A Blog About Portugal

Giraffes at Badoca Safari Park

in Travel · 25 September, 2016

Going on Safari in… Portugal?

I know my blog has a tendency to rave about Portugal and perhaps my readers will wonder whether I exaggerate some of the posts… especially when they read titles about safaris in Portugal. But I couldn’t make this one up if I wanted to! You can actually go on a safari in the Alentejo region at a place called Badoca Safari Park. Excited yet? Read on.

Bird at Badoca Safari Park

I’m embarrassed that I only recently discovered Badoca Safari Park, even though it’s been around for 17 years and only a 1.5 hour drive from Lisbon. But what an incredible place to visit! Spread out over 90 hectares, this wildlife refuge is home to over 75 different species of animals. It’s a fun and educational day for humans of all ages.

Warthog at Badoca Safari Park

The park was named after Badoca, the first giraffe to come to the park in 1999, and her tall skeleton welcomes you as you enter. Aside from the main safari attraction, there are lots of activities to enjoy at Badoca Park. There’s a Lemur Interaction show, Birds of Prey presentation, Feeding the Lemurs show, and even an “African river” rafting activity. (Obviously, you’re not in a real African river, although the temperatures in the Alentejo will certainly fool you!)

Lemurs at Badoca Safari Park

The Birds of Prey presentation is a really fun and exciting opportunity to get up close and personal with some amazing birds and to find out each species’ unique super power. The Feeding of the Lemurs is like watching those internet videos of lemurs eating grapes… only infinitely better, because it’s happening right in front of you and the presenter is telling you all about these beautiful creatures.

Birds of prey at Badoca Safari Park

The safari itself is a wonderful opportunity to watch species behave the way they do in their natural habitat. Warthogs, zebras, ostriches, African buffalo, springbok, axis deer, antelope, wildebeest, oryx and even Bengal tigers are all residents of the park, which you can spot on the safari. You do get a little dusty on the ride, but it’s so worth it for the amazing wildlife you see. The guides are very friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to visit the Primate Islands or the Macaw Forest, but I plan to do that, along with the rafting, on my next visit.

So just when you thought Portugal was all castles, food, beaches and vineyards, you discover that you can also go on safari there. Pretty surprising, right? If you haven’t been to Badoca Safari Park yet, put it on your to-do list. If you have, please let me know what you liked best about it in the comments section below.

Here is the full story on our Portugal tours through Viator. A group of 12 went to Portugal and booked various tours through Viator. The first tour to Sintra, Regaleira and Pena Palace went great...had a fantastic tour guide who stayed with us the entire time. The next tour was a Douro River Boat Trip which was fun, but about 2 hours too long...also the "wine tasting" event was very poor...one small glass of Port and that was it! The Obidos, Nazare, Batalha & Fatima tour was ok - but the tour guide was a joke. She spoke a little on the bus and then when we got to the places, she did not get off the bus to guide us...we were on our own to figure things out. The final tour was supposed to be the Templar Knights...Viator cancelled on us the night before we were to fly out. It took our travel agent HOURS to find another tour only for the second tour to be canceled on us the day before the tour. Viator did not care about it at all. Very disappointing. Sonia our driver and tour guide for both tours was so kind, caring, helpful, professional and knowledgeable. She had a warm engaging personality. We visited the amazing Almoroul Templar Castle, Tomar town centre, Church of St. John, Synagogue, Christ convent (a must see on your itinerary) and Church of St. Mary. Sonia had all the tours timed to perfection and everything was so well organised with no time being wasted. We loved sharing our time with Sonia and we have wonderful memories forever of the beautiful sights and having Sonia's company was an added bonus. We used Viator to get a shuttle from our apartment to Lisbon airport in July and we had a great experience. But for this operator, we booked a reservation and paid at least one week in advance, and kept requesting to confirm a pick up location as we particularly needed to be picked up in front of our apartment since we had several heavy luggages. They did not confirm until the day before for 6:30am pick up, and they insisted that their driver could not come to our apartment despite the fact that another driver could in July. And they still charged us. My understanding is that the operator does not have a certain license when they could not come into some streets. Unless you are staying at hotel on the big street, I would recommend not using this operator. Read more Written 21 September 2022

The zoo includes botanical gardens with various plants and trees. This offers a relaxing environment for visitors to explore.

The grove is surrounded by Mediterranean flora, olive trees, oaks, and aromatic plants to make the animals feel a home.

At the Temple of the Primates, you can see Chimpanzees, Gorillas Orangutans.

This attraction is built outdoors, keeping in mind the suitable habitat for primates, and this is why trees, waterfalls, lakes, vegetation, and wood decks are installed for the animals to climb.

