Before we dive into the best nail polish removers available, there are a few important things to be aware of to help you choose the right one for you.

There are two main types of nail polish removers: those that use acetone and those that don’t.

Acetone Nail Polish Removers

If you’re on a tight budget and just want the nail polish removed as fast as possible, this is the most common option. Nail polish removers with acetone use it to strip away the old nail polish quickly and thoroughly. It is excellent for removing acrylic nails, dark polish, or glitter polish.

The problem is that it dries the nails out, removing their natural oils. While effective, if you plan on using nail polish removers often, avoid using an acetone remover as frequently; twice a month should be fine. Like with any chemical that is used often, it can cause damage, and in this case it means rendering your nails brittle, even causing them to peel or split.

Look for acetone nail polish removers that have hydrating formulas, which keep your nails well-nourished. For more straight-forward acetone removers, make sure to keep your hands moisturized so they won’t dry out during the process. This can be easily done by using cuticle oil and vitamin E.

Acetone-Free Nail Polish Removers

There are typically no harsh ingredients in this type of nail polish remover. Acetone-free removers are perfect for removing nail polish off of acrylic nails, or any other false nails. Of course, it also works on natural nails since it doesn’t dry out the skin.

It uses some of the compounds used in acetone removers but it contains oils that keep the nails nourished. However, removing nail colors can take much longer than it does with an acetone-based remover.

You will encounter five main types of nail polish removers on our list.

Bottled Liquid

This is most common way in which you will commonly see nail polish removers sold in stores. You can choose acetone or acetone-free bottled nail polish removers. Some of these liquids can be soaked into cotton pads or cotton balls, which you then apply to your nails.

Remover Pads

These are individual pads that come pre-soaked in acetone or acetone-free formulas. They can remove two coats of nail polish in no time and they are easy to carry around.

Remover Sponges

Similar to pads, these sponges are pre-soaked with acetone or acetone-free formulas. All you have to do is insert your fingers or toes and twist them around on the sponge until there is no more nail polish.

Corrector Pen

Much like using a corrector pen when writing, these thin companions are easy to transport and elegant to use, especially if you often apply nail polish. They are ideal for removing excess nail polish that deposits on your cuticles.

Instant Nail Remover Pot

This is another type of remover that works fast and is travel-friendly. They work like a magician’s hat trick: you put in a finger with nail polish and you take it out without!

Since this removing ritual is a necessity in your beauty process, we scoured the internet to find the best nail polish removers that you can spoil your nails with. These are all reliable removers that will cause minimal damage to your nails, if used correctly.

Zoya 3-in-1 Remove Plus

Editor’s Rating:

Best Used for Removing: Stubborn glitter, surface oils from clean nails

Ingredients

This Best of Beauty Award-winning nail polish remover does not use acetone. However, due to its formulation with glycerin, it acts as a very effective remover. Its non-drying formula will leave your hands nourished and it will make your next nail polish application last longer. While removing the nail polish, this remover won’t leave any staining or streaking behind.

The Zoya 3-in-1 by Remove Plus comes as a bottled nail polish remover. But it doesn’t stop at that. It also preps and conditions your nails, so you won’t need any other beauty appliances when removing nail polish. It manages to moisturize, nourish, and fortify your nail plate so you can already prepare your nails for the next manicure as you are removing your current one.

Size and Packaging

This nail polish remover comes as an 8-ounce bottle, which means it is portable, though not to bring in your carry-on luggage. The TSA prevents containers bigger than 3.4 ounces to be brought with you on a plane.

The bottle is completely spill-proof. Not only is this quality provided by the twist lock, but its flipper pump just requires you to push the cotton pad on the dispenser. This operation only requires one-hand, so the whole process is effortless.

Because it doesn’t use acetone, the smell shouldn’t have been a worry in the first place. The company even went a step further and infused a lavender-like smell. Not only does it take a minimal amount of effort to apply this remover, but it also smells pretty during the process.

This nail polish remover is priced fairly, especially for what it offers. Since it is also a conditioner and a nail prepper, these are products that you would’ve paid for separately. The spill-proof bottle alone is worth the money.

  • Spill-proof bottle
  • Easy to use with one hand
  • Acetone-free yet very effective
  • Lavender scent smell
  • A bit pricey, especially for the quantity
  • Harsher than other acetone-free removers

Cutex Ultra-Powerful Nail Polish Remover

Best Used for Removing: Regular, dark, and glitter nail polish, including gel

The formula of the Cutext Ultra-Powerful Nail Polish Remover is mostly based on acetone. It also contains apricot seed oil which is good for moisturizing the nails. Although it’s tough on the nails, it doesn’t leave that thin chalky layer on your fingers that many removers do after you use them.

This nail polish remover comes sold in a bottle. You won’t have to use more than 2 cotton pads to remove the polish off all 10 nails.

The size of this nail polish remover bottle is 6.7 ounces. The shape of the bottle is cute, like a teardrop with a lid. Make sure you don’t tip the bottle over if it’s open, as the mouth of the bottle is wide enough to spill much of the product.

The scent of this remover is a big draw. Not only does it not smell like acetone in the slightest bit, but it has a refreshing cucumber fragrance to make the experience pleasant.

This is the cheapest nail polish remover on our list. It is priced well under the $5 mark and the size of the bottle is pretty impressive for this value.

  • Removes all kinds of nail polish
  • Smells great
  • Tough on the nails
  • Takes more effort to work on gel polish

Ella+Mila Soy Nail Polish Remover

Best Used for Removing: All conventional nail polishes

This nail polish remover contains absolutely no trace of acetone or any harsh acetates. It is made up of soy and lavender essential oil, and contains plenty of A, C, and E vitamins to keep your nails super nourished and healthy. The formula is safe around children and pregnant women, as it doesn’t contain acetone, formaldehyde, toluene, and other harmful chemicals that polish removers usually contain. We can’t stress enough on how non-toxic this remover is, but it is worth also mentioning that it’s PETA-certified.

