Downtown Indianapolis Things To Do

We are kicking off our list in the urban core – called Mile Square. The area hosts some of the best attractions in Indianapolis!

#1 Climb to the Top of Soldiers and Sailors Monument

Street View of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Indianapolis, Indiana

Climbing to the observation deck of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is a must-do Indianapolis activity. Standing at 285.5 feet in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument honors Hoosiers who fought in America’s earliest wars.

The monument, which was completed in 1902, is a symbol of the city and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside, visitors can start by climbing 330 for panoramic views of Indy. Climbing up the stairs is one of the best things to do in Indianapolis for free, but you can also ride an elevator for a small fee.

Pro Tip : The nearby City-County Building also offers a free observation deck for visitors.

#2 Walk the Indianapolis Cultural Trail

Walking the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Indiana

Without a doubt, one of the best things in Indianapolis is walking, jogging or biking the Cultural Trail. The 8-mile paved path weaves through downtown Indy passing some of the best cultural institutions in the city.

Along the route, there are multiple works of art. Visitors intrigued by historic figures should not miss the section called The Glick Peace Walk, which celebrates the lives of profound luminaries.

Today, the Indy City Market is a bustling food court with some of the best eateries under one roof. Diners will find a wide range of fare – from southern comfort food to authentic Mexican tamales to Parisian crepes. Just keep in mind, the City Market hours vary and it is currently undergoing a massive makeover.

Pro Tip: One of the unusual Indianapolis points of interest is a nearby plaque honoring Elvis Presley. The King played his last concert at the Indianapolis Market Square Arena (which is no longer standing) in 1977.

#4 Go Underground to the Indianapolis Catacombs

Visitors looking for unique things to do in Indianapolis should consider going underground to the city’s historic catacombs.

The subterranean passageway leads through brick barrel-vaulted arches under the City Market Whistler Plaza. It was used for storing goods for the market upstairs, and many people believe it’s one of the haunted places in Indy.

Top Tip: The catacombs can only be visited by a tour on select Saturdays by Indiana Landmarks . (Unavailable during the market renovation.)

#5 Stand in Awe at the Indiana War Memorial

Unfortunately, The Greatest Spectacle in Racing only occurs one day of the year. However, visitors can experience the thrill of the race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum year round.

For a full dose of nostalgia, visitors should head west to one of the cool places in Indianapolis: Tibbs Drive-In Theater.

Showing both retro classics and new releases, Tibbs Drive-In theater has been a mainstay in Indy since 1967. Featuring four screens (and a concession stand), guests pick a parking space and tune in the movie sound on their FM radio.

Pro Tip: We believe going to a drive-in theater is one of the best things for couples to do in Indianapolis, but it’s one of the top Indianapolis attractions for families.

#37 See Sculptures at the Indianapolis Art Center

One of the more relaxing activities to do in Indy is to visit the Indianapolis Art Center. The 6 galleries at the free Indy Art Center feature exhibits created by local and national artists. The highlight, however, is the outdoor riverside Artspark, where nature and sculptures co-exist.

Local Tip: Long-term visitors can enroll in one of the many art classes taught at the center.

#38 Pay Respects at the Crown Hill Cemetery

View from Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana

Established in 1863, the historic Crown Hill Cemetery ranks as the third-largest cemetery in the United States – and it’s one of the top attractions in Indianapolis.

Covering 555 acres, the cemetery encompasses 25 miles of paved road that winds through architecturally beautiful mausoleums, monuments, memorials, tombstones and a Gothic chapel.

Visitors can view the graves of Indy’s famous residents – like US President Benjamin Harrison, poet James Whitcomb Riley and bank robber John Dillinger. Tours are available for those who want an in-depth look at the history of the burial ground.

Pro Tip: There is a phenomenal Indianapolis skyline view from the highest point in Crown Hill Cemetery. Follow the signs for the James Whitcomb Riley gravesite for a great downtown Indy view.

#39 Appreciate the Artwork at Newfileds Art Museum

Outdoor Art at the Newfileds Indianapolis Art Museum

Spending a day appreciating the artwork at the Indianapolis Museum of Art is one of the top things to do around Indy. Masterpieces, pop art and art from around the world are on display.

