baja california scuba Diving Highlights

Situated on the west coast of Mexico, Baja California is one of the most diverse yet accessible dive destinations on the planet. This 775-mile long strip of land separates the Sea of Cortez from the Pacific Ocean, creating a rich and unique marine habitat that is home to numerous endemic species and a wealth of migratory visitors. In 2005, the Sea of Cortez was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site , a testament to the value of this protected dive location.

Offering access to a huge array of  wildlife and some world-class scuba diving opportunities, the Baja California and the Sea of Cortez is an often overlooked dive destination just a short hop from many US cities. From the tiny critters found at the Midriff Islands to the largest of migratory marine mammals, as well as wrecks, offshore seamounts that attract pelagic visitors, hundreds of islets home to seabirds and sea lions, not to mention the annual whale shark congregations in the Bahia de Los Angeles, Baja California scuba diving really does have it all!

baja california diving destinations

We have picked our top 5 destinations for scuba diving in the Baja California Peninsula and the Sea of Cortez . Read on to discover the best Baja California diving spots and how to make the most of them.

La Paz is a quaint but well-established resort located two thirds of the way down the Baja California Peninsula’s east coast. Offering a well-established dive infrastructure, countless diving and snorkeling options, and a great range of accommodation and resorts, this is the perfect dive destination for a family or group getaway.

Diving the La Paz sites is usually done from shore, with operators offering two- or three-tank daily dives depending on the location. There are various wrecks to explore, as well as some caverns and caves, areas of rocky reef, and several offshore pinnacles that attract hammerhead sharks. The Bay of La Paz offers some great snorkeling spots and is home to sea lion colonies, individual sea lions making guest appearances on most dives.

Depending on the time of year, divers can expect to spot large migratory species such as whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, mobula rays, and even humpback and gray whales. This is in addition to over 800 species of small and medium-sized reef fish and some notable macro species.

Check out our La Paz destination guide for more information on our top Baja California scuba diving destination.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Diving Season: October and November are the best months to visit the southern Sea of Cortez.

Water Temperature : 72 to 84F (24 to 28C).

Difficulty: All levels of diving, although the offshore seamounts can experience rough swell so are suited to more experienced divers.

Non-diving Activities: Snorkeling with whale sharks and sea lions is a great experience for non-divers, as well as wildlife and fishing excursions, and kayaking trips.

Nearest Airport: Manuel Márquez de León International Airport (LAP).

2. Midriff Islands

The Midriff Islands offer some of the most varied diving in Baja California, however, they are accessible only via liveaboard. This makes for exclusive dive sites and some very unique diving for those who have the opportunity to visit. Highlights include enigmatic critters such as bluespotted jawfish, orangethroat pikelennies, signal blennies, and a variety of nudibranchs. There are some stunning wide-angle reef scenes to capture, as well as walls of rare black coral. And of course countless cheeky sea lions that thrive in the rich waters.

Dive conditions are as varied as the marine life, with changing currents, a wide range of water temperatures, unpredictable visibility, and surprise visits from open ocean visitors. But all this adds to the appeal of these fascinating islands. Topside wildlife is also stunning, with numerous rocky outcrops and uninhabited islands home to fearless seabird populations.

A liveaboard is the only way to explore the Midriff Islands and the best time to visit is July, August, and early September. Check out our trip report from our 2021 Sea of Cortez Photo Workshop which focussed on diving around the Midriff Islands.

Diving Season: Liveaboard trips run in July, August, and the first half of September.

Water Temperature: 72 to 86F (24 to 30C).

Difficulty: All levels of diving, although can sometimes be challenging.

Non-diving Activities: Liveaboards don’t present much opportunity for non-divers, although there are some snorkeling opportunities and hiking on some of the islands.

Nearest Airport: Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX).

3. Bahia de Los Angeles

Four hours south of San Felipe in the northern Baja California, Bahia de Los Angeles is an eco-tourism hotspot and designated Biosphere Reserve. Most famous for the scores of whale sharks that migrate to the bay every year, the waters of Bahia de Los Angeles also offer warm and relaxed tropical diving and snorkeling encounters with sea lions, turtles, and a diversity of fish life.

