Caribbean Tours & Vacations
Whether it’s rum and cigars, sun and surf or dining and dancing, nowhere does good vibes quite like the Caribbean.
A mojito or a pina colada? Reggae beats or salsa rhythms? Trekking across volcanoes or relaxing with sand between your toes? These are the only questions you need to answer while kicking back on the brilliant beaches of the Caribbean. Spend days taking in the tropical sun from white sand beaches or wading under the clear blue water while snorkeling for marine life. Fill the nights with food and music, eat fresh fish and jerked chicken, listen to Bob Marley and dance the cha-cha (though maybe not all at once).

What countries are in the Caribbean?
The countries that are in the Caribbean are:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Dominican Republic
- Saint Kitts and Nevis
- Saint Lucia
- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
- Trinidad and Tobago
What is the weather like in the Caribbean?
The Caribbean is mostly known for its warm, tropical climate. It does, however, have an alternate rainy season that brings tropical showers from around May to November every year. This time of year is known as the wet or summer season because temperatures will get to their yearly peak around July/August and the rainfall will get to its highest monthly average.
There is intense humidity from May to October for most of the region, with tropical storms and hurricanes typically occurring from June to November.
As the Caribbean is an island region, expect moderate to intense windy conditions all year.
Aside from the wet season, the temperatures remain pretty constant throughout the year. Daily highs are likely to sit between 82-90ºF and lows can range from 72-79ºF.
The dry season is from December to April however, the seasons can differ depending on the region in the Caribbean.
When is the best time to visit the Caribbean?
The best time to visit the Caribbean is from December to May for the dry season.
The busiest time of year falls during the months of February and April as the northern hemisphere's winter temperatures and school holidays coincide, bringing in many sun-chasing visitors.
If you're looking for a quieter time, avoid the major holidays and look to go around April before the dry season ends but tourist numbers have lessened.
With tropical storms and the hurricane season starting from May and running to November, it can be riskier traveling to the Caribbean during the wet season. However, because the weather deters many travelers, it means fewer people around.
Storms and hurricanes are most likely to occur from June to November while the rest of the wet season can have sudden, intense downpours and rained-out days. But not all places will get as much wet weather as others, so it's worth doing a bit of research before you plan.
Do I need a visa to travel to the Caribbean?
Whether you need a visa for the Caribbean will depend on your passport, the length of your stay and the countries you are visiting. For many travelers, including those with a UK, US, Canadian or Australian passport, you may need to pay an entry tax or a visa waiver fee or purchase a tourist card for countries such as Cuba, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic. Many countries in the Caribbean may allow foreign travelers to enter as long as they are only staying for a certain amount of time. This can change depending on the country visited and your nationality. Certain countries may also have a fee to extend your stay. Countries that may not require a visa for entry may still require each traveler to have a return or onward ticket.
If you are visiting the Caribbean, make sure you have thoroughly checked the entry and exit requirements specific to your nationality and make sure you do this for each destination you are traveling to or transiting through.
See visa travel advice for travelers from Australia , the United States , the United Kingdom , Canada and New Zealand .
The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in the Caribbean?
Tipping in the Caribbean is typically done at the discretion of the individual. If no gratuity has been added to the check, it's customary to add about 10-15% minimum.
Generally, tips are given to bellhops, housekeeping and room service. You may also tip bartenders, spa workers, barbershops, taxi drivers and waiters, it's up to you.
What is the internet access like in the Caribbean?
Internet access in the Caribbean is usually accessible, especially in the tourist areas.
Restaurants and venues may even have their own wi-fi for guests to use; sometimes, this may be for a small fee.
Can I use my cell phone while in the Caribbean?
You can use a cell device in the Caribbean. However, some areas, mainly rural and remote island areas, may not have coverage.
Several destinations also have local phones you can rent during your stay, while in other areas, the roaming function on your own device will work to keep you connected. However, ensure you've turned on global roaming before leaving your home destination. If you intend to activate global roaming while in the Caribbean, be sure to check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur when using this option, as sometimes this can be expensive.
What are the toilets like in the Caribbean?
Toilets in the Caribbean are typically western porcelain flush toilets. Some locations, specifically remote away from major hubs, may use a toilet hose or even a pit latrine if there is no indoor plumbing. You may need to pay to use toilets while traveling in the Caribbean and sometimes toilet paper isn't supplied - so it's a good idea to carry small change and toilet paper while out.
