Can you visit Florence by bike ? Yes, it is possible and this small group bike tour is the perfect way to do it. You can get to narrow streets and pedestrian areas that tour buses and rental cars can’t!

The perfect city for biking

Much of Florence’s historic centre is pedestrianised so it’s actually a great place to cycle. Join this Firenze bike tour to see way more than you would in an average walking tour as you spend less time getting from place to place! You’ll be accompanied by an experienced and knowledgeable English-speaking guide so there’s no need to worry about getting lost. And they know all the places that the tour buses can’t get to!

Visit all of Florence’s major attractions from two wheels

You’ll ride through the narrow streets of the historic centre and the Oltrarno District, where you’ll get a chance to see the city’s most amazing monuments such as the Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria and Uffizi Square - though you won’t go inside any of the monuments. You’ll also find some unknown and off-the-beaten-track spots from which to admire the city, which are great for photo opportunities. If you have any questions, just ask your guide who will regale you with fun facts and historical explanations whenever you fancy.

Discover the “Cradle of the Renaissance” and enjoy a gelato along the way

Most people who have done this tour agree that it’s the most fun way to discover Florence - and it saves you a lot of time. Of course, the tour is not rushed and there’s even time to stop for a gelato, the price of which is included in the tour. There are options for bikers of any age, as well as families, and couples can even choose a tandem bike. Most of the itinerary is flat and there is a little riding in streets with traffic, so some confidence in riding a bike is required.

Important Information

The itinerary is flat and not challenging but please note that a normal biking skill is required. Most of the itinerary is in the predestrian area, but also some riding in streets with little traffic is involved. Confidence in riding a bike is required. How to pick the best bike tours in Florence

Ebike at Duomo in Florence Italy at night

A classic bike tour of Florence by day vs an electric bike tour of Florence at night

Before I tell you about the best bike tours in Florence I took on my visit to Italy and the fantastic times I had riding around this great city, I have a confession: this is not how I pictured myself cycling in Tuscany.

In my dreams I was grinding up and soaring down undulating hills in the countryside, putting my winter spin class training to use. But dreams don’t always come true. Because sometimes you arrive at your destination and find that there is a heat wave. That the “rolling” hills are a lot steeper than you imagined. And that, frankly, you’d rather see rural Tuscany from inside an air-conditioned Fiat.

Lucky for me, there are many easy and fun bike tours in Florence you can sign up for a few hours or a whole day. Here I’m reviewing two great tours to help you choose the right one for you, whether you’re looking for a classic daytime bike tour of Florence or considering an electric bike tour of Florence at night.

Crowds on Ponte Vecchio in Florence Italy

Why you should sign up for a bike tour in Florence

Bikes are such a great way to get around a new city. You can see way more in less time than on foot, get closer to the place than from a bus or cab, and of course the physical exercise is a healthy way to work off all that gelato and pizza. With a small group bike tour, you can also meet others staying in the same city at the same time, which is especially great when you are travelling solo.

In Florence, a bike tour is also one way to avoid the intense crowds on the sidewalks. (Sometimes, see below.) And a bike ride along the Arno River is one of life’s pleasures.

Most of the bike tours in Florence are between 2 and 3 hours long and follow a similar route around the city, taking you to the main sights — the piazzas, the bridges, e.g., but using hidden alleyways and stopping at unusual historical spots. Many include pitstops for gelato! The main difference between them is the time of day they are leaving, the type of bike and what’s included.

I took two different bike tours in Florence—one night tour on an ebike, and one day tour on a regular cruising bike . Here’s what I found and what I recommend!

336*280

An ebike tour to Piazzale Michelangelo

The first reason I signed up for a bike tour in Florence was the heat. My girlfriend and I were finding it a challenge to see as much as we wanted with that August sun beating down on us during the day. So when browsing available bike tours in Florence I spotted a listing for “ E-Bike Night Tour with stunning view from Piazzale Michelangelo” and knew that would a lot more comfortable!

Piazzale Michelangelo is a scenic lookout just south of the city centre on the south bank of the Arno River. It’s easy to spot from below—there’s a bronze copy of Michelangelo’s David you can see from afar, plus crowds of people enjoying the views. Most people drive up. Or hike up. But we biked up!