Whale sharks visit Bahia de Los Angeles between August and November every year, following clouds of plankton north through the Sea of Cortez during the summer months. These huge, docile filter feeders gather in their dozens to feed and breed before returning south into the Pacific Ocean at the end of the year.

Snorkeling with whale sharks in Bahia de Los Angeles is heavily regulated and only offered by official tour providers. The start of the season can be unpredictable so make sure to check that the whale sharks have arrived with a local operator. While the panga-style boats carry eight to ten guests, they only allow four swimmers in the water at any one time to reduce stress on the individual fish.

Diving Season: Year round, but snorkeling with whale sharks is available from August through to November.

  • Difficulty: All levels of diving, and also great snorkeling.

Non-diving Activities: Snorkeling is a must, as well as exploring the sleepy local area and conservation museums.

Nearest Airport: Loreto International AIrport (LTO).

Loreto is not typically on the radar for scuba divers, but it definitely should be. This small-town fishing village is not only charming and off the beaten path, but has ample amenities and diving opportunities to satisfy the well-traveled diver. Located about seven hours north of Cabo San Lucas and four hours north of La Paz, Loreto is located near the northern part of the state of Baja California Sur and two-thirds the way down the Sea of Cortez.

Known for its world-class blue whale encounters between January and March each year, Loreto is also a hotspot for spotting other whale species including humpback whales, gray whales, sperm whales, and a resident pod of fin whales that can be seen year-round. Common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins are also common off Loreto, and a pod of orcas visits the area occasionally.

Diving is mainly conducted around the islands off Loreto, namely Coronado, Carmen, and Danzante. Living among the reefs are large schools of graybar grunts, yellowtail surgeonfish, snappers, bigeye jacks, barracuda, blacknose butterflyfish, and Panamic sergeant majors. There are also lots of rays, including the endemic bullseye electric ray.

Diving Season: September through November are the best months to dive, although it is possible to dive year-round.

Water Temperature: Low 60F (15C) during the cold months of January through March to mid 80F (26C) in the warm months of September through November.

Nearest Airport: Loreto International Airport (LTO).

5. Cabo San Lucas & Cabo Pulmo

The bustling resort town of Cabo San Lucas and neighboring protected reserve of Cabo Pulmo offer some fantastic opportunities for diving Baja California’s southern tip. Located at the meeting point of the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez, this area is a magnet for large migrating pelagics as well as smaller inshore tropical species. There are also plenty of sea lion colonies along this coast with cheeky individuals making an appearance on most dives.

As well as scuba diving, there are many operators who offer whale watching and marine-life snorkeling safaris. Depending on the time of year it is possible to swim with various shark species, mobula rays, whales, turtles, whale sharks, and manta rays.

Cabo Pulmo is a great destination for families and groups of friends looking for an activity-based vacation. As well as scuba diving there are plenty of other watersports, ATV rental, cultural tours and plenty of bars and restaurants. Alternatively, Cabo Pulmo offers a more remote and low-key option and is the perfect area to relax and get away from it all.

“Discover Baja California Sur through the eyes of our satisfied customers! Read their reviews about our tours and excursions and join the adventure. Don’t wait any longer to enjoy the natural beauty of this incredible region!”

We had such a fun excursion. We went with our two daughters (ages 11 and 13) as well as my father-in-law, the excursion is great for people of all ages. Going in October made it even better because the water was warm and the younger sea lions were being super playful. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, showing us a lot of hidden gems of the area. We fully recommend this excursion with Fun Baja.

Testimonials funbaja

It was a great experience on the tour with our guide, Maru, and Captain Carlos; they took us to beautiful places where we had the opportunity to swim with sea lions and see many different types of fish and birds. We also had the chance to see a group of dolphins, turtles, moray eels, and even a manta ray. Maru is a knowledgeable guide (marine biologist) and committed to the environment, who was always attentive to show us the beauty of the place and its importance in the ecosystem. It has been the best way to get to know "the world's aquarium," as Jacques Cousteau called this place.

