For example, consider hitting the Grand View Point Overlook, Green River Overlook, or the White Rim Overlook for a gentle trail and stellar views. For the most ambitious and adventurous, combine your visit with the Arches National Park .

11 Red Travel Destinations For Your Bucket List

Sustainable travel expert, adventure seeker

Chicago, IL, USA

red 24 travel

Ah, the rich color of red. Often associated with love and romance (or anger for a stark contrast!), this hue is undeniably bold and assertive regardless of what it denotes. But when it comes to traveling the world, the color red offers an entirely different experience. Cherry-colored lakes and ornate temples drenched in scarlet are just the tip of the flame when it comes to this bucket list of colorful places . It turns out that “seeing red” is anything but negative when looking at these awe-inspiring destinations. Try these 11 red places on for size:

Lake Natron, Tanzania

Lake Natron,

There’s nothing quite like a mineral-rich soda lake on a hot day, eh? Despite sounding totally drinkable, Lake Natron ’s wow-worthy rosy waters are best experienced with the eyes (and from a bird’s eye view !). Nearby, you’ll find waterfalls and flamingos, since they happen to have made the area their breeding ground. To make things even more interesting: The lake is nestled at the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai — an active volcano in Tanzania’s Rift Valley. What I’m trying to say is, it’s hardcore as hell.

Panjin Red Beach, China

红海滩, Panjin

If you took a regular beach, put it in the upside down from Stranger Things , but then subtracted all of the scary stuff — I imagine it would look like this. Without any sand or blue waters, it’s a bit confusing as to why Panjin Red Beach has the name it does. Either way, this wetland and reed march is the world’s largest and provides stunning sights thanks to the Sueda plants that turn it a vibrant shade of red in autumn.

Red Fort, India

Red Fort, New Delhi

This reddish-brown palace fort is replete with impressive archways, minarets that extend into the sky, and enough rich history to make it feel like a museum. As the main residence of the Mughal Emperors back in the 1600s, Red Fort is a fascinating piece of the past in the center of bustling Delhi. It took 8 years, 10 months, and 25 days to build — which explains why it’s so grand. I have to hand it to them; I really like what they did with the place.

La Tomatina Festival, Spain

red 24 travel

“Is this one a reach?” I asked myself as I scrawled it down on this list. No, it’s not; I later decided. Possibly the most puzzling on the list and definitely the messiest, La Tomatina Festival is Spain’s favorite way of having a food fight. This festival in Valencia is pretty simple: It’s a massive tomato-fueled extravaganza purely for the sake of entertainment. A glimpse at the photos and videos from past events shows just how riotous it gets, presumably leading folks to take a break from the red fruit afterwards.

Laguna Colorada, Bolivia

Laguna Colorada, Laguna Colorada

While it may look like a terrifying crime scene upon first glance, Bolivia’s Laguna Colorada is a shallow salt lake with a strikingly red color due to algae. It’s absolutely the opposite of what we’ve grown up thinking about lakes — and that’s exactly what makes it so damn cool. Not only is it enticing in its unique saturation, it’s also teeming with pink flamingos. Of course, right? It truly looks like a trippy Salvador Dali painting.

Hitachi Seaside Park, Japan

Hitachi Seaside Park, Hitachinaka

In Japan’s Ibaraki Prefecture, anything is possible. And by “anything” I mean a beautiful public park filled with precisely 32,000 bright red pom pom-like plants known as Kochia . Depending on the time of the year you visit, they’ll either be blue or red, making it one of the most vibrant and colorful places in the world . The candy-colored landscape even holds a festival known as the Kochia Carnival, celebrating the new hues for the fall season.

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

Valley of Fire State Park, Overton

Thanks to ever-changing sand dunes from 150 million years ago, we now have the Valley of Fire : a swirly landscape of orangey-red Aztec sandstone formations just 150 miles from Grand Canyon National Park . If soft-serve ice cream could become petrified, this is most definitely what it would look like. It’s also a super short drive south from Las Vegas, so if you are planning a trip to Sin City , you can try your luck on a slot machine and drown your woes in natural beauty when you inevitably lose a bunch of cash!

