Orange: A Slice-of-Life Anime With a Time Travel Twist

With its dark undertones and time travel twists, Orange takes slice-of-life to a whole new level.

Content Warning: This article contains discussions of suicide and mental health.

While the anime industry has a variety of genres to offer, the slice-of-life category is one that has consistently remained a fan favorite. With relatable storylines and a laid-back narrative, these anime are the perfect source of light entertainment. However, one slice-of-life anime takes a different approach, with a heavy-hitting narrative and a storyline that can sometimes be a bit difficult for viewers to digest.

Written and stylized by Ichigo Tanako, Orange is a slice-of-life romance anime, yet it doesn’t quite revolve around the standard light-weight high school plotlines that this genre usually tends to encompass. Rather, the anime focuses on real-life problems that plague high-school students, even touching darker themes such as depression and suicide. The series’ storyline becomes even more distinct with its time travel twist, following a more multiverse-like approach with parallel timelines.

Slice-of-Life Storyline With a Twist

Orange does a lot of things differently than its slice-of-life counterparts , yet its most distinct element is the incorporation of time travel into the plot. This is revealed in the first episode, when Naho Takamiya receives a letter from her future self, warning her about the events that will transpire. Although Naho initially does not believe the authenticity of these letters, she eventually starts to realize that the letters are actually from her future self when every single detail mentioned starts to become true.

The series even gives a scientific explanation for how the time-traveling mechanism works , yet the vague explanation wasn’t enough to satiate fans. The characters’ future-selves find a blackhole and send the letters to their past selves through that rift in reality. While the explanation was not necessary as the undefined nature of the mechanism added a bit of mystery to the anime, many fans still appreciate the author’s efforts to include an explanation for the turn of events.

It is worth mentioning that the time-traveling phenomenon in the series follows a more multiverse-like approach , as the future characters can’t change their own timeline, and instead try to change the past in a separate timeline. A linear timeline approach would have created several complications, as even a single change in the past would have drastically altered the future.

While most slice-of-life anime follows a linear storyline centered around high school drama and romance , Orange takes on much heavier themes such as suicidal ideation and depression. This is also why the characters start receiving letters from the future, as the primary purpose is to ensure their new friend, Kakeru Naruse, does not succumb to his crippling depression.

The show also explores how this affects the relationship between them, since most people are not aware of how one should deal with a loved one suffering from this mental illness . The awkward moments throughout the series feel even more attuned to reality, as dealing with such a complicated and severe issue can be daunting for people, especially for those that are closest to the person suffering from depression.

RELATED: The Morbid Slice-of-Life Series Anime Fans Forgot About

These triggering issues are exacerbated by the end of the series, when Kakeru actually tries to commit suicide, creating an extremely heavy and heart-wrenching scene. Even though he rethinks his decision last minute, adding such a distressing scene to the series was necessary in order to portray the extent of this illness, and how a simple act of love and kindness can deter a person from ending their own life.

Relatable Characters

Apart from the accurate display of the crippling effects of depression, another thing that Orange nails down is the authenticity of its characters. Unlike other slice-of-life anime that portray highschool students as flamboyant individuals, Orange gives its characters a relatable depth, from their awkward interactions to the display of shy love and affection , one can easily put themselves in that position.

The portrayal of the future characters is also an element that the anime perfectly nails, as each character’s distinct personality is clearly visible in their future-selves, just slightly more mature. Portraying mature versions of characters is always a difficult task for authors, yet Ichigo Tanako achieved this feat easily with her excellent depiction of each character’s matured future-self. Overall, the anime takes a very life-like approach to teenage relationships – be it friendships or romantic relations. Coupled with its dark themes and time traveling twist, Orange easily becomes a must-watch anime, especially for those looking for something with a touch of hard-hitting reality.

Shadow of Night

Shadow of Night

The sequel to A Discovery of Witches , the plot of Shadow of Night picks up right where the story left off: With Matthew, a vampire, and Diana, a witch, traveling back in time to Elizabethan London to search for an enchanted manuscript. You really need to read the first book before reading Shadow of Night , but the series by Deborah Harkness is a swoony magical romance.

And: It's now a TV show! ( Season one is streaming on Amazon Prime Video .)

