Bern walkingtour

walking tour bern switzerland

What's so special about Bern? We hardly know where to begin, but one of its best highlights is certainly the fact that the Old City is ideal for exploring on foot. We recommend the following route for your walking tour of the city:

  • Download the City Map

  • https://moz.com/blog/meta-data-templates-123 --> Twitter

Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit)

If you start your tour from Bern's Bahnhofplatz (Station Square), you will see the Heiliggeistkirche even from a distance. No wonder, since it is an unmistakable part of Bern’s cityscape. In addition to holding religious services, this Protestant-Reformed church also serves as a space for concerts, diverse events and exhibitions. By the way, it’s located directly opposite the famous “Loebegge” – a popular meeting place for Bern locals out on dates.

walking tour bern switzerland

Käfigturm (Prison Tower)

After passing the Heiliggeistkirche, turn into Spitalgasse. This is the start of Bern's shopping street, which runs all the way to the Nydeggbrücke bridge, so be sure to plan some time for a few stops and don’t forget to explore the shops just off the “high street” as well. You will spot the next sight looming about 250 metres ahead. The Käfigturm first served as a defence bulwark and later as a prison tower, state archive and information centre. Today it houses the Polit-Forum Bern with exhibitions and events on political topics.

walking tour bern switzerland

Zytglogge (Clock Tower)

To reach the Zytglogge, continue walking along Marktgasse, about the same distance as from the Heiliggeistkirche to the Käfigturm. The Zytglogge has been standing in the heart of Bern's Old City since the 13th century. You’ll soon see that there’s almost always a crowd of people in front of the Zytglogge. It’s no wonder because there is so much to marvel at, from the impressive clock face to the moving figures. The clock puts on an entertaining show five minutes before every full hour. The next hour is heralded with a parade of bears, jesters, the golden rooster and Chronos, the god of time. It’s definitely worth watching!

walking tour bern switzerland

Einstein House

Kramgasse begins some 150 metres after the Zytglogge. If you follow this lane straight ahead you will find, in an inconspicuous corner on the right-hand side, the former flat of Albert Einstein. The Einstein House gives visitors a more personal glimpse into Einstein's life. Those who want to learn even more about Einstein's life and theories will find a larger and more detailed exhibition at the Bern Historical Museum, or they can take one of the city tours dedicated to the genius.

On the trail of Albert Einstein

walking tour bern switzerland

Rathaus (Town Hall)

Walk straight on for the next 200 metres after the Einstein House and then turn right into Kreuzgasse, where the Rathaus is located. To this day, it has remained the political centre of the city and canton of Bern.

walking tour bern switzerland

Walk back along Kreuzgasse and turn left to continue walking back through the Old City to the large bridge (Nydeggbrücke). Turn left before the bridge and head down the little lane to the smaller bridge. It’s worth the walk, as the Untertorbrücke is the oldest bridge in the city. Once you have crossed the Untertorbrücke, you can walk up the small slope on the right. When you reach the top, the old bear pit will be directly opposite you. However, Bern’s three resident bears, Ursina, Björk and Finn, have been enjoying their new home in the spacious BearPark, right next to the pit, since autumn 2015. These days, the three bears are only fed in the bear pit.

walking tour bern switzerland

Rosengarten (Rose Garden)

A ten-minute walk from the BearPark brings you to THE spot for photos in Bern: the Rosengarten. To get there, take the small path on the left and follow the “Rosengarten” signs. The short climb is worth it when you take in the impressive view over the rooftops of Bern all the way to the Gurten – we promise! The large grassy area, playground and restaurant offer lots of opportunities for all ages to relax, play and eat. The garden gets its name from the more than 250 types of roses that bloom today in what was the former cemetery of the lower Old City

walking tour bern switzerland

Grosser Muristalden

Walk the same way back and return to the BearPark. Still haven't had enough of the lovely view? Then take the uphill path on the right-hand side towards Schosshalde. Various benches await you along the route, where you can lean back and enjoy the view of the turquoise-blue Aare river and the stunning outline of the Old City.