Moulin Rouge, France

Moulin Rouge, Léchelle

A cherry-red windmill marks the territory of Moulin Rouge : France’s world famous cabaret that dates back to 1889. Years of can-can dancing, champagne-fueled gatherings, and musical dance entertainment has drawn visitors from around the globe. These red walls and moody lowlights are smooth as can be — making you wish you could experience it back in the early days, too.

Zhangye National Geopark, China

Zhangye, Zhangye

Although it’s the most prominent color, China’s Zhangye National Park contains much more than red alone. Countless hues are strewn about, none of which you’d imagine would be on your average mountain. This puzzling sight in the Guangdong province is a result of deposits of sandstone coupled with other minerals, resulting in a kaleidoscope of colors. It looks like someone went wild with a paintbrush.

Fisherman’s Huts, Norway

Lofoten, Lofoten

Waaay up on the northwestern coast of Norway lies Lofoten : An archipelago of dramatically sloping mountains, shimmering dark blue waters, and the cutest little red cabins. These seaside wooden huts are traditional to the area, and there are plenty that you can stay in during a visit. They’re cozy as can be, and the all-red exterior makes for an excellent contrast with the landscape.

Red Square, Russia

Red Square, Moskva

Welcome to Moscow! The beautiful and historic Red Square marks the intersection of the Kremlin (the executive branch of the government), the former royal citadel, and the president of Russia’s official residence. Oh-so intricate architecture makes it a massive-scaled work of art. P.S. I may or may not have Googled “do people actually drink Moscow mules in Moscow” while writing this. Spoiler alert: They do not; the cocktail was invented in Connecticut. The more you know.

Watch: protesters dragged off after storming 18th green at 2024 travelers championship as final group finishes, share this article.

A wild scene unfolded late Sunday at the 2024 Travelers Championship.

Numerous fans stormed the 18th green as the final group was lining up their putts at TPC River Highlands, throwing smoke bombs and other objects on the green. CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz said it looked as if four people had been handcuffed within a few seconds of rushing the green.

Scottie Scheffler was lining up a birdie putt from just off the green, and Tom Kim had a birdie putt from 10 feet away to tie Scheffler when the incident happened.

Police quickly corralled the fans who rushed the green as officials worked quickly to clean up the green.

The group Extinction Rebellion is claiming responsibility for the protest, saying it was not protesting any individual or organization but the worldwide danger of climate breakdown.

The final grouping was able to finish the 18th hole, but before the playoff with Kim and Scheffler, the hole was recut toward the front of the green to avoid the area where the protesters were.

Cheaper flights, 'coolcations' and ChatGPT: 8 summer travel trends for 2024

Jordan Waller

Summer 2024 is shaping up to be a dynamic (and busy) travel season, and as always, we're seeing new approaches to how people vacation.

From pop culture influences to the welcome return of cheap flight deals, how we travel is changing and becoming smarter and more efficient than ever.

Whether you're a seasoned jet-setter or planning your first big trip this summer, here are the top summer travel trends for 2024 that you need to know.

The return of cheap flights

red 24 travel

The last two summers have seen travelers wrestle with sky-high airfares, but we may have finally reached a turning point. At TPG, we've recently seen an influx of bargain cash and points fares to numerous international destinations from the United States.

Recent deals on our radar include business-class award redemptions to Europe from 50,000 miles as well as round-trip cash fares to Europe for less than $400 — and these offers don't appear to be mere one-offs. Alongside late summer offerings, we're also already seeing a steady slew of good early prices for fall and winter.

This is likely due to a mix of factors, perhaps one of which is an increase in consumer confidence following a gloomy few months as we reached what was hopefully the peak of the cost-of-living crisis. Additionally, the total number of seats available on flights has increased (compared to 2022, the number of open seats on domestic flights is up 14%, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium), and has potentially contributed to the frequency of deals.

Mix all of this with an abundance of high-profile global events happening this year, such as Taylor Swift touring across the world and the Paris Olympics, and it appears airlines have been spurred to compete with each other by slashing prices in a bid to get more bums on seats.

