Staying in Lisbon and looking to discover the City of Light on foot? We think that’s a great idea! Of course, the only way to catch those stunning miradouros (viewpoints) is to skip the metro, miss your bus, and put on your walking shoes. But leave your high heels at home, please! Lisbon is for gym shoes, trainers, and shoes with a good grip to help you make your way up the steep hills and burn those calories while taking in all that Lisbon has to offer. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, Lisbon has a variety of walking routes that offer breathtaking views and a chance to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this captivating city. Here’s our guide to seven of the best walking trails in Lisbon!

The 10 best things to do in Lisbon

L isbon is a city steeped in history and traditions that are still at play today. Begin by exploring centuries-old attractions such as the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos or the Torre de Belém, before hopping on a wooden tram through the city's prettiest and most historic streets. You can also join a walking tour to seek out the stories behind the families that have been salting cod and preparing piri-piri chicken for generations, tasting as you go. But the city has a modern side too, with creative and colourful street art sprayed onto the sides of different buildings. Discover the best things to do during a visit here to get to the heart of what makes Lisbon so wonderful.

Below our experts share their top tips for making the most of your time in the city, while here you'll find our guides focusing on Lisbon's best  hotels ,  restaurants ,  bars  and  shopping , plus how to spend a  weekend in Lisbon .

Explore a centuries-old monastery

This imperious 15th-century Manueline monastery was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's 'discovery' of India. The main attraction of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is the delicate Gothic chapel that opens up on to a grand monastery, in which some of Portugal's greatest historical figures are entombed.

Insider’s tip:  If you are visiting over a weekend, choose a time when mass is being held, allowing you to access the church without a queue and see it in its full glory as a church rather than a museum.

Peer at the Atlantic from inside an impressive tower

The early 16th-century Torre de Belém stands out over the mouth of the Tejo, guarding the entrance to the city's harbour. It is a symbol of maritime Lisbon, and is reached via a walkway raised out over the water on timbers. Inside it is filled with intricate stonework and has wide Atlantic views.

Insider’s tip: Look for the rhinoceros sculpted on the base of a turret, which is considered to be the first sculpture of such an animal in Western European art. It probably depicts the rhinoceros that King Manuel 1 sent Pope Leo X in 1515.

Survey the city from the castle walls

The winding medieval streets of Lisbon's most ancient neighbourhood, Alfama, twist up to the city's Moorish pinnacle, Castelo de São Jorge. The dusk-orange walls of the ancient castle date back to the ninth century and lord over the city – they are visible from almost every street. The view from the top isn't bad either.

Insider’s tip: Don’t just visit the castle, but also dip into Lisbon’s imposing 12th-century cathedral nearby and then head for a coffee at Audrey's Café in hotel  Santiago de Alfama , from which you look onto the church where Christopher Columbus got married.

Get the inside scoop on Alfama

There are lots of free walking tours in Lisbon, many hosted by students who benefit from tips, but nothing comes close to Discover Walks, a company rolled out globally which has garnered high praise. There is a wide choice of options, but start with the free 90-minute tour of Alfama, Lisbon’s most fascinating district where history is writ large on every narrow street.

Insider’s tip: This tour has something for everyone: history, yes, but it also explores Lisbon’s music, fado, its flag, its patron saint and the famous azulejos (tiles) that characterise the city. Take a camera and flat shoes for the hills and cobblestones.

Bairro Alto

Hop aboard a tram to scoot up lisbon's steep hills.

The most charming way to tick off a few sights is by riding the wooden tram 28 as it rumbles through Lisbon's prettiest and most historic streets. Starting at the foot of Bairro Alto, the vintage carriage trundles through the shopping districts of Baixa and Chiado before lurching and labouring past the churches and castles on the cobbled hills of the Alfama and Graça neighbourhoods.

Insider’s tip: Avoid carrying any valuables aboard the tram if possible and safeguard your mobile, handbag and wallet as this ride is infamous among locals for being one which pickpockets target as it is mainly used by tourists.

Departs: From Praca Luis de Camões to Graça every 15 minutes

Avenidas Novas

Discover a remarkable private collection of art.

One of the 20th century's great philanthropists, Armenian Calouste Gulbenkian, left much of his art and historic artefacts to his favoured city, Lisbon. The museum set up in his honour, Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, now houses one of Europe's most epic collections. Look out for priceless Hellenic vases, ancient Chinese porcelain and paintings by Rembrandt, Monet and Van Dyck. There's also an affiliated modern art museum opposite.

Insider’s tip: Don’t miss the special room dedicated to French artist René Lalique, which holds a superb collection of his jewellery and glass. It's just one example of an impressive body of work on the decorative arts.

