Before Your Marella Cruise - Frequently Asked Questions

Question – How do I book a Marella cruise?

Answer – Booking a cruise couldn’t be easier, you can book directly with  Marella Cruises here .

Question – Is a Marella cruise expensive?

Answer – A Marella cruise is excellent value for money. You get to visit multiple countries in one cruise, and all your flights and transfers are included.

A Marella cruise is all-inclusive as standard, so all drinks and non-speciality food are included. Food and drink will be covered later in this post. For the full rundown on what a Marella cruise includes read our post here .

Question – Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

Answer – Yes you must have a passport with at least 6 months remaining before its expiry date.

Question – Do I need travel insurance?

Answer – It’s essential to have travel insurance in place that is cruise-specific. Make sure you get your travel insurance as soon as you book your cruise. The level of cover differs depending on what company you use. Things such as; free cancellation for illness and missed ports should be things you look for. The main reason for insurance is medical emergency, which we will touch on later in this post.

Question – Will I need any visas for my cruise?

Answer – This depends on where your cruise starts and ends and of course where you visit in between. If you are not sure there is always lots of useful information on the Government website.

Question – Cruising – is it just for old people?

Answer – There is no doubt that some cruise lines do attract an older clientele, but Marella cater for all age groups.

Question – Can I cruise with my children?

Answer – Marella cruises currently have 5 ships in their fleet. Marella Discovery ,  Marella Discovery 2 ,  Marella Explorer ,  Marella Explorer 2  and  Marella Voyager , the only ‘adult only’ ship is Marella Explorer 2. All the child-friendly ships have kids clubs.

Question – Will I get seasick?

Answer – Everyone is different, but if you are susceptible to motion sickness choosing the right cabin is essential. Choose as close to the middle of the ship and as low a deck as possible, as this is where you will feel the least amount of movement. There are also lots of sea-sickness remedies. Including eating green apples or ginger, plus medications are also available, you can even get wristbands that will help. You can read our how to avoid/how to treat seasickness post here .

What to Pack for a Marella Cruise - Frequently Asked Questions

Question – Is there a limit on how many suitcases I can take on my Marella cruise?

Answer – As Marella is Fly cruises your luggage limitation is dictated by the airline. For TUI this is 20kg per person, or 23kg if you book a premium seat on the plane.

Question – What sort of clothes do I need to pack?

Answer – The type of clothes depends on where in the world you are travelling and what time of year you are travelling. We will discuss cruise dress codes  later in this post.

Question – Can I pack a hairdryer and curling tongs/straighteners?

Answer – Yes you can. All cabins come equipped with a hairdryer but you are welcome to bring your own. We will talk more about cabin facilities later in the post.

Question – Can I pack alcohol to drink onboard?

Answer – You are not permitted to take your own alcohol. If you do it will be confiscated and returned to you at the end of the cruise.

Question – Can I take an iron onboard the ship?

Answer – Taking an iron is strictly prohibited, see next section for an alternative.

Question – How does my luggage get to the ship?

Answer – With the majority of  Marella cruises, once you have checked in at the airport your luggage will be taken straight to your cruise cabin. However, at a few ports, you have to reclaim your luggage at the airport and take it to the transfer coach who will then take it to your cabin on arrival at the port. You will be given this information when you check in at the airport.

Question – How will the porters know what cabin we are staying in?

Answer – You can either print off your luggage labels at home, or Marella will provide them when you check in for your outbound flight. You just attach them to your suitcase.

What will be in my cabin on a Marella Cruise - Frequently Asked Questions

Question – Does Marella provide towels?

Answer – Yes Marella not only provides bath towels, hand towels and washcloths but they also provide beach/pool towels too!

Question – You stated that taking an iron is prohibited, how do I iron my clothes?

Answer – Unfortunately there is no iron in your cabin but Marella does provide a laundry service, you can find out what that will cost here . Another great way to prevent creasing is to roll your clothes, rather than folding them. It doesn’t always work, but one to give a go!

Question – Are the cabins all the same?

Answer – There are lots of cabin choices, from inside cabins with no windows, all the way up to plush suites, some even come with their own piano! Prices are based on the level of comfort, size and position on the ship. We have a number of  Marella cabin tours available on our playlist here .

Question – Are the cabins basic?

Answer – Regardless of the category of cabin you book they all come with an ensuite bathroom, toiletries, towels, coffee and tea-making facilities, a TV, air conditioning, a telephone, a safe, a hairdryer and a comfortable bed.

Question – What is a muster drill?