Also, keep an eye on whether you can flush toilet paper, as in some countries, you may not be able to.
Can I drink the water in the Caribbean?
Some countries in the Caribbean do have safe tap water, however, it may be chlorinated and cause stomach upsets.
Countries where tap water is not safe to drink include:
- the Dominican Republic
Tap water safety can also vary within countries depending on if you are outside the tourist regions. For this reason, it's not advisable to drink water from the tap in the Caribbean.
For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable bottle or canteen with filtered water if you can – your group leader will provide larger and less disposable water containers for refills on private transport days when they have the resources available.
It's also best to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.
Are credit cards widely accepted in the Caribbean?
Major credit cards are widely accepted in the major tourist hubs in the Caribbean. Most countries will also have sufficient ATM access in these popular areas, however, they can sometimes be unreliable.
It's advised to carry cash when visiting more remote islands and destinations just in case card payments are not accepted.
What public holidays are celebrated in the Caribbean?
With so many countries and territories in the Caribbean, public holidays can vary from island to island. Many of these countries include Christian holidays in their calendars, as well as some more regional celebrations like Carnival.

Is the Caribbean safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?
Homosexuality is illegal in several Caribbean countries with imprisonment used as punishment for some homosexual acts. These countries include Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. In these countries, a high amount of discretion is recommended for LGBTQIA+ travelers.
While the other countries in the Caribbean have made homosexuality legal, the general attitudes towards the LGBTQIA+ community in this region are still conservative. It is recommended not to show public affection while traveling in this region as public affection can be uncommon, even among opposite-gender couples. Stigma still remains in some parts of the culture of this region, especially in rural areas. It is strongly advised that LGBTQIA+ travelers be discreet and mindful of local attitudes so as to avoid negative attention.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Why should you book a vacation package to the Caribbean?
When should you book a vacation package to the caribbean.
The Caribbean experiences hot weather throughout the year with the highest rainfall being in May. The average temperature is about 81 degrees Fahrenheit and the months between January and April are the best for holidaying.
In these months after the conclusion of the most hectic season, vacation packages are cheaper. At year's end various carnivals take place on islands such as Curaçao and Aruba.
Where should you stay in the Caribbean during your vacation?
For any vacation type in the caribbean:.
If you prefer to explore the island of Aruba, then either an all-inclusive or a beachfront hotel is a good pick. The Marriot Resort is a beachfront hotel with a surf club, a spacious dining area, swimming pools, and a casino.
If you opt for the British Virgin Islands, then the beachfront Anegada Beach Club is a viable option. It houses a bar and restaurant within walking distance of a spectacular coral reef ideal for snorkeling. Both hotels offer an inclusive pick-up from the airport.

The Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort in Aruba is a 4-star, Dutch-themed hotel, be-fitting a family holiday. The rooms boast a kitchenette. Kids under 12 can share a single room with their parents at no extra cost.

For romantic vacations in the Caribbean:
The Royal Palms hotel is a 19th-Century colonial manor designed in an 18th-century British architectural style. It has a wine cellar, beautiful gardens with sun loungers, and an outdoor swimming pool. The daily wine reception is a great way to spend a romantic evening.
The Flora Suite Hotel Curaçao is an adult only, all-suite establishment. It features a spa, two restaurants, and two bars, including a poolside bar. The Parasasa beach is a 6-minutes walk while the Blue Bay Curaçao Golf Resort is just over 4 miles away. Packing for a cruise or simple land relax in the Caribbean is relatively easy. The only condition that could determine your Caribbean outfits is the type of activities you want to enjoy.
If you aim to benefit the sun and lie on the beach every day, you should definitely pack a bunch of different swimsuits and cover-ups.
But many Caribbean islands have much more to offer than blue water and white sand. In most places, you will be able to enjoy adventurous nature activities such as hiking trails or even climbing. In this case, you should definitely bring comfortable wear, shoes, and a light blouse to keep you warm in the highest mountains.
The other thing that you should think of is weather conditions . The temperature in the Caribbean has minimal variations throughout the year with a minimum of 20 Celcius degrees.
