The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island

Table of Contents

Why have an itinerary for skopelos island anyway.

Like most people, when booking a holiday for a Greek island you don’t have a specific itinerary in mind. It’s only Skopelos – a small dot in the Aegean Sea and you’ll manage just fine without one.

You’d be surprised to know that more than half of our visitors will end-up having a week’s holiday, (or even more), without any plan at all. As a result, at the end of their break, they will have missed visiting many attractions and beautiful sights Skopelos Island has to offer.

You don’t want to reach Day 5 of your 7-day holiday and all you’ve seen is just 2 beaches and the beautiful view of our properties.

Now, more than ever, it’s really important to change the travel habits of our past – LINK TO LATEST COVID TRAVEL-. We need to emerge more into the local culture, see more of what Skopelos Island has to offer.

Having a Guide written by a local will help you decide what to see and do while here. It will be your starting point for your wandering adventures. It will make it much easier to have Skopelos Country Villas act as the starting point for each place suggested in this Itinerary.

It’s helpful having a plan, even if you end up doing some of the activities listed here.

If you’re reading this and you still haven’t booked your holiday break with us, you can Forget Everything you Know about renting Skopelos Villas and see how you can save money when booking accommodation.

Day 1 - Arriving in Skopelos Island

Consider this day as the ‘Boot Camp’ for Skopelos.

Arrival at Skopelos port.

You will be met by me here, (unless otherwise informed). Your car hire has been organised to be picked up either at the port or the office.

Your first glimpse of Skopelos town towering over the port will enhance your notion of a Greek island.

Beautifully arranged and amphitheatrically built, full of white-washed houses with red-tiled roofs.

Mount Palouki, (the 2nd highest on Skopelos Island), covered with a thick coat of various shades of green, warmly welcomes you.

This is the part you find hard to believe! Even in the heart of the summer, Skopelos remains the greenest island in the whole area. Your brain plays tricks with your conscious self, making you forget you’re on a Greek island. Skopelos Country Villas Tweet This

Becoming acquainted with the roads - not as hard as you'd think

Just follow my car as we slowly make our way to Skopelos Country Villas.

We drive around the outskirts of town, by following its ring road as we ascend to the top of Skopelos. Yes, traffic may seem a little weird and less organised than usual, but consider it as part of your ‘immersion experience’. We soon drive off this road by taking the quieter, country roads.

This is the part you find hard to believe! Even in the heart of the summer, Skopelos remains the greenest island in the whole area. Your brain plays tricks with your conscious self, making you forget you’re on a Greek island.

After a short, 15-minute drive, we arrive at your villa. The ‘WOW’ factor of the views unfolding before your eyes immediately remind you of the exact reasons you chose this place.

Your first day is a great chance to get your bearings in Skopelos town. The port area is your first contact. It is full of charming waterside cafes, tavernas and shops.

A great chance to unwind and have something to eat.

If you find that you have some left-over energy after your meal, this is your chance to utilise it. Walk around the waterfront area, discover some of the hundreds of small streets and alleys.

It will be a very inspiring ending to a full day!

Day 2 - Exploring the West Coast of Skopelos Island

Wake up! It’s a glorious day out there and a perfect opportunity to catch that early morning light!

The glorious sunrise awaits you! Seriously, you really need to make an effort to see at least one sunrise from here. It is the perfect spot for ‘Sunrise Watching’.

The energy around you is incredible at that time of the morning!

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island

Time for some strong coffee and a good breakfast too! Are you brave enough for an early morning pool dip? This will surely awaken you.

Today, you will be driving to the west coast of Skopelos. It’s time for your first swim in the deep blue of the Aegean Sea.

The west side of the island has some of the most magnificent beaches of Skopelos.

Get your cameras ready as you will take one of the most breathtaking drives.

The Delfi Mountain-Scenic Route of Skopelos  offers many stopover points. You ought to get out of your car and take in all the vista views of the coastline below you. Mount Delfi, is the highest point of Skopelos Island, (685 m) and is totally covered by tall Pine trees.

This thick pine forest has greeted thousands of visitors like you as they drive down towards the small, sleepy town of Elios.

This Route will become your All-time favourite

A winding road I never grow bored of driving. A thrilling ride that will manage to spell-bind you with its majestic views.

At the end of this route, you will reach a small junction. A right turn will lead you to Elios town.

This sleepy seaside town is home to one of the Top Skopelos Beaches  and a few seafood tavernas.

If you take a left from this junction, you’ll be heading towards Kastani Beach, (aka Mamma Mia Beach).

It’s up to you to decide whether you indulge yourselves with this popular Mamma Mia beach today or continue around the bay.

Milia Beach is just around the bay. This is one of my very favourites and the longest stretch of beach Skopelos has to offer.

Be proud of your achievement for the day!

You saw a good part of the mountains and part of the magnificent west. Let’s head back to Skopelos Country Villas by driving back up through the Scenic Route.

Time to relax by the pool and catch the last reflections of the sunset light bouncing off the mountains to the east!

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island

Day 3 - Getting lost in Skopelos Town

The best way to explore the town is to wander through its maze of alleys and cobblestone streets.

You can’t claim that you’ve seen Skopelos town unless you get lost at least twice.

My recommendation is to drive to the port parking area to leave your car there.

Walk all around the waterfront area and head to the old port.

There is a ‘Sailor’s Monument’ there, and shortly after, you will see the picturesque church of ‘Panagia tou Pirgou’. You can’t miss this church as it has been a proud landmark of Skopelos Island for many decades.

This is where your 'Skopelos Island - Cross-Fit' session begins.

You need to wear some comfortable shoes, (preferably trainers), as there is nothing else on this route other than steps.

It is well worth your energy, however, as you will be rewarded with some great views from the historic edge of Skopelos town.

There are 5 chapels along this ascending road, each with its own history through the Greek ‘Dark Ages of the Ottoman rule’.

