Presently, the Tata Safari Storme is the latest upgraded version on offer by the Indian automaker. The ORVMs are chrome finished and apart from these minimal changes the badges are all new. The rear is identical to its predecessor. INTERIOR The interiors of the Safari Storme are modern and premium and boast more convenience centric features. The new and modern features include a reworked signature steering wheel with controls mounted for audio and telephony, along with single DIN music system integrated within the central console. There is adequate leg/shoulder/head room for all occupants and, the seats feel comfortable but the rear row lacks the under thigh support. For storage purposes, the rear row armrest has been tweaked and now comes with 2 foldable bottle holders and a tray, along with a large glove box, liter-class space on door pockets, small pockets on the console and one large cup-holder along with a storage tray. ENGINE, PERFORMANCE, RIDE, HANDLING & SAFETY The Tata Safari Storme is offered with two powertrain options – 150Ps and 156Ps. The 2.2L 16-valve DOHC VTT VARICOR common rail diesel engine which churns out 150Ps of power delivers a peak torque of 320Nm and comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. While the 2.2L 16-valve DOHC VTT VARICOR common rail diesel engine which churns out 156Ps of power delivers a peak torque of 400Nm and comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The ride and handling is also sorted with double wishbone type suspension with coil spring over shock absorber in the front and coil spring type 5-link rigid axle suspension at the rear. The Safari Storme runs on 235/70 R16 all terrain pattern tyre. For the braking, the Force One is equipped with ventilated disc brakes in the front and drum brakes with auto adjuster at the rear (base trim) and rear disc brakes (all trims). Test drive: Tata Safari Storme

By GQ Staff

Image may contain Logo Symbol Trademark and Text

A capable off-roader that can roll in the mud, but still looks good enough to take to a black-tie event

The Tata Safari was one of the first real Indian SUVs we could buy before we had the likes of Scorpios, Fortuners and Captivas prowling the Indian roads. Expectedly, the Safari soon came to enjoy a steady fan following amongst Indian SUV buyers. Nearly 12 years after the first Safari rolled out of the production line in Pimpri, Tata Motors has overhauled the interior and exterior – and they’ve called it the Storme.

The Storme comes with a brand new front end. Gone is the smiley, traditional Tata face up front, now replaced with a more purposeful and aggressive front end replete with flared headlamps, a new honeycomb grille job, bumpers and a flatter front. The restyling continues to the rear of the car with flatness being the overarching theme. New tail lamps and the repositioned spare wheel, which now goes under the SUV, cleans up the rear.

Tata seems to have borrowed the styling from Land Rover, thereby retaining a rugged, yet contemporary appeal. Stepping into the Safari Storme, and settling down into the high-seating position offers a throne-like commanding view of the road up front. While the previous-generation of Safaris had bad plastics, yawning panel gaps and overall drab interiors, the Storme comes with soft touch plastics, faux wood inserts and a new dashboard design. While the seven-seater is comfortable for five adults, the last two side-facing jump seats in the boot are best used for shorter distances. In terms of feature and creature comforts, Tata has given the Storme a reverse camera which displays on the inner rear view mirror, reverse parking sensors, a DVD touchscreen infotainment system and safety features like twin airbags, ABS and EBD.

Powered by a 2.2 liter 140 hp - 320 Nm VariCOR turbo-diesel engine, the motor feels smooth and responsive. The gearbox housing has been changed to reduce pesky vibes. The 0-100 kph sprint comes up in about 16 seconds, and if you were to give it enough road, it will top out at about 150 kph (impressive for an SUV that weighs close to two tonnes). Transmission is by means of a five-speed gearbox, which did feel notchy although Tata claims to have improved shift quality.

While the throws were short, the shift quality leaves a lot to be desired. The Safari has always been a steady handler, and the Storme now gets the lighter hydroformed chassis from the Aria. Handling is also quite good for an SUV, probably better than even a Scorpio. That said, the Storme being a body-on-ladder top-heavy SUV, it does have its limitations in the twisties and doesn't like changing direction rapidly. Off the road, the Storme is quite a good package for soft off-roading and mud plugging, what with the shift-on-the-fly 4X4 drive system working quite well to get it out of trouble. The Storme is a big improvement over the older Safari, although quite a pricey one at Rs 13.66 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) for the top-end version.

