Cameron Young

Coming off an impressive 2021-2022 season, Cameron Young joined Team RBC as the 2022 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year. Cameron made his Korn Ferry Tour debut in July of 2020 as a Monday Qualifier. After a streak of four consecutive finishes of 16th or better in his first four starts, he earned enough points to play out the remainder of the 2020-2021 season as a special temporary member. His exceptional play that followed resulted in a 19th place finish on the 2020-2021 regular season points list, earning him a PGA TOUR card for 2021-2022.

In his rookie season, Cameron was a five-time runner-up (notables include the Genesis Invitational and The Open Championship) and had two top-three finishes (the RBC Heritage and PGA Championship). He made his Presidents Cup debut in 2022, representing the United States. Young has continued to play exceptionally well in 2023, finishing in second at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, and finishing in a tie for seventh at the Masters. Cameron has been on Team RBC since 2023.

F-21: Top 60 points leaders in the Official World Golf Ranking as of May 20

Young, who will compete in his fifth U.S. Open, was the 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year after tying for third in the PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., and then following it up with a runner-up showing in the 150th Open Championship on the Old Course at St. Andrews . Before gaining his PGA Tour status for the 2021-22 season, the former Wake Forest standout registered a pair of Korn Ferry Tour wins on consecutive weekends in May 2021: the AdventHealth Championship and Evans Scholars Invitational presented by First Midwest Bank. Young, the son of former Sleepy Hollow Country Club head professional David Young, registered three victories in his senior season for the Demon Deacons and had a stroke average of 70.56. In 2017 he became the first amateur to win the New York State Open. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2014 U.S. Amateur and was a member of the 2014 USA Junior Ryder Cup Team. Young was a member of the victorious 2022 U.S. Presidents Cup Team.

124th U.S. Open

Pinehurst No. 2

another close call

Cameron Young matches recent record for most runner-up finishes without win. His emotions are not exactly what you’d expect

2109881675

Douglas P. DeFelice

Cameron Young did it again. That’s the problem. Because this time it's a record he doesn't want to hold.

The 26-year-old third-year PGA Tour member recorded yet another second-place finish, this time falling two shots short of Peter Malnati Sunday at the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Fla.

RELATED:  Peter Malnati admits late ruling was a ‘great break,’ allowing him to move ball from rough to fringe

Sure, second place is better than everyone other than Malnati at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course , but Young has now done something that accomplished only once going back four decades.

After shooting 69-69-68-68 to a 10-under-par 274 total, Young now has seven such finishes. That’s matches the most second-place finishes in the last 40 years without a victory, a mark set by David Duval from 1995-97.

On Sunday, Young made birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 14 to jump into contention and remained there standing on the 18th tee. He blew his tee shot way left, the ball coming to rest on trampled down mulch where fans had been all week. He hit a pitching wedge up and over a clump of large trees, his ball landing on the green, 50 feet from the pin. His birdie attempt ended 10 feet short and he missed the par putt, settling for bogey.

That meant Malnati only needed par on the last hole to win, but he eventually made birdie to win by two shots.

Young was the PGA Tour’s 2022 Rookie of the Year. That year he finished second at the Open Championship, a shot behind Cameron Smith. He also finished second by two shots that year at the Genesis Invitational and the Wells Fargo Championship. Young's other runner-ups include the 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship, 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic and the 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

Back in the mid-1990s, Duval went on a similar run with three runner-up finishes in 1995, two more in 1996 and two more in 1997. The saving grace was a breakthrough win at the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill five months later then led to two more consecutive wins, including at the Tour Championship. So Young can take some solace.

Young also didn’t have time to dwell on the emotions of finishing second again. He had plenty of other things to worry about shortly after he signed his scorecard in the final round.

“Honestly, I realized I wasn’t going to win pretty quickly,” he said, “and I have a four-hour drive home with a 1- and a 2-year-old, so whatever emotions are attached to that.”

Cameron Young Sets Unfortunate PGA Tour Mark at the Valspar

G iven how often Cameron Young seems to be near the top of a leaderboard, it’s often easy to forget that the New York native has only played golf professionally for less than five years. He’s also only been a full-time PGA Tour member since the start of the 2021-22 season, earning Rookie of the Year honors.

But despite consistently putting himself in contention, the two-time Korn Ferry Tour winner has yet to hoist a trophy on the PGA Tour. During the final round of the 2024 edition of the Valspar Championship on March 24, Young again had a chance to claim victory but ultimately settled for second, finishing two strokes behind Peter Malnati.