As you make your way up, you will also pass a very chilled-out Cafe called ‘Thalassa”. It rests on the first of 2 squares you’ll walk through and borders one of the oldest churches, “Evangelistria”.

The views towards the endless blue sea are heart-stirring. The owners are a bit quirky, but the views and music alone more than make up for this.

The very next square, (after climbing another endless array of steps), rewards you with one of the very best views Skopelos town has to offer.

Taking the time to notice the scenery

Make sure you give yourselves the time to absorb the scenery around you.

You won’t find this panoramic view anywhere else! It is also one of my favourite hang out spots since I was actually born in this neighbourhood.

We still live here, and I use it as my ‘serenity’ place.

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island - Views from Old Town - Kastro

You will also see the last church along this route.

The church of ‘Agios Athanasios’ is probably one of the 2 oldest churches on the island. If the doors are open while you’re there, make sure you go inside.

The remaining frescoes decorating its stone walls date back to approx. 14th century.

This is the east side of ‘Kastro’, (the Castle), and its remnants still stand guard to the vast Aegean Sea that unfolds before them.

Walk to the very top of Kastro where you will pass a taverna that occupies the north-east corner.

In the evenings, Greek Blues Live music mingles with the hardships of the past. The terrors and the battles of the locals are still hovering about, through their successful efforts to fend off the relentless Pirates of the Aegean. Skopelos Country Villas Tweet This

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island - Kastro walls

Your descent into Skopelos town

As soon as you walk through this place, you will notice wooden railings at the top and cobblestone steps going down.

This is the best part of Kastro. Its walls have been preserved through the centuries, all the way to the foundation.

You can touch the ‘Cyclopian’ boulders that were used to fortify this residential area and get glimpses of its glorious past.

Any road you follow from this point will eventually lead you back down to the port.

Meanwhile, get ready to discover the small streets and traditional architecture of Skopelos town.

Bonus Tip - Do you still have some left-over energy?

It will be an even more rewarding day if you can manage a drive up to the monasteries.

If you follow the road that takes you around Skopelos bay, it will take you approximately 15-20 minutes to reach the very top.

Just follow the signs pointing towards ‘Moni Evangelismou’ and ‘Moni Prodromou, (the furthers on this group of monasteries).

Start driving uphill, conquering Mount Palouki.

There are at least 2 stopover points halfway where you need to step out of your car and take some spectacular photos.

It is mostly an asphalted road all the way to the top of the mountain.

The architecture of the monasteries varies and is very interesting to see.

The views from 570 meters towards  Skopelos bay below you will remain embedded in your memories for many months to come.

Day 4 - Reaching the north-east corner of Skopelos Island

A day of adventure begins!

This is the day where you will realise that Skopelos Island is not just a tiny island. It will take most of your day, so take all your swimming gear with you and plenty of water.

Wild, sea-beaten, vegetation lives side-by-side with untouched Pine forests. The rugged sea cliffs scattered all along, seem to be the only sentinels of the powerful north winds for this luscious, virgin landscape. Skopelos Country Villas Tweet This

You will be driving on what seems to be an endless road to reach the ‘ Mamma Mia Chapel  of ‘Agios Ioannis’.

This is where a 4x4 would've come in handy

You can take the more adventurous route and follow the unsurfaced road of the east coast, (if you have a 4×4), or follow the Scenic Route mentioned earlier.

If you follow the east coast route you can witness one of the most rugged but magnificent coasts that Skopelos Island has to offer.

Wild, sea-beaten, vegetation lives side-by-side with untouched Pine forests. The rugged cliffs scattered all along, seem to be the only sentinels of this virgin landscape.

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island - Driving along the East coast

As you reach the end of this road on the north side, (shaped like a bottleneck on the map),  you can glimpse both the east and west sides of the island.

You’re now very close to the Mamma Mia Rock.

After a brief descend off this route, you’ll be driving on the main, coastal road towards Glossa.

Look for the sign on the right of this road, pointing you down to the chapel of Agios Ioannis.

Visiting this place and making an effort to drive here is a MUST.

Aside from the ‘Mamma Mia’ madness, this was always a special place. A sight that only a few more savvy travellers would know about.

It is not a place for those with a fear of heights. But don’t let this stop you. If you really can’t stomach ascending the Rock, stay around its base.

You can still take many mesmerising pictures and enjoy a great swim and snorkelling in the small 2 coves there that are some of the most  secluded beaches of Skopelos .

Energy Bonus - Why not visit Glossa?

It is the 2nd largest village of Skopelos Island after all. Giving it a miss would be a pity.

Glossa is perched on the highest hills, north-west of Skopelos. This naturally means that it is ‘exposed’ to some of the most mesmerising sunsets this island has to offer.

There is a strong feeling of nostalgia from bygone eras swivelling in the air. A certain curiosity towards visitors is everywhere you walk around Glossa. This sense emanates from the enchanting courtyards where the locals rest and sip their coffee. Skopelos Country Villas Tweet This

You're so close to Glossa village from this point

It’s only a few hundred meters after the Mamma Mia Chapel. Just take a right turn at the junction of the main road.

You can try parking on the small lot behind the first, big church you will encounter as you drive through.

It feels like time has stood still for this place. This feeling is the same every single time I visit my 3 good friends that own ‘Monogramma Bar’.

Walking on the cobblestone streets and through the many hills Glossa is built upon, is pure joy.

There is a strong feeling of nostalgia from bygone eras swivelling in the air. A certain curiosity towards visitors is everywhere you walk around Glossa. This sense emanates from the enchanting courtyards where the locals rest and sip their coffee.

This is where I go every time I get the feeling of wanting to get away from it all. Be a near-stranger among strangers.

Have a drink or two at my favourite Monogramma Bar and re-calibrate my life.

Day 5 - Conquering the mountains and diving to the seas of Skopelos Island

You happen to be in one of the most lovely areas of Skopelos.

