With its coastal location, gorgeous architecture, a dizzying array of distinct neighborhoods, and world-class museums (not to mention universities), you’ll never run out of incredible things to do in Boston .

We’ve been obsessed with Boston since we spent a summer living there, and will forever count it among our favorite East Coast weekend destinations.

During your trip, be sure to walk the Freedom Trail, relax at the Boston Public Garden and the Common, and enjoy the views from the water on a whale-watching cruise .

When it comes to neighborhoods, make sure to visit the picturesque North End, fashionable Back Bay, and grand Beacon Hill–three Boston neighborhoods you absolutely can’t miss.

Whether you want to seek out the iconic sights of Midtown , find hidden gems in the outer boroughs, pay a visit to the Statue of Liberty, museum-hop your way through iconic attractions, or simply eat your way through the city, you’ll be able to find all you’re looking for (and more) in New York.

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits,  a weekend in New York  is certainly long enough to see many of the highlights that we’ve all seen over and over in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the New York Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building , the Brooklyn Bridge–on a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just 1-2 (no more–there’s too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

We loved taking this fun food tour when visiting Philadelphia, and of course, eating our way through Reading Terminal Market.

Be sure to also make time to visit some of Philadelphia’s incredible museums during your visit, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of the American Revolution (we loved this one), and touring the dark but fascinating Eastern State Penitentiary.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is also home to another essential stop in this iconic East Coast City: the Rocky Steps (and if you’re willing to work up a sweat, definitely consider running up them yourself.

Where to Stay in Philadelphia

• Morris House Hotel : Located right by Washington Square and a short walk from Independence Hall, Morris House Hotel is both a National Historic Landmark dating to the 18th century and a popular boutique hotel!
• Home2Suites By Hilton : The Home2Suites concept of combining the appeal of a hotel and an Airbnb into one property was excellent (our spacious room had a kitchenette), and the customer service is great.

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, but it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip on the East Coast!

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC.

Everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is available.

There are far more than you can visit in a single weekend, and as a bonus, most DC museums are free to visit!

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While Washington DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that visiting during cherry blossom season is an incredible (but crowded) experience.

Where to Stay in Washington DC

• CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
• Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

Compared to some of the other destinations in this travel guide, Baltimore is definitely a bit under the radar as far as cities to visit on the East Coast go (unless you’re headed to a Ravens or an Orioles game, of course).

If you’re looking for a coastal American city with plenty of history, art, and food to offer, though, Baltimore has you covered!

The Baltimore Museum of Art, George Peabody Library, Walters Art Museum, American Visionary Museum, and more, will keep any museum-hopper happy.

For American history buffs, Fort McHenry is a must, and for literary lovers, Edgar Allan Poe’s House is tiny but interesting.

When it comes to wandering, the neighborhoods of Inner Harbor, Harbor East, Fells Point, and Little Italy have plenty to explore.

And, of course, no weekend in Baltimore is complete without chowing down on crab cakes!

Where to Stay in Baltimore

• The Inn at Henderson’s Wharf : Housed in a warehouse-turned-charming-hotel, you can find the popular Inn at Henderson’s Wharf at the end of a delightful cobblestone street in Fells Point.
• Kimpton Hotel Monaco Baltimore : Housed in the former B&O Railroad Headquarters, walking into the opulent lobby of the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Baltimore feels like stepping back in time–and the rooms are incredibly comfortable, too

Alexandria may be located just south of Washington DC, but it can definitely hold its own as a standalone weekend getaway on the East Coast!

Set along the Potomac River, Alexandria is stately and beautiful, with plenty of gorgeous architecture, great food, interesting history, and fun shopping to offer.

Don’t miss the iconic King Street Mile (and if you’re interested in some of the less savory historic stories, consider coming back at night for a ghost tour).

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a must-see, and you can climb to the top for an excellent view of the city.

As far as museums go, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is a fun stop!

Gadsby’s Tavern –part fine dining restaurant, and part museum–gives modern visitors the chance to dine in the same space where many of the Founding Fathers once plotted against British rule.

Alexandria’s most popular attraction, though, lies just 15 minutes south and technically outside of town: Mount Vernon, the former plantation of George Washington.

Where to Stay in Alexandria, Virginia

• Hilton Alexandria Old Town is a really fantastic option, rooms are huge and really fresh and bright. The onsite restaurant is really great if you don’t want to venture out early for breakfast. It is also right next to the Amtrak and Metro station, perfect for easy access to explore!
• StayAPT Suites Fort Belvoir , while a little further off the main spots it is still close enough to access. These are a great budget friendly option if you also prefer self-catering with hotel facilities.

Without a doubt, the small but stunning city of Savannah, Georgia is one of the absolute best East Coast cities for a USA weekend getaway.

It also happens to be one of our favorite cities in the world, and we’ll never stop revisiting it!

Featuring absolutely stunning architecture, 22 of its original 24 town squares, endless oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and some of the best food in the country, exploring the best things to do in Savannah is always a blast.

While you’re there, be sure to meander down beautiful Jones Street, check out Forsyth Park, hear some of the city’s most enduring legends on a ghost tour , enjoy views from River Street, and take in some of Savannah’s complex history at its various house museums and houses of worship.

Don’t forget to set aside plenty of time to eat!

While there are dozens of incredible  restaurants in Savannah , favorites include The Olde Pink House and The Grey for special occasions, The Collins Quarter for their legendary lavender mocha latte, and Leopold’s Ice Cream for a scoop of their famous Tutti Frutti ice cream.

Have enough time for a quick day trip ?

Tybee Island –also known as “Savannah’s Beach”–is less than a 30-minute drive away, allowing you to easily combine a beach trip and city break!

Where to Stay in Savannah

• The Marshall House : Featuring a popular included breakfast, a fantastic location in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, and phenomenal reviews, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Marshall House!
• Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

Beautiful beaches, a unique culture that’s all its own, fabulous architecture, and–of course–plenty of sunshine: you’ll find all of this and far more by heading all the way south to Miami for your East Coast weekend getaway!

When it comes to beaches, South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree.

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though!

Be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For a unique perspective on the city, consider taking a boat cruise –we were very impressed with how much we enjoyed ours!

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning on a day trip to nearby Everglades National Park.

Or, if you have a few more days (say, an extra long weekend trip), you can road trip all the way to Key West, the southernmost point of the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

• Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely  perfect.  Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
• The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

Colorful, coastal, and downright charming, Charleston makes an absolutely delightful East Coast weekend getaway.

Don’t mistake Charleston for all glamour, though: the city has a national reputation for its incredible food scene, played an important role in two of the USA’s most important wars, and is home to an enormous amount of often heavy history.

While you’re there, be sure to snap photos at beautiful Rainbow Row and The Battery, check out City Market, enjoy Waterfront Park, and tour the Olde Exchange and Dungeon (which is one of the places where the US Constitution was ratified).

The Old Slave Mart Museum is home to heartbreaking history and is an essential stop when working to understand the history of Charleston.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there, and pay a visit to Fort Sumter to learn about its history (and enjoy the views).

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Where to Stay in Charleston

• The Jasmine House : This stunning boutique inn is housed in a Greek Revivalist home dating to 1843, and decorated to the nines! This is exactly the kind of property visitors dream about planning a trip to The Holy City, and the impeccable reviews and fantastic location make The Jasmine House the perfect place to stay when in Charleston.
• Harbourview Inn : For charming luxury in the heart of historic Charleston, check into the gorgeous Harbourview Inn, located just steps away from Rainbow Row and Waterfront Park. The inn features excellent views from its rooftop, a phenomenal included breakfast, and excellent reviews.

Of all of the weekend getaways on the East Coast covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a group divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate , plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, make it a fabulous US weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as well.

There are plenty of easy hikes near Asheville (many of them featuring waterfalls) that allow travelers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting!

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors.

Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States , Blue Ridge Parkway is a drive not to be missed.

Where to Stay in Asheville

• Cedar Crest Inn: This pink 1891 mansion house is a perfect place to base yourself in Asheville. Packed with historical details and stunning architecture you can imagine it as a mini Biltmore.
• The Applewood Manor : Located within walking distance of downtown via a greenbelt trail, The Applewood Manor feels like it’s in a peaceful, quiet location–but it’s still in a perfect location to make the most of Asheville.

Sprawling, historic, interesting, and full of delicious southern food, Atlanta makes a fantastic weekend getaway on the East Coast USA.

The city’s museums are worthy of a large swath of your time, with many of them centered around Centennial Olympic Park (where the 1996 Olympics were held).

In the immediate area, you can find the National Center for Civil and Human Rights (an absolute must-see when visiting Atlanta), the Georgia Aquarium, and the famous World of Coca-Cola.

Of course, no visit to Atlanta would be complete without time spent at the Martin Luther King Historical Park, which is home to several sites important to the life of Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement overall.

Other interesting places to visit during a weekend in Atlanta include the BeltLine, Ponce City Market (for excellent food), and the Atlanta History Center.

Atlanta–and Georgia overall–are hotspots for filming movies and TV shows ranging from The Walking Dead to Stranger Things.

Without a doubt, Orlando is not only one of the most popular East Coast cities to visit but one of the most popular weekend getaways in the entire USA, and that’s for one important reason: theme parks!

From Walt Disney World to Universal, Orlando’s world-class theme parks are an enormous draw for kids and adults alike, and they alone are a reason to visit Central Florida!

Whether you want to ride the classic Disney rides at Magic Kingdom, step into Hogwarts in Harry Potter World, or ride soaring roller coasters, you’ll have a blast.

Away from its iconic theme parks, though, there is still plenty to do in Central Florida!

Canoeing at Wekiwa Springs was a favorite activity of mine as a kid and is a great way to experience a beautiful Florida spring without going far.

The Kennedy Space Center is about an hour away from downtown Orlando, and an incredible experience.

Where to Stay in Orlando, Florida

• The Delaney Hotel : For a stay in Downtown Orlando this is the best pick for your hotel. Rooms are clean and classic and the hotel is a short walk to Church Street Station.
• Caribe Royale : If you are looking for a resort close to Disney, this is the one. There is a fabulous pool and poolside bar, and a shuttle service to the Disney ticket office.

Baltimore, Maryland

From touring the historic ships that brought workers to the city through the  Inner Harbor  to antique shopping at Fells Point , the city of Baltimore may be a little less popular than others on this list, but that doesn't mean it's not a great destination for your east coast travels.

With plenty of unique art galleries  and tourist attractions like the National Aquarium , Baltimore offers visitors of all ages plenty of opportunities to explore for a fraction of the cost of some of the other East Coast cities. Be sure to stop into some area bars and restaurants—you won't want to miss Baltimore's specialty: crab cakes .

Richmond, Virginia

The capital city of Virginia, ​ Richmond , offers a nice blend of historical destinations and trendy new restaurants and bars, making it an ideal vacation for a casual weekend trip or a romantic getaway with someone you love—just be sure to check out these romantic Richmond destinations before you go!

In terms of history, Virginia has also played its part in the founding of America, but it's even more prominent as the site of our country's greatest internal battle: the Civil War. Asheville, NC

Charleston, SC

A perfect companion city to Savannah, Charleston offers visitors a chance to step back in time simply by walking down the brick streets of this charming southeastern town.

Atlanta, GA

Providence, RI

The capital of Rhode Island (and its largest city), Providence , offers guests a variety of entertainment options including European-style gondola rides, exploring Colonial houses, and even the bacon at Providence's famous Kitchen Restaurant.

Annapolis, MD

Portsmouth, NH

A port city modeled after one by the same name in England, Portsmouth, New Hampshire is full of 17th and 18th-century homes beautifully restored and maintained, giving residents and guests alike a chance to see how our Founding Fathers lived when they originally settled the United States.