Our ebike tour of Florence started in the early evening in a cute alleyway in the heart of the city at a bike rental shop. This was actually my first time getting on an e-bike, so I was relieved that they gave us beginner instructions and time to try out the ebike and get used to it before taking off on the tour. Then zoom-zoom, away we went!

An e-bike tour of Florence is a great option for people travelling together with different physical abilities. Because each person controls the amount of electric “assist” on their own bike. And you can cover more ground — and more hills!

English 300*250

Following our guide along the river using bike paths, then crossing over the Ponte di San Niccolò, we arrived at the bottom of a long and winding tree-lined road. With the ebike, it was an easy climb to the Piazzale Michelangelo and quickly we were looking down at all of Florence.

What a scene! A live band played some Italian songs I do not know but the crowds certainly did—there was singing, and dancing, and such happy good vibes. Our tour stopped long enough to could grab a snack or drink from food trucks, or just stand at the edge of the plaza and enjoy the sweeping views.

Bike tours in Florence stop at the major historic sites.

It was just as fun to ride the ebike back down into the city. Our guide took us across a different bridge and through the narrow streets of Florence, which are quite flat. I turned off the electric assist and enjoyed the feeling of pedalling past such glorious sites as the Basilica of Santa Croce and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, with its famous red duomo. Along the way, our guide shared vivid stories of the history of Florence, including its long-time rivalry with Siena .

i bike florence original city bike tour

Taking a bike tour of Florence at night was a really special experience. This is an extremely popular and crowded city, but it didn’t feel that way at night. And doing it on an ebike meant I could save my stamina for the next day’s sightseeing and shopping.

This tour lasts about 2 hours and cost us 55Euro. They have bike helmets for adults and children. And it does include a gelato! It runs nightly from May to September. Check the dates and rates here.

I recommend this tour for anyone who: needs or wants a break from the summer heat, wants to try an ebike in a safe environment with an experienced bike guide, is with friends or family who can’t ride a traditional bike, wants to see a lot of Florence at night, or is too busy with activities during the day.

I have no negatives to this tour but if you’re looking for more of a physical challenge or want to visit sites outside the city centre, this might not be the best one for you.

Green Bike in an alleyway in Florence Italy

A classic bike tour of Florence

I still wanted to experience one of the classic bike tours of Florence so the next day I also signed up with Florencetown’s I Bike Florence Original Bike Tour.

This time, I’d be going out during the day on a cruiser bike. These comfortable upright rides sometimes called Dutch Bikes have just one gear, and are meant for leisurely cycling on mostly flat terrain. They also have a cute vintage style, with a front basket.

Because of the heat situation, I chose the earliest tour, leaving at 10am. I joined a group of several couples from different European countries. We were all cycling enthusiasts, but you don’t need a lot of experience you just need the basics to enjoy this tour —be comfortable riding a bicycle slowly, and near city traffic.

This bike tour passes many of the most important sites in central Florence, so requires a bit more patience with crowds. Florence has many useful bike lanes along the river, and across the bridges, but in the narrow streets of the core, I was thankful for our tour guide, to navigate us safely using less busy areas.

300*250

Once again, we had a guide with great storytelling abilities. Even though we passed by monuments I’d already visited on the ebike tour, or with my friend, I enjoyed learning new details from this guide, and seeing things from a different perspective.

This bike tour of Florence also took us to the south side of the Arno, into Oltrarno . This neighbourhood has its own historic sites, like Palazzo Pitti, but is best known today as the “cool” part of the city, with small boutiques and bohemian bars. We stopped here for one of the best features of this tour: gelato! This sweet treat is included in the price, and the guide helped us choose from the many traditional flavours. So good!

Gelato in Italy

Unfortunately for me, the icy gelato was not enough to combat the sickness I was feeling from what was already by noon a punishing heat. I had to cut my ride short. They were kind and supportive of my situation. Because I was confident in the route back to the tour operator’s shop I took my leave and quickly returned the bike before retreating indoors to my hotel. It’s a bit embarrassing to admit, considering how easy this ride is, but I mention it to explain that Florencetown (and most tour operators) do have procedures and options if for any reason you can’t continue with your bike ride.

This tour lasts 2.5 hours and costs 45Euros. They run up to three times per day in high season, but also offer tours all year-round.

