Our boat safari season runs from May thought to October when the flood waters are high in the Okavango Delta. The rainy season is in our summer months and the water takes some months to reach the Okavango Delta from the highlands of Angola . The best time for game viewing in the Okavango is also from May to October, as the animal life is concentrated along the flooded areas and the vegetation in the surrounding area has dried out. The best time for birding is from August when the migrant bird populations are returning.

During our boat safaris in the Okavango Delta, most of the day is spent exploring and drifting while game watching and birding or just relaxing onboard taking in the magnificent palm-framed views of the Okavango. Each days experience offers very different scenery and natural diversity.

As the sun makes its way to the western horizon, you will arrive at your overnight camp. Our exclusive luxury tented camps are set up on un-fenced remote islands in the Okavango Delta shared only with wildlife that roams freely. We operated in secluded parts of the Okavango where you will very rarely encounter any other tourists.

No African experience is complete without a refreshing sun downer cruise followed by a fine dining experience in our dining tent and evenings are spent around the campfire gazing at stars reliving the day’s experiences in the Okavango Delta.

Travelling on these remote waterways offers unique and special encounters with a variety of wild animals. Your safety is paramount to us, therefore we take all possible precautions to avoid dangerous situations. A certain amount of physical agility is required as you will need to board and disembark boats in natural wetland areas, we will however assist if necessary. Our boats are fitted with sun protection as well as environmentally friendly and quiet running modern outboard motors.

Honorable Alexander P. Bicket – Pittsburgh USA

We all arrived back safely in the US after an absolutely wonderful safari with you and your team last week. I just wanted to thank you for making our 5 days in Botswana so special and memorable. Susan, Ian, August, Justine and I cannot thank you enough for your hard work, hospitality and graciousness that went into making this safari the awesome time that it was. Please pass on our sincere thanks to BK, NT, Jackie, Wilfred and the rest of your team that made us feel so comfortable and at home. They all worked so hard with you to give us an amazing experience.

Jane, Terry, Charles & Teddy Endsor – London UK

I am writing to say a huge, thank you, for our wonderful time with you and your team in Okavango Delta. It exceeded all expectations and on every level, it was very special. We really enjoyed our time with you. The walks, game drives, animals, birds, food etc. etc. Thank you very very much. We very much hope that we will meet up again.

Teddy wrote. I can’t thank you enough for the most memorable days in Botswana. I am still digesting all the wonderful memories and how lucky we were to be in your very knowledgeable and safe hands. It was so special to get to know you and the team a bit as well, it made the whole experience a once in a lifetime. Everything and everyone felt very connected.

Ravindra and Kavita – India

It has been a month since we returned from the lovely trip to Botswana. Not a day has passed by when we did not relive the memories of the Bush. The idea of going to Botswana was a novel one and there were a lot of question marks along the way. We write this to thank you for your unstinting support all through the journey. We had the most fabulous of times, with an amazing scenery, wonderful bird and animal sightings and of course, the awesome bush camping experience. The love and care of the crew Jackie, David and Gabriel was humbling and the food was just delicious. I am finding it hard to describe every experience in nothing but the superlatives, as not even the superlatives come close to what we felt. It is a deeply nurturing experience that now lives on in our hearts. The wonderful people who made it possible deserve all the thanks we can offer.

We had a special meal preference and not once did we feel an inconvenience because of it. It speaks volumes of the capability of your team. The guide was awesome. I guess, a book can be written on just the guide. Ace was the backbone of the entire experience, he kept it alive with snippets of knowledge thrown in between the sightings helping us, the first timers, make a sense of the wild. His uncanny vision got us digging deeper into our binoculars to locate the birds flying far into the horizon or locate the cats sleeping next to us. The cherry on the cake was the amazing experience we had with Lions in the camp site. It remains an unforgettable experience. Thank you again for the experience of a lifetime, wishing you and your team the very best for years ahead.

Des Mahoney – South Africa

Dear Jacques and Team. My family is struggling to adjust to life after the delta. We all were looking forward to a holiday in the swamps but it exceeded expectations. There are many lodges and places to visit in the delta, but you and your team made it seem like we were the only ones ever to visit. It was such a treat and a privilege. Ace, Jackie, Mosh, David and Gabriel were not only brilliant at all they did, but made nothing look like any trouble. The game experience was unforgettable, the sundowners the best, the food, the camp (even the ablutions) were all spot on.

Thank you….we’ll be back and will recommend ORS to others.

Elke & Paul Hockings – Sweden

We have now arrived back home in Sweden after a fantastic trip to Botswana and the Victoria Falls. We brought back home many wonderful memories from this beautiful part of the world. Among all the impressions and marvels, the boat trip in the Okavango delta stood out by long shot! We would very much like to thank you for organizing this trip for us with such dedication, patience, knowledge and efforts! It is difficult to know where to start with the praise. All the logistics and operations went perfectly smoothly. The food was by far better than what we could have expected in these camping-in-the-wild conditions (just think of all these great fresh salads and freshly baked breads, muffins, desserts). The team caring for us was very friend and supportive. The jewel in the crown was, however, our guide Ace. What a great guide he was! He did not only share freely with us his infinite knowledge on birds, mammals and plants but he managed to infect us with his great love for the nature in the delta. All things large and small mattered and made us marvel. Your organisation, Ace and the team had set a high standard that was impossible to follow up. Surely, the car safari, Kasane and Vic Falls were great, too. But we all realised that nothing could match those four days in the delta! Allow me to say it one more time: thank you so much, guys, for this great experience! Warm wishes,

Larry and Marcia Ward – Australia

Here, here, echoing Elke and Paul’s comments, it was amazing and great thanks to Ace, Mosh, Jackie and David, an unforgettable experience!