Introduction

The Tata Safari was the undisputed champion of the SUV segment for the longest time and for a large period, since being launched in 1998; it dominated the Indian roads like no other. The dream run came to an end with the launch of the more premium SUVs like the Endeavour and Fortuner and the very fact that Tata did not update their model for a very long time.

Respite came in form of the Safari Storme in 2012, but it seemed too little too late and the sales tanked, gradually moving-off the radar for people looking to buy a premium SUV. All is not lost though, the brand name still holds value and a cult following for the Safari remains strong.

To me the Safari has always been the bulky wrestler who has entertained us all with his demeanor, but the times have changed. We don’t watch much wrestling any more, it is the era of meaner contact sports like MMA, the opponent is not just big anymore; he is quick, agile and more lethal with his every move. The Safari then ups the ante with yet another facelift and just prior to the actual storm striking western Maharashtra, we stirred up a Dust Bowl with the refreshed Storme.

Looks and Styling

This revised iteration of the Storme has got some cosmetic changes which are very subtle and most people won’t be able to point them out at the first glance. It is when one compares this new model with the previous version, that these updates become evident. The changes in the fascia include a new honeycomb mesh grille and redesigned bumper. The chrome slat with 'STORME' embossed in it still looks bold and accentuates with the new style. The new Storme has borrowed design cues from some Land Rover products. For example, the revamped front grille is in line with Range Rover’s design language, and boy, has it made a considerable difference. In fact, during our shoot a little girl requested, “Excuse me, can I take a picture of your Range Rover?” With a grin and a bit of pride, I told her it’s the new Tata Safari Storme. Though the projector headlamps and clear lens fog lamps are the same, the restyled grille and bumper has changed the look and surprisingly made it look a lot classier.

The silhouette of the car and pattern of the 16-inch alloy wheels remains the same as the previous model, but the side step is new and looks better than the one on the previous model. At the back, there are absolutely no changes. I wish Tata Motors had done something here like the inclusion of a collapsible step or the inclusion of LED tail lamps would have been a good change and in line with the updates that most facelifted cars receive. Nevertheless, the small tweaks, which the manufacturer has brought in, have proved to be successful enough to give the SUV a fresh look without going overboard.

Climbing up the side step, assisted by the light guides (puddle lamps) in the dark, one is welcomed to the cabin of the Safari Storme with the 'Safari' nomenclature on the door sill plate. The interior is where most of the revisions can be seen. One of the most soothing changes is the new java black interior colour scheme, which looks far more premium than the earlier beige setup. The seat fabric looks superior and gives a good feel along with the arm rests. Both the driver and co-driver seats are still nice and tall, and provide a dominating position. They come with adjustable lumbar support that does provide adequate settings for a comfortable seating position.

The layout of the dashboard is the same as the 2012 model, but now the faux wood finish gets silver accents and in-mold decorated parts. The ergonomics of the Safari Storme were not that great and haven’t got any better. But with the small updates in the interior, they have made things little more convenient than before. The instrument cluster is the same, simple and clear, but still old-school and boring. However, the much-needed change comes in the form of the three-spoke steering wheel, which gives you the feeling of driving a car and not a commercial vehicle. The steering wheel is similar to the one from the Zest and so feels a bit plasticky once gripped, but still far better than the older one. With this new wheel in place, the infotainment system controls have moved from the inconvenient stock behind the wheel.

The redesigned central console loses the nice looking small analog clock and has been replaced with a simple Safari badging. The essential addition is the neatly integrated CONNECTNEXT music system by Harman. The interface of the new system is simple and avoids clutter with only a few important buttons. Though this is not a touch screen system, it is equipped with all the necessary features in a modern system. There is a new speed dependent volume control, which is effective and also lowers down the volume of the system automatically while reversing. The company has incorporated the reverse parking sensors on the same infotainment display screen. The music system comes paired to six speakers which provide a really good output considering the pedigree of the car. And even when music is not on, the cabin is a much quieter place as the carmaker has worked on the NVH insulation levels to a good extent.

