A Traveler's Guide to the World of Pokémon/Safari Zone

The Safari Zone is an area of the Pokémon video game series. As its name suggests, the player, upon entering, may capture Pokémon in an environment resembling a safari . Although many Pokémon residing in the Safari Zone can be caught elsewhere, some, such as Scyther and Pinsir , are exclusive to this area only.

It also includes 1, 10, or 30 Safari Balls possible. If you pay the fee of 500 Poké-dollars you get 30 Safari Balls. If you have less than that you will get 10 Safari Balls. If you don't have any money you get 1 Safari Ball.

Unlike most areas containing wild Pokémon, the Safari Zone places several restrictions on the player.

  • A fee of 500 Pokémon dollars is required to enter.
  • A "time limit" of 500 steps (600 in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen )
  • The player is only allowed to use the 30 provided Safari Balls to capture Pokémon. In addition, owned Pokémon are not allowed to participate in confrontations, and the player must rely on a limited amount of commands, such as baiting and throwing rocks, to interact.
  • 1 Red/Blue/Yellow
  • 2 Gold/Silver/Crystal
  • 3.1 Emerald
  • 4 Diamond and Pearl

Red/Blue/Yellow

The Safari Zone in the Red, Blue, and Yellow versions of Pokémon is located in the northern part of Fuchsia City . It contains four areas, each containing different species of Pokémon.

When encountering a wild Pokémon, a Pokémon from the player's party is not sent out. Instead, the player has the option to run away, offer bait, throw rocks, or attempt to capture the Pokémon by using a Safari Ball. Offering bait will make the Pokémon less likely to run away, but decrease the chance of catching it by making the ball miss more often. Throwing rocks will hurt the Pokémon, making it easier to catch but increasing the chance of it running away.

It is also the vital piece of the puzzle of Glitch City . Also there was a way to steal safari balls and using them for own use.

Gold/Silver/Crystal

In the Gold, Silver , and Crystal versions of the game, the Safari Zone is absent. The entrance still remains at its usual location in the north of Fuchsia City, but the player is unable to enter it. A " beta " version of a Safari Zone map is included in the programming of the game, leading to the speculation that it might have been removed due to the discovery of so many glitches in the R/B/Y versions. However, it is also likely it was simply scrapped due to time restraints. The unfinished Safari Zone may still be accessed through GameShark or another cheating device. [1]

Ruby/Sapphire

In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire , the Safari Zone made a reappearance. It is located about halfway through Route 121, and while it is similar to the R/B/Y Safari Zone, it introduces several new key differences. Only 500 steps and 30 Safari Balls are permitted, as in the old version, and the player is still restricted to engaging the Pokémon themselves by luring, distracting, capturing, or running away. However, instead of using unlimited "baiting," the player must now use a Pokéblock chosen from their own inventory. Instead of throwing rocks, the player is given the choice to "get closer".

Other changes include the addition of Pokéblock feeders, on which you can place a Pokéblock and wait for Pokémon to appear, rather than look for them. Also, some areas are inaccessible unless the player has a particular bike. The Mach Bike is needed to reach the Northwest corner of the map, while the Northeast corner of the map requires you to have the Acro Bike. Each area contains a different set of Pokémon.

Finally, the player cannot save while inside the Safari Zone. However, quitting at any time is available by choosing the "RETIRE" option on the Start menu or talking to the man by the exit.

The player can still use Pokémon abilities, such as Surf and Rock Smash, inside the Safari Zone, along with the new move, "Sweet Scent," which can be used to draw wild Pokémon without walking. Also, fishing or turning in circles without moving will not count against your time quota.

The Safari Zone is also present in Pokémon Emerald, and is the same as Ruby and Sapphire's; however, it now has a new section to the right of the entrance that will open after defeating the Elite Four. This new area has a north and a south section, each filled with Pokémon from the Johto region (this is the only place in the game in which some Pokémon can be caught without trading).

