Works well when wifi works

The app worked great as long as the wifi worked on the ship. We went with our family and my youngest spent some time in the daycare. I really liked that the app showed if she was checked in or out of daycare and by whom. If my sister, wife or someone else on the list checked her out it showed the name of who checked her in or out and at what time. It also had the hours the daycare was open. Another cool part of the app was the scheduling and reserving events. When you reserve an event in person or in the app, carnival automatically pushes the scheduled event to everyone’s app and lets them know they have a reservation for a certain time and where it is. The app will remind you 15 minutes before the event to give you enough time to make it on time. I scheduled a dinner at the steakhouse (which I highly recommend) for a party of 12. (I had to go to the steakhouse to make the reservation since you can’t do more than 9 people within the app. I could’ve called too but I like to do things in person sometimes). A few minutes after reserving everyone, it pushed a notification to everyone’s app letting them know they have a reservation. You can also see what other people in your party at interested in attending. It a nice app as long as you are connected to their wifi. To be clear you do NOT need to purchase the wifi plan to use this. You simply connect to their on board wifi and it functions with all features. The messaging feature is nice too.

Carnival Sunrise July 16-21

This was our first cruise in 17 years. My husband and I got to bring our 16 year old daughter and her friend for their first ever cruise. So much is different (in a good way) and so many things the same- also in a good way. First, I love how dining is set up now with a range of time to eat, but still get the same waiter. I was worried about that because we all know they make up part of our fun by getting to know us. I loved that we could see the menu ahead of time on the hub and check in. I also loved the Hub with the events and details of the day and how they are categorized by food/drinks/ shopping/etc…. It was a great way to plan your day ahead of time (My last cruise was still with a piece of paper slid under your door nightly that you had less time to plan your day AND had to keep track of all day!) Last, but not least, I loved to see a lot of the old things that made me fall in love with Carnival when I was 13- every single employee is friendly, says hello and smiles; they work hard to make every person’s vacation relaxing while working hard to keep the ship clean; the fun, music and tricks at dinners, along with the personalization of them learning our names (cabin stewards also); the photographers to catch those special moments, and just all the fun with the staff and fellow cruisers. It’s exactly what I told my daughter it would be like. Thanks for another great one Carnival- it won’t be another 17 years before our next one!

Carnival cruise Horizon Christmas 2022

Despite all the craziness we went thur to make our first Cruise it was amazing from the time we boarded to time we got off. Everyone was nice in helping us get what we needed , just to let you know it was a snow storm & extremely cold we flew Southwest Airlines only to sit on plane for 4hrs before we left to our next destination which was Atlanta made it there & they cancel us till in the morning got tickets to fly into Ft Lauradale that morning so we slept in airport, now it’s time to board but not enough workers so we been delayed for two hrs now mind you we have to be on that ship by 3pm we get to the next airport waiting on luggage none so we put in a claim & we knew it was nothing but the devil we said we getting on this ship we came to far & been thur too much, we made it y’all with nothing , but when I say Carnival staff was amazing they made us feel like we had nothing to worry about. We had a amazing time with Cookie omg Cookie was the highlight of the ship for me, and the workers at guest services April, she rock took good care of us, our guy Antonio who took care of our room everyday was just awesome. In the Victoria secret store the young lady precilia was so helpful got Toiletries for us free. God put us just where we needed to be with the Best cruise ship & workers again Thank you all for everything, we are planning to bring our family on the next one. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts James & Velma

Large fight breaks out on Carnival cruise ship, video footage shows

A large fight broke out on a Carnival Cruise Line ship, video footage shared on social media shows.

  • The incident occurred in the buffet area of the Carnival Paradise around 3 a.m. on the final day of a Caribbean cruise in early June.
  • Security personnel intervened and escorted one group out of the room and the other group exited the opposite direction, a passenger said.

A video posted to YouTube on Saturday by passenger Nick Richardson appears to show a group of fellow guests throwing chairs, tackling each other and hitting one another in the buffet area of the Carnival Paradise. Richardson previously shared the video on TikTok, but the social media platform removed the clip , he told USA TODAY.

