CRUISES FROM FLORIDA

MEET THE FUNSHINE STATE

BASK IN THE FUN ON FLORIDA CRUISES

People all around the world know Florida because there are few places that do “fun and sun” with quite the flair that this place does. And for all its deserved fame as a vacation destination, the Sunshine State is equally skilled at launching great vacations to other places. So imagine leaving from Florida and cruising to convenient, nearby locations like the Caribbean, The Bahamas… while we’re on the subject, you can even cruise to Mexico from Florida! See what we’re getting at? But if you’re cruising from Florida, 2024 or beyond, make sure to set aside some time to explore what’s good on land.

  • Jacksonville

Port Canaveral

Cruise from spots across florida.

With some of the best cruises from Florida, The Magic City is definitely a top homeport pick! But it’s more than Miami’s proximity to the Caribbean and Bahamas — this is simply a unique destination all its own. There are so many sides to Miami, and you can spend time exploring the city’s varied neighborhoods before or after you cruise. There’s party-ready South Beach, Coral Gables with its Mediterranean style, the spicy Little Havana, and even world-renowned Wynwood — center of street art.

What does it mean to be in the center of everything? When it comes to exploring Florida fun before or after a cruise, if you’re thinking Port Canaveral… you’re right on the mark! For starters, your cruise kicks off on the state’s iconic Space Coast, home to Kennedy Space Center and within reach of the Orlando area’s fun-packed theme parks. This all makes this a great place to launch yours! But Port Canaveral has natural thrills too: an entire coastline of sugary-sand beaches and protected islands for native wildlife.

Tampa’s the kind of place that rewards visitors who take a little time to explore the city before or after they cruise. Try it and you’ll see! Not far from the Gulf Coast you’ll find great shopping, the state aquarium and plenty of local art museums. But that’s before we even get around to talking about the historically Cuban district of Ybor City, with its lively 7th Avenue neighborhood that’s best explored after sundown for Latin-style nightlife.

JACKSONVILLE

Jacksonville is said to be the best of both worlds, with beachfront and urban vistas to explore. But make sure to add a third kind of scenery — a Carnival cruise — to your visit! Before or after you cruise you can enjoy the dining and shopping energy of Jacksonville’s downtown, but know that nature is nearby with the Southbank Riverwalk of the St. Johns River. And if you want to go full-on nature, you’ve got wildlife parks galore and miles of sandy beaches.

Best cruises from Florida: Our top 9 trips from the Sunshine State

Megan duBois

Cruises from Florida are the most popular options for travelers who wish to sail from the United States. It was only this year that Miami was dethroned as the busiest cruise port in the world — replaced by rival Florida home port, Port Canaveral.

Not only do cruises from Florida allow you to see some of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean and Bahamas, but they also allow travelers to experience some of the biggest and best cruise ships sailing right now. The largest cruise ship afloat, Royal Caribbean 's Wonder of the Seas, sails from Port Canaveral; family-friendly rival Disney Wish, the newest Disney cruise ship in a decade, also home ports in Florida.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Families planning multigenerational getaways, couples seeking child-free vacations and groups of friends looking to have a good time can all find their perfect ship and itinerary departing from one of Florida's six departure ports.

To give you a taste of the diversity of options available from the Sunshine State, here are our picks for the best cruises from Florida.

Wonder of the Seas to the Western Caribbean

ship cruise florida

Wonder of the Seas , Royal Caribbean's flagship and the largest cruise ship in the world, departs weekly from Port Canaveral (the cruise port closest to Orlando). The ship sails seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries, stopping at tropical destinations like Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay .

While the islands offer plenty of fun in the sun, the ship itself is filled with tons of family-friendly activities. Siblings or parents and kids can race each other to the bottom of the twin waterslides, named Typhoon and Cyclone. If you prefer to stay dry, hop into the Ultimate Abyss tunnel slide, where riders will glide down 10 stories of darkness before bottoming out on the ship's Boardwalk.

Kids ages 6 months to 17 years old have their own hangouts with dedicated programming supervised by fun counselors. While the kids play with new friends, adults can veg out in the glass-encased Solarium, relaxing on padded loungers or in a bubbling hot tub.

When it's time to come together for a meal, you'll please all palates at The Mason Jar , one of Royal Caribbean's newest restaurants that highlights Southern comfort food. The menu teems with tasty dishes like fried chicken, gumbo and po'boys that will leave you completely satisfied. Brunch here comes with a side of live country music.

Freedom of the Seas to the Bahamas

ship cruise florida

Cruisers who are loyal to Royal Caribbean or those who want to test the waters with the brand without the commitment of a seven-night sailing can enjoy short, three-night sailings on Freedom of the Seas out of Miami.

The quickie voyages take you to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay, and a day spent on Royal Caribbean's stunning island is reason enough to book this cruise. At this private Bahamian beach resort, cruisers can ride the slides at Thrill Water Park, rent a beachside cabana for a mix of shade and sun, or float about in a sheltered lagoon. A barbecue lunch is included, and passengers can utilize their onboard drink package.

The 4,635-passenger ship provides fun around every corner. Challenge one another to a round of minigolf, show off your skills on the FlowRider surf simulator or test your muscle on the rock climbing wall. Entertainment on Freedom of the Seas ranges from Royal Caribbean's iconic ice skating shows to live music in the pub. Pool parties, outdoor movies and laser tag are also included with your cruise fare.

With so much to do on board, plus the short sailing times, cruises on this ship can have a distinct party vibe. There's a reason that the College Party Cruise charter company uses Freedom of the Seas for its March spring break sailings.

No cruise is complete without great food, and this ship offers 11 different dining venues highlighting such cuisines as Italian, Mexican and Japanese.

Carnival Elation to the Bahamas

ship cruise florida

Carnival Elation is unique because it's the only ship from any cruise line that sails from Jacksonville. Its four- and five-day sailings to the Bahamas stop at Nassau and a second destination that varies. Choose from cruises to Bimini, Freeport, Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays — the latter two are private beaches operated by the Carnival Corporation.

The 2,606-passenger cruise ship is one of Carnival Cruise Line 's smallest and oldest ships. Aboard the intimate vessel allows you to get to know the crew and other cruisers. Popular hangouts include Carnival's beloved Alchemy Bar, where you can order cocktails at a vintage pharmacy-themed bar.

For outdoor dining, head to Guy's Burger Joint, created by celebrity chef Guy Fieri. Order a loaded burger and perfectly golden-brown fries, then head to the Lido Deck near the pool for great people-watching.