It comes sold in a bottle, and it is easy and quick to use. Just go over all 10 nails at once, leaving the formula to absorb the polish for around 20 seconds. This way, the polish easily comes off without you having to scrub your nail beds.

The bottle only weighs 4 ounces. While the packaging is a cute pink color, it doesn’t come with a dispenser pump. Since the formula is somewhat oily, make sure your fingers and nails are not wet when holding the bottle.

Since the formula also contains lavender oils, the odor is also lavender-scented. It has no trace of chemical smell whatsoever.

This remover is relatively modestly-priced. Although the container is pretty small, for a vegan product, the price is more than fair.

  • 100% non-toxic and vegan
  • Animal cruelty-free
  • Contains vitamins A, C, and E
  • Made in the USA
  • Not suitable for gel polish
  • Small quantity

Mineral Fusion Nail Polish Remover

Best Used for Removing: Regular nail polish and even dark shades of polish

This is an acetone-free nail polish remover. Aside from acetone, it also doesn’t use paraben, gluten, phthalate, formaldehyde, or talc. One important ingredient is the plant-based moisturizer that softens and adds shine to your nails.

The Mineral Fusion Nail Polish Remover comes in the form of a bottle. It doesn’t come with a pump dispenser so be careful not to use too much, because unless it’s by accident, you won’t have to. If your favorite deep plum shade normally requires 2 cotton balls to remove, you will only need one when using this remover. However, removing heavy glitter polishes will require a bit more effort.

The sole size of the bottle is 6 ounces. The base of the bottle is not very wide, so keep the plastic container out of the heat.

One of the main attractions of the Mineral Fusion Nail Polish Remover is its fragrance. The company went for a fruity mango, to add freshness to your nostrils while you’re scrubbing away.

While this product is a bit higher-priced than some other nail polish options, the cruelty-free, great-smelling, and acetone-free formula is more than worth it.

  • Acetone-free
  • Smells like mango
  • Can make your hands feel greasy, due to the moisturizer
  • Glitter will require some extra work
  • Mango scent may not be for everyone
  • Higher price

O.P.I. Expert Touch Lacquer Remover

Best Used for Removing: Darkest shades and glitter polish

This nail polish remover uses acetone, though it is also available as an acetone-free remover. Even though it is strong, the formula is moisturizing enough to leave your cuticles soft and smooth. This is thanks to the aloe, grape seed oil, and kelp which are included in the formula.

The OPI Expert Touch is sold in bottle. You only have to apply a little liquid on a cotton pad, swipe it on your nails, and the polish comes off in a few seconds.

The remover is sold in bottles of different quantities. You can also opt for acetone-free versions, which also come in different quantities. You can choose from the petite and travel-friendly 1 ounce bottle, the not-quite TSA-approved 3.7 bottle, and the bigger 15 ounce bottle. The packaging doesn’t stand out, but the color of the remover itself is nice.

As expected, this remover does have a slight acetone scent, but it isn’t as pungent as other removers. In fact it almost has a hint of fruity freshness.

The price is one of the main draws of this nail polish remover. Paying virtually nothing for a respectable salon brand product is quite the bargain. Each quantity version is priced accordingly, and it is effective enough to not require using too much per application.

  • Available in 3 different quantities, including the TSA-approved 1 ounce bottle
  • Works quick and efficiently
  • Available in both acetone and non-acetone versions
  • Aloe, grape seed oil, and kelp leave your nails hydrated
  • Has that specific acetone smell
  • Gel polish requires soaking
  • A bit harsh on the nails

Karma Naturals Organic Nail Polish Remover Wipes

Best Used for Removing: Regular and dark nail polish

This product is 100% acetone-free and also contains vitamin E, soybean oil, and lavender oil. These are optimal if you have brittle nails and sensitive skin.

Although Karma Naturals has different nail polish removers, each offering something slightly different, we like the ease of the wipe format. You won’t need cotton pads when you have these pre-soaked wipes, which will leave no mess regardless of where you use them.

With your purchase, you will get 10 wipes from Karma Naturals. Each wipe is individually packed in a cute pink packaging, and they are ready to use once you rip the wrapper. The wipe will feel dry at first, but once you start applying it on your nails, it will neatly remove the polish. You only need one wipe for all 10 fingernails or toenails.

These nail polish remover pads have a pleasant lavender smell. If you’ll smell them up closely, they even have a hint of mint and rosemary.

The Karma Naturals Organic Nail Polish Remover Wipes come at a great value. What you get is 10 removing sessions, each for just over a dollar. In addition to that, the ingredients found in the wipes also condition your nails, so you get a bit more than just a nail polish remover.

  • Travel-friendly
  • Contains oils that replenish your nails
  • Pleasant lavender smell
  • Not suitable for gel nail polish or acrylics

Sally Hansen Nail Polish Remover

Best Used for Removing: Regular, dark, and glitter polishes

This nail polish remover uses acetone in its formula. Its blend of wheat protein and vitamins is combined with a nail strengthening gelatin that softens your cuticles and fortifies your nails without drying them.

The Sally Hansen Nail Polish Remover comes sold in a bottle. The content is very effective and will last you a long time, so you don’t have to use too much product at once.

The 8-ounce bottle is large enough for you not to worry about how soon you’ll have to purchase a nail polish remover again. The shape of the bottle is pretty cute, but the mouth is pretty large so be careful not to tip the bottle over and spill all of its contents.

Although it is an acetone nail polish remover, it does not have that specific chemical scent. In fact it has a mild Camay soap fragrance.

Perhaps a bigger draw than the effectiveness of this remover is its super affordable price. Not only is it under $5, but the bottle size exceeds that of most other bottles on our list.