walking tour bern switzerland

Nydeggbrücke und -kirche (Nydegg Bridge and Church)

Once you arrive back at the BearPark, you can cross the Nydeggbrücke (the large bridge) and make your way to the church of the same name, which symbolises the official start of Bern's Old City.

walking tour bern switzerland

Münsterplattform (Minster Terrace)

When you reach the Nydeggkirche church, you can turn left into narrow Junkerngasse. As you walk along it, you will see from afar the monument that occupies such an important place in Bern's skyline: the Bern Minster. Instead of walking right into the cathedral, however, we recommend a short detour. As soon as you reach the building, turn left and walk along the outside wall to the small park, the Münsterplattform (Minster Terrace). It’s a popular meeting place for lunch, picnics, boccia (also known as boules or pétanque) and other leisure activities. It also boasts a stunning view of the Kirchenfeldbrücke bridge and Bern's local mountain, the Gurten.

walking tour bern switzerland

Bern Minster

By now, you’re probably impatient to see the Bern Minster from the front as well! To do so, walk along the Minster Terrace to the small passage on the other side and you will arrive directly at Münsterplatz (Minster Square). Interesting fact: The cathedral’s 100-metre-high spire is the highest in Switzerland. And be sure to keep your eyes open because directly above the main entrance you’ll see an impressive piece of art depicting the Last Judgement. The detailed image catches everyone's attention.

walking tour bern switzerland

Parliament Building, Parliament Square, Parliament Terrace

Continue along Münstergasse in the direction of the train station and turn left towards the Kirchenfeldbrücke bridge. Just before the bridge, head to the right along the path to the Bundesterrasse (Parliament Terrace). From there you can enjoy the view of the sparkling Aare river, the Gurten and the Marzili swimming pool. When the weather is clear, the view even reaches as far as the world-famous trio of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. Speaking of good weather, this stopover is also perfect for a relaxed picnic on sunny days. And don't let the amazing view distract you from looking behind you to the Federal Palace as well. The spectacular building with its green dome is over 300 metres long and one of the most significant buildings in Switzerland. In the centre stands the Parliament Building, where sessions of the Federal Council, National Council and Council of States are held. Would you also like to admire the imposing building from the front? Simply walk around the building to the Bundesplatz (Parliament Square). To get back to the train station, turn left – with the Parliament Building behind you – and walk to the end of Schauplatzgasse.

Best Walking Tours in Bern, Switzerland (Uncover The City’s Secrets)

best walking tours bern

Bern is one of the most important cities in Switzerland. It’s the seat of the government, the de facto capital of the country, and the only city whose entire old town has been inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. If you’ve never been to Bern before, a walking tour is the perfect way of getting acquainted with this charming city.

While it is entirely possible to organize your own walking tour, it’s simply not the same experience as being guided through the city by a local who can tell you the history of every single landmark you visit. Another reason to book a guided tour is to get a local’s recommendations on the best museums, shops, and places to eat, so you never fall into a tourist trap while you’re in Bern. So, here’s a quick overview of some of the best walking tours of Bern, Switzerland!

Table of Contents

Bern: 90-Minute Stroll Through The Old Town

bern old town buildings

It takes approximately 20 minutes to walk from one end of Bern’s Old Town to the other, so a 90-minute walking tour includes plenty of time to explore the city’s most famous landmarks and attractions.

This tour is led by a knowledgeable local guide who takes you to all the best-known landmarks in the city of Bern, including the Cathedral, the Zytglogge, the Parliament Building, and more. The guide provides you with invaluable knowledge about these attractions, which paints a picture of their importance to the city, but also their history and development over the years.

This is one of the more affordable walking tours of Bern, so it’s perfect for travelers on a tighter budget. Also, the tours are done in smaller groups, so you can be a bit more relaxed and easily get the guide’s attention if you’ve got any additional questions.