It is a privilege to be able to experience both the deep blue seas and the lush forests of this island.

This is why our location makes it to the  Top 5 reasons to choose our Villas vs a Hotel for your holiday .

You’re very close to Skopelos Town, (7.5km), and in the valley of Mount Delfi. Home to one of the best attractions the area has to offer, the  Mystic Sendoukia graves .

A set of 3 Neolithic sarcophagi, dating back to at least 5th century BC. The sense of mysticism covers the entire slope of this place, and the good vibes can be felt no matter what time of day you go there.

The rewards of an early morning start

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary for Skopelos Island - Sendoukia Tombs with Guests

Try and reach the top of this peak by  6 am even if you’re not an early riser.

It’s the time of day when most of the positive energy sips out of every pore of this granite surface covering this area.

Aside from the energy that will be powering the rest of your day, you can also catch the sun rising from behind Alonnisos and the deserted south-east islands.

It is moments like these that stay engraved in our memories.

Witnessing the sun emerging with its splendid hues of orange, red and yellow. Breathing the aromas of thyme and oregano that surround the small granite crevices all around us.

Capturing these scenes in our camera is not often easy, as you can’t really capture the accompanying senses that create this surreal scene. So I wouldn’t lose out on the few precious moments of the sun rising in order to capture the perfect scene.

Witness the sunrise and allow a few minutes of solitude to pay your respects towards the ‘unseen’ Gods of the past creating this magic.

Go West or East?

You will have about a 15-minute descent back to where you left your car to decide about your next steps.

From here, you can drive west over the mountain and visit Kastani Beach, Milia or the beautiful Panormos bay.

It is also a great chance to visit Glysteri beach-LINK . A beautiful bay protected from the north-east winds by a well-hidden cove. It’s also the closest beach to Skopelos Country Villas.

Whichever way you decide to follow, it will be the perfect ending to a rejuvenating hike to the tombs of Sendoukia.

Day 6 - Exploring the South-West Corners of Skopelos Island

No visit to Skopelos would be complete without discovering the calm waters of the south-west.

Because of their closer proximity to Skopelos town, they tend to get a little busier during the high peak of the summer, (July and August). This shouldn’t stop you from exploring them, however.

Start driving down to Skopelos town and towards the port area. Instead of turning left to the port, continue driving straight at the last junction, (instead of turning left for the port).

There is a gas station in the corner of that junction too.

You’re now on your way towards Stafylos and Velanio Beach. The two beaches closest to Skopelos town. Just 4 km later on that same road, you will come upon the turning point where you head down left towards the parking area.

Do some walking for a stress-free experience during your holiday

I would advise you to park your car as high up on that small road as possible.

It’s only 500 meters from Stafylos beach, so it’s best to walk the rest of the way there.

You will thank me later when you see all the cars parked right and left along that road.

Enjoy the azure waters of Stafylos Beach and make sure you do some snorkelling along the beach.

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island-Stafylos and Velanio Beaches

Walk to the end of the beach where you will find the small path that leads to Velanio Beach.

Due to the lack of proper road and easy access, it’s always quieter here.

The 2nd half of that beach is a well-known nudist retreat too. No matter which half you decide to dry off your bodies on, Velanio Beach remains one of the most exquisite beaches Skopelos Island has to offer.

Heading off to Agnondas and Limnonari Beaches

Continue driving past the Stafylos, and just 2 km later, you’ll arrive at the small bay of Agnondas.

You will usually find some hammocks lazily swaying under the shade of an olive tree, inviting you to be part of these ultimate, summer chill-out experiences. Skopelos Country Villas Tweet This

Known for its mesmerising sunsets, its idyllic landscape and the seafood tavernas.

There are 3 tavernas and a Cafe here offering the perfect setting for the ultimate Greek holiday memorable experience.

You can indulge in some great seafood, a dive in the green-blue waters, and watch the sunset.

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary for Skopelos Island-Bay of Agnondas

Limnonari beach offers a similar experience. The beach here is bigger than Agnondas.

The waters here, often resemble those of a lagoon, due to the cove that protects them from the very occasional south wind.

The taverna may not be as close to the water as in Agnondas, but it offers a very relaxed and laid back atmosphere. The tables are spread around within the boundaries of a private olive grove.

You will usually find some hammocks lazily swaying under the shade of an olive tree. Inviting you to be part of these ultimate, summer chill-out experiences.

Day 7 - Catching up on missed opportunities - Allowing time

Trying to fit everything within a week, can be stressful during your holiday. I’m only suggesting  places I consider important for you to see while staying at Skopelos Country Villas.

This can be the day you can visit a beach or place you didn’t manage to fit in during your previous 6 days here.

If you managed to fit everything in and looking for something new to conquer, here are my next 2 tips:

Have you conquered the 'Top of the World' yet? Have you been to the highest peak of Skopelos Island?

The Perfect 7 Day Itinerary For Skopelos Island-Observatory Views

It’s not the easiest to find so follow my instructions on ‘The Highest Peak of Skopelos and its Observatory’ and you’ll reach the top much faster.

It is a unique place. The kind that fulfils your sense of Achievement and leaves you with the most spectacular vista views. These pictures will occupy the best part of your cameras and your heart.

The best times to get there is either in the morning, (as early as you can), or just before sunset.

This way, you will allow for some time to have that last swim, or better yet, enjoy a Canoe paddling experience.

It is a great chance to paddle up to some otherwise, off-limit shores. Go through some beautiful rock tunnels and become one with the perfect-blue Aegean Sea.

Wrapping up the 'Perfect 7 Day Itinerary for Skopelos Island'

Deciding what to include or what to exclude from this short 7-day visit was not an easy task.

I tried to combine both spectacular beaches as well as mountains and other attractions.

The places listed here will provide you with different experiences and a more complete picture of what Skopelos Island has to offer.

Having you as our guests at Skopelos Country Villas means that your love for the outdoors is equal to that of being a beach lover.