In addition to the Indy Art Museum, the sprawling Newfields campus is home to multiple attractions. The highlight is the restored Lilly House, which dates to 1913. Guests are invited to tour the interior and gardens.

While most visitors think of Newfields as one of the indoor things to do in Indianapolis, there are outdoor attractions, too. At the on-site Virginia B Fairbanks Art and Nature Park (which is free), guests can seek out sculptures. Furthermore, the entire Newfields grounds are open for the public to enjoy (and are perfect for a picnic).

Fun Tip: The Newfields outdoor summertime Beer Garden is a unique place to relax and enjoy a local craft beer.

#40 Frolic in the Flowers at the Garfield Park Conservatory

Showcasing hundreds of tropical plant species from around the globe, visiting the Garfield Park Conservatory ranks as one of the interesting Indianapolis, Indiana things to do.

Promoting a rainforest theme throughout, visitors will find flora like orchids, palms and ferns. Some of the other noteworthy plant species to see are the vanilla, banana and coffee plants. The Sunken Garden is also not to be missed.

Budget Tip: Visiting the Garfield Park Conservatory costs just a few dollars, making it one of the cheap things to do in Indianapolis, IN. Plus, the kid-friendly Blake’s Garden is free.

#41 Reflect on the Monument at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Park

The moment at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Park, Indianapolis, Indiana

The Landmark for Peace (also known as the Kennedy-King National Commemorative Site) at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park is an Indianapolis must-see monument.

The site features Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy extending a hand to each other. It commemorates both the assassination of King and the speech given by Robert Kennedy in Indianapolis on the night of his death.

Pro Tip: The words from Kennedy’s speech are displayed on a nearby plaque.

#42 Create your own Glass Artwork

One of the fun things to do in Indianapolis for couples and families (with kids aged 10 and up) is learning the art of glassblowing at GRT Hot Glass Studios. Under the instruction from pros at GRT Glass Design, visitors are guided through the process of glass making – and leave with their very own crafted piece!

Top Tip: Visitors can join one of the classes or book a private lesson.

Great Parks in Indianapolis

Some of the best places to visit in Indianapolis are the great outdoors! While we have already mentioned some of the top outdoor activities in Indy, visitors who really want to immerse themselves in nature should seek out these nearby parks.

#43 Eagle Creek Park

Eagle Creek Park is a massive nature area northwest of the city. With forest, meadows, ponds and a reservoir, it’s the top green space near Indy for hiking, biking, fishing, boating and zip lining. Other top attractions at Eagle Creek are the nature center and bird sanctuary.

Pro Tip: While Eagle Creek Park is one of the fun things to do around Indianapolis, there is a fee to enter.

#44 Fort Harrison State Park

A park for all seasons, Ft. Harrison State Park is one of the favorite outdoor things to do in Indianapolis. Canoe on Fall Creek in the summer, hike through the colorful leaves in the autumn, sled down the hill in winter and see the flowers in bloom in the springtime.

Additionally, Fort Harrison has a dog park, nature center, picnic areas and a barn where visitors can go horseback riding.

Top Tip: There is a fee to enter Fort Harrison State Park, which is charged per vehicle.

#45 Glenns Valley Nature Park

Although smaller than the other recommended Indy parks, the Glenns Valley Nature Park features wooded hiking trails, grassy picnic areas and a sledding hill for snowy days. The beautiful Glenns Valley House at the top of the hill is available for rent for private events.

Budget Tip: Visiting Glenns Valley Nature Park is one of the fun free things to do in Indianapolis!

#46 Holliday Park

A fantastic green space just north of the city, Holliday Park is one of the top things to do in Indianapolis, IN – especially for families. In addition to the enormous Nature Center and playground (both top Indianapolis kids activities), the park boasts trails through wooded forests and blooming gardens.

The most intriguing part of the park, however, is the Ruins. These are the remains of a New York City building made of Indiana limestone that was saved from complete demolition.

Travel Tip: There is no admission to enter Holliday Park – it’s another free thing to do in Indianapolis, Indiana!

