Safari Zone

safari zone ruby sapphire

A Safari Zone (Japanese: サファリゾーン Safari Zone ) is a special Pokémon preserve where Trainers can enter and participate in the Safari Game (Japanese: サファリゲーム Safari Game ) to catch rare wild Pokémon .

Safari Zones can be found in the following regions :

  • The Safari Zone in Kanto , located north of Fuchsia City .
  • The Safari Zone in Johto , located north of Route 48 beyond the Safari Zone Gate in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver .
  • The Safari Zone in Hoenn , located north of Route 121 .
  • The Great Marsh in Sinnoh , located north of Pastoria City .

The mechanics of the Safari Zones are similar to each other. Most have a $ 500 entry fee, a step limit, a series of distinct areas with different wild Pokémon in each, and 30 Safari Balls , with which players may catch the Pokémon they come upon. The most important of their specific mechanics, however, is that Trainers do not initiate Pokémon battles with the wild Pokémon, but instead must catch them without battling them. The wild Pokémon within Safari Zones are capable of fleeing at any given time.

Differences between games

  • The Johto Safari Zone has no step limit.
  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire , the Hoenn Safari Zone does not use typical Safari Zone mechanics, instead functioning like normal routes .
  • Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! effectively do not have a Safari Zone; the area that used to be the Safari Zone is replaced with GO Park , while the zoo area in front is referred to as the "Safari Zone" instead.

Similar examples

  • Johto 's National Park is somewhat similar to a Safari Zone, being a nature preserve for Pokémon and having a thrice-weekly Bug-Catching Contest which shares several aspects with a Safari Game.
  • Kalos 's Friend Safari area, located in Kiloude City , also bears some similarities with Safari Zones, differing in the available wild Pokémon (which are dependent on the Nintendo 3DS Friend Codes of other players) as well as allowing Poké Balls of any variety as opposed to solely Safari Balls.
  • The Pal Park in all Generation IV games bears some superficial similarities to a Safari Zone, being a special area where only a specific type of Poké Ball can be used, featuring possible Pokémon species that otherwise cannot be found, and where the player cannot battle the Pokémon found there. Additionally, in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver , the Pal Park is placed in Fuchsia City where it replaces the Safari Zone.
  • In Hisui , the Safari Zone was not yet established, but the main gameplay of Pokémon Legends: Arceus is similar to the Safari Zone.

Unova , Alola , Galar , Paldea , and Kitakami have neither a Safari Zone nor anything similar to or resembling a Safari Zone.

  • In the Generation II games, there is some data for a beta Safari Zone in Fuchsia City , but it was ultimately unused.

Start surfing west and you'll come across a town floating on water - Pacifidlog Town. Heal up the Pokemon Center - you can use Fly to get back here anytime now - and check out the southwestern house. The man inside will give you TM27 - Return if your Pokemon likes you very much, or TM21 - Frustration if it doesn't like you at all. There's also a man who will talk about Mirage Island, a special island that appears when you have a " Mirage Island Compatible Pokemon " in your party.

From Pacifidlog, you can surf west through the rapids to Slateport City. There's a few items and trainers along the way, but if you stick to the bottom you'll notice a patch where you can dive - this is part of the Regi Sidequest . Once you're in Slateport City, go to the dock. With your SS Ticket, you can board the SS Tidal to Lilycove City.

Explore all the rooms - some have trainers, some have items. The man in the room on the top right corner will give you TM49 - Snatch. You can rest in the room second from the front left - incidently, the first time you do this, the ferry will arrive at your destination once you wake up, but you may continue to explore. Head downstairs and inspect the rubbish bin in the top left corner to receive a very useful item, Leftovers.

You'll also notice another option when you embark the ship - Battle Tower. This is the same as the Battle Tower in the Crystal version - pick three Pokemon from your team to enter a challenge where you fight seven trainers. Win, and you receive a prize. Lose, and you'll start all over again. There are two levels of difficulty - level 50, and level 100. Once you've visited the Battle Tower, you can now use Fly to get there, rather than by Ferry.

