New York City's Koreatown: The Complete Guide

Where to Eat And Drink

Karaoke and nightlife, tips for your visit.

While some parts of New York City do in fact sleep, Koreatown isn't one of them. Among Manhattan's buzziest districts thanks to a nearly 24-hour restaurant and nightlife scene, Koreatown's compact heart is situated on 32nd Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, but many distinctly Korean businesses also extend several blocks east, west, and south. And as with South Korea's metropolises of Seoul and Busan, you'll find restaurants, bars, beauty salons and other businesses and attractions tucked into all levels of its multi-floor buildings.

From New York's number one destination for buying K-Pop merchandise to soju concoctions served in a hollowed out watermelon to the Korean delicacy gopchang (intestine barbecue), you'll find these and plenty of hidden gems in this guide.

While there are plenty of eats to be found, Korean barbecue is a major draw and nearly ubiquitous. Many restaurants added enclosed (and semi-enclosed) outdoor seating areas in 2020, effectively doubling their capacity, although these only offer portable stoves for cooking at your table (the meat comes out almost entirely pre-cooked, but you can still get a bit of sear from the grill). Some popular (and good!) spots include The Kunjip (request a table by the window upstairs if ordering barbecue) and the NYC flagship of chain Baekjeong , owned by a famous South Korean comedian Kang Ho Dong (a poster depicts him climbing the Empire State Building) and distinguished by its tasty, gooey cheese and corn kernel accompaniment, and celebrity clientele (Chris Rock, Momofuku's David Chang, the late Anthony Bourdain and plenty of Korean singers, actors, and chefs among them).

For an authentic, old school barbecue experience, the multi-level New Wonjo offers charcoal grills on its upper floor (plus views of Koreatown's main strip). Watching the staff deposit a canister of piping hot orange charcoal into your table's pit is a reliable bit of drama, and adds a smokiness you don't get with gas or electric grills. The included selection of banchan (side dishes) is eclectic and can range from creamy potato salad to raw crab segments and of, course, kimchi.

Another barbecue spot, Gopchang Story , offers the delicacy of gopchang : intestines. Try the combo for a mix of small and large intestines and their respective textures and flavors, and definitely add on the optional, addictive fried rice with cheese, prepared afterwards on the same skillet (there are also non-intestine meat and seafood dishes for the offal-averse).

Billing itself as a more modern, almost disco take on barbecue (with a live DJ no less), Love also serves up shareable dishes like "bangin' bulgogi kimchi fries" and "Whip it Good Army Stew," their version of budae jjigae, which came to be right after the Korean War and incorporates spam, cheese, and other ingredients left behind by US troops, plus kimchi, tofu, rice cakes, ramen noodles, and more. Army Stew is a favorite at funky, atmospheric second floor bar Pocha 32 , although its most famous for inventive, delicious, photogenic, and dangerously easy to scarf down shareable soju creations including the Watermelon Punch (a half-watermelon filled with soju, lemon-up soda, and crushed ice), Pineapple Punch, and Yogurt Soju.

Meanwhile, Rib No. 7 takes a more upscaled and refined approach to its menu of Korean staples, as does Gaonnuri - located on the 39th floor of Nomad Tower, its panoramic city views are a major draw—and Her Name is Han brings hipster flair to its homestyle, seasonal creations, plus boutiquey decor and vibes straight out of Seoul's Hannam-dong. Vegetarians should pass through the wooden doors of HanGawi , a meat-free culinary and atmospheric sanctuary dripping with Korean tradition and zen (shoes must be removed upon entering, so socks are recommended).

Don't forget dessert! Mochi Mochi Donut serves chewy mochi donuts made with glutinous rice flour in an assortment of colorful flavors, while Cafe Grace Street offers a wide array of indulgent treats, from silky shaved snow towers to custardy, caramelized burnt cheesecake to a coffee with—made famous in "Squid Game"— dalgona honeycomb candy with a heart shape to eat around (don't break it!).

Although you'll need to visit the Flushing, Queens area for a large-scale jjimjilbang (Korean spa) experience at the sprawling Spa Castle complex (which includes gender-designated wet areas, co-ed dry saunas, swimming pools and hydrotherapy, food, full service scrubs and massage, and resting areas), there are intimate, under-the-radar spa facilities in Koreatown. Open 24 hours, the two-floor Asian-European fusion Juvenex Spa features a semi-precious stone Jade Igloo sauna, diamond herbal glass steam room, Japanese-style soaking ponds filled with sake, ginseng, and other medicinal ingredients, while the treatment menu is expansive - scrubs, facials, massage - with plenty of packages and female beauty-centric options (e.g. "Luxurious Luscious Lips"). Note that from 7am-5pm daily the fifth floor is women only, and bathing suit optional, and bathing suits are mandatory during co-ed hours (and on the 4th always co-ed floor).