But you should definitely consider the rainy season in your travel plans. The wet season usually starts in June and ends up in late October. If you will be traveling in those months, consider bringing a light raincoat or small umbrella. This will for sure rescue your clothes from an unexpected short downpour.
Choosing a travel bag for the Caribbean
Unless you’re not gonna spend your Caribbean vacation in a luxury all-inclusive hotel, I recommend you to bring a backpack instead of a huge suitcase.
In fact, traveling to the Caribbean is totally doable with hand luggage only. And this is something that I did while going to Guadeloupe and Martinique. You can check out how to pack all your necessary stuff in carry-on luggage only by clicking here.
Best backpacks for the Caribbean
Me and Mariusz, while traveling to this sunny paradise, brought only two carry-on backpacks and we were super comfortable with it.
Below you can see both of them plus some other backpacks that we didn’t try but which are often recommended by other travel bloggers.
CabinZero Vintage
I personally recommend this backpack for any kind of city break. It was designed as a dedicated airplane cabin backpack . Its main feature is flexibility. The volume is 44l which provides you a lot of space to pack with your travel items and clothing. Moreover, every CabinZero bag comes with an OKOBAN tracking system which increases the safety of your luggage.
Doughnut American Vintage Cordura
This backpack is a bit less spacious since it has only 26l. But even so, it was sufficient for our needs. Moreover, it was perfect as a day bag which we were carrying for every day trip in the Caribbean.
Those two bags were our personal choice for our Caribbean travel . They have many features which you can check out in a separate review post.
Osprey Farpoint
Osprey backpacks are often recommended among the travel bloggers community . This model opens like a suitcase which makes it comfortable to pack and search for the required item.
Osprey Meridian
Another selected backpack from Osprey family. This model is a bit larger than the rest but it’s highly convertible . It’s equipped with wheels which makes it easier to carry on in good circumstances. Plus it has a detachable day backpack, so you get two bags in one price.
Useful packing gear
Besides the main travel bag, there are also other helpful items that will make your packing much easier.
One of them is packing cubes which help you to keep the order in your backpack or suitcase.
The other thing that I cannot imagine travel without is a light cotton sack bag . I totally love using mine while traveling. It’s very light and easy to fold and place in the main luggage. But it’s also irreplaceable if it comes to daily trips and such prosaic activities as doing some grocery shopping. Or any shopping at all. But be sure to buy high-quality strong cotton so it will last for years!
The Caribbean Packing List
Essential items to bring.
Here’s a short list of the most important items you need to bring with you for the perfect Caribbean vacation . As a quick reminder!
- Wallet with some local cash
- National ID card
- Passport and visas
- Flight/ferry tickets
- EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card of European citizen) for islands belonging to EU overseas territories
- Travel insurance
- Travel guide book – I recommend checking out Lonely Planet website for some great guide deals!
Caribbean packing list for women
The obvious answer for the question of what to pack for the Caribbean travel? is swimsuits! But there is more than that of course.
Nevertheless, for Caribbean travel, you should pack as few as you can. In fact, you will only need summer clothes there. Unless you travel in winter from a colder country. But then the only warm clothes you will use will be at the airport.
So let’s go through a list of the ultimate women’s Caribbean wear packing list !
Tops and T-shirts
The very basic part of your travel closet. Be sure to bring with you a few of close tops and loose shirts. The best material here will be cotton to give you some breezy feeling.
Long sleeve shirt
I like to have one shirt with long sleeves with me in case of spending too much time on the sun. Sleeves will help your skin take a rest from burning sun rays. And if the shirt will be made of natural material, like cotton or linen, you will still feel pretty cool.
Long dress or skirt
This kind of wardrobe will be convenient for any more elegant outgoing. But it will also be more appropriate if you would like to visit any sacred place or temple where beach dresses will not be that much adequate.
Light trousers
Similar to a long sleeve shirt, I like to have one pair of light trousers in case I would like to get relief from the sun. Personally, I love wearing linen trousers since this material is strong, grateful, and natural. I think it’s much more comfortable to wear than leggins made of unnatural polyester.
Obvious again! Shorts will be perfect for any kind of physical activity such as taking cliff or jungle trails. Preferably if they would be made of cotton, linen, or jeans.