What To Eat in Indianapolis

St. Joseph Brewery, German Platter, Indianapolis, Indiana

One of the best things happening in Indianapolis is the foodie scene. If you are wondering what to do in Indianapolis on your weekend trip, put a few of these epic eateries on your list!

Indulge in an Indianapolis Tenderloin Sandwich

Before we get to our list of Indy restaurants, we need to chat about one of the must-do things in Indianapolis: Eat a pork tenderloin sandwich.

The tenderloin sandwich – sometimes called a Hoosier Tenderloin – is the most famous food in Indianapolis. The large-but-thin pork cutlet is breaded and deep fried, then served on a way-too-small hamburger bun. It’s delicious and an Indianapolis tradition.

Foodie Tip: Mug-n-Bun is an old fashioned drive-in on the west side of Indy that is notorious for making the biggest and best tenderloin.

Bars and Restaurants in Indianapolis

We have already highlighted some of the best places to eat in Indianapolis above. That said, visitors spending a weekend in Indianapolis should include one – or more – of these iconic bars and restaurants on their Indy itinerary!

St. Elmo Steak House

An upscale eatery in the heart of Indy, the landmark St. Elmo Steak House specializes in steaks, but is better known for their world-famous shrimp cocktail.

The Rathskeller

A German beer hall that serves sophisticated German fare, as well as steaks, seafood and pasta – and has live music.

Bru Burger Bar

A Midwest chain, Bru Burger Bar specializes in gourmet burgers and features a long list of craft beers.

Inspired by Latin flavors, Livery is a chic urban restaurant situated along Mass Ave and boasts a fun rooftop for summer gatherings.

Slippery Noodle Inn

The oldest bar in the state of Indiana and once a stop on the Underground Railroad, the Slippery Noodle Inn serves up a heaping dose of eclectic history alongside fun vibes, live music and a big menu of pub favorites.

Goose the Market

A gourmet butcher shop and market known for charcuterie boards of smoked and slow-cured meats, which are provided by Smoking Goose.

Hotel Tango

A brick warehouse distillery (not a hotel), Hotel Tango is a veteran-owned distillery that specializes in crafted spirits.

A diner tradition since 1960, Steer-In was featured on the Food Network for their stuffed pizza, hearty home-cooked meals and all-day breakfast.

His Place Eatery

A soul food and BBQ restaurant, His Place Eatery features southern classics and savory meats.

Rock-Cola 50’s Café

With a nod to the past, Rock-Cola Café is a 1950s style diner with counter service, rock-and-roll memorabilia and all-American eats.

Long’s Bakery

Sugar cream pie might be the state dessert, but visitors should not miss out on the donuts at Long’s Bakery. Simple and scrumptious, they are the best donuts in town – so expect a line!

Coat Check Coffee

Located inside the Athenaeum Building in a hip space, Coat Check Coffee serves hand-crafted coffees, delectable pastries and bialy breakfast sandwiches.

Where To Get Brunch in Indianapolis

Brunch may be in order during your Indianapolis weekend getaway. There are a few restaurants in Indy that specialize in the mid-morning meal. Garden Table, Yolk, Café Patachou, Good Morning Mama’s Café and Milktooth are all good options for a weekend brunch in Indy.

Eat dinner at one of the iconic restaurants (listed above) or head for Mass Ave and pick somewhere that suits your style. After dinner, bar hop your way up Mass Ave or spend the evening at a theater performance.

Day 2 of your Indianapolis Weekend Itinerary

Ease into the day with a filling brunch at one of the city’s best restaurants. Then, set off for more adventures in Indianapolis.

Sunday Mid-Day

Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

  • Beyond Cars

jalopnik

Memorial Day Weekend in Indianapolis offers tons of things to do when you're not at the Indy 500.

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

The Indianapolis 500 may be the pinnacle of American open-wheel racing, but if you’re making the trip, you might want to experience a little more of what Indianapolis has to offer — especially since the event’s nonstandard format leaves plenty of free time between on-track activities. If you need a little something else to keep you occupied, we’ve got you covered.

Find Your Favorite Driver’s Street Sign

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

Each year, different streets in downtown Indianapolis are temporarily renamed after all 33 drivers that will take the green flag on race day. If you’re an avid race fan, it can be a lot of fun to wander the streets and pose with your favorite driver’s sign.

