Treatment Benefit Scheme

What is treatment benefit, dental benefit, optical benefit, medical lenses, hearing aids, hairpiece and wig, how to qualify for treatment benefit, how to apply for treatment benefit, contact details.

Treatment Benefit is a scheme run by the Department of Social Protection (DSP) to provide a limited financial contribution towards dental, optical and aural services.

The Treatment Benefit Scheme is available to insured workers, the self-employed and retired people who have the required number of PRSI contributions .

Under the Treatment Benefit Scheme, you may qualify for:

  • Dental benefit
  • Optical benefit
  • Hair piece or wig

You should contact your treatment provider to check your eligibility before proceeding with any treatment.

Treatment Benefit in the EU

If you choose to have treatment in another EU member state, the DSP will pay an amount equivalent to the rate paid for similar treatments carried out in Ireland or the amount actually paid for the treatment - whichever is the lower. You must still have the qualifying PRSI contributions.

Contact the Treatment Benefit Section (see 'Contact details' below) before you travel to get an application form and details of the amounts the DSP will pay.

Under this scheme, the DSP pays the full cost of an oral examination once a calendar year.

A payment of €42 towards either a scale and polish or - if clinically necessary - periodontal treatment, is also available once a calendar year. If the cost of either cleaning or periodontal treatment is more than €42, you must pay the balance - capped at €15 for a scale and polish. There is no cap on the balance charged for periodontal treatment.

Treatment is provided by private dentists who are on the DSP's panel. Lists of dentists on the panel are available from the DSP . Most dentists are on the panel, so you should not have any difficulty finding one. The dentist will be able to check your eligibility and make a claim for you. The claim form will require details such as your Personal Public Service Number (PPS number) , date of birth and signature. If you are a dependent spouse or civil partner, you should give the PPS number of the insured person, who will also be required to sign the claim form.

You may get tax relief on certain non-routine dental treatments .

The Treatment Benefit Scheme entitles you to a free eyesight test, once every 2 years. However, sight tests for VDUs and driving licences are not covered under the scheme.

You can get a set payment , once every 2 years, towards either one pair each of reading and distance spectacles, one pair of bifocal or varifocals or one pair of contact lenses (including disposables). Cost will vary depending on the frames you choose. Basic frames are free.

The examination is provided by opticians , optometrists or ophthalmologists who have a contract with the DSP.

If you need contact lenses for medical reasons, you can get up to €1,000 towards the cost of a pair of medical contact lenses (€500 for each contact lens) once every 2 years. This applies to a small number of eye conditions that make wearing glasses impossible. You must have a doctor's recommendation. Contact lenses are not available on purely cosmetic grounds. Contact lenses for optical purposes are available through the Optical Benefit scheme above.

Hearing aids may be provided by suppliers who have a contract with the DSP . The DSP pays the full cost of a hearing aid up to a maximum of €500 (€1,000 for a pair) once every 4 years. It also pays the full cost of repairs to aids, up to a maximum of €100, once every 4 years.

From 28 May 2022, you can get up to €500 for one hair replacement item such as a hairpiece or wig, in each calendar year. It does not cover surgical or topical treatments.

Hair loss must be from a disease or treatment of a disease such as cancer or alopecia. The types of alopecia covered are:

  • Alopecia areata (which includes alopecia totalis or universalis, diffuse alopecia areata, alopecia ophiasis)
  • Primary scarring alopecias (cicatricial alopecias)
  • Frontal fibrosing alopecia and lichen planopilaris (scarring alopecia)
  • Chemotherapy induced alopecia (anagen effluvium)
  • Alopecia resulting from surgery or trauma, including burns

You must buy the hair piece or wig from the Department's list of approved providers .

Contribution conditions

You must have paid Class A, E, H, P or S social insurance contributions.

The amount of social insurance you need depends on your age.

( 1) Aged under 21

If you are aged under 21, you may qualify if you have paid at least 39 contributions at any time.

(2) Aged 21-28

Between these ages you may qualify if you have paid at least 39 contributions and

  • At least 39 paid or credited in the governing contribution year (2021is the governing contribution year for claims made in 2023) or
  • 26 paid contributions in each of the second and third last contribution years. For claims made in 2023, the second last contribution year is 2021 and the third last contribution year is 2020.

(3) Aged 29-65

From the age of 29 onwards, you must have at least 260 paid contributions and

  • At least 39 paid or credited contributions in the governing contribution year (2021 is the governing contribution year for claims made in 2023) or

(4) Aged 66 and over

There are special rules for people aged 66 and over. To qualify, you must have:

  • 260 PRSI contributions paid at any time and 39 paid or credited contributions in the relevant tax year or the year immediately before it. The relevant tax year is the second last completed tax year before reaching 66 years of age. (For example, if you were 66 in 2015, the relevant tax year is 2013.)
  • 260 PRSI contributions paid at any time and 26 paid contributions in both the relevant tax year and the year immediately before it. The relevant tax year is the second last completed tax year before reaching 66 years of age. (For example, if you were 66 in 2015, the relevant tax year is 2013.)

There are, however, a number of exceptions to the above:

If you reached 66 between 1 October 1987 and 6 July 1992, you need 208 paid contributions.