Answer – The muster drill is a health and safety presentation that you watch on the TV in the comfort of your cabin.  It explains the safety measures that as a passenger you have to adhere to and what you need to do in the case of an emergency.  It will also show you how to put on a life jacket and how you will be alerted to an emergency by the use of the ships-horn. On the inside of your cabin door is a map outlining where you will need to go, (your muster station) in the case of an emergency. To complete the muster procedure, you go to your designated muster station, where your key card will be scanned to show that you have completed the muster procedure.

Question – What is a Cruise key card?

Answer – A  cruise key card looks like a credit card, it has your name on it and has multiple uses including opening your cabin door, making on-ship purchases, and is scanned whenever you leave the ship so the cruise line knows who is on or off the ship at any given time.

Question – Can I do my own laundry?

Answer – As we said earlier there is no self-service laundry but if you want to rinse out some items to freshen them up there is a retractable washing line in the shower cubicle. Make sure you pack some clothes pegs!

Question – Can I keep up with what’s going on in the world while away cruising?

Answer – All cabin TV’s have live news channels as well as sports news channels. They also have films and series box sets on demand, which are free to watch.

Question – My favourite drink is not on the standard all-inclusive what can I do?

Answer – You can either upgrade to the premium all-inclusive drinks package, which depending on the cruise can be as little as £10 per person, per day, or you can pay for the premium drinks individually. It’s easy to work out what will be best for you by checking out our Marella drinks post as mentioned above.

Question – Will I put on weight?

Answer – That is entirely up to you. First-time cruisers tend to go a bit mad with all the food that is available onboard, but the more you cruise the more you realise that eating nine meals a day is not really necessary.

Marella cruises entertainment - frequently asked questions.

Question – Will I get bored on a cruise?

Answer – Entertainment ranges from daily quizzes, game shows, live music, west-end style shows, arts and crafts and so much more. Or you can just relax and enjoy the various swimming pools and hot tubs on board. You can read our full Marella Voyager entertainment guide here .

Question – Is all the entertainment on board free?

Answer – There are only three things entertainment wise that you have to pay for. One is the twice-weekly shows in The Exchange which currently costs £14.95, but that does include 3 speciality cocktails that are only available at this venue and are not part of the drinks package. The second is the ever-popular cruise favourite, Bingo, but of course this does come with a chance of winning some decent cash prizes. Last up is the casino which again does come with the chance of hitting the jackpot.

Question – What if I just want some quiet time?

Answer – There are numerous areas around all 5 ships where you can sit, read a book, do some arts and crafts, or just do nothing at all. It’s your cruise you can do pretty much whatever you want.

Question – Is smoking allowed in any of the entertainment areas?

Answer – Smoking is strictly prohibited in all the inside areas of the ship including your cabin. There is however, designated smoking areas in some of the outside spaces.

Port Days on a Marella Cruise - Frequently Asked Questions

Question – Do I have to get off the ship on a port day?

Answer – What you do on a port day is entirely up to you. Sometimes it’s nice to stay on the ship as it will be far quieter, which provides you with the opportunity to explore areas of the ship that you might not have seen.

Question – If I do get off the ship in port can I do my own thing or do I have to book an excursion?

Answer – Again it’s your cruise and you are free to choose, however, if you are going to explore areas that are a distance from the ship make sure you are back in plenty of time for sail away.

Question – What if I am late back to ship?

Answer – The beauty of booking an  excursion with the cruise line is that if you are delayed the ship will wait for you. However, if you are travelling independently and you return after the advertised sail away time the Captain is well within their rights to leave you behind, as a delayed departure could cost the cruise line thousands.

Luggage allowance

I know the luggage allowance has dropped from 23kg to 20kg but a friend of my Mum's has been told it's 15kg on her Thomson's invoice.

She has asked for clarification at a Thomson's travel agent and been told that with some of the ships it's only 15kg.

I'm sure this is not correct. I'm going on the Celebration this April and it definitely states 20kg on my invoice.

Can anyone clarify?

We had 20 kg on our cruise, but only had 15kg on our hotel holiday last year. I have never heard of only having 15kg on a cruise

No neither have I. I thought it was 20kg on a cruise and 15kg on a non-cruise package holiday.

If your Mum's friend would like to send their booking reference across to us at [email protected] , we can check what details are on the booking for them.

Hi Jem,   If your Mum's friend would like to send their booking reference across to us at [email protected] , we can check what details are on the booking for them.   Thanks, Lauren

Lauren - thanks. I'll suggest she does that.

However for clarification here, are all Thomson ships 20kg (unless you pay for the increased luggage allowance) or are some different?

