Live reviews

One of the world's most prolific songwriters, Sia Furler's songs are cropping up in charts worldwide on the regular. Having worked with Britney Spears, Rihanna and Beyoncé (to name but a few) to acclaim and success, Sia also strikes out on her own. Delivering devastating pop paeans that discuss loss, depression, death, addiction, sex, drugs and, on occasion, happy things, Sia's not a bespandexed pop mannequin; she's a bona fide artist, reeling off the most incisive pop you'll ever hear.

Chances are, if you knew of Sia's solo efforts prior to this year, you'll be familiar with “Breathe Me”, a tender earthquake of a song, replete with her trademark vocal crackles, clips and croaks. However, bursting forth proper, in 2014 we've seen an abundance of top-notch belters; the overwhelming hysteria of “Chandelier”, “Eye Of The Needle” and “Big Girls Cry” is enough to make anyone combust.

Her strategy in recent months, in terms of performing live, has been unusual – reticent, even. For example, on the Ellen Show, she merely faced the back of the set as the dancer from the “Chandelier” video, Maddie Ziegler, pranced as a centrepiece. When she does allow the spotlight to be shone on her, the standout element is her voice. Her singular talent is extraordinary, oozing the kind of heartstring-yanking emotion you get when watching Titanic, reading The Fault In Our Stars... it's a combination of blazing stomach-butterflies, the silent, catastrophic crumble of our universe. Her voice escapes words, frequently. Her pitch is of course flawless; and as a spectacle before your eyes, she's majestic. Make sure to bring tissues. Sia's performances will change your life.

Absolutely amazing! I was skeptical, for some reason, after reading a couple of mediocre reviews from the Nostalgia tour, but my skepticism eased as soon as the curtains opened and I heard Sia sing live! What an amazing voice! Actually, just watching her stand on stage was enough for me! Although she's not a "performer", she definitely put on a show. Her stage presence is entrancing! I could literally watch her stand in a corner, tap her heel to the beat while grasping the mic and belting that amazing voice all day. Her dancers, of course, were phenomenal! I mean, really! The show moved fast - from song to song - almost like acts in a play, but it was quite enjoyable. She opened with Alive, which was great for getting the energy throughout the packed arena! Big Girls Cry, Bird Set Free, Cheap Thrills and Breathe Me were my performances! She sang every song I wanted to hear so I didn't leave disappointed!

There was no interaction between the artist and the crowd during the show - which I expected from the reviews I read. But after the final bows and as everyone was leaving, Sia spoke! She told everyone to stay seated while she thanked the crowd. Made us laugh and performed an encore! It was THE BEST THING EVER! So much fun! Great energy. Everyone was there for a great time. This was literally the best concert I've attended! So glad to have caught Sia on tour!

Btw: Miguel was an opening act. He was awful! He's not a performer. Reminded me a lot of a high school boy band wannabe! He tried to engage the crowd but I don't think too many people cared to see him. His band was good though!

Sia is by no means a performer known for her strict adherence to convention, but even by her own standards, she’s been acting strangely lately, in the run-up to the release of her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms of Fear. Firstly, she told The Sunday Times that she didn’t want to be famous, apparently not realising that giving interviews to British national newspapers probably isn’t an ideal part of that strategy. More sensibly, she stayed out of the limelight during a performance on primetime U.S. television recently, although she did let Lena Dunham perform an interpretive dance to her track instead - a bizarre move by anybody’s standards. Quite what will be in store for audiences when she does hit the road in support of 1000 Forms of Fear remains to be seen, especially if she’s set on keeping her face hidden - a Kanye West-style mask, perhaps? We can probably expect an array of eye-catching costumes, and if past form is anything to go by, the setlist will lean heavily on her latest record - she’s not one to do things by the book on that front, either. She did away with the piano on her last tour, and given her current direction, that’s likely to be the case this time, too; beyond that, though, it probably isn’t sensible to jump to too many conclusions about one of the world’s most unpredictable pop acts.

Firstly, I love Sia as the most amazing singer/songwriter and being able to attend her live concert was something I was greatly looking forward to.

I wasn't expecting to see her face and I was prepared for that. What I wasn't prepared for was her standing off to the side of the stage in darkness and the audience watching dancers for the entire concert whilst Sia sang to her own music track.