I recommend this tour for anyone who: just arrived in Florence and wants a good orientation of the major areas and sites, loves riding a cruiser bike, is visiting in the off season, or travelling with children (they provide child seats for kids up to 3 for free, and provide discounts for kids aged 4 to 12).

One caveat to my high recommendation is that we did encounter some crowded areas, including crossing the famous Ponte Vecchio and a few of the side streets. I ride in Toronto traffic regularly so this didn’t bother me but if you are uncomfortable riding a bike through crowds, consider if that’s right for you.

Florence Italy

Some general tips for bike tours

Small group guided bike tours are a fun and convenient way to see great cities. But there are some things to look out for to make sure you pick a good one.

  • You want the right bike, and a good quality bike. Look for tour operators that specify what kind of bike you’ll be riding.
  • If you’re going to be out for any length of time they should also ask you for your height, to make sure they have the right size set aside for you.
  • Arrive on time, or even early, to test out the bike they give you before taking off on the ride. Just a few seconds ride will tell you that the brakes are working, the seat is properly adjusted, the tires are pumped, etc. Do not be shy to ask for these things to be fixed. The guides can do this quickly.
  • One reality of the business is that they get new bikes at the start of the season. So the further away you are from that, the more likely the bikes may be a bit beat up. I took a city bike tour once in November and we left 15 minutes late because it took a while to locate functioning bikes for everyone. It wasn’t the worst problem, but be aware.
  • Your guide should be carrying basic repair supplies . I took a tour once where two different bikes got flat tires, while we were away from the city centre in a park. Our guide was carrying replacement tubes and and a repair kit, so we weren’t delayed too badly. That said…
  • Don’t book something immediately after your bike tour. Delays like those mentioned above can happen and you may find yourself running short. If you do have a reservation or ticket for something, do let the guide know at the start of the tour.

Endless Possibilities

Personally, I book these at the last minute, so that I can pick the right day and time based on the weather. In a big city, there are many bike tour options so the risk of not finding one is low, especially if you’re travelling alone.

Finally, be aware that these city sightseeing bike tours do not enter any of the sights. And that they don’t involve a lot of actual cycling. Ha. These are more like a walking tour—you bike from one stop to another, take some pictures, hear some stories, have a snack, then bike to the next one. If that sounds like a very nice time, be sure to book a bike tour on your next city adventure!

Happy riding!

After exploring the historic center, you’ll cross the river to the charming Oltrarno neighborhood for one of the city’s best gelatos!

There's a lot to see in Italy's Renaissance city, so discovering the highlights by bike makes it easy to see the best of Florence in just a few hours. After meeting your guide in Piazza Mentana, you'll hop on a professionally-maintained bicycle to begin your journey through the city. Cycling at a gentle pace on largely flat terrain, you'll pass by some of Florence's most famous sites as well as smaller piazzas and side streets that many tourists never see.

At the end of your tour, you'll cycle across the Arno River to the tranquil Oltrarno, where you'll see a different side of Florence and visit one of the city's best gelato shops before returning to the historic center.

Florence Half Day Bike Tour Description

Your 2.5-hour tour includes:

Comfortable city bike rental

Bike helmet and basket included

Guided tour of Florence's historical center and Oltrarno neighborhood

Tasty gelato at one of our favorite spots in the city

Friendly English-speaking local guide

Maximum group size of 12

Begin Your Journey in Central Florence

Your day begins in Piazza Mentana, just off the Arno River in the heart of Florence. After your bike has been chosen and adjusted for you, your local guide will lead you off on a fun and carefully-chosen route around the city, stopping for photos and to tell stories of this enchanting city along the way.

The ride is relatively flat and easy, and helmets and baskets are available along with child seats or kids bikes if needed.

Best of Florence by Bike

Head through the alleys and cobblestone streets lined by Renaissance-era buildings, taking in famous sites such as Ponte Vecchio bridge. As you discover the highlights of Florence over the next couple of hours, you'll see where Dante, Michelangelo, and Da Vinci lived, worked, and created some of the world's most important art and literature.

Piazza della Signoria, Piazza Santa Croce, and Florence's Great Squares

Your guide will take you through some of the great public squares of Florence, including the beautiful Piazza della Signoria, home to the Uffizi Gallery and Palazzo Vecchio. Though not as tall as the Dome nearby, the great bell tower of Palazzo Vecchio is a symbol of Florence and the powerful Medici family. In the square you'll see great statues by Donatello, Giambologna, and a copy of Michelangelo's famous David.