Caroline and Mark – Northumberland UK

Back now and sorting ourselves out. That was just the most amazing and extraordinary holiday that you put together for us. Thank you so much for everything you did and we all loved every moment. Jacques and David were the most brilliant, knowledgeable and fun guides that we have ever had. The two parts of the holiday were so different and melded together so well. It was amazing how close we got to wildlife in the boat and absolutely amazing the food that was produced in both camps. A trip of a lifetime without doubt. The new experiences we had were wonderful. Camping out under the stars was brilliant. On our last night with Jacques, a leopard wandered through the camp and then lay down under a bush, quite happy with all of us, with head torches, watching him. We had a mock charge from an elephant and a very grumpy hippo who jumped into the river to see us off!

Wendy Adams – South Africa

Trying to adjust to reality back home – it isn’t easy! So many incredible visuals going through my mind. Just wanted to say a big thank you to you, and to Kathy in the background, for pulling it out the bag. It was an amazing trip and an amazing opportunity to see the Delta in that way. Except the floods have failed and our river safari had to be replaced by a vehicle and walking safari. What a hardship! We were extraordinarily privileged to be granted permits to drive in with our guide, Jacques Conradie, about 120kms from Maun into the heart of what would have been the Delta in a normal year. Never saw another person or vehicle. Even the roads disappeared after a while. Incredible wildlife all coming to the permanent pools in the river. A unique perspective of the Delta in a dry year. And the “flood” or the trickle of the flood, crept it’s way past our camp during the week.

Marie and Anton Reynolds – Rustenburg , South Africa

If we would express in words how amazing our experience was, it would take all the giga bites in cyberspace. This was truly the most incredible week of our lives. We would like to congratulate you on putting together the ideal package for bird lovers, nature lovers, animal lovers, water babies and adventure seekers.

The staff were amazing, all of them all the time. They were relaxed, displayed a wonderful sense of humor and absolutely professional in their conduct all the time. The way both Ace and Lister handled the boats with such care, respected the animals, conveyed their knowledge about trees, birds, animal’s reptiles… . . . and the list is never ending. The walks we had will always be part of our fondest memories. Jacky, Boyzi, Jani could do enough for us. The care they took with the meals, table decorations, serviettes, and by golly the FOOD! one cannot wish for better. The menu was interesting varied and extremely scrumptious, eish! Who will ever forget the succulent steak of the last night Amazing! In short (to use Boyzi’s words) the experience was SOOPA DOOOPA!

We will definitely be back, God willing next year the same time. Thank you yet again, we wish you every success with your venture! Till we meet again. God bless.

Sheila Head – South Africa

The river safari was a really fantastic experience. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. Ace is amazing and is so knowledgeable – a really lovely guy who was so patient and kind, especially with dear old Arthur. The whole team was wonderful and was all so helpful and friendly. How they managed to produce muffins, rolls and bread in that bush kitchen on an open fire is beyond me! All the food was delicious and we loved the special touches of the way the cloth serviettes were folded etc. All in all it was a really wonderful trip and I would have no hesitation in recommending your river safaris. It was the best wildlife experience I have ever had. Many, many thanks to you and the whole team.

Francois and Aletta Feenstra – Western Cape, South Africa

Dear Okavango Safari’s team: Thanks to Jacques, Ace and team for an outstanding adventure. Well planned, relaxed and professional outfit that you people run. Highlights were boat trips and exposure to nature and animals/birds; accommodation/facilities (outstanding small touches of greatness) in pristine nature; excellent food (manner of presentation) and, for us, the easy-relaxed-just enjoy yourself environment you present. Your outfit comes highly recommended, to all nature lovers, but in particular, bird lovers. Thanks, Johan Rothman’s group of 10 (Francois and Aletta Theron, Wellington, South Africa)

Freek & Kobie Lindeque

Very, , very enjoyable safari. Can recommend it to anybody loving nature. The camping facilities were very good and the food delicious.

Carole McMullen

The Delta has been on my ‘bucket list’ for years and I was not disappointed, it had to be one of the best holiday experiences I have ever had. Jacques, Costa and the team behind the scenes could not be faulted. The Delta has to be a very special place and no wonder it has been awarded a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Jacques and his team managed to create a unique experience that only comes with the obvious passion that they have for their environment and the wish to share their knowledge of both the flora, and fauna of the Delta. The camps were very comfortable, the meals that were produce from the bush kitchen were delicious and varied and the evenings around the camp fire were always entertaining with never a dull moment. Hopefully I will get the chance to go again.

UNIQUELY BOTSWANA: EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT WATER ACTIVITIES FROM BOAT CRUISES TO HOUSEBOAT HOLIDAYS

There is perhaps no more relaxing and romantic way to observe Botswana’s amazing wildlife and discover the country’s natural beauty than by going on a Chobe River boat cruise or a Botswana houseboat safari. By gently cruising along the waters of the Chobe River or the Okavango Delta, you can witness spectacular birdlife and wildlife from a different perspective and enjoy a safari experience like no other.

Group of people on a boat on the Chobe River

Magical sunset and great photo opportunities for nature lovers

One of the best things about a Botswana boat safari is that there are so many different ways of enjoying it and making it your own. Perhaps you would just like to go on a Chobe River boat cruise to discover animals and a glorious sunset. Or maybe you would like to spend a couple of nights on a houseboat on either the Chobe River or the Okavango Delta. You could of course also combine the two and experience amazing safari moments in this wonderfully unique aquatic way.

As we were cruising along the Chobe River and sighting animals that were coming to the river’s edge for an afternoon drink, I suddenly realised what a comfortable way of going on safari this really is. As opposed to going on a land safari, there was no dust, no bumpy roads, and a lovely cool breeze on our boat cruise. What a fantastic way of getting close to the animals!