In addition, the order of days and places to visit was no coincidence either. I tried to gradually introduce you to each place without having you ‘burn out’ early on in your week.

Are there more places to see in Skopelos?

There are more adventures to experience.

More shores to land on and hidden places to conquer.

But this is best left for a separate article geared towards a longer stay.

 Where is Skopelos?

Skopelos is part of the northern Sporades Islands in the Aegean Sea. These are located just off the east coast of Greece north of the island of Evia (Euboea) – the second biggest Greek island after Crete.

Skopelos is larger in size than both Santorini and Mykonos with an area of 96 square kilometres (37 square miles). The nearest islands with any sizable population are Skiathos to the west and Alonissos to the east.

When to visit Skopelos

Tourist season in the Greek Islands runs between May all the way through early November. Visitor numbers peak in the summer months which is considered high season for the island.

Like many of the Greek islands, Skopelos has a Mediterranean climate. This makes summer the best time to visit.

Warm weather is to be expected between June and September with the hottest month of the year being July. Temperatures can reach highs of 32°C and lows of 21°C.

If you are looking for a beach break, visiting any time in summer should give you sunny days and a low chance of rain.

The shoulder months of May and October may be the best time to visit Skopelos if you want fewer crowds and cheaper prices. You will still experience pleasant weather but without hordes of tourists.

How to get to Skopelos

As with many of the Greek islands, getting to Skopelos means getting there by boat.

Ferries connect up with the island’s main port (also called Skopelos), but there are three ports in total on the island.

There are a variety of different types of ferries. Some of these are for foot passengers only while others take cars in addition.

Getting there from the mainland can be achieved by ferry via a couple of routes. Firstly, you could opt to take the ferry from Agios Konstantinos in central Greece (three hours) as there is no ferry to Skopelos from Athens.

Another option is to board the ferry that departs from Volos in Thessaly. This route takes two hours.

And a further option again (and how I did it) is to fly to the neighbouring island of Skiathos (see below) and ferry from there, which takes around an hour.

If you are arriving in Athens the best option is to take the bus from the capital to Agios Konstantinos, which takes two hours. After that you simply hop on the ferry.

There are also ferry connections that connect Skopelos with nearby islands including Skyros, Alonissos, and Evia. These inter-island ferries are more frequent in the summer months, which is yet another reason to visit in summer rather than winter.

Flying to Skopelos

Skopelos has no airport so if you were thinking of catching a flight there, you’ll have to reconsider.

The closest airport is on the nearby Skiathos island. Domestic flights connect Skiathos with Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as destinations around Europe in the summer months.

From Skiathos, you can then take one of the daily ferry connections to Skopelos (around one hour).

 Getting around Skopelos

A good way to get around Skopelos is by using its bus network . The KTEL buses work well if you want to explore the island and visit some of the more popular beaches and villages. Most of the buses start and end in Skopelos town. There are four different bus routes costing between €2 and €4.

There are taxi ranks in the main towns on Skopelos and they are good for getting around after you have been out for the evening. Note that these do not use the meter and have an established rate for journeys, although this can be somewhat expensive. Be sure to ask first.

Car/scooter rental

The best way to get around is by hiring your own set of wheels. Car hire can be reasonable especially out of high season. If you are visiting in the height of summer, then you might want to book ahead.

Skopelos Accommodation

There are three main towns & villages that are popular bases for those who are visiting Skopelos.

The main one is Skopelos town . This is the main port and capital of the island and is a protected Heritage site. It’s a pretty town with beautiful, white-washed buildings and colourful wooden shutters. There’s even a 13th-century castle here.

Some of the nicest accommodations here are self-catering options overlooking the sea such as Aeolos Hotel . There is also the charming Denise Hotel and beautiful Olia Green , a boutique luxury hotel with stunning waterfront rooms.

For something truly special , romantic and secluded check out Christine’s House up in the hills with its chic luxe styling and private pool. Or, high on the hill in Skopelos Town there are Villea Seaview Apartments , three utterly charming little houses that are right out of a postcard. Great value and excellent service by the wonderful host as well.

If you are travelling as a family or group check out Artemis Garden on the outskirts of town who have a gorgeous 2 and 3 bedroom villa set amongst a stunning tranquil garden. Another excellent option is Thimisi House , a stunning renovated house in the heart of Skopelos Town which can sleep up to 7 people in 3 bedrooms.

Budget travellers would be hard-pressed to beat Thea Home Hotel or Pansion Prodromina for both ambience and amenities or Achinos one-bedroom Guest House if you want something fully self-contained and very private.

Another place to stay on Skopelos is Skopelos Glossa – it is the second largest town and is located 25 kilometres from the capital. It is a sloping village with white-washed houses and views out over the sea. The ferry port here makes it a good place to stay if you want to explore nearby islands too. Here we are big fans of Aegean Wave and Natura Luxury Boutique Hotels.

The third option is Neo Klima . This resort village is located 19 kilometres to the west of the capital and has lots of local tavernas and shops as well as a good beach for swimming and sun-bathing. Check out Anna Marie-Vanessa Apartments right on the waterfront and Elios 2- bedroom villas in the hills above.

Or, for the full resort experience Adrina Beach Hotel , just outside Panormos, is located right on one of the best beaches on the island and has some of the best reviews in Greece!

Skopelos restaurants and food

Food to try.

There are many traditional Greek dishes to expect on the island of Skopelos. When dining in local tavernas, you can enjoy classics such as stuffed tomatoes , moussaka , Greek salad and beef stifado .

One local speciality that you should try is strifti pie – a mouthwatering goat’s cheese and spinach pastry that is deep-fried. Like most of the Greek Islands ( actually all of them!) Seafood plays a big part in the cuisine of Skopelos especially when you’re eating near a beach or port. Fish is locally caught, and popular dishes include grilled sardines , stuffed squid and lobster .