Cais do Sodré

Scope out the best street art.

Underdogs is a cultural platform based in the capital and founded by Lisbon’s best known street artist, Vhils. By prior arrangement, you can book a three-hour guided tour to visit a variety or urban art all over the city, such as Obey Giant by Vhils and Shephard Fairey. You can also visit the platform's gallery to view the current works on exhibition.

Insider’s tip: The tour ends at the Underdogs Art Store in Cais do Sodré, where you can buy limited editions of the work visited, as well a wide range of signed editions by Vhils and other artists and book by and about them.

Nearest metro: Cais do Sodré

Tickle your tastebuds with classic Lisbon dishes

Culinary Backstreets offers three very different tours (each celebrating a different neighbourhood), which take you into a hidden Lisbon where generations of families have been salting cod and preparing piri-piri chicken over charcoal pits. On the Song of the Sea tour, you'll wander into food markets and past docks in search of cod fritters and goose barnacles in the narrow streets of the working class district of Alcântara.

Insider’s tip: As much about the people and the place as the kitchen, these tours are for keen foodies with an appetite for everything, but make sure you try the little known Portuguese sheep cheeses, rich in both variety and flavour.

Contact: culinarybackstreets.com

This aristocratic hill town to the west of the city is studded with fairytale palaces, botanical gardens and wild woodlands. It is famous for its misty, cool microclimate, which is one of the main reasons royalty would retreat here from Lisbon during the hot summers. The train to Sintra departs from Rossio station every 20 minutes and takes about 40 minutes.

Insider’s tip: Allow a whole day to visit Sintra, which poet Lord Byron described as an 'Eden'. In between the gardens and historic palaces, treat yourself to a lunch at the elegant 18th-century Palacio de Seteais , now a luxury hotel.

Cascais, Estoril and beyond

These neighbouring beach towns are the best of the city's seaside suburbs. Destinations in themselves, they are connected by an Atlantic-front promenade. The region's best beaches (Adraga, Guincho and Grande) are found on the coastal road north, beyond Cascais. From Cais do Sodré station, the coastal train to Cascais and Estoril leaves every 20 minutes and takes about 40 minutes.

Insider’s tip: Stop for a drink at the charming old Hotel Palácio in Estoril. Built in the 1930s, the hotel maintains its air of grandeur and was the setting for Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Definitely take a day to do Hi Lisbon's free walking tours in Alfama and Baixa downtown. So much fun!

We had a limited visit to Lisbon and will return again. Had the pleasure of having Jose Manuel Sousa as a guide for a fantastic walking tour. What a delightful, informative and fun tour. We highly recommend him and the Hi Lisbon Walking Tours.

I had forgotten to pay an initial deposit to secure a reservation. To the company's credit, they us take a tour with Sara anyway, who happened to have been waiting for some other tourists who I believe didn't materialize. She was wonderful! We learned a great deal about the history of the city, the stories behind the most noteworthy statues and landmarks. It was a pleasurable walk through the neighborhoods. Sara let us have just enough time at each of the panoramic sites to take pictures before launching back into her excellent storytelling. She also took us to her favorite place for gininjas and paid for them herself (though we did compensate for this in our tip which she deserved) as well as her own favorite place for egg tarts, which was great.

There were only 4 of us on this walking tour, so was perfect for getting the most out of our guide - Chiara C. Starting in Commercial Square we walked through Biaxa's squares and parks before showly climbing up into Chiado and eventually to the top of the Elevator de Santa Justa. We learned all about the earthquake of 1755 and the rebuilding of the city in a new style. Moving on to Chiado and eventually into Barrio Alta we saw the city from some amazing viewpoints and got to see the parts of the city we sould have missed otherwise. Great experience and highly recommended.

Discover the secret viewpoint that houses the Rua Augusta Arch on our walking tour of Lisbon and be impressed by the architectural beauty of this Portuguese city.

Menores de 5 años

In this walking tour of Lisbon we will enjoy an interesting day strolling through the capital of Portugal, and we will walk the streets in search of the most emblematic places to understand the history and culture of our neighboring country.

In Rossio Square we will discover who Pedro IV was, and we will be surprised by the story of the fire in the church of Santo Domingo, declared a National Monument.

We will stop at the majestic Rossio Station , one of the most attractive buildings of this town, which could well look like a palace if we do not know Lisbon well.

The iron structure of the Santa Justa elevator , the only vertical elevator in Lisbon, offers fabulous panoramic views, which is why it has become one of Lisbon's main tourist attractions.

We will enter the traditional neighborhood of Chiado , famous for its bookstores, including Bertrand, the oldest in the world and the perfect place for literature lovers.

