Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica: Plan Your Visit

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica is the most popular area to hike in the Santa Elena/ Monteverde area.

This protected land consists of several hiking trails, a waterfall, and an impressive suspension bridge that visitors can walk over.

We are a couple that lives in Costa Rica. We love to hike and search for wildlife. So, we have visited Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve several times. We have discovered all the things you should and shouldn’t do while here.

With this comprehensive guide, you will find out everything you need to know about the opening hours, directions, trails, what to wear, and more helpful tips for making your trip a memorable one.

Monteverde Wildlife Reserve at a Glance

Opening Hours:  7:00am until 4:00pm every day

Cost:  $25 for adults | $12 for Students | $12 for Children

Location:  The town of Monteverde in Northern Mountains

Guided Park Tour (without transportation): Reserve Tour with Monteverde Wild

Tour with Transportation from Monteverde : Reserve Walk with Sinwa Tours

Nearby Hotels: Chira Glamping | Camino Verde Bed and Breakfast | Casa Campo Verde

Nearby Restaurants:   Cafe Colibri | Tramonti | Belmar Craft Brewery

Directions to the Reserve

We were a bit confused with the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve directions.

If you use Google Maps and put in “Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve” it provides the correct directions, but it marks the point as the middle of the preserve.

So, we were a bit unsure if we were actually driving the right way.

To avoid confusion, I suggest putting in “Cafe Colibri” as your destination. This cafe is located just before the entrance to the reserve.

To add to our confusion, just before arriving at the reserve there was a large parking lot on the right-hand side of the road that said “Official Monteverde Preserve Parking.”

Typically, this means nothing in Costa Rica. People try to do this all the time at places like Manuel Antonio National Park just to make some money with their parking lot.

So, I told Thomas to keep going. But, he decided to pull in and just ask. Well, it turns out that this large lot is actually an official parking area.

We ended up parking here and there was a shuttle to the main entrance.

Book Your Costa Rica Car Rental and Save 10% Plus Other Perks

The shuttle ride takes about 3 minutes. We paid about $5 to park.

Alternatively, you can drive to the official entrance and parallel park on the road. This is nice because then you don’t need to wait for the shuttle when you are done hiking.

  • Free second driver
  • 0% deductible on Liability Protection Insurance
  • Excellent customer service
  • New fleet of well-maintained vehicles

But, we didn’t wait any more than 7 minutes for the shuttle.

The parking lot was also nice because although I don’t feel like the attendant was really paying too much attention, it at least felt like the car was a bit more secure than it would have been on the side of the road.

However, I just checked out the Google reviews and some people definitely didn’t have such a good experience. There are a lot of reviews saying they waited more than 30 minutes for the shuttle.

Save Yourself the Stress and Book a Guided Tour with Transportation

Maybe if you have the time it is best to drive to the entrance and see if there is space to parallel park on the road. Worst case scenario, you can always drive the few minutes back to the lot.

Opening Hours

The park is open from 7:00am until 4:00pm every day all year round.

If possible, we suggest arriving here at 7:00am or 8:00. That way you can beat the crowds and tours.

Plus, it is often the driest time of day during the rainy season .

Entry Fee to the Reserve

$25 for adults

$12 for Students

$12 for Children

If you are a Costa Rican resident the entry fees are:

$8 for adults

$6 for students

$6 for children

It is possible to pre-purchase your tickets online on the official Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve website .

But, I would suggest just buying them in person on the day of. That way if your plans change you will have more flexibility.

We were there at one of the busiest times of the year and only had one couple in front of us in line.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Costa Rica Tours

Visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve with an experienced guide is a great way to ensure you will see a lot of wildlife, learn all about the flora and fauna, and probably learn some more history of the area as well.

There are three guided tours that we suggest. Each one is a little bit different, so let’s go through all your options.

Cloud Forest Reserve Morning Walk without Transportation

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars on Viator | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   2 to 3 hours | ✅  Book it!

If you are looking for a guide, we suggest a tour with the company Monteverde Wild. Their guide will meet you at the entrance of the reserve and take you on a two to three-hour-long hike.

Just note that the cost of this tour is just for the guide per person. You will need to purchase admission tickets separately on arrival. Also, this tour does not include transportation.

Walk in Monteverde Cloud Forest with Transportation

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars on Viator | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   3 hours | ✅  Book it!

On this tour, an expert naturalist guide will lead the way through the park. The guides are super knowledgeable about flora, fauna, history, and more!

We love this tour because they provide round-trip transportation from hotels near Santa Elena and Monteverde.

National Park fees, bottled water, and the expertise of a professional guide are all included as well.

Check Prices and Availability! 🌿

Monteverde Cloud Forest + Curi-Cancha Reserve + Night Hike (Private)

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars on Viator | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   6 – 8 hours | ✅  Book it!