Come to the Valley of the Tigers and see tigers walking on platforms, quenching thirst in ponds, and resting on rocks.

This attraction is home to two species of tigers- the Sumatran tiger and the Siberian tiger.

You will learn the threats faced by tigers and how they are moving toward the verge of extinction.

Savana MEO transports you to the African Savana, where you see giant Elephants, beautiful Giraffes, water-loving Hippos, and spiral-horned antelope called Nyalas.

The dramatic landscape is complemented by the quaint lighthouse from 1772 that still guides boasts along the coast of Portugal. Cabo da Roca is the ideal spot for visitors to take in the beauty of Portugal’s nature and unique landscapes. The best time to visit is at sunset when glowing orange light is cast over the sea.

Tapada Nacional de Mafra is a park covering 800 hectares of land near Lisbon. It was built under the rule of King João V for the purpose of the king’s leisure. He would go there to hunt for sport, but today it’s home to wild animals that are left unharmed by humans, including foxes, squirrels, rabbits, goats, deer, and wild boars. There are also many bird species, including eagles, owls, and falcons, here, so bird watching is a great pastime when visiting.

Tapada Nacional de Mafra is just 42 km from Lisbon's city center and is a fun destination for all ages. On a day trip from the city, travelers can participate in walking tours, go mountain biking, horseback riding, or crossbow shooting.

6 Beautiful Beaches Of Arrábida and Sesimbra

Lisbon is known for its picturesque walking streets , iconic yellow trams, and delicious cuisine. What most travelers don’t realize is that there are also some stunning beaches right near the city center. These beaches are found on the coastline south of Lisbon, near Setúbal, and are some of the best to visit in the entire country. The reserve is in proximity to Lisbon’s city center and is one of the largest wetlands in all of Portugal. There are plenty of hiking trails to explore here, including the Lagoa Principal, Lagoa Rosa, and the Lagoa Grande.

There are stilts, spotted redshanks, common greenshanks, pied avocets, and plenty more unique bird species to observe in their natural habitats on the reserve. THIS JOURNEY IS FOR…

Those who want to “squeeze all the juice” out of Sintra. Drink up the best of the UNESCO World Heritage area and Sintra-Cascais Natural Park in just one day.

Climb aboard our vintage Portuguese 4x4s and tackle the best of the Sintra region . In just one day you’ll explore the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira and eat a traditional Portuguese lunch (with wine, of course) before cruising off-road through Sintra’s lush forests, to emerge at the seaside cliffs of mainland Europe’s westernmost point, Cabo da Roca.

In the cooler months we keep the roof on, turn the music up, splash through puddles of mud as we swerve past house-sized boulders, pine forests and giant ferns.

Our adventures are about the journey , not just the destination. This is why we love to go off-road, snap Polaroid pictures at the coast, play epic tunes all day long and give you the chance to taste Sintra’s traditional sweet “travesseiro” pastry and homemade “ginja” liqueur.

We want you to finish your day feeling like you really know the place. Join us for an unforgettable day of adventure, laughs and local legends.

Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa – Lisbon’s City Zoo

When you’re enjoying a city break in Lisbon with the family, be sure not to miss a day at the Lisbon Zoo: Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa .

Dit bericht bekijken op Instagram Een bericht gedeeld door We ❤️ Lisbon | Portugal (@weheartlisbon) op 9 Aug 2018 om 9:50 (PDT)

This is definitely one of the most beautiful zoos we have ever seen. It’s a very big place but it doesn’t feel like it. Filled with beautiful and often large animal houses, this city zoo is also very green with lots of trees, plants and flowers. Sometimes it’s like walking in an actual jungle!

Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa is only 15 minutes away by public transport from Rossio square – which makes a visit to this beautiful zoo very easy to fit in to your planning. But beware: you can easily spend a whole day is this big zoo.

Animax When you enter the gates of the park there is an entertainment area called Animax. n addition to the many different eateries here, from McDonald’s to typical Portuguese restaurants, there are also some nice attractions for children such as the bouncy castle ( 2 euros for 10 minutes and only for 3+ years) and a carousel. This part of the park is still outside the paid area, so you can visit here anytime. When you buy your ticket to the Zoo, ask for a stamp so you can easily walk in and out as you like. Nickelodeon

In 2018, the children’s television channel celebrated its 13th birthday in Portugal. They decided to celebrate this fact together with Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa.

Dierentuin Lissabon Nickelodeon

Just in front of the ticket office there’s a large inflated cushion with the name of the TV channel on it. And once you’re in the zoo itself there are loads of fun activities for children.