The 43-year-old happened upon the conflict when he went in search of pizza around 3 a.m. on the final day of a Caribbean cruise in early June. “I woke up because I was starving,” said Richardson, who lives in Clearwater, Florida. He saw security guards speaking to groups of guests.

The passengers were “talking trash to each other” in the eatery before the clash escalated, though he wasn’t sure how the initial argument began. Richardson estimated that roughly 10 to 15 people participated in the physical fight.

Security personnel intervened and escorted one group out of the room and the other group exited the opposite direction, he said. The video shows chairs overturned and dishes strewn across the floor and tables – with at least one plate broken – in the aftermath.

“Carnival Paradise’s security team intervened in an incident that took place on June 6,” spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an emailed statement. “As is our policy, we will not tolerate such behavior and the guests involved were fined and will not sail on Carnival Cruise Line again.”

Richardson stressed the fight was an “isolated incident” and that he thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the trip, which marked his first cruise. He even booked another sailing with Carnival shortly after returning home.

“The security and just all of the staff there, they were very, very good,” he said.

The incident comes after a Carnival guest pleaded guilty in February to assaulting another passenger , at one point smashing a glass in their face.

Carnival Cruise Line quietly made drastic dining change permanent

Most people who cruise enjoy the all-you-can-eat aspect of cruising.

As part of your cruise fare on cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean and MSC you get access to the main dining room, a buffet, a pizza place, and usually another restaurant or two.

It's not necessarily about gluttony. Instead, it's a chance to have someone else make your meals, clear your dishes and ensure you have everything you need at mealtime

Related: Carnival takes stand on scooters, elevators, and rude passengers

On the other hand, for many passengers a cruise is also a chance to indulge. You're on vacation so it's okay, maybe even expected, that you're going to eat a little more — maybe a lot more — than you usually do.

Some cruisers love Royal Caribbean's Windjammer Buffet and Carnival's Lido Buffet. Both cruise lines serve breakfast, lunch and dinner on their buffets and offer a lot of choices.

There are, of course, differences.

Royal Caribbean offers made-to-order omelets in the Windjammer during breakfast. Carnival used to do that but now its buffet offers premade omelets (although you can get one made to order in the main dining room).

Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next (or your first) cruise.

Another noteworthy difference: Carnival serves only what most Americans would consider a breakfast staple — bacon — every other day. That was supposed to be a temporary change but it has quietly become permanent.

Carnival Cruise has a bacon problem

Carnival has always had a bacon problem on its buffets.

Before the Covid pandemic, the cruise line used to have a worker serving the bacon rather than letting passengers take it on their own as they could every other item on the buffet.

Presumably, it did that because passengers could not be trusted to serve themselves. After the cruise line's Covid shutdown, Carnival said that it was having trouble sourcing bacon and it made a pretty major change.

"Like many companies in the hospitality sector, we are having some supply chain sourcing challenges, and bacon is one such item," Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald said in August 2021. "We have notified our guests that we will serve bacon on alternating days at our Lido breakfast buffet ... and our guests have been very understanding and cooperative."

The language used then implied that the change would be temporary, but during his July 11 video Heald confirmed that bacon was still being served in the Lido Buffet on an every-other-day basis.

"Bacon is served every other day from Lido," Heald shared. "I'll see what we can do about getting that back."

In this video, he cited "food-waste reasons" as to why the cruise line has kept the every-other-day schedule.

"But it's available every day in the dining room," he added.

Be the first to see the best deals on cruises, special sailings, and more. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter.

Carnival passengers push back on breakfast

Heald brought up the bacon issue in response to a passenger suggesting that Carnival's buffet does not have enough items to choose from.

He listed the long list of available items but conceded that it had removed biscuits and gravy because guests complained about them.

He said that perhaps the cruise line, which now works with the celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, would consider bringing that offering back. Many passengers commented on the Lido breakfast offerings, and most were positive.

