Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, eurostar ski train winter 2023/24.

What's new in 2023/24?   In previous years, Eurostar have run a direct ski train from London to the French Alps on winter weekends.  Suspended during the pandemic, it ran as a Travelski charter train in winter 2021/22 and 2022/23.  In winter 2023/24 it will take a different form, the ski train will consist of a Eurostar train to Lille Europe for an easy same-station change onto a Eurostar (formerly Thalys) high-speed train to Moutiers & Bourg-St-Maurice.

London to Bourg St Maurice is 1130 km (702 miles).

How much does it cost?

London to Moutiers. Aime or Bourg starts at £99 each way in 2nd class or £149 in 1st class.

Peak period fares from 14 December to 13 January start from £149 each way in 2nd class or £199 in 1st class.

Fares vary like air fares, so book ahead.

How to buy tickets

Buy tickets at www.eurostar.com or www.thetrainline.com .  Tickets went on sale on 31 August 2023.

www.thetrainline.com can also book travel to the French Alps on any day of the week using Eurostar + normal French trains, booking for most French trains over the winter will open in October.

For packages combining train travel, transfers to the resort and chalet/hotel accommodation, SNO ( www.sno.co.uk/ski-holidays/ski-train-ski-holidays ) do a wide selection of skiing holidays by train to French, Austrian, Swiss and Italian ski resorts.

What are the trains like?

London to Lille is by Eurostar train with cafe-bar, power sockets & free WiFi

1st class fares on Eurostar include a light breakfast outbound, light meal with wine inbound.

Lille to Bourg St Maurice is by Eurostar (formerly Thalys high-speed ski train with catering, power sockets & free WiFi.

In contrast to normal Eurostar (formerly Thalys) trains , the Eurostar (formerly Thalys) ski train has only one category of 1st class (not two) and a tray meal is included for all 1st class passengers.

Which resort to choose?

Les Arcs is the easiest to reach, it's linked by a 10-minute funicular (mountain railway) ride up the mountain from Bourg St Maurice railway station at the foot of the mountain.  It's a modern resort, good for beginners, and billed as 'home of the snowboard'.

Val d'Isère is a well-known resort higher up the valley, better for intermediate and advanced skiers than beginners.

Méribel is a big ski city with many British visitors.

La Plagne is a series of picturesque villages and tree-lined pistes.

The Eurostar ski train from London to the French Alps: giving visitors the chance to add a weekend ski trip in France to their UK itinerary.

Picture it: Winter in London.

You’re cozying up with hot cups of Earl Grey in between visits to the British Museum and Borough Market . You’re as snug as a bug in a rug, but something’s missing from this picture-perfect winter holiday.

London doesn’t see loads of snow, and when it does, you shouldn’t expect a sled-worthy scene. If only you could suddenly transport yourself to the French Alps just for a simple weekend of snowy bliss…

Oh wait, you can!

The Eurostar ski train is your ticket to traveling to the Alps from London with ease.

Eurostar ski train: go from London to the Alps

Yeah, seriously.

We know there’s that English Channel in the way, but nothing will stop us from getting Britain’s skiers and snowboarders to some of the best ski resorts in Europe (not to mention a few of the best après-ski bars in Europe , as well).

Here’s everything you need to know about the Eurostar Snow train.

Is the Eurostar Snow train the same as the Eurostar ski train?

Tomayto, tomahto. Officially called the Eurostar Snow train, you’ll hear this route linking London and the French Alps referred to as the Eurostar ski train as well.

Where does the Eurostar ski train stop?

The Eurostar ski train is considered a Eurostar direct ski train, departing London St Pancras, stopping for a train transfer in Lille, then continuing on to Chambéry, Albertville, Moûtiers, Aime-la-Plagne and Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

What days does the Eurostar ski train run?

The Eurostar ski train runs only on Saturdays and Sundays. More specifically, it only leaves London on Saturdays and only returns to London on Sundays.

Will the ski train run in 2024?

Yes, the Eurostar ski train will run from London to the French Alps in 2024. The Eurostar ski train 2023/2024 schedule is already out: service runs between December 16, 2023, and February 4, 2023, departing Saturdays and returning on Sundays.

Image credit, Getty Images, Ross Woodhall. Location, Rhone-Alpes ,  France.