Check out the 500 Festival

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

The 500 Festival is an organization that hosts tons of different events around Indianapolis inspired by the Indy 500. You can nab tickets to Breakfast at the Brickyard or line up to watch Saturday’s driver parade — both of which I highly recommend.

The Last Row Party

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

Hosted by the Indianapolis Press Club Foundation, the Last Row Party is a way to celebrate — and roast — the drivers that make up the final and 11th row of the Indy 500 starting grid. These are the drivers that were just quick enough to make it into the show but who were still much slower than the pole sitter. The event takes place every year on the Thursday before the race; tickets are $75, but you get to eat tons of food (the buffet is excellent) and drink wine in the Pagoda. Worth it? Absolutely.

Autographs, Autographs, Autographs

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

If you’re keen on a driver autograph, it can be tough to get at the Indy 500. That said, on the Saturday of the race weekend, you can get to the track early to line up for the full-field autograph session — a name that’s a little misleading, since the field of drivers is split into their starting rows, and you have to select a row to nab autographs from those three drivers. I’ve been able to hit two or three rows in the past, but the session is only an hour, so you have to strategize! Start off in what you think will be the longest line (i.e. the row with the most popular drivers) and then hit up some of the shorter lines after. This session runs from 9 to 10 a.m. local time.

Go to the Zoo

Yes, this is me going nuts about the touch pool

I love many things in this world, but there is no better weekend for me than visiting a zoo and then going to watch a race — and the Indianapolis Zoo is one of the finest I’ve ever seen. I make a point of going every year if I can, despite the fact that I am a grown adult.

Have a Drink

A cider and mead flight at New Day

If you’re of legal drinking age and wish to partake in some local brews, Indianapolis has an incredibly fun beer scene . I could go on and on about it for days, but my personal favorites are Metazoa (a dog-friendly bar), Daredevil Brewing Co., and Rad Brewing Co. (formerly Flat12). If you want a nice brew and a hot meal in Speedway after the race, check out Big Woods.

If beer isn’t your style, then I highly recommend New Day, a cidery/meadery with an incredible selection of drinks. I go every year to stock up on strawberry rhubarb mead... and usually end up bringing it to the race as my alcoholic beverage of choice.

Never Stop Eating

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

The first time I went to Indianapolis, I can’t say I was exactly expecting much of a food scene — but I was pleasantly proven wrong. Whether you’re keen on a fancy brunch at Café Patachou, hungry for a massive amount of cheap donuts from Long’s, or ready for fried chicken at The Eagle, you really can’t go wrong. Just be warned that hotspots like St. Elmo’s will be busy all weekend, so it’s best to make reservations for more popular places.

(And not to continue going on about Big Woods in Speedway, but their macaroni and cheese is literally worth driving across the country for. Trust me. I’ve done it.)

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is a gorgeous collection of 500 history that I recommend for any racing fan. Every time I go, I find some new tidbit that sends me off on a research spiral when I get home.

Pro tip: You’re definitely going to have a better time at the IMS Museum at any time that is not Indy 500 weekend (and if you go in the dead of winter, you can take advantage of discounted merchandise), but if you’re a history buff, it’s worth braving the crowd.

Tour Speedway, IN

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

Speedway, Indiana is technically the home of the Indy 500, and it’s a cute little town that plays host to Sarah Fisher’s karting facility, Ed Carpenter Racing’s shop, Dallara’s factory, and A. J. Foyt’s wine shop. Local residents also go all-out decorating their homes and yards for the race weekend; if you want to pass some time near the track, Speedway is the place to be.

Children’s Museum

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

You don’t have to be a child to enjoy the Indianapolis Children’s Museum — you just need to access your inner child. During the month of May, there are always tons of racing displays.

Indianapolis Cultural Trail

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is an eight-mile long walking and biking path in downtown Indianapolis featuring different gardens, bridges, and more. I’ve tried to walk the length of it multiple times and have always failed, largely because you’re inevitably going to get distracted by a restaurant, bar, or other attraction.

