Seville is well-connected by train

Although geographically quite remote from other major Spanish cities (Madrid is 525 km distant), Seville is still well-connected by train.

• The city’s main train station, Santa Justa , serves as a hub on the Spanish high-speed train network , known as AVE (Alta Velocidad Española). Fast AVE services run direct from Seville to Madrid (2h30min), Barcelona (5h30) and Valencia (3h50).
• There are also regional trains (called Media Distancia) that connect Seville to charming nearby towns and other attractions in Andalucía.
• Seville also boasts a robust commuter train network , known as Cercanías , which efficiently connects the city center to its suburbs and nearby towns. This network is ideal for local exploration.

You arrive in the heart of Seville

The Santa Justa train station is situated very close to the city center.

Arrive in comfort and step off the train straight to your accommodation . While, the station offers easy access to public transport, I suggest you take a private transfer . You’ll avoid the stress of driving in the middle of an unfamiliar city or trying to park, which is a nightmare in Seville!

No need to catch a transfer , like you would do from Seville airport which is located far out of town.

And with no car you aren’t contributing to the major traffic problems in most cities.

It’s the most comfortable way to travel from Seville

This is one of my main reasons I take and recommend the train – it’s so much more comfortable and spacious than driving or flying. Crammed into a metal tube in the sky with a few hundred other people with recycled air and limited leg room is my idea of hell.

On a train there are no seat belts – you can get up, walk along the carriages and often alight at stations along the way for a stroll.

Enjoy natural daylight through large windows made for viewing the passing landscape. No small portholes with shutters and strip lighting on trains!

And if you travel with children the space and comfort of a train is always going to be more better than the cramped confines of a plane. Car journeys can be a nightmare too with bored kids constantly asking “how much longer until we get there…?” .

The heart of Seville is its historic center, which is one of the largest in Europe. This area includes a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets. While beautiful, these streets present quite a challenge for drivers , especially if this is your first time here .

Train travel eliminates the stress of navigating these roads, finding parking spaces , and dealing with city traffic.

• No need to rely on a GPS. Navigating these tight and often one-way streets can be confusing, and relying on GPS (e.g. Google Maps or Apple Maps) within densely built areas can sometimes lead to inaccuracies and further complications.
• Avoiding traffic congestion. Seville’s city center can get quite congested, particularly during peak hours and special events like Semana Santa . By traveling by train, you sidestep the potential for getting stuck in traffic, which can be time-consuming and frustrating.

Many parts of the historic center have limited parking spaces, and some areas having meters (so no free street car parking there…). Itinerary 1: Sevilla – Malaga

1st Day: Seville - Jerez

The first day of the Al Andalus train route our staff will welcome you at 10:00 am at Alabardero Hotel in Seville. After putting your suitcases in a safe place, we will invite you to go to the hotel hall, where there will be a space reserved for train passengers. Our waiters will serve you snacks and drinks. In addition, we will provide you with the travel ticket, your room number and the day’s itinerary.

After the presentation of the guide that will accompany you in Seville,  we will go out to visit the historic quarter of the capital of Andalusia. On this complete tour of the city you can discover monumental gems such as the Cathedral , crowned by the Giralda , a symbol of Seville. You will also see the Royal Alcazar , a wonderful set of palaces with spectacular gardens, and stroll through the alleys of Santa Cruz Quarter , where the Jewish community once settled.

At lunchtime we will return to the Hotel Alfonso XIII, where you will taste the most famous dishes of local cuisine. You will continue discovering the city on a panoramic bus tour, making a very special stop at the beautiful Plaza de España .

Then we will head to the station to board the Andalusian train . The crew will greet you with a welcome toast and then settle in your luxurious and comfortable room . Soon after we will start the journey to Jerez . On the way, you will enjoy dinner in one of the fabulous restaurant wagons on board.

Already in Jerez, the train will stay at the station so that you have a better rest at night.

2nd Day: Jerez - Cádiz

This second day of the Al Andalus 2024 Train tour , after replenishing our strength with a good breakfast served on board, we will travel by luxury bus to Cadiz . We will visit the attractions of the historic center of this ancient city, the oldest in the western world. Then we will have free time to explore the city on our own and get drunk on its Cadiz charm.

We will get back on the bus to return to the train and enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by our chef. We will have time to enjoy the beautiful Belle Epoque style rooms before dinner time in a restaurant in Jerez.

The train will remain at the station and we’ll overnight in Jerez.

3rd Day: Jerez - Ronda

After breakfast, we will board the bus that will take us to a famous Sherry winery . There we will learn the secrets of making this renowned drink with Denomination of Origin. In addition, we will taste the best specimens that the winery produces. We will finish the visit in Jerez attending the equestrian show “How the Andalusian Horses Dance”.

We will return to the Al Andalus Train to head for the beautiful White Village of Ronda . Along the way, we’ll enjoy a hearty lunch in the onboard dining cars.

We will liven up the afternoon with performances and shows in the train’s luxurious lounge cars. Then we will go by bus to have dinner in a restaurant in Ronda.

The train will stop in Ronda to spend the night in this town.

