athenian restaurants, while its wine cellar is exceptional. The restaurant’s elegant exterior is surrounded by beautiful bougainvillea trees, while there is also an impressive terrace right above the sea. Known among the locals as “Tsatsarakias”, “Neon” tavern is one of the oldest in Tolo, serving delicious casserole dishes and fine fried fish. “Karnagio”, the new entry in Sekeri Street, is housed in a beautiful stone building and serves Modern Greek cuisine on a comfortable wooden terrace with a thatch roof. “Leimonia” restaurant serves everything from meat and seafood to pizza in a lovely cool lawned garden with palms and mulberry trees. “Arkoudas” restaurant in Assini is particularly famous among meat-lovers. Try their grilled ribs and hand-cut French fries. “Nakos”, located in the very heart of Drepano, offers great casserole dishes and grilled meats.

Tolo by night

Overlooking Koronissi

At night I find myself wandering the streets and beach of Tolo to discover its nightlife. Until the 1990s Tolo featured five discos and attracted many youths who would party until the break of dawn. Now the nightlife has moved to the coastal road between Nea Kios and Nafplio, but there are still plenty of bars for a casual drink. With breath-taking views of the entire bay and sophisticated tunes, “Kokkinos Vrahos” is the most iconic bar in the area. “Remember” and “Gorillas” boast beautiful summer settings and great cocktails by the sea, while “Barbaressa” often hosts Greek music nights attended by both British and Greek tourists.

Tolo may be ideal for a relaxing holiday, but that doesn’t mean it lacks sports and outdoor activities. The bay of Tolo is ideal for windsurfing, kite surfing and canoeing, and there are many water sports centres and diving schools. Don’t miss the opportunity to discover the wonderful seabed of Koronissi, Romvi and Daskalio, the three small islands in the bay of Tolo. Rent a boat from “Bik John” or “Telis” and tour the three small islands; discover Romvi’s hidden beach, Daskalio’s stunning waters and the rocky coastline and crystal clear waters of Koronissi.

Visit Ancient Assini in the late afternoon or early morning. It is about two kilometres from Tolo and can be reached by car or on foot. On the archaeological site there are findings from the Middle Helladic, Mycenaean, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Houses have been found, a Roman bath, a fruit press, etc., which testify to the glamour of the area in the past. A cultural centre has also been established in the area where various cultural events are held. The view from the site is unique. Another great route, much longer (about 8km), that goes through the famous orange groves of Argolida is the one starting from Tolo and leading to Nafplio. The route from Tolo to Vivari (about 6.5km) via the wetlands –where many herons, cormorants, ducks and swans find shelter- is also breathtakingly beautiful.

Taken over by the third generation of the family, Louloudakis super market has everything you might need.

For fluffy bread, fresh pastry and excellent cakes go to Cleopatra’s bakery.

Panagiotis’ bakery in the neighbouring village of Assini is best known for its delicious cheese pies and freshly baked rusks.

14 Best Things to Do in Nafplio Greece

Nafplio is one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in Greece. As it is located deep in the Argolic Gulf in the Peloponnese, the gorgeous town gives the sense that you are on a Greek island that looks a lot like Plaka in Athens. At least this is how it makes me feel, every time I visit Nafplio, which is quite often throughout the year as I can drive there around 2 hours from Athens.

places to visit near tolo greece

Why do I love this town so much? There is a zillion of reasons! As I explore the town I am always in awe of the three imposing Castles, the narrow cobblestone alleys with neoclassic mansions covered in bougainvillea, the modern and stylish hotels, and the traditional taverns, to mention a few. What about the beautiful Aegean sea that surrounds it?

Picturesque alleys, two women walking in a sunny day. Nafplion.

As if that wasn’t enough, Nafplio is located close to some of the most important archaeological sites in Greece: Ancient Corinth , Mycenae, Tiryns, Argos, Nemea, and Asklepios Sanctuary with the Theater of Epidaurus.

What to do in Nafplion, Nafplion main square. Nafplion.

So, without further ado here are my favorite 14 of the best things to do in Nafplio, Greece!

Best Things to Do in Nafplio Greece

1. wander in old nafplio alleys.

An alley with shops and some people walking. Nafplion.

The old part of Nafplio is car-free so strolling is one of the best things to do in the town. Some parts are connected with stairs that lead to higher neighborhoods of the town.

The narrow alleys house tourist shops, cafes, taverns, the koboloi (beads) shops, bars, and hotels in a harmonious sequence. Nafplio has many neoclassic mansions, built between 1828 and 1920, some of them quite impressive, that are used today as hotels, shops, or residences.

