Duke’s nose trek: how to climb whangaroa harbour’s well-kept secret.

  • Post published: 14 June 2015
  • Post category: New Zealand / North Island / Oceania/South Pacific

While preparing the itinerary for our trip to the North of New Zealand , I randomly found photos of Whangaroa Harbour taken from the top of Duke’s Nose. The views were fantastic with many hiking options, so I added Duke’s Nose trek to our list of things to do in the Bay of Islands region. We hiked all the way back to Totara and had a splendid day in this underrated region.

Summary Distance: 7 km Time: 4 hours Difficulty: moderate

Disclaimer : The hiking time and difficulty are based on our experience. We are experienced hikers with a good level of fitness, used to hiking long distances and scrambling. We possess good navigation skills and use a Garmin watch * with a GPS navigation map. Always check the park alerts and notes, as trail conditions change over time, which may affect the hike’s level of difficulty.

Whangaroa Harbour - Wairaku Track

Our plan was to drive to Totara North, catch a boat to Lane Cove, climb Duke’s Nose trek and hike back to Totara.

We initially wanted to do that in half a day, but I am glad we finally allowed more time for the walk as Duke’s Nose trek is so beautiful that it would have been silly not to take breaks to admire the views. It’s never mentioned in the best hikes of New Zealand , which makes it a quiet and peaceful place to admire the views.

Whangaroa Harbour, the start of Duke’s Nose trek

Whangaroa Harbour is not on the usual list of popular tourist New Zealand Northland destinations. After checking it out, I believe it is a hidden gem in the region . The scenery is outstanding with kilometres of wild, untouched land and spectacular cliffs. The woman we met at the Whangarei tourist information centre mentioned she likes kayaking in this area. We did not have time for that, but I have no doubt that it would be a great activity there!

We booked a water taxi from Totara North to Lane Cove ($20 per person, phone or text Tony on 027 680 5588). Exploring the harbour by boat was an amazing way to start discovering the beauty and the magnitude of the unspoilt harbour. Vegetation is very dense, and the few cabins we could see now and then were very isolated (no road – only accessible by boat). I was very excited to start hiking in such a remote and stunning area.

As we were approaching Lane Cove, Tony pointed to the Duke’s Nose overlooking the harbour: an easily recognisable rock that – from a certain angle – looks like the profile of a man’s face.

There is no wharf at Lane Cove, but we luckily got off the boat without getting our shoes wet thanks to Tony’s skills and the high tide. Then Tony went away, leaving us in the wild. We only met three other hikers exploring Duke’s Nose trek that day.

Duke’s Nose trek (also named Kairara Rocks hike)

Duke’s Nose trek is only 500m one way. More info on the track .

The route to Duke’s Nose starts just behind the hut. The forest is very nice, with big ferns and plenty of vegetation that we are not used to seeing.

Up to the bottom of the rock, it is not a hard walk although it gets very slippery after wet weather. The last 10 metres are much more challenging as it is very close to rock climbing up a cliff face, with a few metres at the beginning that are nearly vertical. It was harder than I expected, and I was glad I trained to fight my fear of heights.

trek to dukes nose

I clearly underestimated Duke’s Nost trek.

I had learnt during the past few years to control my height phobia, and this was a good exercise to measure my progress… Although the rock has cracks and bumps and there is a chain to make the climb easier, it was not simple at all with our big slippery hiking boots.

However, Duke’s Nose trek is worth the effort: I loved the feeling of accomplishment once I reached the top. What a great surprise to find a large and flat area up there! I was able to enjoy the 360° view without thinking too much about the height. The scenery of the harbour and the cliffs below us was breathtaking. We spent at least 45 min at the top, and I could have stayed a lot longer if I did not have in mind that our lunch was in the car…  parked approximately 3 hours from there!

trek to dukes nose

Going down was even harder than going up, not from a technical point of view but more from an “I-don’t-want-to-look-down” point of view, and because I did not want to abseil. In total, it took us 2 hours to return from Lane Cove (with many photo breaks and 45mn at the top).

Wairakau Stream Track back to Totara North Wharf in Whangaroa Harbour

6km one way. More info on the track .