  • Tour Description

7 Days Diving Baja Sur!

Cabo Trek’s  meticulous organization takes care of:  transportation, accommodation, and activities,  all carefully planned to ensure a comfortable and relaxing time: there will be plenty of action but also time to chill out and enjoy the surroundings.

First Days: Cabo San Lucas

We will start the trip in Cabo San Lucas: the most charming town of the three. We will spend the first three nights here and get to know the local Marine Park with its sea lions, white tip reef sharks, shipwreck, and not to forget the famous arch. The “ Corridor , “the coastline that unites Cabo San Lucas with San Jose’, is also well worth exploring: exciting marine life can be found, such as eagle rays, mobula manta rays, and some of the bigger pelagic fish are also possible.

Journey to Cabo Pulmo and Sol de Mayo

As we move further into the Sea of Cortez  and drive in the direction of  Cabo Pulmo we definitely want to make a stop at the Sol de Mayo Waterfalls: cooler freshwater will make your day as you chill out at the bottom of the Sierra de la Laguna. The next day we continue our journey to reach our destination in Cabo Pulmo where the amount of fish will just blow your mind: Big Eye Jack tornados are impressive as is the chance to bump into bull and hammerhead sharks! This cozy little fisherman town has an incredible history to share: the transformation from overfishing to sustainable eco-tourism.

The capital of Baja California Sur: La Paz

Finally, we reach the capital of the region: La Paz. If you’ve never heard of Espiritu Santo Island, you’ll be surprised by the beautiful scenarios mother nature offers above and under the water! The warm crystal clear and turquoise waters and the white sand beaches resemble diving conditions that you would typically find in the Caribbean. The Galapagos of Mexico, as it’s known in the world of divers, due to its vast sea lion colony, is undoubtedly a highlight of the trip, as will be the break at Balandra beach.

All these places have incredible diving opportunities: sharks, rays, turtles, sea lions, and other large pelagic fish such as whale sharks, marlins, and tunas are possible and on the list of what you can expect to see. You’ll also find many different tropical species such as Yellowtail Surgeonfish, Pufferfish, Moorish Idol, Moray Eels, Butterflyfish, Snappers, Groupers, and not to forget that we’ll be on top of the most northern coral reef of the North East Pacific Ocean.

This trip is an excellent opportunity to explore the best parts of Baja California Sur accompanied by our friendly and knowledgeable PADI PRO’S guides and find out about the vast diversity each of the places we will stop has to offer. The additional basic yoga lessons, the Mexican-style food, and welcoming people are also “ingredients” for delivering long-lasting memories of this Baja adventure.

Sea of cortez adventure

Adventure Overview

Flat calm seas cobalt blue in colour and nobody else around makes summer one of our favourite seasons in the Sea of Cortez. With the bonus that this is when 80 – 220 whale sharks arrive in a deserted bay up north best accessed by small ship and expedition yacht. Summer adventures are about amazing animals, experiencing the genuine warmth of the people of Baja and venturing far off the beaten path.

Our onboard divemasters, guides and naturalists are there to introduce you to new experiences. Not a diver yet? This is your chance to try diving (or kayaking or paddle boarding or snorkelling) for the first time.

Video of our Summer Adventure & Whale Sharks in the Sea of Cortez! →

colony of the super cool blue-footed boobie birds

Off the beathen path

There is no other way than a small ship to visit tiny Isla San Pedro Martir, just one of the highlights of this trip. This tiny island in the middle of the Sea of Cortez is surrounded by deep upwellings of nutrient rich waters producing a bounty of life. This is home to the worlds’ largest nesting colony of the super cool blue-footed boobie birds as Mexico’s largest colonies of brown pelicans and brown boobies. We will do our best to get you ashore for a walk-about. The snorkelling and scuba diving is excellent with loads of sea lions, turtles, black coral and big schools of fish. A pod of sperm whales are usually resident nearby. Our spotter airplane will be on patrol to point us towards the sperm and fin-back whales and hopefully orcas and other big critters.