A mecca for K-pop fans, Koryo Books stocks NYC's largest selection of CDs, DVDs, and merchandise, including brand new releases within a day or two of their South Korea street dates (many come with free posters). BTS, Blackpink, Nu'est, Enhypen, Red Velvet, Shinee, and dozens if not hundreds additional boy/girl groups and artists are stocked. Koryo also carries plenty of Korean language books, magazines, home and gift items, and more.

Cosmetic and skincare products can be found at neighboring/connected store Kosette, as well as Besfren Beauty —which stocks over 60 Korean brands including its own—and aptly named, eclectic The Face Shop , the latter also stocking merchandise related to characters from Korea's chat app Kakao and pop group BTS.

Most if not all karaoke bars are located on upper floors around Ktown, and some quite hidden away. Opened since 2004, the bi-level Maru Karaoke Lounge requires a freight elevator to access, and features both a glowing tunnel-like bar straight out of a Stanley Kubrick sci-fi flick and private karaoke rooms (standard time limit is 2 hours, exceptions made by request). 32 Karaoke is a rarity - it's BYOB! - and you can search its 30,000 song library in advance online . Gagopa , from the same owners, does stock booze (with a BYO option).

There are a couple of buzzing rooftop bars around Ktown to check out as well: Cloud Social and the Arlo Nomad hotel's Arlo Roof Top .

  • Hotel NYMA is smack dab in Koreatown's heart and home to Cloud Social Rooftop Bar, and guests can book a room with complimentary welcome drinks.
  • Be sure to reserve restaurants and karaoke rooms especially on weekends, which are perpetually bustling.
  • While restaurant prices can seem steep, especially for barbecue, lunchtime sees fantastic, affordable specials and combination deals.

Learn more about South Korea

Geograhy and environment.

South Korea is located at the south end of the Korean Peninsula, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. Separated from   Japan   by the Korean Strait and demarcated from the state of North Korea by Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), South Korea's terrain is a mix of flat lowlands and forested mountains. The coasts of South Korea are rocky and jagged, with thousands of islands (mostly inhabitable) scattered off the coastline.

Culture and customs

South Korea draws some traditions and customs from other neighboring countries in Asia, with a culture that stems from Confucianism. This system of philosophical and ethical teachings was introduced to South Korea in the 4 th century through Chinese scholars and was quickly embraced by the wider population until it officially became the state ideology in the early 1900s.

Confucianism emphasizes respect for aging, elders and ancestors, an intrinsic hierarchy that runs through work and social life, and upholds traditional family roles so you’ll often see families living together in one house.

During your travels around South Korea, you’ll also see plenty of traditions such as the act of bowing when greeting people, women wearing traditional dress (hanbok) and the practice of taekwondo (Korean martial arts). As well as ancient beliefs, new generations of South Koreans are embracing a modernized culture, one full of K-pop, Korean cosmetics and popular foods like kimchi and tteokbokki.

History and government

South Korea’s had an often turbulent history dating back to around 8000 BC when it was known as just Korea, but the country’s most impactful conflict began in the 1500s with the attempted Japanese invasion. Korea went on to become a Japanese colony in 1910 following its annexation of the Korean Empire, which ended in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II.

The country was then divided into two parts, the northern part which was protected by the Soviet Union and the southern part which was protected largely by the United States. Both the northern and southern parts of Korea officially became North and South Korea in 1948 when the two regions failed to agree on forming one, united government.

In 1950, North Korea set in motion the Korean War which was intended to unify the two countries under communism. But after much destruction to infrastructure and loss of human life, a cease-fire was called in 1953 with both countries signing the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The two countries have since agreed to work towards a final settlement (The Peace Treaty on the Korean Peninsula) to formally and officially end the Korean War.

South Korea now enjoys a fully prosperous economy with a capital economic standing similar to that of countries such as the United States, Japan, and various countries in Western Europe.

You can’t go to South Korea for shopping and not stop in Seoul – the country’s premier destination for all things fashion, electronics, street food and skincare. In this shopper’s paradise of a city, you’ll find traditional Korean items perfect for souvenirs to tech gadgets not yet available on Australia’s shores.

