It is surrounded by centres of Italian, Portuguese, Greek, Jewish, and French/Quebecois cultures and ultimately comes to a perfect blend in Mile End. This fusion of cultures is truly best represented in this area. It is so easy to get distracted by a shop, bar, coffee spot, or restaurant while in Mile End.

10 Food Dishes That Are Absolute Symbols of Canada

A re you thinking about taking a trip to Canada? As the second largest country in the world, Canada is a beautiful place to visit with family and friends. From inviting cities to stunning scenery at places like  Banff National Park , Canada offers plenty for locals and visitors to enjoy. As you plan your trip, don’t forget to think about traveling for Canadian cuisine. Plan out your meals to ensure you get a taste of the food dishes that are symbols of Canada . Read on for some inspiration!

#1. Poutine

If you’re trying to get the Canadian culinary experience, start your journey with poutine. This iconic Canadian meal originated in Quebec, and people enjoy it around the world today. There is nothing better than French fries topped with cheese curds and savory gravy. Poutine is simple yet comforting and is one of the food dishes that are symbols of Canada .

#2. Maple Syrup

Canadians prefer to call maple syrup “liquid gold” because it is one of the food dishes that are symbols of Canada. Maple syrup comes from the  maple tree  and is often the star of Canadian cuisine. In fact, the Canadian flag proudly boasts the maple leaf. While maple is a popular flavor in many Canadian dishes, the preferred way to enjoy the sweet treat is just how you would expect — on a tall stack of pancakes!

#3. Beavertails

Created in Ontario, beavertails are sweet Canadian pastries shaped like a flat beaver’s tail. This authentic treat is fried and topped with butter and different toppings. It was trademarked in 1978 and is still a staple dessert in Canada today.

#4. Montreal-style bagel

If you’re looking for authentic Canadian cuisine, travel to Montreal for a locally-made bagel. While the shape and look are similar to a bagel from New York City, Montreal-style bagels are sweeter and thinner with a dense texture. Also, bakers coat this style of bagel with seeds or salt and can be enjoyed in a cozy cafe during your travels.

#5. Hawaiian Pizza

While many people believe Hawaiian pizza originates from Hawaii , it is actually from Canada. This classic pie is topped with ham and pineapple. Pineapple is a traditional Hawaiian fruit, which prompted the confusion regarding this delicious pizza’s title. Regardless of where it came from, the question remains. Does pineapple belong on pizza?

#6. Tourtière

If you’re searching for Canadian comfort food, treat yourself to a piece of tourtière. Typically filled with beef, pork, or veal, this traditional meat pie originated in Quebec. In fact, tourtière is an iconic Canadian dish served at a New Year’s dinner.

#7. Montreal-style smoked meat

This famous deli meat sandwich originated in Montreal. The flavor comes from the smoked brisket which resembles corned beef or pastrami on a sandwich. Indulge in this Canadian staple served on rye bread coated in yellow mustard.

#8. Sugar Pie

A popular dessert in Canada, sugar pie came to the country when French people immigrated from France. It is a classic, open pie with simple flavors. Maple syrup is a common sweetener in this dish. Sugar pie is also an iconic dessert to serve during holidays.

#9. Peameal Bacon

While many people refer to it as Canadian bacon, Peameal bacon is a Canadian culinary staple. Made with lean, boneless pork, Peameal bacon is a popular Canadian meat served during breakfast. It’s easy to find at delis, cafes, and local markets during your travels.

#10. Maple Taffy

You can’t visit Canada without tasting this classic sweet treat. Maple taffy originated in Quebec and is the perfect snack during a snowy day. It is traditionally made by pouring boiling maple syrup in the snow so it hardens immediately on impact. From there, roll the sticky syrup onto a popsicle stick and enjoy.

Revealed: Montreal ranked one of the world’s 20 best cities for food in 2024

This global ranking of the world’s culinary capitals, whether for fine dining or affordable street eats, reveals the very best cities for eating and drinking right now.

Laura Osborne

Calling all food lovers: The 20 best global cities for eating and drinking right now have been released and Montreal is firmly in the mix.

Whether it’s Montreal’s famed global, culinary scene and haute cuisine , or our famous dishes and legendary  cheap eats, the city—one of the most restaurant-dense spots in North America—has got it all going on.

