Southwestern Ontario occupies an area roughly the size of Belgium or Switzerland , but with a population of only about 2.5 million, which is better compared to Lesotho or Qatar . Its largest city is London, with a population of about 390,000, while its largest urban area is the Waterloo region, with a population of about 540,000.

Traditionally inhabited and exchanged by a variety of Indigenous First Nations, it was later settled by the French, colonized by the English, populated by United Empire Loyalists who fled the United States, and urbanized by every wave of immigrants ever to come to Canada. It's Canada's most southern reach, and its manufacturing heartland, pinned between two massive freshwater lakes, and bordering two American industrial giants. In the early 20th century, it was a relatively self-sufficient manufacturing and transportation hub. In the 21st century, the sprawling mega-city of Toronto is increasingly affecting the economies and population dynamics at the furthest reaches of southwestern Ontario.

Ontario's changing economy has struck southwestern Ontario hard. Industrial pollution and regulation, the dissolution of the tobacco industry, followed by the corrosion of the manufacturing sector, has eviscerated rural areas and left cities like Windsor and London with some of Canada's highest unemployment levels. Others, like Waterloo and Guelph , having turned to technology and the arts, emerged unscathed and even vibrant.

Visitors to southwestern Ontario often come as an escape from the urban crush of Toronto and Detroit , but stay for its long beaches, clean parks, efficient highways, interesting towns, and economic opportunities.

London has the only airport in the area with regularly scheduled services to more than one destination, generally flying to Toronto and cities in Western Canada. Waterloo Region Airport flies nonstop to Calgary, while Windsor and Sarnia have services to Toronto. Residents often use Detroit, Buffalo, or Toronto airports for long-haul flights. All of these airports and a few others are regularly affected by route changes, new route developments, and the emergence and loss of small regional airlines.

Southwestern Ontario has three major controlled-access highways. Highway 401, sometimes claimed to be the world's busiest, begins in Windsor and bisects southwestern Ontario on its way to Toronto and onwards to the Quebec border. The other major highways are the 402, which begins at the Sarnia-Port Huron border and connects to the 401 in London, and the 403, which begins in Woodstock and proceeds through Brantford on its way to Hamilton and Toronto.

By public transport

• Via Rail, Canada's national passenger railway, serves the region on the Windsor-London-Toronto route, and the Sarnia-London-Toronto route.
• GO Transit, Toronto's commuter rail and bus service, has a few lines/routes that reach into southwestern Ontario, with an assortment of services terminating in Orangeville, Guelph, Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge, or Brantford on their way from Toronto and its suburbs.

While urban public transport is generally adequate, inter-city services are limited. Locals generally rely on personal vehicles, or limit their travel between the cities and towns in the area. Car rentals are widely available. Hitchhiking is illegal on the 400-series highways, and is both uncommon and challenging on rural roads. Casual ride sharing exists but is disorganized; Try searching on Kijiji.ca or on city-specific Facebook groups.

Intercity public transit services include:

• Via Rail 's Windsor-Toronto line serves Chatham, Glencoe, London, Ingersoll, Woodstock, and Brantford enroute to the GTA. The Sarnia-Toronto line serves Wyoming, Strathroy, London, St Mary's, Stratford, Kitchener, Guelph and Georgetown enroute to the GTA. Tickets can be purchased online and are generally cheaper if bought further in advance.
• Megabus ( Coach Canada ) serves the Fort Erie to Toronto route, with stops including Niagara Falls and St Catharines.
• TOK Coach (formerly Can-Ar Coach ) connects Toronto to Port Elgin via Orangeville and Kincardine.
• RobertQ 's airport services to London, Toronto, and Detroit, can make stops at Sarnia, Chatham, St Thomas, Strathroy, Tilbury, Woodstock, and Windsor.
• BendBus offers limited transport for daytrips from London to Grand Bend during the summer

Southwestern Ontario are the final stop on the Underground Railroad for many of those escaping slavery in the United States. The Buxton National Historic Site & Museum and Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site in Chatham-Kent are good place to explore this history.

