TV Guide: Tour de France 2023 on SBS and SBS on demand

The 2023 Tour de France starts live on SBS and SBS on demand on July 1st to July 23rd

The 2023 Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift will be broadcasted live and free exclusively on SBS and SBS on demand with the men’s race starting from 1st July to 23rd July and the women’s race from 23rd July to the 30th July. 

From Bilbao to Paris – with 2,115 miles in between – 2023 will be the 120th anniversary of the tour. 

Reporting on location and bringing all the twists of both of the events will consist of a team of commentary experts. Matthew Keenan, Simon Gerrans, Dr Bridie O’Donnell, David McKenzie, Gracie Elvin and Christophe Mallet will be providing all the insight, with Mark Renshaw based in Australia to provide audiences with expert insights and post-stage analysis across SBS digital platforms. 

This week, Mediaweek spoke with Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme and SBS director of media sales, Adam Sadler  about this year’s event and what goes into the broadcast. 

MW: There are a lot of major events on the global sporting calendar, how significant is the Tour de France?

Prudhomme:  “The Tour is broadcast in 90 countries, and it’s three, four, or five hours a day during the three weeks. It’s sport of course, that’s the most important part, but its history, its geography makes people proud of their region. On a lot of the routes, you see smiles on everybody’s face – young, old, women, men, French, people from abroad. It’s it’s a social event, it’s not only a sporting event.”

Sadler:  “It’s more than just a cycling event for SBS. We’ve recently adopted a French chef by the name of  Guillaume Brahimi , he’s passionate about France, passionate about Australia, and he infuses that beautiful French culture into our cycling event. When we take this beautiful content out to our advertising agencies or partners, it’s more than just lycra and cycling. It’s about culture.”

MW: What can we expect this year from the Tour de France coverage?

Sadler:  “SBS is the home of cycling in Australia, there’s the Giro, the Vuelta, and the jewel in the crown is the Tour de France. Over 3.6 million Australians tune in to the Tour de France. This year we will be broadcasting in 1080p high definition, which you would have seen during the World Cup in 2022. We’ll give it the audience it deserves on our main channel, and also the best on-demand streaming service in Australia –  Apple rated SBS On Demand 4.8 , the highest rating in Australia.

Prudhomme:  “It’s thanks to the TV coverage, this is the only sports event you can love even if you don’t love the sport. That’s thanks to culture, thanks to geography, and to history. Livestream Tour de France 2024 in the US

Limited linear TV coverage of this year's Tour de France will be broadcast on NBC, with the network showing Stage 8 (Saturday, July 6) and Stage 14 (Saturday, July 13) live at 8 a.m. ET, as well as encore coverage of the penultimate Stage 20 (Saturday, July 20) at 4 p.m. ET.

Quick tips for streaming Tour de France 2024 using a VPN

The 2024 Tour de France is officially underway for the 111th time, and the competition is starting to heat up. We've compiled everything you need to know about how to watch the Tour de France, including global free streaming options.

The race kicked off this year in Italy, but the riders are now cycling through France, with more than a third of the competition officially completed. The race consists of 21 stages spread across 23 days, with each leg of the competition bringing its own set of challenges. The rider with the shortest combined times will be crowned victor in Nice, France, on July 21.

Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar, who won the Tour de France in 2020 and 2021, currently leads the race. He's on a hot streak following a May first-place victory at the Giro d'Italia (the first of the three annual Grand Tour races). Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard, who won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 but suffered a major crash earlier this year, is currently ranking third, trailing behind Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel.

After taking a backseat to the sprinters on a wet and rainy stage 8, the Tour de France continues on Sunday with the gravel-packed stage 9 . As the cliche says, a rider can't win the Tour on a stage like that, but they can just lose it.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) continues to be atop the Tour de France GC standings after stage 8 won by Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty).  Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quickstep) is second, and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease A Bike) is third.

The first week of the Tour de France will conclude with stage 9 held along the white gravel roads, which are already emblematic features of Strade Bianche and Paris-Tours and a new addition to la Grande Boucle.

“You need to be even more sharp, even more focused than today. And you need to be careful in each gravel sector,” Pogačar said after stage 8 .

The peloton will tackle a 199km loop starting and ending in Troyes and will feature 14 white gravel road sectors, including six in the final 35 kilometres. The riders will exit the final sector, the 3km-long Chemin de Saint-Parres-aux-Tertres, inside of 10km to go in the stage. In total, the peloton will race 32km of white roads with each sector pitching the riders onto the gravel and into the dust. This stage is sure to be a don't-miss!

Stage 19 was the last chance saloon for those riders who were neither pure climbers or lighting fast sprinters, so pretty much 90% of the peloton . A constantly rolling but not savage stage between Moirans-en-Montagne and Poligny would be the venue for someone to prevail and take a prized stage win before the final weekend. 

Naturally competition was fierce to make it into the break with countless attacks launched before 36 hardy riders made it clear with just 65 kilometres left to race. It was always expected the decisive point of the course would be the final climb, the Cote d’Ivory and thus is was as the group exploded leaving three riders up front Kasper Asgreen (Soudal Quick-Step), Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroen) and Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious).

As hard as the fractured bunch behind tried they could not close the gap to the front three who arrived at the finish to fight between them. Asgreen, the winner the previous day was favourite but it was the determined Slovenian Mohoric who took the win with a final lurch to the line to take it by the width of a tyre. This was the third stage win for Bahrain Victorious and the third to be emotionally dedicated to their former rider Gino Mader who tragically died at the Tour de Swiss. 