Here you can go really crazy. There are tons of different summer dress models out there, so you will know the best what suits your figure. I can only recommend the material: choose the natural one, like cotton or linen, since you will be feeling the most comfortable by wearing them. Also, you will not harm the planet with some more plastic textiles!
Just in case of climbing in the mountains. In general, the temperature there is still quite high, but on the open spaces, the wind might make you feel a little bit cold. Plus, if you will overdo with air-conditioner in your hotel room, a sweatshirt will rescue you.
Bathing suits
Total must-have in the Caribbean. I propose you to take 2-3 different sets since you will be wearing them a lot!
Perfect for wearing on the beach. Entering the beach bar, or a souvenir shop with a lovely swim suit’s cover-up will ensure you to keep the beach-tourism etiquette. Plus, you will probably look gorgeous.
Here the thing is easy. Choose only natural materials, since polyester underwear might harm your health and mood. Organic cotton will be the best.
Even if you will spend barefoot most of the time, I propose to take a few pair of socks with you. I recommend flat socks for everyday shoes.
The basic shoe type that you need on your Caribbean packing list. I recommend purchasing high-quality leather sandals so they will last with you as long as it’s possible.
Personally, I am not a fan, but if you like to wear flip flops, that’s ok! Just remember, that flip flops are the common ocean pollution element. So don’t consider them as a cheap piece of plastic that it will not be a waste to lose them on the beach. Instead, better buy high-quality pair made of leather. Not only it will be more natural, but also you will take care of them much better and focus not to lose them. This way they will serve for a very long time.
Sailing shoes
I totally love hig- quality sailing shoes! My favorite pair is traditional and classy Sperry Top-Sider. They’re perfect for everyday wear, for the beach, and even for the hiking trails! I even achieved the highest peak of the Lesser Antilles with those shoes! They are hard to damage, and they’re great for water + fast-drying. Great work also does the non-slippery sole. Totally recommended!
A hat will be useful both on the beach and on the hiking trail where there will be no shadow to hide in. It will successfully secure you from sunstroke.
Another obvious must-have on the list. Choose the model that will protect your eyes from UV rays. Also, pay attention to its shape so the rays will not reach your eyes from the sides (totally flat glasses are not the best choice).
Caribbean packing list for men
I must be honest that I don’t like most of the men packing lists found there on the Internet. Most of them include mostly sport-look clothes which are maybe comfortable, but not that natural and classy.
Luckily, Mariusz follows the classy men’s fashion trends, so thanks to him we can suggest you a bit more stylish travel look.
So gentlemen, let’s take a look on your Caribbean packing list for men!
The very basic item in men’s travel wardrobe. Let your tops and T-shirts be comfortable and made from natural materials like cotton. This will ensure your nice feeling.
In fact, casual shirts are a great choice for the Caribbean vacation! Our favorite material is linen which is just perfect for shirts. Long sleeves will also help your skin take a break from sun exposure, so they’re great for daily trips.
Definitely take a pair or two. Perfectly cotton, linen, or jeans. They’re ideal for hanging around in the cities, but also for awesome jungle hiking trails.
It’s great to have with you also a pair of long trousers. Think about classic linen trousers. They will not only look handsome but also will give you some airy feeling.
Light blazer
If you plan any evening going outs, you should consider bringing a stylish linen vest with you. They are much underrated in my opinion, and look so fine! Linen is perfect as a material for summer blazers.
Swim shorts
Definitely a must-have. Some of them can serve you as everyday shorts as well. So consider taking even 2-3 pairs with you as your Caribbean attire.
Definitely light and airy. Organic cotton will do a great job, as always. Better avoid synthetic materials such as polyester. It’s much better for your health and for the planet.
You should bring with you at least a few pairs of socks, even if you can assume not using them every day. Flat socks will be perfect for covered shoes.
Your first association might be sports sandals, but actually, I have got something else in my mind. When you’ll look for good enough, you will for sure find elegant leather sandals which will be perfect for everyday trips. Plus, if the job will be high-quality, they will last with you for years.
Flip-flops are convenient to wear in the pool or on the beach. But even they can be classy. Since plastic flip-flops are common ocean pollution cause they easily get lost, I recommend you choose more natural materials. Leather flip-flops are comfortable and help your feet get relaxed after the whole day of sightseeing.