Recursion: A Novel

Recursion: A Novel

In 2018 New York City, detective Barry Sutton fails to talk Ann out of jumping off a building. But before Ann falls to her death, she tells him she is suffering from False Memory Syndrome—a new neurological disease where people are afflicted with memories of lives they never lived. The dissonance between their present and these memories drives them to death. This is best read unspoiled, but it's undoubtedly a time travel story you haven't read before.

The Mirror

On the eve of her wedding day, Shay Garrett looks into her grandmother's antique mirror and faints. When she wakes up, she's in the same house—but in the body of her grandmother, Brandy, as a young woman in 1900. And Brandy awakens in Shay's body in the present day in 1978. It's like Freaky Friday , but with time travel to the Victorian era.

Here and Now and Then

He's stuck between two families—and ultimately, this is a time travel tale about fatherhood.

A Knight in Shining Armor

A Knight in Shining Armor

Originally published in 1989, this romance novel features a present-day heroine and a knight from the 16th century who fall in love. Per the book's description: "Abandoned by a cruel fate, lovely Dougless Montgomery lies weeping upon a cold tombstone in an English church. Suddenly, the most extraordinary man appears. It is Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck…and according to his tombstone he died in 1564. Drawn to his side by a bond so sudden and compelling it overshadows reason, Dougless knows that Nicholas is nothing less than a miracle: a man who does not seek to change her, who finds her perfect, fascinating, just as she is. What Dougless never imagined was how strong the chains are that tie them to the past…or the grand adventure that lay before them."

Ratings and Reviews

Buying only.

The app is OK. It’s mediocre and incomplete. I bought an eSIM through the website, then added that account to this app. The eSIM I added before my trip worked flawlessly upon arriving, as did my spouse’s. However, inside this app, you can buy new eSIM cards or supposedly add money to your existing account, but the basic functionality of seeing how much data and minutes you have left on your account at the moment is notably and painfully absent from this app. Two stars.

Do Not Recommend - eSIM did not work

I have an iPhone 15 pro max. Buying an eSIM and installing it was easy. However, upon arriving to Spain, the eSIM did not work! I contacted customer support many times both in English and in Spanish and they claim different issues every time. I ensure to follow the instructions and active my eSIM upon arrival to Europe and they claim it will work once I get to my final destination. Then, they claimed I never bought an eSIM. I showed them my receipt and I can see my bank statement shows the charge but they refuse to acknowledged my transaction and will not issue a refund. They keep insisting to buy a new eSIM or to “recharge” to resolve my issue. I would not recommend Orange since I’ve been left in another country without service. Their customer service is the worst to deal with. Constantly, telling me to contact different numbers and all had similar conversations with no results. I had to fall back to my primary carrier (which I didn’t want to do since they have bad international rate).

Useless app, terrible service

As others have mentioned, the app will not tell you anything about your current usage. Also, as others have mentioned, the service is awful. It was complicated to set up, and I have had a problem when an incoming call from Ireland used up all my non-Europe minutes. My plan was supposed to have free usage within Europe, where I am. Ireland is also considered one of the European countries where this plan is valid. So I asked customer service, and I’ve had two days of email back-and-forth, mostly on my end. They are not giving a straight answer why Ireland is eating up all my non-Europe minutes. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking down on my 14 day validity, with a phone I can’t use to dial outside of Europe. And even if I did speak French, there’s no way to call them. You get to speak to a robot. And the robot obviously doesn’t answer your question.

Developer Response ,

Dear pezworld, We're truly sorry to hear about your experience. Regarding the issue with incoming calls from Ireland, we understand your frustration and apologize for the inconvenience. Our technical team is checking the issue, we will get back to you. As for usage monitoring, the Orange Travel developer team is working on bringing this feature to you as soon as possible. Orange Travels apologizes again for the inconvenience.

Orange holiday europe sim card review | i test this popular tourist-focused data plan.

A hands-on review of the popular tourist-focused data plan from Orange

phones and technology

orange time travel

I recently traveled to France for two weeks so I needed fast and reliable mobile data for my phone. But I didn’t want to spend a fortune using my current provider’s International Data plan which would have cost me $120 for two weeks (for spotty service and low data limits).

After a bit of research, I came across the Orange Holiday Europe SIM prepaid data plan that looked promising so I wanted to test it out and share my thoughts.