Historical Tip: Nafplio became the first capital of Greece right after the end of the War of Independence against the Ottomans in 1821. Before that, Venetians, Franks, Romans, and the ancient Greeks left their impressive cultural traces on Nafplio.

2. Have a Greek Coffee at Syntagma Square

Syntagma Square is the main square in Nafplio, paved in marble and surrounded by popular restaurants and cafes. You will also find Greek banks, the Archaeological museum loaded with ancient artifacts, and the Vouleftikon building, an Ottoman mosque that served as the first Greek Parliament.

Meters away from Syntagma Square stands another Ottoman mosque that is used nowadays as an events center under the name Trianon while right across stands the Xenon Inn Hotel , a beautiful boutique hotel, housed in an impressive historic building and with breathtaking views of the Palamidi Fortress.

places to visit near tolo greece

A pedestrian-only area, Syntagma Square is the heart of the town, and everyone, both locals and visitors will pass by the square at least once a day. Find a table, order your first Greek coffee (I always take it with some sugar), and enjoy the view of the people wandering about.

3. Walk up/Drive to Palamidi Fortress

places to visit near tolo greece

For a little extra adventure and aerobic exercise, walk up the 857(!) steps to the Venetian Fortress of Palamidi built in 1687.

places to visit near tolo greece

If climbing all those stairs sounds like a huge task – I have done it and then my legs were shaky for quite some time from the strain – then consider taking a taxi or driving to the top of the Fortress. It is only 5 km out of Nafplio.

When you reach the top of Palamidi Fortress, let the spectacular view of Nafplio, Acronafplia, and the eastern Peloponesse amaze you. Don’t miss visiting the imposing bastions, the historic church of Agios Andreas, and the impressive reservoirs that still collect the rainwater of the hill.

General Entrance €8, Open Daily between 08:00-20:00. Take sunscreen, a hat, and a bottle of water.

Marathon Tip: Every March the town organizes a running event that includes a Marathon, a half marathon as well as shorter distances.

4. Take the Boat to Bourtzi Castle

The Bourtzi Castle in Nafplion

Take the small boat from the port on a few-minute trip to Bourtzi Castle, Nafplin’s famous landmark. Built by the Venetians in 1473, underwent various additions and alterations by all the conquerors.

Enjoy the stroll around the small castle and take photos of the town from Bourtzi’s top terrace.

5. Go to Acronafplia Castle and swim on Arvanitia beach

places to visit near tolo greece

Short History of Akronafplia

  • In Akronafplia you will find traces of a prehistoric settlement, while in the western part of the acropolis, parts of its ancient polygonal walls are from the 4th century BC.
  • In 1210-1212, the Franks occupied Nafplio and started building the walls and the castle
  • The castle was taken by the Ottomans in 1540 and renamed Its Kale(Iç Kale)
  • The Venetians overtook the Ottomans in 1686 (in 1687 they bombarded Acropolis Hill in Athens)
  • The Ottomans reoccupied Nafplio in 1715 and
  • Finally, in 1822 it became Greek territory again

In 1961, the Xenia Hotel was built in Acronafplia, a very ambitious state-financed touristic plan that went bankrupt and closed by the end of the 70s. The relic still exists in Akronafplia and awaits the Greek authorities to decide upon either being demolished or rebuilding it.

The Xenia Hotel overlooks the popular and easy-to-access Arvanitia beach, where you also see traces of the old Xenia beach facilities. The waters are clear although I prefer to swim to Karathonas Beach, which is some 2 miles down the coast (see activity 8).

6. Enjoy the beautiful Sunset at Arvanitia Promenade

The “Promenade of Arvanitia”, is the favorite walk of Nafplio residents. The promenade starts after the end of the beach and ends at Arvanitia Square, at a total distance of about one kilometer.

The Arvanitia Promenade in Nafplion Greece

The entire route is dominated by the cliffs of Acronafplia, with its imposing walls and stunning views of the Argolic Gulf.

Just before the middle of the promenade, you will find the small church of Panagitsa, or Santa Maria Della Grotta, a favorite pilgrimage for both the inhabitants and its visitors. I love this walk, especially when the sun sets, it is one of the most romantic things to do in Nafplio!

7. Stay in 3 Sixty Hotel & Suites

8. Karathonas Beach

places to visit near tolo greece

At the Arvanitia parking lot starts a beautiful trail going all the way to Karathonas Beach, which is two miles east of Nafplio.