4th Day: Ronda - Córdoba

After breakfast we will get ready to tour the old city of Ronda , which is part of the route of the beautiful White Villages . Our guide will take you through the Alameda del Tajo , the New Bridge and the Old Bridge. You will also see the oldest bullring in Spain, the Palacio Mondragón, among other emblematic places. You will have free time to explore Ronda freely and admire the beautiful views of the Serranía.

Back on board the luxurious Al Andalus Train , we will make the journey to Cordoba , while we taste a select meal.

We will spend the night in Cordoba.

5th Day: Córdoba - Úbeda - Baeza - Granada

Like every day, after breakfast, we will continue the itinerary of the Al Andalus Train. We will visit Cordoba , which in medieval times was an opulent city, capital of the Al Ándalus caliphate. We will enter one of its World Heritage Sites, in the impressive Mosque of Cordoba .

Then we will return to our hotel on wheels to regain strength with a delicious lunch while we continue on our way to the Linares station, in Baeza . Along the way, the protagonists will be the unique landscapes of the Andalusian countryside . Take the opportunity to relax with the views, while having a drink lying comfortably in the privacy of your suite or in one of the train cars.

In the afternoon we will visit Ubeda and Baeza , two towns that hold the title of  World Heritage Cities .

Back on board, we will continue the route on the Al Ándalus train bound for Granada , the home of the famous Alhambra . During the journey we will delight ourselves with a well-deserved dinner served on board and then you can enjoy the nightly entertainment program.

Finally, we will spend the night at the Granada station.

6th Day: Granada

This will be a very special day! We will see inside the most visited place in Spain: The Alhambra, a World Heritage Site. We will visit the beautiful palaces and gardens of this fortress that was once the home of sultans and kings. Take the opportunity to take photos in the spectacular Nasrid Palaces and its Lions courtyards. And relax strolling through the fabulous gardens and fountains of the Generalife Palace.

In the afternoon there will be free time to explore the center of Granada on your own. We will round off the night with dinner at a local restaurant, where you will taste the most select dishes of Granada cuisine.

7th Day: Granada - Málaga

On the last day of the Al Andalus Train route , after enjoying breakfast on board, we will say goodbye to the train and its crew to take the coach to Malaga , where we will visit its Alcazaba , palatial fortification of the Muslim era.

Free time and lunch at the Hotel AC by Marriot Málaga Palacio , where the trip will end around 5:00 p.m.

Itinerary 2: Málaga – Sevilla

1st Day: Málaga - Granada

On the first day of the tour on the Tren Al Andalus , our staff will receive you at 10:00 am at the Hotel AC by Marriot Málaga Palacio . After putting your suitcases safely, we will invite you to go to the hotel hall, where there will be a space reserved for train passengers. Our waiters will serve you a variety of canapés and drinks . In addition, we will provide you with the travel ticket, your room number and the itinerary for the day.

After the presentation of the guide that will accompany you in Malaga, we will go out to visit the city next to its Alcazaba , a palatial fortification from the Muslim era . At lunchtime we will return to the Hotel AC by Marriot Málaga Palacio , where you will taste the most famous dishes of the local gastronomy .

In the afternoon, in our coach, we will arrive in Granada , where our train will wait for us. The crew will greet you with a welcome toast and then you can settle into your luxurious and comfortable room.

After dinner, we will spend the night in Granada to facilitate a better rest at night.

2nd Day: Granada - Linares/Baeza

This will be a v ery special day ! We will see inside the most visited place in Spain: The Alhambra, a World Heritage Site . After our first breakfast, we will visit the beautiful palaces and gardens of this Nasrid fortress that was once the home of sultans and kings .

Take the opportunity to take photos in the spectacular Nasrid Palaces and its Patio de los Leones . And relax walking among the fabulous gardens and fountains of the Generalife. After lunch, there will be free time to explore the center of Granada on your own.

We will return to the train to go to the Linares station in Baeza while we enjoy a magnificent dinner on board .

3rd Day: Úbeda - Baeza - Córdoba

After breakfast, we will have the opportunity to visit Úbeda and Baeza , two towns that hold the title of World Heritage Cities . Back on board, we will enjoy lunch on the way to our next destination: Córdoba . In medieval times, it was an opulent city, capital of the Caliphate of Al Ándalus .

We will learn about its history in an interesting guided tour.

In the late afternoon, we will have dinner and spend the night in the city .

4th Day: Córdoba - Ronda

On our 4th day, after our breakfast, we will enter one of the most outstanding World Heritage Sites in the city of Cordoba : the impressive Mosque of Córdoba .

Back aboard the luxurious Al Andalus Train , we will make the journey to Ronda , while we taste a select meal. In the afternoon, we will visit the ancient city of Ronda, which is part of the route of the beautiful White Towns . Our guide will take you through the Alameda del Tajo , the Puente Nuevo and the Puente Viejo . You will also see the oldest bullring in Spain, the Mondragón Palace , among other emblematic places. You will have free time to explore Ronda freely and admire the beautiful views of the Serranía.

5th Day: Ronda - Jerez de la Frontera

6th Day: Jerez de la Frontera - Cádiz

On this sixth day of the Al Andalus Train 2024 tour , after regaining strength with a good breakfast served on board, we will travel by luxury bus to Cádiz.