This tour includes hassle-free round-trip transfers from selected area hotels. This is an intimate nature experience exclusively for your group.

On this tour you will experience:

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve : Begin your day in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Engage in a morning exploration of one of Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystems, surrounded by lush vegetation often enveloped in clouds.

Curi Cancha Reserve : After lunch, journey to the Curi-Cancha Reserve. Wander through a mix of secondary and primary forests, experiencing a transition zone that’s perfect for birdwatching. From hummingbirds and toucans to trogons and colorful tanagers, it’s a birder’s paradise.

Monteverde Wildlife Refuge Night Hike : Cap off the day with a night hike. From amphibians and reptiles to nocturnal mammals like sloths, armadillos, and even wildcats, it’s a unique adventure you wouldn’t want to miss. Telescopes and flashlights are provided for an enhanced experience.

🌳 Check Prices and Availability for this Private Tour!

At the entrance, there is an area with bathrooms, potable water stations, a gift shop, and a dining area.

The bathrooms were clean enough and completely fine.

For the potable water, I would suggest trying to only drink bottled water that you have brought with you. I’m sure the water is probably fine, but if you can avoid risking it, I would.

The gift shop area was nice, but most of the things they had you can also buy at the gift shops in downtown Monteverde if you prefer.

If you are looking for something to eat, the dining hall had a sign saying that they served Costa Rican breakfast, paninis, pizza, coffee etc.

In my opinion, there are better options nearby, which I get to in the “what to do Nearby” section of this article.

The Cloud Forest Hiking Trails

There are several hiking trails here. This is great because you can make your stay as long or short as you want.

When Thomas and I visited we hiked almost all of the trails so we could get the full experience. If your time is short, I suggest hiking:

map of monteverde cloud forest reserve

Sendero Nuboso A to Sendero Camino. Head east on Sendero Camino until you get to Sendero El Puente. Head west on Sendero El Puente back towards the entrance.

This is the trail with the hanging suspension bridge. After the bridge you can follow Sendero Camino or Sendero Wilford Guindon back to the parking lot.

For a longer hike, a good route is:

Sendero Nuboso A to Sendero Nuboso B to Sendero La Ventana. Here you can enjoy a nice view of the forest canopy.

From there, head west on Sendero Camino until you get to Sendero El Puente. Head west on Sendero El Puente back towards the entrance. This is the trail with the hanging suspension bridge.

After the hanging bridge , follow Sendero Wilford Guindon to Sendero Tosi to Sendero Cuecha. This will take you to the waterfall.

We didn’t find the waterfall to be very impressive, but we were there in the dry season . I bet during the rainy season there is a lot more water.

From there, take the trail back to the parking lot.

monteverde cloud forest biological preserve

What to Bring and Wear

During the rainy season you will likely get soaked here and the trails might be muddy.

A full water bottle

Waterproof backpack (this is a must-have for all of Costa Rica during rainy season)

Change of clothes

During the dry season what you will want to wear will probably vary to the rainy season.

In the dry season it tends to be windy here, but you most likely won’t have any rain. I suggest long pants or shorts, hiking boots, and a t-shirt with a long sleeve layer on top.

Do You Have Travel Insurance?

Don’t let unexpected medical expenses or trip interruptions overshadow your dream Costa Rican vacation.

Secure your worry-free Costa Rican adventure with Heymondo travel insurance

In rainy season you will want:

Rain jacket, waterproof pants, lots of layers, hiking boots.

Often you might start your hike being cold and by the end be really warm.

Background Information on the Reserve

I think that the whole history of Monteverde is really interesting.

A group of Quakers from the United States moved to this area in 1951. They consisted of 11 families from Alabama. Apparently, as pacifists, they were trying to avoid the Korean War draft.

They settled in Costa Rica because the country had just abolished its military.

To make a living, they started producing cheese and milk which eventually began being sold all over the country.

It is still possible to buy Monteverde cheese and while in the area we definitely suggest visiting the Monteverde Cheese factory. You can no longer tour it, but at least stop in and get some ice cream or cheese.

Anyway, the Quakers knew that this area was special and with the help of several biologists and conservationists throughout the years, the protected area was eventually established in 1972.

The reserve consists of over 26,000 acres which contains  6 ecological zones.

The Monteverde reserve is home to:

– Over 2,500 plant species (including more species of orchid in a single area than anywhere else in the world)

– Over 100 species of mammals

– Over 400 species of birds

– 120 reptilian and amphibian species

Wildlife in the Reserve

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve in Costa Rica is home to a wide array of wildlife species.

Some of the notable animals found in the preserve include:

the resplendent quetzal

various species of hummingbirds

What is a Cloud Forest?

