Welcome to Radio Travel News
National, regional or custom travel news for your radio station, sent automatically to your playout system..
Radio Travel News is perfect for automated radio stations broadcasting online, or using a number of DAB multiplexes.
Real-time travel information is viewed as a valuable service by listeners, helping them plan their journeys in advance, or informing them of potential problems on the road ahead. And even if your listeners aren’t travelling, it’s good to give them a sense of what’s happening in real time around the country – a bonus if you run an automated service.
We provide 45-second UK audio travel bulletins every hour on weekdays, plus an extra half-hourly bulletin at breakfast and drive, and send it to Dropbox before the top/bottom of the hour.
Radio stations can play it before the news, after the news, or as a stand-alone item at any time.
The bulletin is unbranded and is designed to be a sponsored feature, the income from your travel sponsor more than covering the cost. It offers a snapshot of what’s happening on the roads and public transport to keep your listeners informed.
We update half-hourly from 7am till 9am and 4.30pm till 7pm inclusive, plus hourly from 10am till 4pm. Our team is experienced in travel news and will blend in perfectly with your output.
Regional travel news is available for a growing number of areas across the UK during ‘breakfast’ and ‘drive’ shows ( see our table below ). If you run an automated service, adding a regional bulletin will keep your listeners up-to-date with the major issues around them, leaving you free to run your radio station. If you provide ‘as live’ programmes, you can also add your own ultra-local travel news as and when it happens, either replacing the regional bulletin or in addition to it.
Local / Small-scale DAB
We offer a service for stations broadcasting on a small-scale DAB who are interested in carrying a local bulletin, but shared with other stations in the same area. Read more about the Bespoke DAB Bulletin here .
We can provide travel news for your own defined area, be it a city, county or region. With a bespoke/custom bulletin, you get travel news for your TSA, along with the option to have a custom in and out message with your radio station name. Call us on 0161 262 0102 for more details.
The 45-second bulletin contains:
Radio Travel News works with all major playout systems – from RCS and Myriad to PlayoutONE and more.

We also offer custom bulletins. Please contact us for more details on 0161 262102 or email [email protected].

The bulletins are ‘white label’ and do not mention Radio Travel News. Our presenters end the bulletin with ‘that’s the latest… I’m [name]’. You can visit our client page at RadioTravelNews.com/today to find out who’s on reading duty for you to forward promote.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality
Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.
The NPR Network
A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.
Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.
This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!
When is the eclipse?
April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.
What is totality and why it matters
According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.
Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region
Check out this table for when the partial eclipse and totality are visible in each region or check by zip code here.
A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.
Unable to get to totality? We'll be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you can't see it in real time.
Where to see totality?
More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.
Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.
Why totality matters
As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."
Eclipse Science
For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.
A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.
How to watch safely
If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.
The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse
As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"
If you don't have access to eclipse glasses, you can get crafty with things you have around the house ( like some of us did back in 2017!) More on that here.
Traveling for totality?
The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:
Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!
- San Antonio: Check out the latest from Texas Public Radio
- Dallas: Explore KERA's coverage for the latest
- Austin: Head to KUT for the best local resources
Arkansas The eclipse will be cutting through the state, putting Little Rock in the path of totality. Check out Little Rock Public Radio for local resources.
The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Keep an eye on WKMS for the latest local updates.
Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . For resources from across the state, check out Illinois Public Media .
Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.
- Bloomington: Check out Indiana Public Media
- Indianapolis: Head to WFYI for the latest
- Fort Wayne: Just north of the path of totality, WBOI has resources for the Allen County area
Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.
- Cleveland: Head to Ideastream Public Media for the latest.
- Columbus: With the capital city just south of totality, head to WOSU for regional resources.
- Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.
Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.
Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions
New York Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburgh will fall under the path of totality on Monday. If you're planning to travel to the region for the best views, here are some local resources to stay safe and informed:
- Buffalo: Head to WBFO for the latest
- Syracuse: WAER has more on plans in the Salt City
- North Country: NCPR has the latest from across the region, as well as information on local viewing events to check out
Vermont The Green Mountain State will see totality across its most populous region, including Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the Northeast Kingdom on the Canadian border. Vermont Public has everything you need to know to navigate your time in the region to enjoy the eclipse safely. New Hampshire The northernmost region of the Granite State will be in the path of totality, providing prime viewing to those in Coos County. NHPR has info on local events, travel updates as well as special coverage with New Hampshire Public Television. Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.
How to document the eclipse safely
With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.
As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."
Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.
Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.
As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."
So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.