Visit Broad Ripple

Just a little sample of the goodies you can buy in Broad Ripple

Broad Ripple is a neighborhood just six miles from downtown Indianapolis, and it is gorgeous . If you’re a fan of boutique shopping, gastropub fare, and indie vibes, you’re going to love Broad Ripple. It’s one of the few places where I was able to find vegan food when I was of the vegan persuasion. I got tattooed in Broad Ripple. It’s also the home of The Shop , which sells tons of unique IndyCar merchandise.

Eagle Creek Park

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

Eagle Creek Park is the only place on this list that I haven’t visited, but I’ve wanted to for one specific reason: The Go Ape Treetop Adventure , where you can indulge in zip lines, rope crossings, swings, ladders, and more. I cannot imagine having any more fun than crawling around in the trees.

Walk the Monon Trail

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

The Monon Trail is a former railway line that has been converted into a walking and biking path in the Indianapolis area. It’s a whopping 26 miles long if you’re looking to check out the whole thing — but even just a short jaunt down the shade-lined path can be nice.

Watch Some Other Sports or Something

Image for article titled Best Indy 500 Weekend: 15 Things to Do in Indianapolis

I hear that there are other sports that happen in Indianapolis, maybe with balls? I don’t know much about that, but you can probably find a stadium to tour or a game to see.

15 Best Things to Do in Downtown Indianapolis

Downtown Indianapolis, Downtown Indy or the Mile Square whatever name it’s given, and it goes under the guise of all three, is an ever-expanding downtown district. Since receiving the moniker of Mile Square back in the early 1800s, the city’s founding district has grown to encompass six and a half square miles in total and become a boomtown which now includes nine neighborhoods, and is still in expansion.

Explore Downtown Indianapolis to discover tranquil canals with Italian-style gondoliers, a cathedral easily mistaken for a Scottish castle and a glass-roofed garden full of art. Go subterranean in spooky catacombs, stroll along fascinating cultural trails or be inspired by a museum dedicated to collegiate sports.

This is a downtown district full of surprising activities both cultural and social, so don’t miss out on any of these best fifteen things to do in Downtown Indianapolis while you’re there.

1. Gondola Canal Ride

Gondola Canal Ride, Indianapolis

If you thought the only place to hear a gondolier sing O Sole Mio while navigating canal waters was in Venice, you need to think again. Head to West Michigan Street in Downtown Indianapolis, and next to the waterside Fresco Cafe, you’ll find the moorings for Old World Gondoliers.

Take a thirty or sixty minute ride along Downtown’s Central Canal while being serenaded by a gondolier in full Venetian-style costume. The gondoliers carry between two to eight people or can be hired privately.

Don’t forget to tip the gondolier for his melodic accompaniment.

Also checkout the Indianapolis Massachusetts Avenue Food Tour

2. Scottish Rite Cathedral

Scottish Rite Cathedral

The Scottish Rite Cathedral is a dominant landmark in Downtown Indianapolis which wouldn’t be out of place in the heather covered highlands of Scotland.

The cathedral was built in the late 1920s and is one of the biggest Masonic buildings anywhere in the world. Owned by a Freemason affiliated group, the cathedral contains many Masonic symbols as well as a sixty-six square foot dance floor in a columned, wood-paneled ballroom plus a one thousand seat theater.

Guided tours of the facility, narrated by a knowledgeable historian, are available several days of the week and there is also an on-site cafeteria for drinks and snacks.

3. Pacers Bike Share

Pacers Bike Share

Speed around Downtown Indianapolis sightseeing on a bright yellow bike from the Pacers Bike Share Scheme.

There are multiple bike stations all over Downtown Indy in convenient locations right next to many of the district’s main attractions. A day pass entitles the user to unlimited thirty-minute rides throughout an entire twenty-four hour period.

Home to award-winning restaurants, a growing craft beer scene, and funky art galleries, Indianapolis is quickly becoming one of the coolest cities in the Midwest. Add that to the city's already-established and beloved museums, parks, Indianapolis Colts, and world-renowned Indy 500 race, and you've got a city that has a little bit of everything for everyone.