We both, me and Mariusz, think that sailing shoes are the best option for any travel. Traditional leather models, like our beloved Sperry Top-Siders, are so comfortable that we can easily spend the whole day walking in them with absolutely no corn. Also, they look so much better than any sports shoes, so it’s a great alternative for touristic shoes.
You should definitely consider wearing a hat on your Caribbean hiking trips. The head covering helps you avoid sunstroke. You can bring a standard baseball cap, but Panama hat will definitely give you more style. Plus it will look so awesome with the Caribbean background!
Definitely a must-have in any sunny island. Make sure that the sunglasses protect your eyes against UV rays. Also, pay attention to their shape – the glass should not be totally flat, cause it makes it easier for sun rays to reach your eyes from the sides.
On most of the Caribbean islands, you will have no problem with buying any toiletries you’ll need. The content of a toiletry bag is a personal choice but I encourage you to pack it in a sustainable way.
So better bring with you some of your favorite natural and plastic-free items than buy their synthetic substitutes on place:
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
If you would like to read more about how to collect plastic-free toiletries for your next travel, click here to check my previous post [including FREE printable packing list for toiletries!] .
If you prefer to use fluid soaps instead of bars, I recommend you to equip with small refillable bottles dedicated to travel . You can fill them with your favorite lotions at home and then use while traveling.
In the Caribbean, you need to remember about the proper secure against mosquitos. Sometimes they are really annoying and nothing works. But usually, you can do pretty well with some natural citrus remedies .
If it comes to toiletry bag, personally I use… my old bag which still remembers times of my primary school. Pretty long-living. But if I would choose one again, I would purchase a leather bag with a little hook so you can hang it if needed.
Electronics
I would love to say that you can leave all the electronic stuff behind while going to your dream Caribbean vacation. But usually, it’s not the option nowadays.
So here’s a handy list of all the electronic stuff that you can bring with you.
Phone + Charger
The obvious one. Luckily, for most of us, smartphones also play the role of the camera. I still use my Samsung Galaxy S7 for this purpose, until I find a perfect camera for myself. After a few cracks here and there (falling on the windy street of Tarifa in Spain or winding stairs of Bran Castle in Romania) it still works perfectly (since 2016).
Extremely useful gear for selfies! You can purchase a tripod that will work both with phone and camera. The best option is to choose a tripod with remote controller which allows you to take great photos of yourself on your own during your great Caribbean vacations.
Camera + Equipment
If you love to take photos you probably already have proper camera gear. In this case, it’s good to remember to bring with you some extra SD cards to be sure to have enough place for all your great pics. Alternatively, you can bring an external drive if you have your computer with you.
Laptop + Charger
This electronic gear you will probably bring only for longer stays. Since I usually work in travel (aka write blog posts) I always pack my ASUS VivoBook S14 to my travel bag. It was with me in the Caribbean and was doing pretty well. What I love the most about it is the ultra-small weight (only 1.3 kg).
The charging device is especially useful when you plan whole day trips and rely on electronic maps and takes thousands of photos. A power bank can save your day though.
Universal Adapter
This small device is a perfect thing for people traveling to different countries. In the Caribbean, islands vary if it comes to electricity plugs. So universal adapter might become one of your best friends during a trip.

What to pack for the Caribbean: other gear
Hooray, we have packed all the essentials! Now we can expand this list with some extras which will make your holiday even more joyful.
Snorkel or dive gear
The Caribbean region is perfect for snorkeling and diving. If you want to admire the underwater world, you should bring at least swimming goggles.
Waterproof phone case
Trust me, it’s worth purchasing one. My waterproof case saved my phone not only once. The Caribbean means beaches, watersports, but also unexpected rains. Phone protection is definitely a must. And once you’ll buy it, keep your phone inside [because otherwise, you might drown your phone as we did – learn from our experiences!].
Water bottle
In some Caribbean islands drinking tap water is totally safe. So water bottle can not only rescue your wallet from unnecessary expenses but also save lots of plastic. For islands where water is not that safe, you can bring Lifestraw bottle which purifies the water from bacterias.
Reusable cutlery
Absolute must-have if you want to enjoy street food and reduce waste at the same time. You can purchase hard-plastic of bamboo cutlery and bring it with you for trips.