A cloud forest is a unique type of tropical or subtropical forest.

It can be characterized by persistent low-level cloud coverage and distinguished by its high levels of humidity.

It is normal here to have abundant epiphytes (plants growing on other plants).

Monteverde, Costa Rica, qualifies as a cloud forest due to its high elevation. which places it within the cloud base.

Plus, its high annual precipitation, which contributes to the formation of clouds and mist necessary for the ecosystem’s distinct features.

monteverde cloud forest biological preserve

What to Do After

If you start your day at the reserve around 7am you will likely be done within three to four hours. That means you will have the whole rest of the day to do fun activities.

First off, you might be ready for breakfast or lunch….

Check Out the Cafe

Just next to the entrance to the reserve is a place called “Cafe Colibri” This is a nice place to visit for breakfast, lunch, or even just a drink.

After a rainy hike through the cloud forest, it is always nice to have a coffee or hot chocolate here.

Although the food and drinks here are good, the real draw is the hummingbirds.

They put out hummingbird feeders so you can sit and watch all the different species of hummingbirds fly up for a little meal while you are enjoying your meal.

If you prefer to go somewhere besides Cafe Colibri for lunch, there are plenty of options nearby. We suggest two places which are both basically on your way back into town. These are:

Tramonti : I suggest going here if you are in the mood for Italian. They serve great pizzas. It is also possible to get pasta, meats, seafood etc. The building is really nice. Its a wooden frame encased in glass.

Belmar Craft Brewery : This restaurant is located on the Hotel Belmar property. It is located next to a small pond and just a really peaceful vibe. We like to go here for a beer and get a few appetizers to share.

Take a Night Tour

One of our favorite things to do in the evening in Monteverde is to take a wildlife night tour. This is a great way to see all the night active animals in the area with an experienced guide.

We have a complete guide to Monteverde night tours .

The best way to experience Costa Rica’s wild side? A walking trail from the Caribbean to the Pacific.

camino verde tours

The scene felt fantastical, straight out of a Disney movie. Three glasswing butterflies perched on a cluster of billy-goat weed. Orchids dotted the dark green forest canopy. Tiny iridescent hummingbirds flashed across the sky like fairies. Finally, in this moment, was the Costa Rica I’d been looking for.

From left: Courtesy of Lirio Lodge; Courtesy of Jen Murphy

Since becoming a poster child for ecotourism in the 1990s, the country has attracted millions of visitors a year, myself among them. But last summer, on what was my sixth visit, I heard more English than Spanish in the surf town of Nosara, and was almost ready to dismiss the country as overtouristed.

Related : The Ultimate Costa Rica Packing List

Hiking the Camino de Costa Rica this year proved me wrong. Managed and promoted by the nonprofit Mar a Mar Association, this 174-mile-long trail stretches across the entire country — from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean — and offers an experience far from the tourist hubs. The 16-stage route spans five separate microclimates, and passes through remote villages, Indigenous land, protected natural areas, and more than 20 towns that up until now have benefited little from conventional tourism. Along the way, trekkers eat and sleep in local homes and family-run lodges.

A walking safari, a culinary tour, and a cultural deep dive rolled into one, the Camino is also physically challenging. While travelers can technically walk it by themselves, it’s wise to hire a guide: the trail is isolated, and there are lots of prickly and poisonous things along the way. I also found it helpful to have someone who could field questions about the mind-boggling flora and fauna.

I began my journey in Barra de Pacuare, a jungly village near the Cariari National Wetlands, a protected mangrove swamp and marine area on the eastern coast. After a breakfast of eggs and gallo pinto, the Costa Rican version of rice and beans, I took a 15-minute boat ride to the remote village of Parismina, so I could symbolically dip my toe in the Caribbean. When I arrived, as if on cue, a troop of white-faced capuchin monkeys started performing acrobatics in the palm trees above me like an official send-off ceremony.

Sixteen days is the suggested time to walk the full trail, but I only had five. UrriTrek, one of several outfitters that run Camino trips, customized an itinerary that included several car transfers, so I could cover more ground. The company also paired me with Juan “Juancho” Chavarria, one of its owners. A bear-size man with a tattoo of a red hummingbird — the route’s mascot — on his forearm, Chavarria has walked the Camino 35 times, possesses encyclopedic knowledge of its biodiversity, and knows its community partners so well that he told me he considers them family.

Chavarria and I hiked back to Barra de Pacuare. It was less than two miles, but in that short span I ticked off half my wildlife wish list: sloths, strawberry poison-dart frogs, howler monkeys, and emerald basilisk lizards. A 20-minute boat ride through thick mangroves delivered us to the village of Goschen; from there, we drove another few miles to the nearest trailhead.