We will visit the attractions of the historic center of this thousand-year-old city , the oldest in the Western world . Then we will have free time to tour the city on our own and get drunk on its Cádiz charm as well as an excellent meal.

In the afternoon, we will visit Jerez and have dinner and sleep at the station

7th Day: Seville

After enjoying our last breakfast on board and saying goodbye to the crew, we will go out to visit the historic center of the capital of Andalusia .

In this complete tour of the city you will be able to see monumental jewels such as the Cathedral , crowned by the Giralda , a true symbol of Seville. You will also walk through the narrow streets of the Barrio de Santa Cruz , where the Jewish community once settled.

We will continue with a magnificent meal at the Alabardero Hotel in Sevilla . At around 17:00 p.m ., we will end our trip through the south of Spain .

DAY 1: SEVILLE - XERES (Al Andalus train)

Flight or train to Seville on request. Individual arrival in Seville (Spain).

Guests are welcomed at the Hotel Alfonso XIII at 10am. Departure for a tour of the capital of Andalusia. Seville's rich history has left it with an impressive architectural heritage: its Gothic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Siege houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus. It is famous for its Giralda bell tower, an ancient Hispano-Moorish minaret. Together with the Alcázar Palace and the Archives of the Indies, it forms a splendid architectural complex listed by UNESCO.

After lunch, continue to the impressive Plaza de España.

A welcome drink accompanies your boarding of the luxury Al Andalus Spanish train. You settle into your "room on wheels", where your luggage is already waiting for you. DAY 2: XERES - CADIX (Al Andalus train, Gran Turismo coach)

After the buffet breakfast served on board your Gran Turismo coach, you will set off for the Andalusian city of Cadiz. Cadiz is Europe's most westerly city, built on a rock linked to the mainland by a narrow road. It is famous for its beaches and rich historical heritage. After visiting the city, you will have free time to take full advantage of its many viewpoints before lunch.

Return to Jerez. Free time for personal discovery. You return to your luxury Andalusia train, with dinner served on board. Overnight on board the Al Andalus train in Jerez (B, L, D)

DAY 3: XERES - RONDA (Al Andalus luxury train)

After breakfast on board the train, you will visit one of the most important producers of Xerès, the famous white wine fortified with brandy. Your visit to Jerez, a typical Andalusian city, continues with a horse show at the Royal Equestrian School. You then set off to discover the region and the town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, situated on the estuary of the River Guadalquivir and opposite the Doñana Natural Park, the largest ecological reserve in Europe. Sanlúcar was a port of call for many of the Spanish conquistadors.

DAY 4: RONDA - CORDOUE (Al Andalus train)

DAY 5: CORDOUA - GRENADA (Al Andalus luxury train)

You visit beautiful Cordoba, the historic centre of the Caliphate in medieval times. Cordoba is the city with the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In fact, its historic centre, its mosque-cathedral famous for its two-coloured arches, the Medina-Azahara and the Cordoba Patios Festival have all been listed. It is also the birthplace of Seneca, Averroes and Maimonides, three major philosophers of Roman, Islamic and Jewish civilisation.

Lunch on board the train while your train takes you to Linares-Baeza station, where a Gran Turismo coach awaits you for an excursion through olive groves to the towns of Úbeda and Baeza, both declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO for their exceptional heritage.

DAY 6: GRENADA (Al Andalus train)

DAY 7: GRENADA- MALAGA (Al Andalus train)

Day 1 (Monday): Sevilla – Jerez

Travellers' welcome in Sevilla, Hotel Alfonso XIII, at 10:00 am. Afterwards, enjoy a visit to the capital of Andalusia, which has the largest historical town centre in Spain. After lunch, enjoy a panoramic view of the city and visit the famous Plaza de España, before boarding the Al Andalus train to your next destination. All aboard the train to enjoy a welcome drink, meet the crew and settle into your accommodation. Dinner on board on the way to magical and historical Jerez, where you will spend the night.

Day 2 (Tuesday): Jerez

Begin your day with the delicious a-la-carte and buffet breakfast. The tour includes a visit to a winery in Jerez. Before lunch, enjoy the magic of the "Andalusian Dancing Horses", a famous equestrian ballet accompanied by Spanish music. Lunch in Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Return to Jerez. Dinner on board the train. Overnight stay in Jerez.

Day 3 (Wednesday): Jerez – Cádiz – Ronda

Your luxury coach will take you to Cádiz, popularly known as the "Silver City" and considered the oldest city in the West. Tour and free time to experience the charm of Cádiz in your own way. Enjoy a leisurely lunch and the ride on the Al Andalus train towards the impressive city of Ronda, where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 4 (Thursday): Ronda – Granada

After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of Ronda, with its breathtaking location atop a plateau cut by the deep Ronda Gorge, through which the River Guadalevín flows. Free time before lunch and then back on the train to go to Granada, a beautiful city nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Dinner and overnight stay in Granada.

Day 5 (Friday): Granada

Spend the day touring Granada and the Alhambra, the most visited monument in Spain, a rich palace complex built by the Nasrid sultans of the Kingdom of Granada. Enjoy also the free time to explore the city at your leisure. At night, the entire city is an enchanting place where you can experience a magical dinner surrounded in a special historical ambience with vibrant colours and sounds. Overnight stay in Granada.