The Alexander Graham Bell Homestead , just outside Brantford, is a museum that has been restored to how it looked when Bell invented the telephone here in the 1980s.

Her Majesty's Chapel of the Mohawks , on the outskirts of Brantford, was built by the British Crown in 1785 for the Mohawk and Iroquois people as a reminder of the agreements made with the British during the American Revolution.

In Owen Sound, the Tom Thomson Art Gallery exhibits a collection of works by Thompson and the Group of Seven, who were an important group of Canadian artists in the early 20th century.

The ports, towns and villages along Lake Erie, including Port Dover, Port Stanley, Turkey Point and Long Point, are lovely places for hanging out on the beach , browsing in shops, or having a drink overlooking the lake. The Lake Huron beach towns are also buzzing in the summer because of their long stretches of fresh water beaches.

The Stratford Festival is one of the main tourist draws for the region. It runs from April to October, and is recognized worldwide for its productions of Shakespearean plays. The Blyth Festival produces a summer season of all-Canadian plays.

The Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is a Bavarian festival held annually in October; it is the largest in the world outside of Munich, Germany.

The Elora Gorge attracts sightseers, campers, hikers, kayakers, zipliners and tubers. The limestone cliffs are 22 metres high and the Grand River exits frantically through the Gorge.

There are many beautiful parks in the region for scenery and outdoor recreation, including Point Pelee National Park , Ontario's southernmost mainland point, and a marshy peninsula home to significant wetlands. The untamed shores of the Bruce Peninsula are particularly beautiful near Tobermory, where the Bruce Peninsula National Park protects and the Fathom Five National Marine Park protect the shoreline, cliffs, rocky islands and underwater diving sites where the Niagara Escarpment meets Lake Huron. Smaller provincial parks and conservation areas, such as Rockwood Park , offer day-use and overnight camping experiences throughout the region.

The Great Lakes Waterfront Trail stretches over 2,100 km (1,300 mi) along the Canadian shores of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, Lake Huron and the Niagara, Detroit, and St. Lawrence Rivers, connecting 114 communities and hundreds of parks and natural areas including wetlands, forests, and beaches. The Bruce Trail stretches more than 890 km, mostly following the edge of the Niagara Escarpment from Tobermory, at the tip of the peninsula, to Queenston near Niagara Falls.

The Village at Blue Mountain in Grey County is a year-round centre for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, golf, mountain biking, rock climbing, and caving.

The St. Jacobs Farmers' Market draws visitors from all over southern Ontario: over 600 vendors, including many Mennonite families, bring their fresh produce, baked goods, ethnic foods, furniture, and clothing.

Because of its mild climate, the Lake Erie shore is Ontario's second most important wine region after Niagara. There are many wineries open for tours and tastings.

Staying in Canada, the Greater Toronto Area is the next segment of the Windsor-Quebec corridor , and the Niagara Peninsula is almost due east of most of Southwestern Ontario. If you're in Tobermory , you can take a ferry to Manitoulin Island and from there continue on to Northern Ontario .

Leaving Canada, you can go north from Windsor to visit Detroit or west from Sarnia to visit Flint , and from either of those cities start your exploration of Michigan and the Midwest United States of America .

12 (Back) Road Trips in Ontario’s Beautiful Southwest

Road trips are a great time to reconnect….

When I hear the words road and trip, I think of rolled-down windows and off-key singing to an endless loop of tunes. 

I think of reconnecting to the person I’m travelling with and laughing at old and newly created memories.

When the opportunity to take a road trip through Southwestern Ontario’s Oxford County came my way, I knew it would give me a chance to reconnect to my past as well. 

My childhood landscape was filled with corn fields (I even had my first kiss in one) and barns and silos dotted the horizon of my day-to-day adventures. Visiting tiny towns that are nestled among gently rolling hills, would feel like going home, and it did.