The hike ahead of us was a true adventure, and would take us to Tsiöbata, a village that belongs to the Cabecar people, one of the most isolated Indigenous tribes in the country. After descending downhill through dense jungle for an hour, we reached a roaring river full of rafters. To cross the 400-foot-wide Pacuare River, we had to squeeze into a rickety metal basket while Chavarria pulled a metal towline. “You always have to work for the best parts of the Camino,” he said, wiping sweat from his brow. It was another hour of slogging up a steep muddy hill before we reached Tsiöbata. Leo Martinez, the village’s ecotourism leader, showed us the new museum, and over lunch at the local school, he shared aspirations of hosting craft workshops to bring revenue to the community.

The next day, a guide named Isabel Umaña took over for Chavarria as we traversed the Copal Reserve, a biological corridor connecting Tapantí-Macizo Cerro de la Muerte National Park and La Amistad International Park. After rattling off every species of orchid blooming around us, Umaña pointed out the glasswing butterfly that so transfixed me, then a giant leaf known as a “poor man’s umbrella,” and then the scarlet rump of a male Passerini’s tanager. We hiked out of the wilderness and into the hamlet of Purisil, which, like many of the places we visited, was arranged around a school, church, and soccer field.

Having logged more than 10 miles and some serious elevation, I was ravenous when we reached La Cuchara de Mariana, a humble yet inviting restaurant where the owner, Mariana Céspedes, greeted us with a warm “ Buen camino ” and cold lavender-scented towels. The feast began with soup studded with green plantain, chayote, and sweet potato; then came a whole roasted trout, followed by coconut-milk caramels.

The Camino’s network of impressive restaurants and lodges is the work of Mar a Mar and Conchita Espino, a retired World Bank officer. She and her husband were inspired to carve out the trail after completing the ancient Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. Espino and members of Mar a Mar spent 10 years visiting far-flung villages and recruiting locals to create services that cater to trekkers. The trail, though just five years old, has generated not only revenue but also immense pride.

For the next three days, we hiked through cloud forests and jungles, crossed coffee farms and banana plantations, soaked in natural hot springs. I also ate some of the best food I’d ever had in Costa Rica, including fresh-made blackberry ice cream in a home in the Palo Verde cloud forest, a 1,700-acre private reserve with more than 100 species of birds.

On the final day, we hiked five miles uphill from the hamlet of Naranjillo to get our first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean, then hiked two miles downhill to Esquipulas, a small town in the foothills of the Brunqueña mountain range. We cooled off with a dip in a waterfall and finished with lunch at Esquipulas Rainforest, a glamping retreat and coffee plantation. As we relaxed, a bouquet of hummingbirds began to feed on the flowers of a nearby banana tree. In the past few days I had seen more hummingbirds than humans. It turns out, the Costa Rica of my imagination did exist. It just took a bit more effort to experience it.

Camino Verde

At a glance.

  • One step above hostel
  • Cafe is a comfortable hangout to meet fellow travelers
  • Complimentary/Free Coffee and tea served all day
  • Conveniently located to downtown Santa Elena

Camino Verde's reception and cafe look out over the Nicoya Gulf while the quaint standard rooms' across the street offer simple accommodations at affordable prices. Close to town, but far enough away to avoid the noise and traffic, Camino Verde is walking distance to Monteverde's markets, restaurants, night life and public buses; a good location for those without cars.

Camino Verde's a couple blocks up a dirt road behind downtown Santa Elena. The majority of the hotel's 21 standard rooms are located across the street from the reception building in a two-story hotel. The rooms, $40, vary in size, but most have enough space for one or two twin sized beds, a private bathroom, hot water and a Wi-Fi. The rooms are simple, but well maintained with clean sheets, floors and a place to hang some clothes.

Service & Amenities

The hotel serves breakfast (included in the room rate) in a café connected to the reception. The cafe has big glass windows overlooking the gulf and is made with an assortment of wood, cement and recycled glass bottles that refract the light across the room. A big flat-screen TV plays international news, music videos and anything else the guests ask for. The cafe also offers Wi-Fi, free calls to the US and free coffee and tea all day to hotel guests. The reception desk, part of the cafe, provides maps of the area and its staff gives a short introduction to Monteverde.

Kinkajous Night Walk

Kinkajous Night Walk

  • Duration: 2 Hours (approx.)
  • Product code: PUL8TG

The Kinkajou night tour is a great option to see the forest at night and have a totally different experience than the one explored during the morning.

The trips starts just as it's starts getting dark, giving you the chance to see the difference between day and night, there fore start feeling how temperature drops , how sounds change and how what you see changes in side the secondary forest. Guides are experienced and know where to find trees that sloths love and also caves where tarantulas usually hide. It's 100% safe to walk at night during the forest and it's a great place to also see coatis, kinkajous, walking sticks, leaf cutter and and many other interesting creatures.