Diamond and Pearl

Renamed Great Marsh (though the in-game map still refers to it as the Safari Zone), and located near Pastoria City . The player can travel by train to access each area of the Great Marsh, although some areas are interconnected without train. There are six areas in the Great Marsh most of which are covered with mud. You will get stuck in the mud and to get out, simply move the character around. The ability to "move closer" has changed to "throw mud", which functions much like the "throw rocks" of the earlier games, and "throw bait" also returns from the older games, while bait feeders were removed.

One of the great features of Pokemon R/B/Y, was definitely the Safari Zone. Unfortunately, this feature was unavailable in G/S/C, but in R/S a whole new Safari Zone is open on Route 121, just west of Lilycove City.

When you meet a Pokemon you can do 1 of 4 things:

If you choose any of the first 3 options, there is a chance that the wild Pokemon will run away. It doesn't flee, then you have a chance to capture it. The Pokemon may be easier to capture if you are closer to it, or if it is feeding on a Pokéblock.

It is also possible to place Pokéblocks in special feeders, which spread around the Safari Zone. The Pokéblocks draw Pokemon which like the taste, meaning that it helps to lure Pokemon of a certain nature which you might want.

To fully explore the Safari Zone needs at least 2 different visits, as certain areas can only be reached on a certain bike. If you want to explore the North-West, then take the Mach Bike with you. If you want to explore the North-East, then you need the Acro Bike. You may also need HM03 (Surf) to help you venture around the Safari Zone, as some of the items found in the Safari Zone, can only be gotten by surfing across lakes. You can find a Calcium, a Max Revive and TM22 (Solarbeam), all hidden in there.

The Safari Zone is home to many rare Pokemon, which aren't found anywhere else in Hoenn. These are the full lists:

Hoenn Route 121

Hoenn Route 121

Route 121 (Japanese: 121番道路 Route 121 ) is a route in central Hoenn , connecting Lilycove City , Route 120 , Route 122 , and Hoenn's Safari Zone .

Route description

From Route 120, Route 121 proceeds east, passing a pair of Trainers (three Trainers in Pokémon Emerald ), two grass patches and a soft soil patch containing four varieties of Berries . The path passes through another grass patch before coming to a three-way intersection. The eastern path, blocked by a cut -able tree, is a shortcut that leads to the Safari Zone entrance. Trainers who lack the ability to use cut must head south from this intersection to a four-way intersection down two flights of stairs from the previous junction. To the west is a narrow, winding path leading to another Cut-able tree and a Secret Base location. South of here is the dock that leads to Route 122, which is a water route . Route 121, however, continues east.

After passing through another grass patch, Route 121 meets the shortcut path once again. From this point, Trainers can head northwest, ascending two flights of stairs, to arrive at the Safari Zone.

The main path continues east into a heavily fenced area. After entering another patch of grass, the route turns to the north and comes to another intersection populated by grass. The west path leads to a Trainer and an item, as well as a tiny patch of grass. The east path leads to another Trainer and another small grass patch. At the Trainer, however, the main path of the route turns south before curving to the east and passing through either a grass patch (Ruby/Sapphire) or the path of two Trainers (Emerald). East of the obstacle, a hole in the fence to the south leads to another soft soil patch with two Nanab Berry plants.

Route 121 curves to the northeast as it enters Lilycove.

Route 121 appeared in The Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon VIII , where Roxanne , Brawly , and Wallace fought against Groudon there in order to stop it from advancing through Hoenn , with Roxanne having her Nosepass use Block to prevent it from getting away. However, the three Gym Leaders were then attacked by the three Admins of Team Magma , who took them to Lilycove City and started battling them to keep them from interfering with Groudon.

Start surfing west and you'll come across a town floating on water - Pacifidlog Town. Heal up the Pokemon Center - you can use Fly to get back here anytime now - and check out the southwestern house. The man inside will give you TM27 - Return if your Pokemon likes you very much, or TM21 - Frustration if it doesn't like you at all. There's also a man who will talk about Mirage Island, a special island that appears when you have a " Mirage Island Compatible Pokemon " in your party.

From Pacifidlog, you can surf west through the rapids to Slateport City. There's a few items and trainers along the way, but if you stick to the bottom you'll notice a patch where you can dive - this is part of the Regi Sidequest . Once you're in Slateport City, go to the dock. With your SS Ticket, you can board the SS Tidal to Lilycove City.

