Local destinations, themed holidays, about thompsons, zanzibar holiday packages.
Zanzibar holiday packages offer a chance to immerse yourself in a heady mix of palm-fringed beaches, turquoise seas and a melting pot of exotic cultures. Lying off the coast of Tanzania , Zanzibar is a romantic Indian Ocean island paradise that is still relatively untouched. It’s the largest coral island off the shores of Africa and is famous for its centuries-old sailing dhows, ornately carved wooden doors and the scent of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg – hence its nickname, the 'Spice Island'.
Zanzibar’s main town, Stone Town, is the oldest part of the island and boasts 45 mosques, the Slave Market, the Old Fort, Dr Livingstone’s House and the Zanzibar Marubhi Palace ruins. The surrounding islands offer opportunities for further explorations. One of the most popular is Pemba, famous for its excellent scuba diving, deep-sea fishing and a variety of water sports in the untouched marine environment of the Pemba Channel. There’s also Prison Island, home to giant tortoises, and tiny Mnemba, only inhabited by the staff and guests of the luxurious &Beyond Mnemba Island all-inclusive resort.

What Our Customers are Saying
Beautiful Country!
Zanzibar is such a beautiful country, the hotel was perfect, beach perfect and everything ran smoothly. Thank you for organising everything, we had absolute no hick ups and will definitely go back there. The people at the hotel was so friendly and so accommodating, there was special dinners, shows and activities.. the all inclusive was also so worth it. Please keep us updated with Zanzibar specials in the future.
Stefan Blommaert
The trip was Fantastic. We made good uses of the vouchers you arranged for us.
Thank you once again for organising this trip. I really loved the hotel and the fact that they have something planned for every night. I loved that it was perfectly located next to one of the popular clubs which host epic parties on Sunday evenings (Yes Sundays..strange I know) The beach is stunning. And I enjoyed the food
Nekhumbe Mulalo
Amazing Time!
We had an amazing time! Thank you very much for everything. The resort was good, we had some issues with pipes bursting in our room and aircon not working but the management team of John and Steven was very assisting and those issues were sorted quickly. Other than that we had an amazing time. Everything went smooth from transfers to book-inns. Thank you very much for all the arrangements.

Jambo! This is the Swahili greeting that you will hear on arrival in Zanzibar from the warm and inviting locals. As the number one beach location in East Africa, Zanzibar is a wonderful beach holiday destination, with classic tropical beaches, lush plantations, an incredible history and a fascinating culture.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, Zanzibar’s Stone Town is a mishmash of cultures, languages and architecture. Over the centuries, Stone Town has grown from a small fishing village to a thriving town with an extraordinary history. Apart from historic Stone Town, with its labyrinth of narrow streets, Zanzibar is known for its beautiful palm-fringed beaches and pristine coral reefs. Whether you spend your days lazing by the pool, sipping cocktails on the beach at sunset, diving in warm waters or enjoying a Dhow cruise around small islands, your Zanzibar holiday will be a memorable experience.
We love Zanzibar for its irresistible charm and exotic beauty. From exploring the unique blend of African, Arab, and Indian influences to indulging in the aromatic spices and delectable local cuisine, Zanzibar captivates the senses at every turn. Whether you seek relaxation on sun-kissed shores, thrilling underwater adventures, or a fascinating journey through history, Zanzibar promises to leave an indelible mark on your heart and soul.
Zanzibar is a few degrees south of the equator and enjoys a very tropical climate. The average daytime high is between 28°C and 32°C and the night-time lows are between 20°C and 25°C. Temperature wise, Zanzibar is an all-year-round island holiday destination. February is very hot and very humid (just leave your hair straightener at home!) and March to May are the wettest months.
The indigenous language spoken throughout Zanzibar is Swahili (called Kiswahili locally). English is widely spoken and understood. Jambo Rafiki – Hello my friend! The local currency in Zanzibar is Tanzania Shillings (TSH) but the currency cannot be bought outside of the country. Cash (US Dollars) and credit cards are accepted at hotels and at any Bureau de Change. We strongly recommend that you take USD cash in small denominations for incidental purchases, tips etc. Effective from 01 October 2024 all visitors to Zanzibar are required to purchase mandatory insurance at a cost of $44 per person which can only be obtained through Zanzibar Insurance Corporation via their website https://visitzanzibar.go.tz As Zanzibar is situated in a malaria zone, it is recommended that you consult your physician on the correct preventative medication required before you travel.
Be sure to pack plenty of beach and casual wear for the day while at night you’ll want something smart casual men may need to wear long pants. When in town, men and women should have their shoulders and knees covered. Bermuda shorts and a polo shirt are perfectly fine but halter-tops and miniskirts are insulting to locals. You may also want to take an umbrella or rain poncho if you’re travelling from March to June.