Throughout the concert I wasn't even certain that it actually was Sia there on stage and was she singing live at all or were we just listening to her CD playing while someone was miming.

The lighting was low and didn't focus on her and she remained in the dark for the whole concert. The tv's placed around the stadium did not sinc to what Sia was singing.

To sum it up, I still adore her and will buy her music. She just should not tour if she cannot give what some concert goers want when they pay big bucks to see an artist.

I have loved Sia's voice and her music for several years now. The venue, Phillips Arena, was phenomenal for the concert. That's why we paid $205 to see the her (and Miguel). That said, I found it disrespectful of her to stand up in a corner and sing (honestly, it looked like lip-synching sometimes). Who knows, it might have been be someone else performing on her behalf. I get it on TV presentations... and certainly was hoping that wasn't the case in the concert but sadly it was.

Miguel... not giving any credit to the band behind the screen... rude!

I will not see Sia or Miguel live again... very disappointed.

Thanks for asking.

I should have just stayed home and watch the video. It was difficult to tell if she was even singing. She sounded exactly like her recordings. Even Shazam could recognize the songs. The performers on stage were trying to sequence and dance with the simultaneously played video, shown on the screens. Many times they were out of sync Sia was trying to sing at the same sequence as the video, but many times was out of sync. The audience doesn't know whether to look at the screen or look at the stage it's like two different shows, but the screen was far more entertaining. Like I said I should have stayed home and watch the video.

Electrifying show. Sia's vocal abilities are amazing, She sings her soul out. The dancers were outstanding too, and the choreography was wild and creative. loved it. The Idea of making the video clips of her songs live on stage is nice, but very much limited. We all saw those clips over and over, and we came to see something else. I missed seeing her, Sia, her face when she sings, She was at the back of the stage for the whole show, with her face covered. Wanted her to make some connection with the crowd, and it didn't happen. With all that we had an amazing time.

First, I'd like to preface my review by saying that Sia is my absolute favourite artist! That would be the short and simple review, but that wouldn’t even begin to describe the experience that you get at one of her shows. Apart from the vocal performance of Sia being amazing, there is much more to her show. It was very unique concert! With a lot of Sia magic and mystery. Amazing dancers. Great Stephanie Mincone performance. Amazing vocal performance!! Thank you Sia!!

Mariyushka’s profile image

Truly one of the best performances I've seen. Sia's voice was on top shape and, even though she was on the back of the stage and covered, she was a powerful presence.

The performances by the dancers on every song were expertly choreographed and in perfect sync with the videos projected, so the illusion of having Paul Dano, Kristen Wiig, and Tig Notaro on stage with her was very good.

Didn't appreciate Miguel have the us say F### Trump I did go there for that purpose I went to enjoy the show but he still gave a great performance except for that.

T im Brown, 44, and his wife, Marcella, 34, may not consider themselves bona fide “Swifties”, but when it was announced last June that Taylor Swift would be visiting their corner of the globe this summer they could not resist joining the scramble for a pair of tickets.

A post-pandemic appetite for live music events has fuelled huge worldwide interest in the American singer-songwriter’s Eras tour, which surpassed in $1bn sales in November to become the highest-grossing series of concerts in history.

The pop culture event of the summer will arrive in Europe next month, kicking off in Paris on 9 May and wrapping up in London on 20 August with 49 dates in between in Sweden, Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Austria, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

The unique nature of the tour’s ticketing system, which was tweaked after a number of hitches last year, means there will be a mass movement of travelling fans who will not only be Swiftie in affiliation but swift-like in their willingness to travel across the continent.

In expectation of intense demand, Ticketmaster introduced a pre-registration system that rewarded some early applicants with access codes to the ticket sale proper, via staggered windows for each city.

Notionally designed to prioritise genuine fans over “scalpers” – people who buy and resell tickets for a quick profit – the pre-sales system also meant many fans registered for tickets in multiple destinations across Europe to increase their chances.

Tim and Marcella, who live in Norwich, registered not just for the nearest concerts – in London and Liverpool – but also in Amsterdam and Lisbon. The pair got lucky with a pair of €91 tickets in the Portuguese capital and have turned the trip into a weekend break. “I used to live in Lisbon so I thought why not kill two birds with one stone,” Tim said. “We booked ourselves flights and four nights’ accommodation the same day.” They are far from alone.