When you visit the show in Dolphin Bay, a number of characters from the Nickelodeon series Paw Patrol and Ninja Turtles welcome you and of course it’s no problem to have your picture taken with them!

dierentuin lissabon sponsoring nick jr

n front of the tiger residence you’ll find an inflatable pineapple (bonus points if you know what show that is from). Get your Nickelodeon passport here and go on a hunt for the places where – after having answered a question – you get a stamp in your passport in a number of animal enclosures (hints are found in the passport). If you’re a loyal nickelodeon viewer then the questions won’t be that difficult.

Once you get all stamps are in your passport, go to the inflatable pineapple again and show the passport to the staff. As a reward you’ll get a surprise. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the stamps, we only had 3 in our passport and still walked away with a nice surprise.

We think it’s a clever move from Nickelodeon to celebrate their birthday at the zoo. Since our visit to Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa Paw Patrol has been on tv regularly again at our house!

Dolphin show

Three times a day (at 11AM, 3PM and 5PM) you can enjoy the dolphin show in the area called Dolphin Bay. If you want to start your day cheerful, make sure you are ready at 11AM at the large pool. The audience is prepared for the dolphin show with cheerful music and characters from Paw Patrol and the Ninja Turtles.

dolfijnenshow dierentuin Lissabon

With 2 dolphins and 2 supervisors they put on a great and entertaining 60 minute show. With two small kids (0 and 3 years at the time), for us the show lasted just a little too long so we left after about 40 minutes.

If you take a stroller to the zoo, the dolphin show is the only time you have to store it in a (guarded) space.

The Lisbon Zoo is one of the oldest Zoos in Europe, it opened its doors in 1884. The mild climate in Portugal is great for most animals. It boasts almost 2000 animals of no less than 300 different species.

dierentuin Lissabon Flamingo

The atmosphere in the zoo is very relaxed: even though more than 800,000 people visit this park each year, you will not notice the crowds at all.We were there on a Saturday, together with many scouting clubs, whole families and lots of couples and we never ever felt it was too much.

Dierentuin Lisabon nijlpaard

What makes it so easy going is the fact that there are the many benches and seats at the beautiful animal houses.

Besides a relaxing visit to the zoo, it also offers an educational program. You will always find many children doing a tour of the Zoo.

Dierentuin Lissabon Giraffe

What we noticed during our visit is that many visitors feed the animals, even though there are signs everywhere that the animals are not to be fed. With the knowledge that a baby giraffe died (at the end of May in 2018 (because a visitor was feeding the giraffe and the giraffe fell into the safety ditch and died) you would think that people would be extra cautious and / or more supervisors would be walking around. Unfortunately, neither is the case.

Classy sponsoring

Just like in many zoos around the globe, the majority of animal stays are sponsored here in Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa. The way it’s done is slightly more clever than just having a placard with a company name, as it is done in most other places.

Dierentuin Lissabon sponsoring

There is always a natural match between an animal stay and the company sponsoring them. For example, the elephants are sponsored by the supermarket chain Jumbo (in Portugal the Jumbo supermarket has a red elephant in their logo).

dierentuin lissabon sponsoring olifanten

Lidl has been awarded for having the best fruit and vegetable selection in Portugal for a number of years in a row now, so they’re sponsoring a petting zoo where you can find a vegetable garden and an explanation about growing fruit and vegetables.

dierentuin lissabon moestuin lidl

Food and drinks

It is allowed to bring your own food and drinks at the zoo. At Bosque Encanto (the Enchanted Forest) there are many picnic tables that you can use.

dierentuin lissabon picknick

And while the whole zoo is super child friendly, in this part of the zoo there is special attention to children, so there are children’s toilets and picnic tables here for the little ones.

Activities at the zoo

Besides the dolphin show and walking around the zoo, there are also many other activities to do. For example there’s a neat bird show, you can enjoy the feeding of the pelicans, catch a train that runs through the park (for a fee) and best of all, there’s a cable car driving through the place. What a great way to admire the zoo from above. You can find more information on the website of the zoo .

Going by car

If you stay outside Lisbon and you want to come to the zoo by car, it is best to park in the parking garage in front of the entrance in Parking garage EMpark Sete Rios . The parking garage looks nice with tiles that refer to the zoo.

Dierentuin Lissabon parkeren

Tip from us: take contact money in coins to pay the parking garage. The machines are not equipped with a pin option and the service counter can not exchange tickets for the parking meter. If you want to change, they advise you to go back to the zoo (Animax). Super awkward of course if you have exhausted children in the back seat.