TWO OF BOTSWANA'S MOST ICONIC SAFARI DESTINATIONS

The mighty Chobe River and the iconic Okavango Delta are naturally the best places for any boat safari in Botswana. Both regions offer beautiful cruises in small, comfortable motorboats with possible animal sightings in fantastic landscapes. Often, these excursions also include a memorable sundowner for you to enjoy on the way too. Charming houseboats also operate on both the Chobe River, as well as the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta. Spend a few nights on a houseboat and get to know these different landscapes and their inhabitants in the most comfortable way.

Boat safaris are possible all year round on the Chobe River , while the best time for water-based activities in the Okavango Delta is from May until September. This is when the water level is at its highest point and is also the best time for game viewing as many animals, especially elephants will come to the river’s edge to drink and play in the cool waters.

Dry and green season Best for boat cruises on the Chobe River

Boat cruises and houseboat stays on the Chobe River are possible all year round. Whether you come during the dry season from May until October or the green season from November until April, water levels will be high enough to enjoy a boat trip. Just ensure that the season you choose to travel also works for safari activities in other national parks you will be visiting.

May to September Best for boat cruises in the Okavango Delta

If you want to do a boat cruise specifically in the Okavango Delta, you have two options: Either travel during the dry season from May until September, when the water-levels – albeit counter-intuitively – are highest in the Okavango Delta. Or alternatively travel during the green season and book a water-based camp located at permanent rivers and lagoons with consistent water levels throughout the year.

BOOK YOUR BOTSWANA SAFARI & BOAT TRIP NOW

Botswana’s amazing water landscapes are waiting for you to be discovered on a motorboat cruise or a houseboat safari. Whether you explore the mighty Chobe River or the waters of the Okavango Delta, you will be rewarded with an incredibly rewarding safari experience.

Chobe river boat cruise: how, when and where.

A boat cruise on the Chobe River or along the shallow waters of the Okavango Delta is a safari activity which should be on every traveller who wishes to explore Botswana list. Often combined with a sundowner, you get to admire beautiful landscapes, capture amazing wildlife moments, and witness a stunning African sunset. We make use of smaller boats which are more agile and enable you to draw even closer to any wildlife sightings you may encounter. These boats also have a limited capacity, meaning you are provided with unobstructed views and allow you a more intimate safari experience.

The classic Botswana motorboat cruise experience is on the Chobe River and can provide you with excellent wildlife encounters at any time of year. If you want to travel during a time where wildlife is at its most plentiful at the river’s edge, then the dry season between May and October is the perfect time for you to go. If it is spectacular birdlife you are after, then the green season between November to April is the best time for you. No matter when you go, you will experience beautiful landscapes and amazing sunsets.

Boat cruises are a great opportunity to see Botswana’s birdlife up close.

We can also organise special interest boat cruises which focus on photographic safaris.

Why to do a boat cruise on your Botswana safari

A Chobe River boat cruise or a Botswana houseboat safari lets you redefine what it means to be on safari. By drifting along cool waters, you can comfortably discover some of country’s best wildlife regions in a way that cannot be replicated anywhere else. The sight of the sun going down, casting a sparkling glow over the Okavango Delta or Chobe River is a beautiful image which will stay with you forever. Both a motorboat cruise and a houseboat safari offer their own special charm and provide two unique experiences. Both allow you to step outside the realm of what it means to go on a “normal” classic safari. It is peaceful and calming to float along the Chobe’s or the Delta’s waters and at the same time, can be exhilarating when you come across great wildlife sightings. A variety of animals such as elephant, buffalo, crocodile, hippo, various antelope, and a plethora of bird species can be seen in and around the cool waters making this an almost ‘must do’ of the most popular activities in Botswana for everyone.

Okavango Delta boat cruise: how, when and where

A boat cruise in the Okavango Delta can be more seasonal, depending on the region and the given water levels at the time. Water levels are at their highest during the dry season and this is when most motorboat activities are offered. However, some accommodations, located in regions with a more consistent water level allow for water activities all year through. Plenty of times, these lodges will be inaccessible by vehicle, even a 4×4 safari vehicle, so you would fly to the nearest airstrip and then be transferred to your accommodation in a motorboat. You know you are in for a treat when the transfer to your accommodation is already exciting in itself.

Houseboat experiences: how, when and where

An overnight stay on a houseboat on either the Chobe River or the panhandle of the Okavango Delta is the ultimate in exploring Botswana in a comfortable and relaxing way. Houseboats such as Chobe Princess and the Zambezi Queen offer beautiful cabins and marvelous facilities with multiple decks, with tremendous views and excellent cuisine to delight any traveller. Other houseboats on the Chobe such as the Pangolin Voyageur also offer beautiful facilities and can even be perfectly geared up towards photographic safaris upon request.

Houseboats on the Okavango Panhandle also provide a fantastic adventure for travellers who wish to explore the waterways of one of the largest inland deltas in the world. Guests usually spend one to two nights on the houseboat and generally all, or most, activities are included. This means that not only do you get to enjoy your beautiful houseboat and its facilities, but you can also enjoy exciting activities such as guided river safaris on a smaller motorboat, guided fishing trips, cultural village outings and even land-based safari game drives. A Botswana houseboat safari can be done at any time of year and is the ultimate excursion which combines the adventure of safari with the relaxation of a holiday.

The full-day boating safari takes you up the Boro River and through the buffalo fence, exploring the Okavango Delta channels towards Chief’s Island. This experience showcases magnificent views of the watery landscapes, papyrus and reed-lined channels, wide lagoons and palm tree islands. Wildlife encounters to name a few will include hippo’s, crocodiles lazing on the banks and different antelopes such as the water-loving red lechwe. A real highlight of a boat safari is witnessing a herd of elephants feeding and swimming in the river channels. As well as wildlife, being on the water allows for fantastic birdlife sightings such as the majestic fish eagles, kingfishers and African jacanas. Skimming smoothly over the clear waters of the Okavango is a tranquil experience that is a must do when visiting Maun.