Entertainment on this small ship is still plentiful. Cruisers can splash around at WaterWorks, the family-friendly water playground, or head up to the adults-only Serenity Retreat for a quieter experience. The Punchliner Comedy Club hosts a variety of comedians that will have kids and adults laughing throughout the night. Catch a live production in the main theater or sing along with the pianist at the popular Piano Bar.

Carnival Mardi Gras to the Eastern Caribbean

ship cruise florida

If you'd prefer to sample one of Carnival's newest and largest ships, you can sail from Port Canaveral on the line's Mardi Gras . Its Eastern Caribbean sailings visit island destinations like St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Grand Turk. Mardi Gras' six- to eight-night itineraries provide a good mix of sea days at the start and end of the sailings.

The impressive ship is known for its party atmosphere, which is highlighted by an onboard zone themed to New Orleans' French Quarter. Here, passengers will find Emeril's Bistro 1396, an homage to NOLA's cuisine developed in partnership with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse. Don't miss the Brass Magnolia and the Fortune Teller bars, which start hopping when the sun goes down.

The Ultimate Playground on the ship's top deck is where adrenaline junkies and sports lovers will want to hang out. You'll get all the thrills with a ride on BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, or take a lap around the elevated ropes course. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, minigolf and a full-size basketball court await.

Disney Magic to the Bahamas

ship cruise florida

When the summer of 2024 rolls around, Disney Magic will set sail from Disney Cruise Line 's newest home port in Florida, Fort Lauderdale. The ship's shorter three- and four-night Bahamian itineraries include a visit to Nassau and either Castaway Cay, Disney's stunning private island, or Lighthouse Point, Disney's newest island destination . Longer five-night sailings include a stop at both private beaches or a double dip at Castaway Cay, along with a day at Nassau.

Disney Magic is among Disney's smaller ships, but fans love it for its intimate size and fewer crowds. Beloved Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse welcome you aboard with hugs and photo ops throughout your sailing.

Guests rotate each night among the ship's three dining rooms, including Rapunzel's Royal Table — inspired by Disney's animated "Tangled." There's also Animator's Palate, an homage to Disney's animation studios. You'll have the same servers at all restaurants, so they get to know your family and your dining preferences. At night the Walt Disney Theater features Broadway-caliber shows, like "Tangled: The Musical."

Families looking for some time apart will love that Disney has an included kids club where younger cruisers can enjoy fun activities under the watchful eye of the ship's youth staff. The Oceaneer Club features themed areas like Andy's Room from "Toy Story" and Tinkerbell's home at Pixie Hollow. Kids can also take superhero lessons from Thor. The Oceaneer Lab offers baking classes inspired by "Ratatouille" and sessions where kids learn how to draw their favorite Disney characters.

Adults can use their free time to savor a meal at the adults-only Italian restaurant, Palo, or kick back in the ship's multiple bars and live music venues.

Prefer to sail on a newer Disney ship? Check out Disney Wish , with three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay and Nassau.

Holland America's Rotterdam to the Southern Caribbean

ship cruise florida

Holland America is known for its elegant ships and longer itineraries, such as Rotterdam 's nine- to 16-night Southern Caribbean options out of Fort Lauderdale. The newest ship in the fleet, Rotterdam sails to Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba and Half Moon Cay on nine-night voyages, while its longer 16-day sailings add on Grand Turk, the Dominican Republic, and Key West.

With just 2,668 guests onboard, Rotterdam is homey and charming with a touch of luxury. The ship doubles down on live music; a live band plays all the rock hits at the Rolling Stone Rock Room, while an eight-piece band gets everyone on their feet when they play R&B favorites at B.B. King's Blues Club. For some daytime activity, the competition is on at the ship's pickleball courts , where cruisers can take lessons or play in tournaments against their shipmates.

Expect impeccable dining at specialty restaurants like Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French-inspired restaurant from Holland America's master chef Rudi Sodamin; Canaletto, an Italian bistro offering all of the classics; and Tamarind, where diners can sample regional dishes from China, Japan and Southeast Asia. For daytime snacks, don't miss the Dutch pancake bites called poffertjes or the French fries with peanut dipping sauce.

Norwegian Encore to the Eastern Caribbean

ship cruise florida

If you're looking for a weeklong cruise out of Miami, consider sailing on Norwegian Encore to the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas and Tortola. Each island offers spectacular sandy beaches that give way to sparkling blue waters, plus options for water sports, museum visits and hikes to the top of lush mountaintops.

The itinerary also includes a stop at Norwegian Cruise Line 's private island, Great Stirrup Cay. There you can enjoy a relaxing beach day, where all you have to worry about is getting back to the ship on time from the tender dock.

On board the ship, zip around the Encore Speedway in a go-kart, play laser tag in an Atlantis-themed arena, splash around the AquaPark or experience virtual reality games inside the Galaxy Pavilion. For a calmer diversion, purchase a pass to the Vibe Beach Club, an adults-only retreat with lounge chairs, umbrellas and specialty food and drinks. The pass is good for the entire cruise, so you can come and go as you please.

There's a wide range of dining options, including complimentary and extra-charge restaurants. Belly up to the Local Bar and Grill for classic pub dishes and cocktails on tap. If you're willing to pay extra for a meal, Q Texas Smokehouse is worth a stop. The a la carte restaurant serves authentic Texas-style barbecue and all the classic sides. After dinner service, the restaurant turns into a country dance club with a live band and an open dance floor.

Celebrity Apex to the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico

ship cruise florida

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Apex sets sail from Fort Lauderdale to some of the most picturesque islands in the Caribbean. From November 2023 through April 2024, Apex will offer weeklong sailings to Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and the Dominican Republic. Two sea days give you time to relax and have fun on the ship.

What makes this itinerary special is that it features later all-aboard times in San Juan and St. Maarten, allowing guests to see the islands as they come alive in the sunset glow.

Celebrity Apex is part of Celebrity Cruises ' Edge class of ships, with standout features like high-end design and modern touches. One of Apex's highlights is the Magic Carpet, a suspended lounge that hangs off the side of the ship. When it's positioned by the pool deck, you can stop in to sip cocktails; when it's at water level, it serves as a platform for easy boarding of tender boats.

There are lots of chic spots to chill with your travel companions. Savor some kebabs or a flatbread pizza among live plants in the ship's Rooftop Garden, then watch the sun sink into the sea at the aptly named Sunset Bar. Submerge yourself in a martini-shaped hot tub out on the pool deck or enjoy a dip on a rainy day in the covered adults-only Solarium.