Marcus

While it would be a cardinal sin not to grab a poutine , hot dog or to visit Montreal’s best delis , diners and sandwich shops for some choice smoked meat, it’s just as sinful not to eat from the next-level selection of the city's best restaurants and the hottest new tables ).

Reuben's

And we haven’t even talked about our tried and true world class bagels .

St-Viateur Bagel & Café

When the only Canadian restaurant to make the World’s 50 Best hottest global restaurant openings list for 2024 is in Montreal, and the city’s classic eateries are elevating their culinary game in the face of staffing shortages and rising costs, you know you’re in the right place to eat your heart out.

Kabinet

And with forward-thinking chefs like Derek Dammann and Liam Hopkins involved in one of the most high-profile restaurant openings Montreal has ever seen (if you haven’t been to Le 9e in the Montreal Eaton Centre , run, don't walk), and rooftop and terrasse season in full swing, now is the time to dig in.

Le 9e

The buzz around Montreal’s downtown core continues to build with Chef Paul Toussaint (Kamuy, Paul Toussaint and Americas BBQ at Time Out Market Montréal ) who just won a top award on Canada's 100 Best Restaurants List 2024 on the heels of the exclusive culinary experience Chefs on Tour .

Paul Toussaint

Plus the arrival of the city’s best smash burger and a new local brasserie helmed by the renowned chef at the heart of Le Coureur des Bois bistro, Cabane du Coureur, and Restaurant H3.

Chez Simon Cantine Urbaine

And just thinking about all the food vendors serving up mouthwatering eats at the city’s back-to-back summer and fall festival line-up is making us hungry.

First Fridays

Home to Canada’s largest food truck festival , the most popular chef in the country and the coolest street in the world dotted with Michelin-worthy restaurants, tiki bars and cheap eats galore, it’s easy to see why Montreal made the list.

Falafel St.Jacques

Even Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively can’t stay away.

What is the methodology behind Time Out’s culinary ranking?

To truly experience a city, you need to taste its cuisine. But what makes a food city truly exceptional? It’s not just about awards and Michelin stars—it’s about diversity. The key lies in offering high-quality meals at reasonable prices. Time Out asked thousands of locals to rate how good and affordable their city’s dining scene is right now.

Old Montreal

Residents shared their insights on must-visit restaurants, iconic dishes, and the best budget-friendly bites. They also evaluated their city’s food scene for both quality and affordability. Time Out then refined the list by excluding cities with lower overall ratings and featuring only the top-rated city from each country. Additionally,  the global network of Time Out editors and writers provided their take on what makes their city a dynamic dining destination in 2024, along with their top dining recommendations.

Otto Yakitori Izakaya

Time Out has a rich history of food expertise. For decades, Time Out has been exploring and reviewing restaurants in the world’s best cities to keep our best-of lists up-to-date. This expertise has materialized in Time Out Markets across the globe, where top-notch food, drink, and cultural experiences come together under one roof. For this feature, Time Out consulted Time Out Market chefs to highlight three culinary capitals that deserve special attention for their vibrant food scenes.

Jennifer Lopez abruptly cancels This Is Me... Live concert tour, including 3 Canadian dates

Tour was to have included stops in toronto and montreal in august.

Jennifer Lopez appears at the movie premiere of 'The Flash' in L.A., in June 2023.

Social Sharing

Jennifer Lopez said on Friday that her This Is Me... Live  summer concert tour has been cancelled so she can take time to be with her family.

Lopez wrote on her website that she is "completely heartsick and devastated" about letting her fans down.

"Please know that I wouldn't do this if I didn't feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again," she added.

Representatives for concert promoter Live Nation also announced on Friday that the On the Floor singer needs a break to be with "her children, family and close friends."

Lopez had been slated to play shows in Toronto and Montreal in August. The Canadian Ticketmaster website did not appear to list any other related tour dates on this side of the border as of Friday evening .

The tour cancellation comes amid rampant speculation in the media that Lopez's marriage to actor Ben Affleck is on the rocks and may lead to their separation.

7 shows previously cancelled

Lopez had already cancelled seven dates of the North American tour in early May.

The 54-year-old was going to be performing songs from her recent 2024 album This is Me... Now  as a companion to the Amazon MGM documentary of the same name.

Both the album and the documentary were released in February with the album peaking at number 38 on the Billboard album charts.

The tour was originally set to begin in Orlando, Fla., on June 26 and finish on Aug. 17 at New York's Madison Square Garden.