Bern: Zytglogge – Tour Through The Clock Tower

Bern zytglogge

The Zytglogge tour is great for tourists who’ve already explored a bit of Bern on their own and want to learn more about the individual landmarks in the city. This tour specifically focuses on the Bern Clock Tower, and it includes a tour of all the rooms inside it.

You will be welcomed inside Zytglogge , and discover the history of this iconic landmark. Each floor covers a certain period of the clock tower’s history, while the top floor offers a stunning panoramic vista of Bern’s rooftops.

The highlight of the tour is probably the visit to the room with the clock mechanism. What’s best is that your guide knows pretty much everything there is to know about the Bern Clock Tower, including how the mechanism works, so this is an opportunity to learn a lot about the city’s most famous landmark.

Express Walk of Bern with a Local

Bern Fountain

If you don’t have too much time in this city, an express tour of Bern with a local is absolutely perfect. It’s like a speed course about Bern – you’ll still get to see the top landmarks and attractions in the city, but you’ll be going around at a faster pace because the tour is only an hour long.

The tour might as well be called ‘Bern in a nutshell’ because that’s precisely what it is – a condensed walking tour that covers all the main sights in the city, with background information on the culture and history of everything you’re seeing while you’re being guided through narrow cobblestone streets.

This tour is done in groups of six people at the most, and usually, there are even fewer participants, so you can really ask the guide as many questions as you want.

Highlights and Hidden Gems of Bern

Zytglogge Street

Highlights and Hidden Gems of Bern is a guided two-hour walking tour that covers some of the best-known landmarks in the city, but also the places that aren’t quite as popular with tourists. You’ll get to explore Bern through the eyes of a local and see beyond the top-rated attractions, which is ideal for people who are already familiar with Bern’s most famous landmarks.

The tour includes quick stops at the Clock Tower and the Parliament building , but beyond that, you’ll also see the Prison Tower, many gothic fountains, old buildings, and some of Bern’s oldest cafes. The guide will tell you about the city’s incredibly long history and you’re free to ask as many questions as you want.

Bern Old Town Walking Tour (Private Tour)

walking tour bern switzerland

Private walking tours are great because you get the guide’s undivided attention. They’re generally much more personal than tours in large groups, so there’s wiggle room to adjust the tour to your personal wants and needs.

Also, a private guide usually goes above and beyond to make sure you’re having a great time and seeing everything that interests you. This specific two-hour tour includes visits to several of the lesser-known attractions in Bern, like the Church of the Holy Spirit, the Einstein House, the Tramdepot brewery and restaurant, and the fabulous Rosengarten. It’s also possible to climb to the top of the tower of the Bern Cathedral during this tour, but only if you want.

Capture the Most Photogenic Spots of Bern with a Local

bern old town and the aare river

The walking tour of Bern’s most photogenic spots is great for people who want to have stunning photographs to remember this city. Whether you consider photography a hobby, or you just want to have beautiful pictures of yourself in Bern, this tour is absolutely perfect.

You’ll still get to see Bern’s most famous landmarks, but from different angles, than you would get on regular walking tours of the city. This tour also includes trips to panoramic spots just outside the old town, which offer stunning views of Bern’s rooftops.

The tour lasts two hours and is done in groups of six people at most. The tour guide is also knowledgeable in photography and will help you get the perfect shot at each of the locations.

Capture The Most Instaworthy Spots of Bern with a Local

what bern known for

This walking tour of Bern is very similar to the previous one, except that it’s done by a different guide. The main difference is that this tour is half an hour shorter, so it’s a better option for people who don’t necessarily want to spend two hours walking around Bern and exploring photogenic spots.

You’ll be taken to Bern’s most Instagrammable spots, which range from panoramic viewpoints outside the historic center, to spectacular fountains in the heart of Bern. This tour is done in groups of six people at the most, and the guide speaks English, German, and French.