If you are getting a State pension the PRSI contribution requirements vary according to age as follows:

*The relevant tax year is the second last completed tax year before reaching 66 years of age. (For example, if you were 66 in 2015, the relevant tax year is 2013.)

If you satisfy these conditions when you reach pension age, you will remain qualified for life.

Qualified at 60 and over

If you qualify for benefit at age 60–65, you retain that entitlement for life. If you have retired on grounds of ill health or you are considered to be unemployed, you can apply for Illness Benefit or Jobseeker's Benefit, subject to satisfying the statutory conditions. Your entitlement to these benefits may also lead to your being awarded credited contributions, which can be taken into account to extend coverage for treatment benefits for further periods.

Spouse, civil partner or cohabitant

A spouse, civil partner or cohabitant may, of course, qualify in their own right if they have enough social insurance contributions.

If your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant does not have enough social insurance contributions they may still qualify for Treatment Benefit on your social insurance record. To do this, you must qualify for Treatment Benefit and your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant must be dependent on you.

A dependent spouse, civil partner or cohabitant must:

  • Have a gross income of €100 or less per week. If earning more than €100 per week, he/she must have been dependent on you before entering or resuming insurable employment (at Class A, E, H, P or S).
  • Not be getting a social welfare payment (except Disablement Pension, Supplementary Welfare Allowance, Carer's Benefit or Child Benefit). If getting Carer's Allowance or State Pension (Non-Contributory), he/she can qualify if he/she was dependent on you immediately before getting the Allowance or Pension.

If an insured person dies and the dependent spouse or civil partner was entitled to benefit at the time of the death, they retain entitlement for as long as they remain widowed or a surviving civil partner.

EU regulations and Treatment Benefit

If you were previously insurably employed in a country covered by EU Regulations and you do not qualify on your Irish PRSI record, your social insurance record in the other EU country may be used to help you qualify for Treatment Benefit. You must have paid at least one reckonable PRSI contribution (Classes A, E, H, P and S) since your return to Ireland.

Claims are made through your provider (dentist, dispensing optician/optometrist/ophthalmologist or audiologist), who can check your entitlement in advance of treatment and claim payment afterwards.

Your provider will require some information to identify you, such as your date of birth and PPS number . Prior to treatment, you will need to sign a Consent Form agreeing to your provider having this information and giving your consent to have this information supplied to the Department of Social Protection, to enable payment of your claim.

If you are claiming as a dependant under the PRSI record of your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant, both you and your spouse or partner will need to sign the Consent Form.

For treatment received in other EU member states, you contact the Treatment Benefit Section at the address below to confirm your eligibility. If eligible, you send your receipts to the Treatment Benefit Section along with a letter containing your contact information and details of your bank account (account name, number and sort code) into which payment will be made.

What is covered under PRSI?

The Treatment Benefit Scheme provides PRSI workers with one free dental examination per year along with either:

- One subsidised Scale and polish treatment

- One subsidised Periodontal treatment

The decision to have a scale and polish treatment or periodontal treatment is determined by your individual oral health needs. Periodontal treatment is also referred to as deep cleaning of the gums and teeth- it is carried out under local anaesthetic in cases where a regular scale and polish would be insufficient at restoring gum health. Your dentist will advise you which treatment is best suited to you following your oral examination .

What is the Treatment Benefit Scheme?

The Treatment Benefit Scheme is a government scheme which is run by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. It provides dental, optical, and aural services to employed, self-employed, and retired people who have the required number of PRSI contributions. Your PRSI status will determine whether or not you are entitled to treatment.

Whether or not you are qualified for dental treatment depends on the number of PRSI contributions you have made - which will differ depending on your age.

1) Aged under 21 You will need 39 contributions to be covered for dental treatment under PRSI

2) Aged between 21-24 You will need at least 39 paid or credited contributions in the governing contribution year* OR 26 paid contributions in each of the second and third contribution years**

3) Aged between 25-65 You must have paid 260 contributions AND at least 39 paid or credited contributions in the governing contribution year* OR 26 paid contributions in each of the second and third contribution years**

4) Aged 66+ You must have 260 PRSI contributions paid at any time and 39 paid or credited contributions in the relevant tax year*** or the year immediately before it. OR You must have 260 PRSI contributions paid at any time and 26 paid contributions in the relevant tax year*** and the year immediately before it.

If your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant doesn’t have enough PRSI contributions they may still be eligible on your social insurance record. Please do check with us if you think this may be the case. *for claims made in 2023 the last contribution year is 2021 ** for claims made in 2023 the second last contribution year is 2021 and the third last contribution year is 2020 ***The relevant tax year is the second last completed tax year before reaching 66 years of age. Example: You turned 66 in 2012 so the relevant tax year is 2010.

More information can be found here .

How can I check my eligibility?

Simply call us today and our friendly front of house team can check your eligibility on your behalf- all we need is your PPS number and your Date of Birth.

Our team will then tell you if your claim is:

1. Approved: meaning you are entitled to an Exam, Scale and polish for just €15. 2. Pending: meaning your eligibility requires some further checks by a welfare administrator prior to approval. You may still be eligible for an exam, scale and polish for €15 but we will not be made aware of this until a later date. 3. Not approved: you can still choose to take important action towards your oral health today by making a private appointment for an exam, scale and polish .