The coastal trail is straightforward to follow with fantastic sea views. Karathonas sandy beach is where most of the locals go, there are cafes and four fish tavernas to have lunch or have a beer looking at the beach.

At the end of the beach, there is the white Church of Agios Constantin. Wander in its yard and the nearby houses where people and many cats live.

If you continue a few meters toward the main road you will see that another trail begins. If you follow this easy and short trail – and undeniably this is by far my favorite hike in Nafplio – you will get to the small seaside chapel of Agios Nikolaos Krasoktistos.

You don’t want to hike to Karathonas? Take a taxi to drive you there, it is very close to Nafplio.

Family Experiences – Greece

Table of Contents

Last Updated on January 26, 2023 by Celeste .

In July 2020, my family and I travelled to Tolo. Tolo (Tolon) is a friendly beach town in the heart of the Argolid, the north-eastern corner of the  Peloponnese relatively near Athens.

Tolo, Greece

Built around the curve of a sheltered bay, Tolo’s impressive landscape features a long sandy beach and two pretty islets awaiting exploration at a short boat ride across the bay. A tempting array of hotels, cafés and small restaurants lines the beach and there are more in the village.

Although busy at weekends and in the high season, Tolo village has retained its charm. It is an excellent base to discover the famous ancient sites and food of the Peloponnese. Tolo is particularly recommended for families and kids of mixed ages as everyone will find plenty to do whatever their interests.

Best Beaches in Tolo, Greece

The Beach of Tolo

The long sandy beach of Tolo is excellent for families, especially with young kids. The waters are calm, shallow and safe. You can rent beach chairs and umbrellas and you will find many facilities on the beach.

Kastrakis is a smaller secluded beach with sand and pebbles located near the ruins of Ancient Asini. It has crystal clear waters with a sandy sea bed. The beach is not organized.

Apart from its excellent family beaches and kid-friendly atmosphere, the sheer range of things you can see and do from Tolo is enormous. There is so much to see and do from Tolon that you may have trouble fitting it all in – at least if you want to leave some time for the beach!

Tolo Water Sports scaled

Tolo is an excellent place for water activities, especially for beginners and kids, as it offers a safe, sheltered bay.

Take a Boat trip

A very popular activity in Tolo is a cruise around the bay, down the coast or to the back of Romvi island with the beach and crystal clear water for swimming and/or a picnic.

Tolo Island Daskalio scaled

Together with Tolo Sailing and Introdive, we had a great day on the water.

IMG 20200704 094852 scaled

The children loved the morning speed boat ride with Introdive . We admired hidden caves, a seal, underwater mysterious and lots of birds. The destination was the small island of Daskalio where we had a BBQ picnic on the beach and enjoyed water sports and scuba diving.

IMG 20200704 095501 scaled

In the afternoon we sailed back to Tolo port on the beautiful sailing boat of Tolo Sailing .

IMG 20200704 104213 scaled

The skipper was very hands-on with the kids, they loved sailing the boat and felt like a captain! If one day is not long enough, your family can opt for a two-day or weekly customized sailing trip.

Admire views at Agia Kyriaki Tolo

For the best viewpoint over Tolo, drive up to the church of Agia Kyriaki.

From here, you can admire, Tolo, Tolo Bay and the islands of Daskalio, Koronisi and ‘Aphrodite’.

Discover Romvi or the island of Aphrodite

One of the two small islands that adorn the Gulf of Tolo is called Romvi. One can find sections and walls of a medieval castle, scattered ruins of a Venetian naval base and various buildings and houses. From far, the island resembles a woman and that is why locals refer to her as Aphrodite.

Koronisi is one of the three little islands opposite the port of Tolo. On the island, there is a chapel where weddings and baptisms are carried out.

Explore Daskalio and the small church of Zoodochou Pigi

Our stop at the Daskalio island also gave us the opportunity to visit the small church on top of the island dating back from 1688. It is said that during the period of the Turkish rule, there was a “secret school” on the island. In that “secret school”, Greek children were educated secretly in their language and their history in order to maintain their heritage.

The Monastery of Aghia Moni

The Monastery of Aghia Moni is 3 kilometres Northeast of Nafplion and dates back to the 12th century.

IMG 20200705 094628 scaled

It is one the most important churches of the middle Byzantine period and is in excellent condition. Besides beautiful architecture and views over a landscape resembling the hills of Tuscany, this monastery is famous for its monastic spring with its special water.

Rural and Natural Experiences

Tolos unique landscape and excellent local products make it a great location for agro-tourism. During a one-day customized private tour, we had the chance to learn more about local products and crafts.