The full-day boat safari departs early morning from Maun. It can be chilly on the water in the early hours of the morning especially when the boat is cruising. Okavango Experience

10 days | discover africa’s rich and fertile waterways, worthy of world heritage.

See some of the amazing range of wildlife in Chobe National Park, Botswana

See southern Africa's iconic waterfalls, rivers and inland canals on this ten-day trip – an overland journey highlighting the magic of Mother Nature. Canoe down the lush waterways of the Okavango Delta, watch hippos wallowing along the shores of the Chobe River, be mesmerised by the mirage of Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and marvel at the crashing white water of Victoria Falls. Pack a camera and an eye for adventure because these lush pockets of wilderness will reward you with incredible animal encounters, awesome photography opportunities and memories to last a lifetime.

Trip overview

  • Support local conservation efforts by visiting the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, the only place left in Botswana where both black and white rhinos reside.
  • Go wildlife-spotting with your small group and expert guides along the river at Chobe National Park, home to the world's highest concentration of African elephants.
  • Camping on a remote island in the heart of the Okavango wilderness is an experience you’ll never forget. As the sun sets and night falls, the sounds of Africa come alive.
  • Your first glimpse of the thundering Victoria Falls is undeniably captivating. With additional time for optional adventures, you’ll get to view the waterfalls from all angles!
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust. Donations help employ a team of Community Guardians who collaborate with locals to find sustainable solutions to human-wildlife conflict and conservation in Southern Africa.
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of the Big Five. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but this tour is as much about the journey as the destination. For more information on this style of travel, see Intrepid’s Africa overland page at https://www.intrepidtravel.com/africa/overland .
  • Camping out in the Okavango wilderness means digging a bush toilet and going without a shower. For most travellers this will be a small price to pay for time spent in such a beautiful and remote island location.
  • As the early bird catches the worm, so the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make better use of the safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days. The thrill of spotting your first lion or rhino is well worth any loss of sleep.
  • You may also want to check out our Explore Southern Africa trip if you have longer to explore in southern Africa.

Sawubona – welcome to South Africa! Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive early, we recommend visiting the eye-opening Apartheid Museum to start your journey with some crucial history before meeting up with your group. After your important meeting this evening, why not head out for an optional group dinner and get to know your newfound travel companions? Your leader can point you in the right direction with bar and restaurant recommendations.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Please ensure that if you choose to explore Johannesburg on your own that you take local advice and consult your group leader as to where it is safe to walk, especially at night.

Leaving South Africa behind, cross the border into Botswana and travel towards the Khama Rhino Sanctuary (approximately 8–10 hours). Situated on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary has drastically changed from a former hunting area to a conservation project. Built to protect Botswana's only remaining populations of both black and white rhinos, the sanctuary is also home to other wildlife including zebras, giraffes, leopards, ostriches and wildebeest, all of which can be seen grazing the many waterholes. Visiting this project benefits local communities and directly contributes to protecting the endangered white rhinoceros. Later on, head out on a dusk game drive to see the rhinos when they are most active.

  • Camping (with facilities) (1 night)
  • Khama Rhino Sanctuary - Sunset Game Drive Open Vehicle

At tonight’s camp, there may be the option to upgrade to a room for an additional cost (subject to availability).

Jump aboard your vehicle and head to Maun (approximately 8–9 hours). Here there will be an opportunity to stock up on any supplies you might need for your adventure ahead. Maun is the gateway to one of the world's most complex ecosystems, the Okavango Delta. This place is unlike anything in the world – a 16,000 square kilometre maze of lush wetlands and waterways teeming with wildlife. You might see hippos, crocodiles, elephants and big cats, but it's the animals aren’t the only drawcard here – the waterscapes and shimmering horizons will have you gazing for days.

Tonight, you'll stay on the outskirts of Maun at a simple campsite with shared facilities, wi-fi and optional upgrades.

Get right in the action today, jumping aboard a traditional mokoro – a dugout canoe steered by friendly local 'polers' – for an Okavango waterways experience. With some luck, you could spot some of the delta's unusual wildlife and exotic birdlife. Spend some time today exploring the maze of lagoons, lakes and streams on foot too, led by experienced local guides. Tonight, you’ll camp on a remote island right in the heart of the wilderness, falling asleep to the humming and buzzing of the African heartlands.

  • Bush camp (no facilities) (1 night)
  • Okavango Delta - Mokoro safari

In this far-out camping location, facilities are almost non-existent, so be ready to dig a bush toilet and go without a shower. This is the African wild in all its glory!

Wake up early and head out on a sunrise walk. Along the way, keep watch for elephants, and if the timing is right, you might also come across some Cape buffalo! These noble-looking beasts are more dangerous than they look, and their horns double as a kind of bone shield that's fittingly known as a 'boss'. Returning to camp for breakfast, you’ve got the rest of the day to relax. A refreshing swim, or perhaps a nap, could be on the cards – both good ideas in the warmer part of the day. Alternatively, take another mokoro trip to soak up that serene river atmosphere.

  • Okavango Delta - Sunrise Walk

After taking down your camp, return to the ‘poler’ station by mokoro, before continuing on to Maun by vehicle (approximately 2–3 hours). Today we will visit a local brewery that produces beer containing millet grown by small-scale farmers, rewarding them for their efforts to coexist with elephants and promoting an inclusive economy. This initiative enhances the benefits of sustainable farming practices and ties them to the region’s wildlife economy. After touring the brewery, we'll stick around for dinner and an included beer tasting. Tonight, settle in at camp on the outskirts of town.

  • Okavango Delta - Brewery Tour
  • Okavango Delta - Helicopter Scenic Flight - From USD250 - USD280

Tonight you will stay in a simple campsite which has shared facilities. Wi-fi and optional upgrades are available.