What to know about Metro Transit's new fare enforcement program
If you ride Metro Transit in the Twin Cities, expect to see agents enforcing fares on buses and light rail trains soon.
The change is in response to a new law, called the Transit Rider Investment Program, or TRIP, that makes fare evasion a civil offense.
Lesley Kandaras is the general manager for Metro Transit. She talked to All Things Considered host Tom Crann about what riders can expect.
For the full conversation, click play on the audio player above or read the transcript below. The transcript has been lightly edited for clarity.
Create a More Connected Minnesota
MPR News is your trusted resource for the news you need. With your support, MPR News brings accessible, courageous journalism and authentic conversation to everyone - free of paywalls and barriers. Your gift makes a difference.
Can you tell us what changes we will see?
The Transit Rider Investment Program has two components to it. One, it changes how we handle fare inspection on our system. And also, it creates a new type of employee, TRIP agents, who will be available to assist customers and provide a friendly, visible presence on our system.
TRIP agents will also be the ones inspecting fares, which is a change of how we've done that in the past. It had been done by our police officers.
When can riders expect to see these changes?
In the next few months, customers will start to see personnel out there inspecting fares, and if necessary, issuing the administrative citation.
These administrative citations come with fines. What kind of fines are we talking about here?
The fine structure that the Metropolitan Council approved earlier this month starts with the first violation being a $35 fine. But there are also alternatives for the first time you’re found to be in violation of the fare policy. If you violate a second and third time, the fines increase with each subsequent violation.
For people who need transportation to get to and from work but can’t afford it, along with the reality that light rail trains are used by people who need shelter – how did you balance those realities with these fines?
Metro Transit has what we call our Transit Assistance Program or TAP, which allows people from lower income households to qualify to ride transit for $1 per ride. And so one of the advantages of having the trip agents out on our system is they’ll be trained to help educate people about that opportunity to enroll in that program and get discounted transit fare.
Will TRIP agents be uniformed?
Yes. They'll have a clear uniform. They’ll be labeled as trip agents. And the idea is that they’ll be easily visible, and our customers can find them and access them as needed.
Will TRIP agents be involved in any way with either prohibited or illegal behavior that we have seen on light rail lines?
Yes. One advantage of having the TRIP agents out there is there is another set of eyes and ears on our system, and we think that them just being visibly present should help deter some problematic behaviors we're seeing.
Does the new state law provide funding for these new TRIP agents?
Yes, so part of the transportation omnibus legislation this year included a new metro area sales tax for transportation. So in the future, that will be an ongoing source of funding for many public safety activities we're doing and will also be a source of funding we can use for the TRIP program.

Thousands of Citrus College students use free L.A. Metro program
A pilot program that gives free bus and train rides to students has been particularly successful at Citrus College in Glendora.
KNX News’ Margaret Carrero spoke to Dr. Richard Rams, the vice president of student services at Citrus College, about how more than 2,000 students have benefited from Metro’s GoPass program since they joined in the summer of 2022.
“These students are able to travel to school, internships, work and leisure for free,” he said.
Lorenzo Desiderio said there can be some uncertainty in his life as a second-year student at Citrus.

“However, thanks to the GoPass program, I can be certain that I will be able to go to class on time, that I will be able to go back home and reach any place I wish to go within L.A. County,” he said.
Students from participating K-12 schools and community colleges get unlimited rides on the Metro bus, rail, and 15 other transit agencies with the GoPass program.

Traffic and Travel news remains important to radio listeners
A new report shows traffic and travel news remains relevant to radio listeners despite the growth of travel apps and websites.
The survey shows that radio travel bulletins are the most widely used and most often used source of traffic and travel information, with reliability and accessibility being the key factors.
The information was collected for GTN UK, gathering opinions from 2,000 listeners across the UK, along with additional smartphone surveys.
When asked which sources of travel information comes to mind spontaneously, 49% said radio, whilst 12% mentioned Google Maps and 6% said social media.
On finding out which services listeners have used to get information, 55% said radio, 51% said Google Maps, 15% said Apple Maps, with 9% using Waze.
70% will get their traffic and travel info from radio when they’re getting ready in the morning, 84% will get the info from radio whilst in the car, and 75% will turn up the radio when travel news comes on.
In addition, 70% think the bulletins are an important part of their radio station – 56% say they prefer to listen to a radio station that has traffic and travel bulletins, and 43% are likely to look for an alternative station if the one they’re listening to doesn’t have updates.
GTN UK is the British division of Global Traffic Network, which provides custom traffic reports and entertainment updates to commercial radio and television stations, working with over 240 radio stations.