Over at Bahia de Los Angeles, the beaches are beautiful, the hiking, snorkelling and diving is great but the biggest feature is the largest aggregation of whale sharks on the west coast of the Americas with between 80 and 220 animals between May and October. There are virtually no other boats around and yes, you will be able to jump in the water and snorkel with these gentle and inquisitive giants.

Nautilus Belle Amie

This is real adventure!

While we have been operating similar trips for over 40 years, we are constantly checking out new possibilities and opportunities. We might go to shore and jump into air conditioned vans to travel inland to visit the remains of a jesuit mission and then a nearby ranch and short hike up a canyon to see ancient cave paintings. Or go ashore delivering gas and supplies to a multi-generational shark fishing family that has lived on a small island since the 1940’s (one of our captains grew up on the Isla) where visitors receive a warm and genuine Baja welcome and local speciality, empanadas de almijeta (clams). The deserted white sand beaches, brilliant blue waters of summer, flat calm seas and gorgeous scenery of the islands in the Loreto National Park will make you never want to leave. Is it hot in the summer?? Yes for sure. But we embrace that in the usual Baja way with covered sitting areas on the boat complete with fans, excellent air conditioning, lots of water activities in the heat of the afternoon and heading off first thing in the morning and then again late in the afternoon on adventures when it’s cooler outside.

You can expect fine dining, excellence in guest experience, the very highest levels of safety, lots of presentations and information from our naturalists and gorgeous evenings under the brilliant star lit Mexican sky.

Sample Itinerary

Fly into SJD. Cabo. Recommend 1 day early if possible.

Meet at SeeCreatures San Jose del Cabo by 2 pm for coach transfer to La Paz. Board 147-ft Nautilus Belle Amie. Cocktail hour, dinner and sail away into the sunset.

Day 2 – 7 -7

Explore the Sea of Cortez. Your ship is very quiet underway and stabilized for a smooth ride and we will do much of our travelling at night so that you wake up to a new destination every morning. This is the perfect time of the year for cruising as the north winds are long gone and seas are almost always very smooth. Our plan is to beat the heat of the desert by offering activities first thing every morning (or your option to stay on the ship for a lie-in and maybe go for a paddle) and then back to the air conditioned ship for lunch. Some relaxation and beach and water activities in the afternoon. The beaches that we visit are way off the beaten track and sure to be stunningly beautiful. Afternoon scuba diving also available.

Morning disembarking at La Paz after breakfast. Transfer back to SJD or optional post-trip extension in La Paz.

Operated For Safety

Gallant Lady - Sunset

Safety is a very serious business. Mother Ocean can be capricious and unforgiving. We hold ourselves to the highest standards and you should expect and demand no less. In our view, every dive boat should be operated within a certified ISM safety management system, outfitted with sprinklers, emergency smoke hoods for everybody and the same safety, fire, life saving equipment and radios as the largest cruise ships. Captains, mates and engineers should have professional commercial mariner qualifications and all crew should have STCW professional mariner certification. Safety is not something to publish in a brochure. It’s part of our DNA. A cornerstone of our culture. Something that we have been living by for every day of the last 30 years.

Here is some more information for you that could be helpful:

La Paz is an amazing destination but with two distinct seasons.

Our cold water season is from December 15th through to May 15th with water temperatures from 64-76f and during that time you can expect to see a number of different species of whales such as Gray whales, Humpback whales, Blue whales, Fin whales, short fin pilot whakes, killer whales or Orcas and Sperm whales too. Our warm water season is from July 15th through to November 15th with water temperatures from 84-90f and visibility often over 60 feet.

The whale sharks season starts from October 1st to May 31st every year and they in numbers up to 30 individuals in the bay of La Paz. My suggestion is always from November to late April in order to be sure of sightings.

Our sea lion colony of Los Islotes is an excellent dive all year round with 600 brown Californian playful sea lions but it is restricted during mating season June 1st to August 30th. The seamounts of El Bajo where we often see schooling hammerhead sharks and silky sharks provide an awesome dive year round but in the winter months sometimes weather conditions do not allow us to get out there as it is 55 miles away.