It’s best to specify your language preference when booking, and it’s recommended to try and book the tour during the golden hour, for the absolute best photographs.

Bern’s Art and Culture Revealed by a Local

Bern Historical Museum

The Art and Culture tour of Bern is probably the best tour for anyone who is genuinely interested in these subcultures in Bern. Learn about the connection certain famous artists have with this city, about the history of Bern’s best-known museums and art galleries, and also about the spaces where the newer generation of artists get the opportunity to grow and showcase their work.

This tour is great if you want to explore beyond historical landmarks and really get into the depths of a specific subculture. You won’t get to visit any museums during the tour – an hour and a half is way too short a time for that – but you will get tips on which museums you might like best, which are a must-visit, and which you can feel free to skip.

Explore The Best Guided Intro Tour of Bern with a Local

Berntor

An introductory walking tour is a great way to get to know Bern if it’s your first time in the city. The tour is done only in small groups (up to 6 people) so it will feel very personal. You can choose from three languages for the tour (French, English, German) and it’s best to note your preference while you’re booking the tour.

This is a two-hour walking tour of Bern, in which a local guide takes you to all their favorite spots in the city. It will include some of the most popular landmarks in the city, but you’ll get to see Bern through the eyes of a local and get inside information on all the best cafes, bars, restaurants, and bakeries.

Bern Capital City Private Tour

walking tour bern switzerland

A private, four-hour tour of Bern is the best for tourists who really want to get to know the city. The tour includes pickup at your hotel, and it will be done only with your group, whether you’re traveling with one other person or five. It’s the best way of discovering Bern because it’s very personal, and the guide can adapt their tour plan to suit your wants and needs.

This tour covers all the most famous landmarks in the heart of Bern, but also a trip to the rose garden, and a proper tour of Einstein House. Tickets for the museum are included in the cost of the tour, and you will have plenty of time to discover everything. Overall, if you want to feel like you’re walking around the city with a friend who knows absolutely everything about Bern, this is one of the best tours to book.

Unique Sites of Bern – Private Walking Tour for Families

Bern Cathedral

Unique Sites of Bern is a tour crafted for families visiting the city. It’s for groups of up to four people and lasts for two hours, during which time you get to discover all the most famous landmarks in the Swiss city, but also hear all the different legends and folklore tales about Bern.

The tour guides are expecting children to be present on this tour, so it’s somewhat crafted around them. Kid-friendly sites will be included in the tour, and many of the tales are the same ones locals in Bern recount to their children. If you want to explore the city with a local guide but don’t feel comfortable bringing your child on a larger tour because it might be disruptive, this is definitely something you should consider.

The only downside is that the tour is available only in the English language.

Bern Old Town – Private Historic Walking Tour

Bern in Autumn

A private walking tour for groups in Bern is the best option for anyone who is traveling in a large group and struggling to find an appropriate walking tour for them. This specific tour is suitable for groups of up to 20 people. The price is the same whether there’s one or 20 people in the group, so you’ll get the best value for money only if there are actually 20 of you.

It’s a two-hour tour that begins at Marktgasse, Bern’s iconic city square. You will get to see the iconic towers, the Cathedral, and the famous government buildings, but also some lesser-known landmarks and attractions. The Granary, Nydeggkirche, Hôtel de Musique, and many of Bern’s iconic statues and fountains are also included in this walking tour.

Bern: Private Custom Tour with a Local Guide

Bear Pit

A custom private tour of Bern with a local guide is the best way to explore the city. You can choose the pickup location, the duration of the tour, and the amount of people in your group. The tour can last anywhere from two to eight hours, and the itinerary heavily depends on the length of the tour.

If you opt for a two-hour tour, you’ll walk around the historic center of Bern and see all the top sights. But if you choose a longer tour, you will also have time to visit a museum or even two, head to Rosengarten for the best views, and even stop somewhere for lunch and drinks.