  • Removes nail polish quickly
  • Strengthens weak and brittle nails
  • Contains vitamins and protein
  • No tingling or burning sensation.
  • Wide-open mouth causes wastage of product
  • Might require using moisturizing cream, due to acetone concentration

Cutex Advanced Revival Nail Polish Remover Pads

Best Used for Removing: Regular polish on-the-go, including on fake nails

Acetone is used in the Cutex Advanced Revival Nail Polish Remover pads. Mixed with oils like apricot seed, flax seed and parrilla, your nails won’t dry out and won’t feel stripped.

As the name suggests, this nail polish remover is sold in the form of pads. This makes it very convenient to use anywhere from waiting at a stoplight to walking your dog in the park. You don’t need to use cotton balls or worry about spilling a remover bottle, although the Cutex Advanced Revival Nail Polish Remover is also sold in the form of a bottle, if that’s your preference.

Each container comes with 3 individually wrapped pads. You only need one pad for all 10 nails, as their felt material is thick and they are soaked with enough remover solution for a session. Still, 3 pads is a very small amount, meaning this product only works for 3 nail polish removal sessions.

You don’t have to worry about a strong smell, as not much is released from the Cutex Advanced Revival Nail Polish Remover pads. It does have a hint of acetone but nowhere near an amount that can make it unbearable, and you’d have to be really close to the pad to smell it.

For 3 pads, this might not be a viable budget solution if you are looking to buy something to last you the whole year. They work great, so if they offer you more comfort than using a bottle remover, it’s worth the money. You pay for the on-the-go comfort, but after three sessions, you’ll need to repurchase.

  • One pad removes nail polish from all 10 fingers or toes
  • Formula strengthens nails during use
  • Won’t spill
  • Pricey for only 3 pads
  • Be quick when using since the pads dry out fast

LondonTown Kur Strengthening Lacquer Remover

This product does not use acetone or gluten. It is non-toxic, and even vegan. It features vitamins and mineral extracts that hydrate and strengthen your nails and cuticles after usage.

The Londontown Kur Strengthening Lacquer Remover is sold as a bottle. Normally, it is part of a 5-step nail treatment set, but it is also sold separately.

This elegant and classy-looking bottle only weighs 4 ounces, but it doesn’t take much to remove nail polish. You can even finish the job with 6 cotton balls in total!

This product is free from that poison-like acetone smell, but it does have a faint odor that may not be for everyone. It’s not unpleasant, but you shouldn’t expose your nostrils to it more than you have to.

Although it is effective, this is quite an investment for a bottle of only 4 ounces. But you will feel the difference between other polish removers, so you are also paying for comfort and peace of mind.

  • Vegan, non-toxic
  • Very effective and not rough on the nails
  • Small bottle

Deborah Lippmann Nail Polish Remover

Best Used for Removing: Light, dark, and glitter nail polish on-the-go

The Stripper uses acetone in its formula. But it doesn’t leave your hands dry and cracked like many acetone-based removers do. The formula also includes aloe vera, glycerin, lavender essential oil, and other botanicals to revitalize and condition the nails and cuticles.

This nail polish remover by celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann comes in bottle-form. Once you soak a cotton pad with the remover and leave it on your finger for 5 seconds, the polish can be gently and completely removed from your nail. This remover can also be purchased in the form of finger mitts, which have the same formula and effect.

The Stripper comes in a 4 ounce bottle, or as 10 small mitts which you can carry in your purse anywhere you go. The bottle is just a little over the TSA limit for liquids you can carry on board but it is very convenient to use. It has a dispenser pump on top, which only releases how much liquid you need per application.

Due to the lavender oil within the formula, this nail polish remover has a lavender smell, resembling that of a laundry detergent. Acetone-based removers usually have a strong chemical smell, so it is a big plus that this one actually has a pleasant one.

This is a high-end product and it is priced accordingly. The results it offers are also high-end, as it is merciless on polish residue yet doesn’t leave your fingers stripped. It is one of the fastest-working removers, so you also pay for the time you save by using it.

  • Pleasant smell, despite containing acetone
  • Aloe vera prevents dryness
  • Works fast on any type of polish
  • Pump dispenser is a bit faulty

A Guide to Buying the Best Nail Polish Remover

woman smiling while removing nail polish

Now you have a grasp on what differentiates good nail polish removers from inferior ones. Let’s delve into more detail about what sets the good ones apart from the rest, as well as from each other.

There are labs filled with scientists whose sole activity is developing nail polish removers that work for you. A remover dissolves the hard nail polish coating off your nails into a liquid that can be easily wiped off. Since this process can leave your nails brittle or cause them to split, beauty scientists mix different amounts of certain solvents to find the right mix, so that the removing process won’t seem like such a chore anymore.

The perfect mix contains just enough chemical solvents to be time- and effort-effective, and enough healthy ingredients to restore the nails’ health. Smell is also a factor that beauty product brands take into consideration. The more acetone a nail polish remover uses, the more it will smell like there was an accident in Dexter’s lab.

It can be difficult to decide between a nail polish remover that contains acetone and one that steers clear of this harsh-yet-effective ingredient. Luckily, we help make the decision as simple as possible by telling you everything you need to know.

Most powerful and fast-acting nail polish removers use acetone. The way acetone works is by breaking the nail varnish apart. The polish is stripped from the nail plate surface so it comes off completely.

Because of its effectiveness, it is harsh on the nails because it strips them from the natural oils of the skin. Using too much acetone can lead to your skin looking pale or white, because it has dried out. Make sure you use a nail polish remover that also includes other ingredients meant to revitalize your nails and cuticles, like all the ones on our list.