Plums are a favourite and are grown widely on the island. They often come served with meat such as pork or rabbit and can be used on desserts. Local honey and fruits are also a must-try.

Skopelos tavernas, bars and cafes

You are in for a treat when you are dining out on Skopelos. There is a big selection of local tavernas and eateries situated in cobbled lanes and right by the sea.

Recommended restaurants include the famous Agnanti in Glossa, which has been a favourite and landmark eatery since it opened its doors in 1958. Stou Dimitraki enjoys a similar reputation in Skopelos Town.

Zoupa in Skopelos town is a romantic spot in an oasis courtyard that provides meals made with local produce as does very charming Olivo. Azan is the new kid on the block and has been causing quite a stir since opening.

It’s worth a trip up the hill in Skopelos Town to visit Peparithos with its sweeping views and beautiful garden and similarly Η Πλατεία in Neo Klima for its authentic Barbeque.

For somewhere to eat with ocean views nothing beats The Muses , also located in Skopelos town or Nikos Taverna in Panormos or Korali Seafood Restaurant on Agnontas Beach (see photo below).

In terms of Bars Vrachos All Day Bar on the harbour in Skopelos Town is the place to be or Mercurius Cocktail Bar for a late-night tipple.

There are numerous tavernas on the beaches that have sunbeds and umbrellas including Apanemo Beach Bar on Limnonari Beach, Milia Beach Bar on Milia Beach and popular Kastani Beach Bar on Kastani Beach which has lots of shade and plenty of sunbeds.

Things to do on Skopelos

Skopelos beaches.

The beaches in the Sporades Islands are generally very good and Skopelos is no exception. With forests of trees hanging right down to the crystal clear water the conditions are excellent for a very laid back Greek beach vacation.

Stafilos Beach is five kilometres from Skopelos town. It is a large pebble beach in a curving bay that is lapped by sparkling waters. Here, you can find a taverna for a lazy lunch and a beach bar for drinks and snacks.

The main beach in Skopelos town is also a good option. It is close to accommodation and eateries, but so-called Town Beach is not the most beautiful beach on the island. There are some ruins of a temple nearby for something to add to this beach outing.

Hovolo Beach is one of the most picture-perfect beaches on the island. Much of the natural environment here is unspoilt, so don’t come here expecting water sports or many facilities. Instead, you can enjoy rocks and interesting coves for snorkeling and exploring.

Twelve kilometers from Skopelos town you will find Panormos Beach . It is an attractive spot with great facilities that makes it perfect for spending a long day by the sea.

Neo Klima’s Elios Beach is a pleasant place for soaking up some sun. It has amenities such as showers and tavernas. This part of the island’s coastline is linked to its patron saint, Riginos.

One of the most popular things to do on Skopelos in recent years is the Mama Mia Island Tour . This will take you to the beautiful little Church where the wedding took place as well as other spots of interest used in the film.

Monuments of Skopelos

Skopelos Church of Agios Ioannis Kastri (Chapel of St.John)

Currently the most famous landmark on Skopelos, this lovely church is located seven kilometers to the north of Glossa. It was here that some scenes from the movie Mamma Mia were filmed. It is a particularly pretty church that sits up high on rocks and overlooks the island’s coastline.

Monastery of Evangelistria

You will find this important monument just outside of Skopelos town. It sits on the slopes of Mount Palouki and was originally constructed in 1712. The monastery is home to valuable religious icons from the Byzantine era and the internal dome is covered in Gold Leaf. The views are also quite stunning.

Venetian Castle

The Venetians were one of the many civilizations that laid claim to the island of Skopelos through the ages. One remnant of their rule can be found in the island’s main town. Getting to the castle is part of the fun as it involves walking through winding streets up to the high fortress.

Sentoukia pirate graveyard

Though this sight is more off the beaten track it is still an interesting thing to discover while staying on Skopelos. Centuries ago, pirates would plunder the island and others in the area and these tombs have been connected to them. In truth nobody knows who the tombs are for or how long they have been there.

Museums of Skopelos

Antoniou Family Olive Oil Museum

This olive oil mill with beautiful views is situated close to Glossa. Here you can learn about olive oil and purchase cold-press olive oil made right there for a delicious souvenir.

Skopelos Cultural Heritage Museum (Folklore Museum of Glossa)

This museum is situated in a renovated house built in 1926 in the village of Glossa. The museum opened its doors in 2008 and works to promote the cultural history of the island. Here you can see items from Skopelos naval history as well as photographs, manuscripts, and personal belongings.

Skopelos Folklore Museum ( Vakratsa Mansion )

This museum is situated in a historic house right in the middle of Skopelos town. It tells the story of the folk traditions of the area. The furniture in the museum belonged to the original family who owned it.

Museum of History

This museum is situated inside the house of 19th-century writer Pavlos Nirvanas. Today it showcases items from the history of the island of Skopelos from antiquity to the present day.

SKOPELOS Nature and outdoors

Drakontoschisma

This rock is connected to a legend regarding Saint Riginos. The dragon was terrorizing and eating the residents of the island until Riginos hunted the dragon down and killed it (apparently around 800 years ago). It is possible to get to Drakontoschisma by boat or you can view it from the cliffs above.

Scuba diving

Those who like to dive will find Skopelos an interesting spot to do so. There are multiple dive centers on the island that offer guided diving tours of great locations situated around the coastline. Free diving is also well known on Skopelos.

Like many Greek islands Skopelos offers many opportunities to walk around in its beautiful natural setting. There are a number of different trails for visitors, from simple strolls along the coast to full day hikes between villages on the island. It pays to take join a local on a guided hike too.

Taking a boat out to explore neighbouring islands is a popular option on Skopelos. One option is to head to Alonissos. This island boasts its very own national marine park. Here you may be able to spot dolphins, seals, and seabirds in their natural habitat.

posted by Nikos Tsakiris on June 9, 2023 // last updated on June 15, 2023

Nestled between Skiathos and Alonissos in the Sporades island group, Skopelos, Greece, gained popularity as the filming location for the hit musical movie, Mamma Mia.