Katie Soo, the chief business officer of DICE, a rival ticketing company, said: “The excitement and uncertainty inherent in the ticket-purchasing process might have inadvertently incentivised fans to apply for tickets in multiple cities, thereby increasing the likelihood of travelling across Europe to attend the concerts.”

Hotel prices

Several European cities have already reported a sharp rise in demand for hotel and short-term rental accommodation over the summer, when the Swift hurricane will arrive. In Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cardiff, rooms at the Travelodge chain around Swift’s June dates have been sold out since August 2023, a month after tickets for the shows went on sale.

In Paris, where fans anticipate Swift to debut an updated version of the Eras show with songs from the new Tortured Poets Department album, 80% of hotels and apartments listed on Booking.com are already full up. In Warsaw on 2 August, only 9% of hotels listed on the same site are still available.

Not all of the 18 cities covered by the Eras tour are obvious tourism destinations. From 17-19 July, Swift will play three concerts at the 65,000-capacity home ground of the football club Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen in Ruhr valley, western Germany. The city’s less-than-familiar name prompted one US chatshow host to quip that “the place might not even exist”.

Yet even in Germany’s rust belt the influx of Swift fans is temporarily transforming the hotel market: any two-bedroom apartments that remain available are going for €800-2,000 a night, with cheaper accommodation available only in surrounding cities that are just as off the usual tourist track as Gelsenkirchen, such as Essen, Bochum or Herne.

Cities with stricter rules on allowing Airbnb-style holiday lets and a more limited stock of short-term rental apartments are reporting a particularly marked increase in rates during Swift’s visit, with about 30% year-on-year spikes in rental rates in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Milan, according to AirDNA, a data analytics company specialising in the short-term rentals market.

Of all the tour’s European stops, Vienna is experiencing the most notable impact on its rental market, with booking rates for the nights of Swift’s concerts recorded in February 44% higher than at the same point the previous year. By the end of March the number of nights booked in the Austrian capital for the length of Swift’s stay in the second week of August had risen by 430% compared with the same period in 2023.

When Luke Tilden’s wife, Tatjana, suggested last summer that the couple buy their 13- and 15-year-old daughters, Lena and Maya, tickets to a Taylor Swift gig for Christmas, the 53-year-old Briton initially waved it off. “There’s no chance in hell we’d get a ticket without paying through our noses, I thought,” said Tilden, who works as an interpreter at the European parliament in Brussels.

But after pre-registering for tickets in London, Paris and Munich, the Tildens got unexpectedly lucky for four tickets in southern Germany and have turned the concert visit into a mini-holiday: “We’ll visit the in-laws in Bavaria, enjoy the countryside, do a bit of hiking.”

The hope in cities across Europe is that this will be replicated on a massive scale, with fans’ excitement translating into generous spending sprees on food, shopping and leisure. In Stockholm, for example, where authorities are expecting 159,000 visitors to arrive from 135 countries in mid-May, the chamber of commerce has forecast a spending boost of €50m. “We hope the whole town will buzz from the Eras tour,” said Tomas Andersson, a spokesperson for the Swedish capital’s tourism board.

Whether fans will necessarily act like ordinary tourists, however, is up for debate. “Pop-culture tourists do not necessarily care about traditional buildings and authentic restaurants,” said Maria Lexhagen, a professor at the European Tourism Research Institute, Mid Sweden University.

“Joining up with other fan communities is stronger motivation, as is the idea that they might get closer to the stars themselves. Many of them will map out where Swift is spending her time in the city – they will seek out seemingly marginal but meaningful places like back alleys or coffee shops.” Venues may be hoping for a repeat of Sydney in February, when Swift swept into an unassuming Italian restaurant in the suburbs and sent its name into global media headlines.

A view of the exterior of Pellegrino 2000 in Sydney

In Stockholm the tourism board said it was expecting bookshops and secondhand clothes stores, rather than museums and royal palaces, to attract most of the arriving visitors. Some venues are being proactive: one restaurant within walking distance of the multipurpose Friends Arena in the Solna municipality is putting on a “Taylor Swift brunch experience” with a karaoke stage; the waterfront nightclub Debaser is hosting a pre-concert party on 16 May, an all-ages all-day party with a Swift-themed quiz on 19 May and an afterparty the day after.