The Strawbery Banke Museum is one of the most popular tourist destinations in this quiet 21,000-population town, where costumed staffers prepare traditional crafts while regaling guests with stories of the city's foundation. Also be sure to check out the changing foliage around the city during the fall months—but come early as the winter sets in quick this far to the northeast —as well as the many gay-friendly bars this city has become known for.

Killington, VT

Also tucked away in one of the farthest northeastern states in the United States, the quiet ski resort town of Killington, Vermont offers tourists a chance to explore the great outdoors with all the comforts of a modern city.

If you're a fan of fall foliage, be sure to visit the K-1 Gondola Ride at Killington during September and October. The peak of the mountain at Killington Park affords guests the opportunity to look across five states and Canada to take in all the wonder of the changing leaves.

The 21 Wildest East Coast Beaches

Not all stretches of sand are created equal. These are the Atlantic’s best, most adventurous shorelines, from Maine to Florida.

If you’ve ever lived along the East Coast, there’s a secret that all curious, outdoorsy people soon discover: the wildest, most deserted places are often those abutting the Atlantic. That’s right, the best East Coast beaches can be every bit as remote-feeling as Western landscapes. This is easier to comprehend when you realize that the East Coast has roughly 30,000 miles of coastline. (The entire Pacific Coast, by contrast, has 7,863.)

This revelation came to me early, while exploring New England in my twenties, and re-confirmed it in my 30s and 40s, as I looked to escape New York City on weekends. Since then, I’ve driven as far as Maine and North Carolina’s Outer Banks—roughly eight hours in either direction—from NYC to explore an “undiscovered” beaches and maybe catch a fish or two. I’ve also road tripped all over the south’s Lowcountry looking for an empty stretch of sand, and have spent way too much time on Florida’s Atlantic Coast trying to to catch a redfish or bonefish on a fly rod.

Look, I’m not foolish enough to think anyone can be an “expert” on 30,000 miles worth of barrier islands, salt marshes, and tiny beachside communities. But I’ve explored enough to say with confidence that there are some wild damn places out there, and I’ve been lucky enough to discover a few that are well worth a visit.

Here are just a handful of my favorites. This list also includes a mix of both remote, undeveloped gems and impossible-to-ignore standbys that are great simply because of their, well…beach vibes. It’s a whole thing, and any town that has it, like Cape May, New Jersey, or Folly Beach, South Carolina, is worth a look-see, too. Trust me, you can’t go wrong with any of these beaches, as long as you’re packing some sunscreen (and maybe a bottle of bug spray for the real remote ones).

Best Beaches in Maine

Location: Twelve miles south of Bar Harbor Why We Love It: Soft sand surrounded by the coniferous forest of Acadia National Park

This is probably Maine’s most iconic beach —a pocket of white sand framed by rocky shorelines and wind-flagged trees—and one of the most beautiful beaches in U.S. National Parks . For New Englanders, Sand Beach is well-known—for good reason. It’s one of the few sandy beaches in this part of the state (hence the name), and it’s sheltered just enough from the wind that it’s often perfect for sunbathing on a warm day. In the summer months, there’s even a lifeguard on duty. This all means that it’s popular and you can expect crowds in July and August. Even then, only a handful of people venture into the water, because its temperature usually peaks south of 60 degrees Fahrenheit. But if you’re willing to brave the cold Atlantic, swimming here can be good. Despite its popularity, it can even feel secluded on the right day. There’s also hiking and paddling in nearby Acadia. One of the more difficult and popular treks is Beehive Trail , a 1.4-mile loop that ascends 450 feet and offers stunning views of the below.

Know Before You Go: Even though it’s inside Acadia National Park, there is no fee to access the beach. The parking lot, however, occasionally fills up on busy weekend days, so it’s best to arrive early.

Bonus Beach: Roque Bluffs State Park, Maine

Location: In the heart of Down East Maine, eight miles from the small town of Machias Best For: A choose-your-own-adventure swim, either in the cold ocean waters or in a freshwater pond

The bulk of this 274-acre park is a half-mile crescent of sand and pebbles that divides the shallow waters of 60-acre Simpson Pond from Englishman Bay. In the heat of summer, it’s possible to swim in either—or both, a plunge in the brisk saltwater followed by the comparably warm waters of Simpson Pond. While it’s great for a plunge, this is not a lounging beach, to be clear, as the pebbles make laying on a beach towel uncomfortable. But Roque Bluffs does offer a relaxing stroll with dramatic views of rugged islands jutting out of the ocean waters. There’s also a series of short trails in the fields and woodlands inside the park, with an excellent vantage point of Pond Cove and Great Cove. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a dip.

Best Beach in New Hampshire

Location: 15 miles South of Portsmouth, near the border with Massachusetts Why We Love It: A quieter alternative to its more bustling neighbors, with pristine sands

New Hampshire has the shortest coastline in the U.S. at just 18 miles, but it packs some excellent beaches into that stretch. Its most famous is Hampton Beach, a classic New England destination with white sand, long boardwalks, and a circus-like atmosphere, thanks to its string of arcades. Much better is Seabrook Beach, across the inlet from Hampton, with impossibly white sand, consistent waves, and none of the crowds. By comparison, it feels hidden, serene, and impossibly quaint. There’s a reason for this: parking is nearly impossible to find because it’s prohibited without a resident parking permit. But if you make it here, you’ll have a wide expanse of sand to stroll along or set up an umbrella. The surfing is good here, and the dunes make it seem wild, even if you’re only a few minutes to the Hampton Beach circus.

Know Before You Go: To get around the parking, take an Uber or ride a bike from the town of Seabrook, less than 5 miles away. You can also pay for parking at Hampton Beach and walk across Hampton Bridge, then down to Seabrook, a little over a mile walk.

Best Beaches in Massachusetts

Location: The Outer Cape, roughly 90 miles from downtown Boston Why We Love It: Unparalleled, wide-open stretches of soft sand and wind-swept dunes

No list like this would be complete without including Cape Cod National Seashore , 40 miles of pristine beaches, freshwater ponds, and high dunes interspersed by lighthouses, cranberry bogs, and hiking trails. The recreational opportunities are practically endless, and whole books have been written about how to make the most of the beaches here. But if you want a down-and-dirty guide for newbies, this is it. Coast Guard Beach, in the town of Eastham, is one of the most popular beaches because it’s great for lounging and swimming on the Atlantic side, and it also offers paddling in nearby Nauset Bay or Salt Pond Bay. If you want to feel like you’re walking off the Eastern Seaboard, head to Marconi Beach, with sweeping Atlantic views. Hiking along the bluffs here will make you feel as if you could see a white whale at any moment.

Know Before You Go: Traffic headed to the Cape is infamous on summer weekends, so if you go during peak times, it’s best to stay overnight or through the weekend. (Or instead, go during the week.) If you do stay overnight, Provincetown, despite its crowds and high price tags, is worth the added cost. This artist colony and LGBTQ+ capital is brimming with verve and quirkiness and the energy it adds to a vacation is a perfect complement to days spent in the salt and sand.

Bonus Beach: Crane Beach, Massachusetts

Location: Five miles from the town of Ipswich, 30 miles north of Boston Best For: Escaping the crowds and enjoying a slice of bucolic New England on your way to the beach

Cape Cod gets nearly all of the beach attention in Massachusetts, but this one, on the North Shore, features four miles of pristine shoreline backed by tall dunes and salt marshes. It can get busy on a summer weekend, but otherwise offers a peaceful opportunity for walking on the sand, hiking five miles worth of trails through the dunes, birdwatching, and paddling in the nearby Ipswich River or Essex Bay. Beach passes are required and can be purchased in advance . If you come, don’t leave before checking out Castle Hill on the Crane Estate , a palace-like summer estate built for industrialist Richard Teller Crane Jr., with impeccably maintained gardens and a rolling grass lawn stretching to the water.

Best Beach in Rhode Island

Location: In Middletown, next door to Newport Why We Love It: A city-person’s beach that has a good hike within walking distance

Locals call this mile-long stretch of sand on the southeastern shore of Aquidneck Island Second Beach , but it is anything but secondary. Not only does it have great swimming and sunbathing, the western flank of Sachuest, called Surfer’s End, is known for its consistent swells. If you get bored sunbathing on the beach, you can also easily walk to the eastern end, which is the beginning of Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge , with three miles of trails. Birdwatchers are common here because of the diversity of species, including the second largest wintering population of harlequin ducks on the Atlantic coast. It also has great fishing from shore, including an active night fishing permit system for striped bass.

Know Before You Go: This is a full-service beach, with concession stands, bathrooms, grills, etc., so don’t expect pristine wildlands—or to be by yourself. Rent a surfboard from the rental area and, after your session, check out Gilded Age mansions in Newport.

Best Beaches in New York

Ditch plains park beach, new york.

Location: Two miles east of Montauk Village, on the far eastern end of Long Island Why We Love It: It’s home to one of the best surf breafks on the East Coast.

For many New Yorkers trekking out to the Hamptons, this two-mile beach is as much a part of summer weekends as Hampton Water rosé. That’s, in part, because Ditch Plains is such a great place to set up for a day in the sun, thanks to its swim-friendly waters  (depending on conditions) and lifeguards on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day (roughly). There’s also a food truck next to the beach, called Ditch Wich , that serves up some of the area’s best poke bowls and wraps. But the reason this beach is on this list is because of the surf break just offshore, which offers good waves in just about any swell direction. The lineup is notorious for getting crowded, but there are definitely days in the fall when, midweek, you can find yourself sharing swells with only one or two other surfers—or even snagging them all for yourself.

Know Before You Go: Parking in the lot next to the beach requires an East Hampton permit (available to residents only). In the summer, take an Uber/Lyft or, better yet, rent a cruiser bike in Montauk and ride here.

Bonus Beach: Napeague Beach, New York

Location: Between Amagansett and Montauk, on the east end of Long Island Best For: Getting a taste of what Long Island beaches felt like before the crowds invaded

Tucked off Highway 27 between the prim and proper Hamptons and the bustling beaches of Montauk lies one of the area’s great secrets: a two-mile stretch of sand that even locals overlook. Technically, it’s part of 1,364-acre Napeague State Park , but the beach here feels private, in part because it’s sandwiched between two neighborhoods who guard their sand with zeal. Napeague Beach is, however, open to the public, and it’s popular with 4x4ers that have beach driving permits . You can easily walk to the sand, however, by parking at a small, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spot on the south side of Highway 27. This is where 4x4s access the beach, and you’ll have to walk from here through the dunes. Doing so only makes the empty beach feel that much more rewarding once you get a full view of the wind-swept dunes, with the occasional surfcaster chucking rigs far out into the ocean. Thanks to its remoteness, this beach is also popular with the endangered piping plover, so it’s often closed during summer nesting season. When it’s open, however—especially in fall—it can feel downright abandoned.

Best Beaches in New Jersey

Location: Barnegat Peninsula, south of the town of Seaside Heights Why We Love It: White sand beaches in a wild landscape that feels frozen in time

Many New Jerseyans have never even been to this park, with 10 miles of sand dunes, maritime forests, and freshwater wetlands. That’s because this place is as far from the manicured sand, boardwalks, and hotdog stands as it gets. Island Beach State Park is proof that remote-feeling beaches can exist anywhere, even in New Jersey. In addition to being home to the state’s largest osprey colony, it’s frequented by peregrine falcons, waterfowl, shorebirds, and migrating songbirds. Fishermen flock here, too, whether they’re targeting the surf on the Atlantic side or casting in Barnegat Bay. There’s a designated swimming beach (called Ocean Swimming Beach), surfing, an area for kitesurfing, and even eight miles of trails. Sunbathing is really the only thing you shouldn’t do here, because you’ll be missing out on so much else.

Know Before You Go: One of the best recreational opportunities may be paddling from Island Beach into the Sedge Island Wildlife Management Area, one of New Jersey’s most productive wildlife habitats, with four different water trails to paddle through it.