The scenic flight prices are dependent on the number of passengers in the plane or helicopter. See your group leader for more details.

Get up early and hit the road for Nata (approximately 6–7 hours). This small town is situated near the stunning Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, which are some of the largest on earth, covering around 12,000 square kilometres. This afternoon, take an excursion in an open vehicle to explore these seemingly endless plains in the Nata Bird Sanctuary. Surrounded by the Kalahari Desert, the pans are naturally dry and salty for a large part of the year. During this time, the arid landscape has an eerie feel to it as heat mirages disorientate the senses. Then, after the rains hit, it becomes a grassy refuge for migratory birds and animals.

  • Nata - Makgadikgadi Salt Pans 4x4 Excursion

Your campsite tonight is situated on the edge of the pans. It has a restaurant, swimming pool, gift shop, ATM and bar/lounge area. Upgrades are also available (subject to availability).

Hit the road to Chobe National Park (approximately 6–7 hours). Botswana's first national park is perhaps best known for its high concentration of elephants, which can often be seen swimming in the Chobe River. The river also attracts wallowing hippos, a variety of birdlife, crocodiles sunning themselves by the water's edge, and cheetahs and lions coming down to drink. Enjoy a sunset cruise on the Chobe – an ideal way to spend the afternoon and toast to another day in Africa.

  • Camping (with shared facilities) (1 night)
  • Chobe National Park - River Cruise

Your camp tonight has wi-fi available and optional upgrades (subject to availability). It's also close to a supermarket, so you can stock up on supplies while you're here.

Why not wake up early and see Chobe National Park from a different perspective, booking yourself in on an optional morning game drive. Afterwards, travel on to Victoria Falls (approximately 2–3 hours), crossing the border into Zimbabwe just in time to have lunch on the banks of the Zambezi River. Then it's free time to experience the sights and sounds of the mighty falls. This thundering curtain of water is about 1.7 kilometres wide, falling 108 metres into a narrow gorge below. In the wet season, the spray created can rise an incredible 400 metres as the falls become a raging torrent. In the dry season, the view of the falls is unobstructed by spray and you can see the little islets in the river below.

  • Victoria Falls - Victoria Falls Entrance Fee - USD50
  • Chobe National Park - Open Safari Vehicle Morning Game Drive - BWP580
  • Victoria Falls - Sunset Cruise - USD50

Your campsite tonight has wi-fi, an ATM and optional upgrades.

The Victoria Falls entrance fee is not included in the price of the trip as it is mandatory for tour groups with pre-purchased tickets to have a local escort. We feel that seeing these waterfalls for the first time should be an uninterrupted experience.

Your leader may take you to a local activity centre. Intrepid has not risk-assessed all activities and only those listed in Optional Activities are recommended. It is against company policy for leaders to facilitate the booking of anything that has not been risk-assessed or does not adhere to our company’s Responsible Travel policy and ethos. This includes organising transport to and from these activities.

We also ask travellers to avoid the Walk with the Lions experience as it is contrary to our Responsible Travel policy. While wildlife viewing is a big part of many itineraries, we strive to view animals in their natural habitats and with the greatest level of respect.

Your Okavango Experience ends after breakfast and there are no further activities planned. If you’re staying longer in Victoria Falls and are feeling adventurous, you might like to try whitewater rafting and canoeing. For an incredible scenic helicopter flight, choose Zambezi Helicopter Company (CAA Zimbabwe), the only Intrepid-endorsed operator. Your leader can help you arrange this.

  • Victoria Falls - Helicopter Flight (25 mins - Excludes US$30 fuel surcharge and NP fees) - USD284
  • Victoria Falls - Helicopter Flight of the Angels (12 mins - Excludes US$25 fuel surcharge and NP fees) - USD150
  • Victoria Falls - Whitewater rafting (Seasonal - excludes USD10 NP Fee) - USD126
  • Victoria Falls - River Song Sunset Cruise (excludes USD10 NP Fee) - USD75
  • Victoria Falls - Jet Boat (Seasonal - excludes USD10 NP Fee) - USD110
  • Victoria Falls - Standard Sunset Cruise (excludes USD10 NP Fee) - USD45
  • Victoria Falls - Bridge Swing - USD168
  • Victoria Falls - Traditional Village Tour - USD55
  • Victoria Falls - Bridge Tour - USD68

While at Victoria Falls you may hear about Devil’s Pool. Intrepid does not recommend the activity here due to the high risk involved. Our leaders cannot assist in organising this activity, as it is against company policy for leaders to facilitate the booking of anything that has not been risk-assessed or does not adhere to our company’s Responsible Travel policy and ethos.

Discover the iconic Okavango Delta

Officially declared UNESCO’s 1 000th World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, the Okavango Delta is undeniably Botswana’s evergreen crown jewel. The largest inland delta in the world, the broad Okavango River sinks into the dry sands of the Kalahari Desert, creating a lush and waterlogged oasis with crystal clear lagoons and channels, reeded islands and fertile floodplains. Spreading over more than 15,500 km² (almost 6,000 m²), the Okavango Delta is so fragile that, if it were denied water for even a decade, it would revert to a semi-desert.

This remarkable environment constantly adapts and changes with the ebb and flow of the floodwaters that seasonally inundate large portions of the delta. Although dry for two-thirds of the year, during the winter months the rising floodwaters create a maze of marshes, small wooded islands and shallow lagoons. On the edges of the delta, where land blurs with water, breeding herds of elephant splash gently through shallow channels, the long necks of a family of giraffe materialise slowly out of the delta skyline and graceful sitatunga antelope hide in the reeds. It is a place where you can wonder at the antics of wild dog in the morning and cast a line for tiger fish in the afternoon, wake in the dappled shade of a forest and enjoy dinner beneath the boughs of a massive baobab at full moon.