Where does the snow train go?

The Eurostar ski train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice also includes stops in Chambéry, Albertville, Moûtiers, and Aime-la-Plagne. Remember that the connection in Lille is not a ski-resort stop on the snow train to the Alps.

How to go from London to the Alps on the Eurostar ski train

First thing’s first: you’ve got to know where to go in London to get all the way to France.

London St Pancras International railway station is where you need to start. Some savvy travelers know it as the rail line that you can ride beneath the English Channel to Paris . Potterheads will know it as the other train station next to Platform 9 ¾ at Kings Cross . London to Alps train tickets can be purchased at the station or before you arrive through Trainline.

  • London to Alps train time: 8 hours if you disembark at the final station, Bourg-St-Maurice
  • London to Alps train cost: $199 for a Standard ticket; $266 for Standard Premier
  • London to Alps train tickets: Super easy to purchase through Trainline

And yes, you can bring your own skis and snowboards on the train as part of your included luggage allowance.

Remember, there’s a train transfer in Lille, and it ain’t exactly a sightseeing stop either. Instead of rushing to grab something to eat at the train station, take advantage of the amenities on the Eurostar ski train: namely, the food and drinks served in Café Métropole. Pastries, sandwiches, cottage pie, espresso, hot chocolate, and even alcohol are served on board.

🚆 Trainline tip: A Standard Premier ticket on the Eurostar has the perk of the meal being served right at your comfortable seat, which means you can stream your favorite movies and shows using the free WiFi without interruption.

Take a nap and wake up in the French Alps. The Eurostar ski train stops in this order:

  • Albertville
  • Aime-la-Plagne
  • Bourg-Saint-Maurice

Eurostar Launches New Service to the French Alps Just in Time for Ski Season

The new route will run from London to several different top resorts in France with a stop in Lille, France.

eurostar ski trip

The Eurostar train is launching a new weekly service this winter, making it easier to get to the French Alps in time for ski season.

The new train, as part of the Eurostar Snow service, will run from London to several different top resorts in France with a stop in Lille, France, according to the company . Tickets for the new train service, which went on sale on Thursday, start at just £99 (about $125).

“We're proud to offer our customers a sustainable travel option to the Alps by launching our first connecting service as Eurostar Group,” Francois Le Doze, the chief commercial officer for the Eurostar Group, said in a statement. “With a quick and easy connection, competitive pricing and five stops to choose from, passengers can enjoy a seamless experience with us from the city of London to the snowcapped mountains of France.”

The journey will take skiers and snowboarders (and anyone else wanting to soak up the views of Europe’s amazing Alps) from London to Lille. From there, travelers will board a Eurostar continental train to some of the top ski resorts in Europe , including in Chambéry, Albertville, Moutiers, and Aime-La Plagne. Bourg-Saint-Maurice will be the train’s final destination.

The train will run from London to France every Saturday for eight weekends from Dec. 16 through Feb. 3, and will run from France to London every Sunday for eight weekends from Dec. 17 through Feb. 4.

Travelers who take the train will be able to bring two suitcases, one piece of hand luggage, and their skis or snowboard included in the cost of their ticket.

Eurostar first started running trains between London and Paris in 1994 after the Channel Tunnel was complete, and now connects travelers to major cities across Europe from Brussels to Amsterdam, Lyon , and more. Last year, Eurostar and Thalys teamed up to create the Eurostar Group, an alliance between two of Europe’s major high-speed train operators.

Eurostar Ski Train - Ski Holidays To The Alps

Rejoice! The Eurostar ski train service is back for Winter 2023/24. The new service via. Lille commences from London St. Pancras on Saturday 16th December, and will run for eight weekends until Sunday 4th February 2024.

The quickest route on the new service takes around 7hrs 30 mins, and sees you depart London in the morning, and arrive in the Alps late afternoon.