Some notable districts/destinations where you can shop ‘til you drop include:

  • Myeongdong (shopping district)
  • Dongdaemun Market (shopping center)
  • Cheongdam-dong (luxury boutique area)
  • Pyeonghwa (wholesale market)

Top 5 culinary delicacies of South Korea

1. bibimbap.

As one of Korea's standout dishes, bibimbap is a tasty concoction of meat, vegetables, egg, and rice. Soy sauce, chili paste, garlic, and sesame oil all add flavor to this amazingly colorful dish found everywhere in Korea.

Kimchi is hailed as a nutritional powerhouse - packing a healthy punch of nutrients, vitamins, and beneficial bacteria that makes it one of the world's healthiest superfoods. But most people don't eat these fermented vegetables for health reasons - it's the uniquely, tasty flavor and versatility that makes kimchi so popular in Korean cooking.

These delicious, savory pancakes are a standard of Korean cuisine. With hundreds of different varieties, jeon can be served with red meat, chicken, seafood, vegetables, tofu, and even edible flowers.

Similar to sushi, these highly popular rice-based morsels feature fish, beef, or crab, wrapped in seaweed with pickled or fresh vegetables. Available all over Korea, they are the perfect snack on the run or quick, cheap lunch to enjoy between sightseeing.

Arriving in Korea by the way of Mongolia, mandu are essentially boiled, steamed, or pan-fried dumplings. A cheap, street food favorite, mandu can be filled with everything from pheasant to tofu, cucumber, beef, and beyond. Try out these foods on our 8 day South Korea Real Food Adventure.

Ukraine-Russia war: Putin sets conditions for ceasefire - but Ukraine says it is 'complete sham'

Vladimir Putin has promised a ceasefire if Ukraine withdraws its troops from occupied regions, saying Russia would be ready for talks "tomorrow". But Ukraine has dismissed his remarks as a "complete sham", while the US has said Moscow is in "no position" to dictate.

Russia has increasingly centralised their command and control of irregular forces, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

Irregular military is any non-standard military component that is distinct from a country's national armed forces.

In February 2023, Russia established its Volunteer Corps, uniting over 20,000 volunteers, reservists, mercenaries and ex-convicts, who serve in numerous irregular units.

Since then, more irregular forces have been deployed in Ukraine, mainly as light infantry units which, according to the MoD, "lack integrated artillery or air support".

As a result of this, the MoD says Russia's irregular forces have likely sustained proportionally higher casualty rates than Russia's regular units over the last nine months.

Ukraine is planning record power imports today following significant infrastructure damage by Russian missile attacks, Ukrainian power grid operator Ukrenergo said.

Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's energy sector have intensified since March, resulting in blackouts in many regions.

This has forced Kyiv to start large-scale electricity imports from the EU.

A ministry statement said the country would import 31,904 megawatt hours (MWh) of power today versus the previous record of 29,796 MWh on Wednesday.

We have been reporting today on comments made by Vladimir Putin at Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs meeting.

Now, John Foreman, who served as UK defence attache in Moscow from 2019 to 2022, has reminded people to keep the words issued by Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas in 2022 in mind.

At the Munich Security Conference, Ms Kallas had explained Soviet negotiating tactics and noted it was important to "keep that in mind all the time".

She said if the West were to consider offering Russia something when it made demands then Moscow "would get something that [it] didn't have before".

Quoting Soviet-time foreign minister Andrei Gromyko, she noted that he had said negotiation tactics of the Soviet Union involved three things.

"First, demand the maximum," she said.

"Do not ask, but demand something that has never been yours.

"Second, present ultimatums.

"And third, do not give up one inch in negotiations because there will always be people in the West who will offer you something.

"And then in the end you will have one third or even half of something you didn't have before. So we have to keep that in mind all the time."

Vladimir Putin's ceasefire offer cannot be trusted, the Ukrainian president has said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned the Russian president would not stop his offensive, even if his demands were met.

His comments on the sidelines of the G7 summit come after Mr Putin set out a list of requirements he wants Ukraine to meet before negotiations can begin.

These included Ukraine giving up its plans to join NATO and its troops withdrawing from the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

By Ivor Bennett , Moscow correspondent

As ever with Vladimir Putin, timing is everything.

It's no coincidence this speech was made on the eve of the Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland.

Russia won't be there as it hasn't been invited. So this was about putting Moscow's side across first and undermining the summit's legitimacy before it's even begun.

Is his peace proposal credible? Not according to Ukraine or the West - Kyiv, NATO and the Pentagon have already all dismissed it.

But the Kremlin sees things very differently, or at least pretends to.

"We didn't start the war," Russia's president said. "It was the Kyiv regime."