With 29 different food and beverage options on Apex, cruisers will never be bored at meal times. Specialty dining includes Le Grand Bistro, themed after a traditional Parisian boulangerie-patisserie, and the Eden Restaurant, with its tasting menu of international dishes.

If you don't want to spend extra money on food, stick with the ship's four themed main dining rooms and the Mast Grill, which serves juicy burgers and hearty salads. The Oceanview Cafe serves made-to-order breakfast and lunch offerings, while dinner features a rotating menu with international flair.

Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady to Key West and Bimini

ship cruise florida

Step aboard the adults-only Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady for a Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise to Key West, Florida and Bimini, Bahamas, from Miami. The four-night sailings are great for cruisers who want to try out Virgin Voyages or those who want a long weekend away.

You can book an excursion in Key West, but it's easy to explore on your own. Take a ride on the hop-on, hop-off bus or saunter down Duval Street and around Old Town. For local fare, swing by D.J.'s Clam Shack for fresh seafood or Garbo's Grill for Korean barbecue beef tacos. Both were showcased on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives." Treat yourself to key lime pie on a stick before you head back to the ship.

In Bimini, head straight to Virgin's exclusive beach resort, the Beach Club at Bimini . Here, you can enjoy floating in the pool, Caribbean-themed lunch and games on the beach.

Scarlet Lady is a playground for grownups. The Redemption Spa is a relaxing retreat where you can book a block of time to enjoy the thermal suite or try out a couples massage. For a permanent reminder of your cruise, get a tattoo at Squid Ink . The ship is known for its creative theatrical performances and rollicking nightlife. Head to The Manor for comedy and drag shows, plus late-night revelry. Don't miss Virgin's hyped-up Scarlet Night, which culminates in an epic pool party.

All of the table-service restaurants on Scarlet Lady are included in your cruise fare. You won't find a traditional main dining room. To secure your preferred mealtimes, book dinner reservations through the Virgin Voyages app as soon as you can. Restaurants that are not to be missed include Extra Virgin for Italian fare; The Wake, the fine-dining steakhouse; and Gunbae, the Korean barbecue restaurant where you start your meal with a drinking game.

Port Port Canaveral cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Port Canaveral, Orlando, Florida. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Canaveral (cruise port to Orlando City, Florida USA) is currently ranked world's busiest cruise port (4,07 million cruisers/stats 2023) followed by Miami Florida .

As homeport, this is a major turnaround port destination (serving roundtrip itineraries) with annual shipping traffic 4,5+ million cruise ship tourists. Cape Canaveral is a leading USA homeport for all the world's largest cruise companies - CCL-Carnival , RCI-Royal Caribbean , NCL-Norwegian , DCL-Disney .

The world's top-10 busiest cruise ports (by annual passengers numbers/stats 2023) are in Florida USA (Port Canaveral/Orlando/4,07M, Miami /4,02M, Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale ), Mexico ( Cozumel ), Bahamas ( Nassau ), China ( Shanghai ), Spain ( Barcelona ), Bahamas (Out Islands), Texas USA ( Galveston ), Italy ( Civitavecchia-Rome ).

Cape Canaveral Port

Port Cape Canaveral (locode USPCV) is located on Florida's Atlantic coastline, between Miami and Jacksonville . Orlando City is bounded by Port Canaveral (north), Banana River (east), Cocoa Beach (south) and the Atlantic Ocean (west). As a deepwater seaport, Port Canaveral has a very high volume of traffic. From a total of 6 million cargo tons moved through the port annually, 2,7+ million tons (3 million short tons) are bulk cargoes. Common cargo includes petroleum, aggregate and cement. The port features hoppers and conveyors for loading products directly into trucks, as well as bulk cargo container facilities. The channel is about 13 m (44 ft) deep.

There are 70,000 m2 (750,000 ft2) of covered freight storage capacity. In 2004 Port Canaveral handled 3,6 million tons (4M short tons) of cargo. It exports fresh citrus and bulk frozen citrus juice is stored in one of the biggest freezer warehouses in the state. The port also receives salt for water softening, lumber, automobiles, steel sheets and plates. Port Canaveral transships items for sea, air, space and land. Its Foreign Trade Zone is one of the nation's largest general-purpose FTZs, more than 13 km2 (5 mi2). Each year the port boosts the economy by 1/2 billion dollars.

Port's cruise shipping business started in 1964, with SS Yarmouth Castle. The 1927-built steamship (for Chadade Steamship Company) was acquired by Yarmouth Cruise Lines in 1957. The liner was American-owned and Panama- flagged . In 1965, the ship burnt at sea (between Nassau and Miami).

The 1965-opened sea lock (part of Canaveral Barge Canal) is still in use, being maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Shipping and commercial fishing is also served by three 400 ft/120 m-long cargo piers constructed on the Port's north side in 1976. The seaport has supported NASA's space projects from the nearby JF Kennedy Space Center. During NASA's Apollo program, Saturn V rocket's segments transited via the lock. Space Shuttle's external tanks were floated for each mission into Port Canaveral, and the rocket boosters were towed back via the seaport, being fished from the Atlantic after each space launch.

In August 2015, commissioners approved USD 81 million port development project for upgrades of terminals 5 and 10, aimed at handling larger-sized vessels (details in the "terminal" section below). The project's financing was secured through bank loans and bonds.

Following President Donald Trump's executive order on immigration, in late-January 2017 were officially issued reports about cruise passengers being detained by US Customs and Border Protection. All detainees had to provide background info about them, their families and also their past life in their native countries. Trump's executive order was signed on January 27th and includes a 90-day ban on travel to the USA by citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Yemen.

In early November 2017, RCI-Royal Caribbean announced the company's decision to homeport here in 2019 the world's largest passenger vessel - Harmony of the Seas (max capacity 6687 passengers plus 2100 crew). Starting May 2019, Harmony OTS offers 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean roundtrip itineraries. Harmony replaced Oasis OTS (redeployed in 2019 to Miami ). Also in 2019, Mariner OTS (max capacity 4200 passengers plus 1180 crew) was homeported here for 3-4-night roundtrips to The Bahamas. The ship first arrived in Port Canaveral in 2003 (inaugural cruise on November 14).

In December 2017, Carnival Cruise Lines announced the homeporting of Carnival Elation in 2019. Starting May 12, 2019, the ship operates year-round scheduled 4-5-day "long weekend" Bahamas cruises. Departures are on Thursdays (4-day itinerary to Freeport and Nassau ) and on Mondays and Saturdays (5-day itinerary to Amber Cove Dominicana and Grand Turk Island ).