After climbing Dukes Nose, we tramped Wairakau Stream back to Totara North wharf where we caught the boat in the morning – and parked our car. The route goes up and down, and the only difficulty would be to cross the stream without getting too wet. Waterproof hiking shoes * are recommended.

trek to dukes nose

I loved this tramp for its diversity: we started with great views of the bay and then went through very different types of vegetation: fern forest, along the mangrove, across the stream, in a large grassy area… It was continuously changing!

It took us around 3 hours to go back to our car (again with photo stops and snack breaks).

Spend the night in Whangaroa

We didn’t have time to stay for the night, but it would have been lovely. There aren’t that many hotels in Whangaroa so make sure you book in advance. Click here to see availabilities *.

Where are Whangaroa Harbour and Duke’s Nose trek?

W hangaroa Harbour is located in the northwest of Auckland (4-hour drive), on the east coast of the Far North district, between Bay of Islands and Doubtless Bay.

Duke’s Nose Trek & camping in Lonavala

onacheaptrip at dukes nose trek

It’s been a while since I was confined to the four walls of my room. COVID-19 rarely allowed me to go a few meters away from my locality, and if it taught me something extremely crucial other than valuing life, it was the value of thoughts. The thoughts that process through my nerves and bloom my soul, the thoughts about lying near a camp covered under a starry night. As the lockdown restrictions eased up a bit, I decided, I’d rather venture out and be in the mountain thinking of home than at home thinking of the mountain.

enjoying views of Sahyadris from dukes nose

I was searching for someplace near Pune where I could camp, where there is not much crowd at night. I did not wanted to drive too far, neither wanted to trek for long. I came across this place called Dukes Nose Lonavala in an Instagram story and thought it could be just the perfect place for me.

Dukes Nose as seen from side

Locally known as ‘Nagphani’, Duke’s Nose is named after Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley (1st Duke of Wellington) whose nose resembled the shape of the cliff. Apart from the breathtaking views this place provides, it is also popular for thrilling activities like rock climbing, valley crossing, slacklining and highlining which attract many adventure enthusiasts throughout the year.

How to reach Duke’s Nose from Pune/Mumbai/Lonavala

The cheapest and most convenient way to reach the Duke’s Nose is via railways. The nearest railway station to Duke’s Nose is Lonavala railway station which is well connected to Pune, Mumbai and other parts of the country. Kurvande, the base village of Duke’s Nose is located around 6 kms from the railway station. As such there is no public transport for Kurvande, one can either take an auto or walk all the way to the village. The exact map location of parking is Kurvande .

What I would suggest is to rent a bike from Pune/Mumbai (around 300 INR/per day). The road trip would add more fun to your entire journey.

How to reach Dukes Nose from Pune

Various trek routes for Duke’s Nose

There are mainly 2 trekking routes to reach the top of Duke’s Nose.

1) The Kurvande Village Route : This trek route is the easier one of the two. The initial trail is mostly flat until you reach a point from where you can choose either of the mountains to ascend from. Trekking through the left side mountain is a bit tricky as one has to trek along the ridge, where a small slip and you will find yourselves deep in the Sahyadri valley. For beginners, I would recommend the right side mountain. Both mountains are connected through a small trail at the top.  In total, it takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach Duke’s nose top from the start point.

2) Khandala Railway station route : This trek route is longer compared to Kurvande. From Khandala station, one needs to go towards the Tata Power Plant (2 kms ) which is the start point of the trek. From here, keep looking for the arrows so you don’t miss the route. In total, it takes around 2 to 2.5 hours to reach the top from this route.

Difficult level of Duke’s Nose Trek

I would rate Duke’s nose trek as an easy trek in terms of difficulty if you are trekking from the Kurvande Village and would highly recommend it to the beginners. If you are doing the trek in monsoon, just be extra cautious as the route becomes a little slippery. If you are looking for the long trek and more adventure, you can take the Khandala railway station route.

My Journey to Duke’s Nose Lonavala

The year 2020 has been tough for almost everyone. No one would have ever imagined that something like this would ever happen. One of the most impacted industries from Covid 19 is surely the travel industry. Thinking about families who just used to earn their livelihood from tourism, it makes me feel very sad. How hard would have been the last few months for them? Things have started to improve a bit, a big thanks to the hard work the entire medical industry has been putting in.