Bonus Beach: Cape May Beach, New Jersey

Location: Cape May, on the far southern coast of the state Best For: Relaxing on manicured sand next to one of the most charming towns in all of New Jersey

This is the beach that many New Jerseyans will point to as their state’s best—and for good reason. The town of Cape May is lovely as hell, and downtown is adjacent to the main beach, with sugary sand that is raked cleaned nearly every day during summer, making it feel, well, pristine. It’s also welcoming, full of sunbathers and swimmers chilling out on the weekend, which is all part of the charm. This is a social beach, with the occasional fireworks show or movie on the beach night . If you want to sneak away from some of the crowds during the day, walk to the West, towards Cove Beach, which usually has more room to lay out an oversized beach towel (and great sunset views). There’s also plenty of activities nearby, including a few beach breaks good for groms, skimboarding, fishing, and paddling in the harbor.

Best Beach in Delaware

Location: Seven miles south of Rehoboth Beach Why We Love It: Six miles of ocean-front sand and 20 miles of bay shoreline full of possibilities

This popular state park offers easy access to the junction of Indian River Bay, Rehoboth Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. As such, it is overflowing with activities: swimming, surfing, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, hiking, paddling, crabbing, and camping, among others. There are two ocean swimming areas, patrolled by lifeguards during the summer season, and there’s a decent surf break at the Indian River Inlet , which can be great with some southerly wind protection (but is also challenging, thanks to its shallow water). If you want to stretch your legs, there’s a one-mile hiking trail through the adjacent Burton Island Nature Preserve , with raised boardwalks over the marshlands.

Know Before You Go: There’s a $5 daily entrance fee ($10 for nonresidents), but those fees help make this an extremely well-managed park, with great resources to help you plan practically any adventure, whether it’s birding, surfcasting, paddling, or something else.

Best Beach in Maryland

Location: Maryland’s Eastern Shore, roughly 10 miles from Ocean City Why We Love It: 37 miles of remote dunes with herds of wild horses

There is no other place on the East Coast that demonstrates just how wild a coastline can be like this national seashore, which stretches across the Maryland and Virginia border. Assateague is one of the largest barrier islands on the eastern seaboard with uninterrupted coastal habitats, and it has become famous for its wild horses, which have been here for hundreds of years. If you want to see them, you’re probably better off  heading to the Maryland side or by booking a tour with a third-party organizer. There are two entrances, one in the north and one in the south, and there is no vehicle access between the two (other than by going back to the mainland). If you want to really explore the beaches—and you have a four-wheel drive rig—you can apply for and purchase an over-sand vehicle (OVS) permit , which allows you to access nearly the entire length of the beach . You can fish mile after mile of remote surf or just find an open stretch of sand to sit down and enjoy the ocean breeze.

Know Before You Go: Nearly every year, it seems, Assateague breaks its previous record for visitation, with 2.3 million people coming here in 2022 . So yes, expect to share the sand. The northern end of Assateague Island tends to be less busy than the southern end, but the surest way to get away from the crowds is with an OSV permit or by walking a few miles down the beach.

Best Beach in Virginia

Location: Roughly 19 miles south of Virginia Beach Why We Love It: It remains one of the last undeveloped shorelines in this part of the Atlantic coast.

This is not the place to come if you’re hoping to lay out a towel and soak in some rays (there are no dedicated swimming areas, either), but it is one of Virginia’s most dramatic, and least visited, parks. Situated between Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the North Carolina border, False Cape State Park offers excellent stretches of open sand that are accessible only by hiking, biking, or boating to them. The reward is stunning coastal views, good surfcasting, and on the bay side, a maze of water trails to paddle. There are a series of hiking trails to choose from, too, which total 15.3 miles. These include Barbour Hill, a 1.42-mile self-guided trek through the dunes to the ocean. If you’re committed, there’s even a primitive camping program, which requires a hike into your site of anywhere from five to nine miles. But you’re almost guaranteed to be all alone.

Know Before You Go: The park operates a tram ($8 per person) that offers a four-hour guided tour through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park, which is a good way to see the wildlife here without committing to a longer hike or adventure.

Best Beaches in North Carolina

Location: On the Outer Banks, along highway NC-12 Why We Love It: Iconic lighthouses, unparalleled surf, and vast natural habitats

It’s hard to think of a better beach for a list like this. In reality, though, this is an entire ecosystem, with 70 miles and 30,000 acres of grass-covered dunes, wide sand beaches, marshes, and woodlands that are home to some 400-plus bird species, among other critters. Sure, there will be crowds and traffic in summer, but it’s hard to find a more alluring coastline with so many activities. Surfing is excellent here, with regular swells at a range of spots, including Canadian Hole and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, both near the town of Buxton. It’s also very well established as a kite-surfing hotspot, with consistent winds blowing through Pamlico Sound (launch from Kite Point ). Fishing is great, too—both on the ocean and sound sides—and paddlers can explore the flat waters on the sound side as well, launching from the Oregon Inlet Kayak Launch. There are even three different hiking trails, including a nine-mile trek through the dunes and maritime forests on Hatteras Island. Frankly, it’s hard to imagine a better seashore for basically anything you want to do outside.

Know Before You Go : Cape Hatteras National Seashore is free to enter, but there are fees for just about everything else—off-road vehicle use, camping, and climbing the 200 steps to the top of Bodie Island Lighthouse, for example ( $10 per person ). Also, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, a highlight for many people, is closed for at least the next year or two as it undergoes repairs.

Bonus Beach: Ocracoke Island, North Carolina

Location: In the southern Outer Banks , across the channel from Hatteras Island Best For: Getting away from it all

Technically, this 13-mile-long barrier island is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, as most of it is managed by the park service, but it feels a world apart, thanks to its frozen-in-time quirkiness and just how raw the landscape feels. Ocracoke is also a testament to how going the extra mile is totally worth it. The island is only accessible by ferry , which makes the beaches here much, much less crowded. It can often feel as  if you’re alone, especially in early fall. For surfing, the beach near Ocracoke Inlet offers consistent waves, and fishermen can surfcast along the Atlantic shores or set up on the sound-side shoreline, like at South Point. Hammock Hills Nature Trail offers a good walk for hikers. There’s even a herd of ponies managed by the park service that are descendants of wild horses that have lived on the island since the 17th or 18th century, give or take a 100 years.

Best Beaches in South Carolina

Folly beach, south carolina.

Location: Twelve miles from downtown Charleston, on Folly Island Why We Love It: An eclectic mix of Southern charm and seaside cool that’s hard to find anywhere else

Folly Beach is no secret—tourists have been coming here for generations—but this 12-square-mile barrier island is the epitome of what a great seaside community should be. “Beaching” is just a way of life here, which makes the whole thing irresistible, even if you’re just walking down the fishing pier. Of course, there’s a reason people flock here: six miles of white sand, palm trees, and warm Atlantic waters ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and, of course, surfing. Folly’s most famous break is the Washout, known for kicking up some of the best waves on the East Coast. There’s also plenty of other outdoor activities, from kayaking and SUPing through the marshes on the Folly River side of the island to riding a cruiser bike around town. Folly Beach can be a bit of a scene at night, but that also makes it great for snagging some beach town energy and good eats, from fresh seafood to beachside tacos. There’s perhaps no better place to escape reality for a weekend (or two).

Know Before You Go: While surfing at Folly Beach is better in the winter, the summer months are the prime time for live music, festivals, outdoor movies, and crowds, making it the best time to experience its full intensity. Parking can be a challenge, so if you’re only coming for a weekend day, it’s best to rideshare.

Bonus Beach: Hunting Island State Park Beach, South Carolina

Location: 15 miles east of the town Beaufort, and roughly 90 miles south of Charleston Best For: A beach trip that’s as much about outdoor adventures as lying on the sand

Hunting Island State Park is South Carolina’s most popular park—5,000 acres of pristine Lowcountry that’s full of salt marshes, palmetto and live oak forests, and a four-mile-long stretch of white sand. Even with the crowds on a summer weekend, however, this barrier island feels pristine, as it’s almost totally undeveloped. And if you come on a weekday (or, better yet, in the fall,), it’ll feel downright remote. There are a number of great hiking trails in the park, including the 1.9-mile Diamondback Rattlesnake Trail and the easy-peasy Marsh Boardwalk , which might be the best spot along the coast for taking in the sunset. There’s a 950-foot fishing pier, and paddling in the marshes surrounding the island. As for the beach, it doesn’t disappoint either, and if you walk to the southern end you can see Little Hunting Island Boneyard Beach, where skeletal remains of dead trees dot the sand.

Best Beaches in Georgia

Location: Roughly 75 miles south of Savannah, near the tiny town of Darien Why We Love It: Untouched natural beauty and a rich history on the South’s most overlooked coastline

Sapelo Island, the fourth largest barrier island in Georgia, is one of the East Coast’s best-kept secrets. There are miles and miles of pristine beaches, maritime forests, and salt marshes across this 12-mile-long island, which has hardly changed since the 1980s—or even the 1880s. While the landscape here is unforgettable, the island is mostly known for its unique history, being home to the Hog Hammock community, one of the South’s few remaining Gullah Geechee settlements , descendants of enslaved West Africans brought to work on plantations along the Atlantic coast. Today, there are roughly 70 people who live in Hog Hammock. Each of the island’s two most famous buildings, the R.J. Reynolds Mansion and the Sapelo Island Lighthouse, have over 200 years of history on the island, too. In short, if you want a place that’s perfect for disconnecting from the modern world, this is it. You can ride a bike down the empty streets, kayak to Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge (of Blackbeard pirate fame) for bird-watching, or simply stroll along the untouched shores—all of which can be mind-blowingly deserted. Nanny Goat Beach, for example, is completely wide-open sand with hardly a soul on it. It’s hard to believe a place like this even exists today.

Know Before You Go: This is not the place to come if you’re looking for a quick getaway. The only way to arrive at Sapelo is via a 30-minute ferry ride, provided by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources ( $5 per person ). Planning ahead is essential, as you’ll likely need to stay the night and there are very few places to crash. AirbnB may be your best bet or reserve a spot at Cabretta Campground . Locals still protect this island and its heritage as if it’s their own—because it is. A little respect goes a long way to making your visit feel rewarding.

Bonus Beach: Cumberland Island, Georgia

Location: On the far southern coast of Georgia, just across the water from Fernandina Beach, Florida Best For: Camping in one of the South’s most serene, untouched landscapes

Cumberland is Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island, and it’s easy to add another superlative to this list: wildest. This national seashore stretches over 17 miles of empty beaches, framed by majestic live oaks and palmettos, and is home to a population of feral horses, which you can often see passing by on the unpaved roads. The island’s isolation is its appeal, but there is plenty to do, too. There are wide sandy shores to walk on, ruins from Dungeness Mansion to explore, and an extensive network of trails to amble around on. Access to Cumberland Island is controlled via the National Park Service, and the easiest  way to get here is via a 45-minute ferry ride (and you’ll need an advanced permit if you plan to camp here). There are no stores and very limited facilities, so you also need to be self-sufficient. But the experience of camping under the stars with the sounds of the ocean and the sight of wild horses is simply unmatched.