My sister and I decided on a girls’ weekend theme and climbed into our kid-free/husband-free car, where we cranked some retro Barenaked Ladies  and hit the road. After a short 90 minute drive from Toronto, we pulled into Coyle’s Country Store to kick off our weekend of window shopping and dining ( one of the 12 suggested road trips that you can choose from Ontario Southwest’s website ). 

Dinner was served in the heart of town, at the well-known Niko’s Eatery & Bar. We took advantage of the Oxfordlicious set menu (offered across Oxford region to celebrate local ingredients) and filled up on Lake Erie Perch, steak and fresh steamed veggies. Niko’s has a family centred appeal, with Nonna making the baklava each week in the kitchen and that approach can be felt in both the food and warm service. 

The next stop was a highlight for both of us. September and the return to school routines is always welcome, but it also knocks you on your back in many ways. School and extracurricular activities leave little time for relaxation and escape. And the Elmhurst Inn & Spa in Ingersoll was calling to us loudly. From the moment we checked in, we could feel the zen taking over. We settled into our rooms, found our plush robes and headed down to the tranquil spa for an evening treatment.

Do you have a friend or family member whose baking sets your heart aflutter? Now imagine walking into a cozy café filled with that kind of baking. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that we started salivating as soon as we walked through the door of the Olde Bakery Café .  My sister zeroed in on the freshly baked raspberry turnovers, which she managed to hold off on until she had lunch. And lunch did not disappoint. This café is home to young culinary talent, including chef, Kate Rine (her food blog is here ), whose Portuguese Stone soup was absolutely phenomenal. The food is made in an in-house kitchen, which also features a separate and completely gluten-free baking area. Everyone knows everyone’s name, and you feel like you’re hanging out in a friend’s kitchen having coffee. We need more gathering places like this one. 

We pulled into a third-generation dairy farm and home of Gunn’s Hill Artisan Cheese , where we were treated to a tour and tasting by award-winning cheese maker and owner, Shep Ysselstein. This family owned business, in an absolutely beautiful area of Oxford County, is an Ontario (and Canadian) treasure. We wandered aisles of new and old cheese, and we learned about the flavouring and textures. It was visually stunning to see the rows of cheese. You can book tours for $5/person as long as there are five people in your group. Not only is it a fascinating learning experience, you will be rewarded with delicious samples at the end.

We finally pulled our well-fed selves into the brand new Holiday Inn Express in Woodstock , so we could powder our noses and put on our cowgirl boots for dinner at Walter’s Dinner Theatre in the beautiful town of Bright. Once again, we found ourselves travelling down a gravel road and winding our way through stunning farmlands. We pulled into Walters’ and were surprised by the number of cars and eager theatre-goers. In all my years of going to concerts, I’ve never had an experience like this one. We walked into a converted barn, with all its old-fashioned quaintness, and saw a room filled with tables for eight, clustered around a state-of-the-art stage. We were treated to a homemade meal (buffet-style and perfect for chatting with the other guests) and had the chance to share a meal with a table of strangers. Once again, we were touched by the simplicity and hospitality of being in a place where people want to know your name. The live show (which goes on after dinner) was very entertaining and the audience was delighted. Their schedule of shows changes every year, and it’s recommended that you book well in advance.

I’m from the UK but I have friends in Ingersoll. I went quite a few times as a teen with my parents and this brings back some great memories of the area. My Dad could never remember the name of Tilsonburg so used to call it Tinklywinkly!

I really was blown away by the farmhouse concert. Even though it wasn’t my genre of music, it was a magical experience in an absolutely BEAUTIFUL setting. It’s lovely to hear that there are other options. Thank you for sharing.