Young now has an astonishing seven second-place finishes on the PGA Tour in just 60 starts, which is quite impressive. However, he also now owns the most runner-up finishes without a victory in the last 40 years.

Cameron Young Surged Into Contention at the Valspar But Again Settled For Second

Following a third-round 68 on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook, Young entered the final round of the Valspar three strokes out of the lead.

He got off to a great start on Sunday, making a birdie at the first, but gave the stroke right back with a bogey at the second. Following his second birdie of the day at the par-3 fourth, the Wake Forest alum kept himself in it with six consecutive pars before quickly climbing up the leaderboard with birdies at Nos. 11, 12, and 14.

With pars at 15 and 16, Young came to the 198-yard, par-3 17th tied for the lead with Malnati and gave himself another good look at birdie by hitting his tee shot roughly 17 feet, 6 inches from the hole. But his putt just slid by, and he tapped in for par. Malnati, playing in the group behind him, birdied the 17th to take a one-shot advantage.

On the 438-yard, par-4 closing hole, Young yanked his tee shot left, leaving himself a tough angle but hit a fine second just to get on the green. But left with just over 51 feet to the hole, he three-putted for bogey. While Malnati only needed a par at the last, he made his fifth birdie of the day to take a two-stroke victory, thus earning his first PGA Tour win since 2015.

Young, meanwhile, was left to wonder what might have been yet again, although he kept things in perspective.

“I think I kept myself in it mentally really well today,” Young said afterward. “I hit a couple shots I was really proud of late … I think I handled my own thoughts really well and, for me, that’s a big win regardless of the outcome.”

Young Needs to Hope For a David Duval-Like Breakthrough

While there are several past players to which Young could be compared, the first that comes to mind is David Duval.

Like Young, Duval posted a pair of wins on what was then called the Nike Tour before becoming a full-time PGA Tour member. And also like Young, Duval found success quickly but just couldn’t close.

In 1995, his first full season at the highest level, he earned three runner-up finishes. The following year, he earned two more. And in 1997, he recorded another three.

At long last, on October 12, 1997, Duval broke through and won the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill in a playoff. A week later, he won the Walt Disney/Oldsmobile Classic, again in a playoff. In his next start two weeks later, he won the Tour Championship. And he was off and running from there.

Over the next four years, Duval won nine more times, including the 2001 Open Championship, and spent a total of 15 weeks as the top-ranked player in the world.

Only time will tell if Cameron Young can break through in a similar fashion. But given his talent level and the fact that he’s finished in the top 10 in 15 of his 60 starts, one has to think that elusive victory isn’t far off.

Rory McIlroy's bunker eagle to take solo lead at The Open

Cameron Young didn’t win The 150th Open at the Old Course at St. Andrews on Sunday, but he still accomplished a lot.

By carding a final-round 65, including a 17-foot eagle putt at the last to reach 19 under par – solo second, one short of playing partner Cameron Smith (64) – Young took a step toward potentially winning PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year honors. The Wake Forest product may also have inched closer to making the U.S. Presidents Cup Team, which will play the International Team at Quail Hollow Club this fall.

“I think I gave myself a really nice chance (to win),” said Young, 25, who three-putted the first hole for bogey but mostly dazzled with seven birdies and an eagle. “Frustrating to come up short, but, overall, I think I had a really good week, and I think I hung in there really well today.”

Other than his rough start, his only other misstep was a drive into an unplayable lie at the ninth, leading to another bogey. Otherwise, Young showed no rookie nerves. He was vying to become the 11th player, and second straight after Collin Morikawa last year, to win in his Open debut.

Although fellow Wake Forest alumnus Will Zalatoris has gotten more publicity for his clutch play in the majors, Young may be developing that reputation, too. He tied for third at the PGA Championship in May and has been flirting with his first TOUR win all season. He finished T2 at the Wells Fargo Championship, T3 at the RBC Heritage, T2 at The Genesis Invitational, and T2 at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

He knew he needed something special for the fourth round of The Open. And he produced it.

Alas, so did Smith, who made eight birdies and no bogeys.

“It probably hurts a little worse to come up one shot short,” said Young, who is projected to move from 18th to 13th in the FedExCup standings, tops amongst the rookies with three tournaments remaining in the regular season. “If you lose by eight you don't really care. But, yeah, I played well today.”

He knew that even an eagle at the last might not be enough, what with Smith on a roll.

“I would have signed up for 65 this morning,” he said. “And to watch Cameron shoot what he did, it was pretty amazing. I think I handled it pretty well. Not as much as some of those other guys, but I've at least been around the lead a lot this year. On the PGA TOUR. In a major. So it's not the first time I've been in that situation.