Zanzibar is an attractive tropical island that combines perfectly with a safari experience in Tanzania. Zanzibar boasts some of Africa's finest swimming beaches, world-class scuba-diving sites, luxurious beachfront resorts, the finest spices in the world, and a wide range of water sports. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on a tropical beach, explore the cultural attractions of Stone Town, or indulge in several adventure activities, this island affords you the gift of choice and an unforgettable getaway.
Zanzibar has a tropical climate allowing you to plan your seaside vacation in this part of Eastern Africa at any time of the year without any extreme variability in temperatures. The monsoon breezes blowing in from the Indian Ocean help to maintain its warm temperatures.
The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October during the cool, dry months of spring. Another popular time to visit this tropical island is from December to February when it’s hot and dry. The ocean temperatures are perfect for swimming, diving or snorkeling expeditions.
There are two best times to scuba dive off the coast of Zanzibar, in July and August and in February and March. Diving off the north coast is particularly good from June to October and off the south coast between November and March .
Zanzibar Island has two wet seasons, the long rains and the short rains. The long rains in Zanzibar begin in the month of March and pick up the tempo in April and May, dusting off by June while the short rains fall in the months of November and December . We don’t recommend visiting Zanzibar during the rainy seasons.
Unguja, also known as Zanzibar Island, is the main tropical island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar.
Boasting some of the finest swimming beaches in Africa, as well as world-class scuba-diving sites, we rate Zanzibar as an ideal destination for travelers seeking a blissful, barefoot-luxury holiday. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on a tropical beach, exploring the cultural attractions of Stone Town, or enjoying the many water sports on offer, this island has something for every traveler.
Zanzibar produces some of the world’s finest spices and is home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus, the Zanzibar servaline genet, and the (possibly extinct) Zanzibar leopard.
Zanzibar is also perfectly combinable with a safari in Tanzania .
Stone Town is the heart and soul of the island and oldest part of Zanzibar City. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it is known for its rich cultural heritage of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European elements. An incredible mashup of winding alleys and old Arabic-style buildings, you can temporarily lose yourself in the town’s magic. Soak up the local culture by sipping a cup of coffee from a local vendor or wander through the streets, discovering unique little spots at every turn.
Palace Museum
Commonly known as the Sultan’s Palace, The Palace Museum is perhaps the most historic building in Stone Town and is a must-see for any traveler. The Palace Museum is located in the waterfront, overlooking the ocean, and was built in the 19th century as a home for the Sultan and his family. After the 1964 revolution, the site was used as a Government building and was renamed as The People’s Palace. Today it serves as a museum that showcases relics of the past Sultan family.
House of Wonders
The House of Wonders is a hugely important and visually stunning historic building in Stone Town. The House of Wonders rises in impressive tiers of slender steel pillars and balconies overlooking the waterfront. Its enormous carved doors are said to be the largest in East Africa, fronted by two bronze cannon with Portuguese inscriptions dating them to the 16th century. It boasts a highly interesting exhibition that offers a brilliant insight into Zanzibari and Swahili culture. The House of Wonders is the grandest and tallest building in all of Stone Town and is found in a prominent location in front of the Forodhani Gardens on the old town’s seafront.
The Old Fort
The oldest building in Stone Town, the Old Fort is located on the seafront, right in front of the famous Forodhani Gardens. Originally built in the 17th century with the purpose of defending the island from attacks from the Portuguese, nowadays the Old Fort is one of Stone Town’s main sights. Visitors can admire the remains of the former fort and amble around the courtyard in the center, where sellers have local produce for sale. An old amphitheater still hosts events and functions in the fort.
Prison Island
A half-hour boat trip from Zanzibar, Prison Island provides a fascinating glimpse into the island’s slightly dark past – this land was once used as a place where slaves were detained and, when slavery was abolished, it functioned as a camp where people with deadly diseases were sent. Fortunately enough, that is all in the past and today the island is a nature reserve for giant tortoises and a place to see the ruins that once functioned as the prison.
Jozani Forest
A vast and scenic spread of green, Jozani is the last indigenous forest left on Zanzibar. Located inland from Chwaka Bay the area often floods, which luckily nurtures a unique swamp forest of many amazing looking trees and ferns. This forest is one of the last remaining sanctuaries in the world of the red Colobus monkey and is also a great place to encounter many indigenous varieties of flora and fauna. The forest is best reached via bus (309 or 310), by chartered taxi, or as part of an organized tour.
Nungwi Beach
Nungwi is a village found on Zanzibar’s North West tip. This is a popular place yet it’s not overrun by tourists, and it’s one of Zanzibar's top beaches as the tide doesn’t head out too far. The aquarium on the north coast of Nungwi near the lighthouse, rears small turtles found on the beach until they are large enough and then released to survive in the sea. The aquarium is a natural pond with seawater that seeps through the cliff at high tide. This is a great destination for those looking to just soak up some sun and dip their toes in the sea but don’t need the luxury of a fancy hotel.
Zanzibar is known for its spice trade, so what better way to immerse yourself in the local culture than learning about its wealthiest and most profitable industry? Travelers can choose from a variety of tours and explore the winding streets with expert tour guides who will inform you of the origins of the industry, as well as teaching guests about the wide variety of spices that Zanzibar produces and trades in.

Although we didn’t end up booking…
Although we didn’t end up booking through Safari.com the service we received was great and they were really helpful.
Trip to Kruger at Mdluli Safari Lodge
I loved working with Anja from safari.com. She put together my itinerary within my price range and was very professional, thorough and empathetic. She followed up with me many times to see if I needed anything throughout my trip and even filled out some forms for me when I was having difficulty. When the lodge I stayed at was not being accommodating in the slightest, she quickly contacted the manager and got them to rearrange their services to meet my needs. I would most certainly use safari.com again due to my wonderful experience working with Anja.

Nicole at Safari.com is AMAZING!!!
I would love to share my experience with Nicole. She has worked tirelessly to help me make my dream vacation a reality. I had no idea how to start planning. Nicole suggested the most wonderful South African resorts and safaris. No matter how many changes I threw her way it was always received with a happy, positive attitude. I live in Hawaii and even though we were on a 12 hour time difference she was always available to answer any questions or concerns. Her expertise, knowledge and patience are unmeasurable. I was plagued with numerous payment issues from my bank in Hawaii. Nicole never wavered from being patience and more importantly positive that we could resolve each issue and get my trip booked. Nicole is a huge asset to Safari.com and I will scream it from the mountains to let everyone know what excellent customer service I have received. Nicole is a ROCKSTAR!!! We are so excited for our upcoming adventure of a lifetime!

Her attention to detail and smooth communication made the planning process effortless. No request was too big or too small, and she handled everything with efficiency. Leigh-Ann exceeded all expectations, making our trip both stress-free and enjoyable. Her exceptional service reflects her professionalism. Very good experience with getting quotes
I didn’t end up booking with safari.com but I did have a great experience with their consultant, Leigh-Ann Croeser. I originally wanted to book a safari at a specific lodge but it was not available for the dates we wanted. She offered suggestions and helped us secure holds on other dates. She worked hard and sent several follow up emails as she was able to hold some dates for available rooms at the original lodge! We did end up booking with another safari tour company as I sent out a few quotes at the same time and that worked out better for us but next time I would definitely consider booking with her again!