The local guide is knowledgeable and capable of conducting the tour in five languages – English, German, Italian, French, and Spanish. Your input will be taken into consideration for every aspect of the tour, from which landmarks you want to see to what type of food you want to eat, and it will be combined with insights available only to the locals in Bern.

Walking Tours in Bern

Walking Tour: Bern's Altstadt

Start: Bahnhofplatz

Finish: Swiss Parliament

Time: 2 hours

Best Times: Anny sunny day

Worst Times: Rush hours, Monday through Friday from 8 to 9am and 5 to 6pm

Start at the city's commercial core, the

1. Bahnhofplatz

In 2007 and 2008, this square, or plaza, in front of the city's main railway station, witnessed a more thorough urban renewal (new underground parking, new pedestrian zones, new landscaping) than any other location within Bern. It's now one of the showcases of urban Switzerland.

Opening onto Bahnhofplatz is the:

2. Church of the Holy Ghost

Also called the Heiliggeistkirche, this church dates from 1729 and seems out of place in such a traffic-congested area.

From the church, head east up Spittalgasse, coming first to:

3. Bagpiper Fountain

The Pfeiferbrunnen, which depicts a bagpiper atop a column and capital, was erected around 1545, presumably by Hans Gieng. In 2007, the widely publicized cost of removing (temporarily) this statue from its pedestal, and its subsequent restoration, was 500,000F.

Directly east of the fountain, at Bärenplatz, is the:

4. Prison Gate

Called the Käfigturm, this gate dates from the 1200s. It now shelters a tiny museum devoted to the cultural and business life of the city.

Continue east along:

5. Marktgasse

This is the main street of Old Town, filled with fashionable shops and florists. Many of its buildings date from the 17th century.

The street leads into one of the principal squares of Altstadt:

6. Kornhausplatz

This square is the site of the Ogre Fountain, which is a representation of a carnival figure, with a pillar and capital erected about 1544. The Kornhaus, an old granary from the 1700s, also stands on the square; today it's a restaurant and wine cellar.

7. Café des Pyrénées

The "nerve center" of Bern, Café des Pyrénées, Kornhausplatz (tel. 031/311-30-63 ), is frequented by international journalists and visitors drawn to its sidewalk terrace. This bistro cafe also attracts many expatriates. Stop in for a drink -- half a dozen types of Spanish brandy, for example -- or any of the sandwiches and pasta dishes. It's open Monday to Friday 9am to 12:30am and Saturday 8am to 5pm.

Also opening onto this square is the celebrated:

8. Clock Tower

Also called the Zytgloggeturm, the Clock Tower was the town's west gate from 1191 to 1250. Its chimes start pealing at 4 minutes before every hour. A picture postcard of this scene is the most popular souvenir of Bern.

Leaving Kornhausplatz, continue east along:

9. Kramgasse

A continuation of Marktgasse, this street contains many old houses with corner turrets and oriel windows.

Another major fountain standing on this street is the:

10. Zähringer Fountain

This fountain was a monument to the city founder, Berchtold von Zähringen. Here you can see the Bern bear, mascot of the city, along with the Zähringer coat of arms. The pillar, capital, and figure were erected in 1535 by Hans Hiltprand.

Continuing, at Kramgasse 49 you come to:

11. Albert Einstein's Home

In 1905 the famous physicist wrote his "theory of relativity" here.

The next fountain encountered on this same street is the:

12. Samson Fountain

This notable fountain is an allegory of strength, with a pillar and capital from 1527 and the figure from 1544.

Continue east along the street, which now changes its name to Gerechtigkeitsgasse. In the center of the street stands yet another famous fountain, the:

13. Justice Fountain

This fountain is an allegory of Justice, with worshiping subjects, including the pope, at her feet. The statue was erected in 1543.