In this Orange Holiday Europe review, I’ll talk about my personal experience with this prepaid SIM card, things to consider before buying the Orange Holiday Europe plan, general tips about prepaid data plans in France/Europe, and I’ll list some alternatives you might also want to consider.

Overview Of The Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid Data Plan

My thoughts after using the Orange Holiday Europe SIM card while traveling in Europe

The Orange Holiday Europe is a prepaid data plan designed for tourists who are visiting Europe and it gives users high-speed data in every European country. As an added bonus, Orange is the 11th largest mobile operator in the world and the 4th largest in Europe so they have a robust network and coverage.

The Orange Holiday Europe plan is also designed to be super user-friendly so there is no registration needed—simply install the SIM card into your unlocked phone and it automatically connects to a local mobile provider anywhere in Europe.

The Orange Holiday Europe plan costs around $50 and it gives you 20GB of mobile data (although sometimes they have a special where you get 30GB). The main downside is that the data is only valid for 14 days—although you’re able to re-up the plan for an additional 14 days for around $30.

The Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid plan comes as both an Orange Holiday physical SIM version and an Orange Holiday eSIM version . I highly recommend the eSIM version if your phone is eSIM compatible (the price and service are the same but you don’t have to pay for shipping and it’s delivered instantly via email).

My Experience Using The Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM

orange time travel

Ok, let’s get into my personal review of the Orange Holiday Europe plan. I’ve broken this down into multiple sections.

Purchase and Shipping

I got my Orange Holiday Europe SIM from SimOptions and had it shipped to me before I departed. I believe many Orange retail locations throughout Europe sell this same plan but that requires you to hunt down a store—I wanted data as soon as I landed.

I believe delivery was an extra $7 and it took a few days to arrive (so plan ahead).

NOTE: I highly recommend buying the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM if your phone is compatible because you get free, instant delivery via email so you save yourself some time and money. You also don’t have to remove your current provider’s SIM card (i.e. you can use your new eSIM while still using your current plan) so you can keep your old number, etc.

Installation (For The Physical SIM Card Version)

Installing the SIM card is simple.

Just pop out your old SIM and replace it with the Orange SIM card. The kit doesn’t come with a SIM extraction tool so you’ll want to bring a small paperclip so you can pop the SIM slot open.

Keep your original SIM card somewhere safe because you’ll need to reinstall it to get your old service back.

IMPORTANT: Don’t install the SIM until you’re in Europe. The service automatically activates when the SIM is installed so installing it early will count against your 14-day service period.

Orange Holiday SIM Activation

Activation was super simple.

My iPhone automatically recognized the new SIM and the service activated itself as soon as I installed the SIM card.

The entire process took about 2-3 minutes.

If your phone doesn’t automatically connect, you may have to manually enter the following APN settings into your phone:

  • Access Point Name (or APN): orange
  • User name: orange
  • Password: orange

I received a few text messages (in French) from Orange welcoming me and asking to register my card—you can ignore those if you don’t plan on using the service for more than 14 days. You can register your Orange SIM at https://travel.orange.com/en/sim-card-registration/

I believe these texts also tell you what your new French phone number is so write that down if you plan on making/receiving calls.

Speed, Coverage, and Overall Performance

On this trip, I spent most of my time in Paris, on a 3.5-hour train ride to the South of France, and in the South of France (mainly Marsailles but also on a few day trips in the region).

Overall my service was great. I got 4G/LTE just about everywhere I went and it was very rare for me to not have any signal (In fact, I can’t remember ever not having a signal).

I mostly used Google Maps/Google, Instagram, email, some Spotify streaming, and some other basic data usage. 20GB is a solid amount of data for two weeks so most people won’t hit that cap unless they’re doing a lot of video streaming (so limit your multi-hour TikTok sessions while on data).

Other Things I Liked About My Orange Holiday Europe Plan

First, Orange is a huge company so they have a great network with extensive EU-wide coverage.

And unlike a lot of data plans, the Orange Holiday Europe plan allows data tethering so I could use my phone as a hotspot for my laptop. This came in handy when my Airbnb’s wifi stopped working and when I wanted to send a few emails/surf the web while I was on the train.

Additionally, unlike a lot of prepaid data plans, the Orange Holiday Europe plan comes with a French phone number so users can make/receive phone calls and texts (you get unlimited calls and texts in Europe and 120 minutes of worldwide calling plus worldwide 1k texts). This can come in handy if you need to make restaurant reservations or if you need to call your Airbnb host, hotel, etc.