I am self-employed, how will it work for me and my staff?

Since 2019 self employed people, business owners, and farmers have been eligible for PRSI entitlements - so long as the required PRSI contributions are met. Many of your employees will be unaware of their PRSI entitlements and so you should do your best to encourage them to avail of this scheme.

The recommended interval between Dental Check ups and Scale and Polish Treatments is 6 months. Availing from your PRSI subsidised treatment will allow problems to be identified as early as possible- allowing for timely intervention and preventing the development of future dental problems which can be complicated, time consuming and costly to fix.

Don’t let your PRSI dental entitlements go to waste. You can only avail of these benefits once per calendar year- even if you forgot to claim in the previous year.

Call us  with your PPS number and Date of Birth and ask our team to check if you are eligible for treatment covered by PRSI today.

PRSI & Dental Care

  • News & Offers

If you’re eligible for PRSI entitlements, then you will benefit from some dental advantages.

One of these benefits is a yearly check-up and cleaning, which includes scaling, polishing and fluoride treatment to help prevent the development of tooth decay.

Keep reading to know all the information about PRSI and dental care.

What is PRSI, and what does it cover?

Employers and employees (over 16 years old) are required to pay social insurance contributions to the national Social Insurance Fund. This is compulsory, but some people with unearned income may also be liable for PRSI.

The Social Security contributions you pay depend on the nature of your work. For example, a person employed in a supermarket earning less than €38 per week will be insured under Class J, but if that same person earns over €38 they would probably be classified with Class A PRSI depending on their employment situation.

Anyone with any unearned income over €5,000 is considered to be a ‘chargeable person’, and they are liable to pay the PRSI charge at 4% on all their unearned income. They’ll have to report it under Revenue’s self-assessment system.

Am I eligible for PRSI entitlements?

Despite the availability of a free dental scheme, only 25% of those eligible are taking advantage. Why? Could it be because they’re afraid to show their teeth or maybe nobody told them about the offer!

Everyone who pays PRSI is entitled to a free dental check-up twice a year at their nearest registered provider of the scheme; however, it’s important not just because we need our teeth checked but also as preventive care against future costs such as tooth decay which could lead us into spending more money on expensive treatments later down the line.

Your dentist is the best person to catch any dental issues early on before they become bigger and more expensive. Preventing tooth decay, teeth grinding, gum disease or even cancer can be done with a regular check-up from your dentist!

The Treatment Benefit Scheme is available to the insured worker, self-employed and retired people with a sufficient number of social insurance (PRSI) contributions. To qualify for this, one must have paid Class A, E, P H or S Social Insurance Contributions – depending on their age. One may only be eligible if they’ve made enough Irish PRSI contributions over time, reflecting certain variations in what’s required based on your personal circumstances.

The social insurance contributions of your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant can be transferred onto a single person’s record if the other individual is dependent on them. Qualifying for Treatment Benefit and having enough social security contributions will allow this to happen while ensuring that both parties can maintain their benefits from it.

I’m eligible for PRSI entitlements, what dental benefits do I have?

The Treatment Benefit Scheme, run by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, provides dental care to insured workers. The self-employed can also receive treatment under this scheme if they have paid a required number of social insurance contributions in their lifetime.

When you need a dental check-up, your dentist will take care of all the details. The Treatment Benefit Scheme entitles PRSI workers to enjoy these privileges with your health plan:

  • A full oral examination once a year to make sure everything is healthy and clean. It’s crucial in maintaining your oral health, which includes checking the teeth, tongue, gums, and the roof of the mouth for cysts or any other abnormalities.
  • A scale & polish (cap at €15), which helps prevent gum disease by removing plaque buildup. And if that doesn’t do it for you, there are other options like a part-subsidized “Protracted Periodontal Treatment” which is a scale & polish with a gum bonus.

Visiting the dentist at least once a year is important for detecting these issues early on before they become more expensive problems. Cleaning our teeth regularly eliminates bacteria leading us to cavities as well as bad breath due to gum disease, among other things.

You can access a subsidised scale and polish with your hygienist once per year, but you should check ahead of time to ensure that they offer this service at the clinic. College Gate Dental Clinic is one of those practices which does have it available, so if that’s what you are looking for, then head on over there!

PRSI, or the Public Services Retirement Scheme, is an Irish social insurance scheme that pays for retirement benefits and pensions. It also offers dental benefits to its members. If you are not sure if your employer has signed up with PRSI or which of their employees are eligible for this benefit, make sure to ask them! You can also contact the HR department about these questions through email or phone call. No matter whom you talk to, though, be prepared with a list of all your dependents in order to get accurate information on how much coverage they may need .

Knowing what PRSI is and whether you are eligible for it is important. Now that we’ve covered the basics, here are a few more details about dental benefits from PRSI . If you have any questions or want to know if your employer offers this benefit, please leave them in the comments below!

VHI & PRSI Dental Entitlements

Vhi private health insurance & prsi entitlements, dental benefits & prsi entitlements.

If you live in Ireland as a citizen, resident, or are a member of another EU member country, you may be entitled to a free yearly dental check-up through the Dental Treatment Benefit Scheme.