12 Things to See and Do in Southwestern Ontario

Ontario, “yours to discover”. I never really understood what that meant as a kid, whenever I’d see it on an Ontario license plate. It’s shameful to admit that I was raised and live in Toronto, and I will plan trips all around the world, but have never taken time to explore my own backyard! I was surprised to see just how much there is to discover within less than a 3-hr. drive from Toronto.

I went on a little road trip with some girlfriends to Ontario’s Southwest , specifically Sarnia & Point Edward and Grand Bend. We visited several places along Ontario’s Blue Coast – the stretch of Lake Huron’s shoreline in Southwestern Ontario between Sarnia and Grand Bend that boasts a number of Blue Flag Beaches, among other attractions. We experienced so much during our 3 days in the area, including lots of good food, drinks, and activities that I want to share with you. So, here are 12 things you can see and do in Ontario’s Southwest and Ontario’s Blue Coast, for yourself:

1. Grand Bend Beach

I’m a beach bum at heart, so Grand Bend Beach was the absolute highlight of the trip for me. The water is so turquoise, you’ll think you’re in the Caribbean. So, instead of setting your sights on that resort getaway outside of Canada, look no further than Grand Bend! Grand Bend Beach was awarded a Blue Flag in 2010 – a certification given to select beaches around the world that have excellent water quality and meet high safety, environmental, and sustainability standards.

Photo opps abound at the pier, with its iconic lighthouse at the end. Be sure to arrive early for photos, unless you’re okay with having lots of people in your shot! Grand Bend Beach is well-outfitted with amenities for the public, like a boardwalk, washrooms, change rooms, and outdoor showers. Are you the adventurous type? You can do lots of water sports here too, like parasailing, jet skiing, and boat riding. We got out on a boat ride with Xtreme Water Sports and had a blast!

And if all of that isn’t reason enough, Grand Bend is also known for its fiery red sunsets. I was told that the sunsets here are amongst the best in the world (right up there with Greece, believe it or not!). Catch the sunset from the beach or on a patio, like at Smackwater Jack’s Taphouse , which has a good selection of cocktails, large plates, and loaded nachos!

2. Stroll along Main Street in Grand Bend

Grand Bend is a great place to surf in Ontario, so it’s not surprising that its Main Street feels a bit like a surfing town. Apart from surf shops and other boutique stores, there are lots of bars, restaurants, and even ice cream shops along the main strip.

We had a fantastic meal and yummy cocktails at Midori Sushi , which is closer to the top of the strip. It has a large dining room, comfortable back patio that’s perfect for people watching, and an outdoor bar/deck area with the cutest swings.

Another place to check out, which is just off the top of Main Street is Highway Girl . This adorable shop and café specializes in vegan, gluten-free, organic and healthy eats, pressed juices, ethically sourced coffee and products; and it’s the only one of its kind in this area.

3. Canatara Beach

Canatara Beach is another Blue Flag beach in Ontario. Even on an overcast day, like the day we visited, the water was remarkably clear! For a quick cheat sheet on what to do at Canatara Beach , click here .

Pinery Provincial Park spans more than 6,300 acres and is a must-visit when in Ontario’s Southwest and Ontario’s Blue Coast. It has lots of walking and hiking trails, several beach areas, and camping grounds (including Yurt camping!). We didn’t get to spend much time on its 10 km stretch of beach because of the rain, but make this a priority when you go.

5. Check out Alton Farms Estate Winery, the first winery along Huron Shores

Marc & Anne Alton started their winery, Alton Farms Estate Winery , over 12 years ago and are known as the pioneer winemakers in this region. Their dedication to the craft of winemaking is apparent, and their hard work helped lead to recognition by the VQA of the new Huron Shores wine region along Ontario’s Blue Coast. Try their Egremont Red and Aberarder wines, which are made from grapes indigenous to the region.

6. Visit Dark Horse Estate Winery, the largest winery along Huron Shores

Dark Horse Estate Winery is simply majestic! Set atop of over 20 acres of land, you’ll want to spend ample time here. Also in the new Huron Shores wine region, Dark Horse Estate Winery has a large tasting room and beautiful vineyard.