Outbound services from London will run every Saturday. Inbound services from the Alps will run every Sunday. That means you need 8 nights in the Alps, and with flexible hotel stays SkiWeekends are in the perfect position to offer 8-night Eurostar ski holidays. Here's the summary:

  • Enjoy travelling by Eurostar to France - from London to Moutiers, Aime La Plagne or Bourg-Saint-Maurice. You book the train, we'll sort the rest.
  • Reduce your carbon emissions by up to 95%* versus flying to the Alps
  • We can arrange 7 day ski passes for you
  • Competitively priced transfer options to resorts across the Three Valleys, Tignes, Val d'Isere, La Plagne and Les Arcs
  • Need ski / snowboard hire? We can sort that too.

EUROSTAR HOLIDAY OPTIONS

Whilst other ski holiday providers don't offer much flexibility on their Saturday to Saturday, 7-night ski holidays (they will add a hotel stay in Bourg St. Maurice or Moutiers on the final night), SkiWeekends are pleased to offer a range of flexible ski holidays, including 8 night durations at a range of top ski resorts in the French Alps.

In fact we ran a poll on social media when we found out about the 8-night ski train package options, and an overwhelming 80% of you voted you'd prefer an extra night in resort, rather than be shipped down the hill for an extra check-in, check-out experience at another hotel.

Personally we'd also enjoy an extra night in resort. For your return journey both Bourg and Moutier are - on average - around a 30 minute journey from most ski resorts. With the first Eurostar train departing Bourg at 08:26 each Sunday morning, you wouldn't have to leave much before 7am to get your train home.

The Eurostar Snow service will depart from London's St Pancras International station on Saturday mornings at 9:01 am, taking passengers on an 8-hour journey to the French Alps. The train will stop in Lille, France briefly to allow for a change of trains. It will then continue on to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, arriving at 6:20 p.m. Located in the Savoie region of the French Alps, Bourg-Saint-Maurice provides access to major ski resorts like Les Arcs, La Plagne, Val d’Isère, and Tignes.

On Sundays, a return train will leave Bourg-Saint-Maurice at 8:26 a.m., arriving back in London at 4 p.m. after a brief stop in Lille. In total, the return trip takes around 8.5 hours.

This provides skiers a car-free way to reach many of the most popular ski destinations in the French Alps. Transfer buses and taxis will be available to take travelers directly from the train stations to their final resort.

Eurostar previously operated a similar direct ski train service along with partner Travelski Express. However, the direct service was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021 and 2022, Eurostar ran the service again with Travelski but required a change in Lille.

The new Eurostar Snow service follows the same Lille transfer model but will be fully operated by Eurostar. Travelski and other tour operators will still be able to sell tickets.

Tickets on Sale Starting August 31

Eurostar will begin selling tickets for the Eurostar Snow service on August 31, 2022. The service will run every Saturday from December 17, 2022, to February 4, 2023, for a total of eight weekends during the height of ski season.

Sample fares will start at £99 one-way for a standard class ticket and £149 for Eurostar's standard premier class. Fares will be higher during peak ski weeks around the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Baggage Allowance Includes Skis

Courmayeur skiing

Recognizing the needs of skiers, Eurostar Snow will offer a generous baggage allowance for passengers. Each traveler can bring two large suitcases, one smaller carry-on bag, and either skis or a snowboard at no extra cost .

This allows skiers to bring most of their gear with them and avoid high rental costs at the ski resorts. Other ski trains in Europe charge additional fees for transporting ski equipment.

Offers Sustainable Alternative to Flying

Eurostar is marketing the new Eurostar Snow service as an environmentally friendly way for British skiers to reach the Alps. Transferring by rail rather than flying significantly reduces carbon emissions.

The launch of the service is timed along with the growing demand for more sustainable ski trips among British skiers and snowboarders. Eurostar believes the train trip to the Alps appeals to eco-conscious travelers.

Builds On Eurostar's UK-Europe Train Network

The new seasonal ski service expands Eurostar's route network beyond its core business of transporting passengers between the UK and mainland Europe. Earlier this year, Eurostar merged with Thalys, another high-speed rail company operating in Europe.

Joint initiatives like Eurostar Snow help increase Eurostar Group's brand awareness across Europe and tap into the profitable ski travel market. The company may look to add more seasonal leisure routes in the future.

Challenges Remain

Travel with Ski

While catering to skiers with suitable baggage policies and direct transfers, running the ski service poses some challenges for Eurostar. The transfer in Lille adds an extra hour versus direct trains. And trains cannot match the frequency and flexibility of flights to smaller Alpine airports.