Best Beaches in Florida

Location: A little over an hour East of Orlando, just a short drive from Kennedy Space Center Why We Love It: A surfer’s paradise with a laid-back atmosphere on Florida’s “Space Coast”

Cocoa Beach, with its endless stretches of soft, sandy beaches, and consistent waves no matter the season, is one of the East Coast’s most iconic beach destinations. No other city on the eastern seaboard is so well-known for its surfing and surf culture (it’s the hometown of Kelly Slater, after all). It lives up to the hype. There are waves for beginners and seasoned surfers alike, with the iconic Cocoa Beach Pier providing the perfect backdrop for those looking to simply enjoy the view of the lineups. The area is also steeped in space history, being just 20 miles to the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral. You can even watch a rocket launch from the beach if you time it right (check out the rocket launch calendar at the space center’s website). If you’re looking for slower-paced activities, there’s decent fishing from the pier and the Banana River is great for paddling. Sebastian Inlet State Park is well-known for its surf breaks and its fishing spots, which are both excellent on account of the park being situated where the Indian River flows into the Atlantic. The park’s First Peak and Monster Hole offer some of the best surf breaks on the East Coast and its waters are teeming with snook, redfish, and Spanish mackerel, making it a premier fishing destination. The Indian River Lagoon has calm waters that are good for paddling and there’s even a decent trail in the park to walk on, called Hammock Trail. There are, of course, long stretches of unspoiled sand great for sunbathing and shell collecting (this is a Best Beaches list, after all.) It’s a bit of an ordeal to drive to it, because the causeways accessing the barrier island are miles apart, but that also makes it less crowded. The best part, though, is that it’s far away from the hoopla of the Miami metroplex in the south and Daytona Beach in the north, meaning this beach is totally worth the extra effort to get to it.

New York , one of the East Coast major cities, is a vibrant mixture of art, food, fashion, and entertainment. It is one of the best East Coast cities with a myriad of iconic things to see and do. 

The Empire State Building stands 380 meters high, and its main observation deck is on the 86th floor. It is still the 44th highest skyscraper in the world and is spectacular to visit at night (open till 02.00). The One World Trade Centre is the tallest building in the western hemisphere. The 93-meter high Statue of Liberty is another must-see. You can get there by ferry, and there is also a museum that is worth visiting.

A trip yo New York wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Central Park one of the absolute must-see places on the East Coats. It sits in the middle of Manhattan and is huge with 25,000 trees, a lake, ponds and fountains. The easiest way to explore is on foot or by metro. 

The Metropolitan Museum of Art backs onto Fifth Avenue and contains 5,000 years of art from all over the world – if you love art, it could take you a whole day to see it all! Other places to visit include the Rockefeller Centre, Times Square, and Brooklyn Bridge plus the myriad of different shops. Grab an early dinner because Broadway is a must-do in the evening – there are 41 shows to choose from!

No travel to East Coast USA is complete without a visit to the nation’s capital, Washington, DC – one of the best cities on the East Coast. This beautiful and historic city is located 5 hours south of New York City on the East Coast. DC is best known for its politics and historic landmarks, but it is also a city filled with vibrant neighbourhoods, incredible nature and great food.

New Orleans is one of the best East Coast cities for bubbling excitement and history at every turn. Top things to do here include taking a food tour. It’s a great way to get a sampling of all the local cuisines and learn the difference between Creole and Cajun cooking. See a live jazz show – New Orleans is the place where jazz was born. Here, you’ll find many incredible live jazz shows at night. Take a cemetery tour – NOLA’s historical tombs are above ground (due to the high water table). They are actually quite beautiful and interesting to see. In fact, New Orleans is one of the best East Coast vacation destinations for foodies and jazz fans!

If you’re looking for a place to stay, The Royal Sonesta is a nice hotel in a prime location. Pro tip: if you pick a room on the Bourbon Street side, you’ll have some fun views, but it will be LOUD at night. (They provide earplugs, but just an FYI. Bourbon Street is crazy until the sunrises!) Another great option is to stay at one of the many awesome  Airbnbs in New Orleans .

Chicago 

Chicago is a city that fantastically blends old and new, modern and historic – an absolute must-see city on your East Coast travel. A three day stay in Chicago  is enough to just scratch the surface, but it would easily be possible to spend longer here. Staying around the Magnificent Mile is an excellent idea because you’re mostly walking distance to downtown and attractions like Navy Pier and the Chicago Riverwalk.  

In winter, Chicago can be bitterly cold, but so rewarding. Lake Michigan freezes over and looks utterly magical from up close at Oak Street Beach. In summer months, the same spot transforms from a winter wonderland into a lovely small swimming beach with fantastic city views.  

Millennium Park is a huge drawcard to Chicago, and most visitors will be familiar with the bean-shaped reflective Cloudgate sculpture that has become synonymous with the city. But Millennium Park has much more to offer including a winter ice-skating rink and an installation called the Crown Fountain which features faces of Chicago residents projected on two pillars at opposite ends of a reflecting pool.  

The food of Chicago is also a huge drawcard. Visitors absolutely cannot leave the city without trying Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza or a Chicago-style hotdog from the iconic hot dog restaurant Portillo’s.

The Texas Hill Country

Some destinations like Hamilton Pool and the distilleries in Dripping Springs or the original location Salt Lick BBQ can be visited as a day trip from Austin. But with so much beauty to discover, the Hill Country is one of the best places to vacation on East Coast. 

Rent a car and hit the road to explore the region’s small towns and the beautiful scenery in between. Fredericksburg is the most popular in the area and a great place to use as a base. 

Highway 290 leading into town is lined with vineyards, try Predernales and Becker for some of the state’s best wine and views!. 

Hike Enchanted Rock and try authentic German food downtown. Just 15 minutes outside of Fredericksburg is Luckenbach. This historic town hosts live music on the back patio of its original post office turned honkey-tonk bar. 

Another must-see historic small town is Gruene. It’s home to the oldest dance hall in Texas and regularly hosts some of the state’s most popular musicians. Dine at the Gristmill next door for a delicious dinner perched on the cliffs over the river.

Acadia national park.

Arcadia National Park is one of the best places to travel in the East Coast for adventure lovers.

There is no one perfect time to visit Acadia, but if you are going to visit, their summer boasts the best weather and the highest temperatures (as well as the highest number of visitors). 

As one of the oldest National Parks, Acadia preserves some of the most rugged coastline of the North Atlantic United States. Named for the early French settlers to the area, the Acadian wilderness boats beautiful hills, forests, and seas teeming with wildlife (particularly the lobster that the state is famous for). 

Among some of the highlights to Acadia is some of the best hiking in the northeast and getting to see the first rays of light in the US from the peak of Cadillac Mountain. 

No park in the northeast compares to Acadia’s size and diversity, and it’s the only park designated as a “National Park” in this region of the United States. 

If you do visit, be sure to check out some of the popular hikes such as the precipice and beehive trails, although they are maybe tough for those afraid of heights and exposed cliffs. 

There are great trails along the water and among the hills around Jordan Pond for some more relaxing hikes. For those with more time, a visit to Schoodic Peninsula and Isle Au Haut, which are beautiful and fare less touristed than the park’s main areas.

The World Heritage Site of the Everglades National Park is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast. A vibrant ecosystem, located in the sunny state of Florida, located only 1.5 hours west of Miami and Fort Lauderdale, it makes a great side trip to visit this heaven for lovers of outdoor activities. With loads of nature, many hiking trails to choose from, and water activities like the traditional airboat. 

During your trip to the Everglades, one of the East Coast must see places is the  Ten Thousand Islands Wildlife Refuge , the second largest mangrove forest in the world forming fascinating labyrinths of water and islands with very rich wildlife, including some endangered species. 

When you are in the area, explore the Everglades City, a charming fishing village with a population of 443 people, with great food, and a long history. It is known as the fishing and stone crab capital of Southwest Florida. 

The Everglade City is located on the western gateway to Everglades National Park, nearby Chokoloskee Island. If you are looking to spend a few days exploring this incredible area, the  Ivey House Everglades Adventures Hotel  is a great option. 

The best time to visit is between October and May when the weather is cooler and drier. The temperature and the humidity levels are lower, the mosquitoes are not around, and hurricane season has passed. During this time, the average temperature ranging between max 78.4°F (25.8°C) and min 59.7°F (15.4°C). 

It is also the best time to see the local wildlife. This is the time that manatees migrate to the Everglades. Also, the water levels drop during the dry season, and a large number of animals congregate around the water holes, making wildlife viewing an easy endeavour. 

If you visit during the summertime, between June and September, book your hikes and outdoor adventures for the morning, to avoid the hottest parts of the day and the frequent summer storms in the afternoon. Everglades National Park is one of the most beautiful places to vacation on East Coast.

Shenandoah National Park

One of the most beautiful places to go in East Coast United States is less than 2 hours from Washington, DC. Shenandoah National Park stretches along a ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering scenic views, classic park lodges, and excellent hiking. 

Skyline Drive winds along the mountain ridge for 105 miles and is the centrepiece of the park. Along the drive, 75 overlooks give easy access to eastern and westward views of the Virginia mountains and valleys. Over 100 trails, including the iconic Appalachian Trail, criss-cross the park. 

Many of the best things to do are in  Shenandoah National Park’s Central District . Here you can stay in either of two lodges, Skyland or Big Meadows, and explore the park’s natural and historic sites. Both lodges have restaurants for dining with a view and meals to-go. 

Popular hikes in the area include Stony Man, Dark Hollow Falls, Mary’s Rock, Hawksbill, and the wheelchair accessible Limberlost Trail. Visit the Harry Byrd Visitor Center in Big Meadows to learn about the park’s nature, the people who once lived here, and the effort to build Skyline Drive. 

Shenandoah is a year-round destination, but most facilities close in the winter. Late spring and early fall are two of the best times to visit when mountain laurel and fall foliage colour the views.

Silver Springs State Park, Florida

If you’re looking for the best places to visit on the sunshine coast, you’re in luck.  Florida is filled with hidden gems like Silver Springs State Park .  Tucked into the Ocala National Forest, this blue lagoon is naturally heated by underwater thermal vents. At only $6 a person for admission, you would think this haven would be overrun with tourists, but fortunately for you, it remains a secret to most travellers. 

You should plan to spend one whole day in the springs and be sure to bring a snorkel. Manatees frequent Silver Spring State Park lagoon during the winter months to keep warm, and it’s not uncommon to have the opportunity to swim with them. Even without the manatees, the clear blue water and a plethora of fish make for some good snorkelling and free diving. If you have a kayak or wish to rent one you can also leave the lagoon and explore the maze of mangroves that cut through Floridas’ centre. 

Most local Floridians spend the day swimming and BBQing during the hot and humid summer months, but the Silver Springs State Park is a perfect and stunningly beautiful destination to visit year-round.

Big Bend National Park, Texas

When it comes to National Parks in Texas, Big Bend National Park takes the cake. From hiking its high-elevation peaks, exploring the arid desert and lush-green valleys, taking a dip in its natural hot springs, beautiful stargazing, camping, and even a potential stop in Mexico for lunch, Big Bend National Park is one of the best places to vacation on the East Coast.

What makes Big Bend National Park so popular?

Big Bend is one of the largest parks in North America with over 800,000 acres to explore. Seclusion and quiet are guaranteed here. With its vastness, comes a diverse ecosystem which includes the Rio-Grande river, the Chihuahuan Desert and the Chisos mountain range. Each part of the park has a drastically different climate, flora, and fauna. Visit the Mc. Donald’s observatory: The star parties here are very popular with kids and adults alike. Don’t miss an opportunity to see the planets up close at one of these. 

Visit the Ghost town of Terlingua: The nearby town of Terlingua has some awesome food, lodging and ruins in its ghost town to explore. Enjoy a fun evening here.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

There is no doubt that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the United States and one of the best places to vacation on East Coast. This area is located along the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. The mountains are part of the Southern Appalachians. This is America’s most visited national park, but it is huge, so you will definitely be able to feel as if you are away from the bustle of everyday life.

The park has ridge upon ridge of seeming endless swaths of forest-covered mountains. The ever-present morning fog settles in the folds of these ridges to give this area the nickname “The Smoky Mountains.”

You will find many activities in this area. The hardest part will be choosing what to do. There are auto tour routes, bicycling, fishing, hiking, white water rafting, horseback riding, and much more.

This park is world-renowned for the diversity of its plant and animal life. It is considered a biologists paradise. One of the most popular things to do in the park is to observe wildlife, including elk and black bear. You will also be able to see old settler’s towns from the early 1800s to get a feel for what life was like in these mountains in the past.