From late June to late October we often see giant Pacific manta rays at one specific dive site called La Reina off the island of Cerralvo. Most of our diving is around the island of Espiritu Santo and on our website you can see a number of those dive sites but there are over 25 different sites to visit in La Paz.

September and October are the busiest months of the year but the winter months of February to April are also very popular for the whale watching too.

Embark on one of the most memorable days of your life

We offer visitors a peek through a very special and little known corner of the world. To truly appreciate the beauty of La Paz, you have to look beneath the surface!

Testimonials

The most exciting activity in Cabo! One of the best things I've done - EVER! We got to spend nearly one and a half hours in the water with 3 different sharks! One Mako and 2 Blue sharks. They were the most amazing creatures to observe and it was a complete thrill! Thanks so much to our great guides Martin and Miguel!!! They kept us well informed and completely safe all the time! Hope to be back soon!

Amazing!! I had the most amazing time swimming with sharks! It took only 10 minutes for first shark to come close to boat! The guys at CaboSharkDive are very professional and I felt safe all the time! They know what they are doing! I will be back in Cabo and I will do this again...no doubt!! Highly recommended! You will never forget! Thank you !

Highlight of our Cabo trip! This is a MUST-DO activity in Cabo! Such a special and unique experience. Jacopo and his crew are absolute professionals, the entire process felt incredibly safe, and overall we had a blast. On our trip we saw 2 Makos and a beautiful Blue Shark, literally having them swim within a couple feet of our faces. So cool. We’re definitely doing this again next time we’re in Cabo!

Worth every penny! I did two separate tours with Cabo Shark Dive on consecutive days. The first being Whale sharks in La Paz and the second being the shark dive. Both tours were amazing for different reasons with the exception of 1. The staff. Absolutely top notch, very informative, knowledgeable and were genuinely concerned you were enjoying the experience and did everything in their power to ensure you were. I can’t wait to come back and do this again. Miguel, Jacob and Clara thank you all so much!

A MUST DO IN CABO! Spent 1 week in Cabo from Texas, and this was the highlight out of my entire trip. Will definetely do again, and I highly reccomend for anyone that has a "fear" of sharks, and wants to get over it.

Coolest day of my life I cannot express in words how awesome this trip was. My wife and I are not "thrill seekers". We went to Cabo to relax and enjoy the resort we stayed at. I was searching for things to do after our first day there, and "swimming with sharks" popped up. I booked an outing and the rest is history. I will say that once we spotted a shark, and were about to get in the water my wife was terrified. Miguel put out his hand to her and said "let's finish what you started" and proceeded to swim her out in the water. She is so happy that she decided to get in water, as this was a terrific moment in both our lives. The calmness just cant be explained. The crew, led by Miguel are extremely professional and just good people. I cant wait to go out with them someday soon. If you are thinking about this trip, do it! You will not be disappointed.

Incredible This was a once in a lifetime experience. Was in the water with 2 hammerhead sharks 6-9ft. Highly recommend!!

Cabo Shark Dive - AMAZING! What an amazing experience this was! The crew was experienced, informative and entertaining! Weather was perfect and saw a few sharks..........such an adrenaline rush. A check off of our bucket list. Truly a trip one should book and experience. You DID NOT DISAPPOINT Cabo Shake Dive Team!!!! Thank you for the adventure.

Shark Diving in Cabo San Lucas & Baja California Sur

We have some pretty amazing opportunities for shark diving in cabo san lucas and the surrounding areas, right outside our own front door. here’s a quick crash course in diving with sharks in our neighborhood..

The town of Cabo San Lucas, situated on the southernmost tip of Baja California in west Mexico, has some of the best shark diving encounters the aquatic world has to offer. The currents from the Pacific Ocean clash with the currents of the Sea of Cortez and make the marine environment unique and diverse. Deep canyons, plenty of nutrients and clear waters are some of the reasons why this part of the world is renown for amazing and thrilling shark diving experiences.

Throughout the year, the changing seasons bring different species of pelagic marine animals through the area, whether it’s for shelter, mating or hunting. Among these species are dolphins, sea turtles, jumping Mobula rays, sea lions, whales and of course sharks. Makos, Silkies, Blue sharks, Hammerheads and Whale sharks are just a few of the incredibly diverse population of sharks you’ll be able to see in these pristine waters.