However, Eurostar believes there is strong demand for a more sustainable option, even if travel times are longer. The Alps rail service lets Eurostar promote its green credentials in the global fight against climate change.

Eurostar Train Times

From London to the Alps, here are the timings at time of publication:

Key Takeaway

  • Eurostar is launching a new direct weekend ski train called Eurostar Snow from London to the French Alps for the 2023-2024 winter season.
  • The train will run to Bourg-Saint-Maurice and connect skiers to 16 major French ski resorts like Val d'Isère and Les Arcs.
  • It replaces a previous joint Eurostar/Travelski ski train that was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19.
  • Tickets go on sale August 31, with fares starting from £99 one-way and baggage allowance including skis at no extra cost.
  • Eurostar is marketing it as an eco-friendly alternative to flying, catering to the demand for more sustainable ski trips.
  • Challenges include longer travel times than flying and limited frequency, but Eurostar hopes the environmental benefits will attract travelers.

Take the Eurostar ski train to the Alps

22. November 2023 | Monica Adorno & OnTheSnow

Oh, sure, you can fly to the Alps, but that’s not much fun and may take a long time when you add in airport hassles. What if you could take the Eurostar ski train and reach your favourite resort within a few hours? Wouldn’t it be nice to start your ski holiday from the moment you step onto the train?.

No budget airlines or popping ears, rather, a smooth ride out of the city, past the English countryside, with a relaxing scenic journey ahead of you. In addition, you’ll be cutting your carbon footprint by a huge 85 percent! And with many of our ski resorts at risk from climate change, that should give pause for thought.

If you’re considering taking the Eurostar ski train to the Alps, check out these top resorts . . .

Best ski resorts by train

Ski train to meribel.

In the middle of the expansive 3 Vallees ski area in the Tarentaise region of France sits Meribel, a beautifully designed resort made up of three neighbouring villages: Méribel Centre, Méribel-Mottaret and Méribel Village. For mileage, you won’t get better: the ski lift system offers access to 600km of piste and 120km of cross-country skiing. The après is excellent too and is one of the best that France has to offer. This is well-known as a family-favourite resort and kids love a train ride.

By train : Travel from London St. Pancras all the way to Lyon Part Dieu. Pick up a coffee and croissant before departing from the same station at and riding the final 2 and half hours to Moutiers.

If you’re taking the daytime direct Eurostar ski train, then a shared transfer service between Moutiers station and the resort is available to take you to your chalet or hotel comfortably and for a modest price.  The service, run by Three Vallee Transfer in partnership with Snowcarbon and 3 Vallees Association, means that from approximately €35 per person you can be met at the Moutiers station by a driver who waits for the Eurostar to arrive, and then brings you to the door of your hotel or chalet. The same service is available from Meribel to Moutiers.

Ski train to La Clusaz

Nestled in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps, pretty La Clusaz has a traditional French feel and ambience. The resort has five interlinked ski areas which make for a decent variety of terrain; it also has great, but relatively unknown, backcountry terrain.

If you happen to visit during a full moon, check out the full-moon skiing party held throughout the winter. Mountainside bars are open with live music and dancing and plenty of good cheer! Lucky then that the resort can be reached in a matter of 8.25 hours by ski train.

By train : To reach La Clusaz, jump aboard the Eurostar from London St. Pancras. Arrive in Paris-Nord and take a short taxi ride to Paris-Lyon. Take the high-speed TGV (train de grand vitesse) to Annecy, which takes 3 hours 45 minutes and leaves you a 40 minute taxi ride from La Clusaz. Travel as an individual or included in holiday packages.

Ski train to Les Arcs

One of France’s most popular snowboarding resorts is extremely easy to reach on the Eurostar.

Les Arcs’s nearest station is Bourg-St-Maurice and in the ski season there are regular Saturday trains during the day and overnight Eurostar ski trains on Fridays. From Bourg St Maurice you can pick up a bus to resort or a transfer minibus. The train about eight hours from London. Before you know it, you’ll be in freerider heaven.

Other things we love about Les Arcs: its speed-skiing track and the recently completed Mille 8 development – complete with a brand spanking-new gondola to replace the Villards chairlift, a beginners’ area with magic carpet and the ‘discovery’ blue run. Les Arcs: it never fails to impress.