Cities and Landmarks
For those wishing to enjoy a little pure downtime, perhaps following an action-packed safari, our Zanzibar itinerary offers the perfect blend of luxury, simplicity and all the idyllic pleasures of beach life.
We have chosen from among Zanzibar’s best beach lodges options which are suitable for either families or those seeking an intimate, sophisticated retreat.
Situated on the east coast of Africa, Zanzibar offers visitors all they could want from a beach destination along with a colorful cultural and historical experience. Surrounded by the warm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar’s history dates back hundreds of years.
Most notable, and still visible in the architectural styling of Stone Town, were periods when the island fell loosely under the stewardship of Oman and Portugal. Due to its location on the spice route from Europe to India, there are, to this day, suggestions of these cultural influences in the local cuisine, with a mouth-watering array of spicy seafood dishes, a specialty.
The Zanzibari beach experience is a far cry from the overdeveloped resort towns familiar to many westerners. The nightlife, for example, is the embodiment of tranquility, with just the sound of rippling wavelets on the shore under the twinkling glow of the Milky Way to keep you entertained. Bliss!
The beaches are uncluttered and it is still possible to walk for miles collecting shells without encountering much in the way of distraction. People love the essentially pristine nature that abounds, both in the verdant tropical vegetation, the diverse birdlife and the rich aquatic diversity found beneath the waves.
We’ve purposefully left your schedule entirely up to your discretion, whether you’d like to while away the hours soaking up the rays with a cocktail in hand, or venture from one exciting activity to the next – is entirely up to you. Just as a day on the beach should be.
- Accommodation options for both families and couples.
- Barefoot luxury with impeccable service and cuisine.
- A wide variety of water-based and cultural activities.
- Experience colorful cultural and historical experience with Magical Africa's Zanzibar tours.
Zanzibar Tours - Family Vacation
OVERNIGHT OPTION 1: Baraza Resort & Spa
Ranking in the top 25 beach hotels worldwide, the Baraza Resort & Spa is the ideal playground for you to unwind in opulent comfort. With styling and décor reminiscent of a time when the island was a sultanate, you will be immersed in a refined ambiance sure to have you feeling like pampered royalty.
The resort is styled as a coastal palace, complete with Arabic architecture, golden adornments and swaying palm trees. Everything, from the hospitality to the cuisine to the 30 luxuriously appointed villas is purposefully guest-centric.
Four restaurants – open at varying times throughout the day – offer a delectable range of dishes appealing to all tastes.
The villas are luxurious, spacious and appointed with numerous amenities, including an entertainment center, mini bar and terrace with a plunge pool. The en-suite bathroom has both a shower and bathtub.
In these surroundings, you are free to indulge in whichever activity appeals to you. Please make further inquiries on arrival. There are an array of cultural experiences, ranging from Swahili lessons to traditional cookery. Excursions to Zanzibar’s historical highlights can also be arranged. The Water Club offers equipment and instruction in various sailing activities, kayaking and paddle-boarding. Beginner and experienced SCUBA divers are catered for at a nearby diving center.
OVERNIGHT OPTION 2: Mnemba Island Lodge
Reached via a short ferry trip, Mnemba Island Lodge is the epitome of a sun-drenched island paradise. The lodge has an impeccable destination for its family-friendly hospitality, understated barefoot luxury, and selection of seaside activities.
The lodge centers around an open-sided thatched structure where drinks and delectable meals are served. The option of in-room dining is also available on request.
Twelve beachside bandas bring chic styling to a rustic backdrop – with each unit spaced for optimal privacy and appreciation of the views. Fashioned primarily of indigenous material, the bandas are furnished with hand-carved pieces which accentuate the island-style ambiance, as the ocean breeze drifts through slatted shutters. The en-suite bathroom with a rainfall shower completes the creature comforts.
Mnemba Island offers you the sensation of being a castaway – except here you’ll have a butler to attend to your every need, from arranging unique dining locations to assisting in planning your daily activities.
The lodge offers complimentary use of kayaks and paddleboards, with snorkeling equipment also available should you wish to dip your head beneath the crystalline waters. The surrounding waters are rich in aquatic life, and you can experience this for yourself by joining either a diving or fishing charter. Or both?
If you’d like something a little more zen, the lodge hosts yoga classes and qualified massage therapists are on hand to work out any kinks, in the unlikely event that any still exist.
For a little cultural immersion, join one of the various excursions on nearby Zanzibar island. With topics as diverse as the island’s spice heritage, unique architecture and natural history, you’ll find something bound to appeal to your intellectual appetite. Please note that modest clothing is required in Zanzibar out of respect for local customs.

Zanzibar Honeymoon Vacation
OVERNIGHT OPTION 1: Zuri Zanzibar
Zuri Zanzibar is a labor of love, a place where the owner’s passion and dedication to creating a resort that will leave an impression on guests well beyond their departure are self-evident. Zuri means beautiful in the Swahili language – a name that is truly befitting this magnificent beachside property which incorporates nature’s inherent soothing effect to maximize your sense of relaxation.
Throughout the property, guests experience all the appeal of a tropical getaway, from the lush gardens to the tranquil public areas and the spacious, private bungalows. The bespoke decor reflects the surroundings, with indigenous materials extensively used in construction.
This attention to detail extends to exemplary hospitality, and there is an abundance of choice when it comes to deciding where to enjoy your next meal or colorful cocktail. From in-room to fine dining, Zuri’s menu is a tantalizing selection of Afro-Indian-inspired delight.
The accommodation is only a short walk from the water’s edge, with the bungalows boasting garden and/or sea views. Designed with a natural flow from indoors to out, they are furnished with a contemporary elegance that includes artisanal designs. You will love the hammocks strung on the private verandas and the en-suite bathroom with an outdoor shower. Eco-friendly climate control and wi-fi make your bungalow a tempting retreat in the heat of the day.
Zuri offers guests a complimentary daily wellness treatment, along with inclusive use of the beach and watersports facilities. If you can be tempted from your sun lounger, you can attend to your wellness needs at the spa and fitness center.
The Wimbi watersports center will equip you with everything from a mask and snorkel, a bat and ball, to a standup paddleboard, to ensure you are able to get the most out of your time on the beach. The resort also offers various SCUBA, fishing, and sailing charters, about which you can make further inquiries at the resort.
From a cultural perspective, various tours are on offer, which introduce you to the fascinating historical, traditional, and natural highlights of the island.
OVERNIGHT OPTION 2: Kilindi Zanzibar
Originally conceived as a retreat for a Swedish pop star, Kilindi Resort showcases an effortless blend of bold Arabic-inspired architecture with Scandinavian minimalism. With a back-to-nature ethos, you will feel instantly at ease in surroundings that ooze tranquility, and service so refined it’s almost intuitive.
Spread over 50 acres of tropical gardens, the lodge is composed of numerous pavilions, of which the central one serves as the social hub where guests meet for drinks, to cool off in the swimming pool, and to enjoy wholesome meals packed with nutritious flavor. In a quiet corner of the garden, the Kilindi Spa offers a wide range of wellness and beauty treatments.
The Pavilion Suite accommodation seems lifted from the pages of a tropical romance novel. Cool breezes sweep in over the private veranda and plunge pool, cooling the interior. Decorated with an interesting fusion of the subdued and the ornate, the temptation to enjoy a late lie-in is easily forgiven. With butler service and a host of amenities, your comfort and bliss are assured.
Kilindi encourages guests to adhere to whatever schedule, or lack thereof takes their fancy. The staff are on hand to ensure your stay is hassle-free and memorable. From getting stuck into that long-delayed novel to exploring undersea reefs, the only limitation to your fulfillment is the imagination.
As with the other resorts mentioned, a host of activities – both water-based and cultural – are available, both inclusive and as add-ons. Please make further inquiries on arrival.