Stage 20 had been designed so the battle for yellow could go right down to the wire, to be decided on the very last climb of the race. Unfortunately though that battle was over but there were still plenty of other battles further down the classification that were to be fought for and it did indeed turn into a classic stage of aggressive racing. 

The first contest to be settled was that for the polka dot Jersey. In the lead was Giulio Ciccone but up to four other riders could have taken his crown. In the end he triumphed sealing victory by taking maximum points on top of the Col de la Schlucht to become the first Italian since 1992 to win the climbers classification. 

On the next climb, from the break containing Ciccone a smaller group including Tom Pidcock and Thibault Pinot broke clear with Pinot then attacking alone. On his home roads and with tens of thousands of rampant French fans screaming his name he went solo in search of the stage win. Could it be? Would the fairytale come true in his last Tour? Alas no. He did enjoy one final hurrah but it was the favourites who caught the break and now recovered from a couple of bad days Pogacar bagged the win to salvage his race. 

The final stage of the Tour is half procession and half eyeballs out racing up and down the cobbles of the Champs Elysée. What starts with photo opportunities and glasses of champagne ends with the most highly prized sprint stage in front of the thousands that line the route. Hitting the famous boulevard the peloton as is tradition was all together but not for long as the irrepressible Tadej Pogacar decided to shake things up and go out on the attack. 

Could he defy the might of the peloton and take the unlikeliest of victories? Also no, and he wasn’t the last to try and audacious attack before everything came back to gather for a final mass gallop to the line. All eyes were on Jasper Phillipsen, this year’s sprint king but just as it looked like he had got it, across surged Jordi Meeus (Bora-Hansgrohe) to take his first ever stage win, and what a stage to do it on. 

Yellow jersey wearer Jonas Vingegaard crossed the line a few seconds later flanked by his whole team, his second victory in two years confirmed, which in the end was a very comfortable one and looks likely to be the foundation of a period of total dominance.

The cycling world has congratulated sprinter Mark Cavendish on his record 35th Tour de France stage win. 

The man they call the "Manx Missile" was too quick for his rivals at the end of stage five, with his victory breaking the record he had shared with Eddy Merckx.

The 39-year-old Cavendish says he will continue trying to win stages to add to his record.

Mark Cavendish says he will not stop hunting for more Tour de France stage wins after finally breaking the record he shared with Belgian great Eddy Merckx on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old sprint king blew away his rivals in the fifth stage of this year's race, his legs pumping him to the front of the bunch before he roared over the line with arms aloft at the end of a 177 kilometre ride to Saint-Vulbas.

Cavendish had been stuck on 34 Tour de France stage wins since 2021 after not being selected in 2022 and then crashing out of the race last year after narrowly failing to break the record in Bordeaux because of a mechanical problem.

But the Astana-Qazaqtsan rider's decision to postpone his retirement was fully vindicated as he underlined his standing as one of Britain's greatest sportsmen.

Former teammate Geraint Thomas was one of the first to congratulate Cavendish, known as the "Manx Missile" for his native Isle of Man.

"It's unbelievable, I am super happy for him. It is great he has the record alone and is not sharing it with anyone," former Tour de France winner Thomas said.

"I said to him, 'mate, if you win this stage just drop your bike and walk away' — but he was like, 'If I win the first one, I'll want to win more'.

"So he's definitely going to hang around, isn't he."

Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme added: "Everyone has a smile today, even Eddy Merckx!"

Back to business after celebrations, Cavendish says

Once the dust had settled on his record-breaking feat, Cavendish, who was watched by his wife Petra and children, said it would be back to business as usual.

"First and foremost I'm trying to enjoy it and secondly try to be successful again because that's fundamentally our job and I love this race," he told reporters.

"I always have loved this race. I love this race when I ride, I love this race when I watch it and I'll always give it 100 per cent so we'll continue to do that and we'll continue to try and win bunch sprints."

It was the 165th career victory for Cavendish and his win came 16 years after his first Tour de France stage win in 2008 — an astonishing time span in a brutal sport.

"Mark's long and storied career, his passion for the sport and his tenacious pursuit for excellence make him a real inspiration for the next generation of bike riders looking to follow in his footsteps," British Cycling's performance director Stephen Park said on Wednesday.

"He is one of our country's truly great sportsmen and sporting personalities, and it has been a privilege to have watched him reign supreme for all these years."

According to Cavendish's first cycling coach back in his native Isle of Man, he was always destined for greatness.

"When I began coaching Mark as a young boy, I always knew he would go on to achieve amazing things," 74-year-old Dot Tilbury said. 

"After this victory there can be no doubt that he is the greatest sprinter of all time."

Tour de France standings: Race outlook after Stage 9

The 2024 Tour de France nears its midway point after Sunday's Stage 9, and Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar continues to establish his lead.

Pogačar will still wear the yellow jersey on Tuesday for Stage 10 following the riders' day off on Monday, though it was Frenchman Anthony Turgis who won the day on Sunday. Turgis crossed the line in Troyes at 04:19:43 at the head of a leading group to win the race's gravel stage.

Eritrean rider and Stage 8 winner Biniam Girmay also maintained his lead in the points classification for a fifth straight day.