Dental Treatment Benefit Scheme through PRSI

If you live in Ireland as a citizen, resident, or are a member of another EU member country, you may be entitled to a free yearly dental check-up through the Dental Treatment Benefit Scheme. Before 2010, more dental benefits were available; one free yearly dental check-up is all that remains due to government austerity.

How to Qualify for the Dental Treatment Benefit Scheme

In most cases, individuals must be paying social insurance contributions into the Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) under Class A, E, P, H or S. If you do not meet these criteria, you may still be eligible for the Treatment Benefit.

For example, you may be entitled due to your spouse’s PSRI contributions or if you’ve paid into a social insurance scheme in another EU country. Contact Revenue or the Social Welfare Office for more information on eligibility for the Treatment Benefit.

Your PRSI Entitlements for Dental Care

The Treatment Benefit Scheme entitles eligible individuals to one free dental examination per year as well as a subsidy of €42 for scale & polish or periodontal treatment. If the treatment will cost more than €42, you will be expected to pay the difference for periodontal treatment; the capped maximum payment for scale & polish is €15 as of 2022.

Medical Card Holder

We currently don’t accept medical cards at Bandon dental practice.

Private Dental Insurance

A growing number of Irish residents and citizens are choosing private dental insurance in order to receive access to a much wider range of professional dentists and dental services than the PSRI’s Dental Treatment Benefit Scheme provides.

Many private insurance companies such as VHI and Decare Ireland provide coverage for routine examinations, scaling & polishing, orthodontics, emergency treatment, and much more. Coverage and eligibility can vary widely from insurer to insurer, so shop around for a plan that fits your needs at a reasonable price.

Income Tax Deductions for Dental Care

You may be able to file for income tax deductions for dental care in with Revenue, which can greatly offset or completely cover the cost of non-routine dental care. Unfortunately, routine cleaning, fillings, tooth extraction, and scale & polish cannot be claimed as they are considered to be routine services.

Crowns, bridgework, periodontal treatment, and other surgical treatment options, however, can be claimed with Revenue by obtaining a Med 2 form from your dentist. Keep the Med 2 document for your own safekeeping.

Do You Qualify for Free Dental Care?

Not everyone is eligible for free or subsidised dental care in Ireland, nor are all dentists registered to provide treatment through the Dental Treatment Benefit Scheme. The eligibility criteria for PRSI or a medical card can be quite specific.

Moreover, you must ensure that your dentist is registered to provide treatment through the Treatment Benefit Scheme. A list of registered dentists can be found here. Bandon Dental is ready to accept new and returning patients, including those eligible for PRSI.

Frequently asked questions.

Most individuals in Ireland contributing to the PRSI scheme are eligible for one free dental examination per year under the Dental Treatment Benefit Scheme. Not all dentists are registered to provide free dental check-ups under the PRSI scheme, however.

For most individuals in Ireland, it is prudent to have some form of dental insurance to cover the costs – partially or fully – of dental care rather than have to pay out of pocket. VHI, Aviva, and Laya Healthcare are all popular insurance providers that provide dental insurance plans.

Individuals contributing to PRSI are normally entitled to the Dental Treatment Benefit Scheme, which fully covers the cost of one dental examination per year. Scale and polish teeth cleaning services are partially subsidised, so you will still have to pay €15 out of pocket. If your require periodontal treatment the cost will be more.

What dental treatment are children entitled to?

How do i make a complaint about my dentist. where should i go.

Before a formal complaint is made, every effort should be make to resolve any difficulties you are having directly with your dentist. If you feel unable to do this verbally, try doing it in writing.

While it is always best to contact your treating dentist in the first instance, you may wish to avail of the Dental Complaints Resolution Service . This service aims to resolve complaints submitted by patients.

If, at the end of the day, you feel you have not got satisfaction, and you wish to pursue the matter further, you should contact the  Irish Dental Council .

The Dental Council is a body established by legislation to promote high standards of professional education and professional conduct among dentists and to maintain Registers of persons entitled to practise dentistry in the State.

The Council is empowered to inquire into cases of alleged professional misconduct and alleged unfitness to practise because of physical or mental disability. If you have a complaint the Council may be able to assist you.

I visited a new dentist today who asked me a lot of questions about my general health. Was this really necessary?

The dentist will also ask you about any medication you are taking and will ask about any allergies you might have.  These are all precautionary measures designed to ensure that treatment can be carried out safely and efficiently while you visit your dentist.

I think I may be pregnant. Does my dentist need to know this?

If you think there is a chance you might be pregnant, it is always wise to inform your dentist before you begin treatment. Being pregnant will not prevent you from having dental treatment carried out, but most dentists prefer to defer any elective procedures (procedures that are not absolutely necessary) until after the pregnancy is over. This is particularly the case during the first and third trimesters. The taking of dental x-rays is also best avoided, if possible, during pregnancy, but experts agree that x-rays may be taken, where necessary, in the case of an emergency.

Why do my gums bleed every time I brush my teeth?

gingiva

What exactly is plaque and where is it found?

The dental hygienist recommended flossing. is it really any good.

Absolutely! Normal brushing doesn't clean in between the teeth fully. The most common and effective way of doing this is by flossing. The dental floss removes the plaque between teeth. It is important flossing is carried out correctly, and regularly, at least once a day. You should get your dentist to demonstrate for you. Some patients may need to use other methods, like small brushes that fit between the teeth, particularly if the spaces between the teeth are bigger than normal. Your dentist will advise you on the method most suitable for you.