Environment

As the Swift circus rolls across the continent, the transport infrastructure of urban centres will also be put to the test. Around the tour’s three-night stop in Dublin at the end of June, Irish Rail has announced additional late-night services to Cork and Limerick to meet an expected increase in demand. Extra tram and bus services are likely to be announced nearer the time.

Unlike rail operators, most airlines do not have capacity to charter additional flights. Due to yield management – airlines adjusting prices based on expected demand – a scramble for airborne journeys into cities that host the Eras tour is more likely to result in more expensive tickets rather than additional flights.

Officials at Lisbon airport said no additional flights had been chartered around Swift’s concerts on 24 and 25 May but that demand would probably be reflected in slightly higher load factors. A spokesperson for Amsterdam Schiphol said general aviation slots could be requested at short notice but nothing out of the ordinary had been logged so far.

Calculating the environmental impact of the tour with any certainty was difficult, experts said. “We can expect that some Swift fans will travel a long way to see one, if not several, shows across Europe”, said Stefan Gössling, a professor of tourism at Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden. “But measuring the environmental impact of these trips is extremely difficult – it would involve a lot of guesswork.”

Swift fans queue to buy a merchandise

This did not mean the carbon footprint was negligible. “Every flight taken by a person adds to demand and hence influences supply considerations,” Gössling said. “The greater the demand, the more aircrafts are in service.”

The pop star’s carbon footprint is easier to estimate. Swift owns two jets by the French manufacturer Dassault, whose journeys are trackable. During the 2023 leg of the Eras tour, Swift’s planes spent 166 hours crisscrossing the US in about 75 individual journeys, though it is possible they were used by people other than the singer.

According to data available through the open-access aviation tracker ADS-B exchange, Swift’s jets caused carbon emissions of about 2,830 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent over the course of the US Eras tour – about 1,700 times the annual contribution of an average person.

A spokesperson for Swift told US media last year that in advance of the tour’s start in March 2023, the pop star bought more than double the carbon credits needed to offset all tour travel. Carbon offset credits are tradable certificates that allow purchasers to compensate for emissions by investing in environmental projects that claim to reduce carbon emissions, though recent studies have questioned the efficacy of these schemes.

After deadly attack, Russia’s Central Asian workers report rising racism

Migrants say they are being collectively punished after Tajik nationals were suspected of last month’s concert hall attack near Moscow.

Assel Asanbayeva has worked in Russia since 2019, having arrived in Moscow from her native Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia.

She’s been a dishwasher, a waitress and a cleaner to support her two children, paying up to half her salary to an agency that links her to clients.

How will the moscow concert hall attack affect putin, putin says ‘radical islamists’ behind moscow concert hall attack, nine detained in tajikistan in relation to moscow concert hall attack, russia mulls labelling queen of soviet pop pugacheva a ‘foreign agent’.

On March 23, she was assigned to clean a recently renovated apartment.

It was the day after the attack at Crocus City Hall , a popular music venue on the northern outskirts of Moscow, during which at least 139 concertgoers were killed by gunmen affiliated with the Afghan branch of ISIL (ISIS).

Eleven suspects were apprehended by security forces, all of Central Asian background – mainly Tajik but also one of Kyrgyz origin, who had reportedly renounced his Kyrgyzstan citizenship in 2014.

Since then, xenophobia has mushroomed.

“It started from the very morning,” Asanbayeva told Al Jazeera by phone. “There were two of us, me and another girl. The lady of the house was yelling at us, standing behind us, pressing us psychologically. As the day went on, she kept raising her voice, threatening us.”

The client threatened the pair, saying her husband would “show all you non-Russians” before trying to attack them.

“As the day was coming to a close, my partner was telling her, ‘We’re almost finished. No need to stress.’ And then I saw her lunge at my partner with a screwdriver. At that moment, her husband walked in. He was a huge man, around 50 years old. He said, ‘I’m giving you three minutes to step off my private property.’ We were still covered in soap and wearing our work clothes, and we had to change outside.”

Officially, there are about 10.5 million migrants from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan in Russia, many in low-paid jobs, such as taxi drivers and construction workers.

The remittances they send home are significant for Tajikistan, the poorest nation in the former Soviet Union. In December, remittances made up nearly half of its gross domestic product.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Central Asians and other ethnic minorities regularly endured violent racism, often accused of being narcotics peddlers by thuggish vigilantes. Some were stabbed, beaten and killed by neo-Nazi gangs.