Another fun activity is waterfall chasing. There are innumerable waterfalls in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Some are just a short walk off a roadway, and others are deep in woods down hard to find trails. The waterfalls in the park are simply stunning.

Most Beautiful Islands of the United States

Oahu, hawaii.

Hawaii is one of the best places to visit in the USA. It’s got the perfect climate, amazing landscapes and friendly locals. While you can be pretty happy visiting any of the Hawaiin Islands you should put Oahu to the top of your list. It is slightly less touristy than some of the other islands, especially if you stay on the North Shore, and it has some of the most ruggedly beautiful scenery. 

The North Shore is a mecca for surfers, and you’ll notice the laid-back surf vibes as soon as you arrive. The pace of life doesn’t move too quickly up there, which is a great way to live. One of the main attractions on the island of Oahu is Kualoa Regional Park, where the original Jurassic Park was filmed. 

You can go on a quad tour through the park or simply enjoy the views from a distance at the beach on the north end of Kaneohe Bay. The mountains here are formed into deep ridges covered in tropical greenery that truly gives off the Jurassic Park feel. From the beach, you’ll also get a cool view out over the water towards Mokoli’i island. 

If you’re looking for the ultimate beach to spend the day on then head to Lanikai Beach where you’ll find white sand and crystal-clear blue water. This is also one of the most protected beaches on the island, making it ideal for swimming, stand up paddleboarding and kayaking. You’ll also get a great view out to the Mokalua Islands right from the palm tree-lined beach. 

The Courtyard by Marriott Oahu North Shore is a great place to stay as it is right on the beach but also has a huge pool for you to relax in. You can find it near the town of Haleiwa on the North Shore of the island.

Kauai, Hawaii

The most beautiful destination in the USA has to be Kauai, Hawaii. It’s an island full of adventure and relaxation. With majestic coastlines and lush forests, white sand beaches and deep canyons, Kauai, Hawaii has got to be on your USA Bucket list!

This tiny island chain is known for its swaying palm trees, laid-back culture and beautiful beaches. In fact,  Kauai’s beaches  are some of the best in all of Hawaii. Offering incredible snorkelling, huge wintertime waves and plenty of surfing and boogie boarding, you could spend days beach-hopping on Kauai.

Perhaps even more unique than the beaches in Kauai are its mountainous terrain. The Waimea Canyon is known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. It’s massive, multi-coloured canyon makes its way from the island’s centre down to the ocean. 

The NaPali Coast along the northern shore is rugged, gorgeous and a truly breathtaking experience. Giant, jagged cliffs reach out of the sea up to the sky. The unexplored forests and waterfalls make for a truly unique destination.

Of course, all the beauty comes with a price. The best ways to see Kauai, Hawaii on a budget is to wait for affordable flights and find inexpensive accommodations. You will find the best deals on vacation properties and condos versus hotels.

Sanibel Island 

If your dream US destination includes a secluded tropical island and  beautiful beaches, Sanibel Island  may be just what you’re looking for. Tucked away just off Ft. Myers on Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast, Sanibel is a small barrier island, separated by a tiny inlet from its sister island of Captiva just next door.

These islands are a world away from the bustling nearby cities of Ft. Myers, Cape Coral, and Naples, and offer one of the best getaways in the US for a relaxed family gathering or romantic escape.

There’s plenty to enjoy on Sanibel if you love world-class shopping and dining. But it’s the quieter more natural attractions that draw most visitors — like cycling along quiet bike paths that run the entire length of the island or kayaking the JN “Ding” Darling Wildlife Preserve. Mackinac Island, Michigan 

Are you looking to visit the most beautiful destination in the USA? Hands down, the place is Mackinac Island, Michigan. Located between the upper and lower peninsulas of the state, this magical island is just about eight miles around and requires a ferry to get there. 

But wait, there’s more! The real impressive part of this island is that no cars are allowed on the island. Everything is done by foot, bike or horse and carriage. It is like stepping back in time. This is a top  travel bucket list  destination in the Midwest but is increasing in visibility around the world. 

Some of the must-do activities on the island are: a carriage tour to get the full overview of history and layout of the land, afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel, a rum runner form the Pink Pony, definitely walk around and taste fudge from all the shops – the island is known for its famous fudge, watch a sunrise on the lawn of Mission Point Resort and sunset from the West Bluff or the porch of the Grand Hotel, rent a bike and ride the outskirts of the island, visit Arch Rock, eat fancy for an evening at The Woods Restaurant, and if you are there during the Lilac Festival, take it all in. 

Popular dishes on the island include white fish anything (dip, sandwiches, spreads, etc.) and the pecan ball served at Grand Hotel restaurants.

If you are looking for an iconic hotel to stay in on the island, the Island House is perfectly situated just past the bustling Main Street and overlooks Lake Huron and the boats in the harbour.

Nantucket is a charming island which lies 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Along with Cape Cod and  Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket  has a well-earned reputation as an idyllic summer vacation destination.

Nantucket is easily accessible from the mainland and Martha’s Vineyard by ferry or plane. Thanks to the need to organise a flight or a ferry, the summer crowds on Nantucket are much less than on mainland Cape Cod. There are only about 10,000 year-round residents, and the population increases to about 50,000 in the summer months.

Nantucket is a small and fairly flat island which is easy to explore by foot or by cycle. There are two towns on the island with a long and narrow shape (approximately 15 miles long by 3 miles wide). It’s perfect for people who love the outdoors with hiking, cycling and water activities, such as kayaking and surfing. It’s easy to rent bicycles as well as water sports equipment. There are about 30 public beaches to explore as well. 

Historically, Nantucket was influential in the whale trade, which made the island very wealthy. Nowadays, there is a whaling museum and three lighthouses that attest to its maritime importance. Today, the island’s wealth is mainly derived from tourism to a well-heeled crowd. 

There are luxury hotels and charming B&B’s for accommodation as well as plenty of boutique shops and restaurants. The vibe is preppy chic. 

Located in a historic Greek Revival building, we like the Periwinkle Inn B&B which has a great location in town within walking distance of many activities. Created from a former lifesaving station, the HI Nantucket Hostel is also renowned for being very nice with a great location.

The 40 Best Beaches on the East Coast

You CAN find clear water and white sand along the Atlantic.

Nantucket, Massachusetts

At the island of Nantucket 's easternmost end, Great Point is one of the world's most secluded beaches—because you need a 4x4 and a beach permit to get there. Once you do, you'll find miles of beachfront, a historic lighthouse , and ample sea birds to admire. Madaket Beach, on the opposite end of the island, is another good choice—especially for sunset-watching.

Block Island, Rhode Island

Accessible by ferry, Block Island oozes New England charm. Mohegan Bluffs has clay cliffs and a view that reaches all the way to Montauk, Long Island, and it's well worth navigating the 141 wooden steps that lead down to the beach.

East Hampton, New York

Named the best beach in the country back in 2013, Main Beach in East Hampton is known for its wide stretch of sand plus a snack bar, bathrooms, and lockers. Keep in mind that free on-site parking permits are only available to village residents, but as with many Hamptons-area beaches, daily parking passes are available for a fee.

Palm Beach, Florida

It should come as no surprise that this one percenters' enclave has some of the best-groomed beaches on the East Coast. From snorkeling at John D. MacArthur State Park to spotting sea turtle hatchlings at Juno Beach, Palm Beach County has 47 miles of picturesque coastline to explore.

Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

Moshup Beach—also known as Aquinnah Beach—is at the coastal island's western end. The famous Gay Head Cliffs, a national landmark, provide a backdrop for this stunning setting, an isolated destination that requires a 10-minute walk from the parking lot.

Cape May, New Jersey

This Jersey Shore getaway's beaches have been declared the best in the state , and its collection of Victorian bed and breakfast destinations is a big draw for visitors from around the country. In fact, the charming town was listed as a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

Jekyll Island, Georgia

This 5,700-acre barrier island off the coast of Georgia is famous for its nesting sea turtles and hermit crabs. Glory Beach is so named because the producers of the 1989 movie Glory, starring Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington, built a long boardwalk to the beach that remains today.

Provincetown, Massachusetts

This charming town at the northernmost tip of Cape Cod is beloved for its (historically LGBTQ-friendly) mix of shops, galleries, and restaurants, and beautiful beaches—more than 30 miles of them.

Kiawah Island, South Carolina

Just 15 miles south of Charleston with some of the best golfing in the world and beaches that stretch for 10 miles, Kiawah Island has hosted notable names like Joe Biden, George Clooney, and George W. Bush. While the tony island is private, five-star hotel The Sanctuary offers access to non-residents.

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

If you're brave enough to climb the 257 steps to the top, the view from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse offers a spectacular sense of the surrounding area. The Outer Banks beach's abundance of seashells to collect is also a top draw, as is the unique topography shaped by wind, waves, and its location on one of North Carolina's barrier islands.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

The famous Virginia Beach boardwalk is 28 feet wide and stretches for three miles, with restaurants and a separate bike path for beachside rides.

Southampton, New York

About 15 miles west of East Hampton (and closer to NYC), Southampton boasts more than seven miles of shoreline. Head to Cooper's Beach on the East End, and make sure to check out some of the extravagant mansions lining Meadow Lane on the way—at least, what you can see over the hedges.

Madison, Connecticut

Connecticut's largest public beach, Hammonasset Beach State Park, is also one of its most popular. It includes two miles of sand along the relatively calm waters of the Long Island Sound, making it great for families.

Kennebunkport, Maine

Goose Rocks Beach offers nearly three miles of white sand along Maine's scenic coast. The Goose Rocks barrier reef—visible at low tide—protects it from choppy seas, and searching for marine life in the tidal pools is a popular activity with children.

Hampton Beach, New Hampshire

New Hampshire isn't generally known for its beaches. But with a boardwalk and family-friendly amenities like a waterfront RV campground in the adjacent Hampton Beach State Park, Hampton Beach is a notable slice of sand on the tiny 13-mile-long coastline.

Sand Beach, Maine

Nestled in the middle of Acadia National Park is Sand Beach . Accessible via Park Loop Road, the hidden gem is the perfect place to stop after a few hours of hiking. Though the water will likely be too cold for a swim, it offers stunning views of the ocean against a backdrop of mountains.

Harvey's Beach, Connecticut

Families will find lots to love at Harvey's Beach in the charming town of Old Saybrook. There are lifeguards for safe swimming, a concession stand, and a playground to entertain the kids. Daily and seasonal parking passes are available for non-residents for a fee.

Fire Island, New York

The small barrier island is a popular getaway destination for New York City residents in particular, offering about 8 miles of almost untouched oceanfront beaches and a variety of small towns. While some parts of Fire Island are quiet and residential, others attract tourists with their restaurants and shopping. Hang out on the beach for just a few hours and you're sure to spot a deer.

Bethany Beach, Delaware

Bethany Beach is just a few hours' drive from Washington, D.C., but feels like another world. This family-friendly spot has water sports and gorgeous oceanfront homes, as well as a boardwalk that features shopping, restaurants, mini-golf, and more.

Ocean City, Maryland

There's so much more to do in Ocean City beyond lying on its 10 miles of beach. Maryland's popular resort town offers a wide range of activities, including a three-mile boardwalk, restaurants, and bars.

One of the best lake vacation spots on the East Coast is Lake Kissimmee in Florida. After all, this is easily one of the most famous lakes in Florida , which is largely due to the fact that it’s well-located near Orlando and Disney World. 

However, in addition to a great location 70 miles south of Orlando, visitors will love the fact that the third-largest lake in the state is surrounded by vibrant forests and marshes that make up Lake Kissimmee State Park.

Lake Norman is the largest freshwater man-made lake in North Carolina , located in the Charlotte area. It’s called North Carolina’s “inland sea” because there are 520 miles of shoreline and its surface area is over 50 square miles!

There are many places to stay and things to do around the lake that make it a fantastic vacation spot , from lake activities like boating, waterskiing, kayaking, SUP, swimming, and jet skiing to hiking, biking (the area’s most extensive mountain biking trails are here), picnicking, camping , and lake photography .