Later, in Piazza Santa Croce, take in the hustle and bustle of local life in Florence. The perfect place to people-watch while drinking a cappuccino, it is also ideal to take in by bike. See the statue dedicated to the father of the Italian language Dante, who is buried at the basilica located in the square.

Brunelleschi's Dome and the Duomo

You'll continue past the towering dome that makes Florence's skyline so recognizable worldwide. Filippo Brunelleschi's massive cupola that sits atop the Duomo is still the largest masonry dome ever built. Learn about the impressive feat of architecture as you pedal through Piazza del Duomo. Beyond the dome, you'll stop to admire the intricate stone work of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore and the Baptistry at the center of Florence's most visited square.

Palazzo Pitti and the Oltrarno Neighborhood

Away from the crowds in the historical center, enjoy the tranquility of the Oltrarno neighborhood. Located directly across the Arno river, this chic part of Florence is perfect for a leisurely cycle and is also home to the grand Pitti Palace. This grand Renaissance palace dates back to the 13th century and was once a home of the Medici family, but now stands as one of the city's largest museums. From this side of the river, you'll have wonderful views of the city and can take photos of the Florentine skyline worthy of a frame.

Cool Off with Delicious Gelato!

Before heading back to center of the city, you'll be treated to an authentic Florentine gelato from one of our favorite spots in the city. Choose your perfect combination of flavors then sit and enjoy the creamy deliciousness!

Returning to Piazza Mentana, you'll wave goodbye to your guide and set off to explore more of the city yourself.

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY

Downhill to Florence – A day to remember!

Our family of 4 enjoyed a great ride through the Tuscan country side, into the beautiful city of Florence. The pick up and drop off service was great; the bikes were in top shape and rode easily. Our guide, Elena, was helpful, informative and ever so friendly. We had a great lunch in Fiesole, stopped for many pictures of the countryside and city below, and just had a wonderful time. It was truly a day to remember. Thank you Bike Florence&Tuscany! When we come back, we will look you up again!

One of the top highlights of our Tuscany trip!

My husband and I are active and were looking for a more adventurous way to explore Tuscany. Bike Florence was the perfect fit to satisfy my hubby (a cyclist) and me a wino. It was the best of both worlds! We selected the Chianti bike tasting and enjoyed a half day of wonderful cycling in the beautiful Tuscan hillside. I cannot say enough about Piero and Eleana and their wonderful hospitality. From booking the tour to helping with directions and selecting excellent wineries, we felt extremely taken care of. Both were gracious, witty and focused on safety. We had an amazing experience that we’ll treasure for a long time to come. If you’re looking to explore Tuscany on bike, you simply can’t go wrong with Bike Florence! Thanks again Piero and Elena for taking such good care of us. We’ll spread the word about our great experience to all our Texas friends! Grazie mille!

Great tour and excellent way to see Tuscany

Our bike tour from San Gimignano to Siena, led by Elena and Simone was over way to quickly. 6 of us, ranging from 75 to 17 years of age, enjoyed a wonderful day with beautiful sights, great gelato and wine tasting. Our guides were very informative and very sensitive and accommodated everyone’s abilities. They were very friendly and professional too. We loved it all! Thank you for a fun-filled day! Linda

It is more than a bike tour, it’s an experience for all involved!

Best biking tour in Italy. Piero and his team took us on 2 tours one in Chianti and one in Valdarno region. We had the best time ever and will never forget. It is more than a bike tour it’s an experience for all involved! The support team and van help all levels of bikers to enjoy. Run don’t walk to this experience! Brian and Maree

Chianti bike tasting tour – Bike Florence&Tuscany

My husband and I choose the Chianti bike tasting ride October 3rd 2017…I must say it was hard to choose, they all look so good! We were delighted to have Elena as our host and guide. She is BEYOND engaging, so informative and the best guide and expert on Tuscan towns and Italy. The day was gorgeous and the stops delightful. There were just the two of us on the ride and we felt so special. I would highly recommend that you use this company…Italians running an Italian company that are expert riders themselves. We will definitely ride with them next year, can’t wait!

Excellent tour of beautiful Tuscany!