There is one last option with the Ferry, from Lilycove City. If you possess an Eon Ticket, you will be taken to Southern Island, where you will have the chance to catch a lv50 Latios or Latias depending on your version. This event is a Nintendo Promotion, and there is no other legal way to reach the island.

Return to Granite Cave once you have the Mach Bike. On the second level, where you have to use Flash, head north from the ladder and you'll see a mudslide that you can use your Mach Bike to traverse. At the ledge, you'll see heaps of cracked ledges that you'll need to speed over to prevent falling to the next level. There's a Repel down the first ladder, but if you reach the end, you can get a Rare Candy and a hidden Everstone.

This house is situated north of Slateport City, just beyond the entrance to the Bike Path. The aim of the game is to grab the scroll with the password and then reach the door to advance to the end. Once at the end, you'll receive a reward.

When you enter, you'll get a message telling you you're being watched. As soon as the message disappears, a spark appears somewhere in the room - if you examine the location, the Trick Master will appear and allow you to pass to the next part of the puzzle.

The New Mauville Sidequest can be done as soon as you have acquired HM03 - Surf. Go to Mauville City, and you'll see Wattson outside the Pokemon Center - talk to him and you'll receive the Basement Key as well as instructions to shut down the Power Generator. Head south and surf under the Bike Path to the east to reach a small cave.

The entire place is littered with Magnemite, Voltorb, Magneton and Electrode. There are several Blue and Green doors that you can open by stepping on the respective switches. Each switch opens all doors of that colour, but closes all doors of the opposite colour. Your aim is to reach the top right room where the Red Switch is. By stepping on it, you'll switch off the generator. The item to the right is a Thunderstone for your efforts. Report back to Wattson when you're done, and he'll give you TM24 - Thunderbolt.

This quest can be under taken when you have HM03 - Surf, but in order to fully complete it, you also need HM08 - Dive. The Abandoned Ship is found east of Dewford Town on Route 108 (You passed by it on Mr Briney's Boat to Slateport City).

As you enter, if you stand one tile in front of the door, and right up against the wall, the Tuber running around in the room to the left will see you and will walk through the wall to battle you (Yay for programmer absent-mindedness). If you explore this room and the cabins inside, you'll come out with only a Harbor Mail, so head down the stairs. Here you can grab an Escape Rope and a Dive Ball. You'll notice a patch to Dive, but we'll return to that later. Head up the stairs in the left corner.

You can grab a Revive from the cabin inside, and since there's nothing else, head out the door at the bottom and follow the path to the Researcher's Lab. He'll tell you he's looking for a Scanner. Pick up the Storage Key and head back to the second room where there was that place you could Dive. The cabin under the stairs is the Storage Room - use the key to unlock the door and grab TM13 - Ice Beam from inside.

Head into the middle cabin and Dive. Follow the path and you'll emerge in a room with 6 cabins, labelled (1) in the bottom left, and (6) at the top right. Only the doors to Room (3) and (5) are open, but Room (5)'s door is blocked. Head into Room (3) and you'll notice a twinkle signalling a hidden item. This is the Key to Room (1). The item to the left is a Water Stone. Continue visiting each room that you have the key to in order to pick up the key to the next room. Available items are TM18 - Rain Dance and a Luxury Ball.

You'll finally end up in Room (2), where you can grab the Scanner and take it back to the Researcher, who will conveniently tell you to take it to Captain Stern in Slateport City. For your efforts, you'll be able to choose between a Deepseatooth and a Deepseascale, both are evolution items for Clamperl.