In December 2017, Port Canaveral completed the 6-month long West Turning Basin deepening project, now allowing max draft of 45 ft (13,7 m). Port's containership terminal (North Cargo berths 5 and 6) is operated by GT USA. The dredging works removed 22,3+ million ft3 (632,000 m3) of seabed material. For the dredging was contracted Dutra Group (based in San Rafael, California). The project's total cost was USD 7,5 million, with approx 2/3 of the cost covered by FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation). The Port's entry channel was cleared from obstructions (bridges, power lines) and is now without air draft restrictions. West Turning Basin has quay length ~600 m (2000 ft) and draft 13 m/43 ft - making it one of East Coast USA's deepest cargo berths without vessel air draft limits.

In January 2018 was approved the construction of a new multi-purpose cargo ship berth NCB8 (North Cargo Berth 8). By the project were also built a seawall (900 ft / 274 m) and a pier extension (100 ft / 31 m) with capacity to handle vessels with max LOA length 850 ft/259 m.

  • At the new berth can be handled various heavy project cargoes (including aerospace). Berth's depth is 35 ft (11 m).
  • The USD 17,9 million berth construction contract was awarded to the Tampa -based company Orion Marine Group. The contract includes building the bulkhead, seawall, relieving platform and dredging. Construction works started in March 2018, with scheduled completion by mid-2019.

In May 2024 were approved the plans for the construction of a new multi-user cruise terminal (Terminal X) at the existing North 8 Berth, directly opposite to/sharing the turning basin with Terminal 5. Terminal X is planned for inauguration in 2026 July. For the design was contracted AtkinsRealis USA Inc.

In 2018, two port development projects received funding for maintenance works in the seaport. The contractor is USACE (US Army Corps of Engineers). For the projects were allocated USD 14,76 million (Canaveral Harbor Sand Bypass and jetty upgrades) and USD 1,47 million (Harbor and Locks).

On December 5, 2018, Canaveral Port Authority (CPA) approved a series of bonds (up to USD 117 million) for financing "Cruise Terminal 3" (dubbed "Launch Pad") project. In 2021, at the new CT3 Terminal was homeported Carnival's newest and largest ( LNG-powered ) liner Mardi Gras .

  • The project's financing package included bonds up to USD 80 million (30-year, Series A and B) and up to USD 37 million (20-year loan, Series C) by SunTrust Bank (specializing in mortgage, personal and small-business banking). The bank is subsidiary of the Atlanta GA-based SunTrust Banks Inc (reported assets in March 2018 USD 199 billion).
  • Additionally was approved to increase Port's PNC Bank credit line from USD 25 to 50 million. The port also received from Florida Department of Transportation USD 6 million in grants for the infrastructure works.
  • Carnival Cruise Terminal 3 has a dedicated wharf, adjacent parking (6-storey, capacity 1800 vehicles) and a newbuild road. The project's total improvements cost USD 163 million, of which $50 million were contributed by Carnival Corporation . The facility was completed in September 2020, but due to the crisis was inaugurated on June 4, 2021, with the arrival of Mardi Gras.

On May 22, 2019, Disney Cruises signed with CPA a 20-year operating agreement for homeporting two of its three newbuilds . Under the new deal, Disney has 3 boats homeported here (2 new, 1 old) which increased the number of guaranteed roundtrips from 150 per year (2019) to 180 (2023) and 216 (2024 and beyond).

In early March 2020 was launched an RO-RO Division in Port Canaveral - a dedicated vehicle terminal with max annual capacity 240,000 cars. The 16-acres terminal is at South Cargo Pier 4 and serves mainly new import automobiles. The terminal has a large climate-controlled warehouse (sized 20,000 ft2 / 1860 m2). In FY2019, the port handled a total of 12514 vehicles.

Following the port's ban for cruise ship dockings and passenger operations (due to the COVID pandemic), in the period April 3 through May 30, 2020, Canaveral Port Authority furloughed all its employees dedicated to cruise shipping operations.

For a 5-month refurbishment project in 2020 (June through November) was closed CT8 (Disney Cruise Terminal 8).

In April 2023, Port Canaveral officials proposed the construction of a new cruise terminal (Terminal 8). The US$175 million facility could be built on the Port's southern side, and completed and opened in July 2026.

In August 2023 was allocated US$68,16 million for two new cruise parking garages (an 8-level near Terminals 5 and 6, and a 6-level near Terminal 10.

Cape Canaveral port statistics

Note: Port's FY (fiscal year) runs from October 1 (current year) through September 30 (next year).

In FY2017, the cruise port handled 4,52+ million passengers (6,4% increase over FY2016). The number of multi-day passengers (4,234+ million) was 7,1% increase over 2016. Statistics showed that just in March 2017, the number of visiting cruiseship tourists was 469,847. This was the Port's 1-month record and a 19% increase over March 2016. Port's FY2017 total revenues were USD 47,4 million (freight and passengers).

For FY2018, the seaport reported a record year with USD 103,75 million in total revenues (218,9% increase over 2017). Cargo and cruise shipping volumes were also an all-time high. The number of handled cruise ship passengers increased by 7,7% - to 4,568431 million. Port's handled cargo tonnage increased by 6,9% - to 6,404944 million tons. Port's total economic output was USD 3,9 billion with around 32650 jobs supported (USD 1,3 billion in wages) including 17200 port workers (USD 0,7294 billion in wages).

For FY2019, the port had ~5% growth (over FY18) in revenues from cruise shipping. By homeporting operations (turnarounds) Port Canaveral is currently ranked the world's 2nd-busiest (after Miami) cruise port with handled in 2019 total 4,634154 million passengers (4,568431 million in 2018).

For season 2019, the cruise port reported a record berth booking with estimated 4,7+ million passengers.

In 2023, Port Canaveral reported a record year with handled 906 cruise ship calls, 13 homeporting ships, ~6,8 million cruise tourists, US$158 million in revenue from cruise shipping operations. For season 2024, the Port had booked 913 ship calls and expected ~7,3M passengers

Port Canaveral cruise terminal

Besides being a large cruise port, Port Canaveral is also among the USA's/and the world's largest naval and cargo ports. On average, each day 10 cruise vessels enter the port.

Port Canaveral's cruise terminals serve several major cruise shipping companies. Terminal 5 is the homeport for ships of RCI-Royal Caribbean , Celebrity , NCL-Norwegian , Marella UK . Terminal 6 serves ships of CCL-Carnival and Princess . Terminal 10 homeports ships of MSC and NCL.