The AC vents are the same rectangular ones from the previous model and cool efficiently. The car also gets a roof-mounted rear AC controls and vents in the second row with a cooling coil. The cubby hole below the infotainment system comes handy to keep your phone, and the one below the hand brake - for the wallet. The one in between the seats gets a circular shape and doubles up as a bottle holder as well.

While, owners are going to be delighted with the illumination of the white LED in the cabin lamp, the quality of the grab handles is quite poor. The middle rear seats are nice and comfortable but a reclining option could have made the journey for passengers even more comfy. The last row of seats or the lack of the row/bench type still continues. The present side facing seats still leave behind no head room, but liberate a big deal of space for the luggage when folded up. The overall changes and improvement in quality of materials used in the interior is phenomenal and vital in upping the styling quotient, addition of vital features and boosting the premium feel of the Storme.

Performance

Tata Motors has equipped the updated Safari Storme with new improved version of the 2.2-litre VariCOR diesel mill. With the new 2179cc power plant, the output has been upped from 140bhp to 148bhp (150PS) of power and 320Nm of torque. This power hike might not sound a lot for the elephantine SUV, but does improve the performance a bit. This motor continues with five-speed manual transmission from the older model.

The first three gear ratios are short and good enough to drive in city traffic conditions. The delivery of torque in the low range of 1,700-2,700rpm is good to get the massive vehicle moving smoothly, though above 2,500rpm, the engine becomes noisy. Even so, at 1,500rpm the engine seems calm and provides a smooth acceleration to get the car going. This means, unless you want to push the vehicle hard, the engine delivers an undisturbed and suave driving experience whether in the city or the highway.

However, more power means more fuel consumption right? Or does it! Fortunately, with the advancement in power, Tata Motors have also worked on improving the fuel efficiency. The ARAI certified fuel economy of the Safari Storme is 14.1kmpl which is extremely impressive. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get close to this figure due to the short stint with the vehicle. But with a fuel tank capacity of 63-litres, a range of about 600kms is almost sufficient for the long trip or regular city usage. For people expecting a lot from this huge tank, this tank range is not really very spectacular, as most diesel hatchbacks of today offer 600km range with a smaller tank.

The company claims the self adjusting clutch with a 260mm diameter concentric slave cylinder has improved the clutch life. It has surely reduced the clutch effort and it feels lighter than the previous model. But, since the transmission is the same, the gear noise is still evident and there is a clunk with every gear change.

Well, when we are talking about handling of a 2,555kg vehicle, we are talking serious business. And the ride and handling characteristics of the new Safari Storme feel a bit better than the earlier model.

The steering feedback is good as compared to the old car, it is neither too heavy nor too light, but a composed one. The rack and pinion set-up with hydraulic power assistance does the job well. The turn-to-turn lock could have been smaller amounting to lesser turning of the steering wheel. Nonetheless, a turning radius of 5.4m for an SUV with a length of 4,655mm is good and did not give a feeling of getting stuck while taking u-turns. The wheelbase of 2,650 and a ground clearance of 200mm are tall enough to place it at a good height above the ground.

Taking rough patches, broken roads, muck or a speed bump becomes an unchallenging task with combination of the Bridgestone 235/70 R16 tyres, which are also not bad on smooth tarmac. We were laughing and joking while taking bumps, not realising how comfortable the ride was on bad roads. The front suspension is the double wishbone type with coil spring over shock absorber and the rear suspension set-up is coil spring type with five link rigid axle. This is softly sprung making things still a bit floaty, but the ride quality has slightly improved. The vehicle's tyres still squeal in corners but hold up pretty well. Our recommendation for a reality check with the body roll, is to take a criminal for a ride and rough up the ride to automatically make him confess his crime. I'm not saying it is a good exercise, but that is my only justification. The body roll is still bad! But thankfully, the brakes that stop this gigantic vehicle are good. The ventilated disc brakes in the front and disc brakes at the rear provide sufficient braking power. It is only the base LX variant that comes with the drum brake with auto adjuster at the back.