To participate in the Safari Zone catching spree, you must have a PokeBlock case - obtain one from the little girl in the Slateport Contest House. For $500, you are given 30 Safari Balls to catch as many Pokemon as you can. The game ends when you run out of time, or Safari Balls. You encounter Wild Pokemon by Surfing or by walking in tall grass, as usual, but you are given different options when a Pokemon is found: Ball - throws a Safari Ball Go Near - raises chance of catching Pokemon, but also raises chance of Pokemon fleeing PokeBlock - throws a PokeBlock from your case that lowers the chance of a Pokemon fleeing Run - Run from the Pokemon There are four areas within the Safari Zone, each has different available Pokemon and encounter rates. Available Pokemon include Doduo, Girafarig, Gloom, Heracross, Natu, Oddish, Phanpy, Pikachu, Pinsir, Rhyhorn, Wobuffet and Xatu, while Psyduck and Golduck can be found by Surfing. You'll see white boxes around the place - if you place PokeBlocks in them, Pokemon in that vicinity will become more common, and your encounter rates will increase. In order to access all parts of the Safari Zone, you must have a Bike - a Mach Bike is needed to get to the northwestern area, while an Acro Bike must be used to get into the northeastern area. You can also pick up two useful items here, a Calcium in the northeast area, TM22 - Solarbeam in the northwest and Max Revive in the southwest.

The areas of Shoal Cave that you can access at any one time is dependant on the tide. The tide times are: High Tide 9am - 3pm, 9pm - 3am; Low Tide 3pm - 9pm, 3am - 9am. On entering Shoal Cave, you'll see a man inside. If you can bring him 4 Shoal Shells and 4 Shoal Salts, he'll give you a Shell Bell, which recovers HP depending on the amount of damage you have just inflicted. Shoal Shells must be collected during High Tide, while Shoal Salts during Low Tide. There's also some hidden areas you can access at Low Tide - make sure you have someone who knows Strength. This is the only place in the world where you can catch Snorunt.

For maps of Shoal Cave, click here

HIGH TIDE : While it's High Tide, you can grab a Big Pearl by going through (A) and working your way right round through to (C), and there's also a Rare Candy on one of the platforms. The blue gems nestled between some pebbles are Shoal Shells. Very straightforward here.

LOW TIDE : There's much more to do at Low Tide. You'll enter the second section through (B) - work your way around through (G), (H) and (F), and you'll end up at (E). You'll see a brown mound on the way, that's Shoal Salt, as well as an Ice Heal. When you head down the ladder labelled (F), you can talk to the man inside to get a Focus Band, and there also a Shoal Salt mound nearby. The remaining two Shoal Salt mounds are through (E), but to access the icy cavern of Shoal Cave, use Strength to the right and head through (I). Here is the only place you'll be able to catch wild Snorunt. There's also a Nevermeltice, and TM07 - Hail.

Ruby/Sapphire - Safari Zone

The Ball option let's you throw one of your many Safari Balls. Always first try this. If the Pokemon doesn't go into the ball, throw a PokeBlock. It makes the Pokemon curious. Other times, the Pokemon completely ignores the PokeBlock, and will watch you carefully. Try the Ball again. If it still doesn not work, Go Near the Pokemon, and throw another Ball. Keep on repeating this process until you catch it. Throw as many balls as you can. You've paid $500 for it anyway.

There are PokeBlock feeders in the grasses. What you might want to do is put a PokeBlock in there, and it will lure Pokemon who like that specific taste towards you.

A Traveler's Guide to the World of Pokémon/Safari Zone

The Safari Zone is an area of the Pokémon video game series. As its name suggests, the player, upon entering, may capture Pokémon in an environment resembling a safari . Although many Pokémon residing in the Safari Zone can be caught elsewhere, some, such as Scyther and Pinsir , are exclusive to this area only.

It also includes 1, 10, or 30 Safari Balls possible. If you pay the fee of 500 Poké-dollars you get 30 Safari Balls. If you have less than that you will get 10 Safari Balls. If you don't have any money you get 1 Safari Ball.

Unlike most areas containing wild Pokémon, the Safari Zone places several restrictions on the player.

  • A fee of 500 Pokémon dollars is required to enter.
  • A "time limit" of 500 steps (600 in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen )
  • The player is only allowed to use the 30 provided Safari Balls to capture Pokémon. In addition, owned Pokémon are not allowed to participate in confrontations, and the player must rely on a limited amount of commands, such as baiting and throwing rocks, to interact.

Red/Blue/Yellow

The Safari Zone in the Red, Blue, and Yellow versions of Pokémon is located in the northern part of Fuchsia City . It contains four areas, each containing different species of Pokémon.