Is tooth whitening a safe procedure?

Tooth whitening is a procedure that should be carried out by a dentist only. There are many reasons for this. Hydrogen peroxide is a substance that should be handled with care and this should only be done by a qualified dentist. Any staining on your teeth may be due to an underlying condition and your dentist may diagnose this. Further information is available here .

I think I have broken a piece of a filling in my tooth - what should I do?

Unfortunately sometimes fillings for whatever reason may fall out or become chipped or broken.

There are many reasons for this including biting down suddenly on something hard such as a hard boiled sweet. Symptoms can vary from none at all to sensitivity to hot and cold or tenderness on chewing. A lost filling will always feel much bigger to the tongue.

It is important to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. However if you cannot immediately access a dentist here are some  helpful tips .

  • If you are having sensitivity try avoiding eating or drinking in that area, similarly if it is painful on biting.
  • The use of toothpaste can help with the sensitivity by rubbing some fluoride toothpaste on the tooth in question.
  • As a temporary measure until you visit your dentist you may try and get some oil of cloves or a temporary filling kit from your pharmacy. However it is important that you attend your dentist as soon as possible to get the tooth restored to normal function.

Finally the use of over-the-counter painkillers from a chemist if is constantly painful are also helpful until you contact the dentist.

Don’t place any pain-killing tablets on the site of the tooth or its gum as this can cause burns to the gum.

My child has fallen on the pavement and has knocked out a front tooth. What should I do?

If a tooth is knocked out, the most important thing is to  replace it as soon as possible . The tooth should be picked up by the crown (the part visible in the mouth normally) only. You should not touch the root.

My dentist told me my tooth needs Root Canal Treatment. What does this mean?

My dentist told me my front tooth needs a 'crown'. what exactly is a crown.

A crown is like a jacket or cap that fits over a prepared tooth. It has the same shape as the original tooth. If a tooth is badly broken down, a crown is often the only option. By fully enclosing the tooth it is strong, and where indicated it can have an excellent appearance, looking just like a real tooth. It can be made of a metal alloy, of porcelain, or a combination of both. To allow the crown to fit, the tooth must be prepared first. This involves trimming the tooth down a little. Crowns are fixed in place with cement.

crown

While biting something hard, my crown came out - what should I do?

Crowns are special caps that are custom made to fit your tooth. They are normally placed on teeth that are broken down or had been decayed and may already have had a root canal treatment.

Sometimes the crown may come loose or even fall off. This can possibly happen if there is a problem underneath the crown such as decay or if the tooth has been traumatised.

It is important to make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. If you cannot get to the dentist immediately here are  some tips:

  • It is a good idea to hold onto to the crown whether it’s a temporary or permanent crown.
  • If the tooth is sensitive the use of a fluoride toothpaste will help by rubbing some toothpaste onto the tooth.
  • As a temporary measure until you visit your dentist you can also place some temporary filling material over the tooth to help the sensitivity.

Don’t place pain killing tablets on the site of the tooth or its gum as it can cause burns to the gum. If the tooth is painful to bite on the use over-the-counter painkillers may help until you see your dentist.

I have a very sore jaw joint, especially after waking up. Any ideas why?

This is a common problem which mainly affects adults. There are numerous causes including trauma, awkward biting and stress. This is due to excessive grinding (bruxing) of the teeth which can make the chewing muscles around the mouth tender and inflamed. It often happens subconsciously when you are asleep. It is important to contact your dentist if this problem arises.  Simple jaw exercises or the application of hot and cold may ease the tension or spasm in the muscles.  A splint that is like a night guard can also be made by your dentist to prevent your teeth contacting during grinding. This is a relatively straightforward procedure where your dentist takes impressions of your teeth.  Otherwise painkillers or other over-the-counter (OTC) remedies like anti-inflammatories may help relieve the symptoms.

I tend to suffer from mouth ulcers - how can these be treated?

  • chipped or broken fillings rubbing against e.g. the tongue
  • stress or even a change in the weather.

I have a gap near the side of my mouth and the dentist mentioned the option of a bridge. What is a bridge?

A classical dental bridge (now called a "fixed partial denture") is like two crowns, with a false tooth between them. The whole bridge is cemented in place, thus the missing tooth is replaced by the replica tooth between the two crowns. Bridges can be much more complicated than this and different types exist.

Sometimes, the bridge is glued to the backs of the teeth each side of the space, instead of putting a crown over the whole tooth. This is known as a 'Maryland Bridge'.

A friend of mine is having a dental implant placed. What is this?

How safe are amalgam / mercury fillings.

Dental amalgam has been used on patients for over 150 years. All available world-wide research indicates that amalgam is not harmful to health. This view is endorsed by the International Dental Federation, the International Association for Dental Research, the US Department of Health and Human Services, and many dental associations, including the American, British and Canadian.

No Government or reputable scientific, medical or dental body anywhere in the world accepts, on any published evidence, that dental amalgam is a hazard to health.

Dental research is ongoing in a wide variety of areas, including filling materials, in the search to provide the most up to date and safest treatments to the public at large.