To help you find the best things Indy has to offer, we've put together a guide to help you plan a trip to Circle City. Hoosiers are some of the most welcoming people you will ever meet, so you will feel right at home when you get there.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: The weather is best at the end of May and early June, and during September and the beginning of October. If you are wanting to attend the Indianapolis 500, though, you should plan your trip for May.
  • Language: English
  • Currency: U.S. dollar
  • Getting Around: Until recently, you needed a car to get around in the "Crossroads of America." You can rent one at the airport or call an Uber or Lyft to get around. Alternatively, you can take the Red Line, which IndyGo recently introduced. This rapid-transit line travels 13 miles and runs from Broad Ripple to the University of Indianapolis. Another option is to get a bikeshare , which costs $1 a ride, plus an additional 15 cents every minute.
  • Travel Tip: You need to be prepared for all types of weather in Indianapolis. The weather shifts in unpredictable ways, and if you come in the spring or fall, it's a good idea to pack for all four seasons.

Things to Do

Trailing Washington, D.C., in having the country's largest number of war memorials , Indianapolis undoubtedly has an interesting history that's waiting to be explored. Dive into the city's history at one of its many museums—but if history isn't your thing, no worries. There are a bunch of family-friendly activities to enjoy, including the Children's Museum of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Zoo. And that's not to mention the city's budding culinary scene and growing number of beloved breweries.

  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway: The Indy 500 is the city's biggest event of the year—but even if you aren't in town for it, you can still visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum . Here, more than 25 cars that have won the race are on display, as well as the Borg-Warner trophy, and other memorabilia. You can also take a ride around the famous track and "kiss the bricks."
  • The Children's Museum of Indianapolis: This is the largest children's museum in the world , and you don't even need to have kids to enjoy it. Here, you can discover dinosaurs and an Egyptian tomb, and explore everything from an international space station to a 35-foot-long steam engine. There's even a gigantic playground—complete with musical instruments and an underwater pond habitat—for children five and under.
  • White River State Park: This park is home to many downtown attractions: the Eiteljorg and Indiana State Museums, the Indianapolis Zoo, and the NCAA Hall of Champions. In the park itself, you can find public art sculptures, outdoor concerts on the Farm Bureau Insurance Lawn, and a lovely promenade along the Central Canal.

What to Eat and Drink

If Indiana had a state dish, it would be the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich: It's a giant cutlet of pork loin that has been pounded thin, coated in breadcrumbs or saltine crackers, and deep-fried. In order for this to truly be a pork tenderloin sandwich, though, the meaty portion has to essentially dwarf the hamburger bun that holds it all together.

For dessert, the sugar cream pie (also known as Hoosier Pie), is a state staple. It's exactly what it sounds like, a delicious concoction of sugar and milk, cream, or half-and-half. If that's too sweet for you, try persimmon pudding, a moist cake topped with ice cream, whipped cream, or crème anglaise. And be sure to pick up some gourmet popcorn while you're in the area.

But the city isn't all fried foods and sweet treats. With three semi-finalists in the 2019 James Beard Awards , Indy is gaining quite the culinary reputation. Order up a cheeseboard at Bluebeard , or go for the shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo Steak House . Indianapolis is also home to a wealth of incredible breweries, so try a craft beer or two during your visit.

Where to Stay

If you want to be right in the heart of things and intend to check all the sights off your list, you should book a hotel downtown (also known as Mile Square). It is close to all the main attractions and is very walkable—although the hotels here can be more expensive.

If you're less into history and museums and more into trendy spots, book a stay in the historic Fountain Square. With an eclectic range of restaurants, shops, and live entertainment, this quirky neighborhood has transformed into an artsy enclave in recent years. Likewise, Broad Ripple is a good option if you're looking for another great selection of restaurants, art galleries, artisan and vintage shops, and a buzzing nightlife scene.

Explore the different neighborhoods you can stay in, and our recommendations on the best hotels .

Getting There

If you are flying, book a ticket to Indianapolis International Airport to kick off your trip. To reach downtown, your best option is to rent a car, but you can also take an airport shuttle, bus, or a Lyft or Uber to get there.

There is also a Greyhound station at the Indianapolis Bus Station . You can get to and from every major U.S. city with this option. Or, you can take an Amtrak into the city.

Money Saving Tips

Indianapolis is one of the cheaper cities in the the U.S., but there are still ways to cut back.