Explore all the rooms - some have trainers, some have items. The man in the room on the top right corner will give you TM49 - Snatch. You can rest in the room second from the front left - incidently, the first time you do this, the ferry will arrive at your destination once you wake up, but you may continue to explore. Head downstairs and inspect the rubbish bin in the top left corner to receive a very useful item, Leftovers.

You'll also notice another option when you embark the ship - Battle Tower. This is the same as the Battle Tower in the Crystal version - pick three Pokemon from your team to enter a challenge where you fight seven trainers. Win, and you receive a prize. Lose, and you'll start all over again. There are two levels of difficulty - level 50, and level 100. Once you've visited the Battle Tower, you can now use Fly to get there, rather than by Ferry.

There is one last option with the Ferry, from Lilycove City. If you possess an Eon Ticket, you will be taken to Southern Island, where you will have the chance to catch a lv50 Latios or Latias depending on your version. This event is a Nintendo Promotion, and there is no other legal way to reach the island.

Return to Granite Cave once you have the Mach Bike. On the second level, where you have to use Flash, head north from the ladder and you'll see a mudslide that you can use your Mach Bike to traverse. At the ledge, you'll see heaps of cracked ledges that you'll need to speed over to prevent falling to the next level. There's a Repel down the first ladder, but if you reach the end, you can get a Rare Candy and a hidden Everstone.

This house is situated north of Slateport City, just beyond the entrance to the Bike Path. The aim of the game is to grab the scroll with the password and then reach the door to advance to the end. Once at the end, you'll receive a reward.

When you enter, you'll get a message telling you you're being watched. As soon as the message disappears, a spark appears somewhere in the room - if you examine the location, the Trick Master will appear and allow you to pass to the next part of the puzzle.

The New Mauville Sidequest can be done as soon as you have acquired HM03 - Surf. Go to Mauville City, and you'll see Wattson outside the Pokemon Center - talk to him and you'll receive the Basement Key as well as instructions to shut down the Power Generator. Head south and surf under the Bike Path to the east to reach a small cave.

The entire place is littered with Magnemite, Voltorb, Magneton and Electrode. There are several Blue and Green doors that you can open by stepping on the respective switches. Each switch opens all doors of that colour, but closes all doors of the opposite colour. Your aim is to reach the top right room where the Red Switch is. By stepping on it, you'll switch off the generator. The item to the right is a Thunderstone for your efforts. Report back to Wattson when you're done, and he'll give you TM24 - Thunderbolt.

This quest can be under taken when you have HM03 - Surf, but in order to fully complete it, you also need HM08 - Dive. The Abandoned Ship is found east of Dewford Town on Route 108 (You passed by it on Mr Briney's Boat to Slateport City).

As you enter, if you stand one tile in front of the door, and right up against the wall, the Tuber running around in the room to the left will see you and will walk through the wall to battle you (Yay for programmer absent-mindedness). If you explore this room and the cabins inside, you'll come out with only a Harbor Mail, so head down the stairs. Here you can grab an Escape Rope and a Dive Ball. You'll notice a patch to Dive, but we'll return to that later. Head up the stairs in the left corner.

You can grab a Revive from the cabin inside, and since there's nothing else, head out the door at the bottom and follow the path to the Researcher's Lab. He'll tell you he's looking for a Scanner. Pick up the Storage Key and head back to the second room where there was that place you could Dive. The cabin under the stairs is the Storage Room - use the key to unlock the door and grab TM13 - Ice Beam from inside.

Head into the middle cabin and Dive. Follow the path and you'll emerge in a room with 6 cabins, labelled (1) in the bottom left, and (6) at the top right. Only the doors to Room (3) and (5) are open, but Room (5)'s door is blocked. Head into Room (3) and you'll notice a twinkle signalling a hidden item. This is the Key to Room (1). The item to the left is a Water Stone. Continue visiting each room that you have the key to in order to pick up the key to the next room. Available items are TM18 - Rain Dance and a Luxury Ball.