The 12 best places to visit in Tyumen (the oldest siberian city)

It is the oldest city in siberia and has many points of interest. find out about the best places to visit in tyumen, russia..

VxMag

The first Siberian city was founded in 1586. Tyumen has been unofficially titled the oil and gas capital of Russia. The city’s population is 707 000 people, which continues to increase. According to RBC Holding, Tyumen is one of ten the most quick-growing towns in Russia. Don’t let the mention of oil-hungry businesspeople leave you thinking this is a dull, money-focused city, though. The city has a buzzing street life in summer and a couple of worthwhile sights that, taken together, will keep you entertained for a day or so.

Tyumen is also the stepping stone to the gorgeous old town of Tobolsk, a few hours’ bus or train ride away. Tyumen is a cultural, business, educational and administrative center of the Tyumen region. Most of the city’s population comprises young people under 35.

Here are always places to go in the evening and to see during weekends. Cozy cafes, luxurious restaurants, the best theatres and philharmonic concert hall, and museums reminding about the rich history of the city — all that is Tyumen. These are the best places to see in Tyumen, Russia.

1. Tyumen’s Holy Trinity Monastery

Tyumen’s Holy Trinity Monastery

Tyumen’s Holy Trinity Monastery is located in the historical center of Tyumen. It is just a few minutes walk from the Tura Embankment. The monastery was founded on the picturesque bank of the Tura River in 1616. Almost a century later, in 1708, the old wooden monastery was rebuilt with stone. Shortly after, the monastery was named Holy Trinity. The building process was conducted under the leadership of metropolitan Philophey Leschinsky. Later, he took monastic vows and lived in seclusion for the rest of his life. After he died in 1727, he was buried at the monastery’s entrance.

During the Soviet period, the monastery was used as a dormitory for a military platoon and the headquarters of the city’s water control system. The monastery was returned to the Tyumen diocese in 1995, but the first service was not held there until 2003. In 2005 the relic of prelate Philophey was uncovered and is now kept in the Peter and Paul Cathedral monastery. In 2007 a square was dedicated to Philophey near the monastery. Today Holy Trinity Monastery is open for everyone to see and tour while it continues to hold regular liturgical services.

2. Znamensky Cathedral

Znamensky Cathedral

The history of Znamensky Cathedral found its roots in the first half of the 17th century, when a small wooden chapel was first erected at the site of the current Cathedral. The old wooden chapel was replaced with the construction of a stone church which began on September 1st, 1768. The church’s previous name was given in honor of Mary, the Mother of God, and her icon within the church. The building was dedicated only 33 years later, in 1801. The church’s first stone building was painted white and consisted of the main chapel, a bell tower, a refectory, and a porch.

After the Revolution of 1917, the Cathedral was used as a transit prison. Still, between 1933 and 1941, the church was returned to the diocese. With the beginning of World War II, however, it was again taken over and used to house dislocated army forces. Finally, the Cathedral was returned to the eparchy. On June 19th, 1994, the clergy held a liturgical service for the first time. Today Znamensky Cathedral is a functioning church and one of the most beautiful symbols of Tyumen.

3. Tyumen Bolshoi Drama Theater

Tyumen Bolshoi Drama Theater

In 2008, The Tyumen Bolshoi Drama Theater got a new building built in record time for one year and eight months. With a 158-year history, the theater is the most prominent Drama Theater in Russia. The history of the Tyumen theater began even before the first building. It is known that in 1858 the St. Petersburg guest expressed his admiration for Amateur performances.

This fact was recorded, and the city’s theatrical history was reckoned from it. History tells us that in 1890, the first Guild merchant, an honorary citizen of the municipality Tekut’ev Andrei Ivanovich, founded a permanent theatre, which entered the town history called Tekut’evsky. Andrei Ivanovich, in love with the spectacle of dramatic scenes, supported theatre for 26 years.

In 1916, before his death, he bequeathed the theatre to the city. The City Council accepted the gift, and newspaper announcements began to inform about the performances not in the Tekut’ev’s theater but in the city theatre named Tekut’ev. After the October revolution, the theatre received the name of V. I. Lenin.

Under the leadership of the Petrograd director Valmar, it was staged such performances as “Idiot”, “the Power of Darkness”, “the Living corpse”, and “the Day”. In subsequent years the core of the repertoire included Russian and foreign classics, the best works of modern drama.

4. Saint George Ascension church

Saint George Ascension church

Through the parishioners’ efforts, this church was erected on the Tura River’s left bank. The church began as a stone two-storied building with a bell tower and two thrones: one is on the first floor in honor of Saint George and the other in honor of the Ascension of God is on the second.

After the October Revolution in 1929, the church was closed, and a workshop of tanners and chemists used its building. In 1934-35 the church became a dormitory for driving school students and combined operators. Later the building was under the governance of Tuymen’s fur coat fabric company.

Only in 1996 was the building returned to the diocese of Tobolsk and Tyumen. Two years later, services were resumed there. Step by step, in 2005, the bell tower was restored. In 2006, the church participated in the government program entitled “Cultural memorials restoration.” Now it is a functioning church that adorns the historical center of Tyumen.