Day 6 (Saturday): Granada – Linares-Baeza – Córdoba

In the morning, train ride to Linares-Baeza, where a luxury coach awaits to take you to visit the cities of Úbeda and Baeza, both of which are declared World Heritage by UNESCO. After lunch, back on board the train to begin your journey to Córdoba. Dinner and overnight stay in Córdoba.

Day 7 (Sunday): Córdoba – Sevilla

After enjoying your last breakfast on board, enjoy a tour to discover the former capital of the Medieval emirate and the caliphate of Al Andalus, when it became the largest, most cultured and opulent city in Western Europe. Return to the train for lunch and a scenic ride on the Al Andalus on the way to the Andalusia capital: Sevilla, finishing up the trip at approximately 17:00.

On a weeklong journey from Seville or Malaga, you’ll take in the near-ancient wonders of Al Andalus – Islamic Spain. Successive Moorish dynasties have left their mark on the region’s great cities, with imposing palace-forts and ornate mosque-cathedrals vying for your attention. In between, you’ll visit such millennia-old greats as Cádiz and Ronda; wrapped in sea and mountains respectively, their Moorish grandeur sits alongside Roman ruins and a Phoenician prehistory. There’s also the twin Renaissance delights of Úbeda and Baeza, whose competing aristocracy sought to outdo each other in successive architectural flourishes. You’ll take it all in on a luxurious rail journey aboard the Al Andalus through Andalucia, whose Belle Époque grandeur first hosted royalty. And, after enjoying indulgent dining, cocktail evenings and show cooking onboard, you’ll explore each destination with everything from guided tours to wine tastings and cultural performances.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1 uk/seville.

Begin your trip with complimentary airport lounge access before flying into Seville, where you will make your way to your historic accommodation. Whether it’s Moorish defences, Roman ruins or Christianity’s exuberance, it seems as if all the world has left its mark on this thousand-year-old city of Seville. Its Gothic cathedral proudly exhibits an Islamic minaret as a bell tower and the Alcázar is a great Moorish castle that cloaks a beautiful royal residence. You’ll also visit the General Archive of the Indies, a 16th-century merchants’ exchange that documents the rich history of the Spanish Empire.

Stay: Corral del Rey, Seville (Deluxe)

Day 2 Seville/Jerez

Meet at the historic Hotel Alfonso XIII for a welcome lunch with a panoramic view of the city, followed by a visit to the Plaza de Espana. You’ll then board the luxurious Al Andalus to make the journey to Jerez. First built for members of the British monarchy to travel between Calais and the French Riviera, cabins recall all the grandeur of the Belle Époque, featuring plush fabric sofas, gilded wood panelling and even hydromassage showers. The lounge carriages are equally regal, host to dances, cocktail evenings and live performances along with gourmet dining and show cooking. A welcome drink on the train and presentation of the crew, before dinner on board while the train heads for Jerez and the first overnight stop.

Day 3 Jerez/Cadiz/Jerez

After breakfast, join a coach for the short journey to Cadiz, popularly known as "la Tacita de Plata" (the Silver Teacup) and considered the oldest city in the West. You will have free time to immerse yourselves in Cadiz's charms at leisure, and after lunch return to Jerez in the afternoon for free time and dinner.

Day 4 Jerez/Ronda

This morning you’ll be introduced to the region’s wealth of oenological delights, with a tasting visit to one of Jerez’s fabled wine (sherry) cellars. Your cultural education will continue will continue with a visit to the region’s famous equestrian ballet. Set to traditional music, it’s simply titled ‘How the Andalucian Horses Dance’. Lunch on board the train as it heads towards Ronda, where you will have dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 5 Ronda/Cordoba

While Cádiz dates back three millennia, Ronda can also count itself among Spain’s oldest cities, having been established in a relatively sprightly 9th century BC. As such, it owes much of its charm to its Moorish past, with its La Ciudad old town filled with Islamic mosques and palaces. To complete the picture, throw in legendary bullrings, pretty Spanish plazas, great fortress walls and delicate churches. And, like its older cousin, it enjoys a spectacular backdrop. Swapping sea for mountain peaks, it’s dramatically perched on a great inland plateau fissured into a 100m-deep gorge. This is the beauty that has won praise from the Romantic likes of Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles. Lunch on board while the train returns to Moorish Andalucia with a tour of Córdoba. Once the capital of Islamic Spain, it laid claim to the title of Western Europe’s largest and most culturally rich city, here enjoy dinner and overnight on the train.