The following cruise port map shows Port Canaveral port's infrastructure, the location of terminal facilities, connecting roads and transportation links to Orlando City.

Port Canaveral is the nearest Disney World city, situated about one hour east of Orlando by car. The Orlando Airport is 45 mi/70 km away. The driving distance to Tampa is 2 hours, to Jacksonville - 2,5 hours.

There are seven cruise terminals, but in regular use are 5 - numbers 3, 5, 6, 8 and 10. They are newer, located on the Port's north side, and serve larger ships. Southside terminals are older. Gambling ships use Terminal 2. Terminal 3 is the new Carnival Cruise Line's terminal.

Currently, Terminal 4 is also used, but rarely. In April 2024 was announced a plan for a new facility at Terminal 4, to be completed in 2026.

The cruise terminal parking rate is USD 15 per day (Port Authority subject to change). There is a parking lot beside each cruise terminal. Port Canaveral offers complimentary cruise parking for disabled Veterans. Approved are waiving cruise parking fees for vehicles with DV (Disabled Veteran) license plates issued under Florida Statutes "s.320.084", "s.320.0842" or "s.320.0845".

In August 2023, Port Canaveral commissioners allocated US$67,46 million for constructing two northside cruise parking garages. For the projects was contracted Ivey's Construction Inc. The larger facility (an 8-level garage with capacity 1940 vehicles) is adjacent to Terminals 5 and 6, while the smaller one (a 6-level garage with capacity 1081 vehicles) is near Terminal 10.

(NEW) Cruise Terminal 8 (2026)

In April 2023 was proposed the construction of a new cruise terminal on the Port's southern side.

The US$175 million facility could be completed and opened in July 2026.

This proposal for a new passenger terminal came after two newbuild large cruise liners were homeported year-round in Cape Canaveral starting in 2024-Q4.

Approved in May 2024, the proposal included in the Port's budget for FY2023 (October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2023). FY23 was marked by increased cruise shipping traffic and stronger-than-expected, cruise-related revenues (including from parking) estimated at US$150,87 million. The previous estimate was US$124,48M. This represented ~83,7% of Port Canaveral's total projected operating revenue (US$180,35M) including from cargo shipping/handling, recreation, leasing, and other business activities. It was estimated that the Port's FY23 will have US$75,43M profit (including non-operating revenues and expenses) which was US$53,36M before FY23's budget began. The profit was used for port development projects and for reducing debt from previous projects.

In May 2023, were announced plans for a new cruise terminal at Bluepoints Marina's site. The facility (projected cost US$175M) would be ready/inaugurated in 2026.

The new multi-user Cruise Terminal 8 (aka Terminal X) is at the existing North 8 Berth (directly opposite to/sharing the turning basin with Cruise Terminal 5). The facility includes a multi-story parking garage (max capacity 3000 vehicles), road improvements (including turning lanes and a flyover ramp connecting Terminal 8 with State Road 401).

The project includes a pier extension and mooring improvements (Phase 1) and a bulkhead parallel to State Road 401 (between Terminal 5 and Terminal 8) in Phase 2.

(NEW) Carnival Cruise Terminal 3 (CT3-Launch Pad)

In late-April 2017, Port Canaveral started construction works on a new cruise terminal.

The facility is on the site of "Cruise Terminal 3" (port's southern / B side), west of Jetty Park and east of The Cove (dining-shopping-attractions complex). On June 7, 2017, engineering and design works for the new terminal were officially approved.

Canaveral Port Authority Commissioners approved US$1,2 million in funding for CH2M Engineering's project management contract. This was Phase I of the 2-year work plan to construct a modern facility with capacity to serve vessels with max capacity 8000 passengers.

At the new passenger terminal can berth even the world's largest cruise vessels of RCI's OASIS-class. CH2M Engineering provided engineering, support services and waterside design for the new Terminal 3.

The project's budget is USD 163 million (initially estimated cost was US$150M), of which US$50M contributed by Carnival Corporation . Ranked the USA's largest single building project, it included the demolition of the port's oldest terminal, construction of a brand new 2-story building (sized 17466 m2 / 188,000 ft2), upgrading the existing berth and building a new (adjacent to the terminal) parking garage, roadway and utility improvements.

The 20-month-long, multi-phased project included 5 separate contracts. Demolition works (of the existing Terminal 3 building) started in April 2018, at the cost of US$210,000.

  • Following the building demolition, the project's next phases included berth demolition, dredging, dockside construction, building passenger boarding (mobile) bridges and terminal building, site works, building a covered parking garage (6-story building, sized 690,000 ft2 / 64,100 m2, capacity 1800 cars).
  • On August 30, 2018, the Canaveral Port Authority (CPA) Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a long-term terminal operation agreement with Carnival Cruise Line, allowing the company to homeport here its newest and biggest liner .
  • Beginning September 1, 2018, the new agreement replaced the old (6-year concession) expiring in 2019. The new 25-year primary term has 4 additional 5-year renewal options. The minimum annual revenue from passenger fees (guaranteed by Carnival) was increased from USD 7 million (fixed, per year) to USD 14,5 million (with annual escalators).
  • On January 8, 2019, the CPA Board of Commissioners awarded the company Ivey's Construction Inc the USD 79 million contract for building Cruise Terminal 3, plus USD 29,53M contract for building the adjacent parking.
  • On April 24, 2019, Canaveral Port Authority commissioners unanimously approved several design changes in the CT3 Project to reduce building costs. Ivey's Construction Inc (Merritt Island-based) won the contract in January with a bid of USD 78,98 million. However, design changes resulted in total savings of USD 4,535 million, bringing the terminal's total cost down to USD 74,45 million. In all, "Cruise Terminal 3" costs USD 163 million when are added the costs of the adjacent parking garage, waterside improvements, two passenger boarding bridges, design services. Plans were redesigned after engineering studies reduced the number of needed piles (also their size and coating) without sacrificing the structural integrity.

The new Carnival Cruise Terminal (CT3) is a 2-story building (sized 187,000 ft2 / 17370 m2) with max passenger capacity 6500 at a time. Among its amenities are electronic systems to facilitate passenger screening, mobile check-in (for expediting boarding), ATMs, restrooms, waiting and baggage halls, retail shopping area, info kiosks.

Construction works officially started on March 18, 2019, and the Terminal was completed in September 2020.