5. Church of the Saviour

Church of the Saviour

The Church of the Saviour, also known as the Church of the Image of “The Saviour Not Made by Hands” or shorter Spasskaya Church, is a church in Tyumen, Tyumen Oblast, Russia, located at Lenin Street, 43, at a crossroad between the Chelyuskintsev Street. Built-in a late 18th-century Siberian Baroque and early 20th-century neorussian style, the building is one of Siberia’s oldest and most expressive churches, under monument protection.

It is believed that the early wooden church was raised in 1586 and reconstructed after several fires into a stable stone building in the late 17th century. The Church of the Saviour saw another two rebuildings in the late 19th century. However, after the 1917 October Revolution, the church was subject to confiscations of its property in 1922, and in 1930 was closed and became a momentary prison.

After the failed attempt to destroy the church two years later, it has been used as an archive and a library. The building storage material for the Tyumen Local Historical Museum is expected to be returned to the local eparchy in 2019.

Throughout the embankment, scattered monuments of famous people, life, and activity were somehow linked to Tyumen. The bridge was built in 1987 – five years after the collapse of an old wooden bridge in the exact location. The last name of the bridge was Peshehodniy (Pedestrian). Still, in 2003 local DJs Maria Kondratovich and Timur Shkval arranged an unusual contest called “The most unusual kiss”.

After this event, the city mayor Stepan Kirichuk offered to rename the bridge the Lovers’ Bridge. Then, on July 26th, newly married couples, the director of the Red Army Radio Station V. Bogodelov, and the city’s mayor performed an official ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the bridge.

8. Kolokolnikovs Estate Museum

Kolokolnikovs Estate Museum

The Kolokolnikovs Estate Museum is the only remaining classical merchant’s estate in Tyumen. The building’s facade combines classical and baroque architecture elements and traditional Siberian carving. The doors open to a luxurious, brightly lit hall with lofted ceilings and walls decorated with vivid paintings of the Kolokolnikovs family.

One painting depicts an old trade shop, representing the collective image of the city’s shops. Stepping through the doors of the Kolokolnikovs Estate transports one back to the unique atmosphere of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The permanent exhibit of the Kolokolnikovs Estate Museum is called “The History of the House”. It is dedicated to the history of the merchant families, such as the Ikonnikovs and the Kolokolnikovs. The exhibit will also explain the historical events in this house, one of which was the monumental meeting between the future Emperor Alexander II and the great Russian poet V. Zhukovsky in 1837. In 1919 the estate was used as the headquarters of Marshal V. Blyukher.

9. Gorodskaya Duma Museum

Gorodskaya Duma Museum

The building of the Tyumen regional Museum of Local Lore Gorodskaya Duma was built in the second half of the XIX century. It is a magnificent example of Russian provincial architecture. The high ladder and a stepped attic give the museum its slenderness, combined with a Corinthian portico and massive columns — the traditional buildings of public institutions and architectural elements.

The Window into the nature constant exhibition introduces the variety of Flora and Fauna of the Tyumen region and its ancient inhabitants. An integral part of the museum is a small paleontological Museum. The skeleton’s collection of mammoth, fossil bison, woolly rhinoceros, and cave bears is presented at the museum. In addition, visitors can get acquainted with the Botanical, Zoological, and entomological collections.

10. House Masharova Museum

House Masharova Museum

The museum is a monument to late 19th and early 20th-century Siberian architecture and is renowned for its luxurious décor.

Traditional musical events and temporary exhibitions are regularly organized in the House Masharova Museum. They take place in the chamber-like atmosphere of the welcoming hall of the merchant’s house.

The permanent exhibition called the Family Book tells the tale of the family’s life at the end of the 19th century. During a tour of the house built, you will see many authentic items of a past era and discover the etiquette of a traditional family from Tyumen.

11. Alexandrovsky Garden

Alexandrovsky Garden

The original name of the Alexandrovsky Garden is the Country Garden. The garden appeared on a vacant plot of land in 1851 when thousands of linden, birch, spruce, and pine trees were planted in the area of about 100 acres (40 000 m²) with the money of the merchant Ivan Ikonnikov.

The garden was named after the crown prince Alexander, the future Tsar Alexander II, who visited Tyumen on May 31st, 1837, during his journey through Siberia. After the October Revolution of 1917, the garden was abandoned until 1948, when a small portion of it was restored through the employees’ efforts of a ship-building plant.

The landscape of the garden was adorned with a pond, a small bridge built traversing the ravine, a shooting range, and a restaurant with a terrace. In the 1960s, it was abandoned again, and by the 1970s, it fell into disrepair. Later a development effort began on the garden’s premises with the construction of houses, a kindergarten, and garages. A road to the Profsoyuzny Bridge was also built through the park.

However, the renewal of the garden did not begin until 2007. Although ten times smaller than the original garden, the grounds were restored, and the Alexandrovsky Garden became its official name. The fountain was rebuilt as well as sculptures of citizens styled after the 19th century. Some statues include the Hussar, Ladies on a Walk, A Girl at Rest, and the Boy.

12. Rasputin Museum

Rasputin Museum

Grigory Rasputin was a friend of the last Russian emperor Nikolay II and his family. Rasputin is one of the most mysterious and exciting personalities of the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. In the 1900s, among Saint Petersburg’s high society, he had the reputation of the Tsar’s family friend, a religious elder, a seer, and a healer.