Foldable lunchbox
Great picnic item. Lunchboxes are perfect if you plan long trips. You can pack your sandwiches or other tasty snacks with you. And I love using foldable boxes made of silicone cause after emptying, they don’t take that much place in your bag.
Grocery bags
Useful if you plan some local shopping. In addition to my main sack bag, I always have at least one light cotton bag with me. I also love those old-school string shopping bags. Exotic fruits look so tasty in it!
In the Caribbean region, there are currently three different currencies in use. There is American dollar in the Virgin Islands, Euro in islands being European overseas territories, and Caribbean dollar on independent islands.
You should better have some local cash if you travel to independent countries cause you might have some problems with using a credit card there. On the other islands, in bigger shops or hotels, you can usually pay with card and use ATMs, but it’s good to have some cash with you as well for smaller expenses.
The costs of your trip may vary depending on different Caribbean islands. I was traveling for two months in Guadeloupe and Martinique and I wrote down every single penny that I spend on this trip. I prepared an informative financial report from this journey which I would like to share with you . You can download it by clicking below!

Transportation
Getting to the Caribbean is in fact relatively easy. When I booked my flights to Guadeloupe and Martinique I had used the Skyscanner flight search engine to get the best deal.
On place, you will usually have some different options for transportation. The easiest one is to rent a car because it will give you the biggest flexibility. But you can also use public transport like buses or ferries which will ensure you with some great adventures.
Read more: How to get around with public transport in the French Antilles?
Accommodation
In the Caribbean, you will find plenty of options for your stay. You can choose from all-inclusive hotels, private tourists villas, or even lovely bungalows on the beach.
My number #1 if it comes to finding accommodation is Booking.com . There you can find a perfect place in minutes. Plus, sometimes get a really nice deal.
My number #2, another favorite, is Airbnb . It works pretty well on some Caribbean islands. It lets you rent a cozy local apartment in some great places. I used this platform personally to find my own accommodation in the Caribbean.
And for your first stay with Airbnb, I have a special coupon code for you! By clicking below you will receive 23€ of discount for your first accommodation!

The best swimming with pigs tours in the bahamas.
Discover how to responsibly swim with pigs in the Bahamas.
Swimming With Pigs in the Bahamas
Getty Images
Reels of people frolicking with pigs on a beach in the Caribbean have more than likely surfaced on your TikTok and Instagram feeds at one point or another. After all, millions of people partake in this quintessential Bahamas experience each year, and the attraction is so popular that it's been replicated in other destinations.
If swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is on your bucket list, read on to discover the best tour options as well as what to consider when you visit.
Which Bahamas island has swimming pigs?
Located in the Exumas, Big Major Cay – commonly known as Pig Beach – is the original Bahamas island with swimming pigs. It is accessible from several islands in the Bahamas as well as Florida. Most swimming pig tours include other tourist attractions and experiences, including snorkeling in Thunderball Grotto (a filming location for two James Bond movies) and swimming with nurse sharks at Compass Cay.
How to get to Pig Beach from the Exumas
Staniel Cay: Staniel Cay is the closest inhabited island to Big Major Cay. Guests of Staniel Cay Yacht Club can take a short boat ride to Pig Beach via a local charter. 3N's Vacation Services and Staniel Cay Adventures are both reputable companies that offer such options.
Great Exuma: The largest island in the Exumas, Great Exuma houses some of the best resorts in the Bahamas , including the family-friendly Grand Isle Resort & Residences and the adults-only Sandals Emerald Bay . To get to Pig Beach from Great Exuma, it's best to book directly with your hotel. You'll have the option to take a full-day tour (with a roughly two-hour boat ride to the attractions from Great Exuma) or fly to Staniel Cay and take a short boat ride to Big Major Cay from there.
How to get to Pig Beach from Nassau
Pig Beach is reachable from Nassau via plane and/or boat. Below are some of the top-rated swimming pig tours from the Bahamas' capital city:
3N's Vacation Services: Swimming Pigs Flight & Tour
Price: From $675 per person Duration: 3.5 to 4 hours
This full-day, all-inclusive tour transports passengers from Nassau to Staniel Cay by plane, where you'll continue your excursion via boat. The tour includes several stops and activities:
- Swimming with pigs and feeding them tour-provided food at Pig Beach
- Swimming with nurse sharks at Compass Cay
- Snorkeling at Thunderball Grotto
- Visiting the iguanas of Guana Cay
- Strolling along a stunning sandbar
- A stop near Pablo Escobar's mysterious sunken plane on Norman's Cay
Snacks, lunch, soft drinks, beer and water are covered in tour rates; snorkel gear and towels are provided. Children ages 2 and younger are free, though this tour is not recommended for young kids. While tour groups are limited to 12 guests at maximum, private tours are available for a more intimate experience. Recent reviewers say they enjoyed this tour, though some expressed mixed feelings about the captains.