I also liked the convenience of pre-purchasing the plan so I didn’t have to waste time finding an Orange store and dealing with salespeople (I’d rather spend my time finding the best croissants).

Considerations Before Buying The Orange Holiday Europe SIM

Buying the Orange Holiday Europe SIM plan is more expensive than waiting to buy a local SIM card once you arrive in Europe. For reference, you’ll typically pay about $30 for 20GB of data via a local SIM card.

On the other hand, pre-buying Orange Holiday Europe plans means you’ll have data as soon as you land and you won’t have to waste time trying to track down a SIM card retailer. Personally, I don’t mind paying a little extra for the convenience.

However, if you’re traveling for more than a few weeks then you’re probably better off buying a local SIM card since I believe you can only use this card for a max of 28 days.

Who Should and Shouldn’t Buy The Orange Holiday Europe Plan

Not sure if the Orange Holiday Europe plan is for you? Maybe this will help:

Who Should Buy The Orange Holiday Europe Plan

  • Travelers Who Value Convenience: Just activate the plan and you’re online. It’s super easy. No need to find a mobile retailer, no need to speak to anyone, no need to register your SIM or submit your passport, no need to be without data, etc.

Who Shouldn’t Buy The Orange Holiday Europe Plan

  • Ultra-Budget Travelers: If you’re on a super tight budget then you can find other plans that are cheaper if you don’t mind spending time to track them down. You might also want to consider the cheaper Orange Holiday Zen SIM and Orange Holiday Zen eSIM plans that are $30 and have 10-15GB of data.
  • Long-Term Travelers: It ends up being quite a bit cheaper to buy a local SIM card if you’re traveling for more than around three to four weeks.
  • Minimal Data Users: Don’t need 20+ GB of data? Then look at the cheaper Orange Holiday Zen SIM and Orange Holiday Zen eSIM plans that are $30 for 10-15GB of data.

Orange Holiday Europe SIM Alternatives

Ok, let’s take a look at a few other SIM and SIM card options you might want to check out:

ORANGE HOLIDAY ZEN ESIM: $29.90

Orange Holiday Zen eSIM | Best eSIM For Visiting Europe

  • Price:  $29.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  15GB
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 30 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 200 outside of Europe.
  • Credit validity:  14 day
  • Data tethering allowed
  • Usable on any device (phones, tablets, hotspots…)
  • This eSIM card comes with a French phone number

The Orange Holiday Zen plan is very similar to the Orange Holiday Europe plan but it has less data and it’s cheaper. This is a great option for users who don’t use a lot of data.

O2 GO CARD ESIM: $24.90

orange time travel

  • Price:  $24.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  10GB
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Includes $2 of credit to make calls within Europe
  • Texts/SMS:  Includes $2 of credit to send/receive texts within Europe
  • Credit validity:  30 day
  • This eSIM card comes with a Czech phone number

The O2 Go Card Plan is on the O2 mobile network (the largest mobile network in the UK) so the service quality will be good.

And while it’s slightly cheaper than the Orange Holiday Zen plan, you get less mobile data and you don’t get the benefit of any international calls/texts—you also get a very limited amount of EU calls/texts.

SMART COMFORT X ESIM: $17.90

orange time travel

  • Price:  $17.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  5GB
  • Calls:  None
  • Texts/SMS:  None
  • Credit validity:  30 day

The Smart Comfort X eSIM is a budget data-only eSIM plan option that gives you 5GB of data but no calls or texts (you can still send iMessage if you’re sending messages between iPhones and make calls/texts via WhatsApp, etc).

Smart Comfort X eSIM is also what’s considered an “international eSIM” so it’s not backed by a specific data provider (i.e Orange, O2, etc.). That means it will connect to a specific partner provider in each country—for example, France (Bouygues), Germany (O2), Italy (WIND), Spain (Telefonica), etc.

Because of its limited data limits, the Smart Comfort X eSIM plan is best for light data users.

THREE UK PAYG AIO15

Three UK is another large European mobile carrier and their  PAYG AIO15  plan is a good value for people who don’t need the 20GB offered by the Orange Holiday Europe plan. I like how the plan has a validity period of 30 days so it’s good for longer trips.