Metro’s Silver Line almost ready to open: Here’s what it looks like, and what it’ll mean

Metro’s newest rail stations are shining, gleaming, and the fare gates are already working, as General Manager Randy Clarke found out when he flashed his SmarTrip card through them during a Wednesday visit.
All that’s missing are the riders, though that’ll change less than two weeks from now.
After descending the escalator at the Ashburn station, Clarke made sure to say “hi” to the managers already on hand. Outside the entrance to the escalators that take riders to the walkway that runs over the Dulles Greenway, workers are pouring and smoothing out concrete connecting the station to all the restaurants, apartments and parking garages adjacent to the station.
Make no mistake: The main draw is connectivity to Dulles International Airport — time it right and you can pick up your suitcase from the baggage claim and be downtown in about an hour – but all of the growth around the station is proof that the Silver Line extension is about more than avoiding an expensive cab to the airport.

“The Silver Line corridor has just exploded in growth,” said Clarke, as he stood on the platform with the Dulles International Airport terminal in the background. He’s making clear that Metro’s bread and butter has to be more than just getting people to work downtown, since a post-pandemic downtown isn’t as vibrant as it was before with so many workers now clocking in from their home offices now.
“People say, ‘How do we recover ridership?’” he went on. “It’s OK that ridership looks different.”
Someone taking the train from Loudoun to Wiehle is just as important as the traditional weekday commuter going from Wiehle to Federal Triangle in downtown D.C., Clarke said.
“Or Friday night, someone out in this corridor that wants to go to a Nats game is equally important as someone commuting in the morning,” he said.
Clarke added: “Our region is growing, it’s robust and I think all of these different travel patterns are going to merge post-pandemic and we are going to be a stronger region with this connectivity.”

That said, thousands of people are expected to take the Silver Line train to the airport, and there are new signs all over Dulles touting the arrival of the Silver Line to make it as easy as it can be for people flying into town.
The trip from the train to the terminal is just a few minutes, depending on how fast you walk and if you use the moving walkways. It takes you right under the hourly garage that separates the tracks from the terminal.
“This has been a vision for Dulles Airport for 70 years,” said Jack Potter, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
He said taking being able to take Metro to the airport means travelers won’t have to battle rush-hour traffic.
“It also is a very good option compared to what it cost you for a taxi, an Uber, or taking a car here and parking. It provides people with an option, and a very, very good option,” added Potter, standing some of the airport’s bagging carousels.
John started working at WTOP in 2016 after having grown up in Maryland listening to the station as a child. While he got his on-air start at small stations in Pennsylvania and Delaware, he's spent most of his career in the D.C. area, having been heard on several local stations before coming to WTOP.

It’s a presidential trifecta — and a traffic nightmare.
Manhattan is expected to descend into gridlock Thursday as President Biden comes together with former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton for an extravagant fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall.
Traffic barriers were already up around the famous Midtown venue by 7 a.m. — though the NYPD has not confirmed what exact road closures will be put in place, PIX11 reported .
The 81-year-old commander-in-chief — who is struggling with a dismal 40% approval rating just a few months ahead of the November election — is hoping to rake in a staggering $25 million, which would make the event the most successful political fundraiser in history.
More than 5,000 people paid between $250 and $250,000 to attend the event, a Democrat familiar with the planning said.
In addition to Obama and Clinton, Biden has recruited some star power to give oomph to his faltering campaign — including “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert, who will guide the trio’s “armchair conversation.”
Queen Latifah, Lizzo, Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo and Lea Michele are also slated to perform.
Big-ticket attendees will also have their picture taken with the three presidents by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz.
American voters will have to shell out $25 to watch the fundraiser extravaganza virtually as it will not be televised.
“Democrats are unified and energized behind President Biden’s reelection campaign — and that will be on full display this Thursday in New York City,” Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz said in a statement to the Hill .