IMG 20200705 104058 scaled

Our rural day started with a visit to a bee farm. After a short drive into the Tolo mountains, we met a local beekeeper. Not only did we learn more about bees and tasted the honey, we also had the opportunity to become bee farmers and watch the bees up close. The kids loved wearing the protective gear and study the workers.

IMG 20200705 105455 scaled

Karonis Ouzo

IMG 20200705 120516 scaled

Second stop was the Karonis Ouzo Distillery . Recently mentioned in the New York Times Style Magazine , the family-run distillery has been an institution in Nafplio for over 145 years. The fourth- and fifth-generation father-son owners, Fotis and Yiannis Karonis, are famous for distilling ouzo, perhaps the most well known Greek alcoholic drink. We learned more about the production process and the adults sampled the famous liqueurs made with regional ingredients.

IMG 20200705 120353 scaled

Melas Olive Oil

The Peloponnese region is famous for its olives and premium olive oil. A visit to an olive farm should, therefore, be on your bucket list when visiting this part of Greece. We went to Melas Oil .

IMG 20200705 125553 scaled

After a tour around the olive garden en the factory, we got to taste the famous Melas olives and olive oil. During this hands-on experience, the kids learned more about the biological production of olives, the olive harvest, and the process of turning the fruits into the famous Greek liquid gold. We finally picked up some cosmetics as Melas also produces face & body cosmetics based on organic extra virgin olive oil and honey.

Families in Tolo can also go biking, hiking, walking or even visit a vineyard.

Famous Ancient Sites

Tolo AncientAsini 1 1 scaled

The Peloponnese is rich in history and archaeology. Culture-loving families will especially appreciate their time in Tolo. From Tolo, it is easy to visit many of the world-famous ancient treasures of the Peloponnese. The impressive list is long; Ancient Mycenae, Argos, Ancient Tirinta, Ancient Corinth, Ancient Epidaurus, Delphi and Ancient Nemea, Mystras and Olympia.

Ancient Assini in Tolo

A 20-minute walk from Tolo over the headland is ancient Assini, from where a fleet was launched against Troy.

IMG 20200703 181402 scaled

There are well-made pathways, imaginative circuits around the promontory, a multimedia room, a guide to the many types of flora (and fauna in the form of wild tortoises) and much, much more, including information on the archaeological discoveries made in the 1920s by the Swedish Crown Prince and the damage caused by the Italians in World War II.

IMG 20200703 181536 scaled

There is a fine shingle beach below – ideal for a cooling swim after exploring the site – and a handy taverna a little up the hill above the sea. There can be few if any, Homeric sites which you can explore, then swim from the beach below followed by a lazy taverna lunch overlooking the bay!

Tips or visiting the ancient sites in summer with kids:

  • Make sure your cameras and phones are fully charged!
  • Wear comfortable shoes
  • Bring hats, sunblock, and water
  • Try not to carry anything too heavy

Visit Ancient Epidaurus

IMG 20200705 150641 scaled

Ancient Epidaurus is just 32 km from Tolo (a 35-40 minute drive) and has a magnificent amphitheater dating from 4BC designed to seat 13000 to 14000 spectators.

IMG 20200705 151825 scaled

This tradition continues today during the famous Epidaurus Festival that runs each summer with some of the greatest Greek and foreign actors performing here.

IMG 20200705 152829 scaled

The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus is considered the greatest ancient Greek theater in terms of acoustics and aesthetics. It was a strong element of the ancient Greek religion and its original purpose was to entertain the patients of the nearby Asklepios hospital.

IMG 20200705 162030 scaled

In Ancient Greece were several Asklepios sanctuaries, considered the first hospitals of the world. Epidaurus is considered the mythological birthplace of Asklepios and was one of the most significant cult sites of Ancient Greece.

IMG 20200705 162840 scaled

Not only the theatre mesmerized us. The entire site of Epidaurus is a must-visit with kids. They will love to discover the temple of Asklepios (375 BC), the temple of Apollo Maleata (4th century BC) and other buildings related to Epidaurus’ function of a medical centre.

IMG 20200705 163058 scaled

The well-preserved stadium and patients hall brought ancient history back to life! You will also see a library, baths and many other structures. Ancient Epidaurus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At the Acropolis in Athens , you can also find an ancient theatre, as well as an Asklepios Sanctuary. You can find everything you need to know about visiting Epidaurus with children in the post: Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, Greece with Kids

Do not miss the Archaeological Museum in Epidaurus. With its collection of Ancient Greek medical instruments and the impressive statue of Asklepios, kids will understand how great the ancient Greek civilization was.