It remains to be seen whether the current boom of lower prices will last, but right now, things are looking optimistic.

A summer of sports

The summer of 2024 is packed with major sporting events — particularly in Europe — which will attract fans and travelers from around the globe.

red 24 travel

Most notably, the Summer Olympics will take place in Paris from July 26 to Aug. 11, followed by the Paralympics between Aug. 28 and Sept. 8 — some hotels are already sold out and booking fees are skyrocketing.

The UEFA Euro 2024 soccer tournament also kicked off last Friday in Germany. It will run for a whole month, and the final game will be held at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on July 14.

The summer will also see the Tour de France (which will start in Italy) from June 29 to July 21, the Wimbledon tennis tournament in London from July 1 to July 14 and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup (a cricket tournament), which will be co-hosted by the United States and West Indies.

In addition to travelers buying plane tickets and booking hotels to see these events, this year's jam-packed sports schedule may be indirectly influencing how travelers choose their holidays, too. Airbnb reported a 122% increase in searches within its "Play" category, which reflects a growing interest in the company's offerings of active and playful stays this summer.

'Set-jetting' is more popular than ever

red 24 travel

Streaming also continues to influence travel choices. According to the Unpack '24 survey by Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo, more than half of travelers are inspired to research or book a trip after seeing a destination featured in a show or movie.

This trend, known as set-jetting, has brought increased awareness of an array of global destinations. Popular vacation spots expected to be particularly busy this year include Thailand (which will be featured in the third season of "The White Lotus"), Romania (featured in the second season of "Wednesday"), Paris (thanks to "Emily in Paris") and South Korea (following the success of "Squid Game").

ChatGPT is working overtime

Artificial intelligence is now an integral part of travel planning, whether you are using it intentionally or if it's quietly powering search and planning tools in the background. A recent survey by Booking.com found that 48% of families are planning to use AI tools like ChatGPT to help organize their trips in 2024.

Though, in our experience, tools like ChatGPT are best used only as rough guides at this point, AI is continuing to affect the way we travel. Earlier this year, Expedia launched its own AI-driven travel tool, Romie , which is now available via Expedia's iOS app in the U.S. and can help create personalized itineraries, warn of trip disruptions and summarize group chats to organize your vacation.

Though we're still at the dawn of how AI will influence travel, this may be the year when AI travel planning will become the norm.

'Coolcations' are a thing now

red 24 travel

2023 went down in history books as the hottest year on record, and 2024 could continue the trend of soaring annual temperatures.

According to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service , last May marked 12 consecutive months of record-breaking global temperatures. With rising summer temperatures comes the increased risks of wildfires (as we saw last year in places such as Greece and Hawaii ) and flooding.

On a smaller scale, it is simply unpleasant and uncomfortable to travel when it's too hot. So, it comes as no surprise that Booking.com recently reported that 74% of families globally cite air conditioning as the most important amenity when booking accommodations. The travel industry as a whole has also seen a rise in "coolcations," where travelers prioritize destinations and stays that can offer a respite from the heat.

Popular coolcation destinations for 2024 include Copenhagen, Latvia, Finland, the Scottish Highlands, Estonia and the Azores. Travelers are also flocking to traditional summer destinations like Greece in cooler months, when the temperatures begin to dip.

Taylor Swift is revolutionizing 'gig-tripping'

red 24 travel

In 2024, going to a concert or music festival is no longer just about buying a ticket and turning up at your nearest venue — it's about splashing the cash on flights and hotels and turning it into the pop music-tinged vacation your teenage self always dreamed about.

For example, Taylor Swift's "The Eras Tour" is crossing Europe this summer with key stops in the U.K., Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Poland, prompting a rush of ticket sales and hotel bookings at every stop. Many destinations on the tour saw hotels fully booked as early as last December. That said, many Americans realized that it could be more economical to fly to Europe to catch the tour than to pay the going rate for resold tickets in the U.S.

If you're planning a European trip this summer, it's worth checking in advance to ensure that Taylor isn't passing through during your travel dates. But if she is, you could plan to catch her show at a relative bargain.