A Self-Guided Hike in the Monteverde Cloud Forest

On our first day in Monteverde we headed for the cloud forest. Would we see any animals on our own?

Self-guided hike in the monteverde cloud forest

The Cloud Forest. This was the reason we came to Monteverde. We wanted to see this primary, virginal forest cloaked in clouds. And one of the best places to see it is in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. The namesake reserve for the whole area. But we decided not to sign up for its pricey, crowded tours. Instead we decided to do our own self-guided hike in the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

And we saw plenty without a guide.

camino verde tours

(Now caveat – we did do guided tours for our time in Monteverde, we just didn’t do them at the main Monteverde Reserve. More is coming on our tours with Oscar at the Monteverde Refuge (different form the main Reserve) and Curi Cancha. We personally decided not to do one at the main Monteverde Cloud Forest. So you don’t have to do a tour during your time in the Monteverde area. You can definitely get by on your own.)

For our hike in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, we did a loop in the center of the reserve and hit all of the major stops: Sendero Nuboso, La Ventana (and the Continental Divide), the suspension bridge, and the waterfall.

Map for our self-guided hike in the monteverde cloud forest

Sendero Nuboso

We arrived at the Monteverde Cloud Forest around noon. We definitely did not wake up early on our first day. But we also avoided some of the morning rush since several vans were leaving as we were arriving.

Our hike started off on the Sendero Nuboso trail. I’d read this was a pretty popular trail but for about half of it, we didn’t run into a single person. It was also one of the more beautiful sections of the entire hike.

The entire forest around us was literally draped in clouds.

Everywhere you looked it was green…unless it wasn’t. Vibrants flowers sprung from the foliage, their petals literally dripping from the mist that hung around us.

We even spotted a coati just hanging out on the trail. I rounded a corner and BAM there he was. My feet ground to a halt as I quickly rose my camera to catch a few shots of him before he disappeared into the greenery on the side of the trail. And he did disappear. I quickly ran over to the spot but it was so dense with leaves and plants, I couldn’t see anything.

Unfortunately, our good experience on the trail quickly came to an end. About halfway along the Sendero Nuboso, a group caught up with us. There were about 5 of them and we could hear them a good 100 meters away. They were so incredibly loud. The forest instantly quieted as they approached.

And for the next hour we couldn’t shake them. If we slowed down, they slowed down. If we sped up, they walked faster. They were always within earshot. Which meant they were also within earshot of the animals around us.

Their presence ruined the next part of our trip, but I tried my best to ignore them.

La Ventana and the Continental Divide

Sendero Nuboso ends at the small trail Sendero La Ventana which connects to this viewpoint. On a clear day you can see far to the east and west (even to the Nicoya Peninsula).

But not for us. The tops of the mountains were covered in clouds. The winds were rising, fast, up the eastern side and then descending down to the west. Everything was shrouded in mist and cloud. My hair quickly plastered itself to my face.

And though we couldn’t see anything, it did feel very surreal. Standing there in the middle of a cloud. On the top of the continental divide.

Self-guided hike in the monteverde cloud forest

Suspension Bridge

After we left the viewpoint, we turned for the bridge. The Sendero Camino trail was boring and very wide (almost like a road), but was mostly flat. When we turned for Sendero Roble though things quickly changed.

The first part of this trail is just steps. I felt like every turn we made just led to more steps leading up. This was one tiring climb. I literally felt like I was on the stair-master at the gym. But I powered through and passed the noisy group. I wanted to make sure we hit the bridge first.

And we did!

Coming down off a small rise, I saw the red through the mist in the trees and squealed. We weren’t planning on going to any other park that had the bridges, so this one would be our only one.

Self-guided hike in the monteverde cloud forest

The bridge spans a valley and it was quite high. Smaller trees lingered below us while larger ones, closer to the either end, reached up past the bridge. And then all around us were the canopies of others.

If you want to see the tops of the trees and be in the canopy itself, this is the place to do it.

We spent a lot of time on the bridge spotting birds and just enjoying the gentle sway in the breeze. The mist here was still thick, but every once in awhile, the clouds would part for a moment and sunlight would pierce through to us.

The fact that I have no pictures of said sunlight shows how fleeting these moments were.

Another great part about the bridge? Because we spent so much time there, we finally lost the obnoxious group.

Self-guided hike in the monteverde cloud forest

The Waterfall

After leaving the bridge, we headed towards the waterfall. This isn’t on the map online , but the printed map we received at the entrance had the waterfall marked.

We went on Sendero Wilford Guindon and it was here we quickly realized how lucky we were to lose the loud group. On a quick stop to rest our feet, a family of large brown birds crossed the path not 20 feet in front of us and lazily took their time wandering by.