By train : Departing from London St. Pancras take the Eurostar to Paris-Nord. Transfer to Paris-Lyon and depart for Chambery, a journey that clocks in at a little under 3 hours. From Chambery and take the local train for roughly 55 minutes to Bourg St Maurice. From there just hop aboard the funicular train to Les Arcs in 7 minutes.

Ski train to Montgenèvre

Traditional, pretty and trendy, Montgenèvre is a hit with young families. The resort has a wide range of intermediate-friendly slopes and is connected to the vast Milky Way ski area. Beginners have sun-facing slopes next to the village and snow cover is enhanced with the resort’s snow-making machines.

This world-famous resorts in the Austrian Tirol are waiting for your train to arrive. It’s easy to buy tickets and arrange accommodation, even if most package operators only offer tours with flights. So, no worries.

Ski train to Alpbach

The ski resort of Alpbach is one of the most picturesque villages in the Tyrol ski area. An eight-person gondola links the Alpbach side of the resort with the Wildschönau valley; together they make up the Ski Juwel region which comprises the resorts of Reith, Oberau and Niederau.

Alpbach itself is small and compact, the vibe is family-friendly and the nightlife is buzzing. Non-ski activities include winter walking and an open-air ice rink at Reith.

By train : To get there from London, take the Eurostar from St. Pancras to Brussels. From Brussels, hop on a InterCity Express to Frankfurt. Next you need to catch a train to Munich, from which you’ll make your final connection, EuroCity train from Munich to Woergl. This trip clocks in at nearly 17 hours.

Ski train to St. Anton am Arlberg

Extreme off-piste terrain and hard-core drinking go hand in hand at one of Austria’s better-known resorts. Altogether there are 280km of slopes served by 85 lifts in the Arlberg ski area (which also includes the resorts of St Christoph, Lech, Zürs and Stuben), so skiers of all levels will find plenty of accessible terrain. Having said that, it’s a resort best suited to intermediate and expert skiers. One of our favourite routes is the racecourse from Kapall; the couloirs off the Schindlergrat are gnarly and the no-fall zone off Valluga Nord presents some terrifying opportunities to test yourself.

Switzerland

Unlike other European trains, the Swiss carriages are often panoramic, designed for passengers to take in the stunning landscape. That makes them extra-popular in tourist areas. The oversized windows curve into the ceilings. Switzerland is perfect for train travel. Just like for Austria, package tours usually include air, not train. So what? Most Swiss ski area have train stations right at the resorts. It’s easy to book train travel.

Ski train to Wengen

Standing at the foot of the striking Jungfrau mountain range is Wengen, a gorgeous alpine village in the Bernese Oberland.

The village is charming and atmospheric, with a family-friendly feel and low-key nightlife. Non-ski activities include “flight-seeing” by helicopter, heli-skiing, as well as 20km of winter walking trails, eight curling rinks and miles of toboggan runs.

Three resorts, Grindelwald, Wengen and Murren, are covered by the Jungfrau regional lift pass so what are you waiting for? Time to travel to the chocolate-box land.

This is where Eurostar shines. Here’s a tip: Take Eurostar to Paris, overnight couchette train from Paris to L’Hospitalet Pres Andorra, then a scenic ride over the mountains. The packagers want you to fly so book train and accommodation yourself. Easy to do and worth it.

Ski train to Grandvalira

Located in the heart of the Pyrennees, Grandvalira is a huge ski area that comprises Pas de la Casa and Soldeu as well as a number of lesser-known resorts. It has benefitted from investment in recent years and has become a great all-round resort. It’s the only resort in the Pyrenees with four snowparks and a freestyle academy. For the 2015-2016 winter season, the resort has made the biggest investment in its history – some 16 million Euros. A new cable car in the Abelletes area is under construction and the resort’s many terraces are being revamped.

By train : Hop aboard the Eurostar London St. Pancras and arrive at Paris-Nord. Transfer to Paris-Austerlitz and depart from there on a night train. From there, you can sleep on the couchette sleeper all the way to L’Hospitalet where you’ll arrive first thing, fresh and ready to ski on the same day. The trip should take about 15 hours.