Hotels still reign supreme

It might seem like all you ever hear on TikTok and Instagram is influencers shouting from the hills about their latest Airbnb find, but in 2024, hotel accommodations still reign supreme when it comes to bookings.

According to Statista Market Insights , hotel bookings have dominated vacation rentals in the share of revenue in 2024, taking 55.6% of the share in the United States alone — vacation rentals, on the other hand, accounted for just 10%, the rest is split between camping, cruises and other types of package vacations. It's a similar picture across Europe and in the U.K., where hotels encompass 53.6% of revenue and vacation rentals 11.7%. The highest hotel market share appeared in Japan, at a whopping 62.3% (hotels) versus 11.9% (vacation rentals).

red 24 travel

This is likely due to a variety of factors, including service reliability — hotels are generally much more consistent than vacation rentals. Then, there's been a regular stream of crackdowns on vacation rentals across the globe. Cities have tightened up handing out new property licenses in destinations such as Austria, Rome, Hawaii and even Palm Springs, California; the latter has capped the number of days a short-term property can be rented out at 26 days.

The results are in: Offering reliable service, diverse amenities and prime locations, hotels remain a staple for both leisure and business travel.

Sustainable travel takes center stage

red 24 travel

Sustainability is more than a buzzword — it's a movement. Travelers are increasingly seeking eco-friendly destinations and accommodations that prioritize environmental conservation.

According to Booking.com , 53% of travelers are looking for accommodations that blend comfort with innovative sustainability features.

Additionally, slow travel and train travel are gaining popularity as eco-conscious choices. You may remember that locomotive travel featured highly in our 2024 destinations list . And thanks to innovations in high-speed rail, it's now more possible than ever to cross entire countries by train for less effort than it would take to board a plane.

But it's not all about speed. We're also seeing increased interest in high-end train experiences such as Belmond's Eastern & Oriental Express and the opulent La Dolce Vita train by Orient Express, which cater to a more relaxed, refined and, of course, sustainable way of travel.

Bottom line

Summer 2024 is set to be an exciting time to be a traveler, and current trends reflect a wide range of preferences, interests, budgets and lifestyles.

This year, keep an eye out for AI-powered travel planning, a growing interest in sustainability, the return of summer flight deals and a stunning roster of great global events. No matter where you go this year, summer 2024 is set to be a hot one.

NASCAR race recap: Christopher Bell wins USA TODAY 301 New Hampshire after rain delay

LOUDON, N.H. — Christopher Bell outlasted the rain, darkness, repeated cautions and the rest of the field to win the 2024 USA TODAY 301 NASCAR Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway .

Bell, who also won Saturday’s Xfinity Series race, stood victorious in a race that lasted more than six hours after a rain delay that lasted 134 minutes and 14 cautions.

It marked Bell’s second win in five career starts at New Hampshire. He is now second in the NASCAR Cup Series standings with eight races remaining in the regular season.

Bell also won the first stage of the race after overtaking polesitter Chase Elliott on lap 43. Denny Hamlin then found the lead to end Stage 2, but heavy rain entered the track during the last stage and the field was equalized.

Drivers were forced onto wet tires for the last 80 or so laps that saw several spin-outs and wrecks due to tricky conditions.

Chase Briscoe finished second, Josh Berry came home third, Kyle Larson was fourth and Chris Buescher fifth.

Bubba Wallace involved in multi-car wreck

Another lap, another caution flag.

Noah Gragson lost control of his No. 10 Ford and collected the cars of both Austin Dillon and Bubba Wallace to produce a 10th caution flag at the 2024 USA TODAY 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Wallace was forced to retire.

It has been a tumultuous race filled with collisions, spin-outs and weather delays. Christopher Bell leads the pack from Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson.

USA TODAY 301 race restarts in New Hampshire

LOUDON, N.H. — We are back underway in Loudon. Tyler Reddick leads the pack at the 2024 USA TODAY 301 race with less than 80 laps remaining at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The race had been delayed for two hours and 14 minutes due to inclement weather. Crews worked to clear the track of standing water and teams switched cars to wet-weather ties, which are relatively new to NASCAR.