Luggage allowance does not have anything to do with what ship you are sailing on. (I do wish agents would get their info right:mad:).

However, it can depend on whether the flight is operated by Thomson Airways or not (Monarch is one example I know of that had a 15kg allowance).:(

20kg and 7kg for hand luggage on all cruises. Extra 5kg per person can be purchased but no case must weigh more that 23kg. Also weight allowance can be spread over party, e.g. 1 x 5kg between two or 2 x 5kg and spread weight over three cases.

Oops - Everybody, including Thomson Cares, has jumpoed on while I have been composing.:D

Our hand luggage was 5kg, according to my paperwork

However, it can depend on whether the flight is operated by Thomson Airways or not (Monarch is one example I know of that had a 15kg allowance).:(   20kg and 7kg for hand luggage on all cruises.

This is where it's confusing.

So if it's a cruise it's 20kg but not if it's a Monarch flight to get to the cruise where it's 15kg.

Don't know where you are flying from but I know that sometimes, in the past, Monarch has been used from Edinburgh but Thomson from Glasgow and we have almost been caught out as Edinburgh is our nearest airport and they were definitely only allowing 15kg.

Hi jem16   Don't know where you are flying from but I know that sometimes, in the past, Monarch has been used from Edinburgh but Thomson from Glasgow and we have almost been caught out as Edinburgh is our nearest airport and they were definitely only allowing 15kg.
It's my Mum's friend so don't know for sure. However as she lives in Glasgow I supect it's Glasgow.

It's usually Thomson from Glasgow. Strange though about the weight. It wasn't a late booking by any chance was it?, because I've heard that late bookings sometimes only get 15kg (irrespective of carrier) but not sure if it's only for land based holidays or cruises as well.:(

I know that our e-tickets on our last holiday actually had the proper information in tiny print re weight on the third page of eight pages. Someone found it on their paperwork and posted it on the forum so I had a proper look at my paperwork and lo and behold there it was hidden away.

I had to point out the hand luggage allowance to a well-seasoned check-in assistant at Glasgow in October when she decided she didn't know the allowance and that I was going on a cruise, even though it was plastered all over the paperwork. For pointing out her error we were separated by the aisle even though we were second in the queue when it opened. She obviously didn't want to be on duty early in the morning that day.:)

Just a point - I have just looked at the current Thomson brochure and in the A-Z guide at the back on page 209 and 210 it explains in detail the Luggage and mentions airlines other than Thomson and also the hold and hand luggage weights. Might be worth a look.:)

Hi jem16   It's usually Thomson from Glasgow. Strange though about the weight. It wasn't a late booking by any chance was it?,
Not entirely sure but as she mentioned it last week I'm assuming she booked last week. It's a cruise in March so I wouldn't count that as a late booking.

Me again. Just a quick one. Have looked at Thomson's site and in March all flights from Glasgow are by Thomson Airways. Also, they are all quoting a hold allowance of 20kg with the option to purchase the extra 5kg.

Perhaps, at they stated earlier in this thread, it would be an idea to send the details to Thomson Cares so that the matter can be clarified.

Good luck.:)

Sailing on the Dream in 3 days time :D however I'm struggling to get my packing down to 23Kg which is stressing me out!!:( This is a 2 weeks trip or just over. While I know there's a laundry service I like to wear different clothes not just cleaner ones. Anyone know how strict Thomson are on luggage allowance at check in. Cheers

Unfortunately its a health and safety issue must not exceed the 23Kg:( I have never noticed anyone over so cant help with that, but don't forget you get 7Kg in hand luggage:D, I normally pack my summer outfit inc sandals so I can change as soon as I am on the ship. It doesn't seem such a problem coming back as your cases go straight to the airport but that was in Barbados.

Have a great time and look after her as we are on in three weeks:cool:

The crazy thing is we have 25KG hold luggage coming back and 5KG hand luggage that's printed on our holiday details.

That's a new one for me! Obviously adds up the same but Ts & Cs state no one piece of luggage over 23? & all cruise holidays have 7Kg hand luggage. So good luck hope all OK.

A warning for any Thomson passengers flying out of Malaga this Summer from Discovery 2 sailings - luggage is always weighed (including hand luggage) and weight limits very strictly adhered to.

how do they go on then with the airlines that have 30kg bag limits ????? ,how do they handle overweight bags that people have paid excess baggage charges on ????

davecttr

Even if you weigh your case and it is exactly 23Kg your scales might well differ from the ones at the airport, both here and abroad. You should really aim for about a Kg less than the allowance to give yourself a safety margin. Thomson set the allowance but you never know if the check in clerk at the airport is feeling stroppy that day!.