As we turned on Sendero Tosi, the weather around us began to change. The temperature warmed and the mist disappeared. Sunlight streamed down through the canopy above us. The difference between this side of the park and the Sendero Nuboso was incredible.

Self-guided hike in the monteverde cloud forest

The waterfall in Monteverde Cloud Forest is pretty but also small. If you don’t have the time to hike out this way, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

But the great part of this hike was that it was mostly deserted at this time of day. And we spotted several birds in the trees around us.

On our way back to the entrance, we also spotted an agouti on the way and a birdwatching tour let us peek in their scope to see a female quetzal.

By the time we made it back to the entrance, it was a little after 3pm. And though we didn’t go on a guided tour, we both felt like our self-guided hike in the Monteverde Cloud Forest was perfect.

Tips for Visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest

How to avoid the crowds.

This can be hard. Very hard. The Monteverde Cloud Forest is awesome, so a lot of people want to come and see it. It’s obviously more crowded in the dry season than the rainy season (and even more so during holidays like New Years). We visited in late March and it wasn’t too bad. Yes there were people (including that loud, obnoxious group), but we maybe only saw 10 other groups total.

Some people would also recommend coming in the morning to avoid the larger tour groups, but we visited in the late afternoon and didn’t come across any large bus-loads of people.

You could also hike some of the other trails that are less frequented. There are less people on these (Sendero Pantanoso & the northern parts of Sendero Chomogo and Sendero El Rio). But the map we received at the entrance didn’t have these trails on it, so we weren’t sure if they were closed or not. If you want to hike these, make sure to inquire about them when you buy your tickets.

How to See Wildlife

Okay for starters, see the above. Avoiding other groups and being quiet is going to be your number one friend in this regard.

If the Monteverde Cloud Forest is also going to be your only hike in the area, I would consider then hiring a guide if you absolutely want to see wildlife. Like I mentioned above, we didn’t and we still saw plenty. But that’s not always a guarantee (hell, it isn’t a guarantee even with a guide). So if this is make or break for you, consider their tours.

You can find information on their tours here . They offer birdwatching tours, natural history walks, and night tours.

camino verde tours

Be Prepared for the Weather

So it’s a cloud forest. And you need to be prepared for walking around in a cloud. It’s a little drier from December to April, but there’s a good chance you’ll still get wet. We did on the first half of our hike. It’s also slightly cooler here (even during the day). I wore long pants and a long sleeve shirt ( plus my rain jacket ).

I would recommend a pair of hiking boots  or a pair of sneakers that can get dirty and muddy. Because they will.

You may also want a rain jacket . Mine was helpful not only here, but also as an extra layer in town at night since it was much cooler in Santa Elena than I thought it would be.

Lastly, if you have some nice photography equipment, consider a bag with it’s own rain cover. My PacSafe bag has one built in. This allowed me to easily snap it on when the mist got a bit too much.

Self-guided hike in the monteverde cloud forest

Nitty Gritty

Price. Basically you’ll pay about $20 per person. There are discounts for students, children, and if you are a Costa Rican resident. But everyone else pays $20. Details on the fees here.

Map of Trails. There are 13km of trails you can explore (and so much more of the park is off limits to visitors). The map we received at the entrance is slightly different than the one in the post above, but it should give you an idea of the trails. (Unfortunately I cannot find the map above on their site anymore, or else I’d link to it.)

Hours. The Monteverde Cloud Forest is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location.  If you have your own car, you can easily google map your way there. Note that at least half the road between Santa Elena and the Reserve is unpaved. And it’s really, really rough gravel/dirt.

3 Best Coffee Tours in Monteverde + Our TOP Choice!

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

The main attraction in Costa Rica’s beautiful Monteverde region is the famous cloud forest , but a coffee tour is also a must while you’re here! One of the things Costa Rica is famous for is its coffee and Monteverde is actually one of the best places to do a coffee tour . There are some fantastic tours here where coffee is the star of the show, as we’ve discovered on our many visits to this stunning region.

We love a cup of coffee to start a busy day of exploring Costa Rica – whether we’re grabbing it at a local shop or in our hotel room before heading out. But I think there’s something really cool about going to a coffee farm to see how this delicious drink gets its start.

Another huge bonus about coffee tours (if you have a sweet tooth like me!) is that they also often teach you about chocolate. Now, we know that not everyone likes coffee, but I haven’t met someone who doesn’t love chocolate!

A coffee tour is such a fun way to learn more about the Monteverde region. So whether you love coffee or could live without it (something that I personally couldn’t imagine), keep on reading to discover our top 3 picks for coffee tours in Monteverde.

About Coffee in Monteverde

Bailey grinds Cacao Beans on a chocolate tour in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is among the top 20 largest coffee producers in the world, despite the fact that it only makes around 1% of the world’s coffee beans. Still, Costa Rican coffee is held in very high regard thanks to its incredible flavor. Plus, the country’s diverse landscape produces several different types of beans.