Explore the Okavango Delta by mokoro (dugout canoe) or motorised boat cruises (seasonal), on-foot or on a game drive.

Why we love it

An unexpected wonder.

The Okavango River, which emanates from the Angolan highlands, sinks into the dry sands of the Kalahari Desert, creating a lush and waterlogged oasis. Known as ‘the river that never finds the sea’, crystal-clear channels spread over the thirstlands of the Kalahari; a bizarre and brilliant water-wonderment.

A watery wilderness

A variety of incredible water experiences is on offer in the Delta. Glide through a maze of clear channels and opaque lagoons on a traditionally-made mokoro, silently passing by unsuspecting wildlife, or cover a greater distance on a motorised boat (seasonal). Sparkling channels teem with fish and bird-life.

Iconic wildlife sightings

The Delta is home to a large number of species, including some specially-adapted semi-aquatic creatures, such as the elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga antelope. Hundreds of fish, bird, frogs and insects inhabit the channels and reeded banks. Wild cat, serval and pangolin can also be spotted at night.

An abundance of space

Vast stretches of untouched, unfenced wilderness and unrivalled game viewing are what most guests love about the Okavango Delta. Leave the crowds behind, and enjoy a full-day safari exploring this pristine wetland system brimming with abundant wildlife without seeing another vehicle

The Kubu Queen

The panhandle & tsdodilo hills.

The Kubu Queen is a charming vintage-style houseboat travelling along the Okavango Delta’s panhandle offering classic river safaris, excellent fishing and birding opportunities. Sleeping six on board with the option of accommodating additional guests in dome tents on islands at night, this is an ideal experience for friends, families and small groups. This is a water and wilderness experience, not a big game safari, and the focus is on boating, fishing, birding and walking.

Gently travelling along the papyrus-lined channels, enjoying ever-changing lush Delta scenery, the experience on The Kubu Queen will be both relaxing and fascinating. For couples, small groups, families and friends, this experience if often a highlight of a Botswana safari. The Kubu Queen is an activity in her own right. Enjoy the comfort and leisurely style of this relaxing river safari with incredible birding and fishing opportunities on board the houseboat and from the tender. Guided walks on larger islands perfect for exploring and stretching your legs.

Accommodation is simple but comfortable. This double-decker houseboat is complete with two double bedded cabins downstairs and two single cabins upstairs. An additional two sofas can be converted into beds ensuring 6 are accommodated comfortably. Additional guests stay in spacious dome tents on the island at night, so up to 12 guests may be catered for. A separate WC and shower facilities on board shared by all guests. Everyone enjoys convivial camp-fire dinners on shore under stunning starlit skies.

Bird-watching and fishing are the major pastimes on the cruise. Gently forging through the pristine reed-filtered river, The Kubu Queen (Kubu meaning Hippo in the local Setswana language) quietly allows for a continual display of bird-watching. The Pel’s Fishing Owl, Osprey, African Skimmers and aquatic creatures are blissfully unconcerned by the quiet passing of this beautiful vessel.

The fishing needs little introduction in these permanent, life-giving waters. Thrilling encounters with Tiger Fish, gentle casting for Okavango Bream and trying one’s luck for a great catfish keep keen and amateur anglers entertained and absorbed for hours!

The Kubu Queen’s main moorings are in Shakawe – at the top of the Panhandle, 380km from Maun. Access by vehicle along tarred road or by aircraft into Shakawe International Airport. From here, the journey southwards takes you to isolated Okavango River islands where you’ll berth for the night anchored close to the bank where one of the River’s mighty tree species: a Sycamore Fig, Mangosteen, African Ebony create safe harbour. The tranquil locations offer the perfect opportunity to explore islands on foot, quietly deciphering tracks and signs of animal and bird activity.

Day Trips to Tsodilo Hills , an hour from Shakawe, can be arranged and offer a fascinating insight to the ancient cultures of the San Bushman. The hills are a place of great spiritual significance for San people who originally inhabited this area. There are almost 4,000 prehistoric paintings, spread across over 200 sites throughout the hills. There are a number of trail routes on offer, depending on fitness levels and local guides will offer insight to the significance of the most important paintings.

I had a very different waterborne experience in Botswana , spending a week in three Great Plains Conservation camps—the last on Sitatunga Private Island, a recently opened retreat accessible only by boat or helicopter. The first two camps, Selinda and Duba Plains , are longstanding outposts for Great Plains, which owns 15 properties across Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.

Great Plains Conservation Sitatunga Island in Botswana

The three camps are all “open,” meaning no fences, with the number of “tents” kept purposely small to deliver on that private experience. The word “tent” is a misnomer. The multi-room suites look rustic but are designer-caliber, with stylized mosquito nets around the king-sized beds (and air-conditioning coming from the headboards), living rooms with leather couches, stocked liquor cabinets and Nespresso machines.

Beside the wood-clad showers and his-and-hers sinks are full-sized copper bathtubs, a luxury you wouldn’t expect in a remote outback (the camps run on solar power.) On the outside deck are a plunge pool and Peloton bike. A professional Canon camera is provided to document the trip.

It’s common to see elephant herds, baboons with babies clinging to them and warthog broods (it was the November birthing season) ambling 15 feet in front of the screened bedroom windows.

Great Plains Conservation Safari

There are myriad camps in this region, but Great Plains takes great pains to create a microcosm of this part of Africa, where your group feels like Karen Blixen seeing elephants, lions, and leopards for the first time. It’s a far cry from the traffic jams of tourist buses several of our group experienced on other safaris.

On our twice-daily, three-hour drives on the bumpy, dusty trails around Selinda and Duba Plains, we encountered no other groups or, really, any signs of civilization outside the camps.