According to Mr Putin, Russia is the victim. Hence why he says Ukraine must withdraw its troops from the regions Russia occupies, rather than the other way around.

In reality, he knows these conditions are not something Kyiv will ever agree to. Ceding territory is a red line for Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

But that doesn't matter to Mr Putin. This was more about seizing the initiative ahead of the Switzerland summit, where Mr Zelenskyy will be centre stage.

As for relations with the West, they are "close to the point of no return", he said.

What does that mean exactly?

There was no mention of nuclear weapons this time but it was a bleak assessment nonetheless and one that many in the West might agree with.

It's fair to say relations between Russia and the West have taken a sharp turn for the worse in recent days.

We've had new threats, new sanctions, and new military manoeuvres.

Then yesterday, to top it off, the G7's $50bn loan deal for Ukraine using frozen Russian assets - a deal Mr Putin called "theft" that will prompt a retaliation.

We don't know what the response will be yet but it's likely to involve the seizure of private US assets in Russia - something that's already been discussed in Moscow. Last month Mr Putin signed a decree outlining how it would work.

It all gives the sense that we're suddenly moving more quickly along the path to possible escalation. And it makes one wonder - where will this end?

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin says Vladimir Putin is not in a position to be telling Ukraine what it must do to achieve peace.

Mr Putin said Russia would be ready for peace talks "tomorrow" if Ukraine agreed to his demands.

Those include the immediate withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions and the assurance that Ukraine will give up on its plans to join NATO.

Mr Austin argued that Putin could end the war today if he wants to and called on the Russian president to withdraw his troops from Ukrainian territory.

"He is not in any position to dictate to Ukraine what they must do to bring about peace," Mr Austin told reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Turkey will tell leaders at this weekend's peace summit in Switzerland that a meeting with both Kyiv and Moscow present will yield more results, a Turkish diplomatic source has said.

Foreign minister Hakan Fidan will join world leaders at the summit, to which Russia is not invited, to reportedly reiterate Turkey's call for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.

NATO ally Turkey has sought to maintain good ties with both Kyiv and Moscow during the war, offering to host peace talks or mediate.

"(Fidan) will point out that a summit that all sides attend has a higher probability of yielding results," the source told Reuters.

Turkey supports Ukraine's territorial integrity and provides it with military support, but also opposes Western sanctions on Moscow.

Finland suspects that four Russian military planes violated the country's airspace this month, the Finnish Border Guard has said.

On Monday, the Finnish defence ministry said it suspected a single Russian military plane of violating the airspace above the Gulf of Finland for about two minutes.

But the border guard agency has now said: "As the investigation progresses, it has become apparent that in addition to the one Russian plane reported earlier, there is also reason to suspect three other planes of territorial infringement."

The four aircraft were believed to be two bombers and two fighter jets, reaching some 1.6 miles into Finnish airspace near the city of Loviisa.

"Of course, if these kinds of airspace violations happen, and if they are deliberate and serious, we react to them but the investigation is ongoing and the Border Guard is in charge of it," Finland's chief of defence Janne Jaakkola told Reuters.

The peace terms offered to Ukraine by Vladimir Putin today are a "complete sham", according to one of Volodymyr Zelenskyy's advisers.

The Russian president said his country would be ready for peace talks "tomorrow" if Ukrainian troops withdraw from the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions and if Ukraine gave up its plans to join NATO.

Mykhailo Podolyak said Mr Putin's comments showed "no novelty... no real peace proposals and no desire to end the war".

"But there is a desire not to pay for this war and to continue it in new formats," he wrote on X.

"It's all a complete sham. Therefore - once again - get rid of illusions and stop taking seriously the 'proposals of Russia' that are offensive to common sense."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to liberate all occupied regions from Russian control - and himself said all Russian forces must leave Ukraine as a condition for any peace deal.

North Korea has sent containers to Russia that could hold nearly five million artillery shells, South Korea's defence minister has said.

Speaking to Bloomberg News, Shin Wosnik said that Seoul had detected at least 10,000 shipping containers on their way to Russia.

In return, Russia has reportedly sent North Korea technology to help in its plans to destroy spy satellites as well as conventional arms.

"Putin is expected to seek closer security cooperation with North Korea, especially military supplies such as artillery shells that are necessary to seize a chance to win," Shin said.

Vladimir Putin is expected to visit Pyongyang in the coming days to meet Kim Jong-un.

The North Korean leader visited Russia last September and is believed to have agreed a deal with Mr Putin that saw Moscow receive armaments in return for technological support for North Korea's space programme.