Check prices & availability on:

- Compass Cay, for swimming with the nurse sharks
- Great Exuma, for a Bahamian-style lunch buffet (included in tour rate)
- Norman's Cay, for snorkeling

Recent travelers highly recommend this tour, praising the guides, the lunch and the overall experience. Per the tour provider, this tour isn't recommended for children younger than 2, pregnant women, or those suffering from chronic back and/or neck pain.

How to get to Pig Beach from Florida
There are a few reputable companies that offer Pig Beach tours from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Below is a well-rated option:
Bahamas Air Tours: Miami to Bahamas Day Trip
Price: From $949 per person Duration: 12 hours
This full-day tour starts with private transportation from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. It also includes in-destination transportation to Pig Beach, Guana Cay, Thunderball Grotto, Compass Cay and the sandbars at Staniel Cay. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages are included in the price as well. Recent travelers rave about this experience, with some noting it's the best tour they've ever taken.
Note that passports are required for this day trip, and that while children are permitted on the tour, it's not ideal for young kids. This excursion is also ill-suited for pregnant women, and the tour operator requires a doctor's clearance for expectant mothers. Tours are limited to nine guests (but require a minimum of five participants); private charters are also available.
Is Pig Beach ethical?
Even though the Bahamas limits the number of tour operators allowed to visit Pig Beach per day, there's some controversy surrounding the island and whether or not it's ethical to visit.
In 2017, several pigs were found dead after an influx of tourists left snacks on the beach, causing the pigs to ingest too much sand. Also, travelers can be aggressive with the pigs, often chasing them, picking them up or even trying to ride them.
In recent years, a number of safety measures have been put in place to protect both the pigs and tourists. Per the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, they include the following:
- A trough provides a designated feeding place for the pigs.
- Signage communicates rules to tourists, including what you can and cannot feed to the pigs. The pigs are restricted to a diet of fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, grapes, watermelon, apples and lettuce, and many guides supply these items for tourgoers. Some tour guides will provide bread as well, though processed food is not ideal for these animals.
- A local taskforce of caretakers is on the ground daily to ensure visitors and tour operators are engaging with the pigs responsibly.
While the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism maintains that the attraction is sustainable, know that there aren't any legal limitations protecting the pigs at this time.
How to be a responsible traveler at Pig Beach
All tour guides are expected to share the following protocols with travelers; whether they do or not, it is important to respect these rules for both the safety of the pigs and you:
- Remain calm at all times.
- Do not chase, pick up or ride the pigs.
- Do not engage with the pigs without supervision.
- Only use approved food from your tour operator, and do not feed the pigs alcohol.
- If you do not have feed, hold your hands up to show the pigs you do not have anything.
What to pack for your excursion
Pack a beach bag , dry bag or backpack with the following items:
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Beach towel
- Camera and/or phone
- Waterproof phone pouch with lanyard
- Change of clothing
- Windbreaker or light jacket (in case of rain and because it gets chilly on the water)
- Cash and/or credit card (for tour guide tip and other purchases)
It's best to wear a swimsuit and a cover-up or T-shirt with sandals for the trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
There are several theories about the origin of the swimming pigs. The most logical is that when the Exumas gained popularity with the rich and famous in the 1980s and '90s, the resident pigs were too smelly to stay and were hence moved to the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay.
It is generally safe provided you're respectful of the animals. However, you should keep in mind that the pigs are known to bite if they're hungry and think you might have food you're not sharing. Because Big Major Cay is their home, they also defecate on the shoreline and in the water.
Most tour operators do not allow children under age 2 on these excursions, and based on our experience, we don't recommend bringing toddlers and young children in general — even if rates are free or discounted for them. Wait until your kids are a bit older.