When encountering a wild Pokémon, a Pokémon from the player's party is not sent out. Instead, the player has the option to run away, offer bait, throw rocks, or attempt to capture the Pokémon by using a Safari Ball. Offering bait will make the Pokémon less likely to run away, but decrease the chance of catching it by making the ball miss more often. Throwing rocks will hurt the Pokémon, making it easier to catch but increasing the chance of it running away.

It is also the vital piece of the puzzle of Glitch City . Also there was a way to steal safari balls and using them for own use.

Gold/Silver/Crystal

In the Gold, Silver , and Crystal versions of the game, the Safari Zone is absent. The entrance still remains at its usual location in the north of Fuchsia City, but the player is unable to enter it. A " beta " version of a Safari Zone map is included in the programming of the game, leading to the speculation that it might have been removed due to the discovery of so many glitches in the R/B/Y versions. However, it is also likely it was simply scrapped due to time restraints. The unfinished Safari Zone may still be accessed through GameShark or another cheating device. [1]

Ruby/Sapphire

In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire , the Safari Zone made a reappearance. It is located about halfway through Route 121, and while it is similar to the R/B/Y Safari Zone, it introduces several new key differences. Only 500 steps and 30 Safari Balls are permitted, as in the old version, and the player is still restricted to engaging the Pokémon themselves by luring, distracting, capturing, or running away. However, instead of using unlimited "baiting," the player must now use a Pokéblock chosen from their own inventory. Instead of throwing rocks, the player is given the choice to "get closer".

Other changes include the addition of Pokéblock feeders, on which you can place a Pokéblock and wait for Pokémon to appear, rather than look for them. Also, some areas are inaccessible unless the player has a particular bike. The Mach Bike is needed to reach the Northwest corner of the map, while the Northeast corner of the map requires you to have the Acro Bike. Each area contains a different set of Pokémon.

Finally, the player cannot save while inside the Safari Zone. However, quitting at any time is available by choosing the "RETIRE" option on the Start menu or talking to the man by the exit.

The player can still use Pokémon abilities, such as Surf and Rock Smash, inside the Safari Zone, along with the new move, "Sweet Scent," which can be used to draw wild Pokémon without walking. Also, fishing or turning in circles without moving will not count against your time quota.

The Safari Zone is also present in Pokémon Emerald, and is the same as Ruby and Sapphire's; however, it now has a new section to the right of the entrance that will open after defeating the Elite Four. This new area has a north and a south section, each filled with Pokémon from the Johto region (this is the only place in the game in which some Pokémon can be caught without trading).

Diamond and Pearl

Renamed Great Marsh (though the in-game map still refers to it as the Safari Zone), and located near Pastoria City . The player can travel by train to access each area of the Great Marsh, although some areas are interconnected without train. There are six areas in the Great Marsh most of which are covered with mud. You will get stuck in the mud and to get out, simply move the character around. The ability to "move closer" has changed to "throw mud", which functions much like the "throw rocks" of the earlier games, and "throw bait" also returns from the older games, while bait feeders were removed.

How to Catch Pokémon in Safari Zone

Last Updated: May 21, 2023 References

In the Pokémon series of games, Safari Zones are special unique areas in each game where rare Pokémon that don't appear anywhere else in the game can be caught. Safari Zones always operate with different rules than the rest of the game world - instead of battling Pokémon in the wild like you normally would, you'll need to carefully use baits and deterrents to get Pokémon to let down their guards so you can catch them. This can be quite challenging, so knowing the ins and outs of Safari Zone mechanics in each game is vital for success.

Navigating the Safari Zone

Fighting and capturing pokémon.

Step 1 Be aware of the modified combat mechanics for the Safari Zone.

  • Note that the "run away" option functions as normal, so we won't be discussing it.

Step 2 Use bait to make a Pokémon less likely to run.

  • However, using bait will also make the Pokémon more difficult to catch in a safari ball. Thus, striking a balance here can be difficult — the longer you get the Pokémon to stick around for, the harder it will be to actually capture it.

Step 3 Use rocks to make a Pokémon easier to catch.