Neo-Nazi violence peaked in 2008 with more than 100 racially motivated murders. This trend declined by the 2010s as the authorities took a tougher line.

But discrimination persists.

Valentina Chupik, a lawyer who offers free legal help for migrants, listed the abuses her clients endure on a daily basis.

“The police robbed, extorted bribes and illegally detained people on the streets, in public transport and other public places,” she said. “They illegally broke into homes, carried out illegal ‘checks’ at work, illegally imprisoned people in torturous conditions – without food, water, toilet access or communication in unheated, unventilated, cramped premises or even in the courtyards of police stations.”

Chupik said they also falsified “non-existent administrative offences” to justify their actions against migrants “or to deprive their ability to promptly appeal crimes against them”.

Since last month’s attack, police are accused of ramping up racial profiling, conducting checks and raiding hostels hosting guest workers.

The day after the concert hall attack, dozens of Kyrgyz men were detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport and reportedly held without any food or water for 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the owners of a shopping mall in Yekaterinburg, Russia’s fourth largest city, requested all businesses on the premises provide a list of their Central Asian employees.

“The authorities cover up and encourage police crimes against migrants, slandering migrants with myths about dirty, infectious, uncultured, unskilled, uneducated criminals, inflating migrantphobia in order to distract the population from the real problems created by the authorities,” Chupik told Al Jazeera.

“The population is willingly led to any xenophobia since they are too afraid not only to speak out against the authorities but even to think about who is really to blame for their problems so as not to take any civil responsibility for their lives and their government.”

‘We Asians are used to it’

Shamil, a 42-year-old from Kyrgyzstan, said the level of discrimination does not feel new to him.

“We Asians are used to it,” he told Al Jazeera. “Nowadays, Asians are leaving to Europe and the United States for work, and Russian employers are trying to hire from other countries and continents like Africa, Vietnam, Philippines.”

Russia’s has long offered Central Asians visa-free entry, but this has come into question after the March attack.

Sergey Mironov, a Russian politician who leads A Just Russia – For Truth, a party that is sympathetic towards President Vladimir Putin, touted a visa regime on March 25, saying: “It is necessary to regulate migration and counter terrorist attacks.”

The late anti-Kremlin activist and liberal politician Alexey Navalny had also berated Central Asian migrants and called for a visa regime.

“Racism in Russia towards [Central] Asians and Caucasians [people from the Caucuses] happens every day, every godforsaken day,” added Shamil, who worked in Russia in 2005, 2013 and 2019. He is now employed as a truck driver in Western Europe.

The storm of prejudice has engulfed Russians too.

After it emerged that one of the suspects in the Crocus Hall attack, 19-year-old Muhammadsobir Fayzov, worked at a barbershop in the town of Teykovo, northeast of Moscow, its employees began receiving death threats.

A widely circulated screenshot of a text conversation with a taxi driver read: “Hello, if you are Tajik, cancel the order, I will not go with you, or I will call the traffic police. Let them check your licence to transport passengers.”

Tajik residents in Moscow have complained about being suddenly evicted.

In a town on the Chinese border, a drunken man reportedly set fire to a stall manned by migrant workers.

The Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs has even warned its citizens against travelling to Russia and urged those already in the country to carry their papers with them.

For his part, Putin has urged unity.

Days after the attack, he said: “We must never forget that we are a multinational, multireligious country. We must always treat our brothers, representatives of other faiths, with respect as we always do – Muslims, Jews, everyone.”

Russian media have lauded Islam Khalilov, a boy from a Kyrgyz immigrant family, as a hero for his response to the Crocus City Hall attack as well as his co-worker 14-year-old Artem Donskov.

Khalilov, a 15-year-old schoolboy, was working as a cloakroom attendant at Crocus when the attack began and led terrified guests through the corridors to emergency exits and safety, saving dozens of lives.

REUTERS/Maxim Shemetov

But this is all little comfort to Asanbayeva.

“[Racism’s] gotten worse, 100 percent,” she said.

“It’s a good idea to have 20,000 roubles ($215) on hand just in case you must quickly buy tickets and fly away. I’d leave right now, but it’s not so easy. I’ve got two children and my mother to support. I’d like our embassy to pay attention to these incidents and help our citizens because our embassy hardly does anything. It’s upsetting when you’re in Russia. You obey all the rules, and they still treat you like I don’t know what.”