Cabo San Lucas Shark Diving

Sharks and rays can be seen on almost any dive at almost any dive site in the marine park of Cabo San Lucas and the Corridor (the mouth of the Gulf of California and the Sea of Cortez). But the bigger pelagic sharks usually prefer open ocean, blue water. For that reason, Gordo Banks is where they are seen more often. Gordo Banks are two deep sea mounts that usually have strong currents filled with nutrients. The smaller fish come to feed in the area and the sharks follow. Dive Ninjas can take you shark diving in Cabo San Lucas on regular Scuba diving tours at either Gordo Banks, the Corridor or the local marine park. Or we can arrange a special shark diving excursion to secret spots out in the blue. Join expert marine biologists and shark divers, who use unique and safe techniques to lure sharks, without feeding, in the open ocean. Swimming and coming face to face with sharks, in a safe and controlled environment in their natural habitat is an experience like no other. And learning and talking about the sharks in Cabo San Lucas with local and international experts makes it even better.

Seasons and conditions

Different species of sharks can be encountered in different seasons of the year while shark diving in Cabo San Lucas . Some sharks, like Makos and Blue sharks prefer the colder, clearer water of the winter months. Whereas Silkies are more common in the warmer summer months.

Between November and April, when the water is a lovely 75-80F/23-27C and the visibility ranges between 70-100ft/25-30m, are the best conditions for large pelagics and schools of fish. From December through June we can usually spot Mako sharks, the fastest shark in the world, with big eyes and sharp teeth that grows to 6-12ft/2-3.5m. And, around February-April, any photographer’s favorite, Blue sharks, with slim bodies and long pectoral fins, they are playful and engaging and grow to 7-9ft/2.5-3m.

The colder months of April to June, when the water drops to 68-75F/20-23C, bring the Smooth hammerhead sharks to the area. These beautiful, elusive and rare sharks, can grow to a massive 12-16ft/4-5m and weigh up to 880lb/400kg. Encounters with them are unique and breathtaking.

When the water warms up again, between July and November, 75-85F/23-30C, is when the Silky sharks frequent Los Cabos. Curious and inquisitive, the silkies grant an exceptional experience. They can grow to 6-9ft/2-3m and come close for face to face encounters with divers and snorkelers.

shark Diving in Cabo San Lucas

Bull shark diving in Cabo Pulmo

Another exciting shark diving tour on our specialized Baja Expeditions diving menu is at Cabo Pulmo Marine Reserve, one of the most successful conservation projects in the world. As the northernmost coral reef in the eastern Pacific, it is a UNESCO world heritage site. National Geographic described it as “the most robust and healthy marine reserve in the world”. Since Its declaration as a marine sanctuary, in 1995, the fish population has grown more than 400% and today no less than 500 different species can be observed in the park. Among them are resident species like turtles, parrot fish, eels, crabs, nudibranchs and pelagic species, such as rays, dolphins and of course sharks. The Bull sharks have been spotted in Cabo Pulmo for the past few years, and reports are increasing every year. They can be seen almost all year round, from December to August, and seem to prefer the shipwreck “El Vencedor” dive site. Groups of the muscular, heavy looking sharks can be seen nursing, hunting and resting around the shipwreck and other dive sites close by.

Snorkel with Whale sharks in La Paz

2 hours north-east of Cabo San Lucas, on the shores of the Sea of Cortez, the city of La Paz sits in one of the best places for snorkeling and swimming with Whale sharks in the world. Encountering these magnificent, gentle giants is possible from fall to spring, and the highest concentrations are usually between November and April. As huge as 40+ft/12+m the Whale sharks can grow to more the 21 tons/47,000lb, they are the largest fish on earth. But in contrast to their immense size, they are harmless, filter-feeders, that have tiny teeth and survive on plankton. Check out our Dive Ninja Whale shark tours for swimming and snorkeling with the majestic and beautiful Whale sharks in an unforgettable adventure.