Walk to the end of the street and continue across the river, crossing the Nydeggbrücke, until you reach Bern's most visited sight:

14. The Bear Pits

The Bärengraben is immediately on your right. The city of Bern is named after the bear (now its official mascot), and bears have resided in these pits since 1480.

Cross back over the bridge, and this time take the street to the left, heading west along Junkerngasse until you reach the:

15. Cathedral of St. Vincent

In Münsterplatz, the cathedral's first stone was laid in 1421, but building went on until 1573. From the tower, you'll get a panoramic view of Bern.

After leaving the cathedral, continue west along Münstergasse until you reach Theaterplatz, one of Altstadt's major squares. Continue west, following the same street, which has now changed its name to Amthausgasse. You'll then approach Bundesplatz, site of the:

16. Federal Palace

Also called the Bundeshaus (Swiss Parliament) and capped with a massive dome, it was inspired by the Italian Renaissance Cathedral in Florence. This is the seat of Swiss democracy and one of the nation's treasured symbols.

The next time you are visiting Switzerland, I highly recommend you take some time to stay in its capital city, Bern.  While there, one of the best ways to see the city is by taking part in a Bern Walking Tour.  The old city of Bern, Switzerland is very walkable with many great sights.  There are daily paid walking tours offered at the train station, though advanced booking is recommended to ensure the guide speaks English.

Self Guided Walks

If touring the city at your own pace is more your speed, here is a great self guided Bern walking tour that my wife and I took when we visited this great city.  You will see all of the major places to visit in Bern, including the Clock Tower and Bear Park!

Bern Walking Tour

This city walking tour will take you through the beautiful old city of Bern, Switzerland.  It was adapted from a walking tour found in Rick Steves’ Switzerland , which i also highly recommend for your travels through Switzerland.  You will start the tour at the train station (or Bahnhof Bern, on the left side of the below map) and weave your way through the city, ending at Bear Park (or B ä renPark on the right side of the map).  Along the way you will find many of the gems that Bern has to offer!

Walking tours are always fun. Switzerland is definitely on the bucket list. I’ll have to keep this one in mind. It looks beautiful!

Good to hear Keith! You’ll love Bern (and all of Switzerland!)

Sherri Brown

Wow!! I’ve never even thought about wanting to travel there until seeing this post. The pictures are gorgeous! Definitely a must read for anyone considering going there. Thanks for sharing!

I highly recommend it Sherri! I found that many people don’t think of Bern when they visit Switzerland, but it’s a beautiful place that really should be on everyone’s list

Dr. Lisa Thompson

This is absolutely GORGEOUS! I definitely have this on my places to visit!

Yes, Switzerland quickly became one of my favourite places after going there. Bern tends to fall under the radar for many people as we are usually familiar with Zurich or Geneva, but it is also a wonderful place to experience!

Julia Baxter

You really captured this well! Bern offered so much, including rich culture, fantastic restaurants, beautiful scenery and an unspoken professional quality.

Thanks Julia! Definitely worth the stop, though I wish we had spent even more time there (as usual)

Taiss

I really love walking around old cities. This place looks so cute and seems like there are a lot of things to see. (I can’t even try to pronounce these names, but they seem interesting!) I like that you can watch if Parliament is in session, but they also give free tours!

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved walking through the streets of Bern. It really was a great place to visit!

Carmen baguio

I love spending a pretty afternoon walking around an old city. This looks like a site-rich tour with lots of interesting architecture.

Yes, Bern is a very interesting city with lots of great pockets to explore!

Tracy

I enjoyed walking tour very much especially with a guide. I always try to join at least one walking tour in the country I visit cause I usually learn more about locals by joining such tour. 🙂

That’s so true Tracy, I enjoy them for exactly the same reason!

Iza c/o Fill My Passport

So glad to hear you enjoyed! Bern is a lovely city and definitely worth the visit

Meg

Totally neato tour! I love to wander around cities, people watch, and see the sites. Great suggestions!

with so many squares and meeting places, Bern is great for people-watching 🙂

wanderlust vegans

We like to do self guided walking tours whenever we visit a new city. It looks like there is a lot to see in Bern and would be a pretty full day walking around. Whenever we get to Bern next we’ll have to use your example.