We will walk along Rua Garret , the main street of this area, which is full of charming stores that have survived over the years.

We will also see important religious works, such as the Convento do Carmo or the church of Our Lady of the Incarnation .

In the Commerce Square we will comment on the great earthquake of 1755 that left in ruins the old Royal Palace that stood in this space.

As a final touch, we will visit the majestic Arch of Rua Augusta , symbol of the recovery after the natural disaster. From its imposing viewpoint we will find one of the best views of the Tagus River to end this walking tour.

Celebrate Festa della Repubblica with Free Museum Access Across Rome

walking tours free lisbon

While the Festa della Repubblica is one of the major highlights on Sunday, June 2, the free museums will also have a massive attraction. This year’s public holiday will coincide with the famous Domenica al Museo, which allows the free opening of museums in Rome and across Italy to the general public. Therefore, Roman locals, visitors, and tourists alike have another golden opportunity to go to the Roman museums and enjoy the view at zero cost.

The Domenica al Museo comes every first Sunday of the month. This time, the first Sunday of June comes on the same day as the holiday, when Romans are celebrating the day when their country became a republic through a referendum.

The famous museums in Rome’s neighborhoods will open from nine o’clock in the morning until six o’clock in the evening. If you are in Pompeii or near the Colosseum and Etruscan Museum at Villa Giulia, make sure you enjoy these sites for free.

All museums that are run by the city and archaeological sites will be open to the public for free except Gallerie Borghese and Pantheon, which will require early booking.

If you love Roman museums, head to the Ara Pacis, the Capitoline Museums, and sites such as Circus Maximus for a free treat.

Palm Beach walking tour leader Rick Rose wins prestigious county tourism award

walking tours free lisbon

A Palm Beach institution known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the town's history has been honored for his contribution to local tourism.

Rick Rose , the bowtie-wearing leader of the Worth Avenue walking tours since 2011, on Thursday received the prestigious Providencia Award from Discover The Palm Beaches, the county's tourism marketing agency.

"Receiving the Providencia Award for me, personally, is the highest possible recognition of my life's work," Rose said Friday.

The announcement was made during Discover The Palm Beaches' Travel Rally Day celebration Thursday at Manatee Lagoon in West Palm Beach, where Discover also announced that Palm Beach County charted a record-breaking number of visitors for the first quarter of this year, with 2.8 million visitors. In addition to Rose's award, Discover presented its Partner of the Year Awards to The Ben Hotel and Visit Palm Beach.

Rose was born and raised in Palm Beach County, as was his mother, he said. And though he left the area for about 25 years, "This was always home for me."

Rose has dedicated his entire career to travel and tourism after receiving his degree in hospitality from Florida State University. "It honestly kind of puts a crown on my achievements," he said. "I couldn't think of another recognition anywhere that would be more heartwarming."

This is the 32nd year the award has been given to a local business, organization or person in recognition of their contributions to Palm Beach County's tourism industry.

In addition to the Worth Avenue walking tours, Rose wrote "Palm Beach: The Essential Guide to America's Legendary Resort Town," and he co-owns and operates Palm Beach Vacation Rentals, which has 40 short-term rental properties in Palm Beach County.

Rose was chosen from a pool of applicants by a committee of local tourism industry leaders as one of three finalists, with the historian going head-to-head with PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens and developer Related Southeast and its CityPlace and Hilton projects in downtown West Palm Beach.

The winner was chosen by a popular vote, with votes cast online via the Providencia Award website. Rose said he was grateful to be considered alongside such prestigious organizations as Related Southeast and PGA National Resort. "They would have been very deserving," he said.

Rose is an esteemed member of Palm Beach County's tourism community, said Milton Segarra, president and chief executive of Discover The Palm Beaches.

"As a dedicated resident, historian, and author who has documented the rich history of 'America’s First Resort Destination,' he brings The Palm Beaches to life for visitors and other residents," Segarra said. "His thorough knowledge, distinct Palm Beach style, and overall contributions to our organization and to the larger community are invaluable, and we are proud to honor him as a strong tourism ambassador with the Providencia Award."

Winning the Providencia Award is a full-circle moment for Rose: His mentor and Worth Avenue walking tours predecessor James Ponce was the last individual to receive the award 10 years ago. Since Ponce's recognition, only organizations or groups have received the Providencia.

"We've got an unbelievable destination here," Rose said. "Really for me it's not just Palm Beach island, it's the whole county."

This was the second year in a row that the Providencia Award honored a person or organization based in Palm Beach. Last year's award went to The Colony Hotel.

The first winner of the Providencia was actor Burt Reynolds , who was raised in Palm Beach County and returned to the area in the 1970s, when he settled at a sprawling ranch in Jupiter Farms. Throughout his career, Reynolds brought film and television productions to the Palm Beaches.