At the new CT3 terminal was homeported Carnival's largest vessel Mardi Gras (GT 180,000 tons, LNG-powered , capacity 5286 berths / max passengers 6500). The new liner's LNG bunkering is dockside (barge-to-ship).

Mardi Gras docked for the first time on June 4, 2021, and was joined later on the same day by the fleetmates Carnival Freedom and Carnival Liberty .

North (A Side) Cruise terminals (5, 6, 8, 10)

They are located on the A dock at the north side. Along is the Charles M Rowland Drive.

All are up to date and can handle the biggest passenger ships. Especially for Disney Cruise Line ships was built Cruise Terminal 8.

For a 5-month refurbishment project in 2020 was closed Disney's Cruise Terminal 8 (June through November). The closure was for installing a new curtainwall-pile (breakwater), removing ticket counters, extending the drop-off canopy, replacing the current seating.

In 2016, about USD 2,3 million were spent at Disney Terminal 8's renovations. This cruise facility is used exclusively by Disney ships. Cruise Terminal 10 was reopened on November 19, 2016, following USD 35 million expansion and upgrade project which took 6 months to complete. Terminal 10 (1994-built) is used by NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) .

Renovation works included increasing the size of the 2-story terminal building (from 97,050 to 125,825 ft2 / 9016 to 11690 m2). Lower floor's baggage processing area was increased from 42,800 to 64,400 ft2 (3976 to 5983 m2). Upper floor's passengers check-in area was increased from 54,250 to 61,430 ft2 (5040 to 5707 m2).

The development project allowed the terminal to handle larger cruise ships (carrying up to 5,500 passengers). Previously, its max capacity was 3,600 passengers.

Among the major projects of the Cruise Terminal 10 renovations were:

  • USD 25,69 million for terminal renovations, with H.J. High of Orlando as contractor. The downstairs area where baggage processing occurs increased from the previous 42,799 ft2 to 64,396 ft2. The upstairs area where passengers check-in increased from the previous 54,249 ft2 to 61,428 ft2.
  • USD 4,48 million were invested into new mobile Passenger Boarding Bridges (by the Spanish manufacturer ADELTE). The new mobile bridge systems replaced the old fixed gangways and provide better flexibility when used by differently-sized cruise vessels that have different heights and boarding door locations.
  • USD 1,79 million were used for the existing cruise pier strengthening. The contractor (Vortex Marine of Oakland, California) used carbon fiber polymer technology to reinforce and extend the pier's life and structural capacity.

In 2016 was completed a USD 48,4 million renovation project at Cruise Terminal 5 (used mostly by Carnival Cruise Line ). Among the improvements were terminal expansion, pier elongation (by 120 ft / 37 m), new mobile boarding bridges, new parking garage (capacity 1044 cars). The 1991-built Terminal 5 now allows berthing of larger ships (with up to 3500 passengers / previously up to 2500). For the project were contracted a total of 87 companies.

South (B Side) Cruise Terminals (2, 4)

They are located on the B dock at the southwest side. Along is George King Blvd. They were among the Port's first cruise facilities and can handle not more than 1900 passengers.

(NEW) Cruise Terminal 1

On November 5, 2016, Port Canaveral received its ever largest passenger ship - Oasis of the Seas . The mega-liner docked at the new "Cruise 1 Terminal" (inaugurated in December 2014). Oasis OTS was homeported here replacing the smaller Freedom OTS .

The facility's main tenant is RCI Royal Caribbean and was designed specifically to handle Oasis-class vessels. The new terminal is sized 188,000 ft2 (17,470 m2) and has a dedicated parking garage with capacity 1007 vehicles. The project cost USD 104,6M.

We took our 4, 2, and 1 year old boys on the cruise while on vacation and the crew of the ship was able to interact with each one. The kids all got booty and still talk about the pirates and the swords and pistols. Well worth the money!

We loved every minute of this pirate adventure! They’re very entertaining and the kids enjoyed the whole experience a lot. We went home and my kids still pretended to be pirates. Highly recommend it!

What it’s like aboard Tampa’s new cruise ship Margaritaville at Sea

  • Sharon Kennedy Wynne Times staff

TAMPA — Starting Friday, a sold-out cruise will sail from Port Tampa to Mexico with Parrot Heads aboard the newest ship in the Jimmy Buffett-themed cruise line Margaritaville at Sea.

We took a two-day preview tour of The Islander in advance of the first of its four- and five-night excursions to Mexico and Key West. The cruise line is known for its low prices and high-octane parties and music. The Islander is the second ship in the Margaritaville fleet, a completely refurbished 85,000-ton ship that was formerly operated by the Italian Costa Cruises.

The first sight on board is a dramatic 14-story atrium with a giant teal Margaritaville flip-flop (and nearby pop-top) at the base. It has multi-story margarita glass chandeliers, floating fish, parrots and a replica of Buffett’s own personal seaplane soaring high above the Flip Flop Bar.

With 1,105 staterooms, The Islander has double the capacity of the Palm Beach-based Paradise ship that the cruise line has operated since 2015. Islander cruises start at $229 to Mexico and Key West and start at $479 for longer trips that in 2025 will include Belize on a seven-day itinerary.

The ship sports sleek retro and tropical stylings, all in service to the fans of the late singer known for bringing a chill attitude and appreciation for sun, surf and strong drinks with a twist of lime. Buffett’s music ranges from country to rock, folk and Caribbean tales of sun-bleached days searching for a shaker of salt. That gives the cruise line a lot to work with.

The Cheeseburger in Paradise burger bar offers up a tasty smashburger lunch next to the pool at the three-story Landshark Bar. The poolside jumbo screen plays films of Buffett’s concerts, like the time in 2010 he performed barefoot in Gulf Shores, Alabama, singing “Fins” with the Gulf of Mexico glistening behind him.

The trip begins with a 5 O’Clock Somewhere Sail Away Party that even in this week’s rainy weather drew passengers to the top deck to cheer as the ship sailed under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. A giant rainbow greeted the ship as it passed the spans of the Skyway on its first excursion Tuesday.

True to its partying nature, there are 13 themed bars and lounges sprinkled throughout the ship, each with its own signature margarita and live music at some point in the day or night. And it’s not just Buffett’s music. Tom Petty and Paul Simon tunes drift out of the lounges, and live shows range from pop acts to an electric violin.

There’s a piano bar called Bubbles, a Coral Reefer Lounge and a tip of a Panama hat to Cuba in the Havana Dreaming Sports Bar that is a sports bar by day, with marble tabletops, crushed red velvet seats, a replica of an old Chevy as a picture backdrop and lots of rum drinks. At night, it becomes a Latin nightclub with a band loudly cranking salsa and Latin pop tunes.