Day 6 Cordoba–Úbeda–Baeza–Granada

Cordoba is centred around the Mezquita. Ranking among the Islamic world’s finest architectural achievements, its silver-and-gold domes look down on thousands of marble columns and hundreds of chandeliers. But, as the region’s history goes, the Mezquita was to be converted into a 16th-century cathedral, adding grand Renaissance flourishes while retaining much of the building’s thousand-year-old charm. It’s a fitting metaphor for the rest of the city, with the likes of Moorish forts sitting alongside pretty 17th-century plazas and Renaissance palaces. Lunch on board the train before disembarking at Linares, you’ll board a coach to tour its pair of nearby Renaissance gems. You’ll start with Úbeda whose 16th-century rulers – ever the showmen – sought to improve their courtly esteem with the ever-favoured Italian aesthetic. The result? Great chapels with façades of Greek gods, a town hall that’s more palace than place of work and a hospital that’s furnished with marble columns and frescoed staircases. Next-door Baeza was also suitably enamoured with the Italian Renaissance, its 16th-century aristocracy keen not to be outshone, of course. Its Gothic cathedral, itself borne from a demolished mosque, was beautified with classical flourishes and a series of handsome palaces, plazas and delightful chapels were quickly added. After your tour you’ll continue on to Granada.

Day 7 Granada

From their stronghold in Granada the Nasrid dynasty once ruled over much of Andalucia. It’s a 300-year-long power grab that is immortalised in the emirate’s Alhambra. A UNESCO-listed wonder, this palace-fort’s stern walls hide a royal interior that forms one of the greatest examples of Islamic architecture’s fineries. Delicate arches are carved into detailed motifs, fountains trickle lazily and the rooms of the royal quarters are honeycombed into intricate lattices. And it sits among a dizzying collection of gilded basilicas, 16th-century monasteries and Renaissance palaces. You’ll take it all in on your city tour.

Day 8 Granada > Malaga

After enjoying a last breakfast on board, say goodbye to the Al Andalus and its crew before travelling by coach to Malaga, where you will enjoy the city’s myriad delights. Chart Málaga’s rich heritage between Renaissance cathedrals, Roman amphitheatres and the thousand-year-old Alcazaba – part palace, part fortress. Don’t forget the museums on its favourite son, Picasso, and its moreish tapas bar scene. Lunch will be taken at the Parador Castillo de Gibralfaro, your accommodation for the night, and the finishing point of the journey.

Day 9 Malaga > UK

After a last breakfast, if you have time spend your last hours exploring Malaga before a transfer returns your to the airport for your flight back to the UK

The Best Luxury Train Journeys Through Spain

In this latest article in Elite Traveler’s ongoing Spain series, we take a look at the country’s luxury train journeys.

From San Sebastian in the north to Cadiz in the south, Spain has a wide variety of must-see sights including architectural marvels and natural wonders. If you have time on your side, a slow and winding train journey through this beautiful country is certainly the best way to see it. Fortunately, there are a number of itineraries for the elite traveler to choose from.

El Transcantábrico

Considered the closest thing to a luxury cruise ship on rails, El Transcantábrico is one of the finest long-haul trains in the world. In service for over 30 years, it is also Spain’s longest-running tourist train. No expense has been spared in decking out its carriages from the brass handles that help you onboard to the opulent custom beds fitted into the train’s suites. The décor takes guests back to the golden age of train travel while providing all the modern comforts of 21st Century travel. Indeed, the rooms are a match for any train in the world both in size and quality.

As well as first-class cuisine onboard, guests will have the chance to experience some of the finest restaurants that Spain has to offer along the route. Most itineraries include genuine gourmet destinations where you’ll be able to sample the most delicious traditional dishes of northern Spain and its world-class wines.

El Transcantábrico undertakes two routes throughout the year. The first, named Clásico, winds slowly through the gastronomical and archaeological wonders of Spain’s north over eight days and seven nights. Begin in the rugged northwest of Galicia and travel through multiple towns including Gijón, Oviedo and Bilbao as well as quaint fishing villages before reaching your destination in the charming León.

The second journey, named Gran Lujo, has been curated for the true gourmand. Setting off from San Sebastián, guests can begin their vacation by experiencing the world-famous pintxos bars in the city’s winding streets. San Sebastián is also home to some of the world’s finest restaurants, including 11 with Michelin stars. Those with the means to dine in these exclusive eateries will be wowed before they even step onboard.

Then, over eight days, you will head west towards Galicia, and have the chance to experience a number of historical towns and the stunning Picos de Europa National Park along the way. The route is very similar to the ancient pilgrimage of Camino de Santiago, famous for both its natural beauty and religious importance. Thousands of hikers undertake the 600-mile journey every year, but you will experience the best of it without walking a step more than you want to on this journey.

The Al Andalus

Leave Spain’s rugged northwest behind and head down to the parched south to experience the country’s other luxury train, Al Andalus. This train is known for its Belle Époque décor, its Grand Clase bedrooms and the spacious saloon cars lifted straight out of the 1920s. Once again, guests can expect first-class cuisine both onboard and in towns along the route.

There are two routes to choose from, but both depart from Seville. Our recent guide to Seville offered a tantalizing glimpse at a city steeped in history and cultural significance. Go on a tapas trail through the city’s cobbled maze before marveling at the medieval Real Alcazár de Sevilla, one of the city’s must-visit sights.

The first route winds through the best of Andalucía. From Sevilla, you head towards Cadiz and onto Jerez, home of the best sherry that Spain (and the world) has to offer.

Make sure you spend as much time as possible wandering the streets of Toledo, a beautiful town where Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures coexisted for centuries. The resulting mix of architecture is a unique sight. The trip ends in Madrid, a vibrant capital city that offers endless excuses to extend your adventure.