There are parks with beach access locations, such as Ramsey Creek Park , plus dinner cruises with Queens Landing.

Beyond the lake, there’s much more to the area to fill out a well-rounded vacation, including exploring historic downtown Davidson ’s boutique shopping and restaurants like Toast. Nearby Birkdale is a popular outdoor shopping area with restaurants and a movie theater.

There are museums and activities in the area for all ages like Discovery Place Kids, Lazy 5 Ranch , camping at Lake Norman State Park , Carowinds Amusement Park, US National Whitewater Center, and much more.

Take a lake cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen to learn about the region’s rich history. A lunch or dinner cruise is a popular way to get out on the water, while couples will enjoy the champagne cruises offered.

Rent a bike at Local Motion and pedal the Burlington Greenway along the lake. You can cycle to several popular sand beaches for swimming and relaxing. For a longer ride, continue on the Colchester Causeway , a bike rail trail that crosses Lake Champlain. With views of the highest mountains in Vermont across the expanse of the lake, the Causeway is one of the best bike trails in Vermont .

Fort Mountain Lake, Georgia

Fort Mountain Lake is a lesser-known lake located in one of the largest state parks in Georgia , Fort Mountain State Park . The 17-acre lake is surrounded by mountains, so it’s an absolutely beautiful place to vacation on the East Coast ! The park itself is 4,058 acres, so there are plenty of things to do during your visit to this hidden-away spot.

For the most scenic views, head to the West Overlook and the Cool Springs Overlook . The West Overlook requires a short hike, but the Cool Springs Overlook does not. It’s just a few steps away from the closest parking lot.

There are many other hiking trails nearby , including a nature trail that will take you on a walk around the lake. If you wish to swim, there’s a sandy beach area that’s been roped off for safe swimming. You can also rent pedal boats, canoes, and kayaks nearby . There’s even a putt-putt golf course that families with kids will especially enjoy.

For the best weather, head to Fort Mountain Lake in late September or early October. Temperatures will still be comfortably warm then, but they won’t be as unbearably hot as mid-summer months!

Fort Mountain has fully equipped cottages for rent inside the park . They range in size from 2-bedroom to 3-bedroom and come fully furnished with 2 full bathrooms so that you can have a comfortable stay. For a camping experience instead, there are also 70 tent and RV campsites available as well. 

Cochituate State Park, Massachusetts

Cochituate State Park and Reservoir is an excellent destination for a vacation or weekend trip outside of Boston.

Families can enjoy renting kayaks to explore the interconnected lakes within the state park , which spans over 625 acres across three ponds: North Pond, Middle Pond, and South Pond. Additionally, visitors can take advantage of small hiking trails and a family-friendly swimming/picnic area.

Boating enthusiasts can bring their own boats, kayaks, or canoes, or rent them from the onsite Boating in Boston service.

The South Pond offers thrilling water activities such as tubing or waterskiing at speeds of up to 42 miles per hour. The Middle Pond, accessible from the main entrance and parking lots of Cochituate State Park, features a small swimming area with lifeguard supervision, a sandy beach, picnic areas, and restroom facilities.

Please note that during the summer months, the swimming area can become crowded with children enjoying the water. It is advisable to arrive early to secure a parking spot.

In addition to water sports, Cochituate’s Snake Brook Trail provides a pleasant and easily accessible 1.5-mile trail for a relaxing walk. Located between Rt 27 and Rt 30, this trail serves as an escape from the bustling nearby city life. Starting on N. Main Street (Rt 27), the trail continues all the way to Route 30, where you can catch a glimpse of Lake Cochituate by crossing the road.

Leashed dogs are welcome on the hiking trails and picnic areas in Cochituate State Park; however, please note that from May 14 to Labor Day, dogs are not allowed on the beach or in the swimming area.

Pennsylvania’s Raystown Lake offers one of the best lake vacation destinations on the East Coast . Located less than 4 hours from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and DC, in Huntingdon County , this 30-mile recreational lake offers 118 miles of mostly undeveloped (only 4%) coastline. It is the largest lake entirely within the Commonwealth.

One of the best ways to enjoy this marvelous lake is to rent a luxury houseboat for a weekend or a week from Seven Points Marina and pilot it to a private cove where you can completely disconnect. These upscale houseboats are equipped with full kitchens and baths . Many even have hot tubs and sliding boards. Tucked along the remote shoreline, you can enjoy the lake’s tranquility and outstanding sunsets.

If you’re not sure you want that much time on the water, kayaking and tubing are other fun unplugged aquatic activities.  Or set sail on the Proud Mary Paddleboat and enjoy a 90-minute narrated sightseeing cruise where you’ll learn about the lake’s history and some local lore.

If you prefer land-based activities, there are plenty. The Allegrippis trail system offers 30+ miles of some of Pennsylvania’s best mountain biking .

If you favor hiking then consider the Old Loggers Trail , a popular easy 4.5-mile hiking trail accessed from the recreation area. For more of a challenge, try the Terrace Mountain Trail , a rugged 27-mile path along the lake’s east side offering scenic vistas.

Step away from the lake to visit Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks , an exceptional underground attraction featuring two incredible limestone caverns filled with exquisite rock formations.

Or step back in time aboard the East Broad Top Railroad , where you can experience the scenic rural countryside, learn about the region’s railroading history, and create lasting memories.

Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire

Lake Winnipesaukee is a stunning and popular destination located in the heart of New Hampshire. Known for its crystal-clear waters, charming towns, and a plethora of recreational activities , the lake offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

The lake is accessible by car and is roughly a 2-3 hour drive from Boston , Massachusetts, and a 5-6 hour drive from New York City . Manchester-Boston Regional Airport is the closest major airport.

From one of my favourite cities in Maine all the way down to a secret Florida island, the United States’ eastern coast is home to some of the nation’s most magical destinations. Let’s get off the beaten path and check them out! 

1. Biddeford, Maine

After years of dreaming about visiting Maine, I finally did it. And already I can’t wait to go back. 

Filled to the brim with secret beaches and charming towns, Maine will always leave you wanting more.

Of course, the ever-popular town of Portland is amazing; however, just below it is one of the best hidden gems on the East Coast: Biddeford.

Biddeford might be Maine’s youngest city. But it’s bursting with exciting things to see and do. Here are some top recommendations: 

• Fortune’s Rock Beach:  a secret 2-mile sandy beach that’s beautiful, quiet, and pet-friendly.
• Clifford Park:  a community park with trails, wildlife, and waterways.
• Ferry Beach State Park:  a peaceful park with trails and beach access.
• Elements Books Coffee Beer:  eclectic bookshop with coffee, beer, and walls lined with new and used books.

Where to Stay in Biddeford

When I visited Maine, I was travelling in my camper van. It’s perfect for this way of travel as there are many established campgrounds around the area. 

Sun Outdoors  is a resort-style campground close to the beach that’s got it all. For a more laid-back camping experience, check out  Homestead by the River .

If you prefer vacation rentals or hotel stays, there are tons.  Mermaid House is a cool vacation home perfect for a family (or two) or a group of friends.

2. Stowe, Vermont

When we think of Vermont, we think of cold and snowy weather. Naturally, this makes for excellent skiing vacations if that’s your thing.

However, if you’re like me and winter activities really aren’t your thing, Stowe is the perfect summer destination to check out. 

Located in the mountains in northern Vermont, Stowe boasts beautiful nature trails, mountain scenery, and cosy villages. These are some of the best things to see and do: 

• Stowe Cider:  quirky taproom with games and delicious ciders.
• Sunset Rock:  easy, fun hike through the woods that ends at an overlook of Stowe downtown and surrounding mountains.
• Gold Brook Covered Bridge: a charming wooden bridge connected to local folklores; offers a great photo op. 

Where to Stay in Stowe

From cosy inns to mountain resorts, Stowe offers some of the most unique places to stay on the East Coast. 

The historic  Hob Knob Inn  is nestled in the forest, while  Goldilocks Cabin  is just a few minutes from Stowe’s historic village.

3. Oaks Bluff, Massachusetts

Suppose you’ve dreamed of visiting the iconic Martha’s Vineyard but also want to explore hidden gem vacation spots on the East Coast, then Oaks Bluff is the ideal spot. 

Oaks Bluff is a historical town on the water offering a perfect getaway for both fun and relaxation. It’s home to incredible beaches and iconic gingerbread house cottages. 

So, what else is worth checking out in Oaks Bluff? 

• Ocean Park: waterfront views, grassy areas, and gorgeous homes.
• Waban Park:  an event space by the beach that often hosts music, food, and arts festivals. 
• Eastville Point Beach:  stunning blue waters and unmatched sunset views. 

Where to Stay in Oaks Bluff

While Oaks Bluff is small, there’s no shortage of accommodations. Whether you’re interested in camping, lowkey hotels, or fancy inns, there’s something for every kind of traveller. 

One of the most unique places to stay on the East Coast is actually right here in Oaks Bluff –  Narragansett House . This bed & breakfast features bright, charming guest rooms with unique decor.

4. Block Island, Rhode Island

If a serene beach getaway like those you see in the movies is what you’re looking for, Block Island is that place! 

You can travel to this small island by plane or a short ferry ride from the mainland. Once you arrive, you can head to any spot by the ocean for endless miles of free, public beachfront and many secluded areas.

While relaxing on the seafront is on everyone’s to-do list in Block Island, there are other activities well-worth checking out, too.  

• Rodman’s Island:  a   large nature reserve with local wildlife, a hiking area, and beach access.
• Mohegan Bluffs:  100+ steps that lead to the top of 200-foot cliffs surrounding a magical secluded beach.
• Southeast Lighthouse:  a stunning 1800s lighthouse on top of a cliff. 

Tip –   I recommend renting a bicycle and wandering around the Island, where you can find many streets lined with shops, restaurants, and historic sites. 

Where to Stay on Block Island

Like many Northeast destinations, Block Island is dotted with inns and hotels.  The Sullivan House  sits next to the beach, and its romantic charm makes for the ideal getaway for travel couples. 

Then you have beach house resorts like  Block Island Beach House , which is perfect for group vacations with friends.

5. Madison, Connecticut

Just 20 minutes from the more well-known city of New Haven, Madison is one of the best small-town East Coast hidden gems. 

Madison is a great place to live like a local for a few days. Its walkable area makes it easy to explore its fascinating culture and nature.

Be sure to check out these spots: 

• Hammonasset Beach State Park:  a relaxing beach with a boardwalk, trails, and camping.
• Timberlands:  a massive hiking area surrounded by natural beauty.
• Downtown Madison: walkable area close to Tuxis Pond with boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and more.

If you enjoy camping, you’re going to love Madison for its many campgrounds!

The Homestead is a fan-favourite accommodation with its private beach area and homey decor. There are also charming hotels and cosy inns.

6. Ithaca, New York

On a recent road trip to the Northeast, Ithaca quickly became one of my favourite East Coast hidden gems. I’ve even considered moving there because I love it so much! 

What I appreciated most about Ithaca is that it’s bursting with friendly locals – a far cry from your typical New York vibe.

It’s also situated next to the beautiful Cayuga Lake, with most sites offering picture-perfect views.

While Ithaca is mainly known for Cornell University, this quaint city has no shortage of fun activities such as:

• Stewart Park:  a gorgeous lakefront park.
• Indian Creek Farm:  a produce market with a massive farm open to exploring. 
• Downtown Ithaca:  an eclectic area with shopping and dining.
• Wells Fall:  a short walk to a beautiful waterfall. 

Where to Stay in Ithaca

When I went to Ithaca, I was  van-camping  and stayed at a Hipcamp. With that said, there are also plenty of great hotel options in Ithaca. 

Cayuga Lake Inn  is a cosy bed & breakfast with lake views. To stay in the heart of downtown, check out the  Ithaca Marriott .

7. Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Rehoboth Beach is a vibrant beach town perfect for a summer trip to the ocean. It boasts 30 miles of stunning coastline and offers tons of beach activities. 

While many Delaware locals love a trip to Rehoboth, it’s often overlooked by beach bums looking for their next vacation destination.

Its most famous attraction is the beach boardwalk, lined with shops and restaurants. Other activities and sites to enjoy in Rehoboth Beach are:

• Poodle Beach:  a change of scenery from the main beach that dog beachgoers adore.
• Lake Gerar  Park: a   tranquil lakeside park with a walking path and fishing pier.
• Funland:  a small but enjoyable amusement park.
• Gordons Pond State Park:  a waterfront state park with nature trails and beach access.

Where to Stay in Rehoboth Beach

While there aren’t many hotels in Rehoboth, the best ones are close to the beach. 

Ocean Glass Inn  offers a laid-back beach vibe, while  The Bellmoor Inn and Spa  is a luxurious, adults-only hotel.

8. Roanoke, Virginia

If you’re looking for a unique place to visit on the East Coast with tons of outdoor adventures, you’ll love Roanoke. 

It’s nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers incredible views alongside endearing small-town charm.

It’s easy to spend your entire trip outdoors. Here are some of my favourite activities in Roanoke:

• Smith Mountain Lake:  the second largest freshwater lake in VA, where you can go camping and enjoy water activities.
• Mill Mountain Park:  home to the iconic Roanoke star and boasts scenic hiking and biking trails atop the mountain.
• Carvins Cove Natural Reserve: a massive park with various trails and incredible views. 

Where to Stay in Roanoke

I prefer camping while exploring Roanoke to enjoy the unmatched outdoor experiences. Smith Mountain Lake or Explore Park are both great options, but there are many others. 

If hotels or vacation rentals are more your style, you can also find those in Roanoke.  Shirley’s Bed & Breakfast  is my top choice – a log homestay tucked away from the hustle.

9. Little Switzerland, North Carolina

Little Switzerland is easily one of the coolest places to visit on the East Coast. 

This charming mountain community is situated 3,000 feet above sea level in the  North Carolina  mountains. Honestly, the views are some of the best I’ve ever seen!

While you could easily spend your day sitting on a vacation rental deck taking in the scenery, be sure to check out these Little Switzerland adventures : 

• Emerald Village:  a group of 12 gem, mining, and historical attractions (closed during winter).
• Grassy Creek Falls:  a large waterfall surrounded by nature trails. 
• The DiamondBack Road:  a winding mountain highway that offers incredible views.

Where to Stay in Little Switzerland

I recommend taking advantage of one of Little Switzerland’s many inns and lodges in the mountains. 

You’ll soon see why they are considered unique places to stay on the East Coast, with each providing a one-of-a-kind experience.

10. Greenville, South Carolina

Greenville is an up-and-coming city nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Once a small town, it’s now booming with fantastic food, outdoor adventure, and cultural events.

With various things to do and see (and eat!) in Greenville, you can easily spend a week or two. Here are some of my top recommendations:

• Falls Park:  a nature lover’s paradise with green spaces, benches, walking paths, and gardens. 
• Downtown Greenville: an energetic area bursting with restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops. Check out Tupelo Honey for a delicious southern fare.
• Paris Mountain State Park:  a beautiful park with fishing, swimming, hiking, and biking.

Where to Stay in Greenville

As Greenville has started growing, you can find more and more vacation rentals and hotels throughout the city. 

Aloft  is a modern hotel in the heart of downtown Greenville, where you can enjoy an on-site bar, restaurant, and swimming pool.

11. Folly Beach, South Carolina

Folly Beach is one of the best hidden gem vacation spots on the East Coast. 

Having lived nearby in  Charleston for many years, Folly Beach holds a special place in my heart. This small but lively beach town offers the perfect getaway if you’re looking to unwind. 

Aside from lying on the beach and enjoying water activities at Folly Beach, here are some other top things to see and do:

• Dining:  Lost Dog and Taco Boy are amongst some of the best restaurants on Folly Beach.
• James Island County Park:  a tranquil park with hiking, biking, picnicking, and camping.
• Downtown Charleston: a   bustling area with shopping, dining, nightlife, and historical sites; about a 15-minute drive from Folly Beach. 

Where to Stay on Folly Beach

My favourite places to stay on Folly Beach are vacation rentals near the beach and camping at James Island County Park. There are also several great hotels, including the stunning Tides Hotel located right on the water.

12. Helen, Georgia

I recently visited Helen, Georgia and was blown away! I never expected this unassuming city to be amongst the cool places to visit on the East Coast. 

When I went for its iconic Oktoberfest event, I quickly learned that Helen has a lot to offer for a weekend getaway.

This adorable mountain town is known for Bavarian-style buildings, but that’s not all. Be sure also to c heck out these cool places and experiences:

• Hardman Farm Heritage Trail:  a moderate, peaceful hike along the River.
• Habersham Winery:  a locally-owned winery well worth a visit.
• Unicoi Hill Park:  a   park off the beaten path with a waterfall, walking paths, and grassy areas. 
• Downtown Helen:  a unique Bavarian-style area with shops, restaurants, and pubs. 

Where to Stay in Helen

As Helen started welcoming travellers several years back, hotels and inns have been popping up around the city. 

Valhalla Resort Hotel  looks like something out of a movie with stunning mountain panorama and distinctive decor. There are also simpler hotels closer to the city’s centre.

13. Amelia Island, Florida

Last up for the best hidden gem vacation spots on the East Coast is another dreamy beach destination. And a must-visit if you’re ever planning a trip to Florida . 

Amelia Island is a barrier island situated on Florida’s Atlantic coast. With miles of sandy beaches and an abundance of local wildlife, it’s a nature lover’s paradise!

So, what is there to do on Amelia Island aside from relaxing on the beach?

• Egan’s Creek Greenway:  an   Instagram-worthy creekside trail with unmatched views and unique wildlife sightings.
• Fort Clinch State Park:  miles of nature trails and coastline.
• Historic Fernandina Beach District: an area boasting trendy shops, restaurants, and bars along with some historical sites. 

Where to Stay on Amelia Island

There’s a great selection of accommodations on Amelia Island, with various hotels and vacation rental companies. I recommend splurging on a hotel that’s close to the water, like the quaint  Seaside Amelia Inn .

Some people also opt to stay closer to the city by Fernandina Beach. While the city centre is just a couple of miles from Amelia Island, there’s a lot more to do.

 Personally, I prefer the more tranquil vibe on Amelia Island.

East Coast Beach Vacations For Families

W e love visiting the beach on vacation, and luckily, there are so many beautiful East Coast beach destinations for families. While many of these are within easy driving distance for us to visit, there are some that are more of a family vacation destination.

Here are some of the best spots for East Coast beach vacations. Did we miss your favorite best East Coast beach towns? If so, leave us a comment below.

Best East Coast Beaches for Families

Massachusetts beaches.

My home state of Massachusetts features a number of great beaches for families. Most people immediately think of Cape Cod for Massachusetts beach vacations and with good reason.

Cape Cod features miles of coastline filled with great Atlantic Ocean beaches and the Cape Cod National Seashore Park. These are among the best east coast beaches for families. In addition, there are lots of other fun family activities on Cape Cod, including the Cape Cod Rail Trail , the Cape Cod Baseball League, and the Cape Cod inflatable park.

While there are many options, some of our favorites are Old Silver Beach in Falmouth, Smugglers Beach in Yarmouth, and the beaches of Provincetown and the Cape Cod National Seashore. These quintessential beach towns offer delicious seafood restaurants in addition to beaches and are so much fun.

There are also the islands – Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. These islands are more of a vacation spot and not really a day trip, but they are perfect summer vacation destinations. If you plan to visit one of these destinations, I’d recommend that you plan a longer trip of three days or more.

Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard offer more than just beaches and get very busy in the summer. You’ll want to book your vacation rental home or hotel well in advance. The ferries also book up in advance – especially the car ferries.

If you are interested in more of an island day trip, the Boston Harbor Islands are a great option. These islands, which are part of the National Park system, are accessible via public ferry. Some of them have beaches and are great for a day trip if you are visiting Boston for the day or live locally.

North of Boston, you’ll find Cape Ann. Cape Ann offers beautiful beaches that are great for a day visit. When we visit the beach in the summer, typically we’ll head north rather than south.

Beaches on Cape Ann include Good Harbor and Wingaersheek Beaches in Gloucester . Parking lots for these beaches tend to fill up very early on the weekends and on hot days, so go early.

The best: Our pick in Massachusetts is Old Silver Beach in Falmouth (stay at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel ). It’s a beautiful stretch of beach that includes a public beach as well as the part in front of the hotel. The Sea Crest offers chair service so you’ll feel pampered the whole time you are there. It’s a casual beach resort that is great for families.

• Located right on the beach
• Indoor and outdoor pools
• Chair and umbrella service
• Beach bar with food

Maine and New Hampshire Beaches

While many people think of the northern New England states of Maine and New Hampshire as ski destinations, they are also great East Coast beach destinations.

One of my favorite beaches to visit is Ogunquit , located in Maine right by the New Hampshire border. Ogunquit is a vibrant beach community with hotels (like the Meadowmere , where we stayed), a local summer theater program, shops, restaurants, and more.

While you could go to Ogunquit for the day, I’d definitely recommend staying there for at least one night. It’s a really fun town, and there’s a lot to do.

North of Ogunquit is some other Maine beaches, including Kennebunk and Acadia National Park. Just keep in mind that the water temps of these beaches never get high, even in August.

In New Hampshire, on the Massachusetts border, you’ll find Hampton Beach. This area includes hotels, restaurants, and other family activities like mini golf and arcades. Because New Hampshire doesn’t have much Atlantic coastline, this really is your only option for a New Hampshire ocean beach.

You can combine visits to both Ogunquit and Hampton Beach with other popular family destinations in the area, like Portland, Maine , Kittery, Maine , and Portsmouth, NH.

The best: Our pick in Maine/New Hampshire is Ogunquit. The town offers a trolley, restaurants, hotels, and shops, and is so walkable. You won’t want to leave.

• Family rooms

Rhode Island Beaches

I grew up in Rhode Island, and I definitely didn’t appreciate the gorgeous beaches until I got older. Although Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States, it boasts an impressive 384 miles of coastline .

Many visitors to the area like visiting the beaches of Newport and Newport County. These include Goosewing Beach in Little Compton, Easton’s Beach (also called First Beach) in Newport, Second and Third Beaches in Middletown, and Fort Adams State Park (in Newport).

On the other side of the state, you’ll find even more beaches and beach towns. These include Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly, Scarborough Beach in Narragansett, and Narragansett Town Beach in Narragansett.

This area of the state is a beautiful vacation destination for a low-key beach vacation. There are many vacation rentals in the area. Since Rhode Island is a small state, you can easily visit the entire state during your vacation.

In addition to the mainland state, Block Island has become a popular summer vacation destination . Block Island is a very small island, but it has some fun activities for families.

The best: As a native Rhode Islander, it is tough to choose just one. Easton’s Beach (First Beach) is centrally located for a Newport family vacation, and it also offers a small aquarium. But, if you are looking for the best sand and water, I’d definitely recommend Goosewing Beach in Little Compton, RI. It’s more of a drive, but is worth it!

Mid-Atlantic Beaches

The mid-Atlantic area of the United States also offers some beach destinations for families. Like the beaches in New England, the mid-Atlantic beaches are more popular in the summer months, due to the weather.

In Maryland, you’ll find Ocean City Beach, which is free and offers a 3-mile boardwalk. Ocean City Maryland hosts events in the city, including fireworks, beach Olympics, and more.

Rehoboth Beach is located in Delaware. It offers a one-mile boardwalk that hosts activities throughout the year. Both Ocean City Beach and Rehoboth Beach are regularly listed on “best of” beach lists for both the United States and the East Coast.