Exploring Lisbon's parks is a great introduction to the city's history and people © Matt Munro / Lonely Planet

With the sun shining brightly most of the year in Lisbon, public gardens, parks and squares are the place to be for people-watching and getting into the rhythm of the Portuguese capital.

From grand cobblestoned plazas and gated romantic gardens to iconic historic locations and beautiful spots for contemporary architecture, these are the best parks in Lisbon .

Park in Lisbon, Portugal

Monsanto Forest Park

Best park for walking and family picnics

The largest green area in the city, Monsanto Forest Park is a popular weekend go-to for families with young children. The park has hiking trails, playgrounds, a skatepark and picnic areas with ready-to-use grills, and it’s easy to access by bus or car, with plenty of free parking spaces. If you’re up for a hike, take the Corredor Verde de Monsanto walking path that starts at Parque Eduardo VII in central Lisbon. Idealized by landscape architect Ribeiro Telles as a way to bring nature closer to the city, the 1.6-mile path takes walkers through some of Lisbon’s lovely parks and viewpoints.

Jardim Botânico

Best park for budding green thumbs

Jardim Botânico , Lisbon’s botanical garden, started as a scientific project in the 19th century to support students at the on-site university, now the Museum of Natural History. With more than 2000 species of trees and plants from all over the world, visitors can feel they’ve traveled to faraway destinations without leaving the city. Established as an educational garden from the start, Jardim Botânico often hosts guided tours and environment-conscious activities for kids.

Night view of The Nations Park in Lisbon

Parque das Nações

Best park for contemporary architecture

After Expo 1998 wrapped up, the grounds of the world exposition became Lisbon’s first urban park. Parque das Nações also doubles as the city’s newest district. It’s mostly known for its contemporary architecture landmarks such as the aquarium Oceanário de Lisboa , Pavilhão de Portugal designed by renowned Portuguese architect Siza Vieira, Santiago Calatrava’s Oriente train station and the UFO-shaped Altice Arena , a venue for big events and concerts. Set aside at least one morning to properly explore the park on foot or view it from the top by riding the cable car.

Jardim Gulbenkian

Best park for relaxing with a book or your favorite podcast

A project by Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, an icon of Portuguese modernist landscape architecture in the 1960s, the gardens at the Gulbenkian Foundation are a work of art. The location of each tree, plant, statue and cement bench were meticulously planned and placed there to pay tribute to a style that became known as Portuguese Garden. Jardim Gulbenkian is an urban haven of shaded and isolated nooks, water streams and a lake, grassy clearings, an outdoor amphitheater and cafes. It’s the perfect place to get lost in a book or the latest episode of your favorite podcast, before or after perusing the art collections at the foundation’s two museums: Museu Calouste Gulbenkian and Centro de Arte Moderna .

Bicycle in Lisbon park

Parque Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles

Best park for outdoor sports and family outings

Named after one of the landscape architects behind the Jardim Gulbenkian project, Parque Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles is the newest urban park in Lisbon. The old entanglement of roads and heavy traffic once known as Praça de Espanha is being replaced with lakes and streams, large clearings dotted with trees, children’s playgrounds, bike-sharing stations, and biking and walking paths that connect Gulbenkian to Corredor Verde de Monsanto. Construction is still underway, but some of the grassy clearings and bike paths are now open and ready to welcome park-goers. The project is expected to be completed by early 2022.

Parque Eduardo VII

Best park for outdoor events

The manicured modernist Parque Eduardo VII is the chosen spot for some of the city’s big outdoor gatherings, including Lisbon’s Book Fair every spring, music events throughout the year and Wonderland Lisboa every Christmas. It’s more of a passing-through than a stay-in park, unless you visit Estufa Fria, the on-site greenhouse of exotic and tropical plants. Don’t miss the view from the north side of the park, an often-overlooked viewpoint and a unique spot to see part of Lisbon’s downtown area all the way down to the river.

Cafe Brasileira, Chiado

Largo do Carmo

Best park for old Lisbon charm and history buffs

Largo do Carmo, a small square in the Chiado quarter, was inundated by a sea of locals on April 25, 1974 when a military coup overthrew the four-decade-long conservative dictatorship, thus becoming the symbolic location of the beginning of Portugal’s democracy. In addition to being the center stage of that historical event, Largo do Carmo is also known for its old Lisbon charm of black-and-white cobblestones and the Baroque fountain, the purple shade of blooming Brazilian rosewood trees in spring, and the post-1755 earthquake ruins of Convento do Carmo nearby.

Jardim da Estrela

Best park for romantic walks

Inspired by English gardens, Jardim da Estrela is a gated park with ponds, resident ducks that love being hand fed, kiosks-turned-cafes and the wrought-iron bandstand that's the garden's trademark image. Take in this classic romantic setting on a long walk around the park, followed by a visit to the baroque church Basílica da Estrela across the street and a ride on the iconic tram 28E .