Learn more about Zanzibar
Culture and customs.
The Zanzibar archipelago is an eclectic melting pot of cultures, customs, and religions. Within the streets of Stone Town, you’ll find mosques and churches standing literally side by side. While Zanzibar is a primarily Muslim region, it shares a history of cultural influences that spread as far wide as the Middle East, India , and ancient Persia. Previously a protectorate of Britain and officially a part of Tanzania since 1964, the archipelago has a long history of bureaucratic changes and tensions.
Currently, the population of Zanzibar is largely divided. Many still champion for independence from Tanzania and seek to have Zanzibar declared its own country. Despite their political differences, the discussion remains respectful between the locals. You are just as likely to see them passionately debating politics in town centers as you are to see tropical fruit farmers hawking their produce roadside all around the islands. But one thing everyone in Zanzibar has in common is their love of soccer. Head to any beach in the late afternoon and you are almost guaranteed to witness the locals coming together for a friendly game of beach soccer.
Eating and drinking
The variety of food in Zanzibar rivals anywhere in the world. It owes this entirely to its geography: being at the crossroads of ancient trade routes, the locals have picked up a thing or two about worldly cuisines. Whether it is yam and plantain-based dishes from the Bantu peoples of Eastern Africa, Indian inspired masala curries featuring many of the spices the island is famous for, or the sweet date and hazelnut bread is traditionally eaten to celebrate the end of Ramadan – you will be spoiled for choices to fill your plate! Unsurprisingly for an island, seafood takes pride of place in Zanzibar and seafood lovers will rejoice at the wide range of dishes available at restaurants and markets. An absolute must for anyone visiting Stone Town is the Forodhani night market. As soon as the sun sets each night, beachside Forodhani Park transforms into an open-air food market filled will vendors tempting you to try their dishes. Our pick is the Zanzibar pizza – filled with whatever fresh ingredients take your fancy at the time. Wash it all down with fresh coconut juice (direct from the coconut of course!)
Perhaps the most famous export from Zanzibar is its spices, including pepper, cinnamon and ginger to name a few. Visit a spice plantation to sample countless types of spices directly from the source. Don’t forget to pick up a selection from the local markets before you leave.
Zanzibar has a large Muslim population, so bear in mind that Ramadan is the fasting month for all Muslims. During this month, no food, drink or smoking is permitted during daylight hours. While non-Muslims aren't expected to fast, it's recommended to try to avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours.
Must-try foods in Zanzibar:
1. pweza wa nazi.
Octopus boiled in coconut milk to create a curry-based dish with cinnamon, cardamom, garlic and lime juice.
2. Barbecued lobster
Enjoy a lobster grilled to perfection at one of the many beachside eateries around the island.
3. Spice cake
A typical local dessert made using pastry with a mix of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and chocolate.
Geography and Environment
Zanzibar is an island province of Tanzania located off the coast of East Africa. Surrounded by the Indian Ocean on all fronts, it is covered mostly in lush rainforest and encircled by white beaches and coral reefs.
Zanzibar is actually an archipelago made up of many small islands and two prominent, main ones: Pemba Island and Unguja Island – the largest, often mistaken as ‘Zanzibar Island’, where the majority of the province’s population lives.
While there are various swanky stores in main hubs like Stone Town, specializing inexpensive trinkets and homewares, you simply can’t visit Zanzibar and not take an afternoon stroll through one of its lively, colorful markets. Lose yourself amongst the hustle of Darajini market in Stone Town, where you will find stores piled high with spices, vegetables, fabrics and dried snacks. The market is so jam-packed, stores often spill out into the tiny laneways nearby.
Things to buy in Zanzibar
Don’t leave the island without purchasing a selection of the many spices still grown on plantations today. Pepper, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg are among the islands’ specialties. But you can find almost every type of spice imaginable here!
2. Woven handicrafts
Pick up a handmade ukili bag, placemat, rug or even a sun hat. The locals have perfected this handicraft and are widely available throughout Zanzibar. A great way to support local initiatives and talent.
Festivals and events
Festival of the dhow countries .
The highlight of the Zanzibar International Film Festival, the Festival of the Dhow Countries is a cultural celebration of international film, music, theatre, and performing arts. One of the biggest annual cultural festivals in Africa, it takes place over the first two weeks of July. Film screenings, exhibitions, and craft classes are on offer during the day, while at night beach parties are a fun way to interact with locals.
Sauti Za Busara Festival
If you are lucky enough to visit Stone Town in early February, you’ll be treated to a hypnotising swell of Swahili music and dance during this vibrant celebration of East African culture. The festival concludes with a beachside festival of crafts, cuisine and entertainment.

Beautiful beaches, tropical waters and exceptional diving
This group of islands off the coast of Tanzania , paired with their Arabian history, make for an excellent safari add-on, or the perfect romantic getaway with someone special. With intriguing architecture evident in the main town, Stone Town, you will be able to experience a mix of culture and landscape with pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. From the traditionally garbed Maasai striding across the beach and Swahili and Indian traders in their own striking traditional dress, the blend of cultures here is enchanting.
On the western side of the island, Stone Town was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2000 and once you lay eyes on its faded grandeur, you’ll understand why. The visible lines and layers of the many cultures and centuries are etched into the profile of this port town, once the Indian Ocean’s most important trading post. The heady scent of spices in its bustling labyrinth of streets make it an incredibly intoxicating place.
Located 80km to the North East of Zanzibar Island, Pemba Island, offers you unspoiled nature, dense forests, green valleys and white sandy beaches. Beautiful corals and rich marine life make for excellent scuba diving along mangrove-knotted shores. It’s also the world’s main exporter of cloves.
Lying just south of Zanzibar, the beach and ocean wonderland of Mafia Island is an adventurous destination. It boasts stunning beaches, sublime marine wildlife and the exclusive feeling of complete seclusion. The island is surrounded by a barrier reef teeming with sea life and almost half of its coastline has been designated as protected marine park.
With its palm-fringed beaches and brilliant blue waters, Fanjove Island is home to incredible wildlife both on land and in the water. Look out for dolphins, humpback whales and green turtles. While away the days soaking up the sun on the beach, or do a spot birdwatching, when you’re not out on the water.