At the Stars on the Water Theater (named for Buffett’s 1983 country rock hit), dancers and aerialists put on high-energy shows. One, called Caribbean Heat, is set to tropical-themed pop tunes. In a new show called Conky Tonkin’ (the original name of Buffett’s pairing with Kenny Chesney in 2004′s “License to Chill”), the dancers combine a Coyote Ugly bar scene vibe with a jukebox musical of classic country tunes, from Johnny Cash to modern country hits.

“This ship is a home run ... in the making,” said veteran cruiser Harvey Horowitz, who traveled on the preview with his wife, Phyllis. The Lake Worth retirees have been on the Palm Beach Margaritaville Paradise ship many times. It’s cheap, they said, and close to their east coast home. But this ship, at twice the size and sparkling in its newness, won them over.

The “in the making” caveat from Harvey comes from the many hiccups that a new operation understandably undergoes. The Wi-Fi broke, they briefly lost hot water in their room and their meals were mostly up to par, though small serving sizes and some other misses gave them pause.

“But for the price, you have a lot to work with,” he said. “The layout is really easy to navigate, the staff is great and there’s lots to do. So I think this will be a home run for the area.”

Meals at the Port of Indecision Buffet or the Fins dining room were familiar cruise offerings like Cajun gumbo and Huli Huli chicken, though portions tended to be small without a lot of flair. The Mexican Cutie Cantina and a decent pizza at Frank & Lola’s are among the five complimentary dining options. Then there are six “specialty dining” options for an extra free, ranging from a JWB Steakhouse to sushi, specialty coffees and an adults-only Tiki Grill.

Charges add up quickly for bigger rooms, technology packages, fancier restaurants, express check-in, drink packages, extra fees and gratuities. Some critics have complained that such nickel-and-diming can make the cheap admission price misleading. But defenders have noted that at that price you can expect middle-of-the-road fare on the dinner plate while enjoying the sleek stylings of a newly upgraded ship.

It has a Margaritaville-inspired cornhole and mini-golf course alongside family-friendly spaces like the Caribbean Amphibian Splash and Slide and a pickleball court.

Ashley Hartig, a Sarasota lifestyle and parenting influencer on Instagram @Ashley.Hartig and on Tik Tok @thehartigfamily , said after her time on the ship “this is going to be really great for this area, to get that vacation feel so close to home.”

“It’s just a short trip and you get taken away to this Caribbean escape,” she said.

She said her impression was that it was going to be a booze-cruise party boat, “but this had way more options for kids and families than I expected.”

Florida cruise passengers spot six Russian warships as NATO tensions escalate

Cruise ship passengers were left concerned after catching sight of Russian warships from their cabin windows , prompting a grave warning from a top defense expert .

Holidaymakers on the cruise vessel reported seeing six ships cruising by in broad daylight off the Florida coast, at the same time NATO ships are circling Russia in escalating tensions .

"I just happened to look outside and I saw one of the ships, so I went outside to investigate," one holidaymaker told CNN. "I could see six ships at one time across the horizon. There have been ships in sight most of the day. I was surprised how close they are, we are not that far off shore."

  • Russia declares World War 3 in terrifying broadcast
  • Nuclear war map shows safest US states to buy home in case of nuclear war

The encounter occurs as NATO vessels are currently shadowing a Russian naval group headed for Cuba, just as it was revealed Russia has enlisted female convicts to flight in the war in exchange for their freedom .

The fleet includes US warships USS Truxtun, USS Donald Cook, and Piedra CG (758); Canadian Navy vessel HMCS Ville de Quebec (FFH 332); French Navy ocean patrol ship Teriieroo A Teriierooiterai (P780); and the Frigate La Fayette (FS Guepratte F714).

The Russian navy recently carried out exercises in the Atlantic, showcasing Russia's determination to extend its influence amidst escalating strains with the West over Ukraine .

Defence pundit Nicholas Drummond conveyed to the Daily Express: "It's a big mistake to antagonise and play nuclear blackmail with the US. A huge mistake. It's likely to galvanise US support for Ukraine on an increased level. In other words, it's a massive own goal."

Dr Stepan Stepanenko, Director of Consultancy firm Forward Strategy, has downplayed the military threat posed by Russia.

Speaking to the Daily Express, he said: "These visits underscore the deepening military and economic cooperation between Russia and Cuba, especially as the island nation increasingly relies on Russian support amid its worst economic crisis in decades."

"The reality behind these deployments, however, reveals a much less formidable picture of Russian naval power. The Russian navy, once a symbol of Soviet might, now often finds itself mired in mechanical failures and operational inefficiencies."

"A striking example of this is the Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia's sole aircraft carrier, which infamously broke down while traversing the English Channel in 2018, trailing a plume of black smoke that starkly contrasted its intended image of naval prowess."

He further explained that Cuba's strategy of hosting Russian vessels is a key part of its military approach given the geopolitical isolation it faces.

"Decades of economic sanctions and political ostracism from the West have driven Cuba into the arms of Russia, a relationship that benefits Moscow by allowing it a foothold close to US shores," Dr Stepanenko stated. "Yet, the fact that this is only the second such fleet deployment to the island in many years highlights both the fragility of the relationship and the dire state of the Russian fleet, ostensibly unable to conduct such operations regularly."

"It's time to rethink our approach to Cuba. The collective West's economic and political campaign against Cuba's repressive government has yielded little change. Instead, a more effective strategy would involve appealing directly to the Cuban people, who are increasingly disillusioned with their pseudo-communist regime. Encouraging and supporting democratic change on the island would not only improve the lives of its citizens but also remove the allure of a Russian alliance."

In other news, the Russian Defence Ministry has reported that the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and the Kazan nuclear-powered submarine were involved in an exercise simulating a missile strike on a group of enemy ships. The drill was a computer simulation aimed at targets over 372 miles away.

The Admiral Gorshkov is a key asset in Russia's naval capabilities, now armed with the new Zircon hypersonic missiles. These advanced missiles, which can be fitted onto Russian cruisers, frigates, and submarines, have the capacity to hit both maritime and land targets.

  • Walmart to make huge change to 2,300 stores in 'game-changer' for shoppers

President Vladimir Putin has been vocal about the prowess of the Zircon missiles, noting their ability to evade any current anti-missile systems by travelling at nine times the speed of sound and covering distances exceeding 1,000 kilometres.