With its picturesque atmosphere and stunning beaches, it’s no wonder this idyllic destination has become a favourite amongst couples and families seeking a serene escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.

Arguably the most charming aspects of Skopelos are its two main settlements: the postcard-worthy main port of Skopelos Town, situated on the southeast coast, and the equally delightful village of Glossa in the northwest, just 2km north of the island’s second port, Loutraki.

Within these charming locales, visitors can stroll through cobbled streets, explore ancient monasteries, and indulge in the island’s serene, laid-back lifestyle.

Skopelos offers a wealth of activities for travellers to partake in during their visit, all favouring leisurely pursuits like swimming, hiking, and discovering hidden gems among the island’s breathtaking landscapes.

Among the 24 islands that make up the Sporades archipelago, Skopelos is a standout choice that guarantees unforgettable memories and adventure.

If you’re looking for a Greek escape away from the crowds, this overlooked and underrated island in the Northern Sporades can turn your dreams to reality.

Though it’s better known than its low key (but incredibly gorgeous) neighbour Alonissos , Skopelos certainly isn’t a part of the usual Greece tourist trail. While the rest of the world flocks to Santorini and Mykonos for their whitewashed villages and Instagrammable viewpoints, Skopelos offers a relaxed but authentic alternative, as well as far better value for money.

filip travel skopelos

The middle of summer does see the island turn into a bustling hub of travellers, many domestic visitors or international travellers on organised package tours, but outside of July/August and beyond the main tourist spots I can guarantee you’ll be able to find a slice of paradise just for yourself.

I visited Skopelos in late June 2023 and swiftly fell in love, Greece was already one of my favourite countries in Europe but this island gem pushed it even higher on my list. I couldn’t find a huge amount of information on the Sporades islands due to the lower tourist numbers there so I wanted to put together a detailed Skopelos travel guide to help you plan your trip!

In this travel guide I’ll give you loads of practical info on Skopelos, share some of the island’s best things to do, see and eat, and give some suggestions on where to stay too.

All you need to know about Skopelos, Greece

Is skopelos worth visiting.

100% it is! With its untouched natural beauty and a calm vibe that’s increasingly rare in popular Greek islands, Skopelos is more than worth visiting. It’s got decent infrastructure that make it accessible and easy to travel around, plenty of untouched beaches to explore, a brilliant local culinary scene and loads of authentic character.

What is Skopelos known for?

Aside from its lush scenery, Skopelos gained fame as the filming location for the 2008 hit ‘Mamma Mia!’. The island’s cinematic history draws some movie buff international travellers, and there are organised filming location tours to tick off the key spots you’d recognise in the film.

Where is Skopelos, Greece?

Located in the Northern Sporades, Skopelos lies east of mainland Greece, nestled between the islands of Skiathos and Alonissos.

filip travel skopelos

How to get to Skopelos

There’s no airport on Skopelos, but you can catch a one hour ferry from Skiathos (an island with the nearest airport) or a 2h 45m ferry from Volos on the mainland (which is accessible by plane or bus).

How to get around Skopelos

It’s best to rent a car, scooter or quad bike to explore the island at your own pace.

There are local buses that go to most of the main tourist spots, but the schedule is limited so if you get to a beach and change your mind due to the crowds, you might need to wait a couple of hours until the next bus comes past.

If you don’t want to drive then the easiest way to see the island would be with organised tours, there are various operators that run different routes like beach-hopping trips, the Mamma Mia bus tour or hiking tours.

How long to visit Skopelos

Ideally a 4-5 day Skopelos itinerary allows enough time to soak up the island’s beauty, but if you have more time then a week would let you fully embrace the laidback island lifestyle.

I visited for three days and felt a bit rushed to see and do everything, an extra day or two would’ve made it a more comfortable trip.

filip travel skopelos

When is the best time to visit Skopelos

Late spring (May/June) and early autumn (September/October) are ideal. You’ll enjoy warm weather and fewer crowds. July and August are peak tourist months, so expect more hustle and bustle, more tour buses and inflated prices.

Weather in Skopelos

Skopelos enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry, while springs and autumns are mild and pleasant, perfect for exploring and beach-hopping.

Busy season in Skopelos

July and August are the busiest, which means higher accommodation rates, busier restaurants and packed beaches. It’s nothing like what you’d see in Santorini and Mykonos in those months, but it’s definitely not going to show you the island at its best.

If you prefer a quieter experience, aim for the shoulder months when the weather is still lovely, but the crowds have thinned.

Is Skopelos safe for solo female travellers?

Yes, Skopelos is generally safe for solo female travellers and I felt comfortable the entire time I was there.

Like any travel destination, it’s always wise to stay aware of your surroundings, but the island’s laid-back and friendly atmosphere makes it a welcoming place for everyone.

filip travel skopelos

Where else can you visit near Skopelos?

Consider hopping over to Skiathos or Alonissos . Each island has its own unique charm and is well worth a visit if you have extra time in the Sporades.

Where to stay in Skopelos

Budget | There are some excellent places to stay in Skopelos even if you’re on a tight budget. Consider Stolios , Dafni Studios , Studios Filippos , Irene’s Paradise and Spiros Rooms for a cheap sleep.

Mid-range | Aegean Wave , Fasolaki , Niki Apartments , Aperitton Hotel and Panormos Beach Hotel are all top-rated mid-range options.

Luxury | Adrina Beach Hotel , Skopelos Holidays & Hotel and Olia Green are luxury options with great reviews, or for a real treat you could consider Adrina Resort & Spa , a 5* beachfront paradise.

For a group | Villa Kingstone looks gorgeous and can fit four people, Stargaze Villas has space for eight adults and Villa Aelia can fit 11.

Things to do in Skopelos

Take a mamma mia tour.