If you love dark nail polish or glittery models, you will spend much less time removing them if you use an acetone-based remover. In fact, acetone is even used as a house or car cleaning item. Some of the popular uses for acetone include:

  • Removing window tint, paint, and glue
  • Cleaning tools
  • Dissolving superglue
  • Cleaning stains off dishes
  • Removing ink stains or permanent marker
  • Removing stubborn stickers from metal or glass
  • Sanitizing your keyboard, phone, or other surfaces that are prone to gather bacteria

Bearing these additional acetone uses in mind, women that already have dry or splitting nails should opt for non-acetone removers, even if the process will last even longer. For women that have no problem using it, it is important to always moisturize the hands after using an acetone-based nail polish remover.

Acetone-Free

There are good nail polish removers on the market that don’t use acetone in their formula. Some removers try to make up in effectiveness, like the Zoya 3-in-1 by Remove Plus , which uses glycerin. Others have non-toxic formulas like the Ella+Mila Soy Nail Polish Remover which is even vegan.

The downside to acetone-free removers is that it takes much longer to dissolve the nail polish, especially if you have dark or glittery polish. Since it takes a longer time to remove the polish, the skin and cuticles are exposed to these solvents for a longer time, which affects them.

You won’t have to worry about the acetone smell, though. Some non-acetone removers like the Mineral Fusion Nail Polish Remover have distinct pleasant fragrances, such as mango.

The best nail polish removers also rely on other ingredients that moisturize, prep, or condition the nails so that they stay hydrated and don’t dry out. The most popular other ingredients used are oils and vitamins.

You can find lavender, apricot seed, grape seed, flax seed, and parrilla oils in both acetone and acetone-free nail polish removers. These help the nails recover the natural oils they lose during the removing process.

Commonly used vitamins are A, C, and E, which help to revitalize the nails and not make them feel stripped. If you use nail polish removers that don’t contain any vitamins, consider purchasing separate moisturizers or nail conditioners to keep them nourished.

Not all nail polish removers are sold in bottles. You can find dependable pads such as the Cutex Advanced Revival Nail Polish Remover Pads or wipes, like the Karma Naturals Organic Nail Polish Remover Wipes . These dry removers are travel-friendly and you usually only need one to remove the polish off all 10 fingernails or toenails. Also, they usually don’t stink up the room, because you have to press them on the nail to extract the remover liquid, so they’ll only smell a bit after the solution is on.

Other formats nail polish removers come in are pots, like the Nails Inc. Express Nail Polish Remover Pot , or sponges, like the Pretty Nails Regular Nail Polish Remover . Although they contain acetone, these are less effective because they don’t require scrubbing or wiping. This means that there will still be some nail polish residue left around the cuticles, which will imply purchasing a nail corrector pen. Added up, this will be a longer and more expensive process.

The size of containers is important based on the circumstances you will use the nail polish remover in. If you know you’ll only be doing this ritual at home, you can go for larger sizes, like the 15 ounce bottle that OPI Expert Touch Lacquer Remover offers as an option. You can get the same remover from OPI as a small TSA-approved 1 ounce bottle if you just need it for a few days while you’re traveling away from home.

Pear-shaped containers that have a larger base are better for not tipping over. Some containers, like Zoya 3-in-1 by Remove Plus , even come with a pump dispenser that makes it spill-proof.

Another disadvantage of using acetone on anything is the chemical smell. Some companies developed removers that use acetone but don’t smell like it, such as the The Stripper by Deborah Lippmann or Sally Hansen’s Nail Polish Remover , which smell like soap or lavender (due to the use of the hydrating lavender oil). Although it is not pleasant to use, scientists say it isn’t hazardous . The most that can happen if you accidentally inhale too much is getting a cough or a sore throat.

What Is the Difference Between Using Pure Acetone and a Nail Polish Remover?

Acetone is only one of the ingredients used in some types of nail polish removers. The best ones have a formula that also includes other ingredients that make up for the damage the acetone causes the nail. Some nail polish removers don’t use acetone, but instead they have other milder solvents that aren’t as harsh on the nails. Some of these solvents are propylene carbonate, isopropyl alcohol, and ethyl acetate.

How Damaging Is Nail Polish Remover to Your Nails?

Acetone-based nail polish remover can dry your nails out, which eventually causes splitting, peeling, and even nail breakage. Watch out for nail polish removers designed specifically for gel nails, as they usually contain acetone exclusively, due to how strong the gel is. To further help your nails regenerate their natural oils and vitamins, opt for removers that use these ingredients in their formula, or consider purchasing separate nail moisturizers and conditioners.

How Do You Use Nail Polish Remover From a Bottle?

First, use a cotton ball and dab a little remover over each nail. Use another cotton ball to wipe the nails clean, and more remover if needed.

If you use gel nail polish, you have to soak each nail in pure acetone individually. You can place foil wraps or clips over your fingers and let the acetone do its trick while they’re on. If you use pads or wipes, you only have to press one wipe (or more if they dry out too fast) over each nail, and rub away until the polish starts to come off. For a more detailed look into how to use nail polish removers , let this video be of further guidance.

Which nail polish is best comes down to what works for you, depending on the type of nail polish you use, how comfortable you are with harsh chemicals, and the health of your nails. Carefully consider all the information in this guide, and use it to find the one that will work best for you and your needs.

The right polish can make removing nail polish almost as enjoyable as applying it. After all, when you have clean, strong, healthy nails, it means you’re ready for your next stylish manicure!

Why Acquarella Travel Remover and not conventional?

Because, oil and water don’t mix. Conventional removers use oils and emollients to compensate for the extreme drying of Acetone or other solvents. Those same oils and emollients hinder the binding properties of our nail polish.  Our new soy based formula will remove BOTH conventional and Acquarella nail polishes, and rinse clean with water for better adhesion.

This smaller size is perfect for taking Acquarella on the go. It is enough remover to do many sets of polish changes yet small enough to be TSA compliant when you fly.