You'll finally end up in Room (2), where you can grab the Scanner and take it back to the Researcher, who will conveniently tell you to take it to Captain Stern in Slateport City. For your efforts, you'll be able to choose between a Deepseatooth and a Deepseascale, both are evolution items for Clamperl.

To participate in the Safari Zone catching spree, you must have a PokeBlock case - obtain one from the little girl in the Slateport Contest House. For $500, you are given 30 Safari Balls to catch as many Pokemon as you can. The game ends when you run out of time, or Safari Balls. You encounter Wild Pokemon by Surfing or by walking in tall grass, as usual, but you are given different options when a Pokemon is found: Ball - throws a Safari Ball Go Near - raises chance of catching Pokemon, but also raises chance of Pokemon fleeing PokeBlock - throws a PokeBlock from your case that lowers the chance of a Pokemon fleeing Run - Run from the Pokemon There are four areas within the Safari Zone, each has different available Pokemon and encounter rates. Available Pokemon include Doduo, Girafarig, Gloom, Heracross, Natu, Oddish, Phanpy, Pikachu, Pinsir, Rhyhorn, Wobuffet and Xatu, while Psyduck and Golduck can be found by Surfing. You'll see white boxes around the place - if you place PokeBlocks in them, Pokemon in that vicinity will become more common, and your encounter rates will increase. In order to access all parts of the Safari Zone, you must have a Bike - a Mach Bike is needed to get to the northwestern area, while an Acro Bike must be used to get into the northeastern area. You can also pick up two useful items here, a Calcium in the northeast area, TM22 - Solarbeam in the northwest and Max Revive in the southwest.

For a map of the entire Safari Zone, click here

The areas of Shoal Cave that you can access at any one time is dependant on the tide. The tide times are: High Tide 9am - 3pm, 9pm - 3am; Low Tide 3pm - 9pm, 3am - 9am. On entering Shoal Cave, you'll see a man inside. If you can bring him 4 Shoal Shells and 4 Shoal Salts, he'll give you a Shell Bell, which recovers HP depending on the amount of damage you have just inflicted. Shoal Shells must be collected during High Tide, while Shoal Salts during Low Tide. There's also some hidden areas you can access at Low Tide - make sure you have someone who knows Strength. This is the only place in the world where you can catch Snorunt.

For maps of Shoal Cave, click here

HIGH TIDE : While it's High Tide, you can grab a Big Pearl by going through (A) and working your way right round through to (C), and there's also a Rare Candy on one of the platforms. The blue gems nestled between some pebbles are Shoal Shells. Very straightforward here.

LOW TIDE : There's much more to do at Low Tide. You'll enter the second section through (B) - work your way around through (G), (H) and (F), and you'll end up at (E). You'll see a brown mound on the way, that's Shoal Salt, as well as an Ice Heal. When you head down the ladder labelled (F), you can talk to the man inside to get a Focus Band, and there also a Shoal Salt mound nearby. The remaining two Shoal Salt mounds are through (E), but to access the icy cavern of Shoal Cave, use Strength to the right and head through (I). Here is the only place you'll be able to catch wild Snorunt. There's also a Nevermeltice, and TM07 - Hail.

Ruby/Sapphire - Safari Zone

The Ball option let's you throw one of your many Safari Balls. Always first try this. If the Pokemon doesn't go into the ball, throw a PokeBlock. It makes the Pokemon curious. Other times, the Pokemon completely ignores the PokeBlock, and will watch you carefully. Try the Ball again. If it still doesn not work, Go Near the Pokemon, and throw another Ball. Keep on repeating this process until you catch it. Throw as many balls as you can. You've paid $500 for it anyway.

There are PokeBlock feeders in the grasses. What you might want to do is put a PokeBlock in there, and it will lure Pokemon who like that specific taste towards you.