Swimming with pigs on Big Major Cay – the original Pig Beach in the Bahamas – will cost you several hundred dollars – in part because Big Major Cay is a remote destination only accessible by boat. Of course, it is also pricey because of its popularity. Copycat experiences like swimming with the pigs on Rose Island are cheaper, but less authentic.
Why Trust U.S. News Travel
Amanda Norcross previously visited Pig Beach during a press trip to the Bahamas. Disheartened by tourists' mistreatment of the pigs, she aims to educate travelers on how to visit Big Major Cay and other animal-centric destinations responsibly.

A cruise to nowhere: Royal Caribbean sailing canceled after guests boarded
A Royal Caribbean International Alaska voyage became a cruise to nowhere over the weekend, with the line canceling the sailing after guests had already boarded.
The cruise line’s Radiance of the Seas ship experienced propulsion issues, forcing it to shorten and eventually scrap the weeklong itinerary, according to notices shared with guests. The sailing was originally set to depart from Vancouver on Friday.
Charlene Chong, who was on board with her husband, their 3-year and 11-month-old children, and her parents, said passengers were notified Saturday afternoon that the cruise was canceled. The 34-year-old teacher and her husband previously took a cruise for their honeymoon, but this marked their first trip with Royal Caribbean.
“My parents had wanted to go to Alaska for a really long time,” said Chong, who lives in Vancouver.
The cruise line warned guests several days before boarding that the ship had a “technical issue with its propulsion system,” according to an email sent to passengers that Chong shared with USA TODAY. The line later pushed the departure back by two days to allow more time for repairs.
Royal Caribbean said boarding would proceed as planned but that the terminal would close Friday evening due to U.S. Customs and Border Protection rules. Passengers would not be able to leave until the ship arrived at Icy Strait Point.
“We were going stir crazy a little bit,” said Chong.
Royal Caribbean gave guests onboard credit worth two days of their fare, a future cruise credit of the same amount, complimentary drinks and other compensation, another email said.
According to Chong, the ship sailed toward a nearby cargo port, but the captain announced Saturday afternoon that the sailing could not proceed and that guests would need to disembark by Sunday at 4 p.m. Chong said she and her family were “lucky” they were local, but she saw other guests scrambling to change their flights and find accommodations.
Your cruise was canceled: Now what?
“We understand the disappointment due to this unfortunate turn of events,” the cruise line said in a letter shared with guests. “We truly extend our sincerest apologies for the continued unforeseen disruptions to your vacation.”
Royal Caribbean gave them their money back as onboard credit with any remaining amount refunded, increased their future cruise credit to 100% of their fare and kept its open-bar policy for the remaining time on board. The line also offered to reimburse trip change fees up to $250 for guests traveling domestically and $400 for international travel and additional reimbursements for hotel and transportation costs, among other compensation.
“Due to a technical issue, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the April 26 sailing," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "Guests will receive a full refund and 100% future cruise credit, and have been notified directly.” The spokesperson did not comment on the specifics of Chong's experience.
The ship will resume service for its May 3 sailing.
After they got home, Chong and her family booked a trip to Mexico instead – though her parents decided not to join as they were “a bit exhausted by the whole ordeal.” For now, she’s not inclined to use the future cruise credit. “I would like to go to Alaska,” she said. “I'm not sure if I want to go with them.”

The staff's professionalism and warmth added a personal touch that made the trip even more special. One of the highlights was the diverse range of activities. Whether it was exploring the lush landscapes, engaging in water sports, or simply relaxing on the pristine beaches, there was something for everyone. The excursions were well-organized, providing a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The cultural experiences were particularly enriching. We got to immerse ourselves in the local Bahamian culture, from the delicious cuisine to the lively music and dance. It was a delight to interact with the friendly locals and learn about their way of life. Above all, the stunning natural beauty of the Bahamas was breathtaking. I loved this tour. It’s not a luxury cruise, you live aboard the boat and cook together. It’s managed by a German company, being non-German speaking I had no issues, the skipper and other crew members could speak English well. This is the best way to see the remote islands of St Lucia/St Vincent and learn the basics of sailing.

The other thing that you should think of is weather conditions. The temperature in the Caribbean has minimal variations throughout the year with a minimum of 20 Celcius degrees.