What Acquarella Remover does NOT contain:

  • Acetone, Acetonitrile, Methyl Acetate or other petrochemical solvents!
  • Oils, Emollients or Humectants (e.g. Lanolin, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, etc)
  • Gluten, Camphor, or Fragrances
  • Nothing to dry or crack nails or cuticles from use
  • Free of animal products - Vegan

Our Remover works differently

Acquarella Remover is a plant based remover that works just a little different than strong solvents to remove Acquarella and conventional nail products. Given our system of products is designed to work together, we put the following information together to help you get the most out of using the Remover.

Instructions and FAQ

This doesn't work like I'm used to - How can I make this easier? First, do not kill yourself scrubbing – there is a better way! Acquarella Nail Polish Remover is different in how it removes the nail polish. It breaks the polymer cross-linking of the nail polish film. Working with the Remover is even easier with our new formula. The following is best practice on removal with some recommendations using Acquarella Remover with our Nail Polish or Conditioner that greatly help the process:

  • Use cotton rounds/pads only , not balls or rope.
  • Pre-apply Remover to all nails with the round/pad and allow the Remover to “soak in” to the polish surface for at least a minute, rubbing occasionally. Additionally, you can pre-apply in combination with your bath or shower for greater efficacy.
  • With the Remover already working, use the pad to remove a majority of the nail polish alternating nails occasionally. Do not rub all the polish off one nail at one time.
  • When a majority of nail polish is off the nail, using an orange stick put focused pressure on stubborn polish while under running water to assist removal. For toes, doing this in the shower or at the end of a bath will achieve the same effect. The focused pressure with water being present helps the film absorb, expand and deteriorate for easier removal.
  • Remove polish after your bath or shower – Acquarella polish does absorb water and the warmer it is, the better the absorption will loosen the polish structure.
  • Use the orange stick from the Buffer Kit on a pad (with some Acquarella Remover, not soaking) to apply direct and concentrated pressure on nail around cuticles, edges with the pad providing Remover to assist.

Always rinse hands and feet after use to remove Acquarella Remover residue. While rinsing with warm, clean water only you may even hear them “squeak” when rubbing. Assuming you started with clean hands, there is no need to further wash with other soaps, etc. as they may “coat” the nails with something incompatible with an application of Acquarella Nail Polish. Your goal is “squeaky clean” and dried nails. Any further tips, tricks or hints – feel free to contact us and we can help your specific situation.

Is it harder to remove Acquarella nail polish the longer I wear it? Absolutely. The polish becomes more cross-linked the longer you wear the polish, which makes it even more difficult to remove weeks down the road. In these cases, we highly recommend our “faster removal” suggestions above to assist with stubborn polish.

Can conventional nail polish remover be used to remove Acquarella Nail Polish? Well, it can but that defeats the whole reason you are using Acquarella! With our new soy based remover that can remove both water based and conventional nail polishes, there's no reason to use any old fashioned removers with fumes or nasty odors. Most, if not all other conventional removers, still have petrochemical solvents, oils and other emollients that are incompatible with our products and will hinder adhesion of our polish. Remember, oil and water don’t mix.

How do I clean up spills of Acquarella Nail Polish with your Remover? Stay calm - the main focus is in keeping the polish from drying by saturating the spill with water, then blotting the affected area for removal. Remover is actually a last-step effort for a spill that has been caught in time for better absorbency of colorant. Remember, when it dries, removal is orders of magnitude more difficult and will require use of our Remover or more volatile solvents.  Be advised, our new formulation may damage plastics and other surfaces.  Use caution and test on small areas to determine suitability in removal.

My Buying Guides on ‘Travel Size Fingernail Polish Remover’

What to Look for in a Travel Size Fingernail Polish Remover

When it comes to choosing a travel size fingernail polish remover, there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

  • Size: The most important factor to consider is the size of the bottle. You want something that is small enough to fit in your carry-on bag, but big enough to contain enough remover for multiple uses.
  • Formula: The formula of the remover is also important. You want something that is effective at removing polish, but is also gentle on your nails.
  • Fragrance: Some travel size nail polish removers are scented, while others are unscented. Choose a fragrance that you like and that won’t bother you if you have to use it multiple times a day.
  • Price: Travel size nail polish removers can range in price from a few dollars to over $10. Choose a remover that fits your budget.

The Best Non-Acetone Nail Polish Removers, According to Nail Experts

Woman Taking Care Of Her Nails

If you’ve ever worn nail polish, you’re familiar with the scent of acetone (a chemical solvent that gives off some unmistakable fumes). It’s long been the standard for dissolving nail polish because it’s so fast-acting and effective. Audrey Siu, the founder of vegan and nine-free nail polish line Veque — “nine-free” meaning that it’s missing nine common nail polish toxins, like formaldehyde — says “even contractors who tile bathrooms with grout or epoxy need it sometimes to remove a bit of the mess.” You can imagine that it has its drawbacks; it’s harsh and drying on skin and nails; Siu even says it caused her skin to peel.

Now that more brands are avoiding acetone and creating essential oil - and soy-based nail polish removers instead (New York’s Tenoverten just began selling a soy-based rose nail polish remover at Target), we polled five different nail experts, from nail polish founders to the owners of non-toxic nail salons in the city, on the acetone-free removers that they swear by.

Nail-polish remover solutions

Priti Non-Toxic Soy Nail Polish Remover

Among the experts we polled, soy nail polish removers tended to be the favorite. They work in similar ways to acetone, containing mixtures of light, non-greasy oils that act as a solvent to dissolve color from your nails. They don’t work as fast (you sometimes have to let the oils sit for a minute or so before rubbing), but because they’re oil-based, they offer more hydration. Jane MacColla, founder of Lower East Side non-toxic nail salon Hortus Nailworks , recommends this one. “We love it because it’s non-drying, super effective in removing polish, and biodegradable.” She does advise that people wash their hands and nails thoroughly to remove all oils and residue before applying polish, and adds that soy-based removers cannot remove gel polish.

Editor’s Note : If you’re not into the lemongrass scent, Priti NYC also sells an unscented version .