Being confined to four walls of my room from the last 6 months, finally, I was so looking forward to camp somewhere high in Sahyadris where there is little or no crowd. Duke’s nose being so near to Pune, I thought it would be the perfect place to start my travel journey again. I along with my few friends started from Pune around 2:30 PM.

Me with kid on dukes nose trek

We reached the Base village Kurvande at around 4:00 pm. There is ample parking space at the start point. The trail is well marked and one can see the Duke’s nose all along the way so chances of getting lost are almost nil. It was so exciting to trek after so long, oh God how much I missed the mountains!! I cried of happiness, the happiness of being back in my world.

The initial route was almost flat until we reached the point where one has to choose from either of the mountains to ascend from. And we choose the more adventurous route, the left side mountain which also has the temple at the top. Trekking through this mountain is a bit tricky as it is a ridge where one side is the deep valleys all along. If trekking in monsoon, I would recommend to either avoid this route or be extra cautious.

Within no time we made it to the top and it was now time to enjoy the sunset. It was a bit cloudy, but the hues of the sunset were just splendid. As such there is nothing much at the top except the Lord Shiva temple but the nearby views are beautiful.  We decided to set up our tent near the temple. We had brought packed dinner knowing that there won’t be anything available at the top.

As it started to get dark, I could see the city lights in the near vicinity. The winds had just picked up, and the temperature had just started dipping. It was a cold night. But that did not stop me from lying down and appreciating the views of the sky full of stars. What a feeling it was!! It reminded me of all the fun I had during the Rai-ling plateau camping.

We woke up around 6:00 am, and the sky colour had just started to turn orange. The sunrise views were breathtaking. After enjoying the sunrise, it was time to explore the other mountain and the tail. It started getting a bit crowded as adventure junkies had turned up for various activities like valley crossing and rock climbing.

The trail to reach the tail of the mountain is very tricky and if you are a beginner, you can rather avoid going there. On a clear day, one can see Rajmachi Fort and various other Sahyadri peaks from the top. It took us around 1.5 hours to 2 hours to completely explore the mountain.

Best time to visit Dukes Nose Lonavala

Undoubtedly, the rainy months of July, August and September is the best time to visit the Duke’s Nose as the surroundings are lush green and the weather is extremely pleasant. But remember, for the most part of the day the surroundings may not be visible from the fort due to the heavy fog. For those looking to enjoy the nearby views and also camping at night, October to February would be a perfect time.

Food and stay option at Dukes Nose

As such, there is no stay option and generally, people visit this place for a day trip. The only option is to set up your own tent either at the top or on the flat plateau which comes on the way to the tail. You need to carry your own food as there is nothing available at the base village neither at the top.

enjoying chai pakora at Dukes nose trek

It was now time to start with the descend and wrap up yet another exciting journey. We made it to the base village in an hour and eventually Pune by afternoon. Though it was a short trek, it was filled with a lot of memories. I am surely going to visit this place soon. For more details of what we explored you can watch the below video

TREK TO NAGPHANI (DUKES NOSE)

Photo of Sambhaji Patil

A Trek to Nagphani is well known vantage focuses in Lonavala later known Duke’s Nose after Duke wellington, is cliff at Khandala. This cliff is pointed like a snake pointed head portion (hood) and hence it is known as Nagphani.

(Nag means snakes and phani means hood). This is marvellous trekking spot between Khandala and Lonavala. Adventurous trekking is highly essential to reach Duke’s nose via Khandala.  Climbing from Khandala is good gateway for adventurous trekking that can be done in 4 hours and get down towards Kurvande village in just 45 minutes.

    Trek Information

Height: 3200 feet         Trek level: very easy         Trek route: Jungle trail        Time for trek: 2 hours max

To reach Nagphani nearest spot is Lonavala or Khandala which is well connected from Mumbai, Pune, Nashik which is further trail route from other state. It is around 12 kms away from Lonavala. One can hire autorickshaw if private vehicle not available to reach Nagphani base village Kurvande. Once reached the base village, trek is a short one and easy with clear path.