Moments before the race restarted, two-time NASCAR Series champion Kyle Busch, who was already having a rough day after multiple incidents, slammed into the outside wall under caution coming out of Turn 3. Busch had enough, climbing out of his Chevrolet and getting into the NASCAR safety truck as another truck towed his No. 8 Richard Childress Racing car off the track.

NASCAR trying to get New Hampshire race going again

LOUDON, N.H. — After a significant amount of rainfall at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, team crews and NASCAR staff are trying to get "The Magic Mile" back in racing shape to complete the USA TODAY 301.

Teams do have wet-weather tires available, and race officials have told teams to prepare the cars to use them. However, there is still a significant amount of water on the track. Puddles and spray could be an issue if the red flag gets lifted because the cars do not have windshield wipers.

Tyler Reddick would stand to be the race-winner as the leader after 219 laps if the race does not restart.

Race red-flagged due to weather

LOUDON, N.H. — The 2024 USA TODAY 301 was paused due to significant rain in the area on lap 220 of 301.

Tyler Reddick and his team are looking quite prudent, as the No. 45 23XI Racing team decided not to pit following Stage 2 in favor of track position with heavy rain creeping in on the area. He leads the race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway from Ryan Blaney and Denny Hamlin.

Hamlin is in an interesting spot, as he is a co-owner – along with Michael Jordan – of the No. 45 Toyota piloted by Reddick, but he could also be in position for the win should the race resume from Loudon, New Hampshire.

If NASCAR officials call the race early, Reddick would be the winner with the USA TODAY 301 becoming official once Stage 2 ended.

Keselowski makes contact with Truex

LOUDON, N.H. — Martin Truex Jr. got tipped from behind by Brad Keselowski early in stage 3 after a slow pit stop dropped him from among the leaders to mid pack. The contact caused damage to his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

Truex previously had a problem with his right rear tire on a pit stop and went from second to 26th position.

Meanwhile, Tyler Reddick leads from Denny Hamlin with less than 90 laps to go. Reddick did not pit after Stage 2, so fuel would be a concern if cautions and incoming storms do not shorten the race.

Slow stop burns Truex as storms inch closer

LOUDON, N.H. — Martin Truex Jr., at one point the race leader and second-place finisher in Stage 2, dropped to 26th on the restart after a slow pit stop while changing the right rear tire.

Others also chose to change tires during the break while some drivers elected to stay out, hoping the storms reach the track before their tires and/or fuel performance go under. With two stages complete, the race would be official if storms end the race early.

Tyler Reddick was the big winner, starting in front at the Stage 3 restart in front of Michael McDowell.

Meanwhile, Joey Logano experienced a lockup on the first lap of the Stage 3 restart and suffered damage to his car. Chase Elliott also took damage on the accident.

Denny Hamlin eyeing history at New Hampshire

LOUDON, N.H. — Denny Hamlin could be on the way to his fourth win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing driver started 14th and took advantage of the chaos caused by a flurry of cautions to win the second stage of the 2024 USA TODAY 301 race in Loudon, New Hampshire.

Martin Truex Jr. (second) is right on Hamlin's tail, followed by Joey Logano (third), Christopher Bell (fourth), Ryan Blaney (fifth), Todd Gilliland (sixth), Kyle Larson (seventh), Josh Berry (eighth), Chase Elliott (ninth) and Ross Chastain (10th).

A fourth win at New Hampshire would tie Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton for most wins at New Hampshire all time. It would also be Hamlin's fourth victory of the season, which would lead the series.

Cautions piling up in New Hampshire

LOUDON, N.H. — A pair of cautions in a matter of a few laps threw a wrench into the 2024 USA TODAY 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

First, a Daniel Hemric spin on lap 142 caused a flurry of activity in the pit lane. Just a few laps later, Kyle Busch hit the wall and brought out yet another caution flag late in the race's second stage.

Meanwhile, Alex Bowman suffered an engine problem during the caution laps for the Hemric incident and was forced to take his car to the garage.

Denny Hamlin led from Joey Logano with both Martin Truex Jr. and Christopher Bell close behind.