Men find it easier. I can pack for a 14 nighter including a dinner suit and the total comes to about 16Kg.

You could try the old technique of laying everything out on the bed and then putting half of it away again because you won't need it, honest.

Otherwise pay for excess baggage.

Can only speak as we have found and everyone we have seen with a bag weighing over 23kg have been asked to put the excess in another bag (would assume at no charge if you had paid for an increased allowance).

You just take two case's 😉

im talking 30kg allowance PER CASE (long haul, australia, canada etc, non thomson)

No long haul flights (apart from one Delta flight a week to the US) from Malaga which is the airport I was referring to.

We always buy an extra 5kgs and I have 23kgs (the max in any one case) and hubby has 22kgs - you can split the extra 5kg As has been said if you read your booking confirmation it will tell you what everyone is saying that 23kg is max hold load (unless you have 2 suitcases each) and if cruising 7kg in hand luggage per traveller They will allow a lady a handbag as well

The 23kg is a health and safety rule for EU countries

I'm on this cruise and as you have 6 days at sea you won't need off ship clothes Most people take one weeks evening wear and wear them twice and the same with day wear off the ship With 6 days at sea you will only need swimwear and cover ups during the day Don't worry you'll have a great time this is our third time on a Dream TA

Does a Thomson cruise holiday have 5kg or 7kg of hand luggage? Busy packing as leaving for Gatwick tomorrow and really not sure. I've left it a bit late I know!

7 check the brochure for all cruise passengers

Well that's a good question because my ticket says Gatwick to Montego Bay 23kg hold and 7kg hand. However rtn flight from Malaga to Gatwick says 25 hold & 5kg hand!! Any issues I'll show them the paperwork.

I have just printed boarding cards for a cruise to Dubrovnik on Thursday and it says 20 kg. That's no problem for me, but my husband always takes too much!

Presuming it's a Thomsons flight each way, the allowance should be 7kg hand luggage - however, if the return flight is a different carrier there may be a difference.

Don't assume that Thomsons staff, reps and local agents know the correct weight allowances - many regulars hereabouts can testify otherwise !!!

Exactly. On our recent cruise the Thomson staff at the airport couldn't confirm either way

I've had that from shop staff - they started asking one another, couldn't agree, then resorted to hunting through a brochure for the specifics.

Doesn't actually fill the potential customer with confidence !!!

We have paid for extra up to 25kg but after buying extra weight thomson told us we are going with alba star on way out from glasgow but thomson on the way back . So we dont know what to do take the extra weight to glasgow airport and get hassle from albastar reps or take less and give up on the extra weight we paid for also we dont know what the hand baggage weight is allowed through alba star because they wont answer my messages help!!!!!!!!

Persevere with telephone and email that's all you can do unless you booked through a travel agent. Luckily we were ok with the hand luggage as we kept it under 5kg with Thomson but apparently we could have taken 7kg. At Gatwick the Thomson staff couldn't confirm when we asked but told us to "aim at somewhere in the middle and we should be OK". Yeh right!!

marella cruise luggage allowance

COMMENTS

  1. Marella Cruises Luggage

Marella Cruises Luggage Allowance. Your luggage allowance for a Marella cruise depends on the airline you're flying with. Most cruises are booked in a package with a TUI Airways flight, where guests are permitted a single hold bag each weighing up to 20kg. Under 2s have a reduced allowance of up to 10kg.

  2. Your Questions

For Cruise & Stay holidays, travellers aged between 2 and 12 are classed as children. Infants under 6 months old are not permitted to travel on our cruises. Just so you know, Marella Explorer 2 is exclusively for those aged 17 and over, and we have a handful of itineraries on other ships that are adults-only, too.

  3. Luggage Allowance on TUI Airways

You get 20kg hold luggage included when you book a Marella Cruises and Marella Cruise & Stay holiday and fly with TUI Airways. Under 2s get a 10kg allowance, too, and you can store a folding pushchair in the hold for free. You can share your allowance with others on your booking, as long as no single bag weighs more than 25kg.

  4. Before you go

You can reserve your cabin from £65 up to 15 days before you go. Simply choose your cabin at the time of booking or you can request your cabin number after you have booked by calling 0203 451 2688 between 9am-7pm Monday to Friday, 9am-6pm Saturday or 10am-5pm Sunday. 5. Marella Cruises

Answer - With the majority of Marella cruises, once you have checked in at the airport your luggage will be taken straight to your cruise cabin. However at a few ports you have to reclaim your luggage at the airport, take it to the transfer coach who will then take it to your cabin on arrival at the port.