"Insane! I am having breakfast as we speak and the choices are amazing," Dee Homes wrote.

Some passengers, however, did question the bacon rationing.

"Bring back the daily bacon on the buffet! What’s the reasoning behind that?" Jody Candella Studt posted.

Heald did, of course, cite food waste as the reason, but that seems like a hard one to believe.

Some passengers were less nice about it.

"Boo bacon every other day. The sausage is nasty," shared Catherine M. Sardeson.

I sailed on Carnival's new cruise ship. See all of its amenities — and why some are better than its pricier competitors

  • I spent four nights on the new  Carnival Firenze cruise ship  in May.
  • The ship has plenty of free activities alongside enticing up-charged options.
  • Take a look at all the amenities on Carnival's new Italian-themed vessel.

Insider Today

Carnival's new Firenze cruise ship is filled with upcharged options. But if you look past them, you'll be pleasantly surprised by their complimentary activities.

The company's second Italy-themed ship came highly anticipated. In early April, Firenze's naming ceremony "triggered a step up in bookings," Josh Weinstein, the president and CEO of Carnival Cruise Line's parent company, Carnival Corp, told analysts in late June.

Two weeks after the ceremony, Carnival Firenze set sail on its maiden voyage from its homeport in Long Beach, California, marking the 27th vessel to join the cruise line's fleet.

This boost in bookings might not come as a surprise after seeing its prices.

New cruise ships generally command an inflated fare. But it seems the new 5,245-guest Firenze ignored this tradition, with 2024 fares currently starting at almost $360 per person for a four-night cruise.

Not too bad , given all of its amenities.

Firenze is more than just another towel animal-toting Carnival cruise.

In 2022, Carnival acquired Firenze and its sister ship from Costa Cruises. Firenze then underwent a two-month refresh to be outfitted with the "Carnival Fun Italian Style" theme.

If you're an American who loves campy European-themed venues — think a cheaper version of the Venetian in Las Vegas — Firenze could feel like an Italian getaway. The theme is hard to miss, from the white statues to the giant photos of Florence, Italy.

I went on Firenze's four-night cruise about two weeks after its maiden voyage.

I previously wrote a less-than-glowing review of Carnival Firenze , although I was impressed with the vessel's complimentary activities, a rarity on many popular cruises.

Norwegian's newer ships, for example, have $10 mini-golf courses and VR arcades that cost $29 for an hour of play. Similarly, Royal Caribbean's new ultra-giant, ultra-popular Icon of the Seas has a $49-per-person ropes course that can be completed in less than a minute.

Carnival Firenze also has a mini-golf and ropes course — but they're both free, albeit not as exciting or modern as the cruise line's competitors.

Unfortunately, the arcade isn't free. But you'd be hard-pressed to find a complimentary one anywhere.

Like Icon of the Seas, brave guests must be harnessed in before walking Firenze's ropes course.

But unlike Royal Caribbean's adrenaline-pumping walkway, Firenze's course takes several minutes to complete. And while it's less showy and dramatic than Icon's, it is free to go on as many times as you'd like — and for that, a better deal.

Want to keep the adrenaline going? Carnival's new ship has waterslides near the children's water playground.

Nearby, there's also cornhole, a giant chess set, and an outdoor sports court for an afternoon of shooting hoops. If you're lucky, you can also claim one of the open-air foosball tables.

If not, there's an indoor foosball table near the ping pong table and a collection of board games and books.

Speaking of indoor-outdoor options, Firenze has two pools, one outside and another under a glass roof.

The latter is also home to the makeshift nighttime movie theater, so long as viewers are OK with paying $4 for popcorn and the background sound of screaming children at the pool.

If you want to escape the kids, Firenze has the obligatory cruise ship spa, casino, and boutiques.

Or go to the adult-only outdoor lounge outfitted with rows of lounge seats, two hot tubs, and, most importantly, no children in sight. It's also where you'll also find the ship's salad bar — one of Firenze's 15 dining options.