Martin Truex Jr. passes Bell on lap 138; weather looming

LOUDON, N.H. — Martin Truex Jr. overtook Christopher Bell on lap 138 of the 2024 USA TODAY 301 race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Truex started seventh and got the move done a few laps after both he and Bell made green-flag pit stops for fresh tires.

Truex was behind only Todd Gilliland, who has yet to pit, at the time of the move.

Meanwhile, thunderstorms are looming west of the track and the region remains under a tornado watch.

Bell, Logano big winners after Stage 1; Elliott scuffles

LOUDON, N.H. — Christopher Bell held his position for the final 27 laps of the first stage to maintain his lead of the 2024 USA TODAY 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Joey Logano, a New England native, edged polesitter Chase Elliott on the final lap of Stage 1 to finish second in the stage. Elliott might be looking to around to see what exactly went wrong after leading the first 42 laps of the race.

The others to receive points after Stage 1 were Ryan Blaney (fourth), Josh Berry (fifth), Martin Truex Jr. (sixth), Denny Hamlin (seventh), Ross Chastain (eighth, Tyer Reddick (ninth) and Alex Bowman (10th).

Christopher Bell takes lead on lap 43

LOUDON, N.H. — Could Christopher Bell do it two days in a row?

The winner of Saturday's NASCAR Xfinity Series race, Bell made a move on the inside of Chase Elliott to take the lead on the 43rd lap of the 2024 USA TODAY 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Bell, who started fourth Sunday, methodically trimmed Elliott's lead over the previous 10 laps. Elliott led by more than three seconds at one point. Still, Elliott remains about a second behind Bell with a little more than 20 laps to go in the first stage. — Richard Morin, USA TODAY Sports

Chase Elliott jumps out to lead on first lap

LOUDON, N.H. — Polesitter Chase Elliott went three lanes deep as the green flag dropped and made a statement run on the first lap to lead the 2024 USA TODAY 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Christopher Bell was right behind in second place, followed by Ross Chastain, Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney.

What time is the USA TODAY 301 NASCAR race?

Qualifying canceled for USA TODAY 301 NASCAR race

Where a drivers starts can have a lot to do with where they finish, and this race's starting lineup was determined by NASCAR's metric after qualifying was scrubbed due to weather on Saturday. There were benefactors,  particularly Chase Elliott , who will start from the pole position, and last week's winner, Ryan Blaney , who will start alongside Elliott on the front row with William Byron, Christopher Bell and Alex Bowman rounding out the top five.

Weather update for New Hampshire NASCAR Sprint Cup race today

It's been raining all morning but finally stopped around 11:15 a.m. ET. The sky is looking cloudy with humid and hazy conditions for the race. But everything is not in the clear yet. The National Weather Service placed the area under a tornado watch until 8 p.m. ET. It said storms could move across the region this afternoon and have "the potential to produce damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes."

Drivers to watch at USA TODAY 301 NASCAR race

Which drivers have the best chance to claim victory at the 2024 USA TODAY 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway? These are the top drivers to watch Sunday in Loudon, New Hampshire.

Martin Treux Jr. is looking to go back-to-back after winning in New Hampshire last year, while Chase Elliott will look to stand on the top step of the podium from pole position.

If it's not either of those two hoisting the trophy after 301 laps, a good bet could be Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin or Christopher Bell — all have wins in 2024 as well as previous wins at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

NFL star Matthew Judon talks NASCAR, driving pace car

Wet weather ruined the opportunity for New England Patriots linebacker Matthew Judon to drive the pace car before the start of Sunday's Cup Series race, which is a shame since Judon believes he is the best driver among his Patriots teammates.

A soggy track meant Judon's pace car training had to be canceled, so the four-time Pro Bowler will instead ride shotgun inside the official Toyota Camry XSE pace car before the green light at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

"I probably wouldn't ask my teammates anything about driving," Judon said before the race. "I think I'm the best driver on the team. I came into it fresh, no knowledge and I'm just happy for real. This is just a new experience."

Could Judon's driving skills lead to a future career in professional racing?

"For sure, no," Judon said. "I don't even know how to drive a stick car."