  • However, there's an important downside: using rocks will also make the Pokémon more likely to run away. In fact, after taking more than a few rocks, a Pokémon is virtually guaranteed to run away — some will exit the battle sooner. Thus, once again, using rocks means striking a delicate balance as you try to capture your Pokémon.

Step 4 Use safari balls to attempt to capture Pokémon.

  • Note that you only have a limited supply of safari balls (depending on the game, usually 30), so save them for Pokémon you want to catch. It's generally the best use of your time to use your safari balls for Pokémon that are only found in the safari zone.

Step 5 In general, go for capture attempts after one or two rock throws.

  • Note that safari balls are weak compared to the pokéballs you can use in the rest of the game. In addition to this, especially rare Safari Zone Pokémon are extra-difficult to catch. [2] X Research source This can lead to some very frustrating situations — for instance, it can easily take 20 or more tries to catch an exceptionally rare Pokémon like Clefairy.

General Tips

Step 1 Use your limited steps carefully.

  • Bulbapedia, an online user-supported Pokémon encyclopedia, has extensive information about each game's Safari Zone, including maps and guides covering where to look for the Pokémon in each zone. See the Bulbapedia Safari Zone article to get started. [3] X Research source
  • Note that there is no step limit in the Safari Zone in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. [4] X Research source

Step 2 Be prepared to pay the entrance fee.

  • Across all of the games in the series, the entrance fee has stayed the same: 500 P . This includes the Great Marsh in Pokémon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, which is not technically a Safari Zone but behaves very similarly.
  • One smart strategy is to save your game before you enter the Safari Zone. This way, if you don't catch any Pokémon you want, you can re-load to avoid paying the entrance fee again.

Step 3 Consider exploring the math of capture mechanics.

  • As an example of the sort of equation used in the games to determine whether certain Pokémon are captured, consider the equation from the Generation games (Gold and Silver): a = max((3 × HP max - 2 × HP current ) × rate modified / (3 × HP max ), 1) + bonus status where HP max is the Pokémon's maximum HP, HP current is the Pokémon's current HP, rate modified is the catch rate of the Pokémon modified by the ball used (every Pokémon and every ball modifies this in a certain way, and bonus status is the modifier for any status condition (sleep and freeze are 10, all others are 0). [5] X Research source When you throw a ball, a random number between 0 and 255 is generated. If this number is less than or equal to a, the Pokémon is caught.

Catching Pokémon in the Kanto Safari Zone

In the following sections, we'll highlight the rare Pokémon in each Safari zone and give specific advice where applicable. To keep these tables to a reasonable size, we've included only the rarest Pokémon in each area — for exhaustive information, consult the Safari Zone guides at Serebii.net and Bulbapedia.

Catching Pokémon in the Hoenn Safari Zone

Note that the Generation 4 Hoenn Safari Zone (Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire) won't be covered here as the player is allowed to engage in ordinary battles in this zone.

Catching Pokémon in the Sinnoh Great Marsh

Though Sinnoh's Pokémon preserve has a different name, it functions virtually identically to Safari Zones in other regions.

Catching Pokémon in the Johto Safari Zone

Note that the Safari Zone is not available in Generation 2 (Gold/Silver) but is available in the Generation IV games that visit Johto (HeartGold/SoulSilver). Note also that in this Safari Zone the player can arrange the six different areas in any arrangement desired. Finally, many of the areas in the Johto Safari Zones have Pokémon appearance rates that are not yet known — only data for the known areas has been included. See Bulbapedia for more information. Expert Q&A

  • Once again, the data in the tables above only deals with the most noteworthy Pokémon in each area. In fact, many more Pokémon appear in each Safari Zone. Thanks Helpful 3 Not Helpful 3
  • Remember — you have a limited number of steps inside the Safari Zone, not a limited amount of time. Thus, you can take as long as you like if you control your movement carefully. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 4

Excellent app! Actually, in my opinion, the best one! It has a really great salat reminder, it helps you strengthen your Imaan and every day there's a Dua' for you! It has a lot of different Dua's in it, for every situation and it contains the Holy Qur'an in Arabic and translated! You can also read the Qur'an without knowing Arabic so it's the best for me! Masha Allah this app is amazing!