Plan Specs:

  • PRICE:  $30
  • DATA:  10GB
  • CALLS:  Unlimted in Europe
  • TEXT:  Unlimted in Europe
  • USED AS A MOBILE HOTSPOT?:  No
  • CREDIT VALID FOR:  30 Days

BOUYGUES TELECOM VACATION PREPAID PLAN

The  Bouygues Telecom Vacation Prepaid Plan  is very similar to the Orange Holiday Zen but the Bouygues plan must be activated in France—so that’s a huge drawback if France isn’t your first destination.

  • PRICE:  $50
  • DATA:  20GB
  • USED AS MOBILE HOTSPOT?:  NO
  • Must be activated in France but can be used anywhere in the EU.

Note:  SimOptions.com  has other cards for sale but these are the best options/deals.

We realize that illness and other reasons arise that may make it impossible for you to travel. For this reason, a travel protection policy (which includes cancellation insurance) through a third party is available and it’s highly recommended that you purchase this at the same time you make your initial tour payment. Those who have purchased travel protection and must cancel for a covered reason, will be reimbursed by the travel protection company the balance of any non-refunded funds (minus the travel protection premium). Regardless of the reason, cancellations, credits, and transfers of confirmed bookings result in a costly process of e-mails, letters, phone calls, adjustments, refunds, and penalties/fees assessed by our travel suppliers. Therefore, the below cancellation policies and fees are in place. Note that the below fees are per person and apply if you choose NOT to purchase travel protection or if you cancel for a non-covered reason.

Single-Day Tour Cancellations

  • If you cancel 30 or more days prior to the departure date, you may receive a credit minus a $10 p.p. administrative fee* or a refund minus a $25 p.p. administrative fee*.

  • In addition to the administrative fee, all non-recoverable or non-transferable fees made to our suppliers on your behalf (for tickets, etc.) will be retained.
  • Refund provisions vary from tour to tour and there are exceptions to the above policy and some tours (including those tours involving theatre tickets or high-security access) may have different or additional restrictions.

Multi-Day Tour Cancellations

  • If you cancel prior to our established balance payment deadline (generally 60-90 days depending on the tour) you may receive a credit minus a $50 p.p. administrative fee* or a refund minus a $75 p.p. administrative fee*.
  • If you cancel after our established balance payment deadline (generally 60-90 days depending on the tour) you may receive a credit (minus $75 p.p.*) or a refund (minus $125 p.p.*).

  • If you cancel within 15 days of departure, you may receive a credit (minus $250 p.p.*) or a refund (minus $500 p.p.*) ONLY if your space can be resold from a waitlist.
  • In addition to the administrative fee, all non-recoverable or non-transferable fees made to our suppliers on your behalf (for airfare, tickets, lodging, services, etc.) will be retained.

A WEALTH OF HERITAGE -- AND NATURE

The easternmost town in Texas combines a colorful history with world-class natural, cultural and historical attractions. Located near the Louisiana border, Orange was a stopping place for outlaws and renegades crossing the Sabine River into Texas. Established in 1846, the town changed its name several times before selecting one that one that stuck, honoring the wild orange groves along the riverbanks. Orange enjoyed a Golden Age, beginning in the late 19 th Century, with a lumber-fueled economy. Magnates of that industry and their descendants built or funded major local heritage sites. For example, the W. H. Stark House is the restored 1894 residence of the philanthropists William Henry Stark and Miriam M. Lutcher Stark, who lived there until 1936. The residence affords visitors a glimpse of the lifestyle of this wealthy Southeast Texas family—their original furnishings, antique rugs, textiles, silver, cut glass and porcelain. The Stark Museum of Art houses an acclaimed collection of 19 th and 20 th Century Western American art and artifacts and Native American art. Among the artists represented are John James Audubon, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington and Charles Russell.

To experience the natural beauty of Southeast Texas, visit Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. Located on 252 acres in the heart of Orange, the gardens include displays of more than 300 plant species in a series of theme-based “rooms.” The adjacent bird blind provides views of nesting species in the heronry. In the Nature Center, children enjoy hands-on exhibits. There’s also a laboratory, and outdoor classrooms located deep in the cypress swamp. The mission of this wondrous heritage site is simple: “Be kind to your world.”