I recently returned from a vacation to Bethany Beach Delaware. This beach town offers the Bethany Beach Boardwalk , which borders the public beach. The boardwalk area is home to many restaurants and shops, as well as a bandstand that offers regular summer programming. It’s a fun area, and a great place to spend a summer vacation.

A bit further south is Virginia Beach . This town, named for the beach, is actually home to several different beaches. Virginia Beach is a fun beach community offering many delicious restaurants, as well as an aquarium. You could definitely have a fun family vacation here.

The best: We love Virginia Beach because there’s so much to do in the area. In addition to the beach, I definitely recommend visiting the fantastic aquarium.

• Suites with kitchenettes
• Indoor/outdoor pool
• Family activities

Southern Beaches

The southern states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia are home to many popular beaches. As you head south, beach season is definitely longer. So, these spots can actually be great beach destinations even in the late spring.

Barrier islands such as Tybee Island, the Outer Banks, Kiawah Island, Daufuskie Island, Jekyll Island Georgia , and Hilton Head Island offer beaches as well as family activities, restaurants, golf, and more.

The best: We loved our visit to Tybee Island. It’s near Savannah , so it’s perfect for a day trip. Yet, it has such a fun atmosphere with delicious restaurants. If you want to stay right on the island, we recommend getting a vacation rental because there aren’t many hotels.

Florida Beaches

Sunshine state is known for its beaches on both sides of the state. On the East Coast of Florida, you’ll find Atlantic Ocean beaches, while the West Coast features the white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.

There are so many beautiful beaches in Florida, so you have plenty of options. With a number of world-class theme parks, nature activities, and other things to do in Florida, you can definitely combine a beach trip with a longer Florida vacation .

Beaches on the East Coast of Florida include the barrier island Amelia Island, as well as Daytona Beach, Hollywood Beach, and South Beach. Amelia Island is a fun family travel destination because there are several resorts (including the Omni Amelia Island Plantation ) that include many activities that appeal to kids.

On the Gulf Coast , the beaches have beautiful white sand. We recently spent spring break on Clearwater Beach and loved the beautiful beach. It’s been rated the top beach in the United States, and I can definitely understand why. Visit in the spring for the incredibly fun Sugar Sand Festival .

Destin and Fort Walton are two other Florida beach destinations that are popular with families. Beloved by Southerners, these beaches are a bit of a hidden gem with others.

With warmer weather than the rest of the East Coast , Florida beaches are more of a year-round destination (although they can be chilly in the winter months and early spring/late fall).

The best: In a state filled with gorgeous beaches, Clearwater Beach definitely stands out. It offers sugar-white sand beaches, family festivals throughout the year, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, delicious restaurants, and dozens of hotel options.

Travel | top 10 u.s. vacation destinations from men’s journal includes a california charmer.

Looking for vacation inspiration? Men’s Journal recently ranked the best vacation destinations in the country, including everything from beach towns to gastronomic treasures and adventure-packed gems. It’s a coast-to-coast, border-to-border array of 50 tempting spots, complete with tips on when to go, where to stay and what to do — and eat — while you’re there.

The top spot goes to Ouray, a Colorado mountain town the magazine editors say feels “like you’ve stepped foot in a live-action REI commercial.” But California gets several sensational shout-outs, starting with the coastal town of SLO — San Luis Obispo — at No. 3, thanks to its balmy temperatures, small town vibe and proximity to surfer-friendly beaches, rolling vineyards and winery tasting rooms.

San Francisco comes in at No. 14, with a must-see list that hits all the biggies — the Golden Gate Bridge, the California Academy of Sciences, Alcatraz and all the other places tourists congregate, snap photos and chatter about “San Fran,” the SoCal sobriquet that makes locals shudder. (Hmm, do the denizens of Los Angeles — No. 11, by the way — roll their eyes when we refer to “SoCal”?)

Also on the SoCal list: San Diego, with its 70 miles of soft, sandy beaches and lush, museum-packed Balboa Park, sits at No. 21.

This East Coast Destination Was Just Named the Best U.S. Small Town to Retire

The winning community is located in Pennsylvania.

For many people, retirement means enjoying life at a slower pace in a tranquil place away from the hustle and bustle of cities. A 2022 study revealed that 45 percent of Americans wanted to retire in a small or beach town versus only 10 percent — in cities. 

So GoBankingRates.com surveyed communities nationwide with populations between 1,000 and 10,000 residents and ranked them for income, livability, monthly expenses, crime rates, and quality of life to find the best small towns to retire. The winner is a community in Pennsylvania.

Camp Hill, located in Cumberland Valley along Susquehanna River a short drive from the state's capital, Harrisburg, which was named last year as the best retirement community in the country , has a population of a little over 8,000. According to the website, retirees would need $3,356 on average to cover monthly expenses, of which $1,454 would be for housing. The town's quality of life score is 92, with a total crime rate of just 9.4 per capita.

Camp Hill is also popular with families in Cumberland County for its excellent public schools, and recently, Niche.com ranked it the second best for retirement in the area . About 15 percent of its residents are aged 65 and over. And while the cost of living here is a little higher than the nation's average, the median home value is lower—$302,958.

Camp Hill is a quaint small town with plenty in store for its senior citizens, especially if they like to stay active—it has over a dozen public parks and trails and is just 25 minutes away from Roundtop Mountain Resort with ski trails for skiers of all levels.

Second on BankingRates.com's list is Northville in Michigan, west of Detroit, with a livability score of 86. Here, retirees need $3,383 for monthly expenses, of which $1,545 for rent. 

And the bronze medal goes to Fort Mitchell in Kentucky, part of Cincinnati's larger metropolitan area. The town's livability score is the same as Northville's — 86; however, monthly costs are slightly lower — $3,347 and $1,495 for housing.

The Gili Islands: the scenery around here is what most envision when they drum up mental imagery of "tropical paradise". This idyllic archipelago might be tiny in regards to landmass, but it's anything but small when it comes to stunning marine life, friendly vibes, and gorgeous views. You'll get a wildly different experience depending on where you rock up onshore – seeing as Bintang-fueled day parties, epic undersea experiences, and stunningly tranquil hideaways all coexist in unique harmony across this chain of islands.

Gili Trawangan , known for its thumping nightlife, is the largest and most visited of all three – where you'll encounter a busy port and myriad shops and restaurants on arrival. Meander over to Trawangan's west coast, however, and you'll find a serene setting with marvelous views of Bali off in the distance. Little Gili Meno sits quietly in the middle, a peaceful neighbor to Trawangan's excitement where you can dive into crystal clear waters and also authentic Sasak culture. 

To the east, cheerful Gili Air combines a beautiful laidback pace with an energized social vibe – a place where you can laze about all day long under the shade of a palm tree or grab a Bintang beer and befriend people from both near and far.

1. Snorkeling and diving spots throughout the Gilis

Best for experiencing Indonesia's stunning marine life

To visit the Gilis without snorkeling or diving would be like visiting France without eating a croissant – one hell of a lost opportunity for something great. With around 25 different dive sites scattered around the three Gilis, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to some of the world's most dazzling marine life and crystal clear waters.

Most snorkel and dive boats cruise around to the same well-known sites regardless of which island you embark from, sampling the surrounding protected marine area in all its glory. Off the coast of Gili T: Shark Point , Turtle Heaven , and Manta Point are aptly named for their undersea populations. Schools of fish flutter about impressive coral formations off the coast of Meno at Meno Wall and Simon's Reef . Just pack swimwear and get on a boat; you won't be disappointed.

2. The energetic east coast of Gili Trawangan

Best for eating, drinking, and socializing

Love it or leave it, Gili Trawangan's east coast has become a bustling little strip full of everything from booze-fueled party hotspots to dive shops, airy little cafes, and tourism operators. Make it your go-to destination if you're looking for a hopping social scene or delicious local eats – whether devouring Indonesian classics at the Trawangan night market or grabbing a pizza just up the road. If rest and quiet is what you're after, you're going to want to make a beeline for the opposite coast of the island, where crowds are scant and swim spots are ripe for the picking. 

3. The tallest point in the Gili Islands

Best place for getting a lay of the land

If reaching the highest landmass to survey surroundings is your thing, then boy, do we have good news for you: Gili Trawangan's tallest point – Gili Trawangan Hill – is easily reached by foot. This 15 to 20 minute hike (depending on your cardio abilities) is located in the southwest corner of Gili Trawangan, offering sweet views of nearby Lombok's rugged coast and beautiful Bali off to the west. You'll trek through some shrubbery on the way up, but when the vegetation clears, it's a pretty great spot to kick back and get a lay of the land.

Best place for watching sunsets

Competitive opinions abound when it comes to deliberating over the best sunset spots in the Gili Islands. Tried and true, there's something about Gili Air's northwest corner that just keeps us going back. Between the friendly vibes, soft white sand, and stellar views of Trawangan, Meno, and Bali's towering volcano Gunung Agung in the distance – it's pretty hard to beat. Come for a coconut at a sun-bleached beach bar and stay for when the evening energy picks up.

5. Gili Meno's traditional Sasak village

Best place to experience Indonesian culture and heritage

Grab a bicycle and cycle inward down Gili Meno's quiet sandy pathways to discover a traditional Sasak village, where the quiet hum of family life moves on throughout the day. Here, farmers' cattle meander through palm-shaded fields, and the lovely aroma of Indonesian cuisine can be experienced while passing by warungs (family-run restaurants). While you're never far from the beach in the Gili Islands, be sure to cover up when you're not right on the shoreline. Most people in the Gilis are Muslim, and dressing appropriately is an important component of respect.

6. NEST underwater sculptures

Best place for feeling like you're in Atlantis

You might've seen it on your Instagram feed, but NEST underwater sculptures aren't just fodder for social media stardom – they're absolutely worth seeing in real life. One of the Gilis' must-visit attractions, this underwater sculpture features 48 human figures connected in a circle. Since it was constructed from environmental-grade concrete, the sculpture is slowly becoming a part of the marinescape – frequented by schools of fish (and also people with GoPros and flippers). Regardless of the often sizable group of snorkelers, it's still really cool to see. A word of the wise: you can simply swim right up to it from the coast of Meno, near BASK resort. It's not far offshore.

7. The charming streets of Gili Air

Best for eating and shopping for various trinkets

Right off the southward facing port of Gili Air, a small network of tiny streets beckon with plentiful bright eateries and browse-worthy shops. The vibes are undeniably good, and you can easily grab a nasi goreng (fried rice) or fresh Italian gelato depending on whether you're feeling salty or sweet. While it's hard to choose favorites, some of the Gilis' best places to stay are around here – where the car and motorcycle-free pathways are never congested, but still full of life. Stop in the area for a meal or a beverage, then embark on a wander in literally any direction to make your way to the beach.

8. Shipwrecks engulfed in marine life

Best place for scuba diving

Upping the ante on the Gilis' diving appeal, three different shipwrecks lie on the seafloor surrounding the islands. The Glenn Nusa Wreck – the only intentional wreck of the bunch – was cleaned and purposely sunk back in 2016 to serve as a dive site and also artificial reef. In between Gili and Lombok's mainland, the Japanese Wreck went down in the 1940's, with unclear reasoning as to why it sank. The Bounty Wreck went down off of Gili Meno's southwest coast around 15 years ago during a severe storm, and is suitable for all levels of divers.

9. Gili Trawangan's laidback west coast

Best for escaping the noise while staying close to the action

Unlike the busy east coast of Gili T, the west coast brings a completely different mood – one of relaxation, typically with a sweet coconut or frosty cold Bintang within arm's reach. While a sprinkling of large scale developments punctuate the coast, there are still plenty of open sandy stretches to bliss out and forget about the world for a little bit. More visitors arrive around sunset when the sun hangs low over Bali's outline in the distance, but it's still easy to have plenty of space to yourself.