“And the more I put myself there,” he continued, “I think I said at the PGA (Championship), one of these times I'll shoot 5 under on the back and that will be enough. And today I did. And it wasn't. So I guess one of these times I'll shoot 6 (under) on the back on Sunday and that will be enough.”

Lynch: Brooks Koepka isn’t a PGA Tour player, but his flex on interviews points to a big problem for his former circuit

PINEHURST, N.C. — The difference between obligations and responsibilities isn’t mere semantics about what one must do versus what one should do, and even less so for the investors about to place a heavy hand on the PGA Tour’s tiller. Free marketeers often view obligations as being for employees while responsibilities are for the executive and shareholder classes.

Brooks Koepka is none of the above as it relates to the PGA Tour, since he’s employed by LIV Golf and wasn’t part of the equity grants that made players nominal owners in PGA Tour Enterprises. But Koepka’s actions at the U.S. Open do illustrate a perplexing question that looms over his former circuit, one of many that will need to be addressed in the coming realignment.

At Pinehurst, Koepka declined to do a pre-tournament press conference or a post-round gaggle on Thursday . Players regularly skip media, though not frequently, and for a variety of reasons (though Koepka is alone — but not inaccurate — in saying it’s because the questions posed lack creativity). Sometimes they want to practice before dinner, they’re steamed about their play, they’re avoiding addressing a particular topic, they’re pouting over prior coverage, or they’re rushing to catch a Biden crime family exposé on OAN.

There’s a generational difference too. Guys who’ve grown up with a direct line to fans via social media are inclined to see traditional media engagement as less important. Veterans who relied on such coverage to boost their profiles, and those of the Tour and their sponsors, are generally more indulgent of the process.

The PGA Tour has no regulations governing how members handle media. Players are trusted to make reasonable accommodations and if an issue arises the Tour will work with all parties to sort it out. So, no obligation. But is there a responsibility? It’s an intriguing question as the Tour morphs from a de facto union into a for-profit business. Koepka’s standoffishness at Pinehurst is easily dismissed as being on-brand for a player who enjoys cultivating a slightly combative, maverick image, but it points to a broader dilemma: PGA Tour players are accustomed to thinking that all they need to do in order to get paid is play golf, and that is about to change.

U.S. OPEN:  Leaderboard  |  Hole-by-hole  |  How to watch

The investors pumping money into the Tour — not just SSG, but likely the Saudi Public Investment Fund, too — are not doing so to preserve the status quo, in any respect. They will expect players to shoulder more responsibility for the product, to be givers and not just takers. Private equity took over F1 in 2017 and the asks made of drivers grew noticeably greater. Not just media interviews, but marketing content creation, fan interactions, walk-throughs with rooms full of corporate sponsors. Golfers sometimes do things like that, but not often, and usually more in service of their own commercial interests than the Tour’s. That practice is incompatible with the impending expectations of folks who will want a more engaging, fan- and sponsor-friendly product that shows significant growth.

We’re about to find out how much players really believe themselves to be equity stakeholders with a shared interest in growing the Tour’s business, or if they still consider themselves independent contractors beholden to no one but wives and swing svengalis.

Lynch: After Brooks Koepka declined interviews, I suggested one via text. He accepted, and explained why he’s not talking

The scope of player obligations is only one of a number of difficult reckonings that promise to make the next few years considerably more compelling than the rancor of the last few. How many players will be fully exempt? How many tournaments can they access? How many events will be on the schedule? Where will they take place? What becomes of the men and events deemed surplus to new requirements? If the stars only show for $25 million purses, can $8 million prize funds still be expected in weeks overstocked with journeymen? If the post-playoff months are a testing ground for globalizing the product and for team golf, what happens to the stops currently occupying that window?

And that’s before you even get to the thorny issues around how LIV players might be reintegrated into the PGA Tour.

If the Tour’s locker room is a tinder box — and you don’t have to search far for occupants who insist that it is — then the match lies somewhere in that list.

Regardless of whether the Tour’s future lies in a ménage à deux with SSG or a ménage à trois alongside the PIF, change is coming. Among all the things it has botched, LIV got one thing right — it contracted the talent to certain obligations. The PGA Tour will need to figure out how to do the same with guys who are grooved to setting their own schedules, being their own bosses and promoting their own brands, sometimes with only accidental benefit to the Tour. That gap will need to be closed, and the process of doing so could prove every bit as rancorous as the schism that brought things to this overdue juncture.