Introduction to the Zanzibar Travel Guide
Welcome to the exotic Zanzibar Archipelago, a tropical paradise nestled in the Indian Ocean off the coast of East Africa. Mallerby’s Luxury Travel is thrilled to present this comprehensive Zanzibar Travel Guide, offering you insights into the enchanting islands and captivating atolls that make this a dream destination for discerning travellers seeking a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Table of Contents
Position & Geography
The Zanzibar Archipelago is nestled just a short distance from the Tanzanian mainland. Geographically, it lies between the latitudes of 5 and 7 degrees south of the Equator, ensuring a warm tropical climate year-round.
Islands and Atolls
The Zanzibar Archipelago consists of two main islands: Unguja (also known as Zanzibar Island) and Pemba, as well as several smaller islets and atolls, such as Mafia Island and Mnemba Island which add to its allure. Known for its scenic beauty, exquisite white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life, Zanzibar also boasts a rich history and showcases a unique blend of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences. A variety of activities offers a dream-like escape for all types of travellers, whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, a fun-filled family vacation or a digital detox, whilst the island’s theme of laid-back living gently coaxes you to slow down and enjoy each moment as it comes. Join us as we delve deeper into the islands through this Zanzibar Travel Guide.
Travel Guide to Zanzibar Island
Zanzibar Island, also known as Unguja, is the largest and most famous island in the archipelago and is a mesmerizing tapestry of culture and history. This enchanting island has incredible natural beauty, offers a plethora of activities to suit all travellers, wonderful warm hospitality and is the epitome of laid-back island living. The capital, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where narrow alleys lead to old Arabic-style buildings and bustling markets. Relax on the idyllic white-sand beaches or immerse yourself in the spice-scented plantations that earned Zanzibar the title of the “Spice Island.” For ease of reference, we’ve divided Zanzibar Island into two focus areas, namely Stone Town and the Coast, in order to offer you the best travel advice on offer on this island.
About Stone Town & Things to Do:
Stone Town is the oldest and one of the most beautiful parts of the island. Imagine cobbled streets and meandering alleyways where you’ll find intricately carved doors, historic buildings and bustling markets, allowing you to immerse yourself in the cultural tapestry of this iconic town. We recommend that you spend at least a night or two here if your time allows.
Our preference for you is a full day in Stone Town with a guide. You’ll walk through the slave markets, the Palace of the Sultans, the Anglican Cathedral and the Old Arabic Fort, learning about Zanzibar’s fascinating history along the way, and then as the sun sets, you’ll enjoy sundowners at a local spot before sampling the local cuisine as you wander from venue to venue for your starter, main and dessert.
We also recommend experiencing the following:
- The Forodhani Night Market for a culinary adventure of local street food.
- The Tea House for an evening of deliciousness, but bookings are essential.
- A guided Spice Tour – it’s the Spice Island after all and still one of the largest spice producers today. Head out with you guide to explore a community supported spice farm where you’ll learn about the spices and their medicinal uses, as well as try some spiced tea and taste the fruits in season.
- Prison Island. This tiny island, just off the coast, was once a prison for rebellious slaves but today is inhabited by giant tortoises. A half-day guided tour includes the 30-minute boat transfer from Stone Town, return.
- The Zanzibar Butterfly Centre which has the largest butterfly enclose in East Africa.
- The Jozani Forest where a guided walk takes you along forest trails in search of the different species of monkey.
- The Seaweed Centre where you’ll learn about the harvesting and processing of seaweed, plus the opportunity to buy wonderful beauty products like organic soaps and essential oils.
Our favourite authentic accommodations in Stone Town are Upendo House and Kisiwa House.
About Zanzibar Island’s Coast & Things to do:
Beyond Stone Town lies the pristine coastline of Zanzibar, the perfect setting for a fabulous beach vacation, whether you prefer to laze on the white sandy beaches, take a dip in the crystal-clear waters and turquoise lagoons, or dive the colourful reefs. There are luxurious accommodations dotted along the coastline to suit all types of travellers, whether you’re looking for a private villa, a family-friendly resort, a romantic getaway or even a destination wedding venue, and Mallerby’s Luxury Travel will assist you in finding the most perfect place to suit all your needs. Activities range from some of Africa’s best snorkelling and diving experiences to dhow sailing, deep-sea fishing and dolphin safaris, to culinary classes, wellness treatments, romantic dinners on the beach, horse riding and immersive conservation projects.
Important to note is that the Zanzibar Island experiences two low and two high tides per day, with 6 hours between the low and high tides. The northern coast of Zanzibar Island experiences the least tidal effect on the coastline, so staying in the northern areas is best for perfect beach conditions. The north coast also offers a vibrant nightlife and exquisite sunsets, whilst the east coast is quieter and more tidal but has excellent conditions for kiteboarding.
Our favourite accommodations are Zuri Zanzibar, Xanadu Villas and Safira Blu Luxury Resort and Villas.
Zanzibar Travel Guide to the Islets within the Archipelago:
Lying off the coast of Zanzibar Island are several smaller islands, islets and atolls scattered around the Zanzibar Archipelago, each one perfect for those seeking a quieter and more secluded experience.
Accommodations range from exclusive sole-use islands to luxury private resorts on an island. Below is a travel guide to our favourite islands within the Zanzibar Archipelago:
Mnemba Island:
Located just off the north-east coast of Zanzibar Island, this tiny island is just 1.5kilometres wide and synonymous with luxury and exclusivity. With only 12 luxuriously rustic palm-frond bandas peeping out onto the white coral sand beach from the dappled shade of the casuarina pine forest, the island is only inhabited by its 24 guests and the staff taking care of them. Reached only by boat from Zanzibar Island, you’ll experience butler service, private dining on the beach under the stars, yoga, wellness treatments and a variety of water activities from snorkelling off the beach to scuba diving courses. Highlights include the Green Turtle nesting and hatching in season, community visits, conservation initiative projects, dolphin boat trip and sunset dhow cruise.
Pemba Island:
To the north of Zanzibar Island, Pemba Island is a lesser-explored gem and just a short, scheduled flight from Zanzibar. This pristine island of great beauty and fertility, has forests, swamps, mangroves, hidden beaches and lagoons, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and diving aficionados. Still the predominant global producer of cloves, Pemba Island has been designated an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International and is also home to several dive sites with steep drop-offs, untouched coral and abundant marine life. Pemba Island offers an authentic experience for those looking for serenity and close encounters with nature.
Our favourite accommodation on the island is The Manta Resort. Set on the northern tip of Pemba Island, Manta is a luxurious retreat featuring 13 villas and suites, suitable for couples and families, some with a private pool and others with a private garden. A highlight is the Underwater Room – a floating structure showcasing a lounge and sundeck with an underwater bedroom where you overnight underwater! Activities range from snorkelling and diving to sunset Ngalawa cruises to spa treatments on the beach. Explore the island on a visit to a Spice Farm, walk through the Ngezi Rainforest or stroll along the beach to the lighthouse. A signature activity, the Pemba Coral Reef Safari, is an exclusive diving experience that promises to take you on an immersive, guided journey through the Pemba Coral Reef ecosystem.
Mafia Island:
To the south of Zanzibar lies a small archipelago of islands, of which Mafia Island is the largest. Known to be one of the best diving and snorkelling destinations in the world with incredible coral reefs, tropical fish and sea turtles.
Thanda Island is part of the archipelago and is a short helicopter flight north of Mafia Island. A mere 5.5 hectares in size, Thanda Island is offered on a sole-use basis for a maximum of 18 guests, offering a luxurious paradise to enjoy in complete privacy with family and friends. Situated in a private marine reserve, guests can dive the exquisite reefs, swim with whale sharks, watch sea turtles nesting in season, sail in a traditional Arab dhow, savour a Swahili or Arabian feast, indulge in a massage or just rest and rejuvenate in a copper bath on the beach.
Fanjove Island:
South of the Mafia Archipelago is the Songo Songo Archipelago which is composed of 22 reefs and 4 islands. Fanjove Island is a secluded and exclusive tropical island, reached by a 50-minute scheduled flight from Dar es Salaam via Mafia Island to Songo Songo Airport, where a 45-minute transfer in a traditional dhow sailboat gets you to the shores of Fanjove Island. This tiny island, covering about 1 kilometre in length and 400 metres in width, accommodates a maximum of 20 people and is yours to explore and enjoy. Surrounded by azure blue seas with white sandy beaches that are shaded with coconut palm trees, step off your beach villa deck, toes in the sand and wade right into the lovely tepid waters. Swim and snorkel straight off the beach, SUP or kayak, set sail on a dhow cruise, savour a beach picnic on a sandbank or explore the pristine 11-kilometre coral house reef snorkelling or diving.
Getting & Around the Zanzibar Archipelago:
The main entry point to the Zanzibar Archipelago is Zanzibar International Airport and several major airlines operate regular flights from various cities around the globe. If on safari, scheduled light aircraft flights connect to Zanzibar from Dar es Salaam and Arusha. Transportation from the airport to your chosen island destination may be via private road transfers, scheduled flights, helicopters or boat transfers, and Mallerby’s will arrange this for you as part of your itinerary.
The Best Time To Visit the Zanzibar Archipelago:
Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate throughout the year, with warm temperatures and high humidity. The best time to visit is during the long, dry season which extends from June to October, and the short, dry season which generally starts mid-December through to the end of February. Avoid the long rains from March until the end of May. The short rains during November and December are lighter and more like afternoon thundershowers.