A Mamma Mia tour is one of the most popular things to do in Skopelos, and your trip won’t be complete without ticking off filming locations while singing along to ABBA’s greatest hits!

The two main movie spots that the tours visit are Agios Ioannis (the Chapel of St John), Agnontas and Kastani Beach, but some may include a couple more.

You can book this top-rated bus tour or this tour is a small-group option , or just rent your own vehicle and visit the locations on your own time.

filip travel skopelos

Visit Agios Ioannis

Even if you’re not fussed about the fact it was featured in the movie, Agios Ioannis is still totally worth a visit. Perched on top of a 100m rock in the sea, you’ve got to climb 100+ narrow steps precariously carved into the stone to reach it.

The church at the top is tiny, but the view back towards the mainland is what really will blow your mind.

filip travel skopelos

Cruise around the island

Seeing Skopelos by sea is a must-do, and there are a number of local operators who run incredible half-day and full-day cruises to different bays and beaches around the island.

Some cruises include a BBQ lunch or packed lunch, some might visit the nearby islands of Alonissos and/or Skiathos, most of them include at least one snorkel or swim stop, and most of them take you into the National Marine Park of Alonissos.

The boat schedules vary depending on the month and there’s not a huge amount of reliable information online, so your best bet is to head to the port in Skopelos when you arrive and talk to the operators who have stalls in front of their boats, or head into a local travel agency.

If you’d prefer to book a private trip for you and your travel buddies, this top-rated private boat tour has space for up to six people.

filip travel skopelos

Explore the hills of the old town

Skopelos’ Old Town is a labyrinth of winding alleyways flanked by traditional white houses with flower gardens and colourful doors, you might think you were in Mykonos if it weren’t for the fact it’s so quiet!

Go for a walk and get lost in the historical centre, just be respectful of the fact these are people’s homes and don’t disrupt the locals.

If you prefer to learn about destinations from local guides, my top recommendation would be to do the Secrets of Skopelos Town tour , it’s rated 5/5 and includes a guided walking tour, local wine tasting and dinner in a traditional taverna. Dreamy!

filip travel skopelos

See the church of Panagitsa tou Pyrgou (Holy Mary of the Castle)

Move over blue domes, this 17th century church has got to be one of the most Instagrammable buildings in Greece thanks to its traditional Greek architecture and magnificent panoramic outlook.

Standing above Skopelos Harbour and looking out to the Aegean Sea, the chapel is easily reached by a short but steep walk from the port area. The chapel interior is equally impressive, with frescoes and other religious artwork dating back hundreds of years. The church is meant to be open to visitors during the day but when I went (June 2023) it was closed, so I’m not sure if that was a one-off or just an island-time kind of thing!

If you do want to go inside you’ll need to wear appropriate clothing and ensure your knees and shoulders are covered.

filip travel skopelos

Just like the neighbouring island of Alonissos , Skopelos offers incredible diving opportunities for those keen to discover the world below the surface.

The crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea, combined with varied underwater topography of caves, coral reefs and shipwrecks, make it the perfect place to scuba for both beginners and experienced divers.

I spent a day on and under the water with the top-rated Skopelos Dive Center , they have a couple of bases on the island and they run snorkelling, scuba diving, freediving and paddle boarding trips.

filip travel skopelos

Soak up the sun at the stunning beaches

Skopelos is home to countless beaches and bays, ranging from organised ones with amenities through to totally unspoiled ones hidden from the main roads.

Some of the beaches to add to your Skopelos itinerary are:

  • Milia Beach – A popular one but for good reason, this has some of the clearest water I’ve ever, ever seen in my life (and I’ve seen a lot of clear water!). With striking white pebbles, stunning views out to Dasia island and plenty of space, it’s ideal for all types of travellers.

  • Hovolo Beach – The photos don’t even do Hovolo justice, you really have to see this place with your own eyes. It’s a bit less accessible than most of the others on this list which means there are fewer people, just wear appropriate footwear (rock shoes would be ideal) and be careful not to slip.
  • Limnonari Beach – My eyes almost fell out of my head as I drove into Limnonari, the view from the road as you wind around overlooking the bay is mind-blowing. There were lots of families here but there’s a beach bar with an adults-only area if that’s more your vibe (read more below).

  • Kastani Beach – Perhaps an unpopular opinion but Kastani wasn’t my favourite beach on the island, it was gorgeous of course but the crowds were off-putting for me. Still epic to see and all Mamma Mia tours stop there (hence the crowds) but if you’re looking for somewhere to spend the afternoon then choose elsewhere.
  • Amarandos Cove – Insanely blue water with pine trees stretching down into the ocean, Amarandos is a bit tricky to get to (easier for those with quad bikes) but it’s worth the journey if you decide to make it.
  • Panormos Beach – A beautiful pebble beach with a bunch of tavernas and cafes dotted around it, great for a lunch stop with a swim afterwards.

Beach clubs

For those who like to add good tunes and party vibes to their beach holiday, there are a few beach clubs around the island serving up happy hour cocktails and epic views at the same time.

Some popular beach clubs in Skopelos are:

  • Milia Beach Bar – beautifully clear water, great snorkelling and some water sports
  • Limnonari Apanemo Beach Bar – a stunning bay with a sophisticated beach bar that includes an adults-only pool
  • Kastani Beach Bar – loads of loungers (on both grass and sand) and other amenities, plus a decent food and drink menu
  • Glysteri Beach Bar – a more upmarket beach bar option with good music, comfortable sunbeds and top-rated service

Expect to pay around 10-15EUR for a pair of shaded sunbeds, and some beach bars have a minimum food/drink consumption in the busy season

See the monasteries

Beyond the wonderfully picturesque beaches and charming old town, Skopelos is also home to several historically significant monasteries hidden amongst the hills.

Each of the monasteries offers a unique glimpse into the island’s past and present culture, and when you see the views from them you’ll understand why those spots were chosen!