It can be reached via road also from express way. Nagphani can been seen from Express way towards right side.

For me trekking is something which you can not take off from your passion. One day my partner wanted to do short trek which is near to Lonavala so I dragged list to decide which is shortest one day trail. List appears with the name of Nagphani. This name is supernatural phenomenon in its own. We actually were so curious to know about this trek and decided to trek here on coming weekend. Being a distance of 2 hours I normally prefer to travel on my bike. For bike the distance is not more than 2 hours, so we decide to do Nagphani trek on Sunday.

We left from Mumbai and reached Kurvande village at 10am which is base point of trek and parked bike at base village. At base village there is direction board of towards Nagphani temple. Trek route is simple and clear from base village of Kurvande. After walk of 30 min there is steep climbing. It is easy but for beginners it may find bit difficult. After crossing this you will pass from dense ropes and narrow road in between the small trees.

There are no hotels or any stalls on the way so make sure to carry own stuff before start. Keep drinking water which will keep your body hydrated throughout the trek. Some peoples do camping also on this route. After trek of 2 hours you will reach at peak point where there is small temple of Lord Shiv with shape of Snake with head. If you want to climb dukes  pinnacle then you should come with proper safety gears of climbing as the climb is 90 degree. You can relax for sometime on this peak as wind is more at top can also do some photoshoot.

Dukes nose is popular for Rappelling , Trekking, camping, Rock Climbing. If you want to experience this adventure activity then do come with trek organisers. After this wonderful trek we started descending towards base  where we started.  It took us 45min to reach at base. Without wasting further time we left for Khandala and had lunch there and further left for Mumbai.

Most of people will prefer to do this trek on monsoon to witness foggy and peaceful climate. People do come in winter and summer for one day trek.

Do explore the world of mountain because mountain is calling you and you must go.

Thank you for reading and do follow me by mail for further adventurous trek. This is my blog link.

Sunset Point, Duke Point

Duke's nose, lonavala overview.

Duke’s Nose is a popular viewpoint located about 7 kilometres from Lonavala. It is hugely famous for hiking and its picturesque location. Tourists often visit the landmark to get a panoramic view of the beautiful Sahyadri Ranges, the splendid valleys and the dense forests that cover the Sahyadris. The landmark often serves as an ideal picnic spot for tourists exploring Lonavala.

The name Duke's Nose was derived from the Duke of Wellington, whose nose resembled the shape of the cliff. Locals call it Naagphani or the Cobra's Hood going by the shape of the cliff. A panoramic view of Duke's Nose is visible from the Sunset Point in Khandala. People travelling from Mumbai to Pune or vice versa often take a pit stop here to get a mesmerizing view of the valley.

Hiking the dukes nose track (kairara rock) northland nz.

Hiking the Dukes Nose Track Blog Northland New Zealand

The Dukes Nose, or Kairara Rock, is one of the absolute jewels in Northland New Zealand that should definitely be added to your must do list if you're exploring this area of New Zealand.

Nestled in the northern reaches of New Zealand, Northland is well known for its rich diversity especially when it comes to landscape photography. With a coastline dotted with dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and hidden coves, and some of New Zealand's most incredible podocarp forests (including the oldest and amazing Waipoua Kauri Forest), there is so much to choose from when adventuring through Northland.

Whangaroa Harbour Dukes Nose Track Northland

The Dukes Nose track is one of those locations that for a moment would have you believe you've been transported to some far off islands in Thailand or South East Asia. The incredible views above the Whangaroa Harbour and beyond makes this hike one that really shows just how beautiful this part of New Zealand is.

Facilities: Toilets available near the Lane Cove Hut (long drops)

Kauri Protection Cleaning Station: please make sure you use the Kauri Dieback cleaning station when you reach it at the start of the hike. This is to protect New Zealand's native Kauri tree from the Dieback disease which is threatening all Kauri in the country.

DUKES NOSE TRACK - THE HIKE AND THE PHOTOS

Sunset at The Dukes Nose track summit

I can't remember exactly where I first saw images from the Dukes Nose hike (Kairara Rock) but I remember thinking I've absolutely got to see this place for myself the next time I head to Northland.