Ella+Mila Soy Nail Polish Remover

Mabelyn Martin , the creative director at Paintbox , loves this soy nail polish remover from Ella + Mia. “The lavender scent smells lovely, and the essential oils keep nails hydrated while you remove your color,” she says. It’s also relatively inexpensive and contains a cocktail of vitamins A, C, and E to strengthen nails.

Karma Naturals Nail Polish Remover with Soybean Oil and Lavender

Boerum Hill nail lounge Ruchki da Nozhki uses a nail polish remover called Karma Organic for customers who are allergic or sensitive to acetone. Owner Katya Kan likes the pleasant lavender scent of this kind (though it does come unscented , too) and she says a little goes a long way. “It only takes one well-soaked cotton ball to remove polish from all ten nails.”

tenoverten The Rose Soak Non-Acetone Polish Remover

This is the Tenoverten nail polish remover that you can easily buy at Target (it’s the liquid version of the wipes below). This one’s essential oil-based, and has a pleasant rose scent. We’ve tried it ourselves and were blown away by how well this one worked — it removes polish in a matter of seconds, and feels very gentle on nails and cuticles — but be careful with cleaning up the oil residue on the bottle when you sit it down on surfaces. It can leach varnish from tabletops, which we discovered a tad too late.

Nail polish remover wipes

côte Takeoff Towels (Set of 8)

A more travel-friendly alternative to a bottle of remover is a single-use wipe. Chillhouse stocks these towelettes from 10-free nail brand côte, because they’re far and away the favorite of founder Cyndi Ramirez , who likes the citrusy scent of the blood orange essential oils in them. “They smell like oranges and offer a very gentle, moisturizing, and non-drying removal. Literally one of the best nail care products in the game and super easy to carry around with you for those moments where you’re in a pinch.”

Tenoverten Rose Polish Remover + Hand Cleanser Cloths

Jess Hannah Revesz, founder of  J. Hannah , likes these wipes from Tenoverten. “These wipes are easy to travel with and have an amazing rose scent. The remover uses essential oils and natural plant extracts to remove polish.” It comes with a cleansing cloth for removing the oil residue from your hands and moisturizing, which Revesz recommends finishing off with.

Why Trust Byrdie

Byrdie / Kevin Liang

Nail polish remover is an essential part of every DIY manicurist's kit. In addition to eliminating all traces of lacquer, it can prep the nails for fresh paint, create a clean line for French tips , and tidy up around the edges. "The main ingredients in nail polish remover are acetone, isopropyl alcohol, or ethyl acetate," says nail artist Syreeta Aaron . These powerful solvents dissolve the polymers found in nail lacquer. "The polish breaks down, changing the hardened polish into a liquid form for easy wipe-off," she adds.

Of course, not all formulas are created equal. Acetone tends to be the quickest and most effective, though it can be pretty harsh on your nail beds with continued use. There are acetone-free removers that are a bit gentler on nails and still get the job done, which you'll also find on this list. To uncover top-tier options, we conducted hours of research on the best nail polish removers, evaluating each formula on its key ingredients and how well they work to remove all traces of polish. We also considered how easy the product is to dispense, as well as other factors, like if a formula has extra benefits for your nails, nail beds , and cuticles . The following are the best in show.

Best Overall

Zoya remove+ nail polish remover.

Spill-proof container

Award-winning formula

Strong smell

Key Ingredients: Acetone, glycerin | Amount: 8 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Our number one pick is Zoya Remove+. This nail polish remover gets rid of any shade of lacquer, dark or light, opaque or glittery . (Note: the main ingredient is 2-propanone, the chemical name for acetone). It also works as a pre-polish nail prepper, dissolving oily residues and leaving you with a clean canvas. But that's not all. The three-in-one formula contains glycerin to hydrate and condition your nail beds, cuticles, and the surrounding skin. We also appreciate the user-friendly pump-top bottle and spill-proof design.

Best Budget

Cutex ultra-powerful nail polish remover.

Works quickly

Expert-recommended

Can be harsh on cuticles

Key Ingredients: Acetone | Amount: 6.8 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

"Cutex has been around forever and is a classic," says Aaron. "I like it because they offer a few different options, such as a remover with vitamin E and nutrients." This powerful nail polish remover can easily dissolve all types of lacquer, including salon-grade UV gel. Not only is it inexpensive, but also only a little is needed to remove even the toughest polish—so it can last you for a long time.

Best Pure Acetone

Onyx professional maximum strength nail polish remover.

Great value

Harsh on cuticles

Key Ingredients: Acetone | Amount: 16 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

"Acetone is a more powerful solvent, so it will break down a lot faster," says Aaron. If you're looking for something containing nothing more than acetone, she recommends Onyx. You can use this product to remove regular polish or soak off gel lacquer. For French nails , dip a small brush in and swipe it horizontally over your painted tips to create a clean line.

Olive & June Polish Remover Pot

Easy to use

Gentle yet effective

Not ideal for toes

Key Ingredients: Ethyl acetate, butyl acetate | Amount: 2 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This pink pot from Olive & June makes for easy-peasy, mess-free polish removal. The acetone-free formula leans on ethyl and butyl acetates to gently yet effectively erase all lacquer and prep your nail beds for your next manicure. It has a special sponge-top lid that you can use to remove the polish, so you won't need cotton wipes to soak the remover in.

Butter London Nail Scrubbers 2-in-1 Prep & Lacquer Remover Wipes

Travel-friendly

Replenishes nail beds

Single-use product

Key Ingredients: Acetone, vitamin E, aloe vera | Amount: 10 wipes | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Butter London Nail Scrubbers are not only convenient and travel-friendly, but they also do an impressive job removing the most stubborn, dark, or glittery polish. These one-swipe-wonders are soaked in acetone to quickly eliminate all traces of lacquer, plus vitamin E and aloe to prevent irritation and replenish your nail beds.