It’s a popular event venue, with weddings filling the vineyard ballroom and cellar reception hall almost every weekend. It also has a barrel cellar in the basement for more intimate events.

After sampling their wines, be sure to dine on a fantastic meal at Barrel Bistro , a family-run fine dining restaurant in the basement that has first rate chefs. Lucky for us, they began serving brunch on the day we visited. Try their Eggs Benny, which has braised ham hock and leeks, and is to die for!

  7. Grab some tacos and cocktails at Café Mexico in Sarnia

When in or near Sarnia, my recommendation is to beeline straight for Café Mexico ! My favourite meal on our trip, they serve up some pretty tasty Mexican fare and awesome craft cocktails. Apart from great food and drink, the space is super aesthetically pleasing and the service is friendly (shout out to Cilas, our waiter).

8. Hang out at the Blue Water Bridge

No trip to Sarnia is complete without spending some time at the Blue Water Bridge . This landmark is on top of the St. Clair River, linking Sarnia and Port Huron, Michigan. Aside from a river stroll, most people come here to sample the famous “bridge fries” from Albert’s , which is like a rite of passage.

9. Have a flight of craft beer at Refined Fool Brewery Co.

The result of a bunch of ‘backyard brewers’ getting together to form their own microbrewery, Refined Fool Brewery Co. is the place to get craft beer in Sarnia. Go to either of their 2 locations to have a flight of craft beers with funny names, like “Carp and Tunnel Syndrome”, “Pinky Brewster”, or “Hipster Doofus”.

10. Get caffeinated at Blackwater Coffee Co.

Originally from Toronto, owner, Dave Duguay, has been roasting coffee beans for about 30 years. He set up shop at Blackwater Coffee Company along Christina St. in Sarnia, and has been caffeinating residents since 2010. Despite his down-to-earth personality and demeanour, he has exceptionally high standards for his coffees and lattes (all of which must be served with beautiful latte art).

11. Drop some cash or dine at the Casino

Technically located in Point Edward (a separate village adjacent to Sarnia) and right next to the St. Clair River, Gateway Casinos is the place to go to drop or make some dough.

Whether or not gambling is your thing, MATCH Eatery & Public House is a friendly gastropub with a variety of options for food and drink and satisfying portions.

12. Play golf or overnight at Oakwood Resort

The only golf resort (and resort, in general) in Grand Bend, Oakwood Resort has kept some families coming back for decades. Owned by Dave Scatcherd (of the Labatt family), it’s a rustic property with cottages and suites, a large spa, indoor pool, tennis courts, and an 18-hole golf course. There are 2 bars and a dining room on-site, which serves a good breakfast. But, our favourite part was the private beach that’s easily accessible from the property.

Next time you’re planning a mini getaway outside of Toronto, take some time to explore Sarnia and Grand Bend. We had a blast on this trip, and I can’t wait to be back!

Indigenous Tourism in Ontario’s Southwest

The lakes, rivers, and land we love to explore in Ontario’s Southwest were cared for by Indigenous Peoples who were here long before any settlers. Ontario’s Southwest is on the traditional territories of the Anishnaabeg/Anishinaabeg/Anishnabek/Anishinabek, Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), Huron-Wendt/Huron-Wendat, Attawandaron (Neutral), Lenape, Ojibway/Chippewa, and Wendat Indigenous Peoples. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties . Please take the time to read about the Upper Canada Treaties and understand how they continue to impact Indigenous Peoples living in Ontario’s Southwest.

We recognize and deeply appreciate the First Nations' historical connection to, and stewardship of this place. We also recognize the contributions of Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples have made, both in shaping and strengthening this community in particular, and our province and country as a whole. We're grateful for the opportunity to live and work here and we thank all the generations of people who have taken care of this land.