It wasn't until 2021 that I finally made it to the trail head and I wish it hadn't taken me so long to tick this one off, it truly is an incredible sight and one for every landscape photographer.

There are two options available to when it comes to the Dukes Nose track and getting up to the summit.

WALK IN VIA THE WAIRAKAU STREAM TRACK

The walk in via the Wairakau Stream Track is the option we chose and it was absolutely worth the longer hike through New Zealand native forest and towering volcanic valley walls which you miss if you take the water taxi option. The complete return trip is 12.2km in total and will take you around 5-6 hours to complete.

The Wairakau Stream Track begins from the end of Campbell Road Totora North and starts off up an old 4wd track. Once you reach the top of the 4wd track incline (approximately 1.5km) you will see a sign post for the Wairakau Stream Track and start your walk through the beautiful coastal New Zealand forest, towering volcanic valley walls and along the stunning harbour's edge. We saw our first Ruru (NZ Native Owl) by taking this option! There are two small stream crossing which you will encounter along the way that might require you to take off your boots, depending on what the rainfall has been in the area prior. We completed the track in dry weather conditions and the crossings were no issue at all.

The Dukes Nose Kairara Rock Blog

Once you reach the Lane Cove Hut (approximately 3.5km), have a rest/drink/refuel, and then continue on up the 500m to the top of Kairara Rocks (approx 45 minutes).

The Dukes Nose Kairara Rock Track Blog

This part is not for the faint hearted and includes 2 x steep climb grab rails up vertical cliff face. It is very much worth it for the views, but if you have a fear of heights then I definitely suggest you take an encouraging buddy with you to help you get to the top.

All worth it for this view

Summit of The Dukes Nose Kairara Rock

WATER TAXI OPTION

To skip the first part of the hike, you can catch a water taxi from Whangaroa Harbour to Lane Cove Hut, then continue the rest of the track up to the Dukes Nose Kairara Rock path (45 minutes).

Be sure to book your water taxi well in advance, and if you're staying the night at Lane Cove Hut then book your return voyage also so you don't miss out.

THE DUKES NOSE SUNSET PHOTOS

Sunset from The Dukes Nose Whangaroa looking east

We decided to hike the Dukes Nose track in the afternoon so that we could be at the summit in time for golden hour and sunset. This did mean that we had to hike back out in the dark (we weren't staying overnight at the Lane Cove Hut) but we made sure to be down at the hut before it got dark so that we didn't have to do the steep rock face without any light.

Sunset from The Dukes Nose Whangaroa looking North

The Dukes Nose is a location that works well at both sunset and sunrise, and if we had been able to stay at the hut it would have been great to try these shots at sunrise also. Our decision to hike the Dukes Nose was a spur of the moment one while we were in the area so we hadn't booked anything in advance.

IS THE DUKES NOSE TRACK WORTH IT?

An absolute resounding yes! The view is one of the best in the North Island of New Zealand and if you're heading north and looking for an incredible photo location and don't mind a bit of effort getting to it, this is the one for you.

If you are interested in prints of any of the New Zealand Landscape Photography seen in this blog, please feel free to head on over to my New Zealand Photography Print Store and have a little look around.

Dukes Nose Trek

Experience a walk in the clouds with nature knights on dukes nose trek, a monsoon special experience... the trek starts after a nice pleasant drive along the rural countryside. once you reach the base village we may have a local snack bite in one of the small villages dhaba. dukes nose trek is short and crisp; trekkers begin with a short walk along the rugged countryside that climbs up gradually. the final 20 to 30 minutes stretch is a steep adventurous ascend. the experience is almost magical on a cloudy day during monsoon as you walk through the cloud to reach the summit where you are blessed with a panoramic 360 degree view of the entire region. you can spot over half a dozen forts from here rajmachi, dhak, korigad, lohgad, visapur, tikona, kathingad etc. you also have lord shiva shrine on the summit of dukes nose. locals also called dukes nose nagphani due to its natural shape like hood of snake. duke's nose is also one of the most challenging rappelling spots but this is only possible during non-monsoon seasons.  location:  dukes nose (near khandala/ lonavala).