IMG 20200705 160334 scaled

Before you visit the ancient sites in Greece, I advise you to do some reading with your children. Here you can have a look at my recommended list of 20 Best Books about Greek Mythology for Kids.

Ancient Mycenae

IMG 20200706 120610 scaled

Ancient Mycenae is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and to date, still is a mystery in many ways. You’ve probably heard a lot about the Mycenaean civilization. Along with the Minoan civilization, it ranks among the greatest civilizations of Europe. While you’re in Tolo, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this magnificent site with the kids.

IMG 20200706 121109 scaled

The moment you arrive at the Mycenae archaeological site, you’ll be blown away by the magnificent Lion Gate and its enormous relief sculpture. The site really shows off the impressive architecture of the Mycenaeans. The nearby located Treasury of Atreus, the famous beehive tomb, is an experience that no one in the family will forget.

IMG 20200706 104844 1 scaled

The Museum of Ancient Mycenae displays the findings from the excavation.

IMG 20200706 115106 scaled

The objects are very well arranged and in such a way as to support an understandable narrative for the kids. With the help of signs, maquettes, photographs and more, a better understanding of Mycenaen culture is possible even with young kids.

IMG 20200706 113722 scaled

There are lots of engaging parts in the museum and our tour guide pointed out the most important object. My kids loved the Cyclopean masonry and the (copy of) the gold mask of Agamemnon in the museum.

IMG 20200706 113645 BURST001 COVER 2 rotated

To make the best of your visit to the archaeological sites, it is wise to book a state-licensed official guide. Not only can they truly bring the ruins to life with vivid storytelling, but an official guide will also make sure you do not miss any of the attractions and will be able to answer all your questions. When travelling with kids, a kid-friendly guide will keep the kids engaged and focussed. They specialize in custom tours that are tailored to families. Thank you Katerina, for your passion and enthusiasm.

Tolo, best beach town for visiting Nafplion

Bourtzi fortress traditional fishing boat Nafplio sh scaled

A 25-minute bus ride takes you to elegant Nafplion . Largely Venetian it is topped by massive fortifications (1,000 steps up!) and adjudged one of the most handsome towns in Greece. Nafplion is a very popular destination for foreigners and Greeks. However, in summertime, Tolos is actually the place to pick as your location. From there on, it is easy to discover Nafplion with its castle (and everything else) at your own pace.

IMG 20200704 184711 scaled

Stroll around Nafplion

Nafplion was the first capital of the modern nation and the narrow lanes of the old town, its mix of Venetian, Turkish and neoclassical architecture, the busy waterfront, the shaded squares and the many fine tavernas, make this historic town a magnet for Greek and foreign visitors alike.

IMG 20200704 184222 scaled

Many consider it to be one of the most romantic cities in the entire country. Our hosts showed us the beautiful highlights of the city. We enjoy a leisurely stroll through the old alleyways with historic buildings, and explored hidden corners of Nafplion. Don’t forget to stop for ice cream!

places to visit near tolo greece

The remains of a prehistoric settlement located on a hill overlooking Tolo’s bay is one of the area’s highlights. The fortified city dating back to 2nd and 3rd century B.C. was discover by Swedish archaeologists led by Axel W. Persson, some 90 years ago along 25 Mycenaean tombs that were filled with artefacts that accompanied the dead on their way to the Underworld of Hades. Among the findings was a figure of King of Asini which is housed in the Archaeological Museum of Nafplion.

This archaeological site is where literature, archaeology and religion come together. Here you will also find a collection of black and white photos which have been taken from the personal photo archive of Giorgos Seferis, a Greek Nobel laureate who wrote a poem dedicated to the King of Asini in the summer of ’38.

This area is also a botanical garden where you can find different plants and flowers. Remains of the fortifications are visible until this day. Evidence shows that perhaps under the threat of Argos, Asine was fortified for the first time at the end of the 8th century B.C. Over the centuries Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and the Italians repaired and reinforced the wall, attesting to the strategic significance of the site.

Other traces found here are two small Roman baths as well as a water supply system. An elaborate cistern partly carved into the rock is visible in the southeastern section of the Lower tower. Tolo sailing offers visitors a wonderful opportunity to explore the Argosaronic gulf on either a day trip excursion or multiple day sailing trips. During our stay in Tolo we sailed to the nearby islands of Romvi and Daskalio. We anchored the sailing boat in Daskalio, a small uninhabited island just behind Romvi which is home to a tiny church that was used as a secret school (krifo scholio) for children during the Ottoman rule so that the kids would not lose their connection with the Greek language, religion and culture.

places to visit near tolo greece

According to Greek Mythology the city was built by Perseus, the son of Zeus and Danae and when he left the city of Argos for Tiryns, he ensured that the one-eyed giants, Cyclops would construct the walls of Mycenae, and make them so heavy that no human could ever lift. The Lion Gate is a perfect example of such construction.