Heritage, Culture, and Celebrations Created by Indigenous Peoples

Historical records and history books often exclude Indigenous perspectives, which means there is a lot of history you may not be aware of. Indigenous Peoples lived in Southwestern Ontario long before settlers and there is a rich history that is often unknown to many that live in and visit Ontario’s Southwest. Reading and watching content created by Indigenous Peoples fills knowledge gaps that you may have as a result of Indigenous voices historically being omitted.

Here are some examples of content created by local Indigenous Peoples that we encourage you to look into:

• Historical Tidbits by Darin Wybenga is an online blog with information about Indigenous Peoples and events in history that you should know about.
• You can read about the unique Kettles found only in Kettle and Stony Point and learn about their origin story, here .  

If you are invited to participate in any traditional events by Indigenous Peoples, please do your due diligence by researching prior to attending so that you understand the cultural significance.

Indigenous Artists

Art is a storytelling mechanism. We encourage you to take in Indigenous stories by appreciating artwork made by Indigenous artists.

Gina Wilson-Mcintee is a visual artist and educator based in Dunnville. Her unique designs are created on canvas, gourds, wall board, canoe paddles, hand drums & clothing apparel. Click here to see her website and to shop her collection of works. 

Multi-Media Art at Point Pelee National Park

Point Pelee National Park is leading by example and working with Indigenous partners at Caldwell First Nation and Walpole Island First Nation Council to tell the story of Point Pelee. This is often being done through art created by Indigenous artists to honour the land that was taken.

If you find yourself near Point Pelee, take some time to really appreciate the following art: 

• The turtle sculpture at Point Pelee was designed by Teresa Altiman from Walpole Island First Nation.
• The welcome sign in Ojibwe-Anishinaabemowin, English, and French can be viewed at the gates to Point Pelee and was created digitally by Darryl Van Oirschot from Caldwell First Nation. 
• Madbin Jina, formerly known as Pioneer at the Point Pelee National Park day-use area, invites visitors to come "sit a while". A traditional expression for welcoming guests in Anishinaabemowin.

Visiting these murals in person will allow you to gain a better understanding of the story the artist is telling and fully grasp the beauty of their work.

The following mural was created by Josh Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley, an Ojibwe Woodland artist. It is named “Nwizhaagoojitoonmin” which translates to “we will overcome it”. This hidden gem is tucked away in an alley in Simcoe that runs between Robinson and Peel. 

Hawlii Pichette (also known as Urban Iskwew ) is one of the artists that contributed the Market Lane Murals in London. She is an Indigenous artist and beadworker who collects inspiration through traditional Indigenous artforms and patterns.

Virtually Explore Indigenous Art

The Indigenous London Arts is a virtual space that represents a commitment from the London Arts Council to foster relationship building, as the consensual sharing of knowledge concerning Indigenous history, culture, and philosophy as the first step in this process. Through art and storytelling, visitors will learn about Indigenous History virtually. 

Museums, Exhibits, and Historical Places

The following museums feature exhibits that were developed through consultation with the Indigenous Peoples. When the time is right, visiting these museums and exhibits will be a powerful way to explore the stories of those that came before us and gain respect and understanding for the perspectives of the Original People of this land.

Ska-Nah-Doht , located in the Longwoods Resource Centre, this Museum includes 18 outdoor exhibits that guests can explore to learn about First Nations Peoples and their culture. Included in this exhibit is a recreated longhouse village to symbolise what would have existed 1,000 years ago.

The Original Peoples Culture and Legacy Gallery is a permanent exhibit at the Chimczuk Museum in Windsor. This exhibit includes information on creation stories, treaties, residential schools and 60’s Scoop, language revitalization, missing and murdered women, Medicine Wheel teachings, and cultural expressions. When this museum is open and it is safe to travel, it is a must see you’ll want to add to your future travel list.