Travel Advice When Planning Your Trip to the Zanzibar Archipelago:
When considering travel to the Zanzibar Archipelago, it’s essential to plan carefully to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and memorable experience. Here are some travel advice and tips to bear in mind when you are ready to start planning:
- Check the latest travel advisories issued by your government regarding travel to Zanzibar and stay informed about any safety or health-related concerns in the region.
- Visas depend on your country of origin – some nationalities require visas in advance whilst some may be eligible on arrival.
- Make sure your passports are valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
- Comprehensive travel and medical insurance are essential and should cover, but not be limited to, medical emergencies, trip cancellations, luggage and personal belongings, activities you plan to participate in such as diving and water sports, and any other unforeseen events.
- Consult your local travel clinic well in advance to receive recommended vaccinations and take necessary health precautions.
- The local currency in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). While some places may accept major foreign currencies, it’s best to exchange money on arrival or withdraw cash from the ATM’s. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants, but smaller establishments may prefer cash, as do local stores and markets.
- Tipping is widely appreciated as the industry relies heavily on tourism.
- When buying at the markets, bartering is acceptable, but be friendly and fair.
- The locals make wonderful gifts and souvenirs, anything from the local spices and essential oils to clothes and jewellery, so keep space in your luggage for special mementos for yourself, friends, and family.
- When packing, lightweight, breathable clothing is suitable for the tropical climate, along with essential items such as sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a hat, and sunglasses.
- Please respect the local culture. Zanzibar is a predominantly Muslim region, so it’s important to dress modestly. Women are asked to cover their knees and shoulders when in public, and skimpy beachwear is frowned upon, as is public displays of affection.
- Whilst the people of Zanzibar are wonderfully friendly, please ask their permission before taking photographs.
- Swahili is the local language; however, English is widely spoken. The locals are very friendly, so try to learn a few Swahili phrases prior to your journey. ‘Jambo’ is an easy one and it means ‘hello’.
- Zanzibar is generally safe for tourists, but like any destination, exercise caution. Avoid displaying expensive items, be aware of your surroundings, and don’t walk alone in poorly lit areas at night.
- When swimming, pay attention to local advice regarding the ocean currents as some areas may have strong currents or tides. Lifeguards always know best.
- Zanzibar’s delicate ecosystem is home to diverse marine life, so when snorkelling or diving, avoid touching or damaging coral reefs and marine creatures.
- Zanzibar’s cuisine is as varied as it is delicious, so tantalise your tastebuds by sampling as much as you can!
- And lastly, but most importantly, Zanzibar works on ‘Island Time’. Life is slow, laid back and there’s no rush… so whatever you’ve ordered, prepare to wait, but it will be worth it!
Extending your trip from the Zanzibar Archipelago:
Adding a luxury safari experience to your Zanzibar beach escape is a fantastic way to experience the diverse beauty of Africa, so our below Travel Guide to extending your trip to the Zanzibar Archipelago offers some of the best options to consider. Each country offers a unique safari experience and combining it with a relaxing beach vacation in Zanzibar will create a well-rounded and unforgettable African adventure.
We recommend at least 4 nights on Safari and 4 nights on the beach, however more time allows you to explore further areas to truly experience the best of both worlds.
Since Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, it makes for a seamless combination with a safari on mainland Tanzania. The country boasts world-renowned safari destinations like the Serengeti National Park which hosts the famous annual Wildebeest Migration ; the Ngorongoro Crater, once a gigantic volcano and now home to a diversity of wildlife; Tarangire National Park, well known for its huge herds of elephants; and the southern parks of Tanzania which offer exceptional walking safaris, fishing and wildlife viewing. Each area is unique, well-worth a visit and your itinerary can be designed to seamlessly fly between each destination of choice, ending in Zanzibar.

Bordering Tanzania to the North, Kenya offers remarkable wildlife viewing experiences. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is famous for its abundant wildlife and the annual wildebeest migration; the Laikipia region is a collection of private reserves and conservancies teeming with wildlife and offering a range of activities from walking safaris to camel riding and conservation initiatives; the Amboseli region is well known for its large herds of elephants, horse riding and walking safaris, with Mount Kilimanjaro as its backdrop. Direct flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Zanzibar will connect you from your safari to the beach in a matter of hours.