The exposition includes a cosmetic mirror, broken down in the middle that symbolizes the broken life of its owner, an icon of St. Simeon Verhotursky the Righteous, who is highly honored in Siberia, and the plate of the famous Kuznetsovky porcelain factory with the monogram of the empress, which Rasputin gave to his god-daughter Iraida Kolesnikova during her christening, an old Viennese chair from the Rasputin’s house. There is an authentic platband from the famous home of Rasputin, and the only thing remained of the building.

The bourgeois charm of Siberia's oil capital

dentist visit prsi

If you’re driving west across Russia from the Pacific Ocean, the first thing that you notice upon entering the city of Tyumen is the McDonalds. Tyumen has long been one of the only Siberian cities with a McDonalds restaurant. Although the fast-food giant has plans to open locations in nearby Novosibirsk and other regional cities, Siberia still contains one of the longest distances on earth outside of Africa where you can remain on a major highway and not see a McDonalds. Until you reach Tyumen, that is.

A stop in Tyumen provides an interesting glimpse into how modern Russia’s oil revenue has influenced Siberia’s oldest Russian city. Tyumen is a great stopover point on the Trans-Siberian Railroad and a short ride from Yekaterinburg (five hours) or Tobolsk (four hours).

In the 16th century, Russia started expanding eastward into parts of Central Asia ruled by the Tatars, an Islamic people who still live thoughout Russia. A band of Cossacks wrested control of Tyumen from the Tatars in 1580. Six years later, Russians established a fort in Tyumen on the Tura River.

For centuries, Tyumen vied with the nearby city of Tobolsk—once the official capital of Siberia—for the prestige of the region’s most important city. Tyumen won in the end, when the Trans-Siberian Railroad bypassed Tobolsk and was routed through this now oil-rich city.

Tyumen played an important role in Russian history during times of war. At the beginning of the Russian Civil War, the Bolshevik Red Army slowly pushed the White Army, commanded by Admiral Alexander Kolchak, into Siberia. Kolchak and his anti-Bolshevik forces holed up in Tyumen until the Red Army overtook them in January of 1918.

During the Second World War, many Russian industries were moved away from the front to Siberian cities. Tyumen had already become an industrial capital during the early Soviet era, and the city became an ideal spot to relocate Russia’s western factories. As Nazi forces approached Russia in 1941, the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin was sent from the Lenin Mausoleum in Moscow’s Red Square by train to the Tyumen State Agricultural Academy for safekeeping. In 1945, Lenin’s body was shipped back to Moscow.

Some of the factories relocated to Tyumen during wartime remained in the city. The discovery of oil in the region catapulted Siberia’s oldest Russian settlement to further prosperity. Modern Tyumen is a vibrant city with a number of universities and a revamped center well-suited for exploration by foot.

Start your walking tour around central Tyumen on Ulitsa Respubliki. The city’s main drag has fine pedestrian walkways and leads wanderers past an impressive collection of tsarist-era buildings that recall Tyumen’s importance in the beginning of Russia’s colonization of Siberia.

From the southeastern end of Ul. Respubliki, head north toward the Tura River and take a brief side trip onto Ul. Ordzhonikidze to visit the Fine Arts Museum (47 Ul. Ordzhonikidze) which houses exhibits of classical Russian and Soviet art as well as traditional bone carving and works produced by the native people who live in the far north of Tyumen Oblast.

Back on Ul. Respubliki, you’ll soon see the city’s requisite Lenin statue by the local government buildings. A block away, opposite Lenin, is Tyumen’s city park, a delightful place to walk or hop on one of its amusement rides.

Most Siberian cities developed under the watchful eyes of the atheist Soviet regime and churches are usually not Siberia’s strongpoint. But this isn’t true in four-centuries-old Tyumen. Strolling up Ul. Respubliki, you’ll soon come to the Church of the Saviour (41 Ul. Lenina) and the Znamensky Cathedral (13 Ul. Semakova). Each of these stunning Baroque-influenced churches are located right off Ul. Respubliki and were built in the late 18th century.

Tyumen is also famous for its historic wooden houses. Heading further up Ul. Respubliki, stop to wander around some of the side streets and snap photos of these ornate wooden structures which provide a glimpse back in time. Near the Tura River, you’ll pass a civil war monument in remembrance of the Tyumen natives who died fighting the White Army and the Tyumen State Agricultural Academy (7 Ul. Respubliki) an impressive building in its own right where Lenin was stored during the Second World War.

Near the end of Ul. Respubliki, take a walk over the Tura River on the Lover’s Bridge, a suspension bridge open to foot traffic only that has become one of Tyumen’s iconic sights. The other side of the river is a great place to see more of Tyumen’s signature wooden houses as well as take in the churches scattered around the city center.

Save the best for last and visit the Trinity Monastery (10 Ul. Kommunisticheskaya) at the end of Ul. Respubliki. A white wall surrounds the monastery, giving it the appearance of a mini-kremlin, and the golden onion domes of the 18th century churches within should not be missed.

Although navigating Tyumen is straightforward enough, the St. Petersburg-based travel company OSTWEST can arrange a city tour in Tyumen and the surrounding countryside.