The history of this glorious city continued for centuries, yet it is best known thanks to Agamemnon, the son of Atreus, who led the expedition against troy during the Trojan War, mentions of whom can be found in Homer’s Iliad. Although many of the excavations from Mycenae are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Athens, the smaller museum onsite offers a great opportunity for visitors to admire the artefacts that tell the story of this great elite civilization – and as Homer describes in the Iliad, Mycenae is “rich in gold”.

Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus

Ancient Theater of Epidaurus

Located on the southern side of Greece, Peloponnese is the most popular holiday region of the Greek mainland. As this was the main center of operations in ancient times, Peloponnese has many interesting archaeological sites. Certainly, it doesn't lack in natural beauty either, as the landscape varies from steep mountainsides to valleys and long sandy beaches.

Things to see & do in eastern Peloponnese

The eastern side of Peloponnese actually consists of the prefectures of Corinth and Argolida. These are great holiday regions with lovely resorts and interesting sites. The entering landmark of Peloponnese is the Corinth Canal, a usual stopover on your drive around the region. Sights in close distance to the Corinth Canal are the Medieval Castle of Acrocorinth, Ancient Corinth and Ancient Nemea. A lovely town nearby is also the thermal town of Loutraki with nice beaches and a new hydrotherapy center.

Other important sites in eastern Peloponnese are Ancient Epidaurus , Mycenae , and Tyrins . The picturesque town of Nafplion is great to walk around and so are the seaside towns of Ermioni and Porto Heli . The most popular beach place in the region is Tolo , a family holiday destination with an organized beach. From Tolo, day cruises depart to the islands of Hydra and Spetses .

Things to see & do in northern Peloponnese

The largest town in northern Peloponnese and third largest town of Greece is Patra , the port town that serves ferries to Italy and the Ionian islands . In Rio, close to Patra, is the famous cable bridge of Rio-Antirio that connects Peloponnese to the rest of Greece. Nice beach places in northern Peloponnese are Diakofto, Kiato, Xylokastro, and Egio, while a popular winter destination is Kalavryta , a mountainous town with historical importance. Close to Kalavryta, on the slopes of Mount Helmos, there is a large ski center .

Things to see & do in western Peloponnese

The most popular beach destinations in western Peloponnese is Killini and Katakolon. The large golden beaches of Killini are great for relaxing, while the ferries to Zakynthos and Kefalonia depart from there. Over the last years, Katakolon has become popular as a cruise line stop. This lovely fishing village is only 30 min drive from Ancient Olympia , the birthplace of the Olympic Games.

Things to see & do in southern Peloponnese

The southern side of Peloponnese has two prefectures: Laconia and Messenia. Popular holiday destinations in Laconia are the Medieval Castle Town of Monemvasia and the beautiful town of Gythio . Nice places close to Gythio are the region of Mani, the town of Areopolis and the impressive Diros Caves. From the port of Neapolis in southern Laconia, tourists take the ferry to Elafonissos island with the Caribbean beaches, while very important to visit is the Castle of Mystras with the numerous Byzantine churches.

The region of Messenia also has fabulous places from a visit. Seaside towns like Pylos, Kalamata, Kyparissia , Kardamili, Methoni, and Koroni provide the best setting for relaxing family holidays. Interesting ancient sites to visit are the Medieval Castles of Pylos and Methoni, the Mycenaean Palace of King Nestor, the archaeological site of Peristeria and Ancient Messini.

Things to see & do in central Peloponnese

The central side of Peloponnese is probably the least open to foreign visitors. However, it is very popular among Greeks and especially Athenians who visit the mountainous villages of Arkadia for weekend breaks. Dimitsana, Vitina, Karitena, Lagkadia, and Andritsena are picturesque villages in the mountains. The temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae, near Andritsena, is a masterpiece and included in the Unesco list of world monuments.

Very interesting is also Ancient Gortyn near Ellinikon and the Monasteries of Philosophou and Timios Prodromos. On the slopes of Mount Mainalon in Vitina is the ski center of Mainalon that gets very popular in winter. Extreme sports are also popular in the region and visitors can try rafting in River Lousios, canoe-kayak in Lake Ladonas and river trekking in River Neda.