My partner and I did the full day San Gimignano to Siena bike tour yesterday with Elena and we had a great day! Elena picked us up near to where we are staying and she was wonderfully friendly and chatty, pointing out interesting things to us as we drove to pick up the other couple doing the tour. We drove to San Gimignano and reached it before the crowds – it is a beautiful old town on top of a hill with amazing views of the surrounding area. Elena also recommended a delicious gelato place to us ? We then drove a little further and started the bike tour. The bikes were light weight and had lots of gear choices so riding them was very easy, there are also helmets provided. Elena drove ahead of us so we knew the route and we could catch up at our own pace. We were lucky to have beautiful sunshine and the scenery was very picturesque ? I don’t cycle a lot so I did struggle a bit with the hills – please be aware that as it is Tuscany there are some hills on the ride, but the hills are great as you get the best views on top and coming down. If the hills are too much you can always hop in the van with Elena for a while to rest ? We really enjoyed the stop at the wine tasting and the afternoon in Siena, Elena recommended a great place for lunch. We really enjoyed our day as we felt we saw some lovely little towns, amazing views and Tuscan countryside. Thank you! Read more on TripAdvisor

Relaxing break from city sight seeing

I would highly recommend this experience. You not only get to see the beautiful countryside, but you really get a real taste of the Chianti region of Tuscany.

Great way to see parts of Floreonce and Tuscany that you would never see otherwise!

We went on 2 trips with Piero (second with his wife Elena). 1. Day trip of Florence. Saw Florence in whole new light- allowed us to explore Florence from 1 end to the other, avoiding the usual “tourist” areas (Duomo, Palazzo Signoria, Ponte Vecchio) that we had already done on foot. Only the 3 of us, yet Piero still did tour, incredibly infromative, adapted tour to our needs (stopped when we felt need), great lunch at hidden restaurant below Piazzale Michelangelo. Had a geat time! 2. Tuscany wine tour. This time did with son as well (initally not very enthusiastic, but even he admitted worth every penny). I am a regular cyclist, but others in group (total 6) “weekend warriors”. Tuscany can be challenging cycling, but Piero selcted route that everyone in group could do (picked us up at local drop off, since we were stayig in San Gimignano), drove to start of route, mostly downhill thereafter- abslolutely incredible countryside. Wine tasting incredible, espcially at Monteriggioni where we had wine tasting with matched food for lunch- informative. Shown how diferent local wines complement diferent foods. My wife (not usually a wine lover) “never going to drink cheap wine again”. Again Piero + Elena adapted tour to our needs. Again had great time- worth every Euro! Only downside- being from Canada, not practical to ship a case home!

One of the great experiences I’ve had…ever!

My wife and I did the “Downhill to Florence” bike tour this week with Piero (riding along along in van) and Elena leading the bike pack. Start 2,600 feet up in a remote monastery and ride 22 miles down into the center of Florence through back roads and trails with just the most amazing vistas

Good food, good wine & all whilst cycling through the amazing scenery of Tuscany!

We were really looking forward to our ride out into the Tuscan hills having never been to the area and spending much of the later part of our trip in cities, and we were far from disappointed! Piero & Elena were warm & welcoming, kept in regular contact upto the day and ensured we knew exactly where we going and what we were doing on the morning of our ride. We got to see the wonderful countryside of the Chianti region, on a gentle September Sunday whilst drinking fabulous wine, eating wonderful local produce & meeting new people…….what more could you ask for? It was defiantly one of the highlights of our Italian adventure and would recommend it.

Best day of our holiday, the only way to see Florence!

We were 2 families (4adults and 5 kids). Piero and Elena (our guides) were perfect! They prepared everything perfectly in advance, created a custom route for family with kids – adjusted the trip based on all of our ability, and overall created a perfect day. We were able to see all of the major sites of Florence without the feeling of fighting crowds, waiting in line…..