Coffee has been grown in Costa Rica since the early 1800s, but plantations only began popping up in the Monteverde region in the early 1930s. Families from Costa Rica’s central valley moved out here and introduced coffee farming to a totally different part of the country!

Monteverde is one of the lushest regions of Costa Rica, which is really saying something. One thing that makes Monteverde stand out is how many different flavors it’s able to produce. Some of the most notable ones are fruit, chocolate, citrus, and cedar, whereas many other areas are known for just one or two of these.

There are lots of small farms in the area, many of whom work together to ship exceptional coffee all over the world! Monteverde has a pretty small population, so coffee is a big part of the local economy here.

Best Coffee Tours in Monteverde

1. coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane tour (best overall).

Grinding Cacao Beans on the Don Juan Coffee Tour Monteverde

This coffee tour  is our favorite overall! It’s a guided tour of the Don Juan coffee plantation, and it’s super fun and engaging. We had an amazing time when we did this – in fact, we think it’s one of the best coffee tours in the whole of Costa Rica .

As you explore the lush fields of the farm, you’ll learn so much about how coffee, cacao beans, and sugar cane are grown, and then transformed into the products we know and love. The tour is very interactive and you’ll help your guide press sugar cane juice, and of course, get to taste plenty of coffee. There’s also a chocolate workshop where you’ll make your own, and then get to eat it for a true bean-to-bar experience.

This tour was so interesting, our guide had us captivated the entire time. It’s also a perfect tour for families because it’s so interactive and walking around the farm isn’t physically strenuous at all. Plus, all the paths are paved, so they can easily accommodate a stroller or wheelchair. Basically, it’s a great tour for travelers of all ages.

The tour costs $52 USD for adults and $16 USD for kids, although this doesn’t include transport to and from the Don Juan plantation . It’s really easy to reach from Santa Elena though, which is where most people stay in Monteverde. It’s 10 minutes in a taxi or you can drive yourself if you’ve got a rental car .

The tour lasts for 2 hours and you can  reserve it online here  for 8 am, 10 am, 1 pm, or 3 pm. It’s available every day of the week, so it’s easy to fit into your trip, and it really does deliver an exceptional experience.

2. Coffee and Chocolate Walking and Sightseeing Tour

Coffee beans on the plant in Costa Rica

If you’re looking for a coffee tour that includes transport,  this half-day tour  is the perfect choice. You’ll be picked up at 8 am, so you can enjoy walking around the farm before it gets too hot, and then have the rest of the day free to relax or tick off another must-do Monteverde activity .

You’ll visit a plantation near the Monteverde Cloud Forest and learn all about how coffee and chocolate are grown and produced in this lush tropical environment. Your guide will also teach you more about the parts that these products play in Costa Rica’s economy and society. Then, after you’ve finished exploring, you’ll enjoy a coffee and chocolate tasting with views over the Gulf of Nicoya.

The tour costs $81 USD per person and you need to book for at least two people at a time. It lasts for 4 hours, so you’ll be back at around midday to grab lunch at one of the best restaurants in Monteverde . We really like the fact that this tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off so you don’t need to worry about it on the day.

So for a hassle-free way to enjoy amazing coffee and chocolate, book your tour now !

Related Read: Another must is exploring Monteverde’s hanging bridges ! These epic bridges suspended over the jungle get you closer to Costa Rica’s wildlife since you’re eye to eye with all the birds !

3. Monteverde Cloud Forest and Coffee Tour Shore Excursion

Coffee beans dry in Costa Rica

If you’re staying in the coastal city of Puntarenas or stopping here on a cruise, you can explore Monteverde’s famous cloud forest AND visit a coffee farm on  this full-day tour that leaves from the port!

You’ll be picked up from the port in Puntarenas at around 8 am and driven to Monteverde, which is about 1.5 hours inland. There, you’ll head into the stunning Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve , which you’ll explore by hiking across suspended bridges. From here, you get amazing views of the forest and you’ll see so much tropical wildlife.

It’s great going with a guide because they will teach you about this amazing forest and help you spot wildlife, including quetzals and poison dart frogs! The Cloud Forest is also home to monkeys, ocelots, jaguars, and 14 different species of hummingbirds, so you’re bound to see some cool creatures along the way. Our guide was awesome at pointing out animals I totally would have walked right by!

After exploring Monteverde Cloud Forest, you’ll have a traditional Costa Rican meal for lunch, which is usually a  casado  consisting of meat, rice, and beans.

Then, you’ll head to a coffee plantation to see a totally different side of the Monteverde region. You’ll get to learn about the bean-to-cup process and of course sample some of the plantation’s top blends. Then, you’ll head back to Puntarenas where you’ll be dropped back at the port between 5 and 6 pm.