Best Gentle

Tenoverten the rose soak.

Eco-friendly packaging

Not fast-acting

Key Ingredients: Propylene carbonate, aloe vera, rosehip extract | Amount: 4 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Finding a nail polish remover that is both gentle and effective can be challenging. The Rose Soak contains propylene carbonate, a less harsh acetone alternative, plus soothing, fortifying ingredients like aloe vera and rosehip extract . We love the chic packaging that will look great on your vanity, and you can also recycle it when you're done.

Best Nondrying

Ella + mila jojoba nail polish remover.

Acetone- and alcohol-free

Moisturizing

Key Ingredients: Dimethyl glutarate, dimethyl adipate, jojoba oil, vitamin E | Amount: 4 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

This nail polish remover from Ella+Mila doesn't contain any acetone or alcohol, which can be drying. It effectively removes lacquer of any shade and replenishes the nail beds with a dose of moisturizing jojoba oil and soothing vitamin E. Another plus is that it doesn't have a harsh smell, making it a great choice for those with sensitive noses.

Best for Dark Polish

Deborah lippmann the stripper nail lacquer remover.

Small amount of product

Key Ingredients: Acetone, aloe vera, lavender essential oil | Amount: 4 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

"Darker colors are harder to remove," says Aaron, explaining that acetone-based formulas are usually best for deep nail polish shades . Deborah Lippmann's cheekily named The Stripper works quickly and effectively, calling on aloe vera to prevent dryness and lavender essential oil to mask the strong smell of acetone.

Best for Light Polish

People of color acetone-free nail polish remover.

Gentle formula

Minimal ingredients

Not ideal for dark colors

Key Ingredients: Methyl acetate | Amount: 4 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

"If you're removing regular lacquer, acetone can be too harsh, so just a basic polish remover is best," says Aaron. This acetone-free formula from People of Color effortlessly dissolves sheer-colored polish with methyl acetate, promising not to dry out your nail beds.

Best for Gel Polish

Sally hansen gel polish remover.

Soothes irritated skin

Key Ingredients: Acetone, aloe vera | Amount: 2 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

"Acetone tends to strip away the oils and not necessarily replenish the vitamins and nutrients in the nail, which makes it best for a gel polish," says Aaron. With this in mind, Sally Hansen's gel remover contains soothing aloe and moisturizing grape seed oil to replenish your nail beds.

Best Soak-Off

Lechat soak-off remover.

Generous amount

Doesn't dry out the skin

Effective on stubborn polish

Key Ingredients: Acetone | Amount: 32 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

"If you need a professional product for gel removal, LeChat Perfect Match is my go-to," offers Aaron. This no-nonsense formula uses acetone to soak off stubborn shellac and gel lacquer within minutes. We also love that it doesn't dry out the skin or nail beds.

Best for Manicure Prep

Mineral fusion nail polish remover.

Helps new polish stick

Won't cause irritation

Cruelty-free

Key Ingredients: Methyl acetate | Amount: 8 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Mineral Fusion is not only great for removing polish but also for prepping your nails for a fresh coat of paint. As Aaron explains, it works by "dehydrating the nail of oils so the gel or enhancement will stick to it better." While it's powerful and can remove dark and glitter polishes with ease, it's gentle on the skin and won't cause dry, brittle nails. It's a great pick for those with allergies or sensitive skin as it's free of common irritants such as artificial color and synthetic fragrance.

Best for Nail Art

Pronto pure acetone nail polish remover.

Can remove salon-quality nail polish and art

Has a small applicator for mess-free removal

Bottle leaks easily

Key Ingredients: Acetone | Amount: 8 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Going back to the nail salon just to get your nails removed can be a pain, but this pure acetone remover can clean off absolutely everything—including nail art and acrylics. It works quickly as well, so preparing for your next style can be a breeze. We also love that it has a smaller opening to distribute the product easier without causing a mess.

Best for Dry Skin

Dr. dana hydrating non-acetone nail polish remover.

Gentle and hydrating

Lovely smell

Vegan and cruelty-free

Can take a while to remove polish completely

Key Ingredients: Propylene carbonate, glycerin, grapefruit peel oil | Amount: 3.38 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes

If the skin around your nails often feels dehydrated and flaky or you just have thin or sensitive nails, we recommend this pick from Dr. Dana. This nail polish remover adds hydration back in while dissolving nail lacquer, and it has an acetone-free formula that works effectively without causing irritation. It uses natural ingredients ( grapefruit oil and rosemary leaf oil) to nourish the nails and cuticles—for nails that are simultaneously polish-free and soft.

What to Look for in a Nail Polish Remover

  • Acetone or Non-acetone: Acetone is great for breaking down more stubborn polishes (such as gel ) as well as darker shades. “If you’ve been wearing reds and darker colors, they are harder to remove and clean away from in between the cuticle and nail plate,” Aaron explains. On the flip side, non-acetone-based formulas tend to be more hydrating and gentle, good if you’re just wearing a lighter color of normal polish, she says. FYI, typically nail salons only use acetone since it works equally well on all kinds of polish, including gels and acrylics, she adds.
  • Extra Nutrients: Unless you’re using a pure acetone remover, Aaron says to seek out formulas that contain extra hydrating ingredients. She cites vitamin E as one of her top picks.

“A nail polish remover contains a powerful solvent that breaks down the polymer molecules. When this process takes place, the polish breaks down, changing the hardened polish into a liquid form that can easily be wiped off,” says Aaron.

“Acetone is a more powerful solvent, so it will break down the polish a lot faster,” Aaron explains, adding that many removers, unless they specifically say “non-acetone,” may contain a small percentage of the ingredient. Both acetone and non-acetone remover break down the polish, but acetone is way more powerful.

She interviewed two sources for this story, including a professional manicurist and a nail care expert, who offers product recommendations and insight into active ingredients. Before narrowing down the final picks, she looked at dozens of formulas and referenced ingredients in several peer-reviewed journals.