  • Many museums participate in Free Museum Days, which take place throughout the year. You can usually get free entry to most places on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, while others offer free admission on Presidents Day, Smithsonian Museum Day, and more.
  • From 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, you have to pay a parking meter; however, parking is free on Sundays.
  • You can find free live music throughout the city and surrounding suburbs in the summer.
  • The oldest family-owned winery in Indiana offers free tours at 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. on weekends. Afterwards, you can taste seven different wines for $5.

This City In New York Was Named The Number One City In America, Here's Why

10 underrated small beach towns in florida to kick the winter blues, 10 scenic upstate new york road trips that should be on your bucket list, quick links, attending the indy 500, getting to the indianapolis motor speedway, dos and don'ts of attending the indy 500, here are the things to do during indy 500 weekend in indianapolis.

There are many places to celebrate Memorial Day Weekend in the US . However, one of the best states to visit is Indiana, which is home to plenty of beautiful towns , and where there are so many amazing things to do and natural attractions to witness . However, there's one city particularly worth visiting in Indiana on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, which has Indianapolis getting revved up for the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. If booking a trip to Indy around this single-day road race, know that there’s a lot more to see and do in the "Racing Capital of The World."

Race Day is the name of the day when the Indianapolis 500 happens; tickets can be purchased online here . There are two types of admission available. The Reserved Seat ticket provides not only a reserved numbered seat but also admission to the grounds and viewing mounds at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The second option is a General Admission ticket, which gives ticket holders access to the Speedway’s infield viewing mounds to watch from different vantage points.

There are corresponding events leading up to or held on or after Race Day that require separate tickets. The Indy 500 Snake Pit is an infield EDM concert at the Speedway on the same day as the Indy 500. Its all-star lineup features well-recognized acts within this musical genre, including Kaskade, Subtronics, John Summit, Jauz, and DJ Diesel (aka professional basketball player Shaquille O’Neal).

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is located in the town of Speedway, about a 20-minute drive from Indianapolis. Yet don’t assume that a parking spot right at Speedway is a given. All lot parking at the Speedway for the Indianapolis 500 Race Day is validated by buying a parking pass in advance. Forgive the pun, but they go pretty fast.

However, there's another transportation option. The advance purchase of a Race Day Shuttle Pass permits a pickup between either the Indianapolis International Airport or downtown Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway also lists details on road closures on Race Day and other information online . Their mobile app features interactive maps and news alerts and can access digital tickets.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway's website has a list of items you can and can’t bring inside. No selfie sticks, please. Glass containers aren’t permitted, either. Coolers can come in, but their size must not exceed 18 inches by 14 inches by 14 inches. Outside food and drinks can be brought in. Carts and wagons can come in on Race Day as well, but they have to be collapsible. Trained service animals are allowed, but the family pet isn’t.

It’s best for Reserved Seat ticket holders to get to the gate nearest to their seating location by 10 a.m. Gates open at 6 a.m. and then close at 4 p.m.; the famous green flag waves at 12:45 p.m.

Be sure to check the local weather report. If it is sunny and hot, lather on the sunscreen and be sure to stay hydrated.

If you decide not to see the Indy 500 in person, don’t plan on watching the race in real time on local TV. It gets blocked out on local media–the ban was lifted in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic and in 2016 because tickets completely sold out–while it's happening. However, the race is aired later that day.

Before or after Race Day, set aside some time to cruise near or around Indianapolis. There are many suggested stops to make.

During the Indy 500 Weekend in Indianapolis, a plethora of engaging experiences await visitors. From thrilling races to captivating events, the city comes alive with excitement, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for all who partake in this legendary celebration.

Visit The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum

Located at the Speedway, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum preserves and promotes the legacy of auto racing and the speedway itself. More than 25 Indy 500-winning cars are on view amid displays of photographs, fine art, trophies, and other racing artifacts.

A theater presents an eight-minute-long film on the speedway’s history or pay for a photo op in the driver’s seat of a vintage race car. The museum also schedules a number of tours, with one providing a behind-the-scenes look at the speedway and another heading into the museum’s basement repository.