It costs $128 USD which we think is a good deal since it includes transport, lunch, and guided tours of the Cloud Forest and a coffee plantation. It’s perfect if you’re not staying in Monteverde but still want to see the area and do a coffee tour!

We think that this tour is a fantastic way to get a snapshot of Monteverde in just one day, not to mention enjoy a quintessential Costa Rica coffee farm experience, so reserve a spot online here if this sounds like the experience for you!

Are Coffee Tours in Monteverde worth it?

A guide shows us small coffee sprouts in Costa Rica during a guided tour in Monteverde

Yes! We had an incredible time on  the tour that we did , and overall we think that Monteverde is one of the best places to do a coffee tour in Costa Rica.

The other is La Fortuna , where there are also lots of great choices. One that really stands out, though, is  the Don Olivo chocolate tour . On this tour, you get to explore a farm that has been producing chocolate for almost a century, as well as tropical fruit, rum, sugar cane, and spices.

It’s a family-run plantation, so it’s a great place to support, and the guides are so passionate and funny. You get to sample so much fruit, coffee, and of course chocolate along the way that you’ll feel a bit like a kid in a candy store – only better! Plus, it’s a steal at only $25 USD per person when you book online .

Other Things to do While You’re in Monteverde

camino verde tours

While enjoying some of the best coffee in the country is definitely a must-do, don’t forget to explore the rest of this area. There are so many fun activities in Monteverde , that you could spend your entire vacation here! These are just a few of our favorites:

  • Night walk – There are some animals you can only see at night! Guided Night Walks in Monteverde are a great way to (safely!) explore the jungle after dark. This night tour is a small group of up to 8 and you’ll have a naturalist guide to help you spot all the nocturnal creatures. It’s also super affordable at only $33 USD including round-trip transport.
  • Go ziplining – Ziplining is easily a top adventure activity in Monteverde. This ziplining tour has it all ! It’s three hours of fun including the Superman zipline, which is the longest and highest  zipline in Costa Rica  and all of Latin America!
  • Selvatura Park  – Selvatura Park is a nature and adventure park located inside a protected rainforest. This park has a network of  hanging bridges  above the tree canopy that give you incredible aerial views of the rainforest. Explore all the bridges and the surrounding trail with the  Selvatura Park Hanging Bridge Tour . This gives you two hours to enjoy the forest from unique viewpoints.
  • Go bungy jumping  – Bungy jumping is one of the fun Monteverde attractions you have to try … if you’re brave enough!  The Extreme Bungee Jumping in Monteverde Tour  has a daring jump from over 460 feet (140 meters). That’s the highest in Costa Rica and all of Central America!
  • Horseback riding  – This is a great way to give your feet a break and explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest!  This Monteverde Cloud Forest horseback riding tour  lets you cover a lot of ground as you trek through farmland and the surrounding landscape in Monteverde. Keep an eye out for toucans, parrots, monkeys, and other critters as you experience the rural side of Costa Rica, far from any crowds or traffic.

Where to Stay in Monteverde, Costa Rica

The hot tub at Chira Glamping in Monteverde, Costa Rica

Monteverde may be a small tourist town but there are a surprisingly large amount of great hotels in all budget ranges. To help you pick a favorite, here are our top recommendations:

Selina Monteverde – $

If you’re a budget traveler or backpacker, there are lots of nice hostels in Monteverde. If you like modern features and outstanding facilities,  Selina Monteverde  is the best option. The hostel is beautiful, has great reviews, and lots of activities including yoga.

The only downside is Selina is a high-end backpacker hostel. Prices begin at $97 USD for a one-night stay. You can book Selina  on Booking.com or  here on Hostelworld .

Camino Verde B&B Monteverde – $$

For those well past their backpacking days who can spend a little more, I love  Camino Verde B&B Monteverde Costa Rica . This boutique hotel has beautiful rooms, a deck with magnificent views, and includes breakfast. It’s a comfortable hotel that comes at a great price.

Rates begin at $176 USD/night. You can check availability and book a room online here .

Chira Glamping Monteverde – $$$

If you’re a luxury traveler I highly suggest choosing what we call a “destination hotel”. These hotels are an attraction in themselves because of the unique experience they offer. In Monteverde one of the best is  Chira Glamping Monteverde which offers luxury camping with the option to have your own private hottub surrounded by nature.

The view from the property is incredible! Rates begin at $375 USD/night. You can check availability and book online with Booking.com .

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

I hope we’ve helped you narrow down which coffee tour to take in Monteverde! There’s something about a cup of coffee on vacation that tastes even better – am I right? And when it’s fresh on a coffee farm, it’s even more delicious!