Ever Wonder Why Your At-Home Manicures Never Look Right? These Are the Proper Steps to Follow

K nowing how to give yourself a manicure at home is not only a practical and economical skill, but it's also a therapeutic pastime that lets you relax and focus on your self-care . With the right tools, techniques, and a touch of creativity, you can achieve salon-worthy nails without leaving the comfort of your space.

Patience is key as you prep your nails, select your nail polish , and perfect your painting technique. But whether you're new to the world of DIY nail art or looking to enhance your existing skills, this step-by-step, expert-approved guide on how to give yourself a manicure will walk you through the entire process.

Products to Stock in Your At-Home Nail Kit

If you want to give yourself an at-home manicure with results that rival that of your local nail salon, make sure you invest in high-quality tools. By not short-changing yourself on the products you use, you can help your manicure last longer.

Sophie Harris-Greenslade, the celebrity nail professional and artist behind The Illustrated Nail , recommends preparing your space beforehand so that all your manicure tools and products are within reach. Doing this prevents any interruptions to grab forgotten essentials, particularly once you've begun the nail-painting process.

In addition to your chosen nail polish color, Harris-Greenslade advises having these nail products on hand to help ensure a smooth application process.

  • Nail polish remover
  • Lint-free pads
  • Glass nail file
  • Cuticle softener
  • Cuticle pusher
  • Cuticle removers
  • Cuticle oil

How to Give Yourself a Manicure (in 10 Steps)

Step 1: sanitize and remove existing nail polish.

When you're ready to begin your manicure, it’s important to start with a clean slate and remove any old varnish from your nails. Choose a gentle, acetone-free nail polish remover to avoid drying out your nails and skin.

When removing nail polish, Harris-Greenslade recommends using lint-free pads, since regular cotton balls have fibers that can stick to the nail plate and potentially spoil the polish and design.

Step 2: Shape Your Nails

Use clippers to trim your nails to the desired length, then shape your nails with a nail file. Harris-Greenslade recommends using a fine-grit emery file or glass file to refine nail edges and create shape.

“Glass files are best for preventing splitting and peeling, and they last longer than emery files,” says Harris-Greenslade. “They can be cleaned, sanitized, and reused again, so they’re much more environmentally friendly than disposable files.”

Also, you can skip soaking your nails in warm water, which is what many salons traditionally do before shaping. According to Harris-Greenslade, soaking “can actually dry out the nails, leaving them weak and brittle.”

Step 3: Prep Your Cuticles

Once you've filed, apply cuticle oil to each nail. Harris-Greenslade says to choose a cuticle oil that contains jojoba, almond, or vitamin E. She says cuticle oil can be used as frequently as required by applying a small amount and massaging in with small circular movements around the cuticles.

Next, gently push back your cuticles using a cuticle pusher. For this part, Harris-Greenslade says it’s crucial to have one that’s made of good quality surgical stainless steel instead of plastic or wooden sticks which are disposable and less sustainable. Once you’re finished pushing back your cuticles, trim any excess carefully with your cuticle removers.

Step 4: Buff Nails

For this step, Harris-Greenslade suggests using a four-way buffer to exfoliate, buff, and polish each nail. This produces a high shine on the nail plate while also stimulating circulation, which helps improve the health of the nail.

“Lightly buffing the nails every 1-2 weeks helps stimulate blood circulation, which can improve the health of the nail and promote growth,” she explains. “Lightly etching the nail plate with a buffer helps remove any oils that can prevent good adhesion, so it will help the longevity of your nail polish and nail art design. Over-buffing however, is a common mistake. It can thin the nail plate, causing nails to become weak and prone to breaking.”

Step 5: Apply Base Coat

Apply a thin layer of your base coat to each nail. This helps protect your nails and provides a smooth surface for polish. Look for a good base coat to protect your nails and a top coat for added shine and durability.

Harris-Greenslade says a good-quality base coat protects the nail plate and acts as an anchor for the polish to extend longevity. It also prevents colored polish from staining the nail.

Step 6: Apply Nail Polish

Once your base coat dries, you can apply the first layer of nail polish. Use three strokes to do this: Start in the center of the nail, then apply on both sides. Let the first layer dry before applying a second coat.

To steady your hands, Harris-Greenslade recommends using a flat surface. She also suggests using the little finger of your working hand as a firm support to steady yourself. “It feels awkward at first, but it really does help you from wobbling all over the place,” she says.

Also, it's OK if you're not able to paint perfectly within the lines of your nail. “If you get polish on the surrounding skin, don’t panic,” says Harris-Greenslade. You'll clean this up after you're done varnishing your nails.

Step 7: Apply Top Coat

Once your nail polish is dry, apply a thin layer of top coat for shine and protection. This seals the tips of your nails to prevent chipping.

Step 8: Clean Up

Use a small brush dipped in nail polish remover to clean up any polish on your skin or cuticles. Be patient as you erase the excess color; this step adds to the neatness of your manicure.

Step 9: Moisturize

After your nail polish is completely dry, apply hand moisturizer to keep your hands and nails hydrated. Select a rich hand moisturizer to keep your hands and nails hydrated after the manicure.

Step 10: Maintenance

To extend the life of your manicure, apply a thin layer of top coat every few days. Remember to use gloves for household chores (like hand-washing dishes) to prevent your nail polish from quickly deteriorating.

Remember, practice makes perfect. Don't worry if your first at-home manicure isn't flawless — with time, your skills will improve. Keep experimenting with fun colors and designs and enjoy taking the time to pamper yourself in the process.

“Our hands are always visible to us, and I know that looking down at a gorgeous manicure and beautiful nail design brightens my mood and makes me feel happy and confident,” says Harris-Greenslade. “Taking the time out to give myself a bit of self-care with an at-home manicure is really beneficial for my mental health.”