Dramatic video shows Metro rescue efforts in deadly Alpine Motel fire
The release of Las Vegas police body camera videos paints a more complete picture of how officers and firefighters worked together on the morning of the Alpine Motel Apartments fire.
Even without protective fire gear, some Las Vegas police officers were quick to scale the side of the three-story Alpine Motel Apartments building to help residents escape what would become the city’s deadliest residential fire .
The Metropolitan Police Department’s heroic efforts on the morning of Dec. 21 were revealed for the first time Thursday, after the Las Vegas Review-Journal filed a lawsuit against the agency for body camera footage, 911 calls and radio traffic.
Metro had repeatedly denied the newspaper’s requests for records related to the fire, claiming they were confidential due to an open investigation. But just hours after the lawsuit was filed, Metro said the records had been “deemed not confidential” and turned over a combined two hours of body camera videos and audio recordings.
Las Vegas Fire Department 911 calls and radio traffic were released by city officials last month but largely highlighted only the Fire Department’s response to the blaze, which killed six people and injured 13 more.
The release of Metro’s body camera videos paints a more complete picture of how the departments worked side by side that morning — an aspect of fire rescue efforts not often seen by the public.
“We are extremely proud of our officers’ actions,” Metro spokeswoman Alejandra Zambrano said Friday. “Public safety is our No. 1 priority, and they definitely exemplified that.”
‘A pulse, no breathing’
One of those moments, when an officer jumped in to perform CPR on a victim just outside the building, was captured in a roughly three-minute video.
“He was probably about 5 feet in,” a firefighter announces as he points toward the building at 213 N. Ninth St.
“Can you start CPR for me?” another firefighter asks the officer, who is on his knees next to the motionless body. The victim’s face, hair and hands are black from soot.
Without hesitation, the officer places his hands on the victim’s chest, and he pumps and pumps — up and down, up and down, up and down.
While the officer works on the victim, a group of firefighters scramble to get the man onto a stretcher.
“A pulse, no breathing, nothing else,” a voice can be heard saying in the background.
The victim is eventually loaded into the back of an ambulance, though whether he survived remains unclear.
Another video, captured by a sergeant’s body camera, revealed that rather than wait for ladders to start helping victims out of the building, some officers climbed onto a ledge to get to people trapped in a second-story unit.
“We need more ladders on the south side. We have people on the second floor. Expedite it, please!” the sergeant, identifying himself as call sign “760,” radios in.
Metro radio traffic records show that, on the morning of the fire, call sign “760” was assigned to Sgt. Marcin Zemsta.
Dramatic rescues
Balancing one foot on the ledge and the other on a pipe, the video shows, one officer acts as a ladder to bridge the gap between a window and the ledge.
The residents crawl out the window, and climb on top of and around the officer to get to the ledge. Below, Zemsta and another officer hold out their arms to catch the residents.
“We got you, we got you,” one of the officers yells as a woman sits on the ledge, sobbing and screaming.
Moments later, another officer approaches the rescue group and asks Zemsta, “Give me a boost real quick?”
Zemsta holds out his hands, and the officer steps onto them and up to the ledge to help the other officer, who is struggling to get a man out the window.
At the same time, to the right of the frantic rescues, a thick blanket of smoke pours out of a ground floor window, the black smoke rising into the pre-dawn sky.
The blaze likely was caused by a stove being used to heat a first-floor unit, the Fire Department has said, though authorities have yet to disclose in which apartment the fire broke out.
Fire Department radio traffic previously revealed that the blaze was out within a minute of firefighters entering the building, but poor ventilation in the property enabled smoke to swell rapidly. In addition to the smoke, residents were trapped inside the building by a bolted rear exit door.
Metro’s homicide section has opened a criminal investigation into the fire. Court records show that no charges had been filed in connection with the case as of Friday, though the family of one of the victims has leveled a wrongful death lawsuit against the Alpine’s owner, Adolfo Orozco.
Orozco has owned the property since 2013 under Las Vegas Dragon LLC.

See the 2024 Solar Eclipse’s Path of Totality
A total solar eclipse is expected to pass through the United States on April 8, 2024, giving stargazers across the country the opportunity to view the celestial phenomenon in which the sun is completely covered by the moon.
The eclipse will enter the U.S. in Texas and exit in Maine. It is the last time a total solar eclipse will be visible in the contiguous United States until 2044.
Here's what to know about the path of the eclipse and where you can see it.

Where can you see the total solar eclipse?
The eclipse will cross through North America, passing over parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
The eclipse will enter the United States in Texas, and travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse.
Much of the eclipse's visibility depends on the weather. A cloudy day could prevent visitors from seeing the spectacle altogether.
When does the solar eclipse start and end?
The solar eclipse will begin in Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT. It will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.
The longest duration of totality—which is when the moon completely covers the sun — will be 4 minutes, 28 seconds, near Torreón, Mexico. Most places along the path of totality will see a totality duration between 3.5 and 4 minutes.