So, the Safari Storme is like the wrestler who is stiff at the start when he gets punched. But then, this wrestler is trained at taking punches. With the huge mass of the Storme, it nose dives on heavy braking, but then, in situations of panic braking, the ABS does kick in quick with EBD, putting the car back into a safe stance, which otherwise gives a feeling to swerve madly due to the violent weight transfer.

With this new version of the Safari Storme, Tata Motors has brought in the changes, which are more of vital improvements that were pending at the time of launch in 2012. But haven't these changes come in a bit late when the competition has moved way ahead? True, even with all these changes the Safari Storme is still a step behind with competition with ladder on frame chassis and limited features list. It might not be able to knock down its competitors with all the vigor like an MMA fighter, but it is now a wrestler who has become more dynamic and capable.

However, this does not mean that the Safari is a bad car to own. Tata might not be the best in terms of brand image, but the Safari is different. This is the car that carries a bit of history with it and every time someone finds out about your car, it will make you feel the same pride that I felt when talking to the little girl who mistook my SUV for another premium Tata product.

Tata’s long-awaited Safari update, the Safari Storme, hits the roads. We take it out for a spin.

Tata Safari Storme review, test drive and video

When you first look at the new Safari Storme, you are immediately struck by how, even 14 years after its launch, Tata seems to have made barely any changes to the exterior. Alterations to the nose and rear suggest that it’s not much more than a facelift. However, that misconception gets blown to dust the moment you drive it. Once you’re behind the wheel, you realise just how much of an improvement the new Storme is over the previous Safari. It feels better built, it’s far more refined, it rides really well and the interior too feels a generation ahead.

The most obvious changes are to the front, where the slim, wide grille (capped with a thick chrome strip) undercuts the sharp-looking headlights in a nice, stylistic touch. Move to the side however and the Storme looks exactly like the old Safari. New cladding for the doors and wheel arches can’t hide the fact that the glass house is identical, the doors are similar and the A, B and C pillars are the same as well.

At the back, the tailgate-mounted spare wheel has now been moved under the floor. The result is a cleaner rear profile with a new set of tail-lights.

On the inside, the overall improvement in quality all around is immediately evident and almost nothing of the old car is carried over. The chrome door handles and leather seats add a touch of luxury, as do small details like the chrome on the gearlever and the flock lining in the glovebox.

Just like the previous generation Safari, the Storme has excellent seat comfort and, once you haul yourself in, you are rewarded with a commanding seating position and a delightfully spacious and airy cabin. The front seats are large and very well bolstered, whilst the rear bench is supportive too.

In stark contrast, the third row is far from comfortable or practical. The tiny, foldable jump seats are only useable on short journeys, at best.

On the mechanical front, the Safari Storme uses an updated version of the 138bhp Dicor motor, which Tata now calls VariCor, because of the use of a variable geometry turbo. This 2.2-litre common-rail, direct-injection motor uses double overhead cams, hydraulic valve adjusters and sixteen valves to breathe better.

The overall level of refinement is much better now with an engine that is quieter throughout its rev range, and a cabin that feels particularly well insulated from the outside.

Tata engineers have managed to shave around 75 kg off the old car thanks to a lighter chassis, but this hulking two-tonne SUV is a bit lethargic off the line; a result of its weight and lack of low-end torque. You need to keep the engine above 1800rpm, after which the Storme picks up the pace with a fair amount of enthusiasm. The mid-range is quite punchy and cruising is quite effortless, which suits the Safari’s role as a long-distance cruiser.

The clutch is reasonably light and the gearbox has been improved with shorter throws, but the shift still feels a bit soggy and vague.

The Storme sits on a shortened version of the Aria’s hydroformed X2 chassis and maintains the previous Safari’s 2650mm wheelbase. As a result, the Storme’s chassis is approximately 50 percent stiffer and 35kg lighter than the old Safari’s outdated ladder frame.

The ride comfort is simply fantastic. The Storme coasts over bumps and broken roads like a freight train, flattening out even the largest of potholes. The suspension, also carried over from the Aria, is on the softer side, and hence there’s a fair amount of pitching and heaving over uneven surfaces.