Great Plains Conservation Safari Botswana.

I’d come expecting a Disney experience, where the animals appear on cue. Instead, we had to search for them, including an elusive leopard keeping a wary eye on a group of baboons and two young male lions trying to take over the local Tsaro pride by killing off the lead male. (We saw the two lounging around under a tree in the hot mid-day sun, while the pride was off in another corner of the reserve.)

The week quickly took on a pleasant cadence: Breakfast, in the Land Cruiser by 6:30 to beat the unseasonably brutal heat, four hours driving on the trail, lunch, siesta, and the second jeep tour, followed by sunset cocktails (usually in the bush) and dinner at the camp.

Great Plains Conservation Safari Sitatunga Island, Botswana

By the end of the fourth day, we’d seen 150 species of mammals and birds, an impressive bucket list for anyone who has never gone on safari. The three-hour drives covered a lot of territory—Duba Plains is 88,000 acres—and the animals generally stayed to themselves in their local habitats.

We had a Lion King moment at Duba, where a dozen species, from elephants to antelope herds to vervet monkeys to a lonesome old Cape Buffalo, grazed close to each other on a watery plain.

I’d assumed the animals were tame-ish since we could get relatively close. Owner, our guide, had a more realistic theory: “If you get out of the jeep, they’ll see you as a two-legged threat, and the situation will be very different.” In other words, dangerous. The rules mandated staying seated and quiet in the vehicle and never approaching the animals on the outskirts of camp.

The first four days were about the animals, but the last three focused on the water. We arrived to Sitatunga by helicopter, a trip highlight since the pilot took a circuitous route across the ever-changing landscape, giving us a chance to see what the Kalahari desert region looks like from the air.

Great Plains Conservation Safari in Botswana.

The boats at Sitatunga were a welcome change from the vehicles, partly because the heat had broken, but mostly they provided a sense of freedom that the land-based safaris couldn’t.

The camp is located on a small lake connected to the Okavango River by narrow channels. We buzzed past monster crocodiles on sandbanks, African Fish Eagles flying overhead, enjoying the cooler air as the 22-foot aluminum boat made its own air conditioning at 30 mph.

As a boater, I loved it because there were no traces of the outside world at Sitatunga—smaller and newer than the other two camps—just a family of hippos in the lake, heads above the water but keeping a good distance in their corner. The water added a layer of serenity.

Great Plains Conservation Sitatunga Private Island

Great Plains’s founders Dereck and Beverly Joubert designed Sitatunga differently than their other camps. It is smaller and more exclusive than the others, with four suites for eight people, defined by a rustic Robinson Crusoe treehouse style.

The Jouberts, longtime National Geographic Explorers at Large photographers and documentary filmmakers, are considered rock stars in the safari world. They’re known outside of Africa for their photography and films. But inside, they’ve established a long list of humanitarian and ecological initiatives that range from saving rhinos to creating all-female ranger groups in local communities that work on anti-poaching initiatives.

Great Plains Conservation Safari Sitatunga Island, Botswana

At Sitatunga, the couple wanted an indoors/outdoors feeling, designing the three A-framed suites (one is a double suite for families with an extended terrace) with large windows facing the lake, and a large dining/social hall with thatched roofs, and bamboo lampshades inspired by the woven-reed fishing baskets used by indigenous Bayei fishermen.

A life-sized wooden lion by a local artist is the centerpiece of the great hall, with a large wooden patio and deck out front to enjoy sunsets over the lake. The serene setting could’ve been out of the 1980’s movie On Golden Pond , except for the hippos in the lake.

Over the next few days, we did several trips up and down the Okavango, including a two-mile walking safari through a riverside reserve where we landed by boat. It felt so freeing to be on foot and not in a jeep. Wildlife was all around (though no big cats—a bonus for the slowest runner in our group) and the quiet landscape and immediacy of the animals made it a special experience.

Great Plains Conservation Safari Sitatunga Island, Botswana, Meals

The apex meal was Thanksgiving dinner, where Sitatunga chef Herold Gaosikelwe served 17 Pilgrim-worthy dishes, family style, on the big dining table. They ranged from parsnip-and-sage soup to roasted chicken with cranberry stuffing, roast potatoes with pine-nut butter, pumpkin pie with a side of chocolate coffee mousse. Chef Herold even made time to whip up a delicious gluten-free chocolate cake for someone in the group who was allergic to wheat.

Great Plains Conservation Safari Sitatunga Island, Botswana,

The dinner was excellent, but the real showstopper was the staff—from maids to managers—who came together at the end to serenade us with Botswanan songs and dances. They weren’t professionals, but were doing their best to ensure we had a Thanksgiving we’d always remember.

Our group, consisting mostly of veteran travel writers, agreed the staff at all the camps were unusual, even among five-star resorts. Their warmth was genuine, the kind that can’t be faked, and they took pride in making sure the stay was a bucket-lister. The best example was when Lizzy Bayani, the manager who accompanied us, brought a hot-water foot bath by helicopter for one of our party whose ankles had swollen in the heat.

While the week had its oohs and ahs, and lots of laughs at meals, the climax came the day before departure. Our ride in the mokoros, the local version of a dugout canoe, was supposed to be the “relaxing” grand finale. But our first view was a bull elephant mounting a female—a sight so rare that, among the three guides, only the leader, Letty, had ever seen it.

Sitatunga Private Island, Great Plains Conservation safari Botswana.

Turns out he was right. The elephants eventually ambled away into the bush and then the guides pushed us, gondola-style, into knee-deep, three-foot-wide channels lined by Papyrus reeds. But when we emerged onto the river, we startled a bloat of hippos. With adults weighing as much as 4,000 pounds, hippos aren’t always the lumbering gentle giants in children’s books, especially when they feel threatened. Rather than waiting for trouble, the lead male goes on the attack.