Suggested Itinerary

This morning, take the Eurostar in Standard Premier class from London St Pancras to Paris. On arrival, you’ll be met at the end of the platform by a driver who will take you across to the Gare de Lyon with plenty of time for your onward journey. You may even have time for lunch at the famous Le Train Bleu restaurant (pictured) inside the station.

A direct TGV takes you south through France and across the Spanish border to Barcelona where you’ll arrive late in the evening. When you disembark the train, a private transfer will take you to the Grand Hotel Central (or similar), your accommodation for the next 3 nights.

You have two days at leisure in Barcelona to explore. Fans of architecture will be in their element here, with 2000 years of construction on show, from Roman remains to the creations of local hero Antoni Gaudi by way of a beautiful Baroque quarter in the heart of the city. There’s also a huge choice of food options, from paella by the beach to fine dining in an Art Nouveau restaurant. The centrally located food market Mercat de la Boqueria is well worth a visit and the Parc de Montjuïc offers great views over the city along with the fascinating Fundació Joan Miró gallery.

It’s a 5.5 hour rail journey by comfortable high-speed AVE train to Seville. On arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to the Hotel Colon Gran Melia (or similar) where you have a 3-night stay. 

Seville is a quintessentially Andalusian city, combining white-washed narrow streets lined with orange trees with colourful Moorish architecture and the largest Gothic church in the world. Not-to-be-missed attractions here include the opulent Alcazar and the endlessly photogenic Plaza de España (pictured).

It’s time to leave Seville and head for Spanish capital Madrid, where a private transfer will be waiting to take you to the Barceló Torre de Madrid (or similar) for your last 3 nights in Spain. 

Enjoy two full days exploring here at your own leisure. Madrid boasts not one but three of Europe’s top art galleries – the Prado being the most famous. You can also discover 20th century art, including Picasso’s epic Guernica at the Reina Sofía Museum or take a tour through art history at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Elsewhere, don’t miss the lovely Plaza Mayor or a wander through peaceful Retiro Park.

Leave Madrid after breakfast today on a direct train to the border with France at Irun. Here, you’ll be met by a transfer driver who will take you the final 20 miles to Biarritz on the Atlantic Coast. Here, you’ll check in for an overnight stay at Le Régina Biarritz Hôtel & Spa – MGallery (or similar). 

Spend the rest of your afternoon and evening in Biarritz. Perhaps take a stroll along the beachfront promenade or simply enjoy the facilities at your hotel. In the evening, there are plenty of restaurants to choose from, with an emphasis on delicious seafood.

After a leisurely start this morning, return to the station at Biarritz and catch a train back to Paris. This time, you’ll be arriving into Montparnasse station and your transfer driver will be waiting to take you back to the Gare du Nord. Here, board a return Eurostar to London.

Typical hotels on this itinerary

Located in Barcelona’s central Gothic Quarter, the Grand Central Hotel offers easy access to the main sights of the city. Bedrooms are designed in a modern style with amenities including a 32-inch TV and a free minibar with soft drinks and snacks. There is also a restaurant as well as a bar and rooftop swimming pool overlooking the Gothic Quarter and Barcelona Cathedral.

The Hotel Colon Gran Melia is a design hotel located in the heart of Seville. The stylishly decorated bedrooms feature automatic lighting, free Wi-Fi internet access and a flat-screen satellite TV. There is also a restaurant serving traditional local cuisine along with a café, a cocktail lounge and a Clarins spa. Enjoy a swim on the rooftop pool with views over the city.

Occupying a modern building in the Plaza de España, the Barceló Torre Madrid is a luxurious and comfortable hotel with a central location, 10 minutes’ walk from the Royal Palace. The elegantly furnished bedrooms come with air-conditioning, a 42-inch TV and en suite bathrooms with a rain-effect shower. There is also an indoor pool and fitness centre along with an on site restaurant.

Le Regina Biarritz is a landmark hotel occupying a Belle Epoque building which overlooks the Bay of Biscay. Air-conditioned and sound-proofed, the classically designed bedrooms are equipped with a Nespresso coffee machine, a minibar and a flat-screen cable TV. The hotel also boasts a panoramic restaurant, an Art Deco lobby bar, a spa and an outdoor swimming pool.

A complete guide to getting the train from madrid to seville.

Travelling around Spain is an incredible experience, made better by the quality of the Spanish train network, particularly the Spain high speed rail service. The network makes visiting multiple cities and towns across Spain a breeze, with large stations, comfortable trains and quick connection and travel times. Given the ease of train travel in Spain, and the variation between Spanish cities, we wanted to travel from Madrid to Seville via train, to experience both cities and travel in the most comfortable and convenient way. We think this is the best way to travel between Madrid and Seville. From our experience, we’ve detailed what train options there are, how to find them, how to book train tickets in Spain and what to avoid, to help you get the most out of your trip for a small Spain group tour.

Booking Tickets & Train Information

Our first priority was selecting the correct train to catch, both in terms of going to the right destination, and being the most convenient for departure, duration and price. There are several websites to look at, but we found Trainline Europe to be the best, as it gives users good overview of all the trains available, and a breakdown of prices. It is also incredibly easy to book the tickets on the website and see ticket conditions such as refund policies.