Southern Africa:
Should you choose to safari in South Africa or any of its neighbouring countries, a direct flight from South Africa’s Johannesburg International Airport will connect you to Zanzibar on certain days, within a matter of hours.
South Africa is home to the world-famous Kruger National Park, as well as the malaria-free Madikwe National Park and Eastern Cape conservancies, all offering a fantastic Big 5 wildlife experience.
Botswana is home to the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most unique safari destinations offering both land and water-based game viewing opportunities.
Zambia and Zimbabwe are neighbouring countries which both offer incredible wildlife viewing as well as access to the iconic Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most impressive natural wonders.
Each of these countries offers its own distinct safari experiences, so whether you opt for the vast savannahs of Tanzania or the unique waterways of Botswana, combining a safari with a Zanzibar beach escape will create an unforgettable African adventure.

14 Unmissable Places to See in Zanzibar, Tanzania
Are you planning a trip to Zanzibar but don’t know where to go?
Don’t worry – I’ve got you covered!
In this blog post, I’ll guide you through the best and most beautiful places to see in Zanzibar , from the dazzling white-sand beaches of Nungwi to the historic charm of Stone Town.
Explore the vibrant spice farms , dive into the crystal-clear waters of Mnemba Atoll , and soak in the breathtaking sunsets at Michamvi Kae .
Zanzibar is a treasure trove of unique experiences, whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion .
With so many incredible spots across the island, I recommend taking a round trip. It’s the perfect way to experience the full diversity of this magical island .
But before you start planning your detailed itinerary, let’s explore the must-see places in Zanzibar that you absolutely shouldn’t miss!
(This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a certain percentage of a sale if you purchase after clicking.)
1. Stone Town
Get lost in the narrow streets of Stone Town (or better not – I suggest you join a guided tour when you visit for the first time 🙂) and soak in the vibrant vibes of many different cultures .
Being the old part of Zanzibar city , the capital of Zanzibar, you can feel the mix of Swahili, Indian, Arabic, and European influences. Beautiful wooden doors will catch your eye as you stroll through the city and you won’t get bored, as there are many things to do in Stone Town .
One of the most famous spots is Darajani Market , where you can stock up on delicious spices, handmade soaps, and locally sourced coffee . Moreover, make sure to explore the Old Fort and visit the historic site of the old slave market , now home to the Anglican Cathedral.
Did you know that Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar ? You can visit his birthplace, now a museum, and learn all about this legendary musician.
For lunch, head to the popular Lukmaan Restaurant , where you can savor authentic Swahili dishes at an affordable price. In the evening, don’t miss the mouthwatering street food at Forodhani Park , a must-visit for food lovers.
Stone Town also serves as a great base for day trips and tours . For example, you can join a combined tour to Prison Island and the stunning Nakupenda sandbank , or explore Chumbe Island.
Another must-do is a visit to one of the many spice farms surrounding the city, where you can learn about Zanzibar’s rich spice heritage.
Check out: 14 Best Things to do in Stone Town, Zanzibar
2. Spice Farms
As Zanzibar is the spice island par excellence , you should definitely not miss out on visiting a spice farm.
You will find most of these farms around Stone Town in particular but there is also a small but excellent one next to Jozani Forest , making it perfect to combine both.
You can book a spice tour in your hotel or choose one of the many tour operators in Stone Town. A taxi will pick you up from your accommodation and together with your guide, you will make your way to the farm.
Once there, your guide will show you around and explain all the different plants and trees .
You’ll get to see and smell spices like clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric, vanilla, cardamom, chili, and black pepper; herbs such as lemongrass and tropical fruits such as coconut, papaya, jackfruit, cassava, and pineapple.
I was totally blown away to see how cloves grow!
It’s just so interesting to see how the spices we use in everyday life are grown and harvested . Many tours also include a typical Swahili lunch at the farm, where you get to see and taste how the locals use these spices in their cuisine.
As a goodbye gift, you will also receive crowns, bags, or other creations woven from palm leaves .
3. Nakupenda Beach
Nakupenda Beach is a sandbank in the middle of the Indian Ocean, located 8 km or a 30-minute boat ride from Stone Town.
The word Nakupenda means “I love you” in Swahili and is quite fitting given the dreamlike and thoroughly romantic backdrop once you are there. To get to this stunning sandbank, you need to hire a boat but don’t worry, there are a lot of tour operators in Stone Town.
And if you’re wondering what you can do on a sandbank, I can assure you that you won’t get bored, because there are quite a few things to do.
First, you can just take a walk, admire your surroundings, and take some nice pictures. It’s hard to say how big the sandbank is, as the size varies due to the tides .
For enjoying the kitschy turquoise blue water you can go swimming or snorkeling . If you are hungry afterward you don’t have to starve, because when you book a tour, a picnic on the sandbank is usually included.
A chef will accompany you and your tour guide and prepare some delicacies on the Nakupenda sandbank. After lunch, you can do some shopping at the local vendors and purchase dresses, bracelets, soaps, etc. or you can treat yourself to a relaxing massage .
Tours you might find interesting :
4. & 5. Nungwi & Kendwa
Another one of the best places to see is Nungwi. This place is located at the northern tip of the island and attracts visitors with its beautiful white beaches and turquoise ocean , which is particularly beautiful there.
Nungwi is divided into two parts – Nungwi East and Nungwi West. Nungwi East is more touristy, as there are more hotels and resorts. But there are also more restaurants, bars, the well-known Nungwi Inn beach , great nightlife and you can watch the sunset there.
The West coast is calmer and you can find a beautiful sandbank there. It is also perfect for taking a sunrise beach walk in the morning.
Nungwi is known for two aquariums, where you can visit sea turtles and even swim with them – the Mnarani Aquarium and the Baraka Natural Aquarium.
The opinions on both differ greatly – I deliberately decided not to visit and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone since the turtles live in captivity after all.
From Nungwi West you can take a 45-minute beach walk to Kendwa (or a motorcycle taxi, called Boda Boda, which will take you there in 6 minutes). Kendwa is also a perfect spot for enjoying the beach and watching the sunset.
Once a month the legendary Fullmoon Party takes place at Kendwa Rocks Beach Resort, which you shouldn’t miss at all!
If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush on your vacation, you can go to the Kendwa Rocks Skydiving Center and jump out of a plane. A snorkeling or diving trip from Nungwi or Kendwa to Mnemba Atoll is also a good option.
6. Mnemba Island
Around 4,5 km northeast of Zanzibar lies Mnemba, a small private island, that is only inhabited by guests and staff from the only big luxury resort that’s there .
As the most expensive property in Zanzibar, Mnemba Island is naturally out of reach for many, and access to the island is strictly limited to hotel guests only.
So what makes Mnemba Island so special for everyone?
The answer is the beautiful coral reef that surrounds the island and therefore makes it a popular scuba diving and snorkeling spot.
With its wide variety of corals, different species of fish, and even occasional sightings of sea turtles and dolphins , it is one of the most beautiful diving sites in all of Africa!
Boats to Mnemba Atoll leave from everywhere on the island, but the shortest boat ride is from Nungwi or Matemwe .
My sister and I did our scuba diving license at Mnemba and believe me when I tell you that the underwater world is truly breathtaking!
If you are not into diving or snorkeling, you can just do a boat trip on a bigger boat and admire the turquoise water while having a light lunch. You might even be lucky enough to see dolphins!