It’s possible in the low canoes, the big bull mistook us for a crocodile. It didn’t matter. Just 20 yards away, it first made warning noises, opening its muscular jaws to a wide, head-crunching circumference, then disappeared under water, surfacing closer to us. It’s one thing to be in a powerboat where you can push the throttle and speed away. It’s another to be a sitting duck in three feet of water, with nothing but a guide pushing you with a pole.

Great Plains Conservation Safari in Botswana.

That was the only time the trip could’ve gone sideways. It didn’t, but the hippo was so incensed it followed us up into the channel, as the guides fast-poled back to the jeeps. Nobody felt like a casual observer after that close encounter, and one of the group was so pumped with adrenaline she was trembling. Still, what a great “Out of Africa” way to end the week.

Looking back, doing the three camps, with Sitatunga at the end, made the most sense, since the first two provided intensive animal exposure, while the last was more about seeing the area by water.

The area is not known for its wildlife but you can expect to see elephant, hippos, crocs and perhaps even the sitatunga The delta is a watery wilderness with papyrus-lined waterways, riverine forests and seasonal floodplains.

Numerous islands, tranquil lagoons and crystal clear channels are dotted throughout the delta.

Beginning in Angola where it is known as the Cubango river, the Okavango is the fourth longest river system in southern Africa.

The Okavango river continued

It runs southeastward for 1,000 miles (1,600 km).  Further south it forms part of the border between Angola and Namibia.  Before entering Botswana the river drops some 4 metres in a series of rapids known as Popa Falls.  These are situated in Namibia.

Known as the river that does not reach the sea,  it empties into a swamp in the Kalahari desert.   Part of the Okavango’s flow fills Lake Ngami.

Did you know that the delta holds 95% of Botswana’s total surface water. In times of good floods, the river overflows into the Selinda Spillway

Fishing in the Okavango Delta Panhandle

There is marvellous tiger-fishing, and bream that make superb eating, not to mention pike, catfish and other species. Each year, just before the floods when the water is low, thousands of catfish migrate up the main channel of the Delta,  Here they will later spawn and embark on a mass, concerted feeding frenzy.

The Okavango delta consists of 3 main geographically important areas namely, the delta, the panhandle and dryland.

Extending for some 80 kms is the panhandle where the river runs deep and wide.  Vegetation is mainly papyrus stands and palms.

Letovo Schoolcampus, Moscow, Russia

Letovo, the dream came true.

Letovo School is a special school for gifted and motivated children aged 12 to 17. An idea to create the school came from entrepreneur and philanthropist Vadim Moshkovich: ‘My dream was to offer talented children from all over the country access to high-quality education, regardless of their parents’ financial means. This school makes it possible for them to continue their studies at the 10 best universities in the country or at one of the top 50 universities in the world.’

Landscape-inspired design, shape and brickworks Located in Novaya Moskva, southwest of Moscow, the campus sits atop a beautiful plot of land that slopes down to a forest-lined river. Distinctive level variations were applied in and around the school to integrate the architecture into the landscape.

The shape of the large complex brings it down to a human scale for the children: the building appears to dance across the landscape due to its dynamic design. Due to the perspective effect one only ever sees part of the building's full size when walking around, which gives the impression of a refined scale. The building’s contours and flowing curves create surprising indoor and outdoor spaces as well.

To accentuate this curved shapes and to have the building blend into the landscape brick seemed a rather obvious choice. The natural ingredients of brick such as clay, sand water, air and fire gives the school building a natural setting as if the building has been there endlessly. Brick with its solid and sturdy exposure. We choose a sandy light colored brick so in all wheather circumstances it will have a warm glance.

The heart of the school: the central hub

The central hub is the place where day-to-day life at the school unfolds. This flexible, transformable space will be used throughout the day as an informal meeting place. The dance studio on the ground floor can be transformed through a few simple adjustments into a theatre with a stage, a cosy living room or an auditorium that can accommodate 1,000 people for special events such as graduation ceremonies and large celebrations, as seen at the grand opening. This central hub connects the building’s three wings: the art wing, the south wing with science- and general-use rooms and the sports wing.

Learning environment with a diversity in working spaces

Letovo envisioned an innovative and modern take on existing education in Russia. In the spatial design, this perspective translates into space for theoretical education as well as special areas for group work and independent study in the tapered building wings. In the library wing there are silence spaces workshop spaces and a debating room. These are all supportive to the student’s personal development.

Sports programme

In addition to the extended sports outdoor facilities, the indoor supply of sports facilities is substantial. These cover fitness rooms, martial arts rooms, a swimming pool, a small and a large sports hall. Around the sports hall there’s an indoor running track which can be used throughout the year. It is available to school staff and external users as well.

Letovo Schoolcampus, Moscow, Russia / Photography © NARODIZKIY

The interior, also designed by atelier PRO, is tailored to the aims of the ambitious programme. The design of the interior also focuses extensively on the various spaces where students can go to chill and meet up with friends. The extreme cold in this area makes the school’s indoor atmosphere important for relaxation.

Ambitous learning environment

The Russian client has established a private, non-profit school which aims to be the most prestigious school in the country and to offer the best educational programme through a Russion and an IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum. Students’ personal development is paramount, with the school adopting a holistic approach. It is a true learning environment that provides scope for a range of disciplines, areas of interest and recreational opportunities to foster children’s development. This aim is supported by the campus facilities and functions.

Letovo Schoolcampus, Moscow, Russia / Photography © Dmitry Voinov

In December of 2016 the architectural project of school was awarded by Architectural Council of Moscow as the best project in the sphere of education and health care.

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

  • Guide to Russia

What can you do at Moscow City?

  • Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
  • See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow
  • Admire world-class architecture: Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers has distinctive architecture and design

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
  • Completed in 2017
  • Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.