Everything You Need to Know About Girafarig in Pokmon: Scarlet & Violet

Girafarig is an unusual Pokémon even by Game Freak's standards. It's a palindrome giraffe in both name and appearance — it has two faces, one on its head and the other on its tail. Girafarig debuted in Pokémon Gold & Silver with a 30% spawn rate on Route 43 but was excluded from Pokémon Crystal . In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, & Emerald , Girafarig can be found only in the Safari Zone. The two-faced giraffe regularly appeared in nearly every Pokémon game until the seventh generation, when it had to be transferred from a previous game. Girafarig was excluded from Pokémon Sword & Shield but returned to Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl during the eighth generation.

Girafarig is one of only six Normal/Psychic-type Pokémon in the franchise, and the only one to have existed before Pokémon Black & White . This rare type combination offers immunity to the Ghost-type attacks that Psychic-type Pokémon would be weak against in exchange for losing resistance against Fighting-type attacks. In Pokémon Gold & Silver , Girafarig is known for being one of six Pokémon that can learn Baton Pass naturally.

Girafarig in Pokmon Scarlet & Violet

A normal/psychic-type pokmon with average stats across the board, 10 best pokmon in gold, silver, & crystal, ranked.

The Pokmon series is known for its iconic Pokmon through the years, and Gold, Silver, and Crystal have some winners, like Tyranitar and Ho-Oh.

Girafarig doesn't stand out in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet like it used to in the series. Since Pokémon Sword & Shield , Girafarig no longer learns Zen Headbutt naturally at Level 32, as it's been replaced by a new exclusive move: Twin Beam — a 40 base power Psychic-type attack that hits twice, and the only Psychic-type multi-hit attack in the game. Girafarig can still learn Zen Headbutt from TM059, so it ultimately lost nothing. When using a Girafarig in the main party, it can learn Assurance at Level 10 to answer opposing Psychic and Ghost-type Pokémon that resist one of its STABs early on.

Girafarig can be found in West Province Area Three and Area Zero. They also have fixed spawns in West Province Area Two and can appear in 3-Star Raid Battles. In the Indigo Disk DLC, it can also be found in the Savanna Biome. Girafarig spawns in the grass in Paldea, and spawns in prairies, bamboo, and caves in the Terarium. Girafarig has a Medium Fast experience growth and requires one million experience points to reach Level 100. It grants two Sp. Attack Effort Values when defeated, and has a 50/50 gender ratio, meaning both males and females spawn at the same frequency.

Girafarig has decent abilities, but they're nothing noteworthy — Inner Focus prevents it from flinching or being affected by Intimidate, Early Bird causes it to wake up after only a single turn of sleep, and Sap Sipper renders it immune to all Grass-type attacks and powder moves while boosting its Attack by one stage instead. Girafarig has a Capture Rate of 60, and a female Girafarig's brown spots near its hind legs are smaller than a male's. A Girafarig egg requires up to 2,560 steps to hatch from conception and belongs in the Field Egg Group.

Farigiraf Is the Only Pokmon With Armor Tail

Its functionally similar to queenly majesty and dazzling, though, everything you need to know about mankey in pokmon: scarlet & violet.

Mankey is extremely quick to anger. It could be docile one second, then infuriated the next.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet introduces a much-needed evolution for Girafarig: Farigiraf. To evolve, Girafarig must level up while knowing Twin Beam. Normally, this occurs at Level 32, but a Girafarig caught at a high level may need to be reminded of this move to evolve. Farigiraf's base Speed drops by 25, but the rest of its stats are boosted — especially its Sp. Attack and HP. In fact, Farigiraf's maximum HP is 100 points higher than Girafarig's at Level 100. The closest thing to a drawback is that Farigiraf weighs nearly four times as much as Girafarig. This means Low Kick and Grass Knot have a base power of 100 against Farigiraf, while they only have a base power of 60 against Girafarig.

Farigiraf's Pokédex entries justify these statistical changes — both of its brain waves are now synchronized, so its psychic power is stronger, and the hardened tail's new position protects its vulnerable main head while rendering it slower to react. Its two normal Abilities reinforce this integration, which replaces Girafarig's Inner Focus and Early Bird — Cud Chew causes it to consume the same berry it consumed in the previous turn once, while Armor Tail nullifies opposing priority attacks against it and its allies. Farigiraf is the only Pokémon other than Tauros' Paldean Forms to have access to Cud Chew, and the only one that doesn't have Cud Chew as a Hidden Ability. Armor Tail is Farigiraf's exclusive ability, though Tsareena's Queenly Majesty and Bruxish's Dazzling are functionally identical.