7. Jozani Forest
Fancy hanging out in a forest with some monkeys ? In Jozani Forest , also known as Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, you can do exactly that.
To be more precise, here you can observe the Red Colobus Monkey , a species that can only be found in Zanzibar. Jozani Forest is also the largest indigenous forest on the island.
The forest nature trail will take you around 45 minutes through the national park and you can learn a lot about trees, plants, which are used in local medicine, and other animals living here, such as the elephant shrew or the green mamba (luckily, we didn’t spot any).
There are also over 50 species of butterflies and 40 species of birds .
Finally, you will see the Red Colobus Monkeys roaming in the trees – some of them with their babies! For your and the monkeys’ safety, it is recommended to not go closer than three meters.
Afterward, the tour will continue and you will step into a stunning mangrove forest where you can learn everything about those interesting trees and spot a lot of tiny crabs .

8. & 9. Paje & MAALUM
Paje on the southeast coast of Zanzibar is not only popular among tourists but also among kitesurfers, as it is THE kitesurfing mecca in Zanzibar .
If you don’t want to try this exciting water sport, you can just sit back and sip a coconut in many of the great restaurants and cafés in Paje and watch the colorful gliders over the water.
Paje has a lot to offer in terms of culinary delights, but it doesn’t disappoint when it comes to nightlife either. There’s a party somewhere every day! On Fridays, for example, there are the legendary pool parties at the Hotel Jambo right on the beach.
The tides are very significant in Paje. At low tide, you can visit seaweed plantations and watch the women harvesting seaweed. At high tide swimmers, kite surfers and other water sports enthusiasts can be found in the ocean.
Don’t forget to visit MAALUM, a natural swimming pool in Paje with a spa and restaurant attached. The complex is really beautiful and definitely worth a visit!

10. & 11. Kuza Cave & Swahili Cave
These two caves, located in Jambiani on the southeast coast, are naturally formed sinkholes filled with crystal clear freshwater , making it perfect for a refreshing swim.
Kuza Cave is surrounded by a peaceful nature preserve and if you are lucky, you can even spot some monkeys. After you enjoy cave swimming, you can have a cold Kilimanjaro beer , participate in Swahili cooking classes, watch some African dancing and drumming , or learn about Swahili archaeology.
Swahili Cave is not only perfect for swimming and diving, it also has a spiritual aspect.
Legend has it that a female spirit lives in the cave , giving it a special energy that you can feel when meditating on one of the rocks. In the past, local people came here to pray or to heal from sicknesses.
Beautiful Baobab trees are just above the cave and there is also an area where you can chill and rest after your swim.
It’s hard to say which cave is the most beautiful , so why not visit both and then decide for yourself?
12. Michamvi Kae
Looking for the perfect sunset spot on the southeast coast? You will find it in Michamvi Kae.
This small fishing village , located on the peninsula of Michamvi, has its very own charm. There is nothing better than taking a walk on the beach and admiring how the sun sets gracefully over the ocean .
Another special feature of Michamvi is the mangrove forest . Once completely untouched, the effects of increasing tourism can be seen here already. Before you enter the mangroves, you can find a nice restaurant, which also offers lots of sunbeds .
Right in the mangrove forest, you will find the Mangrove Bar and the Kae Funk Beach Bar. Kae Funk is THE place to party in Michamvi and you can enjoy good music, cocktails, and even an acrobatic show right before the sun sets.
There’s not much to do during the day except relax and unwind. You can also take a boat and go to Uroa on the other side of the bay – also very quiet and relaxing there.

13. The Rock
Only a 10-minute drive from Michamvi Kae to the other side of the Michamvi peninsula lies another one of the best places to see in Zanzibar : The Rock Restaurant.
The special thing about this restaurant is that it is located – you have three guesses – on a rock in the ocean!
At low tide, you can easily walk there, as it is only a few meters away from the beach. But at high tide, you have to take a boat to reach there (of course you can also swim if you are keen).
The Rock offers a unique dining setting where you’ll be treated to local Swahili dishes, seafood as well as Italian cuisine. But don’t expect low prices here!
In my opinion, food and drinks are even a little bit overpriced . Honestly, we had no desire to dine here and only treated ourselves to a cocktail.
Sitting outside on the small terrace and enjoying the panoramic ocean view was still pretty amazing. I mean, when can you say you’ve enjoyed a fancy drink on a rock in the ocean?
14. Mtende Beach
Mtende Beach is located in the south of Zanzibar and I am not lying when I tell you that this is probably the most iconic beach on the island .
Before you get there, you need to drive through the quiet village of Mtende with its red clay houses and banana trees. You will also see a huge Baobab tree there.
Mtende Beach is basically a cove with big rocks and Mikadi trees on top. At low tide, you can go down in the cove , walk around, and admire the beautiful Indian Ocean in the distance.
There are also some natural tide pools, where you can spot small crabs and fish . Make sure you see the two rocks next to each other forming the shape of a heart!
At high tide, it’s perfect for swimming, as the water is directly coming to the stairs that lead to the cove. If you are hungry, you can have a nice seafood or Swahili lunch and refreshing fruit juices at the Usumba Rock restaurant , which is only a short walk along the beach at low tide.
Not far away from Mtende Beach is the Baobab Africa Lodge, where you can have lunch on a platform in the middle of a Baobab tree ! They even allow you to use the pool , which is pretty cool for a quick refreshment.
Final Words
As you can see above, your trip won’t get boring, as there are so many amazing places to see in Zanzibar.
But as well as exploring, don’t forget to come down and enjoy the island’s serenity and pole pole (slowly, slowly) vibes.
Hakuna Matata – there are no worries!