The award was named after a Spanish ship that sank off the coast of Palm Beach in the 1880s. The vessel's cargo included tens of thousands of Trinidad coconuts, which the crew managed to bring on shore and plant — later inspiring the name, "Palm Beach."

Will travis kelce attend taylor swift's eras tour dates in lisbon, portugal, share this article.

walking tours free lisbon

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift continue to spend so much time together despite their busy schedules.

They were in Singapore together during one of her Eras Tour stops, they went on vacation together in the Bahamas, they were snapped at various places together and they attended Patrick Mahomes’ charity event . Then, Kelce showed up to her 87th Eras Tour show in Paris and they had a vacation together in Italy.

Now, Swift continues her international leg of the Eras Tour, so you might wonder: given that Travis has some time off, will he be in Lisbon for two days to see her perform again?

We don’t know officially. But there are reports that he’ll continue to join her on certain stops in Europe, so maybe he’s traveling with her? We’ll see!

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

The Best Walking Tours in Bologna

A quiet street in sunny Bologna, Italy while taking a walking tour

Located in Northern Italy, Bologna is considered one of the food capitals of Italy . And given Italy’s culinary reputation, that must be saying something.

Food is what draws most visitors here ( it’s what drew me there ). I had heard it’s the place for foodies in Italy and I was not disappointed.

Unsurprisingly, there are lots of amazing food tours here that allow you to eat your way around town while learning about the region’s traditional cuisine. There are also wine tours galore plus plenty of history-oriented tours to ensure you learn about this food-centric city’s past.

In short, Bologna is the perfect place to take a walking tour. And, since I love walking tours of all kind, I took a bunch while I was in town. Some were great, some were ok, some where terrible . Here’s the best walking tours I took in Bologna to help you plan your visit:

Best Overall Tour

The Take Walks walking tour company logo

Take Walks is my go-to tour company in Italy, offering access to places that no other gets and featuring incredibly knowledgeable guides. I always have fun and learn a lot on these tours. I can’t recommend them enough.

Their Tastes & Traditions tour lasts 3.5 hours and includes nine mouth-watering offerings (plus coffee and wine). You’ll get to visit markets, sample artisan fare, and learn all about traditional cuisine. If you only do one tour here, make it this one.

Best Free Tour

Free Walking Tour Bologna

Offered daily, this is the best (and most popular) free tour in town and a good introduction to Bologna. It lasts two hours and covers all the highlights, including Piazza Nettuno, the Jewish Ghetto, Piazza Maggiore, and more. It’s informative without being boring and perfect primer for first-time visitors. Just remember to tip your guide at the end!

While those are my favorite paid and free tour operators in town, Bologna as a lot more to offer walking tour companies. Here are three other companies I like a lot:

1. Do Eat Better

If you’ve still got an appetite, join Do Eat Better’s Traditional Food Tour . Led by an expert local guide, this 3.5-hour tour makes stops at four hand-picked eateries, where you can try fresh pasta, artisanal ice cream, locally sourced meats, and more (you’ll definitely leave full). I especially like that you not only get to try some amazing traditional food but get off the tourist trail and beat the crowds. It’s a must-do tour for foodies.

Tours start at 90 EUR.

Book here!

2. Bologna Wine

If you’re like me and love vino, you’re going to want to book this guided wine tour . It’s led by a sommelier and features a wide variety of wines from around Bologna. You’ll visit lesser-known spots, try some unique vintages, and develop a deeper appreciation for the region’s wines. You’ll also get to stop at the city’s oldest tavern, which I think is really neat. Tours last 2-3 hours (depending on which you book) and include 2-5 glasses of wine (again, depending on the tour). The guides really know their stuff, so you’ll learn a ton on this tour.

Tours start at 69 EUR.

3. Travelhoo

To burn off all the amazing food you’ve been enjoying, take a guided bike tour with Travelhoo. Over the course of 2.5 hours, you’ll learn about Bologna’s long history and visit its main sights, such as Piazza Maggiore, the Basilica of San Petronio, and the Neptune Fountain. It’s a solid introduction to the city and how it came to be the food and wine hub that it is today.

While this is an active tour, the guide leads you at a leisurely pace, so you don’t need to be super fit to enjoy it.

Tours start at 75 EUR.

Bologna may not get the attention that Rome or Venice do, but when it comes to food, it holds its own. Take one of the walking tours above and learn about its history and culture and feast on the amazing eats that have put the city on the map for centuries!

And while these are my favourite tours in the city, the website GetYourGuide has lots more options so check them out if you’re looking for additional tours!