Trains from Madrid to Seville leave from Madrid Atocha station and go to Sevilla Santa Justa station. There are a couple of different train companies that run this route, but the quickest and most frequent is Renfe, Spain’s high speed train company. There are around 14 direct Renfe trains from Madrid to Seville everyday, giving travellers a great choice of departure times. The earliest departure for the day is generally around 07:00 and the latest around 21:00.

Renfe operates two types of trains on this line, the AVE and Alvia. Both are comfortable, quick and modern, but the AVE is considered slightly better out of the two. The Alvia trains reach speeds of up to 250km per hour, whereas the AVE trains can reach speeds of up to 300km per hour. However, both are great, and the journey duration between them is negligible, so pick your train depending on the most convenient departure time and price for you.

Speaking of pricing, book your train tickets in advance to get the best possible price. Tickets can range from €30 ($35) for one adult, one way in standard class to €70+ ($80+) for one adult, one way in standard class. Prices depend on how far in advance you book, the train type, time, and whether you are looking at peak or off peak times of year. However, tickets for first class seats can be as little as €11 ($13) more than standard class, per adult, so it’s worth considering the upgrade for the reasonable price difference.

What To Bring

Given the great facilities and amenities that are available on the trains in Spain, particularly the Renfe trains, there aren’t any unusual items you need to bring with you. We would advise printing your E-Ticket, if you have one, and when possible, as this avoids any potential issues with phones dying or breaking! Otherwise, the train toilets are well equipped and there is a mobile buffet service on all trains, as well as a buffet car on all AVE trains. There are large luggage racks, and overhead luggage racks on the trains, so no need to worry about luggage limits.

Madrid Atocha Train Station

Madrid Atocha Station is reasonably big and caters to both long distance trains (including to other European cities), as well as smaller suburban train networks. The building itself is beautiful, and is yet another architectural wonder of Madrid. Inside, there are a good selection of eateries including cafes, restaurants and bars, as well as some shops. Toilets are available before ticket gates, but are paid for, which is by cash only. There are also toilets in the high speed trains area, after the ticket gates, which are free. To one side of the station, the high speed side, there is a large hall with restaurants and shops, which also has a beautiful indoor garden with plants and trees. It’s a great place to while away some time if you have a long wait for your train.

The station is split into two sections, with the Spain high speed rail services to one side, at ground floor and first floor, and the suburban trains to the other side. However, despite the high speed rail and suburban rail services being split into different areas of the station, they have the same platform numbers. This means there are 2 lots of platform 1, 2, 3 and so on. Please make sure you are going to the correct platform number for the high speed rail area.

We unfortunately did not know there were 2 of each platform and waited at the incorrect platform 8 (which was showing a departing train for Seville too!). As a result, we missed our train and had to pay again for a new ticket. We made the costly mistake so you don’t have to! If in doubt, ask a member of staff for help and directions at the station. Do this at least 20 minutes before your train departs. When we were trying to get a refund for our ticket (which we were not able to get), there was another man who had missed his train for exactly the same reason, so it wasn’t just us!

Spanish high speed trains close for boarding around 10 minutes prior to departure, so make sure you arrive at the station, and your platform, in plenty of time. There is also security to go through, which includes luggage checks, similar to airport security. This can all take 10 minutes or so if there are queues, so again, leave yourself ample time. Once you have gone through security, go to your platform gate where your ticket will be checked and scanned and you will be able to board the train.

Madrid To Seville Train Experience

We found the high speed trains in Spain very comfortable. They are light, spacious and well equipped, making any journey an enjoyable experience. Tickets should have a seat reservation on them. We sat in our allocated seats and you should too, as the trains can get quite busy. Luggage racks at the end of each car, as well as overhead racks, provide ample storage space. There are also a good sized tray tables, as well as power sockets, which makes working or using a laptop/tablet easy.

Windows throughout the train are large, so there are good views for seeing the Spanish landscape pass by. Toilets are clean, and the food and drinks service comes around frequently. The train makes a number of stops on the route to Seville, most notably Cordoba, a city between Madrid and Seville. We thoroughly enjoyed the train. With a smooth ride, comfortable seats and plenty of space, there really isn’t anything to dislike about the experience.

Arriving Into Sevilla Santa Justa Train Station

On arriving into Seville’s Santa Justa Station, we were greeted with a modern, yet compact station. The arrivals process is very easy. We left the platform and were immediately in the main part of the station, free to do whatever we wanted. There are a few shops and cafes in the station, mainly serving sandwiches and baguettes. Taxis and buses are available from outside the station, you can read more about the best option for getting to and from the train station to the city centre in our Seville travel guide.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our Madrid to Seville train experience, despite making some hiccups on our journey. We would recommend taking the train over flying, or driving, as it is more comfortable, convenient and gives you the opportunity to see more of the Spanish countryside.

How to Book Italy's Orient Express La Dolce Vita Train

F or more than a century, the Orient Express has captured travelers' imaginations as a grand European hotel on rails, shuttling high society from Paris to Istanbul since 1883. The luxury train became the stuff of legend (as the "spies' express" ) and pop culture, be it in Bram Stoker's Dracula or Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express , while setting the standard for elevated transcontinental travel.