Of the 16 restaurants, nine venues are complimentary

But there are some caveats.

Some included options, like the pizza kiosk and buffet, have up-charged items. Others, like the aforementioned salad bar and grill stand, remained frustratingly closed until the last day of my cruise.

But if you don't consider these stipulations, Firenze's free-to-upcharged restaurant ratio isn't abnormal. About half of competitor Icon of the Seas' 21 dining venues also cost extra.

Carnival Firenze's specialty options include an empanada stand and classics like sushi, teppanyaki, and Italian restaurants.

Travelers ready to splurge on food could pay as little as $1.50 for an empanada or almost $50 for a steakhouse dinner.

Dining at the free buffet but eyeing the up-charged chicken wings? They'll be $5 for six pieces. Having breakfast at the free main dining room? A fresh juice will be $5.

Want a dinner lobster roll from the seafood shack? It'll be another $18.

During the day, the seafood shack serves as a complimentary chicken stand, joining eight other free options.

Cruisers can live out their "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" dreams at the Guy Fieri-branded burger counter, where heavy accouterments like fried mozzarella slabs and onion rings are commonplace.

Or, head up a deck to Il Mercato for grab-and-go Italian sandwiches.

Firenze has two main dining rooms for a more formal sit-down dinner. Just note that the dinner buffet serves the same menu as these restaurants. And while the food is fine, it's not great — and I did find a piece of plastic hidden in my pasta.

As with any mass-market cruise ship, alcohol isn't free.

Cocktails are about $13, while beers and seltzers are about $9. But if you can't cruise without booze (it is Carnival, after all), the new ship has plenty of venues for your needs.

Bars like Piano Bar 88 and Tuscan Lounge have live music.

Amari offers options that fit the ship's Italian theme, like aperitifs, digestives, and Negroni sbagliatos ("stunnin'!").

Meanwhile, Heroes Tribute Bar and Lounge is great for guests who want to sip a beer, watch sports, and surround themselves in American military garb.

If you enjoy doing karaoke, you'll love karaoke night at the stylish and contemporary Moda Bar and Lounge.

And if you crave Aperol spritzes the moment the sun comes out, you could find yourself frequently visiting the bubbly-forward, new-to-brand Frizzante.

While not technically a bar, the coffee shop also sells boozy milkshakes and floats for almost $12.

But then again, everything at JavaBlue Cafe has a price tag, from the $4.50 latte to the icy $7.25 frappe. And if you want a sweet treat with your pick-me-up, it'll be $4 for a doughnut or cupcake.

(If you don't want to pay for caffeine, the buffet has free black coffee, Bigelow's green tea, and Lipton tea.)

It wouldn't be a cruise without live entertainment, either.

The atrium hosts musicians and singers dressed in Venice Carnival — or "Eyes Wide Shut" — style masks, while the smaller Limelight Lounge is the go-to for stand-up comedy. There's also an interactive "Deal or No Deal" game show, although participation costs $25.

But if we're talking about traditional theater shows, my four-night cruise included the cheesy "Dear Future Husband" song-and-dance production and the interactive "What's Age Got To Do With It?" game show.

If laughter from the crowd indicates success, the game show — which sources participants from the crowd — was a hit.

A show where half the players are children is sure to be entertaining.

Is the entertainment better on Norwegian and Royal Caribbean’s newest ships? Yes.

carnival cruise sign in

Does Carnival Firenze have as many pools as its competitors' latest vessels? No.

But is Firenze's mini-golf and ropes course free? Yes.

Plus, with four-night voyages starting at almost $90 a night, Firenze's 2024 itineraries are both shorter and cheaper than several other new cruise ships on the market. (Norwegian Viva's cheapest 2024 itinerary is more than $1,520 per person for an 11-day sailing, while Icon of the Seas starts at almost $1,770 per person for eight days.)

So, if you can resist the enticing upcharges, Carnival's new Firenze could be a great pick for families looking for a cheap and fun vacation at sea .