Rossio Fontain in Praca Dom Pedro IV, Rossio

Best park for people watching

Although it’s officially called Praça Dom Pedro IV, Lisbon locals know this two-fountain square with its distinct small-stone calçada Portuguesa pavement as Rossio . Located in the busy downtown quarter of Baixa among restaurants, cafes and shops, and steps away from Lisbon’s main theaters, it’s the ideal spot for people watching in the early morning as commuters leaving the nearby Rossio train station cross the square on their way to work.

Ribeira das Naus

Best park for sunbathing and relaxing by the river

Ribeira das Naus, the riverside street that connects Praça do Comércio to Cais do Sodré, has large patches of grass on one side, where the scarcity of trees is an invitation to lay down a blanket or a towel and soak up the sun. For those who prefer a different setting, relax with a drink on one of the lounge chairs near the kiosk cafe Quiosque Ribeira das Naus .

Campo das Cebolas

Best park near Lisbon’s big sights

Nestled between the Tagus River and the Alfama neighborhood, Campo das Cebolas is within walking distance of many of Lisbon’s must-see landmarks, including Sé de Lisboa , Fundação José Saramago , Castelo de São Jorge and Museu do Fado . This grassy park with a kids’ playground sits atop an underground parking lot. During construction, close to 60 tons of archeological remains were found, including 16th-century pieces of clothing and gold coins and a well-preserved 19th-century boat used for shipping cargo across the river.

safari park lisbon

According to a report by Publituris, the company Africa Land – Turismo e Natureza, Lda. intends to invest around €2 million in the creation of a zoological park and a five-star hotel in the municipality of Almodôvar (district of Beja).

The Africa Safari Park, planned for Herdade da Camacha, about seven kilometres from the town of Almodôvar, includes, according to the Environmental Impact Study (EIA), in public consultation until February 2, a 141.9 hectare zoological park, which will feature “animals typical of the African savannah”.

Among these, the promoters hope to have lions, tigers, Iberian lynx, giraffes, impalas, cheetahs and zebras, “21 specimens of carnivores and 65 specimens of herbivores”.

“As these animals will be acquired from certified zoos in the European Community, they will not need authorisation licenses”, reveals the company.

The other project planned for Herdade da Camacha is the Africa Safari Lodge, a five-star hotel whose construction has already begun.

The unit will initially consist of bungalows and will have a capacity for 72 beds, as well as a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, spa, and a room for events and conferences.

A veterinary clinic will also be created for the treatment of animals for “scientific and research activities”, a warehouse for food and feed and a quarantine building for animals, “in order to prevent the spread of diseases”.

The promoting company says it estimates the creation of "about 60 new jobs" through the project, which will have "positive effects" on the economy of the Alentejo municipality.

If you want to see African animals in the wild then go to Africa. Its not far away.

By Eric B from Algarve on 11 Jan 2022, 09:25

I agree, if you want to see African animals come to Africa. I'd hate to see them confined in small areas, I'm used to seeing them free in the open. Very sad.

By Dylan from Other on 11 Jan 2022, 19:25

If you want to see rare endangered wildlife then leave the Alentejo grasslands alone!!

By Nigel Genn from Algarve on 11 Jan 2022, 20:49

Love the idea, can't wait to see it come to fruition. Good of them to have a vet on site as well. I will definitely support the place.

By Jaco Booysen from Lisbon on 12 Jan 2022, 10:23

So the Alentejo grasslands are now perfect for animals from the African savannah? Climate change in action folks.

By Dirk Scott from Lisbon on 12 Jan 2022, 12:10

I think this is a great idea and great for tourists and locals. The animals are already in Zoo's across Europe and not being taken from the planes of Africa.

By Paul from Algarve on 12 Jan 2022, 14:38

The world is going wrong with safari parks where non Indemic animals are brought in. There are so many animals within the Iberian Peninsula and others that could be returned to make a park more identifiable to the general public of Portugal. It is not necessary to bring in African and non indigenous Peninsula mammals and plants to make the country more interesting. Let's be fair with what we have and what has been lost and build something interesting for the population to visit, to understand and to educate.

By Graham Dampier from Beiras on 12 Jan 2022, 19:02

Simply said, Portugal as a country is required to demonstrate 100% care & commitment to such diversity in the animal kingdom. It distresses me as there is no fast tracking of care for the canine segment let alone the uniqueness of safari animals! It will be a sad day when & IF this should ever happen!