Sadly, the luxury of slow travel couldn't compete with high-speed rail and budget flights, reports The Guardian , prompting the final run of the original Orient Express line in 2009.

That is, until more recently. In the past several years, the legendary locomotive experience has witnessed a rebirth thanks to luxury hospitality brands that are breathing new life into the iconic rail journeys-including the forthcoming La Dolce Vita Orient Express in Italy, a joint venture of French hotel firm Accor and real-estate investment company Arsenale, together with Italy's Trenitalia Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and Treni Turistici Italiani .

Starting in spring 2025, La Dolce Vita Orient Express will bring passengers to regions throughout Italy on itineraries that run between two and three days. There are nine itineraries to choose from (depending on the time of the year):

• Venice and Portofino
• Venice and Siena
• The Italian Trans-Siberian: Matera and Palena
• Rome to Montalcino
• Rome to Monferrato
• Southern Italy: Maratea and Palermo
• Palermo to Rome
• Sicily and the Mediterranean

Travelers can choose between 12 deluxe cabins and 18 suites, with prices starting at $3,800 per person for a deluxe cabin and at $5,100 per person for a suite.

As for the concept for the new La Dolce Vita Orient Express train, "The train pays tribute to the years of La Dolce Vita, a fantastic period of history, [and] to the artistic and cultural fervor of Italy in the 1960s," according to a press release. Dimorestudio dreamed up the midcentury-inspired design aboard the train's renovated carriages-think pops of terra-cotta paint, tongue-and-groove ceilings, and brass accents galore. Dining aboard La Dolce Vita trains will be a sophisticated affair as well: Travelers will enjoy exclusive recipes created by master Italian chefs who use local ingredients, while sipping award-winning Italian wine. There will, of course, also be a lounge and bar, as well as entertainment, "all boldly celebrating the art, design, and creativity of the 1960s and 1970s," the release stated.

Upon departure from Italy's Rome Ostiense station, La Dolce Vita passengers will have access to their own lounge and a "relaxing pre-boarding experience."

The trains will cross about 10,000 miles of railway lines, 4,400 of which are not electrified and are historic routes traversing less-frequented parts of the countryside. Passengers will get their share of landscape gazing (alpine mountains and sandy southern beaches) and of metropolitan centers like Venice and Rome. "We are thrilled to officially open the doors to a new era of travel with La Dolce Vita Orient Express. This endeavor embodies the essence of exquisite exploration, where sophistication meets adventure," Orient Express CEO Gilda Perez-Alvarado said in a press statement.

Not to be confused with the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express , which is currently owned by Belmond, part of LVMH, and runs from London to Venice, La Dolce Vita Orient Express is the latest incarnation of the original train line.

Starting on April 2, 2024, travelers in the United States and Canada can call (833) 661-3080 to book their journey with La Dolce Vita Orient Express. And as of April 24, 2024, bookings will be available online on the La Dolce Vita website .

Enter From Two Streets

Every detail at the Virgin Hotels Edinburgh seems to have been carefully considered. Guests can enter on two different streets. There’s the front entrance on Victoria Street within the India Buildings and an entry into the posterior new-build section on Cowgate Street that welcomes guests to the Commons Club.

Art To Remember

The art murals are unusual and distinct.

With artworks selected for their connection to the local community and the unique character of Scotland, the Virgin Hotels Edinburgh collaborated with Visto Artwork to curate the wealth of art on display in the rooms and common spaces of the hotel. Much of the art was created by local Edinburgh artists. The history of the city is captured well in many art pieces, and some even depict the imagined future. ‘Mary in Space’ by Studio Giftig, which depicts Mary Queen of Scots as part of worlds colliding, can be seen in the restaurant Eve. The sculpture “Chandelier” by Arthur Mamou-Mani hangs in Greyfriars Hall.

Modern Accommodations With Views

The hotel’s chambers, which are its name for the guestrooms, are modern, yet they also showcase Victorian era details. One of the most memorable aspects of the rooms are the views. Many guestrooms offer views of Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile.

The chambers have two distinct spaces. The dressing room area has a closet big enough for two people, and it has a full vanity, a makeup desk, and an extra-large shower with a built-in bench. There’s a sliding door and drapery to separate this area from the sleeping area, which gives each guest an extra touch of privacy.

The lounge area of each guestroom has a comfortable bed with luxurious bedding. It also has a red minifridge that’s stocked with a selection of things that are mostly chosen for its connection to local community. There’s also a television that also serves as a tool for adjusting air conditioning and lighting or ordering room service. Travelers will also find plenty of outlets for charging phones and other electronics.

The sleeping area is relaxing and comfortable.

Those who can splurge on their visit may want to stay in one of the hotel’s specialty suites. The Eve Branson Suite, which is named after the founder’s late mother, has the ambiance of a castle with architectural features from two centuries ago. Modern touches include a fiber optic ceiling and a Bose surround sound system. Richard Branson’s Flat is perhaps the best example of how the hotel successfully mixes historic architecture with modern amenities. It has a breakfast table and kitchenette in one room. There’s also a spacious bedroom, and the large bathroom has a soaking tub as its centerpiece.
