Walk off the Earth (formed in 2006) is a Canadian indie and alternative rock group, known for their high-praised covers songs, notably Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know”, hailing from Burlington, Ontario, Canada.

Comprised of talented multi-instrumentalists Ryan Marshall, Mike Taylor, Gianni Luminati, Joel Cassady, and Sarah Nicole Blackwood, Walk off the Earth formed in 2006. Since then the band has become popular the world over for their elaborate reinvention of existing songs, where the group’s members will often play the same instrument at the same time or swap mid song. The band made their debut full-length release in 2007 with the album “Smooth Like Stone on a Beach”. Released by SlapDash Records the album is a far more reggae-inspired album than Walk off the Earth subsequent releases, and features a cover of Rage Against the Machine’s “People of the Sun”.

The group’s sophomore album “My Rock” was released in 2010, however it wasn’t until Walk of the Earth began covering songs that they really made their mark on the music industry. Producing a steady stream of innovative covers by the likes of The Gregory Brothers, Adele and B.o.B the group began uploading the fruits of their efforts to YouTube, which proved highly popular amongst listeners. Walk off the Earth subsequently crafted a cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” – with five members negotiating a single guitar – which has subsequently reached over 165 million views on YouTube. The success of the single led the group to sign with Columbia Records in February 2012, and perform on the Ellen Degeneres show shortly afterwards.

Walk off the Earth’s major-label debut “R.E.V.O” (Realize Every Victory Outright) was released in early 2013. Featuring 10 original compositions along with the Gotye cover, the album charted at No. 7 in Canada and spawned the singles “Red Hands”, “Gang of Rhythm”, and “Shake It Off”. Following the release, the group embarked on a worldwide tour including shows in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, and went on to win four awards at the Canadian Radio Music Awards.

Live reviews

Canadian alt-rock outfit Walk Off The Earth are very much a great example of the influence of social media on the modern music scene. Following on from the Myspace boom of the mid-00's, later on Youtube became the platform to discover new musicians and it is thanks to the video sharing platform that the group gained global notoriety.

Their irresistible ska/indie tones when covering Gotye's storming hit 'Somebody That I Used To Know' elevated them into the public eye and since then their career has gone from strength to strength. As they broke out on the merits of their live performance, there is no wonder that their show is of an extremely high quality already. They expertly blend their own alternative/reggae tracks from the debut album and intersect them with a variety of covers ranging from B.O.B to Rage Against The Machine. The audience is ready to singalong in force during a reworking of Adele 'Someone Like You'. It is of course the Gotye cover that is reserved for the encore and once again demonstrates the brilliant harmonies that first brought the group to attention, it will be exciting to see where these musicians go next.

Walk Off the Earth shot up the fame ladder with their youtube successes, covering many popular songs with their own unique twists. Probably their most famous is their cover of "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye with 5 people playing one guitar simultaneously. But they’ve risen out of this youtube-dom into a real band. They are extremely talented musicians as well as truly down to earth people. Their show is all about having a good time, and you won’t be disappointed. The WotE crew consists of about 5 members who jump from instrument to instrument. You’ll see ukuleles, guitars, piano, drums of all sorts, xylophones - you name it. Even songs you haven’t heard before will get caught in your head and you’ll be singing along with the crowd to jams like "Red Hands" and "Summer Vibe." "Summer Vibe" was especially pertinent at the show I went with temps in the 90s, but Walk off the Earth still made it a cool show. Balloons sent into the crowd, pictures with fans… these guys just rock! They love playing their instruments for people and it shows. If they come around again, I’m there. This is a show I can’t miss.

We had 6 th row tickets. Paid a higher ticket price. Noted first 5 rows had no one in them. We got there at 7 for 730 start. At 8 noticed heaps of people

Suddenly rushing for seats at front. Looked around and staff were moving people from far back to front

People who had paid extra ( a lot extra) were then trying to argue about the swap. We moved up one row but we’re blocked by view. Didn’t see any of the stage at all.

People around us were all very upset and angry. Right thing to do would have been to move up people in first rows that had people in them

And then move people up in order. Wouldn’t have taken much effort and stopped a lot of upset

Got to say I was disappointed in the show. Glad I went but have no desire to see them again. Found the interplay between the band kitsch and false. And the constant Melbourne your the best concert so far was just annoying. Sad that my expectations were diff from what happened however for those who love the band u will have a great time.

Absolutely the best show I've been too! My 8 year old Brayden joined me backstage to meet the band. He was so happy to meet WOTE, and so was I. This band means the world to myself and my family. To kick off our wedding reception, my wife and I walked into REVO. To meet them, was an absolute dream for both of us, and my son has an experience he will truly never forget! Thank you so much to the band for being so great! He also thinks we are famous cause we made it waiting in line for our meet and greet on the bands snapchat video! I'm happy like a room without a roof!

Fantastic show! WOTE, thanks for coming to Houston! When are you coming back. Don’t wait 6 years to return! All of their YouTube videos come to life. Standing outside waiting to enter the show, I turned around to notice a group walk inches by me. It was Sarah in her pigtails, the G ( with her braided hair, and several others going into the House of Blues restaurant, I assume to grab a bite to eat before the show. If only I had seen them coming, I would have thanked them for being here.

Instrument-tossing, kazoo-playing, engaging band with dedicated fans! WOTE put on another great show last night and allowed my boyfriend to propose on stage during the concert. I can't express enough how great this band is. They are extremely talented musicians. We brought 10 of our closest friends and family, who have never seen them live, and they all thought the show was great.

Fantastic show great energy and music. Loved it!

I really appreciate that WOTE came this far south to Charlotte for this show. Please COME BACK!

Bad Idea - Tessa Violet and Susan Bolland were a great lead group. Susan's drumming was impressive and Tessa's vocals were amazing. I'd love to see them again.

FAN FREAKEN TASTIC!!!

Kept ever person entertained and very interactive. Can't wait to see them again!! Such great stage presentation and atmosphere. Loved the different performances and the banners were great!

Unfortunate circumstances led to an amazing acoustic performance! We felt like we were included in a private jam session in their living room. Such fun, and great entertainment, despite the weather. It only makes us want to see them again... and again! :)

UNBELIEVABLE!!!

They were visually stunning & on point with everything. Glad they had signed merchandise.

Their renditions of cover songs were mind blowing. If they could have performed for 2-3 hours, that would have been AWRSOME!

Warning: this episode contains strong language, descriptions of explicit content and sexual harassment

A disturbing new problem is sweeping American schools: Students are using artificial intelligence to create sexually explicit images of their classmates and then share them without the person depicted even knowing.

Natasha Singer, who covers technology, business and society for The Times, discusses the rise of deepfake nudes and one girl’s fight to stop them.

On today’s episode

Natasha Singer , a reporter covering technology, business and society for The New York Times.

A girl and her mother stand next to each other wearing black clothing. They are looking into the distance and their hair is blowing in the wind.

Background reading

Using artificial intelligence, middle and high school students have fabricated explicit images of female classmates and shared the doctored pictures.

Spurred by teenage girls, states have moved to ban deepfake nudes .