Bern is a very walkable city, but yes it’ll quickly fill up your day if you stop and explore each location of the tour 🙂

Paula - Gone with the Wine

Switzerland is such a beautiful country and full of history. I love all the old buildings there and all the great stories. I have never been to Bern, but would certainly like to visit that city too. And what would be a better way to experience it than a walk tour.

I too love Switzerland! With so much to see and do, I often find that Bern is not usually at the top of mind for travellers, but it really is a great place to visit

Riely

Such a great detailed tour of Bern. If I ever do find myself there, i will not need a tour guide since you played it out so nicely. Switzerland has always been on my list of countries to see and so I hope to explore Bern one day soon. Such a rich history and beautiful buildings to explore.

I hope you’re able to explore Switzerland very soon as it’s a wonderful country, and Bern is a great place to add to your list

Saumya

This is a very informative post. Beautiful pictures and a good read. Thanks for sharing the information.

Walking Tour Bern, the One and Only Capital of Switzerland

Walking tour bern with all the “must-see” places.

Bern Switzerland, built around a U shaped Aare river, is a wonderful place to visit mostly due to its preserved medieval architecture. There are several landmarks one must see when discovering this city and other interesting attractions we want to mention in this article.

bern parliament and bundesplatz

When you find yourself in the city of Bern you have a couple of options of how you can explore the place . You can go for guided walking tourswhere you get a tour guide and you just follow him through the city, you can participate in one of the free walking tours. We suggest you make your own plan and itinerary. You should be in charge of your trip and decide what you want to see.

Thankfully, Bern is a city where you will not spend hours long walks to get from one landmark to another. Most of the places you can fit into your schedule in less than three hours.

So let’s start the tour of Bern . We highly recommend you start in the Altstadt or Old City. It is a picturesque place, where apart from untouched buildings you can find the large Church of the Holy Ghost also called the Heiliggeistkirche.

When you walk down the Spitalgasse street you will arrive at the Baerenplatz square which represents the expansion in the 13th century. Further on the Bundesplatz, there are the magnificent government buildings where a lot of Swiss banks are situated. One of the most famous monuments in Bern is the oldest clock tower, the Zytglogge.

Some of our other tips are visiting the Einstein House Museum and going to the Bern Cathedral. When you undertake the 344 stairs up the tower, you will get a spectacular overview of the Old City, the river,  and the mountains of the Bernese Oberland.

Other attractions

Apart from the beautiful city center, there are other places to visit in Bern too. One very symbolic place in Bern, and a popular attraction among tourists is Bern’s Bear Park, also known as Barenpark.

You can go to the bear pit and see some bears for yourself. This animal is very symbolic for the city since it is represented on city flags, buildings and fountains. Even the name Bern comes from the word bear.

Another spectacular park to visit is the Rose Garden. It is a wonderful romantic place, where you can enjoy the beauty of nature and see a picturesque view over the rooftops of buildings of Bern.

If you still feel like you didn’t see enough of the local flora, you can visit the botanical garden with its unique palm house.

For the more adventurous ones, we recommend you hike up the Gurten, which is a high mountain offering a large overview over the city, the lakes and Alps . There is a tower you can climb for free to get an even better experience.

The last tip we have to mention is connected to the rich artistic history. If you are interested in art, you have to visit the Paul Klee Center. It is a museum of art, which exposes some of the world-famous paintings such as Woman with Parasol. You can find a mixture of various styles in here combined with different kinds of media just as Paul Klee used to implement these techniques into his work.

At the time we are not providing any walking tours in Bern, but we hope our advice will help you with planning your trip. If you are interested in guided tours and think about becoming a guide yourself, please take a look at our “become a guide section” .