Take Youngsters To The Children’s Museum Of Indianapolis

Inspired by its founder’s visit to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, this Indy children's museum has grown since in its start in 1925 to become known as the biggest children’s museum in the world. Indoor and outdoor exhibits introduce various-themed and playful environments involving history, science, sports and pop culture. Their event calendar is packed with live theater shows and daily programming. Children can have their time on the racetrack through the museum’s Indianapolis Motor Speedway Pedal Car Racetrack Experience.

Go For A Meal At The Garage Food Hall

In Indy’s Bottleworks District, occupying what was once the garage buildings for a Coca-Cola bottling plant, this marketplace features an eclectic food and beverage vendor line-up. Among them, Poke Guru puts an Asian fusion twist on this Hawaiian dish, Panadas prepares Venezuelan dishes, and Alex’s Garage Tap’s beers can be paired with orders.

There are also retailers and a business space set aside for pop-ups. Its nearby neighbor is the Bottleworks Hotel , an Art Deco building turned boutique property.

Find Food And Fun In Fountain Square

A mile southeast of downtown Indy, the neighborhood of Fountain Square is a creatively cool district. It is full of restaurants, galleries, shops, and amusement venues coinciding with a vibrant arts scene. Its centerpiece is the Fountain Square Theatre Building , a circa 1928 venue that started as a place of entertainment then and still serving as one now. Its current tenants extend to duckpin bowling and retro duckpin bowling alleys, a lobby bar and game room, and a rooftop bar.

Dining options within Fountain Square can extend to Three Carrots Fountain Square , which prepares vegan and vegetarian versions of Midwestern eats; Revolucion , a hip Mexican cantina with patio seating; and Yaso Jamaican Grill , a cozy venue that's big on Jerk chicken, curried goat, ackee and salt fish and other Jamaican specialties.

Go On An Indiana History Walk & Talk

Indianapolis is full of multi-faceted histories. Local guide and Indiana native Sampson Levingston tells about them through his platform, Through2Eyes . Levingston leads what he refers to as “Walk & Talk” history tours. One of them brings attendees to Indiana Avenue, a Black cultural and commercial hub in its prime and linked to notable figures, including entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker.

“Walk & Talk” highlights can include the "Indiana Avenue Jazz Masters" mural depicting Indianapolis-associated jazz legends from the 1950s and 1960s. Painted on a wall at Musicians Repair & Sales, a music store, the mural features David Young, Jimmy Coe, David Baker, JJ Johnson, Slide Hampton, Freddie Hubbard, Larry Ridley, and Wes Montgomery.

Dine In At St. Elmo SteakHouse

Around 1902, this downtown Indy landmark stays pretty busy but even more so during the Indy 500 weekend. As the oldest Indianapolis steakhouse in its original location, St. Elmo Steak House retains its old-school vibes with black vested, white-shirted, and black bow-tied wait staff and a fine selection of steaks and other prime cuts of meat.

However, their jumbo shrimp cocktail in their spicy signature cocktail sauce is a showstopper. Or order one within their 1933 Lounge By St. Elmo , a speakeasy-style space on the second floor. Note: the restaurant is closed on Memorial Day; reservations are strongly recommended.

Have Dessert At A Storybook Bakery

Ordering a sweet treat from The Cake Bake Shop is like stepping into a fairytale. The author of this true story is the shop's founder and owner, Gwendolyn Rogers, who drew upon her childhood love of baking to open a small business in Broad Ripple Village. Inside a former cottage, the transformative space is captivated by French doors, white marbled tables, and sparkling chandeliers. A display case looks magical with scratch-made cakes, pies, cookies, cheesecakes, and French pastries. Bringing some baking magic home is encouraged, as a gift shop carries sprinkles, cake toppers, cookware, and extracts.

Start with a slice of Gwendolyn's Famous Earl's Court Chocolate Cake. This decadent dessert has gotten high marks from celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey. It is three layers of French Valrhona chocolate cake, with a Callebaut Belgian chocolate ganache and a chocolate malted cream. The shop has a second location in Indy's Carmel City Center.

This thorough process guarantees transparent and unbiased reviews, helping you make informed decisions for an unforgettable vacation experience.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.