The coastal side of Arkadia has two famous towns: Astros and Leonidio, surrounded by lovely beach resorts and beautiful nature. Paralia Astros and Sambatiki are the two most frequented beach places of central Peloponnese.

The Best Things to Do on Paros—the Greek Island Best Savored in Shoulder Season

If you think that Labor Day marks the end of summer vacations and seaside revelry, think again. On the Greek island of Paros, September is the best time to visit. Thanks to its rising popularity, Paros in July and August has recently become enormously busy. Roughly the size of the city of Stockholm at 75 square miles, Paros can feel insufferably crowded in the peak of summer. But in September—and for a few weeks beyond—a lot of that pressure is released, making the island feel more expansive and easier to enjoy.

Shoulder season is when residents get their Paros back. “After the hustle and bustle of [summer], the island starts to breathe again,” says Christiane Smit, who has lived here for 16 years as a ceramic artist and is now owner of the newly opened villa Moonhouse Paros . “The sea is still warm and inviting, but the beaches are no longer crowded. The narrow streets of Naoussa, Parikia, and the villages regain their charm, gently humming with actual life.”

Paros' white stucco homes overlook the Aegean Sea.

But the lack of traffic and tourist hordes are not the only reasons why visitors and locals alike named September the best time on the island: According to Paros native, tour guide, and author Konstantinos Statheros, the month also brings great weather following the hot, windy days of August. “September is definitely one more month of warm weather, but without the scorching temperatures of the main summer months,” he says. “The Cyclades experience severe winds and rough seas in August, but these stop in September, and the sea calms down.”

If an end-of-summer jaunt to a tranquil, crowd-free island is what you’re craving, Paros in September impresses with a medley of warm beaches, rugged hiking trails, lively restaurants, and atmospheric villages. Just be mindful that this is when a slower pace of life starts to take over the region—so pull up a beach chair, pour yourself a glass of Parian wine , and take it easy.

Getting around Paros

During high season, traffic on Paros and many other Greek islands can be patience-defying—but it eases up in September, so springing for a car means you’ll be able to explore more of Paros instead of overpaying for taxis. (You may hear about visitors vrooming on an ATV; don’t bother—they’re regularly getting into accidents.)

Monastiri Beach Bar & Restaurant is a popular destination for travelers, especially in September.

What to do on Paros: beaches, farms, and hiking trails

Since you’re in Greece , the best beaches will be high on your list: Agioi Anargyri is a popular family-friendly option on a tranquil bay near Noussa. Half the beach has hotel sunbeds and umbrellas, which anyone can rent, and the other half is free for the taking. Not far is Santa Maria, one of the longer stretches of sand on Paros at about a mile and a half. There is a more organized beach club and watersports concession, but you can also just lay your own towel on the outskirts of their operations and enjoy the sun, sea, and views of the adjacent island of Naxos.

Monastiri, just beneath the blue dome of Agios Ioannis Detis church, is an atmospheric spot where you can post up on a rock to watch boats sail by. If you’re craving provisions, Monastiri Paros , one of the island’s more popular beach bars, is right here. Sandy Krios near Parikia is beautifully organized with bars and beach clubs. Crios , which opened for the 2024 season, gives mini Mykonos vibes with its minimalist aesthetic, customized bottles of Miraval rosé, and rotating selection of European DJs.

Among the many natural, untouched beaches (no bar, no sun loungers), the most popular might be clothing-optional Lageri, surrounded by rolling sand dunes. It’s a 15-minute drive from Naoussa, and by no means a secret (nothing on this island seems to be anymore)—but it’s still a fantastic spot for a seaside sunset. For something totally quiet: In the southwest between the fishing village of Aliki and the airport, Voutakos is a small sandy beach that very few travelers go to.

To get outdoors off-beach, explore Paros’ fertile farmlands just south of Monastiri at Petra Farm , where you can tour the grounds, meet goats, and then taste the fruits of their labor—juicy tomatoes, tasty figs, sweet-and-spicy chili jam. Just north of Drios, there’s also Domaine Myrsini , a new winery from husband-and-wife team Nicolas and Marie Astrid Bourget, who moved to Paros from France a few years ago: Their low-intervention production of Cycladic varieties (roditis, assyrtiko) yields four different bottlings—all of which can be enjoyed during a wine-tasting on the sweet hilltop patio. Early fall is also prime hiking season, perfect to do the four-ish-mile Byzantine Road from Lefkes to the village of Prodromos.