The Museum of Ontario Archaeology has many permanent exhibits that teach Indigenous heritage and culture, including the Oneida and Anishinaabe/Ojibwe Language exhibit that aims to revitalize and preserve Indigenous languages. While there, make sure to check out the Lawson site . This site includes a reconstructed longhouse which exists on the same footprint that a First Nations village existed on 500 years ago and was estimated to be the home of 2,000 First Nation Peoples year-round. 

If you are looking for an outdoor museum experience, visit the  Tecumseh Monument Park , a site commemorating the Battle of the Thames and the death of the great Chief Tecumseh and the Friends of Tecumseh Monument Interpretive Plaza, established in 2015, with four interpretive panels on Chief Tecumseh. The panels tell the story of his early years through conflict with American expansionism ending with his death and the end of the First Nation's confederacy which he led.

At Rondeau Provincial Park, Aamjiwnaang First Nations, Eelünaapèewii Lahkèewiit and the Caldwell First Nation worked with park staff to incorporate Indigenous voices and teachings into the park’s Visitor Centre, trails, and programs. See the video below to learn more about the Gathering project .

Caldwell First Nations created a storywalk that was placed along the Tulip Tree Trail at Rondeau Park. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the trail while following the journey of Rainey and Mkinaak as the characters share traditional stories of wildlife they spot along the way. This is an excellent opportunity to learn some Anishinaabemowin. Children love this experience as they run to the next page of the story.

The Spirit Horse Encounter at TJ Stables is a unique experience where people walk amongst the historic Ojibwe Spirit Horses and gather around the fire at the authentic Metis fur trade Tipi encampment.

If ever there was place where Ontario’s quality, diversity and scale of culinary experiences was on display – it’s in Southwest Ontario. The area is big, so we don’t recommend trying to see it all in one trip. Choose a region (like Windsor Essex , Oxford County or Chatham-Kent ) and start there!

Ontario’s Southwest is home to Ontario’s oldest and newest wine regions. Wineries of all shapes and sizes dot the coast and provide a welcome escape from urban life. Sip sparklers at North 42 Winery , indulge in big bold reds at Paglione Estates Winery or go off the beaten track and visit Dark Horse Estate Winery for a rosé slushie.

Did you know Windsor has it’s own, distinct pizza culture? People have been known to bring half-baked pies home on flights after visiting the pies are so good. Explore the area, slice by slice, with the Windsor Pizza Club . We recommend starting at Caboto Club Pizza – Southwestern Ontario’s largest and oldest Italian club – and ordering a Lombarda. It’s a perfect harmony of mozzarella, zucchini, and milanese salami done up in a wood-fired oven.

Travelling with the kids in tow? Head for Oxford County and have your very own ‘ Picnic in the Patch ‘ at Berrylicious Fruit Farm – an OSW Signature experience. This pick-your-own blueberry farm is also Ontario’s largest grower of elderberries. They offer curated picnic baskets complete with blanket and blueberry lemonade, you can lay out in special spots in their fields, as well as guided picking tours and pollinator scavenger hunts for the wee ones!

If you're starting this drive from the closest entrance to Toronto - Quinte West , a vibrant city located at the western end of the Bay of Quinte , is where you'll find the western gate to the Loyalist Parkway route.

Formed through the amalgamation of Trenton, Frankford, and the townships of Murray and Sidney in 1998, Quinte West offers a blend of urban and rural attractions .

Highlights of the region include the picturesque waterfront , the Trent-Severn Waterway , and loads of parks and trails . The surrounding communities of Carrying Place, Batawa, and Wooler each have their own unique charm, making it a great place to explore .

Once you reach in PEC, you'll board the free ferry ride over the Napanee River to Adolphustown in the Greater Napanee region.

The Monday, April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse crossed North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The total solar eclipse began over the South Pacific Ocean. Weather permitting, the first location in continental North America that experienced totality is Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT.

The path of the eclipse continued from Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and traveled through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse. The eclipse entered Canada in Southern Ontario, and continued through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton. The eclipse exited continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.