The easiest way to acquire Farigiraf is to evolve Girafarig, but it can be found in Area Zero and can appear in 4 and 6-Star Raid Battles. In the Indigo Disk DLC, it can be found in the Savanna Biome. Like its pre-evolution, Farigiraf spawns in the grass in Paldea, and spawns in prairies and bamboo in the Terarium. Most of Farigiraf's internal stats are identical to Girafarig's, but its Capture Rate is 45, and it grants 3 HP Effort Values when defeated. This change from Sp. Attack to HP is due to its highest base stat being its HP upon evolution.

How Can They Be Used Competitively?

Farigiraf is the sturdiest priority blocker, 15 strongest pokmon from generation nine.

Pokmon Scarlet & Violet's Paldea region expanded the Pokdex to over 1000 species of Pokmon some of which are incredibly powerful, like Miraidon.

Since Girafarig has an evolution, it can now make use of Eviolite to bolster its below-average defenses. With the Early Bird ability, Rest is far more viable now, since it will only skip its next turn. The second move should be dedicated to buffing its average Sp. Attack with Nasty Plot or Calm Mind. Its last two moves should be offensive — one of which is a Psychic-type attack and the other to offer coverage. Stored Power is especially potent after a few buffs, but poses no immediate threat at first. Girafarig can also run a mixed offensive build with Sap Sipper, but it won't be able to use Rest with this ability. This should be replaced by a third attack, even if it's Girafarig's only physical attack.

Farigiraf has a lower Speed, so it can run a Trick Room build quite well, especially with Armor Tail to thwart opposing priority attacks like Fake Out and Prankster Taunt. Its other three moves can be offensive or supportive — a buffing move and two attacks, or Wish/Protect support to ensure longevity for the team. A Fairy Tera Type resists the Dark and Bug-type attacks that both Pokémon are weak against. Ogerpon is an excellent partner for Farigiraf in Double Battles, which can redirect attacks with Follow Me to ensure Trick Room goes off.

If using the Cud Chew ability, Farigiraf can exploit a few berries to make the most of it — Sitrus Berries restore up to half its HP, Custap Berries give it two priority attacks to overcome its slow speed, and Kee Berries buff its Defense by two stages to complement its Amnesia or Calm Mind. In a Double Battle, a Fling user can bypass the usual HP percentage threshold to chuck any stat-raising Berry for a two-stage buff, or even a Lansat Berry to ensure all of Farigiraf's attacks are critical hits after both turns raise its critical hit ratio by four stages.

A mixed attacker build may appreciate a Starf Berry, which buffs a random stat by two stages normally, then buffs a random stat again by another two stages the next turn. While the randomization is hard to plan around, Stored Power will become stronger regardless of the buff. The move Protect ensures that Farigiraf gains Cud Chew's additional berry effect, and is highly useful in Double Battles anyway. Since veteran players are likely to think a Farigiraf in Doubles will have Armor Tail, they may avoid using Fake Out to interrupt the strategy until it's too late.

Since both Girafarig and Farigiraf can have the Sap Sipper ability, it's possible to exploit this in Double Battles with the only Grass-type attack that affects both opponents and the ally — Petal Blizzard. Tsareena is an excellent partner for this strategy, as it boasts an impressive 120 base Attack to spam Petal Blizzard and the aforementioned Queenly Majesty ability. With the Sap Sipper ability, Girafarig/Farigiraf's Attack will increase one stage each turn Petal Blizzard is used, while Tsareena can utilize a Choice item to maximize potential damage output. Alternatively, Leftovers or Assault Vest can keep Tsareena alive longer. A Girafarig in Doubles can support its partner with Helping Hand or nullify an opponent's Protect and/or Tera Blast with Imprison, while a Farigiraf can run Trailblaze and Hyper Voice with a Throat Spray to buff its Speed and Sp. Attack to get Stored Power up to an acceptable level.