The latest iteration of the Snow Train travelling ‘London to the Alps’ on Eurostar is now more popular than ever, as the most low-carbon route to the slopes, so here’s our guide to letting the Ski Train take the strain:

Ski Trains Map

Unlike flying, you'll not have to worry about excess baggage and ski carriage costs, because you don't pay to take your skis on the train and you don't have to stay within a weight limit for your bag.

We all want to avoid our carbon footprint melting the ancient glaciers of the alps, and the train is a massively less carbon-intensive way to travel than flying. This greening of your holiday is compounded because your electric train is travelling through France, which has the highest percentage of nuclear power in the world. All things electric there are very low carbon.

The biggest news for 2024 ski holidays is the huge increase in how many ski resorts can be accessed by the Ski Train, with transfers to all the big French favourites like Val d'lsere , Meribel , Tignes and Val Thorens , plus Austrian and Swiss big-hitters like St Anton and St Moritz .

The Best Ski Resorts for Travelling by Train

Going skiing by train isn’t just great for the environment – it’s often quicker too. Dan Elkan, founder of Snowcarbon.co.uk , and a ski train expert, tells you everything you need to know about getting to the Alps by train.

Like the story of the tortoise and the hare, journeys to ski resorts never quite make sense. You’d imagine that, for speed, flying to the Alps would beat train travel hands down. But in my experience, it rarely works like that. Airport queues, cramped flights and crawling transfers (which invariably take longer than they are supposed to), can add up to long delays. I learned the hard way that flying isn’t the best way to the white stuff. Now, like many other skiers, I travel to the ski resorts of the Alps by train every time.

Ski holidays by train certainly feel different from flying: legroom, scenery, a café bar and most importantly, the feeling that your holiday has already started. Plus, your journey guzzles less fuel and produces only a fraction of the carbon emissions of flying, too.

So what are your options to get to ski resorts by train?

french-TGV-train

The Ski Train

The simplest way to European ski resorts by train has always been the direct Eurostar Ski Train direct from London to the Tarentaise region of the French Alps. But things have changed since we last wrote about the joys of travelling to French ski resorts by train in 2016. The direct Eurostar ski train is no longer running – yet another victim of the pandemic. The good news, however, is that a couple of tour operators have stepped up to fill the gap in the market, so while you can't buy Eurostar ski train tickets by themselves any more, there are still plenty of options.

The TravelSki Express

Since last season, French tour operator TravelSki has chartered entire trains, rebranding them the ‘ Travelski Express ’.   The downside of this is that you can only buy tickets for the Travelski Express as part of a whole ski holiday package, that includes train, transfer, accommodation, and a seven-day lift pass.

The ski resorts served by the new Tavelski Express however, do include of the French Alps big hitters : La Plagne ,   Les Arcs ,   Les Menuires ,  Méribel , Tignes   and Val d’Isère . The outbound journey — overnight on Fridays — drops you in the Alps in time for first lifts on Saturday mornings. The included transfer means that there’s no waiting around for a bus and no need to book a taxi. Like the Ski Train before it, the Travelski Express only has sit-up seats but no flat beds, so you might not get the best night’s sleep, and booze is banned. Coming back from the Alps, however, the journey is by day (and alcohol is permitted).

The Inghams-Eurostar Snow Train

Not to be outdone by their French counterparts, UK-based skiing experts Inghams have launched a brand new ski train option for the 2023-24 season, teaming up with Eurostar to offer packages to Val d'Isere, Tignes and Les Arcs. Operating on eight weekends throughout the winter, starting from December 16th 2023, the train will carry passengers from London Kings Cross to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, with one easy platform change at Lille. Not only does this avoid the considerably more awkward station change you'd need to do in Paris if you travelled by train independently (see below) it can help reduce the costs of your overall holiday too. Running from Saturday to Sunday, the new train also offers train-travelling guests an extra day on the slopes versus those who book conventional flight-and-transfer packages with Inghams. The tour operator is starting slowly this first winter, pre-purchasing an allocation of 10 seats per week on the Eurostar-operated trains, but they have the option to sell more on request. And like a TGV gathering speed, they're anticipating demand will only grow in the winters to come.