Biking experience in Florence

If you are remotely fit and want a unique experience biking around the unconventional Florence (or an escape day from crowds), then I strongly recommend the Bike in Florence&Tuscany city tour…

Even better the second time! – Bike Florence & Tuscany

Last year, I did the San Gimignano to Siena bike tour with the beautiful and amazing Elena. I had such a wonderful time that i immediately planned to do it again this year, on my birthday, as I couldn’t think of a better way to spend the day than on this wonderful trip! Well let me just say it was even better than I remembered! Not only is the scenery absolutely breathtaking, and the towns visited (San Gimignano, Monteriggioni and Siena) absolutely beautiful, but the hospitality, generosity and kindness of your hosts, Elena and Piero, are nothing short of unforgettable. I had not mentioned to Elena that it was my birthday, however she realised and so planned a few extra surprises for me – one, that the bike tour would be just myself and my sister (amazing considering it was June, high season!) and secondly, organising an amazing wine tasting for us in Monteriggioni (not normally an inclusion in this ride)!! This was such a wonderful and completely unexpected surprise to us, and I was so touched at her caring and generosity! I was completely blown away and really couldn’t thank her enough. Needless to say, I had an absolutely wonderful and unforgettable birthday thanks to Elena. The scenery on this ride is unbeatable, and you have ample time in each town to explore, buy souvenirs and have a coffee or gelato (or lunch) as you wish. Elena provides maps and great information on what to see and do in each place, and also plenty of water and snacks as you bike. This is just such a great way to see and experience Tuscany with locals who love Tuscany and love to bike!! The bikes themselves are fabulous – super light but sturdy – and with full van support there is no issue if you become tired. As should be obvious, I absolutely love this company and am planning on many more rides with them in the future. Thank you so much Elena and Piero for yet more amazing and unforgettable memories, and for the best birthday ever! Rosalinde

Most amazing day!!

My fiancé and I did the bike tour for wine lovers! It was gorgeous!! Piero and Elena were very fun and helpful and focused on what they could do so we would have a great time.

Fantastic Family bike tour

I have nothing but good things to say about Bike Florence&Tuscany. Four of us did a day trip ride San Gimignano to Siena on November the 2nd. Piero treated us as a private group so we could enjoy the entire day as a family trip! Elena led the group and the ride was fabulous. The roads and scenery were beautiful, colors were typical of Tuscan fall and traffic was light. We always felt safe and Piero did a good job supporting us with the van. The day starts with a good hour for visiting San Gimignano, the so-called Medieval Manhattan. The first part of the ride ends in Monteriggioni, the small, well-preserved medieval village we met biking towards Siena. After a brief stop to see the village the ride continued, ending near Siena. The guys took us to the city entrance by van to avoid us having to face the busy traffic and.. for a little rest before the long walk around Siena. The whole BF&T team was extremely accommodating, kind, and knowledgable. The bikes themselves were top notch. I would recommend Bike Florence&Tuscany to everyone: this was one of the highlights of our whole Italian vacation for my family, who had come to Florence to see me after a long absence! Thank you Piero&Elena for making all this come true!

San Gimignano to Siena Exceeded our expectations!

It all started with a convenient pick up by our fabulous hosts Elena and Piero in Florence. From there we had a pleasant (and informative) drive to the historic town of San Gimignano — amazing! Our family of four then enjoyed a bike ride though the Tuscan countryside. We rode at our own pace, stopping for photographs and snacks. The riding was all done on quiet (almost no traffic), picturesque country roads. After completing our ride, we were treated to a wine and cheese tasting in the walled village of Monteriggioni. From there we were driven a short distance to Siena (in the super comfortable support van) where we were able to spend some time exploring this incredibly beautiful Tuscan city. Things to note: We completed our tour in December and despite it being winter, it was very pleasant. Thanks again to Elena and Piero for a memorable experience. Craig, Myf and Family

Thank you Piero and Elena, great trip

We booked for the “Downhill to Florence”. It was late in the season, November, so many others had closed their bike tours. We lucked out and found Pierro and Elana. Others have described the trip really well.. It is a well thought out perfect itinerary. My husband and I had a great…

A perfect day in Tuscany

Buona sera Piero, I just wanted to thank you for a “perfect” day in Tuscany. The whole family enjoyed the biking and wine tasting immensely! The choices of villages, roads, wineries and the fantastic restaurant in Monterrigioni could not have been better. You and your staff, Elena and Simone made everyone feel at ease which enhanced the experience even more…

An amazing day and memories for a lifetime!

My family and I just returned from our 2 week Italy holiday and can say that our day spent with Piero, Elena and Costa was by far our most amazing experience! My review starts at the beginning…