Please note that the monasteries are sometimes open for visitors but often this is dependent on who is around rather than a specific schedule, so don’t be disappointed if they’re closed when you get there. Take something to cover your shoulders and knees if you do want to go inside.

Some of the best monasteries to visit are:

  • Monastery of Evangelistria
  • Monastery of Agios Riginos
  • Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa
  • Monastery of Timios Prodromos
  • Monastery of Sotiras Christos
  • Monastery of the Metamorphosis

Skopelos’ diverse terrain offers numerous hiking trails that cater to all levels.

There are plenty of easy trails along the gorgeous coastline, or for a more challenging trek the Monasteries Tour is a 7.4km moderate-difficulty loop track along paths that connect ancient monasteries and historical settlements, or the hike up Palouki Peak offers divine views after a bit of a slog to get there.

There’s a guided hiking tour for those of you who’d prefer to hike with a guide.

Rent a boat

Renting a boat in Skopelos offers the freedom to explore its stunning coastline at your own pace. Discover secluded coves, swim in crystal-clear waters, and even visit nearby uninhabited islands (be sure to check any local regulations to protect wildlife).

Boat rentals are available online or you can organise them at the main port, with options ranging from small motorboats to larger yachts, and many do not require a boating license.

Indulge in local cuisine

There’s plenty of places to eat in Skopelos, and because it’s less of a touristy island, the value for money is brilliant.

My favourite spots are:

  • El Atrio (my absolute top recommendation)
  • First Creperie and Pizzerie (fantastic pasta)
  • SPIRA Brewery
  • Plateia for a super cute dinner setting
  • Magali for cheap and cheerful gyros
  • Paraporti and Vrachos for cocktails
  • Decimo for a delicious brunch and great WiFi

MORE ABOUT SKOPELOS GREECE

Skopelos island is a wonderful island of the Sporades that stands out for its lush vegetation, its exotic beaches, and its picturesque villages. Villages like the main Town and Glossa boast a unique traditional architecture that makes them incredibly photogenic. At these locations, you’ll find a great selection of hotels, shops and traditional taverns where you can taste the local delicacies! Apart from the charming settlements, there are numerous beaches with crystal clear cobalt waters, such as Stafylos, Panormos and Elios. A drive along the island’s coastline, though, will get you to many secluded beaches as well.

Thanks to its proximity to other islands of the Sporades island group, it is a great base for island hopping . Popular island-hopping itineraries are from Skopelos to Skiathos and from Skopelos to Alonissos.

The most popular site on the island is hands down the church of Agios Ioannis in Kastri. That’s because the wedding scenes of Mamma Mia movie were shot there. These days, many tourists visit the church of Agios Ioannis to marvel at the romantic setting!

Whether you’re after relaxing holidays or adventurous ones, Skopelos will bewitch you!

Backup goalie Casey DeSmith helps give Canucks a 2-1 series lead over Predators

Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers (left) bats the puck away from crossing the goal line after it got past goaltender Casey DeSmith during the second period against the Predators on Saturday. Fellow blue liner Filip Hronek also gave chase.

NASHVILLE — Backup goalie Casey DeSmith finally has his first postseason victory, and he helped the Vancouver Canucks take back home-ice advantage in the process.

DeSmith made 30 saves as the Canucks held off the Nashville Predators, 2-1, Friday night for a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven series to open the NHL playoffs.

“It couldn’t come at a better time,” DeSmith said of his first playoff victory. “I was really disappointed with how I played the other night. I thought the team played great the other night and didn’t get the result they deserved. And tonight I thought we really brought it. We earned that one. So it means a lot.”

This was DeSmith’s second straight start and third all-time in the playoffs with Thatcher Demko out since the series opener with an injury. DeSmith gave up three goals on 15 shots as Vancouver lost Game 2.

“His demeanor is just great for that role,” Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said.

J.T. Miller had a power-play goal and an assist, and Brock Boeser’s power-play goal wound up the game-winner. Quinn Hughes had two assists.

Game 4 is Sunday in Nashville.

Luke Evangelista helped Nashville avoid being shut out as he put a wrister top-shelf with 3:12 remaining. Coach Andrew Brunette took his timeout with 2:10 left and pulled goalie Juuse Saros. Nashville couldn’t get the puck past DeSmith again.

Brunette said it was a fun game and credited the Canucks with defending well.

“Like I said, the whole series is going to be muddy,” Brunette said. “It’s going to be hard. And we still got to do a better job getting inside.”

The Canucks became the first team to win a playoff game with only 12 shots on goal since Pittsburgh beat Nashville in Game 1 of the 2017 Stanley Cup final.

Vancouver went 2 for 3 on the power play and held Nashville scoreless on five advantages. The Predators are just 1 for 14 in this series on the power play. Brunette said they have to move the puck faster and work harder to get closer to the net against the Canucks’ bigger defensemen.

Predators captain Roman Josi said they have to get more movement with the man advantage.

“Their box doesn’t move much, so I think we’ve got to get some movement and then just get some shots through, maybe get a dirty goal, a tip, or just a rebound,” Josi said. “That’s definitely one thing we need to be better.

The Predators fell to 11-4 in Game 3s on home ice, and this was their second straight loss. They lost Game 3 when they were swept by Colorado in 2022.

When Jankowski failed to clear a puck on the penalty kill, Miller, who had 103 points in the regular season, scored his first goal this postseason with 6:37 left for a 1-0 lead on their first shot on net.

Boeser put the Canucks up, 2-0, with his power-play goal at 4:33, tipping the puck past Saros  from in front off a pass  from Miller.

The Canucks goalie also made a  nice stop at the right post in the third  on Cole Smith to preserve the shutout. He had help as the Canucks blocked 30 shots after Nashville matched a playoff franchise-record by blocking 30 shots in regulation to win Game 2.

“We had some big blocks tonight,” Boeser said.