Entirely less strenuous (or maybe not) is the island’s shopping scene. Homegrown fashion brand Leto has boutiques in both Naoussa and Parikia to mine colorful linen pieces of symmetrical dresses and classic button-down shirts. Athens -based jewelry label Neso has a Naoussa boutique full of whimsically shaped rings, earrings, and necklaces festooned with rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. For architectural ceramics, make an appointment with Todd Marshard , who started his career at Donna Karan’s Urban Zen and is now living and working on Paros. His Lefkes studio is full of unusually shaped vases and decorative sculptures.

There are also plenty of local events happening on the island in September. Moonhouse’s Smit recommends getting acquainted with a traditional harvest: “While it’s not a formal festival, harvest is a communal activity that many locals partake in, and sometimes visitors are invited to join,” she says, adding that beyond wine there’s also kazani , a type of distilled grape and one of the more unique spirits produced on Paros.

Tour guide Statheros says you can’t miss Kapetaneika, a celebration of the region’s seafaring heritage. This usually takes place mid-month and features some of Greece’s most magnificent wooden sailing vessels. And, of course, “it wouldn’t be complete without a feast and plenty of drinking that starts at noon and ends very late at night,” he says.

The Best Bagels in New York City

Naoussa harbor is lined with outdoor seating so diners can soak in the balmy Mediterranean weather.

Where to eat and drink on Paros

Visiting a popular island like Paros during the dying days of the season makes it easy to dine well without a reservation—which is near impossible in peak months. Mario , a nearly 20-year-old culinary icon in Parikia (it recently relocated from its bustling main square address in Naoussa) is a sea-facing perch with some of the best sunset views on Paros. As for chef Markoulis Giannis’ esteemed kitchen, the ceviche is famous—but the fava bean puree, fried squid, and the seafood orzo with saffron are well worthwhile. The wine list is heavy on Greek labels, including a few local to Paros; Moraitis, Seiradi P.F.C., and Moraitico.

Siparos , an easy-breezy open-air restaurant overlooking a small beach, has its own jetty to arrive in style via boat. Either way, Siparos is a particularly lovely pick for lunch, after spending the morning hiking or sunbathing. (The clothing-optional Lageri beach is only a few minutes away.) If you don’t mind indulging in fried stuff, get the fried feta donuts and the sea bream nuggets—addictive and pair wonderfully with a bottle of rosé (take it from me).

A favorite in Ampelas, Blue Oyster is right on the water so they offer beach service if you choose to come during the day. The order here is the fish pie, wrapped in a flaky, fried phyllo dough. Barbarossa back in Naoussa is the people-watching choice, especially for a pre-dinner cocktail. Outside, at the port, under strings of twinkling Christmas lights: the vibes are always right, and the later it gets, the more boisterous the ambience becomes. If you want a gentler dining experience in Naoussa, walk through its meandering alleys for Statheros , which is owned by a Parian family and serves mostly traditional Greek fare. There might already be a chill in the air so tuck in the kakavia , a fish soup loaded with onions, parsley, tomato, and olive oil.

Crowning a hill in the village of Kostos is Santa Pacou , a relative newcomer to the local dining scene when it opened in 2023. The outdoor terrace overlooking the Aegean is where you’ll want to be for a lingering dinner. Yes, there’s seafood, but there’s also a lot of hearty meat, such as juicy oven-cooked goat, tender pork shoulder, and classic moussaka. Do breakfast-for-dinner and end the night with a plate of sweet-cream bougatsa for dessert.

Guestrooms at MoonHouse Paros are flooded with sun from their sea-view windows.

Where to stay

September hotel rates are also more forgiving on Paros, where the hotel scene is becoming luxurious enough to compete with Santorini and Mykonos. Double down on serenity at Cove , a minimalist 40-room hotel in the outskirts of Naoussa village. The 12-years-and-up guest policy means clientele are mostly couples or small families with older children; breakfast, pool time, and afternoons by the sea have a restful energy. There aren’t too many on-property amenities beyond the restaurant Rada, but there is a shop, spa, and fitness room. Staff can book guests a boat for a day trip to the tiny island of Antiparos, or sign you up for a ceramics-making class pronto.

Smit’s design-forward Moonhouse is among the newest villas on the island. On a secluded hilltop in Kotsos, this sleek, low-lying rental is the perfect small-group hideaway. Think: poured concrete walls, massive windows, a marble-framed fireplace, a gorgeous chef’s kitchen, and plenty of outdoor spaces. You’re not within direct access to a beach, but that’s what the 40-foot-long saltwater pool is for. The three-bedroom main house usually sleeps six, but two additional guest houses can easily double that capacity count to 12.