Independent Travel to the Alps by Train

The other way to get to the slopes by train is, of course, to travel independently. Travelling independently gives you a far wider choice of resorts. Combining a Eurostar and a TGV (mostly via Paris) will get you to any destination in France, and some resorts in Italy , within a day. By adding another train to the journey, you can get to resorts in Switzerland and some of Austria's finest ski resorts , too.

Some skiers are put off by the idea of changing stations in Paris, but if you don’t want to cross Paris by Metro, a taxi from the taxi rank or a pre-booked taxi makes it smoother.

To get yourself into resort earlier on your first day or give yourself more rail options, you could also consider taking a Eurostar to Paris, Lille, or Brussels one night earlier, stopping over, and then catching a train to the Alps from there the next morning.

austrian-sleeper-train

Sleeper Trains to Austria

The Tirol region is home to some of Austria’s best resorts , many of which have a train station located right in the village. Overnight journeys to this region are easy. You take a Eurostar to Brussels, switch to the adjacent platform and board an ICE train, whose restaurant carriages serve draft beer, wine, and the kind of hot meals and fresh salads that wouldn’t be out of place in any bistro.

At Cologne, grab a beer opposite the station before taking a NightJet sleeper train, which has two, three and four-berth sleeping compartments, to your ski destination. The overall journey is several hours longer than the direct TravelSki Express to France, but with a flat bed and privacy, you’re more likely to sleep soundly.

The New Night Train Renaissance

As well as the NightJet, there’s something of a night-train renaissance happening across Europe, and it’s about time. In 2016, for example, the French government axed lots of popular sleeper-train routes. Skiers and the French public protested, but the sole survivor of the cull was the Paris – Briancon route (good for the resorts of Serre Chevalier and Montgenevre).

Now, in all their infinite wisdom, the French railway authorities have decided to reinstate ten routes by 2030. The line linking Paris to the Pyrenees has already been reintroduced, and will soon be followed by Paris to Bourg St Maurice and Paris to St Gervais. Skiers can look forward to more wine, cheese and cosy couchette bonhomie.

How to Book a Ski Holiday by Train

Booking train travel to the Alps isn’t as straightforward as booking a flight. Some journeys can be easily booked online, and good starting points are the Rail Europe and Trainline websites. Be aware, however, that these websites don’t always show you the most suitable journey options, because the algorithms that power them can’t always cope with the complexities of the train-ticket systems.

If you’re in doubt or struggling, contact an expert rail-booking agent, such as The Travel Bureau or Trainseurope .  These experienced companies have sophisticated booking systems and can offer any combination of trains that you want, to anywhere in the Alps.

Also, online booking isn’t possible, for groups of 10 or more. So if you’ve got a big ski party, you’ll need to go to an agent too. As with flights, train fares increase the closer that you are to your desired date of travel, so book early where possible.

Here are eight of the best ski resorts to get to by rail – all of which have new and exciting things happening this winter. (NB: To calculate the comparative journey times, we’ve assumed that our example passenger lives in Central London, no more than a half hour away from St. Pancras station).

Getting from London to Les Arcs by train

Guide to the Eurostar Ski Train

Editor's note: Eurostar no longer runs a ski train. If you're looking to travel out to the Alps by train, see the latest options are on the website of snowcarbon

For a fast, convenient and greener way to the top French ski destinations this winter, book a seat on the Eurostar Ski Train.

Important Covid update: please note the information given below was compiled before the Covid pandemic. Travel times and journeys may now be different so you are advised to check before you book and travel with the relevant travel operators.

eurostar ski trip

Tickets are now on sale for this service that travels direct from central London to the heart of the French Alps. With a generous baggage allowance, two services a week (overnight or daytime), and no lengthy airline check-in delays, it's a great way to travel to the slopes this winter.

Where does it go?  The Ski Train whizzes straight from London to

the Alps, stopping at the destinations of Moutiers, Aime La Plagne and Bourg St Maurice.