The Storme retains the old Safari’s comprehensive four-wheel-drive system that includes a low range and a limited-slip differential. The system is easily engaged by using a central console-mounted dial and this allows the big Tata to tackle medium to difficult sections.

The new Safari Storme comes equipped with features like ABS, remote locking and an audio system with Bluetooth connectivity standard across the range. In fact, the Rs 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) that Tata is asking for the base Storme LX may be considerably more than the old LX, but the equipment is on par, if not better than, the old mid-level EX.

Unusually, the top-end VX versions (Rs 12.5 lakh for the 4x2) no longer get the reversing camera (there’s just parking sensors) or DVD player as they did before.

The Safari Storme, then, comes across as a quantum leap ahead of the previous Safari. It’s well-equipped, refined, better built and comprehensively updated. And with prices starting from Rs 9.9 lakh for the base 4x2 model and going to Rs 13.7 lakh for the fully loaded 4x4 option, it’s great value for money. Also, as a long-distance cruiser, nothing can quite beat it for the money. The only grouse is that, even after 14 years, Tata hasn’t got around to changing the ageing body completely.

Just searched the forum and did'nt found any thread related to problems faced by Safari owners. The thread is created to bring out the issues being faced with Safari so as to help members better tackle them with. Recently I had given the car for service and had several issues: 1) AC not working. 2) Clutch oil leaking 3) Several oil leaks. 4) Left pulling. (This has not been solved from several thousand kms)

Is this thread still alive?? coz i have a lot to report!

@The Monk: The problems you have mentioned will ocour only if there is block in Electronic valve and choaking od Cat Con. What was the reason for damages in ECU wire? Check the quality of fuel you use and Its safe that you change the filling station where your regularly fill fuel. Did you get an solution for the third problem?

Every problem i mentioned was sorted out by replacing wires that were damaged/cut by rodents as i mentioned, vehicle working fine now buddy.

Hi.... I have two questions to be answered, please help 1) Some auto jukies have recommended to put 2T oil along with diesel. Is it a good thing to do? If we can mix then what care to be taken 2) My service light keeps coming up and stays for 1-2 secs and vanishes. This happens on certain locations on my daily route to work. I gathered these areas are grey patches (where cell phone networks drop drastically) could this be the reason? Please reply

Jassida, modern diesel cars have particulate filters. The oil will just clog the particulate filter. Make sure your diesel car doesn't have a particulate filter if you wish to mix 2T oil into it. Have you read your owners manual about what the service light indicates? Check the level of engine oil and gear oil.Check if your glow plugs are working. The ECU and ABS are prone to electromagnetic interference.A simple experiment to try would be to locate the ECU/ECM and cover it with aluminium foil. Then check if you face the service light issue when passing through the grey patches you mentioned.

jassida said: Hi.... My service light keeps coming up and stays for 1-2 secs and vanishes. This happens on certain locations on my daily route to work. I gathered these areas are grey patches (where cell phone networks drop drastically) could this be the reason? Please reply Click to expand... Jessida, service light for safari is towards left and Malfunction Indicator towards right of instrumentation panel. If it is malfunction indicator than it will create a log for malfunction in engine exhaust system which may lead to catalytic converter damage. But, if it is service light then you need to rush it to nearest service centre. If TASC is unable to diagnose, then perhaps phone network needs to be blamed!

Thanks guys. I enquired with my mechanic he said not to put any thing in the diesel as the EMC detects faulty fuel and may cause some serious harm, As it did to one of the beasts (safari) he worked on due to the same negligence of a enthusiast. @the Monk, buddy its the service light (yellow) not the Malfunction light (red) and the Service light is not on for beyond 2 secs and like i mentioned this happens only in specific areas of my daily route. Will try the aluminum foil technique.

Have you tried the aluminium foil? Do report back on its effectiveness.

safarifan

ive completed 13K kms with my beast. faced minor issue. water drops are coming inside during long trip with AC on. I felt the water drops in my feet during the long drive. I think some other storme owner also faced this issue before. Apart from sponge solution suggested by TASS is there any permanent solution for this?