Joining the Admiral Gorshkov and the Kazan submarine are two auxiliary ships, all scheduled to dock in Havana, highlighting what Cuban officials call the "historically friendly relations" between Russia and Cuba.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry has confirmed that the Russian warships docked in Havana from Wednesday until June 17 are not carrying any nuclear weapons and pose no threat to the region. This comes after Putin's warning that Moscow could arm Western adversaries if Ukraine's allies allow Kyiv to use their weapons against targets in Russia, marking a significant escalation in tensions

Band of storms bring 'life-threatening flooding' to South Florida, snarls I-95

Editor's Note: This page is a summary of news on the flooding in South Florida for Wednesday, June 12. For the continuing coverage on severe weather in South Florida, view our file for Thursday, June 13 .

The National Weather Service warned "life-threatening flooding" was drenching South Florida Wednesday evening as the onslaught shut down a swath of critical I-95 by Fort Lauderdale.

"High water vehicles are deployed strategically around the city and ready to respond as needed," Fort Lauderdale officials said in a post on X. "Avoid driving if possible. Never drive through high water."

The deluge has caused hundreds of flights bound to and from South Florida airports to be grounded.153 flights leaving Miami International were canceled, according to FlightAware , a plane tracking website; 149 flights headed for Fort Lauderdale International were canceled, equivalent to 34% of arrivals; and hundreds of flights were delayed out of the two airports.

Forecasts expect Southwest and South Florida to bear the brunt of the storm. Some areas have seen more than 7 inches of rain, with more expected through Friday. Lee County and Fort Myers could see an additional 10 to 15 inches of rain before the system moves all the way through, according to the National Weather Service. In one area near the Big Cypress National Preserve, more than 15 inches of rain has already fallen.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Indiana Miranda said I-95 would be closed "until further notice and water drains from the Interstate."

The torrential rains were expected to continue for hours. Meteorologists issued a tornado watch in Palm Beach County.

"Catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding is expected to continue into the evening hours across south Florida with an emphasis on the highly urbanized and densely populated I-95 corridor from Fort Lauderdale south through Miami and Homestead," the National Weather Service said in an advisory about the "extremely high-impact flash flood event."

Florida governor declares state of emergency

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for five counties after the torrential rainfall this week, with additional rain expected to "further exacerbate" ongoing flood conditions over already heavily impacted and vulnerable areas. The declaration includes Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade and Sarasota counties.

At 7:30 p.m., the weather service issued a broader flood warning for Broward and Miami-Dade counties, given the 5-13 inches of rain that has already fallen with additional rain expected.

Flooding in rivers, streams, canals and other low-lying areas is occurring or imminent, the warning said. Several structures have flooded, and numerous roads remain closed.

"It will take several hours for all the water from these storms to work through local drainage systems in urban areas," the weather service said.

– Dinah Pulver

Floods hit Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean J. Trantalis declared a state of emergency and said Florida Fish and Wildlife would send boats and buggies. Eyewitness footage showed a person kayaking down a boulevard of the seaside community between Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Flooding last year caused officials to pull the plug on its historic City Hall building, and city employees decamped early from their temporary offices Wednesday because of the weather, a spokesperson for the mayor's office said.

The rain Wednesday comes as the city is in the process of installing $500 million in stormwater infrastructure upgrades, including tidal control valves, drainage pipes, raising seawalls and constructing stormwater reserves, the mayor told USA TODAY via email.

"We're accelerating plans and trying to keep up with climate change and sea level rise as we're seeing more intense and unprecedented rain events like this," Trantalis said.

Floods remind South Florida resident of last year's deluge

Milena A. Amit runs a downtown Fort Lauderdale law firm with her husband. She abandoned plans to work late Wednesday evening when the rising floodwaters outside began giving her flashbacks of last year's deluge.

“It’s becoming like an annual aquatic rodeo,” said Amit, 41. “They called it a once in a generation storm of flooding, but little by little it’s becoming not such a unique event.”

She, her assistant and her husband piled into his Lexus GX SUV, a towering car she said they bought exactly for such emergencies. Other office workers left their cars in the garage and went to high ground to call an Uber. At least one person decided to camp at the office, something many realized was a possibility after 25 inches of rain fell on the city in 24 hours last year.

“Before last year, if somebody said that to me, I would say you're being sensational for retweets,” she said. Now, “it’s becoming an inside joke, ‘Everybody bring an air mattress.”

The New York native moved to South Florida in 1996 and said the floods have become more and more disastrous as the city has grown in size. She was concerned about what the rest of the summer could bring.

“We're also in the infancy of our hurricane season,” she warned. “While we made this out OK, we brought my assistant home safely, we’re engaged with our staff about what’s happening tomorrow, a lot of people don’t have that capability and it’s sad to see.”

Storm ensnares cars and shutters restaurants in Sarasota

Residents in Sarasota, about 60 miles south of Tampa, were reeling from Tuesday's downpour, which brought a whopping 5-10 inches of rain to the area. Some downtown restaurants closed Wednesday while others were left deserted as flooding swept through outdoor patios.

Mattison’s City Grill general manager Darryl Dillon said water crept into the outdoor patio for the first time in a storm that wasn’t a hurricane.

“Nobody was out,” Dillon said. “I stepped out of my car into a foot-and-a-half of water.”

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office received 18 service calls for cars stuck in water and four calls for abandoned cars. The county's fire department received 43 calls for cars stuck in floodwater, 39 calls for fire alarms and 15 calls for downed wires. Between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 a.m. Wednesday, personnel responded to 282 total calls for service – 100 more than their daily average.

Assistant Fire Chief Tim Dorsey said crews were able to safely evacuate people trapped in vehicles, but some residents chose to stay in their cars until the water receded. Crews will continue to be on alert in case residents need assistance throughout the rainy week.

“It’s static water,” Dorsey said. “They’re not in any danger. If the water was moving or other scenarios that would make it more dangerous, we would definitely extricate them from the vehicle.”

– Melissa Pérez-Carrillo and Heather Bushman, Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Flood safety tips.

The Red Cross encourages people to assemble an emergency preparedness kit, including food, water, a flashlight and a first aid kit. People should create an evacuation plan “and ensure each family member knows how to get back in touch if they are separated during an emergency.”

Emergency officials encourage people to “learn and practice evacuation routes, shelter plans and flash flood responses,” in case they need to get to higher ground quickly.

Flash flooding can come with no warning, so individuals may want to assemble kits before potential storms.

People can use the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s online resources and other tools to understand their area’s risks for flooding.