Which resorts can I get to? These resorts are easily reachable by

bus or funicular railway from one of the three Ski Train stations:

eurostar ski trip

How does it work? Two services a week depart from London St Pancras (and Ashford International) throughout the winter season, from 20th of December 2019 to the 4th April 2020. There's a day time service and an overnight service. The Saturday daytime service departs on Saturdays from London St Pancras at 09:45 (or Ashford at 10.28). It's a terrific way to get to the slopes, enjoying the beautiful views of the French countryside from the comfort of your carriage as you speed down towards the Alps (arriving in Moutiers at 18:27, Aime La Plagne at 18:46, or Bourg St Maurice at 19:03). The overnight service departs on Friday evenings from London St Pancras at 19:45 (or from Ashford at 20.28), and you will awake in Moutiers (05:32), Aime La Plagne (05:57), or Bourg St Maurice (06:16) station. As you arrive early at these stations, you could take a bus, taxi, or funicular straight to your ski resort, and hit the slopes after breakfast on Saturday. Altibus provide transfers from these stations to the most popular resorts. NB. buying tickets online via Altibus is cheaper than at the station. Tickets and timetables are available at www.altibus.com .

One of the many benefits of the overnight ski train is that you can fit in two extra days' skiing on the relatively quieter Saturday changeover days - without having to pay for the extra nights' accommodation (ie. on arrival, because you arrive in the morning, once you've wiped the sleep from your eyes, you can hit the slopes before lunch; and on the last day, the departing train isn't until the evening, so you can fit in almost a full days' skiing).

Baggage Allowances One of the major attractions of the Eurostar Ski Train is the extended baggage allowance, with no weight restrictions. Each passenger can now take an extra item of luggage on top of the standard 2 cases measuring up to 85cm at their longest length, plus one item of hand luggage. Eurostar have also set aside an area in each carriage dedicated to stowing your large luggage, so you can keep your expensive skis or snowboard close at hand.

Check-in Eurostar recommend that you arrive 60 minutes prior to the Ski Train's scheduled departure time (rather than the usual 30 minute check-in time for standard Eurostar services). Just the time necessary to walk to your platform, stow your luggage, and crack open a bottle of French wine to get your holiday underway. Which brings us on to...

Seats Note that the Ski Train overnight service does not provide sleeper carriages . Passengers in standard class on both the daytime and overnight trains (tickets from £149 return) just have the standard seat, while those who opt for standard premier (from £229 return) can expect a carriage with more space and a larger seat. You may not have a bed, but what you lose on space you gain in time!

Food on board There are several options for the hungry passenger on the Ski Train. If you opt for a standard premier ticket you can expect two lights meals, along with drinks, to be served in your carriage. See the Eurostar website for more details on the refreshments they offer. For those with standard tickets, or who need extra fuel along the way, the bar-buffet offers a range of hot and cold meals, as well as snacks and drinks to keep you going. This is open until midnight on the overnight service. You can, of course, also take your own food and drink on board.

Fares Adult fares start at £149 return for non-flexible standard class tickets, and £229 return for non-flexible premier class. Children can travel from £100 return in standard class, and £185 return in standard premier. There are no hidden extras, only the cost of bus, taxi, or funicular journeys from the nearest train station to your ski resort (from €15 Adult return for the local bus shuttle service to most ski resorts.)

Book your ticket on the ski train >>

(tickets provided by Eurostar - they go on sale in July ahead of the coming winter season)

Arrival times and hotel check-in Bus and taxi journeys from the stations to the resorts take between 30 minutes and a maximum of 2 hours, depending on your resort and the weather conditions (the funicular trip from Bourge St Maurice to Les Arcs takes just 7 minutes). If you arrive on the overnight ski train, you can be up in your resort in time for breakfast, but it may be worth contacting your accommodation to arrange temporary luggage storage for your first morning of skiing, since check-in times are generally later than this.

Return journeys Return services depart from the nearest train station to your resort (although travellers should note that Aime La Plagne is not served by return Ski Trains ). Once again, you have a daytime or overnight service to choose from, departing either on Saturday morning or Saturday evening. The daytime train leaves from Bourg St Maurice at 09:34 or Moutiers at 10:14, and will have you back in Ashford at 15.37 and London at 16:13 the same day. Alternatively, you can catch the overnight train from Bourg St Maurice at 22:12 or Moutiers at 22:54, arriving at Ashford at 06.33 and London St Pancras at 07:16 on Sunday morning. Check the information on Eurostar's website - Eurostar Ski Train - for further details.
